Welcome

MAY - JUNE 2022 EDITION

In This Edition... Many Happy Returns!

although it is a late summer event, information is on page 28 to buy your tickets in advance.

No, it’s not our birthday! Continuing last issue’s optimistic tone, I’ve pulled out a few deserving returns to celebrate. After two years or so of cancellations and disappointment for residents and visitors around the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the picture locally is strongly pushing back to normal, or hopefully even better!

All over the Park and further afield you’ll find the return of a full programme of Highland Games, taking us right to the end of summer. The calendar of the events withing easy touching distance is on page 38. Enjoy the Park- we’re (fingers crossed) back!

Katrina, Lisa, Simon The Park Life Team

First up, and featured on our cover, is the muchmissed Drymen Show, making a reappearance after a two-year hiatus. This is possibly the Park’s most popular event, with visitors attracted from near and far. There are still a few exhibitors’ spaces available. Full details are on page 34 Moving a bit North, all the way to Loch Katrine, we’ll find the steamship Sir Walter Scott hoping to make a return in the not-too-distant future. Fundraising for restoration work is well under way but needs a final summer push to get back on the water. Of course, there are loads of other reasons to go to Loch Katrine, so while you’re there, pop in to one of the donation points. Check out page 10 for more info.

Katrina - Director Lisa - Sales Director

Another reappearance this year will be the Gartness Beer Festival, absent in the last couple of years. The festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and

100 Days to Save Scotland’s Oldest Steamship

T

he S.O.S., Save our Steamship public funding appeal, has entered a crucial phase with a final push to raise the outstanding funds required to restore the historic Steamship Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland’s most important maritime heritage treasures. The 122-year-old Steamship Sir Walter Scott has been out of service on Loch Katrine since 2020 following the discovery of cracks in the previous boilers. £330,000 of

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

the £500,000 required for the restoration has now been secured by the Steamship Trust, who are custodians of the Steamship Sir Walter Scott on behalf of the nation. You can support the appeal at www.saveoursteamship.com or post cheques made payable to Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust, Trossachs Pier, by Callander, FK17 8HZ. There are also donation points at several locations at Loch Katrine for visitors to use, and it is hoped businesses, local communities, and individuals will help organise additional fundraising activities to help achieve the final total and get the historic steamer back sailing later this summer.

WIN a private charter at Loch Katrine

A

s well as frequent scheduled sailings at Loch Katrine there is the option to charter the small Osprey boat for private trips. Park Life is delighted to offer readers the chance to win a free charter for up to 6 people with a special free competition. Osprey sails close to the islands and shoreline of Loch Katrine, with trips past Royal Cottage, built for Queen Victoria’s visit to Stronachlachar. Sailing on the loch, part of the Great Trossachs Forest, gets you up close to nature. You may even be lucky enough to see an Osprey or Golden Eagle.

To enter, go to parklifescotland.co.uk/competitions and answer a simple question. Good luck, and if you would like to charter Osprey or cruise one of the other boats, call 01877 376315.

spring is coming and so are bluebells A

round this time of year, bluebells emerge from the ground, often in droves, creating blankets of the beautiful, sweet-smelling flowers.

The deep violet-blue colour often grows in ancient woodland, and in the Park Life area, there are many places to see them.

The unspoilt Inchcailloch Island (by Balmaha) is a favourite location to see them, with the magical island covered with them. The island paths allow you to walk between them without the risk of damaging them.

Arrochar

The Trossachs also has some excellent places to see them, including Glen Finglas, by Brig o' Turk and at The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre by Aberfoyle. Get your timing right for a walk along the West Highland Way from Rowardennan to Inversnaid, through the RSPB reserve, and beyond to Inverarnan, you will see some stunning blankets of bluebells by the path. Bluebells on Beinn Dubh, the large hill by Luss, are best seen from the pier or beach at Luss, or nearby islands on Loch Lomond. At the head of Loch Long, Arrochar has lots of bluebells each spring. These are just a few examples across the Park Life area.

Did you know? • About half of the world’s bluebells are in the UK • Bluebells can take years to recover after damage by foot if leaves are crushed

West Highland Way Path

• Bees enjoy bluebell’s pollen and nectar, often taking it by biting a hole in the top of the flower • During Elizabethan times, starch from bluebells was used to stiffen ruffs • Bluebell juice was said to cure snake bites

Inversnaid

• Ants help to spread bluebell seeds • Bluebells are known by various names, including Common Bluebells, wood bells and fairy flowers.

summer's on its way! Park Life Gardening Tips for May & June As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It's also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.

may 1 Water early and late to get the most out of your water, recycle water when possible 2 Regularly hoe off weeds 3 Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days 4 Mow lawns weekly – but consider leaving some areas uncut for wildlife 5 Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges 6 Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs

june 1 Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes 2 Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds 3 Mow lawns at least once a week – but consider leaving some areas uncut for wildlife 4 Plant out summer bedding 5 Stake tall or floppy plants 6 Prune many spring-flowering shrubs 7 Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

Saturday May 28th 2022 www.drymenshow.com

S

trathendrick Agricultural Society is delighted to welcome everybody back to Drymen Show on Saturday May 28th.

At this year’s show along with our usual agricultural and light horse classes we are delighted to host a range of other attractions, many of which are supported by our local community. These include our Rural Tent, where ladies from four local institutes show a wide variety of skills in baking, flower arranging and crafting. If you're not a member but would like to take part the Rural Tent also hosts our Open Classes which anyone can enter and this year includes a new Craft Class (Bookmark any craft) as well as our Flower Arranging Class (Arrangement in a Teapot) and Drymen Show's very own Bake Off (Rainbow Cake). If you have a young family the School & Nursery Tent is always a favourite to look at the fabulous written and art work. There is also a great graffiti wall for the kids to make their mark on. When you've finished there you might want to pop up to our Pet Tent, via the Fun Fair, where we host the Rabbit Classes and you have the chance to pet various animals. In this tent we also host our "Meet the Farmer", "Meet The Vet", "Meet The Sheep", "Meet the Bird Of Prey" "Meet The Auctioneer" amongst other things, which is always a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the animals and people who work in farming.

34 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

In the main ring this year we're delighted to welcome “Clyde Warriers Flyball Club” who will give us a fabulous display of the most unique and exciting dog sport ever with teams of 4 dogs racing around their agility courses. They will also have a stand at the show where you can introduce your own dog to agility. As always dogs are very welcome to Drymen Show and you can even enter them on the day in our Dog Classes.

As well as our main ring attraction we'll also have our Grand Parade and Prize Giving, Heavy Horse Turnouts, Display of Vintage Tractors, Fire Engines & Cars, Children In Fancy Dress On Horseback Competition, Children’s Races and Tug Of War to entertain us throughout the day. Another favourite at the show is our Band Stage and we're delighted to welcome back our Champion Piper Donald MacKenzie and various bands including our Gartocharn Ukelele Band. The band stage sits just behind our Beer Tent, opposite our catering village and Sunshine & Shower Tent, where you can take a seat and watch the world go by. We're also looking forward to welcoming back our Craft and Trade Stands which offer some great purchases throughout the day, and in one of our Craft Tents we'll

also host our Walking Stick Class and the opportunity to see how they are made. If anyone locally would be interested in taking a trade or craft stand or indeed supporting or sponsoring the show in another way please go to our web site where all information is available. Finally, as many of you will be aware the bridge at Croftamie won't be fixed by the time the show comes around and as such we are anticipating heavier traffic than normal on the Stirling Road coming toward Drymen Bridge. We are making sure as many people are aware of this as possible so they can plan ahead. We are also in discussions with Stirling Council and the Police to hopefully provide traffic management on the day. Looking forward to seeing you all there and we'll make sure the Sun Shines too!

Park Life Recipe

Chocolate Cupcakes A little treat for all the Dads!

on Fathers Day Sunday 19th June 15 mins Prep time. Makes 12. Have Fun! Ingredients

Method

• 100g plain flour

STEP 1

• 20g cocoa powder

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, a pinch of salt and the butter in a free-standing electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk). Beat on a slow speed until you get a sandy consistency and everything is combined.

• 140g caster sugar • 1½ tsp baking powder • 40g unsalted butter (at room temperature) • 120ml whole milk • 1 egg • ¼ tsp vanilla extract

To Decorate • Buttercream

• Chocolate vermicelli (optional)

36 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

STEP 2 Whisk the milk, egg and vanilla extract together in a jug, then slowly pour about half into the flour mixture. Beat to combine and turn the mixer up to high speed, scraping any mixture from the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Pour in the remaining liquid and continue mixing for a couple more minutes until the mixture is smooth. Do not overmix.

STEP 3 Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until approximately two-thirds full. Bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the sponge bounces back when touched and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. STEP 4 Leave the cupcakes to cool slightly in the tray before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Meanwhile, make chocolate buttercream or plain buttercream and spread it over the cakes with a palette knife, or use a piping bag. Scatter over chocolate vermicelli, if you like.

Highland Games and Gatherings are back!

E

vents are thankfully making a return this summer. There are many excellent Highland Games and Gathering events in or near the Park Life area. Here is a list of the games around the region this year. Enjoy field and track events, highland dancing competitions and feats of skill and strength such as tossing the caber. The events occur in spectacular locations, such as by the lochside in Lochearnhead at Inverary Castle and for Bridge of Allan in view of National Wallace Monument. The Cowal Highland Gathering at Dunoon is the world’s biggest Highland Games, with Stirling Games expected to attract around 8,000 visitors. Many of the events have long histories, with the first Luss Highland Games held in 1875. The games often begin with a parade, in Killin this starts from the Falls of Dochart.

spring is in the air down on portnellan farm

S

pring has truly sprung on Portnellan Farm and despite a dusting of fresh snow on Ben Lomond the other day things are definitely starting to warm up again. It’s always a busy time on any farm and this year is no different. So far we’ve had 8 new calves born over the last week or so, all of whom are now happily skipping around in the paddock in front of the farm house. A welcome sight every morning on the short walk to work! Our glamping tent is now back up for the season and we welcomed our first visitors of the year a few days ago who had travelled all the way from Norfolk with their rather sweet wee dachshund. We’ve been hiring kayaks and paddle-boards from Portnellan for 7 years now and with the growing popularity (particularly of SUPing!) our new fleet of paddleboards and wetsuits have just arrived so if you’re looking for something fun to do over the easter break then why not get out on the water and explore Loch Lomond? Of course if that all sounds a bit much like hard work our speedboat tours might be more your thing.. Our Island Visits are proving to be hit this season and with the option of a walk round the beautiful nature reserve of Inchcailloch or a bite to eat in the restaurant on Inchmurrin there’s something for everyone!

EXPLORE

LOCH LOMOND FROM THE WATER

No trip to Loch Lomond is complete without taking to the water. Discover the loch by luxury speedboat, kayak or paddle board from Portnellan Farm and enjoy spectacular Scottish scenery in every direction.

STELLAR ANTIQUES of STRATHBLANE

Park Life | Business

Are you looking for assistance to VALUE, SELL, or CONSIGN to AUCTION? I am a LOCAL DEALER in all things VINTAGE and ANTIQUE. Donald here from Stellar Antiques in Strathblane - I am local and have 10 years experience in buying, selling and valuing for clients - whether clearing a whole property for sale, or selling single items or collections.

Recent highlights - high value vinyl records & antiquarian books. I am always looking for quality consignments to take to auction on your behalf - the choice of auction can make a very significant difference to the ultimate price achieved (the cost to you can be minimal)

I specialise in VINYL RECORDS COLLECTIONS large or small, but also deal with Furniture, Jewellery, Paintings, Books, Stamps and Collectable Items. Recently I was delighted to sell the rare & iconic 1st Led Zeppelin “Turquoise” album on behalf of a local client - £3000+ as well as a high value collection of ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS which were consigned to a high end Scottish Auction. Nowadays valuables can be anything...old, new, vintage and everything in between! Feel free to contact me with any information you can provide along with one or more photographs, email, text, or WhatsApp are all good! Or, of course I am very happy to make a house call and talk to you, it’s always better to see items close up and advise on a wide range of values. I can advise on the best route to follow to sell your items, whether it’s direct or via Auction, or even your own private sale.

We are also happy to give VALUATIONS and CONSIGN to AUCTION on your behalf HOUSE CLEARANCES • HOUSE CALLS | www.parklifescotland.co.uk 50 Donald Call on 07771 501560 • donald@stellarantiques.co.uk • www.stellarantiques.co.uk

go wild this summer… A

t RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond, we are gearing up our events programme for the Summer. The Wildlife Trail to Loch Lomond project has delivered a new trail that is even better than we could have imagined. It has made new areas of the reserve accessible to all, allowing people to explore the diverse habitats and the rich wildlife that make this place so special. We can’t wait to welcome all our visitors, old and new. We hope that our events programme offers a way to understand the work we do here and the nature it supports…and of course lots of opportunity to go wild and have fun outdoors with the whole family.

led by a knowledgeable guide. There are two levels of walks; All Ability – aimed at those who would like an easygoing stroll. They will be family-friendly, and all abilities accommodated, wildlife spotting along the way. Habitats & Species – aimed at those who would like more in-depth knowledge look at our practical management work and looking to venture further afield. Booking is essential with various Fridays available to book between May-June. Specialist Guided Walks: We have several specialist guided walks running in May and June. These events must be pre-booked online and have limited numbers. For full event listings and to book visit our events website: Dawn Chorus Guided Walk (14th May, 5am) Bluebells & Birdsong (29th May, 10am) Wild Food Foraging (19th June 1pm) Butterflies of Loch Lomond (25th June, 11am) Big Wild Summer: Looking to get out into nature as a family this Summer? Drop into the Nature Hub to collect your Big Wild Summer Activity Bag (£3.50) filled with selfled activity ideas to start your wild adventure, exploring the reserve. Staring 25th June and running throughout the summer holidays. No bookings required. FREE FAMILY FUN WEEKEND 11th-12th June

Weekday Wildlife Walks: The mix of habitats found at the reserve are what make it an amazing place for wildlife. The woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands provide food and shelter for a diverse range of creatures. Join us for a series of weekday wildlife walks

A DATE FOR THE DIARY…. To celebrate the opening of our new trail we are delighted to be able to welcome the local community for weekend of fun, games, exploring and wildlife spotting. With family activities, guided walks and much more, we can’t wait to open the new trail and set people off exploring this fantastic place. For up-to-date information, follow us on Twitter or check our webpage.

Park Life Walks Hill Climb - Beinn Dubh, Luss

B

einn Dubh at Luss is an exhilarating hill climb, around 3-hours in duration, to 642m. However, you don’t need to climb very far before getting some incredible views back to Luss and Loch Lomond’s islands. So, if you like Conic Hill, chances are you will also love Beinn Dubh. Park at the main car park for Luss; then, just to the left of the primary school, is

60 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

access to some steps leading to a footbridge over the A82 and the start of the walk. Having crossed the A82, you will see the gate and a sign pointing to Beinn Dubh. Next, you will see a gentle hill to climb in front of you. Get used to the fact that once you reach the top, there will be a larger one for you to climb, as this happens a lot during this walk, with what seems to be an

ever-increasing in size succession of hills. As promised, you will still be able to turn around and take in the view of Luss, with its pier and the nearby cluster of islands on Loch Lomond. Keep climbing, as there’s a long way still to go. Although a little boggy in places, the path is generally good, so walking shoes/ boots rather than trainers are best.

You are in line with Inchlonaig Island, which stands apart from the other clustered islands as you get higher. Ben Lomond is also in view and, along with Rowardennan, gets closer on your ascent. It’s a relief to get to the top and a sense of accomplishment. Then it’s the descent with the great views back to Luss.

Good Vet Visits

A trip to the vet's can be understandably a little daunting for our furry friends - especially during COVID with masks/visors. Here's some things you can try to help combat this going forward.

Examination Training

01360 550131

Regardless of the original reason for attending the practice, most pets will need a clinical exam. This generally involves a top to toe check and must feel a little strange if you aren't used to it! Why not practice some common bits at home so it's less of a big deal when the time comes at the practice? Remember to take things slowly - go at your dog/cat's own pace and if they aren't feeling it don't push them! Mouth - lift the lips at the sides of the mouth to get a good look at those gums and (hopefully) pearly whites! Ears - lift the flap of each ear to have a look inside. Paws - pick up each paw (ideally get them to voluntarily give you the front ones!) and try to have a look between the toes. Injections - gently pick up a bit of skin between the shoulder blades and drop it back down. Target training is also extremely useful for many situations but especially good for keeping pets still during exams of their eyes and ears! Positive Reinforcement

jacksonvets.co.uk 20-22 Balfron Road, Glasgow, G63 9NJ

What would your pet see as a reward for coming to the vet's? Treats? A walk at the ponds? Depending on the reason for their visit try to incorporate a good thing where possible that might just make them excited to come back!

cycling meanders

W

orking with the Cycling Friendly Communities of Drymen, Aberfoyle and Callander we have pulled together a collection of five of our favourite short cycling meanders in each town or village, all starting from the heart of the community.

These are designed to be short sociable rides, done in the company of friends and family and ridden in everyday clothes. They often involve a café stop at the beginning, end or in the middle, taking in the quiet roads, trails and cycle paths of that area. These rides help us discover

@trustinthepark

some hidden treasures, connect with nature, experience low carbon, independent travel, and enjoy some great, interesting company. The rides are based on routes used by the local Meander Groups. Drymen and Callander have regular rides starting at 10.00 on a Tuesday, from the Village Square and Ancaster Square respectively. The rides are led by local, knowledgeable and qualified cycle ride leaders. No need to book and no costs involved, just turn up with your bike ready to go. Look out for rides starting again soon in Aberfoyle, or drop us a message to let us know you are interested. Cycling has something to offer

for everyone, allowing us to travel through nature and with nature helping to mainstream low-carbon lifestyles and to have meaningful climate conversations with our peers. It can provide independent travel, adventure, fitness, health and social opportunities, the choice is yours.

making cyclists welcome Not only are our communities becoming more Cycling Friendly but many businesses within those communities are Welcoming Cyclists, because it is good for business and good for the environment. You will find many businesses have installed secure parking areas, they may have an e-bike charging point, maybe a repair stand and pump, many will provide free water bottle top ups. (see our website for locations throughout the Park) Visit our website to plan your own #cyclingmeanders and make sure you share on social media.
