We still don’t have many events unfortunately in the area but what we do have we should make that extra effort to support. The Scottish Wild Food Festival is going ahead at Tir na nOg on September 18th & 19th with a discount code for tickets on their advert on pages 34 - 37. Town & Country Designs & Coffee Shop are hosting a few events and you can see them listed on page 31, with a French Bistro Night on 24th September and a French Cafe Night on 22nd October. Celebrating Sir Walter Scott
E
xactly 250 years ago one of Scotland’s greatest writers was born. Sir Walter Scott invented what we know as the ‘historical novel’.
Sir Walter Scott
Scott was born in Edinburgh on 15th August 1771, he spent early years on relative’s farms in the Scottish Borders to help his recovery after suffering from polio. Back in Edinburgh he became an advocate and Sheriff-Depute in the late 1700’s. A string of poems including The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Marmion and the Lady of the Lake brought him fame and fortune. He moved onto new work, blending historical fact with fiction, to create historical novels. One of these was Waverely, bringing him the distinction of being the only railway station in the world to be named after a book.

A legend not only in his own lifetime, but a name that lives on, thanks to his muchcelebrated work. At the National Wallace Monument there is a bust of him in the ‘Hall of Heroes’, in the city of his birth a tall Victorian Gothic spire celebrates his life, at Princes Street, Edinburgh. There is also a monument in Glasgow at George Square and one in Central Park in New York. The 1810 ‘Lady of the Lake’ penned by Scott at Loch Katrine, put the Trossachs on the map. The poem was the blockbuster of the day and started a tourist boom, as people flocked to see for themselves the stunning landscapes, described so vividly by Scott.
Rob Roy
Outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, who was born at Portnellan on Loch Katrine was the inspiration for a future Scott
novel. Scott is celebrated as part of the long tradition of pleasure cruises on Loch Katrine. One of the boats is called ‘The Lady of the Lake’, whilst the 121-year-old Sir Walter Scott Steamship was launched in 1900.
The charitable trust which looks after the Steamship has recently launched an SOS Save our Steamship appeal to raise the £500,000 required to restore the magnificent steamer and get her sailing again. It would be fitting that in the 250th anniversary of Scott’s birth that the steamship trust can be successful with their appeal to save the Steamship that pays tribute to one of Scotland’s greatest writers.

The Scottish Wild Food Festival 2021
T
he Scottish Wild Food Festival was created back in 2019 as part of a Forth Valley and Lomond LEADER project, Wildwonders, which aimed to encourage a greater connection with foraging and wild food in the region as well as international exchange. The festival was put on hold – like everything else! – for 2020, but is making a comeback
this autumn, with a new venue, and an extended 2-day format on 18th & 19th September. The festival will be a family-friendly weekend event with facilitators from all over Scotland (and a few from further afield), with a packed schedule of free talks and activities included in the ticket price, including foraging walks, fungi identification talks, animal encounters, botanical storytelling, charcoal making, arts and crafts, and presentations on foraged drinks and delicacies. Over the two days, there will be also be opportunities to join in hands-on workshops and experiences, including

chocolate making with wild flavours, pizzas cooked outdoors with foraged toppings, sauerkraut methods, women’s circles, qi gong, yoga, tea tasting, medicinal herbs, native spices and a 3 course long table wild food banquet! In the various spaces around the picturesque grounds at Tir na nOg Holistic Centre, there will be an outdoor Wild Food Market, featuring local and wild food and drink to buy, and information stalls on sustainability and foraging. Festival goers will also have access to sessions at Harmony Fields animal sanctuary space, where you can meet the adorable rescue animals and enjoy some cuddles, and the Soup Dragon café, Tir na nOg shops, and holistic therapies will all be available over the weekend too.

Enjoying Our Big Wild Summer
T
he shade provided by the trees along Airey Woodland at RSPB Loch Lomond has been very welcome these past few weeks. Particularly while we have been busy running our Big Wild Summer activities for families.
been newts, pond snails and diving beetle larvae. Diving beetle larvae are also known as water tigers because of their amazing hunting skills under the water. They are the predators of the pond! As well as looking under the water there’s often a lot to see on the surface too. You will often catch glimpses of small, shiny whirligig beetles whizzing around in circles and pond skaters tiptoeing across the surface as if they are iceskating. As the summer comes to an end these creatures can grow to quite a size so worth coming down and booking a slot with one of us between 11am – 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays to see what you can find. Our Big Wild Summer pack (just £3.50) is full of things to find and listen out for on the trail, including a nature scavenger hunt and a wildlife spotter. There are also fun things you can do when you stop for lunch or get home, plus a pencil and certificate for completing the trail. We’ve also been pond dipping and bug hunting and families have been discovering all sorts of creatures on their adventures. Some of the pond residents that families have found recently have

A busy Summer down on the farm
W
ell, I don't think we can complain too much about the weather we’ve had this summer. It wasn’t so long ago that we were basking in bright sunshine and 27 degrees. The hot weather did give us one or two challenges on the farm though, like making sure the cattle had plenty to drink when the pond that supplies much of their water dried up!

Our farm tours have proved to be a hit with families both visiting and local to the area who always enjoy meeting the cows and having tea and home baking with the farmer afterwards. Although its not something we do regularly on Portnellan we hosted a wedding on the farm for some friends who did a wonderful job of organising a beautiful marquee to hold the reception in and made the most of the good weather to get married on the beach. They also made full use of the 230 acre farm and its location to organise a treasure hunt for guests before dinner and a sunset cruise on the speedboat afterwards.
In between the usual farm work our various activities have been incredibly busy this year as people continue to holiday

As we look towards late summer the next big job in the farming calendar will be to get a second cut of silage to ensure the cattle have enough feed to see them though the winter but as with many things on a farm this will be dictated by the weather so fingers crossed we haven’t seen the last of the good weather!

alfron Golf Club saw the conclusion of another successful block of junior coaching at Balfron Golf Club www.balfrongolfclub.co.uk
The programme was developed and delivered by Peter Baker, European Golf Teaching Federation (EGTF) accredited coach, and Ewan Currie, Junior Convenor. The junior golfers received a structured programme of golf tuition during the spring and summer term with the course beginning with a focus on golf rules and etiquette along with the development of skills and techniques, catering for
all junior golfing abilities. The young golfers had great fun developing their driving, iron play, and putting skills. These skills were put to the test in the junior coaching competition on the final evening in both a girls and boys event. The winner of the boys event was Clarke Ritchie and Sarah MacDonald won the girls event. n incredible 64% of Britain's workforce want to set up their own business. But, sadly, many business ideas don't come to life or struggle at the start; that's why we've compiled this list of top tips for new businesses.
HERE ARE THE TIPS: 1. Research your idea. Is it a good idea but a flawed business concept? Measure the gap in the market and try to determine the potential demand for your products or service.

2. Think carefully about your business name, check that it doesn't clash with any existing business names, or limit you to any future diversification and developments. Then, once you have your name, check that the domain is available and purchase it before anyone else does! 3. Don't hide behind your desk; get out and meet people. Seek early adopters and supporters, start networking and spreading the word. Listen very carefully to any feedback or suggestions. 4. Work out what you can do yourself and what you will need to learn. Consider bringing in external help and skills.
5. If you are starting a business with a friend or relative, then make sure that you've got a legal contract between yourselves. You should be clear on possible scenarios and what happens if one of you wants to exit etc. this will save lots of pain down the line!
9. Once you have developed your products and services, you need to have a unique selling point (USP) for them. A USP is essential for promoting your offering so you can explain what makes you different, special, better etc. 10. Stay strong! Starting a business is not easy, it can be a lonely business and daunting. Ensure you have a good support network of friends and loved ones.
6. Do the numbers, work out the viability of your plan. Will the business (once established) generate enough money to cover your costs and pay you? 7. Seek knowledge and advice from professionals. Business Gateway is excellent at training and support. 8. Be clear as to why you are starting your own business. You may earn more money as an employee, plus you will work very hard. Write down the reason(s) why starting a business is a good idea for you.
