Welcome

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER EDITION 2019

In This Edition... Okay, so the Summer season has cooled off, and we can all breathe easy before we start the off-season preparations for next year. So really what I mean is, it never stops! At heart, Park Life is a community magazine. We provide a service to our local community, putting people in touch to do business together, support community initiatives, and provide information about everything this community has to offer. This issue highlights some excellent community work taking place in the Park.

Our events listings are free to non-profit organisations, so if you are organising something locally, let us know so we can include you. As soon as your event is planned, send us the details to make sure you make the issue that’s best for you to spread the word. We are always on the lookout for interesting local stories and pictures. They don’t need to be professionally written or photographed- we can always apply a bit of polish here if needed! Katrina, Lisa, Heather

Locals in west Stirlingshire can now join the local food revolution

D

rymen based social enterprise The Hub G63 recently launched NeighbourFood Balfron, a click and collect farmers’ market. Customers can order online from local food makers and farms and then collect their order at Balfron High School every Thursday between 5-7pm. Collection points are also planned for Drymen and Aberfoyle. Local/homegrown produce G63 co-founder Ruth Glasgow added: “The new market complements our other sustainability projects. We’re developing a community vegetable garden where everyone can come along to help grow vegetables, or simply for a cup of tea and a chat. We’re also planning a zero-waste shop and wild food foraging courses.” Sister market Stirling NeighbourFood, run by Forth Environment Link, has been instrumental in getting Balfron’s market off the ground. The environmental charity was awarded £208,000 in March to set up eight new weekly markets across Forth Valley and Loch Lomond, Perth and Kinross, the Scottish Borders and Fife by 2020. A market was launched in Blairgowrie in August, with several more markets expected to launch this year.

"

Regional Food Project Coordinator, Stuart Guzinski from Forth Environment Link said: “The Regional Food project aims to increase rural access to Scotland’s larder by creating rural employment, offering small scale producers a safe route to market and connecting shoppers with the people who make or grow food locally. NeighbourFood is a sustainable way to food shop that supports local producers and cuts down food miles and food waste. Pre-ordering also means nothing’s wasted. Customers can plan their meals around what seasonal produce is available and producers only harvest or prepare as much as they need.”

We set up The Hub earlier this year to promote local food and support sustainable living. The new market supports this goal by giving communities the chance to buy local food online, support the rural economy and reduce their carbon footprint. Locals also get the chance to connect with the people who make their food at our weekly collections, boosting the relationship between farm and fork.

The Black Bull Hub & Pub Gartmore In September, the community of Gartmore, which already owns its Village Shop and Village Hall, bought the Black Bull to turn it into a ‘Hub & Pub’.

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

T

he purchase was supported by grant funding from the Scottish Land Fund and Community Shares Scotland, together with money raised by the community. The local fundraising effort took the form of shares subscribed for in a Community Benefit Society. There are now 240 Society members comprising villagers, family, friends, neighbours and village organisations. Word quickly spread of this exciting new venture which has received generous support from as far afield as Spain, Seattle, Singapore and Stronachlachar. Behind the scenes, it has been a hectic time, especially the crazy last day of the share offer, when applications were arriving every few minutes at the Village Shop and by email. There was a hive of activity to ensure the paperwork was done before letting everyone know

the necessary minimum target had been reached and exceeded by the deadline. It was an amazing community effort, from first being given the opportunity to undertake a community buyout of the Black Bull by the owners in May 2018, then holding an initial public meeting, followed by questionnaires, input from local organisations and lots of debate in the street, shop and pub. The community has now taken another vital village facility into its ownership, working hand-in-hand with other key local organisations to ensure that Gartmore continues to be a great place to live, work and visit, as well as protecting the services and sustainability of its Shop, Hall and Pub.

Having achieved the prime goal of community ownership, the hard work has now really begun. Currently the ‘Hub and Pub’ has a restaurant, bar, café and accommodation. The plan is to adapt the property and services over time to introduce a range of new community ‘hub’ facilities addressing the issues faced by many rural communities, including lack of facilities for an ageing population, social isolation and shortage of local activities for young people. It will be an interesting road ahead with villagers and members coming together as customers, volunteers, Hub users and staff. Please come and visit Gartmore and see what it’s all about. www.blackbullgartmore.com

Cellfield Dyslexia Success for Student Nicole

she would recommend Cellfield “in a heartbeat”.

T

wenty one year old student, Nicole recently completed the Cellfield Dyslexia programme in Stirling and loved every minute. Having considered it for a while, she decided the time was right for her: “I found it to be so beneficial and rewarding” she says and is proud to

report she now has the confidence to read a book for pleasure for the very first time. Cellfield gave her “a new lease of life with her learning” and significantly improved her memory. Being a bit older that many Cellfield clients, Nicole is keen to stress it’s never too late to get help with learning and

Based on neuroscience and brain plasticity research, Cellfield is a multi sensory programme which stimulates the brain networks processing visual and auditory aspects of reading. This leads to improved reading and language processing and, in many cases, is life changing because of the positive impact it has on overall confidence and selfbelief. Provided by teacher and former Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid (who also runs the successful Kip McGrath centre in Stirling), Cellfield is uniquely effective in helping people - of any age - to overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties. Time to take a closer look at

Aberfoyle...

...it's well worth a visit!

W

e all remember the good times, when we’d walk along an idyllic rural main street bustling with locals and visitors, popping in and out of the busy shops run by local traders. Of course, today it’s not like that, especially in Aberfoyle. No, Aberfoyle is all that and much more, thanks to a comprehensive regeneration effort kicked off by the

20 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Aberfoyle Village People, a volunteer organisation who used social media to spark a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of the village. The severe flooding of Aberfoyle in 2012 was a catalyst for the community to unite and get the village back on its feet. Once the spark had been created, the buzz around the village grew, existing businesses polished up and new ones opened.

Walking along the main street today you’ll see new shops and cafes, carefully selected by the locals to complement each other, and providing high quality products and services. You’ll also have the benefit of village-wide free public Wi-Fi, and a new Strathard Business Hub so this is a bit more than a bit of a polish for a pretty village. VisitScotland lends its support to the community’s efforts. This is joined-up thinking for all types of business operating in Aberfoyle, with an obvious emphasis on the needs of visiting tourists who are the main source of income for many businesses. Visitors needs and wants change over time, and Aberfoyle

has responded comprehensively. When you reach the end of the high street, look back, and what you won’t see are the shuttered empty shells which used to be there, and which mar many high streets in Scotland where they haven’t yet found that Aberfoyle spark. Many other villages around Scotland could benefit from a look at the Aberfoyle experience. Despite the poor economic climate generally in the UK, tourism in Scotland, and especially in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, is still very strong. Aberfoyle could be showing the way to a local economic resurgence.

"

We have had a very warm welcome from the people of Aberfoyle and in particular the other businesses along Main Street. We are delighted to have opened our latest coffee shop in Aberfoyle and are pleased with the excellent reaction to it

Geranium and Thyme Food for thought....

J

oanne Hamilton has cooked for my family regularly over the last three years: for weeks when I had all my family and grandchildren staying, for small dinner parties and freezer filling.

I have found her food consistently excellent both for dinner parties and family cooking. She is a very experienced cook and good at adapting menus for food intolerances. I have always found her very honest and reliable, very easy to have around the house and to work with. I have recommended her to friends who were also delighted with her work. Irene Whitson Drymen

My name is Joanne and I’m the chef behind Geranium and Thyme, a small creative catering business based by Loch Lomond. I bring ten years experience from working throughout Europe. I create bespoke seasonal menus working with the finest local suppliers in the surrounding area, catering for small events, dinner parties, celebration cakes and freezer filling etc.

GLASGOW STUMP REMOVAL

“passionate about plants

Glasgow, Edinburgh & Stirling

Tree & Hedge Stump Removal What we do with your unwanted tree stumps. Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Glasgow Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. We use various machines to efficiently and effectively grind stumps of different sizes and in awkward access locations.
