Welcome

MARCH - APRIL 2022 EDITION

In This Edition... Waking up to daylight

A spring tidy up is the minimum that most gardens need at this time of year. Some need something a bit more fundamental. Holly Nairn has picked a few of her garden planning favourites as suggestions when remodelling or refreshing your garden (pages 18 & 19). Her feature is topped and tailed by all the local garden services providers you could want.

A couple of editions ago I was looking at the beginnings of the reappearance of events and activities listings as a sign of a return to better times. Well, we seem to be witnessing the return from hibernation of yet more of the activities and events that keep our neighbourhood in heathy trim. Mugdock Country Park is making a sizeable contribution to this, with an extensive programme of events throughout the spring (pages 38 & 39). We have a few suggestions for other activities across the Park (pages 36 & 37) to busy the enquiring minds of kids and non-kids alike.

That’s the first time in two years I’ve managed to get this far without mentioning COVID - er, oops!

Katrina, Lisa, Simon The Park Life Team

Most of us will have heard of the Trossachs Trail, although some of us (me, sadly, but maybe this year) have yet to sample it. On pages 42 & 43 we have an overview map showing all the trail paths and key stopping points. There are 40 miles of trails to walk, cycle or paddle, so you probably won’t want to do them all in one day! A couple of new Scottish charities have come to our attention, and they are featured on pages 12, 13 & 58. Back Onside provides support for mental health issues, particularly where there is a long waiting time for public sector services. Their fundraising ball will be coming up in the summer. The BRAvery trust helps people in period poverty, primarily with the provision of menstrual products. You can find out how and what to donate in their feature.

Park Life Recipe...

Hot Cross Buns!

Traditional spiced, sticky glazed fruit buns with pastry crosses. Served as a classic Easter treat, the buns can also be enjoyed at any time of year. Each serving provides 313 kcal, 8.5g protein, 57g carbohydrates (of which 16.5g sugars), 5g fat (of which 3g saturates), 2g fibre and 0.5g salt.

Ingredients For the buns

• 625g/1lb 6oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting (see tip for alternatives) • 1 tsp salt • 2 tsp ground mixed spice (or a combination of ground spices such as cinnamom, allspice, nutmeg, cloves and ginger) • 45g/1½oz unsalted butter, cubed, plus extra for greasing • 85g/3oz caster sugar • 1 unwaxed lemon, finely grated zest only (alternatively use finely grated zest of ½ orange or 1 tang rine/satsuma) • 1½ tsp dried fast-action yeast • 1 free-range egg • 275ml/9½fl oz tepid milk (non dairy milks are also suitable) • 125g/4½oz dried mixed fruit of your choice

8

|

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

For the topping • 2 tbsp plain flour (see tip for alternatives) • 1 tbsp golden syrup or runny honey, gently heated, for glazing (see tip for alternatives)

Method

1. For the buns, sieve the flour, salt and mixed spice into a large mixing bowl, then rub in the butter using your fingertips. Make a well in the centre of the mixture, then add the sugar, lemon zest and yeast. Beat the egg and add to the flour with the tepid milk. Mix together to a form a soft, pliable dough. 2. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Carefully work the mixed dried fruit into the dough until well combined. Knead lightly for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. 3. Grease a large, warm mixing bowl with butter. Shape the dough into a ball and place into the prepared bowl, then

cover with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour to prove. 4. Turn out the proved dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back the dough. Shape into a ball again and return to the bowl, then cover again with the tea towel and set aside for a further 30 minutes to rise. 5. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape using the palms of your hands. Cover the buns again with the teatowel and set aside to rest for 5–10 minutes. 6. Grease a baking tray with butter and transfer the buns to the tray. Wrap the tray very loosely in baking paper, then place inside a large polythene bag (or cover loosely in lightly oiled cling film). Tie the end of the bag tightly so that no air can get in (if using) and set aside in a warm place for a further 40 minutes to rise. Preheat the oven to 240C/220C Fan/Gas 8. 7. Meanwhile, for the topping, mix the plain flour to a fairly thick smooth paste with 2 tablespoons cold water (you may need to use slightly less or more water to get the right consistency). When the buns have risen, remove the polythene bag and the greaseproof paper. Spoon the flour mixture into a piping bag (or a plastic food bag with a corner snipped away) and pipe a cross on each bun. 8. Transfer the buns to the oven and bake for 8–12 minutes, or until pale golden brown. As soon as you remove the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.

Innovative 20 Minute Neighbourhood Study for East Loch Lomond

F

orth Environment Link works alongside communities in the Forth Valley and across Scotland to facilitate better climate actions for people and the planet.

Locally”. We wondered what this model - used in places like Melbourne and Paris, might look like in a rural Scottish setting.

Supported through Green Recovery Fund from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, they have piloted an innovative study in East Loch Lomond. Project Coordinator Stuart Guzinski told us how it came about.

We started by mapping East Loch Lomond to take a snapshot of its facilities. We then engaged locally, face to face and via online surveys, to capture thoughts on how well they believe their needs are met locally, and crucially, what positive changes they would make to live well locally. We wanted to hear about things that improve quality of life, whether less traffic noise or more local employment opportunities.

While building local food systems in rural places using the NeighbourFood platform, we came across the “20 Minute Neighbourhood” concept. This is a place, where the majority of people’s daily needs can be met in a short walk. Another name for it is “Living Well

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Because 20 Minute Neighbourhoods localise services to reduce a place’s carbon footprint, we asked what aspects of lockdown people would keep, such as flexible home working, more family time or connection with nature. Lockdown opened new possibilities. Some employers found staff even more productive when they didn’t commute, while workers enjoyed a better work-life balance and knew they were reducing their carbon footprint, for instance.

The results of this consultation will help identify local priorities that can feed into future place plans, putting people and sustainability at their hearts. The next Drymen Place Plan will be the first to benefit from this data. On the page you can see some photographs of the engagement for the study which took place in Drymen Primary School, during walking and cycling activities and on the Village Square and in the Village Hall.

Period poverty is a worldwide issue...

1

in 4 people who menstruate experience period poverty. This means that over 500 million people globally have a lack of access to menstrual products, education, or adequate hygiene facilities. The BRAvery Trust is a Scottish based non-profit organisation that operates to raise awareness of and help those living in period poverty, and experiencing bra inequalities. We support people in our global partner communities by providing menstrual products and hygiene advice, pre-loved bras, and packaged underwear. We communicate, think, and act together in order to achieve a lasting positive change in equipping people worldwide with these essentials. If you would like to join us in spreading awareness of period poverty and helping those who face this struggle, please feel free to reach out.

Q & A: Lucy Thomson, Director of the BRAvery Trust Why is the work The BRAvery Trust is doing so important? Period poverty is a worldwide issue. In some countries, menstruators miss an average of 12 weeks work and education every year due to the inability to carry out daily tasks due to a lack of menstrual provisions. The aim of The BRAvery Trust is to provide support and a voice for people struggling to manage their periods. We work to reduce the stigma around periods and normalise conversations on both periods and period poverty. Through equipping people who menstruate with the basic provisions of menstrual products and basic underwear, we hope to help improve these individuals' lives and ultimately reduce the number of those living in period poverty. We also provide basic underwear with the aim of tackling bra inequalities, providing support to those who wish to wear them.

12 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

How can people help the BRAvery Trust in their mission? Following us on our social media pages, as we use this to share both educational information and updates on our work. We would also greatly appreciate donations of menstrual products, pre-loved bras, and new packaged pants sent to our PO Box. We’ll also be fundraising and organising events in the near future that you can support us and get involved in, with details being posted on our social media channels. We also have volunteer opportunities available, so if interested, please feel free to reach out via our email or social media. We would also love to hear from you with your thoughts and ideas, we are in our infancy and can only improve.

Is there a particular moment that stands out for you in running the BRAvery Trust? It’s hard to pinpoint a particular moment that stands out as we are continuously learning, growing and working hard to reach more people, but the first package that we sent to our first partner community stands out. This marked the beginning of our journey to creating real impact in the lives of those who face period poverty and bra inequality. In our first year alone we have received over 4,327 donations of bras and individual menstrual products and we have grown to a committee of 23 dedicated volunteers. While we are still in our infancy, we are building a community of people who are focussed on reducing the stigma around period poverty and raising awareness of this issue, with the ultimate aim of increasing the number of donations we receive to reach more people in need of basic menstrual products and underwear.

What’s next for the BRAvery Trust? At the moment, we are working to continue growing our community outreach, as we work with more local communities, as well as maintaining connections globally. A recent donation of over 300 bras was made to Kindness Homeless Street Team in February, and we aim to continue to find more local communities and organisations that we can support. We want to work in a more sustainable manner moving forward, as we focus our research towards reusable menstrual products, packaging and reducing our carbon footprint. Our research continues to expand, and our fundraising methods are continuously developing. We are also about to launch a Duke of Edinburgh Volunteer program to continue educating young people on period poverty and to allow those completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award to get involved in our work.

TO DONATE If you would like to donate any used bras, packaged underwear or menstrual products please send to:

Falling for Foliage by Holly Nairn

Over 25 years gardening experience • Independent consultant and designer since 2015

W

hen I’m designing a garden, flower colour often comes quite far down the list. Many superb gardens feature little colour and rely heavily on foliage, employing a variety of leaf shapes, textures and sizes. Contrasting leaves excite the eye and bring a sense of drama. Large plants, massive leaves and height can give a small garden the illusion of a jungle waiting to be explored. Rodgersias in a boggy, shady patch are dramatic and jungly – planted with a ligularia throwing up yellow spikes underskirted with waterlily-like leaves, this combination could provide a great solution for a swampy problem area.

Rodgersias Aesculifolia

Carex Evergold 18 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Chaerophyllum hirsutum 'Roseum', or hairy chervil, bears masses of lilac-pink flowers in late spring or early summer. I grow it with aquilegia - granny’s bonnets and other tall perennials. For best results grow 'Roseum' in moist but well-drained soil in sun or shade - a big clump of it is dreamy.

Ground cover foliage is always something I use in planting schemes and I could never be without ajuga. Vivid blue bugle flowers are loved by bees and the foliage can be soft and green, cream and purple in Burgundy Glow or a shiny ebony purple in Black Scallop. These plants contrast fantastically with short grasses and sedges such as Carex Everest or Evergold – these brilliant silver and gold evergreen beacons planted en masse beneath a specimen shrub can create a simple but effective year-round carpet with next to no maintenance, even in heavy clay.

Chaerophyllum Hirsutum Roseum Anthriscus sylvestris Ravenswing, black-leaved cow parsly is a hero that gently self-seeds around the garden. This is not a problem as I can’t think of one plant that it wouldn’t compliment and explains why is it always seen at Chelsea.

Ajuga Black Scallop Some of my favourite plants are those which combine beautiful leaves with delicate flowers. I love the romantic softness of fern-like leaves and the exquisite complexity of umbellifer flowers that leave a stunning seedhead for winter. Insects flock to these flowers and they are great for playing the bridesmaid to showstoppers like roses or iris, in the border or in a vase.

Emerging stems of anthriscus sylvestris Ravenswing, black leaves cow parsley It’s also worth considering edibles in your borders. I have often sprinkled parsley, chervil and coriander around the garden for their ferny leaves. Weeding just becomes that bit tastier!

Waterfall & Loch Lomond View Walk

O

ur walk starts at Inversnaid, parking at Inversnaid Hotel. Take the A829 from Aberfoyle for a scenic drive that passes Lochs Ard, Chon and Arklet before arriving at Loch Lomond. Alternatively, take a 30-minute Cruise Loch Lomond boat trip from Tarbet (timetables and tickets at cruiselochlomond.co.uk)

Depending on the time of year and time of day, you are likely to see many walkers as this is the path of the West Highland Way; it is also the start or end of the Great Trossachs Path to Callander. Close to the car park is the magnificent Arklet Falls, which flows into Loch Lomond. There are paths, steps and bridges to help you get up close to the falls. Once you’ve seen the waterfall turn around and walk through the car park, heading north on the route of the West Highland Way, this is RSPB Inversnaid Nature Reserve, and soon after you start walking on the loch shore path, you will see an RSPB board where you can see the most recent sightings.

26 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Keep following the path, passing a boat shed, looking out for the wooden sign to take a path away from the West Highland Way route. Brace yourself for a steep climb, but you are heading for an elevated viewpoint, so that’s your motivation. Take your time to enjoy the stunning nature and look for birds on the reserve. At the top, there is a clearing that provides one of the best views of Loch Lomond. You can see Tarbet and the Arrochar Alps opposite, with Loch Sloy power station further north at Inveruglas. There is a bench perfectly positioned for enjoying the excellent views. Follow the path along, as it will soon take you back down towards the loch shore, then turn left to return to Inversnaid Hotel.

The RSPB trail is a beautiful walk at any time of the year; we’ve included pictures taken during spring, summer and winter months. It’s just under 4km, allow around 2 hours. Discover more ideas for exploring Loch Lomond & The Trossachs at seelochlomond.co.uk

Local Businesses Supporting Net-Zero

L

ocal businesses are playing their part in Scotland’s ambition to become net-zero by 2045. Here are just a few examples.

Fraser C Robb has also made their building much more fuel-efficient, with biomass and solar panels. In addition, they have helped switch commercial and domestic customers from garden/ground care equipment that use fuel to greener battery versions. Drymen Business Hub organises meetings between local businesses and Business Gateway experts to reduce car journeys to Stirling.

The Oak Tree Inn has installed 156 solar panels which produce power for their kitchen, bar, restaurant, and refrigeration units. They also have introduced a market garden to supply the vegetables and herbs used in the food they serve. Meanwhile, St Mocha use an electric vehicle to gather coffee grounds from their coffee shops. These are dried in the Oak Tree’s biomass shed and used as fuel and in their palm-free natural soap.

Duff Christmas Tree Farm has numerous initiatives to reduce carbon, including planting two trees for each one felled. They have created new woodlands as well as protecting ancient woodlands. The team works by hand as much as possible to reduce the use of machinery and use recyclable labels on their trees.

Finally, at Loch Katrine, the SOS – Save our Steamship appeal will hopefully be successful with Sir Walter Scott Steamship returning to service in the summer. There are plans to use a new ground-breaking green fuel-HVO-which is, a hydrogen and vegetable oil-based fuel, instead of the current diesel mix. It is estimated that this will allow a staggering decrease of emissions of over 90%. In addition, the Steamship promotes Active Travel connecting communities by water rather than road. You can play your part in reducing journeys and supporting businesses in the Park Life area by ‘Buying Local’. If you or your business have introduced new green initiatives, we’d like to hear about them for future features so please send us details.

Kippen Heritage Kippen Kirkyard The lovely old Belfry and Church ruins lie behind the walls of Kippen’s Old Parish Church, built in 1691 and enlarged in 1777. The Church bell, which still hangs there, is inscribed 1618. Taking a wander round the old headstones and monuments, you will see that the names in the Kirkyard document the trades and occupations that existed in the village, and surnames such as Dougall the clockmakers, Rennie the blacksmiths, Welsh the joiners, the ministers, schoolmasters, masons, weavers, farmers and more, whose names remain with us. Many emigrated and scattered their names worldwide; there is the grave of William Bell whose son Robert went on to found the community of Kippen in Ontario, the Mills who went to Utah. Their stories are now coming back to us through their descendants. Sadly the Kirkyard gate at Kippen Cross is now locked to all, due to the poor state of repair of the Belfry and ruined Church, as well as a number of headstones being deemed unsafe. Until this repair work is carried out, the community and those seeking their ancestors are denied access.

We are busy fundraising to allow everyone with an interest in history and genealogy access to their heritage. To help us do that, we have opened a fundraising website called gofundme.com/f/help-us-to-save-kippen-old-kirk

Archeological Dig In 2019, we had a successful Dig at Keir Hill of Dasher in Kippen, ledby Murray Cook, County Archaeologist. This is the site of an ancient Fort, almost certainly in use during Viking Age Scotland (9th – 11thC.). There are also signs of activity from the early Bronze Age. We hope to follow this up with a second Dig on 27th - 30th May at this site. Further work will be undertaken over the summer to try and determine the site of a very early church near the site.

Scottish Mental Health Charity Supporting thousands of people throughout Scotland and beyond

B

ack Onside are a Scottish Mental Health Charity based in Stirling. They provide support, awareness and education around Mental Health, no matter your age or circumstance. The charity was founded in 2018 by Libby Emmerson; a local fundraiser from Drymen, who was determined to improve access to mental health services, after her own battle with depression and anxiety in previous years. “I found that waiting lists were long and private mental healthcare just wasn’t affordable. I wanted to create an organisation that could give support much quicker, immediately if needed, and at no cost to the service user. I put my fundraising skills to play and before I knew it, Back Onside was created.” “I’m so proud of how much Back Onside has grown in just a few years. We’ve went from helping a couple of people, to literally supporting thousands of people throughout Scotland and beyond.” “There’s a huge demand for mental health services now, particularly since the appearance of Covid-19. Our team aims to not only support those that need mental health care, but also educate and get people talking about their anxieties and concerns. We want everyone to understand Mental Health; to know what to say, how to help and how to identify signs if a loved one is struggling. These skills are priceless in today’s society, and can literally, save lives”

What do Back Onside do? 24/7 Crisis Line Support Feeling vulnerable, anxious or struggling with daily life? We’re here 24 hours, 7 days a week providing emergency and tailored support for those struggling with their mental health.

As the seasons change, so does the wildlife and although we are seeing our wintering population of geese return north, we are excited for the return of iconic species like Osprey to Loch Lomond. We hope 2022 will allow us to roll out our full events and activities schedule including a spring eggstravaganza trail, Big Wild Summer, Guided walks, and specialist workshops. We can’t wait to open-up new areas of the reserve and allow visitors to enjoy our diverse habitats and spectacular wildlife we have on offer.
