Welcome

JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2022 EDITION

In This Edition... Happy New Year; Best foot forward!

I’d encourage you to leaf through the magazine first before you take to the internet when you’re looking for goods and services. You might find the local business you are supporting is run by your neighbour!

We’re still in the dark of winter, but we’re looking forward to a bright year. So this edition majors on some of the things you can do to put that spring back in your step, even before Spring gets here!

Let’s get the year going with enthusiasm. After all, how we feel in the future starts today. All the best for the year to come.

Katrina, Lisa, Simon The Park Life Team

Our lovely Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park bristles with outdoor activities, and they’re not just for extreme sports enthusiasts. Take the Drymen Heritage Trail, for example. No high exertion needed here, just a comfortable walk around Drymen accompanied by a podcast or two to keep you on track (pages 40/41). Then there are some easy walks we have selected for you to give you back that enthusiasm for our wonderful countryside, before you pop in to a local café for a warming bowl of soup or an invigorating coffee (pages 26/34/62). If you’d prefer something slightly more challenging, take to the water for a paddle. You can go selfpropelled in a kayak (pages 36/37), or take the strain out of the paddling by allowing the newly restored Maid of the Loch to do that for you. Mind you, the Maid’s paddles are not quite ready for work yet (pages10/11).

Katrina - Director Lisa - Sales Director

isa L a n & i r t a K

As usual, our pages are full of local businesses who want to continue to provide the best of service to you.

Meet the Park Life Team! Katrina Gardner (Director)

After a career in hotels involving all aspect of business from sales to marketing I thought running my own business would be easy! Lots of highs and a few lows on the way but overall, a love of this part of the world and a desire to get involved locally it has been a joy. With over £50,000 raised under the Park Life name for local charities and numerous networking events and dinners. Getting to know local businesses and connecting them it has been a lot of fun and with this excellent team it’s most certainly onwards and upwards for Park Life Magazine!

Lisa Sanderson (Sales Director)

Lisa started with Park Life over 10 years ago after having had a break from work to raise her two children (raising kids has to be harder than any job I can think of!) With a degree in Business Management which led to a career as Hotel Manager for Whitbread we have no idea why she loves working with us so much! Lisa’s love of the Park Life area shines through when she visits our customers and tries to help them promote their businesses using the skills and knowledge she has in sales and marketing. It’s all helped with her happy bubbly personality. She can be spotted out and about delivering Park Life at the drop off points monthly, when in search for a coffee and a chat!

Simon Jones (Creative Director)

Simon has been a very welcome addition to the team and has over 34 years in the Graphic Design and Advertising industry and now has his own company, Skep Design. We have thrown a lot of curve balls his way and he is never fazed... well not yet! Simon has worked with the team for the last 8 years producing all the design and creative work for Park Life Magazine and numerous local businesses.

Paul Saunders (Social Media & Marketing) Paul is a marketing consultant in Drymen and works with a number of local businesses. He looks after the running of our Facebook account; he also writes articles and provides photography for the magazine. His Creative input has greatly enhanced our social media presence with videos, photos etc highlighting up and coming events and reviewing successful local gatherings along with local news updates. As you probably all know he is also renowned for his amazing photography skills.

Rising out of the water The Maid of the Loch.

L

ast year The Maid of the Loch left the water of Loch Lomond for only the second time in over 40 years. However, she didn't go far, as she was winched out onto the slipway, close to her berth by Loch Lomond Shores in Balloch. The Maid will remain on the slipway for most of this year to refurbish her paddles, paint the ship’s hull and funnel, and re-plate the hull under the boiler room. The state of the hull was not too bad, considering her age of nearly 70 years ago. Deterioration wasn't as bad as it could have been, thanks to Loch Lomond being a freshwater loch. The charity took the opportunity of the ship being out of the water to offer the public guided hard-hat tours last year. These were so popular that they are resuming in the spring. We got the opportunity to join one of the tours and thoroughly enjoyed looking over the last paddle-steamer built in the UK and seeing the restoration achieved so far by the hard-working volunteers. (these are some of our photographs of the tour) The Maid of the Loch was launched in 1953 and sailed until 1981, when she lay abandoned for over a decade. During this time, she was vandalised, with many of her assets stolen.

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Thankfully the Loch Lomond Steamship charity rescued her from being scrapped in 1995 and began a tireless campaign to restore the historic vessel. It's not just about preservation, with the charity volunteers dedicated to fully restoring the steamer, getting her back sailing again on Loch Lomond and once again carrying passengers. The Maid remains an iconic symbol of Loch Lomond, and as well as remembering the golden days of steam, the reintroduction of the ship will bring back old routes improving connection by water on Loch Lomond. When back sailing, the Maid will help alleviate the pressure of cars and parking at many of the lochside communities. If you would like to join the Maid of the Loch team and volunteer your time to help restore the iconic paddlesteamer, you can contact them via their website www.maidoftheloch.org. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Park Life Gardening Tips It might be cold outside, but there are still plenty of jobs to do in the garden this month. Here are the main ones...

1 Put your new-year enthusiasm to good use by cleaning pots, tools, water butts and greenhouses in preparation for spring. It’s not the most glamorous of tasks, but it will set you up for a great growing season. 2

Start planning what you want to do with your garden in the months to come. Now is the time to order seeds and plants from the comfort of your armchair (see below).

3 Check your winter protection is still working for you - survey any stakes, supports and ties that might have been damaged in bad weather.

Pruning & Tidying • Prune your wisteria - cut back summer side shoots to 2 or 3 buds. •

Prune rose bushes –January is the perfect time to do this as roses are still dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches.

• January is the earliest that you can prune rhododendron.

Continue looking after wildlife - put out food for hungry birds and continue to leave some areas of your garden uncut for shelter until the spring January is a great time to plan your garden for the year ahead. Make the most of this quieter time to do the following garden admin from the comfort of your armchair:

• If your honeysuckle is very overgrown, now is the best time to prune & cut back hard to encourage healthy, new growth.

• Plan your vegetable plot. Consider good crop rotation to prevent pests and diseases building up in the soil.

• Tidy up perennials. Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like sedum - be careful of any new growth.

• Order seeds. Draw up a garden plan to help decide the quantities of each seed you need.

• Remove old hellebore leaves - this will make new blooms more visible as they emerge this spring.

• Order spring-planting crowns and tubers. Think about dedicating a bed to perennial vegetables such as asparagus, rhubarb and artichokes.

• Cut back willows. Trim the damaged, diseased and the oldest stems ofbrightly coloured willows, and thin out overcrowded stems.

• Order fruit trees now for spring planting.

• Deadhead winter pansies. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

4

• Order clematis. • Order fuchsias, geraniums and lobelia, in preparation for the busy spring period.

14 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

• Cut back ornamental grasses. Clip the old foliage from ornamental grasses before new growth begins - cut back to within a few centimetres of the ground.

a winter wonderland: 100% for nature W ith funding from the EU LIFE 100% for Nature programme, RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond has been transforming areas of the reserve into a winter wonderland for Greenland White Fronted Geese.

RSPB Loch Lomond and the surrounding farmland plays host to 1-2% (200-250 birds each year) of the UK wintering population of this species, with the remainder found mainly on Islay. They migrate from Greenland to spend the winter here; roosting by the loch after dusk and taking-off before dawn to feed in nearby fields. The geese are protected by the site’s several designations including being a Special Protection Area (SPA), Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and RAMSAR

24 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

(Internationally important wetland for waterfowl). The land management at RSPB Loch Lomond concentrates on protecting and improving roost sites for the geese, as well as working with our neighbours to reduce disturbance in their feeding areas. Money from the funding enabled the reserve to purchase a new low-groundpressure tractor along with cutting attachments and specialised Soucy tracks. These tracks reduce the amount of pressure the tractor puts on the ground, allowing it to work in the wettest and muddiest areas of the site, without causing extensive damage to the soil.

and staff time to work on the project. This meant Luke Wake, the Assistant Warden, was able to begin the extensive cutting regime at Wards Ponds and Ring Point back in September 2021, before the October rainfall. Prior to the cutting, these areas were a mix of rushes, sedges, tufted hair grass and brambles. Cutting back this dense, overgrown vegetation has allowed these areas to flood, creating new foraging and roosing habitat that is already benefitting a wide range of species including feeding ducks e.g., wigeon, teal and mallard and roosting geese e.g., Greenland White-Fronted geese and the more numerous Pink-Footed geese. This project has been made possible with funding from the EU LIFE 100% for Nature programme and co-funders NatureScot. RSPB Loch Lomond is open 7 days a week. During the winter our car park closes at 5pm.

Money from the funding supported staff training on the new equipment

Park Life Recipe...with love! Heart Shaped Brownies - Valentines Day Desserts Ingredients

Directions

3/4 c. unsalted butter 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate 4 oz. semisweet chocolate 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder 3/4 tsp. salt 6 large eggs 1 c. granulated sugar 1 c. packed brown sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract Vanilla frosting, for decorating

Heat oven to 350°F. Line 13inch by 9-inch pan with foil; grease foil. In 3-quart saucepan, melt butter and chocolates on low, stirring. Remove from heat. In bowl, whisk flour, cocoa and salt. In large bowl, with electric mixer on high speed, beat eggs until blended. Gradually add sugars; beat until tripled in volume, about 10 minutes.

Fold in chocolate mixture and vanilla, then flour mixture. Pour into pan. Bake until toothpick inserted near center comes out almost clean, 28 to 32 minutes. Once cool, cut brownies into hearts freehand or using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. (Tip: Don't let the trimmings go to waste — you can even crumble them onto a sundae!) Pipe on store-bought frosting to create cute chocolate "conversation hearts."

If you can’t go out for Valentine's Night... have fun at home! 1. cook a romantic dinner

Most of us have a favourite dish from our favourite restaurant - the one we crave time and time again. Have you ever tried to recreate that dish at home? With a little internet research, you can often replicate fancy restaurant meals at home.

2. create a spa experience at home Not everyone has the time or money to spend a day at a fancy spa. But you can pamper yourself and your partner by creating your own spa at home. Light some aromatherapy candles, draw a bubble bath or take turns giving each other a back massage.

3. turn your living room into a ballroom When’s the last time you and your sweetheart went dancing? Move aside the living room furniture to create some space, cue up some music and dance the night away.

4. cuddle up and watch a movie There’s no better excuse than Valentine’s Day to snuggle under a blanket and watch a romantic movie. There are numerous romantic films for Valentine’s Day — Or, for something more personal, you could snuggle and watch home movies or look through old photo albums.

5. channel your inner pastry chef Nothing is sweeter than preparing a fancy dessert with your partner. Elevate your baking skills with heart-shaped dessert recipes (see page 26). Or create a simple, romantic dessert such as chocolate-dipped strawberries paired with champagne. Just dip fresh strawberries into melted chocolate (semisweet chocolate chips melted in the microwave work great) and place them in the refrigerator to harden for an hour before serving.

6. play games Being playful and having fun isn’t just for children. Research shows that adults benefit from games too. They’re a source of relaxation, and they build your problem-solving skills, which can help strengthen your relationship. On Valentine’s Day, dust off your favourite board games, grab a deck of cards or play a round of Truth or Dare with your partner.

7. take a trip around the world — without leaving home Perhaps you’ve been dreaming about a romantic wine tour in Italy or a relaxing trip to a far-away beach. Bring those adventures right to your doorstep by organising a themed date night at home.

8. Create a scavenger hunt around the house Write a series of clues to guide your partner on a fun scavenger hunt around the house, leading to a surprise at the end such as a romantic meal or gift. Each clue, whether it’s a riddle or photo, should lead to the next. Of course, these ideas also work for date nights at home, not just on Valentine’s Day. So keep them year-round to celebrate the person you love the most in the place you love the most. 32 | handy www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Tips to selling your home

Declutter but don’t

Depersonalize 1 Get rid of all the excess stuff that has accumulated in every nook and cranny. Put it in storage or give it to a friend 2 People need to be able to envisage what the property would look like if they were living there. People often find this difficult, so make it easy for them to see all the fantastic living space you’re offering them 3 Don’t make it look like a generic hotel; leave some personality. Apart from anything else it gives unimaginative buyers suggestions as to what they might do. People are often buying into a lifestyle as much as a property. Show them the attractive side of your lifestyle 4 Consider removing any bulky furniture that makes the room feel small and replacing it with smaller furniture

Walks this way... Bracklinn Falls/ Keltie Water/Crags

Callander

A circular walk taking in the idyllic Bracklinn Falls, a very popular local beauty spot. Once over the bridge the route climbs through forestry before descending to the quiet upper glen, with a return by minor road. Good path and track with some steps - walk to the Falls is suitable for some baby buggies. Care should be taken at the Falls where there are steep drops and slippery stones. Drive to Callander on the A81 or the B822 via Fintry, turn right into the high street and take a left turn into a minor road, following signs for the Bracklinn Falls and Golf Course. Continue past the Golf Course Visitors’ Car Park and head up a very narrow road until you see a parking area and signpost for the Bracklinn Falls (NN639084). Go down the steps from the car park and follow the well-defined path through meadows filled with wild flowers, and natural woodland of alders and rowan trees.

L

och Lomond & The Trossachs National Park has 22 lochs and a host of rivers to paddle on. Whether it’s by kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP), there are some fantastic places to get on the water. Here are a few ideas from See Loch Lomond of some of the best locations to paddle in the National Park.

Loch Eck

loch lomond Milarrochy Bay, just up from Balmaha, is a great place to launch. In Balloch at Loch Lomond Shores, you can hire kayaks or go on guided tours. The layby, opposite the pretty cottages in Aldochlay, just south of Luss, is an ideal place to park and launch your SUP, kayak or canoe, with several islands very close to the banks of the loch. Good luck getting a parking space as these are very limited at the lay-by.

the trossachs Go Country by Loch Ard has Kayaks and Canoes for hire. It’s a beautiful loch to paddle on, with Eilean Gorm island accessible. Further along, is Loch Chon, there is limited parking in the first car park (the one before the campsite) this allows easy access to the water on a loch that is just the right size to explore.

Loch Lomond Shores

Check out updated guides to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs on the See Loch Lomond website www.seelochlomond.co.uk

Loch Eck has several car parks, with Jubilee Point the largest, where you can set up your board and boat and get easy access to the water.

breadalbane Use Loch Lubnaig’s South Car Park to launch your canoe or kayak. Take care as the water gets deep quick. Loch Voil is a long, narrow, and quiet loch by Balquhidder. Roll Outdoors, based at nearby Kingshouse rent kayaks, canoes and SUP’s; they offer tuition for groups. Lesser known Loch Dochart, by Crianlarich has a ruined castle that you can paddle to (if the water level is high enough) this is accessed from a lay-by by the A85.

Drymen Heritage Trail D

rymen Community Development Trust (DCDT) has launched a new heritage trail for the village. The route starts at the historic village square, discovering some of the previous uses of the buildings around the village centre. Next, the route goes to the church and then across a footpath by the viewpoint to Buchanan Estate.

Accompanying the trail is a series of short audio podcasts recorded by current village residents. The dramatised stories that they tell bring to life many of the places and buildings featured, from different moments in time during the last few centuries. The Heritage Trail is part of the 'Discover Drymen' project, supported by funding from NatureScot, DCDT, Drymen Community Council, Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, RSPB Scotland, Stirling Council, National Lottery and Magic Wee Grants. This project has also introduced a new village website (drymen.org) and funded repairs to the square area, which is owned by the community. The audio stories have all been recorded and produced in the village by one of the Trust directors Katy Gibb who says that all the people involved have been great storytellers: 'They were all enthusiastic about the project, and we all learned something new about Drymen. We are very grateful to Drymen Heritage for their help researching the history and information'.

Fire, Flood, Storm or an Escape of Water to your home can be a traumatic experience. Fortunately most people are insured and a loss adjuster and surveyor, appointed by the insurer, are quickly put in place (subject to acceptance of liability). The loss adjuster’s role is initially to determine whether the claim is valid or not. The surveyor’s role is to prepare build reinstatement costs by issuing tenders, managing the work and reinstating your home. Loss adjusters and surveyors have to be seen to be open, fair minded and professional at all times. They are nevertheless usually appointed by the insurer. However, do you know that you can appoint your own surveyor, paid for by your insurer to look after your interests? Whilst still acting professionally and impartially, you would have confidence that your own surveyor will always be on your side, ensuring that your expectations are never lowered. Your appointed surveyor will deal with the loss adjuster and the insurer on your behalf, keeping you informed every step of the way. This service is provided within your policy conditions at no cost to you. Anderson Building Consultancy has provided this service for many years working closely with clients, not only locally, but throughout the UK. Appointed by the policyholder, we provide a personable professional service at all times. Even if your insurer rejects your claim initially, we may still be able to help overturn their original decision. If you have a claim, or are dissatisfied with the service currently provided by your insurer, please feel free to contact us, even for just a chat. For most people Fire, Flood, Storm or Escape of Water claims are a once in a lifetime experience which can be extremely stressful, dealing with complicated procedures even before reinstatement commences.

We are here to help , guide and support you.

it's a dogs life!

M

y dogs are family and any canines that I work with, are treated with compassion, understanding, kindness and care. I understand what it is like to have a rescue dog who has fear based anxiety, noise and dog reactivity, as I had the privilege to share part of my life with one, whilst giving her the best life possible. I have been lucky enough to raise puppies and support their individual development into wonderful adult dogs. Riding the ups and downs of sharing your home, life and sanity with a puppy!

Buchanan Castle Golf Club unrivalled facilities, stunning surroundings

B

uchanan Castle is a golf club with unrivalled facilities, set in the most stunning surroundings just outside of Drymen in the Buchanan Castle Estate. As well as an 18-hole James Braid designed parkland course, Facilities for members include, a 6 hole academy course, a pitching and putting practice area, a covered driving range and an indoor swing clinic. The club also has a full-time PGA professional,

Jason McCreadie. Jason provides high quality coaching and runs a fully stocked pro shop, offering expert advice on golf clubs and other equipment. The club also offers a welcoming clubhouse, which is open to members and non-members, and is delighted to welcome a new head chef, Stephen

Nixon. Since joining Buchanan Castle in December, Stephen has been busy creating an appealing menu and working hard to make Buchanan Castle clubhouse a destination for tasty, good quality food for both members and non-members. Stephen said, 'My intention is to create a traditional menu with a modern twist, that appeals to a wider audience. He continues, ‘My ethos is about using local producers to supply fresh, good quality, seasonal produce and create traditional dishes that taste and look great! Scotland’s Larder is amazing so why would you not want to cook with it?' Come along and taste for yourself, doors are open and ready to welcome new customers! The clubhouse is also available to hire for private functions in the private dining room and larger events including weddings.

With a surge in the popularity of golf in the past 18 months, the club welcomes members from all abilities whether complete beginners to returners who haven’t played for a while. The club has launched a ‘Get into Golf ’ membership priced at just £150 which gives access to the academy course, a package of 1 to 1 lessons with our PGA pro Jason and the supply of golf equipment. There is no dress code required and by removing the barriers normally associated with taking up golf, such as being too expensive and too exclusive, the club hopes to welcome a wider range of members to take up golf. The R&A recently launched the Women in Golf Charter and Buchanan Castle is proud to be signed up to this charter. So, now really is the time for women and young people to come and learn the game, it is Scotland’s national game after all!

You can keep up to date with what’s happening at the club by following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and visiting our website www.buchanancastlegolfclub.co.uk

Park Life’s

Cullen Skink recipe

for the colder weather 500g undyed smoked haddock (skin on)
A bay leaf, Knob of butter, 1 onion (peeled and finely chopped)
1 leek (washed and cut into chunks)
2 medium potatoes (unpeeled & cut into chunks
) 500ml whole milk,
Chives (chopped to serve) 1. Put the fish into a pan large enough to hold it comfortably, and cover with about 300ml cold water. Add the bay leaf, and bring gently to the boil. By the time it comes to the boil, the fish should be just cooked – if it’s not, then give it another minute or so. Remove from the pan, and set aside to cool. Take the pan off the heat. 2. Melt the butter in another pan on a medium-low heat, and add the onion and the leek. Cover and allow to sweat, without colouring, for about 10 minutes until softened. Season with black pepper. 3. Add the potato and stir to coat with butter. Pour in the haddock cooking liquor and bay leaf, and bring to a simmer. Cook until the potato is tender. 4. Meanwhile, remove the skin, and any bones from the haddock, and break into flakes. 5. Lift out a generous slotted spoonful of potatoes and leeks, and set aside. Discard the bay leaf. Add the milk, and half the haddock to the pan, and either mash roughly or blend until smoothish. 6. Season to taste, and serve with a generous spoonful of the potato, leek and haddock mixture in each bowl, and a sprinkling of chives. Serve with some fresh local bread and enjoy!

Loch Venachar

Distance 7km Time 2Hrs

Take a walk on the wild side...

Stage 1 There is a car park on the left at the end of the public section of the road to Invertrossachs along the south shore of Loch Venachar. Begin the walk by following the forestry track which climbs gradually across the hillside from here. The route soon passes a bench near some electricity pylons. Keep straight ahead when another track joins in from the left. The next section of the forest has been clear-felled and now gives excellent views across the loch to Ben Ledi.

Stage 2 The tall sitka spruces soon block out the views once more (unless more felling has taken place). After another kilometre or more a fork is reached. Turn right here to reach an attractive little lochan almost hidden in the forest, a good place to spot Whooper Swans. The track climbs round the north side of the lochan before swinging to the right back into the trees.

Stage 3 The track now passes through a rocky little bealach or pass, with a small quarry on the right at the top. From here there are grand views over Loch Venachar. Almost immediately the track forks; take the right hand branch.

Stage 4 The track makes a long and winding descent to the shores of Loch Venachar where it meets part of the National Cycle Network, specifically Route 7 which runs from Carlisle to Inverness. Turn right along this, which is a private tarmac road at this point.

Stage 5 The route gives excellent views across the loch, especially of Ben Ledi directly opposite and the Venachar cafe on the opposite shore. Pass the Invertrossachs Scouting Centre and the Loch Venachar sailing club before the track eventually leads back to the start after around two and a half kilometres.
