Lifetime Achievement Award for Sandy Fraser of The Oak Tree Inn

andy Fraser, the Oak Tree Inn founder, was recently presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 Scottish Bar & Pub Awards. We met Sandy the following day, who told us that he was shocked and surprised to receive the award and had no idea he was in line to receive it. He paid tribute to his family, to who he attributes the success too "My wife Lucy and each of our 8 children have played a huge part

Lucy and some of his children Stuart, David, Emma, Nina and Ben were there to join him on stage at the glitzy event at The Hilton Hotel in Glasgow. The Fraser Family had been invited to the awards in recognition of their outstanding sustainability initiatives.

Sandy and Lucy had a clear vision for The Oak Tree when they launched it in 1997. A warm and welcoming pub and restaurant for locals, walkers and visitors that wasn't another pub with a TV showing football. From little acorns, the inn quickly became one of the most popular destinations in Loch Lomond and a highlight of the West Highland Way. The family's hard work and reinvestment have introduced new facilities, including a village shop, coffee shops, B&B accommodation, etc. However, the driving force of recent years is new eco-friendly ways to run their operation sustainably.

The Oak Tree Inn is responsible for the transformation of Balmaha, creating the picturesque lochside village that we know and love today. Sandy plays an active role and can often be found planting and watering flowers or picking up litter. Sandy was also an early supporter of the 'Our Park' scheme by charity Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, where visitor donations help to support local conservation and heritage projects. It was his vital role that helped established the famous Tom Weir Statue. Sandy also worked long and hard to create a new pontoon, providing water access, with disabled access onto cruise boats. Congratulations Sandy, we are sure the local community will all join us in celebrating your well-deserved award.

Wildlife Trail to Loch Lomond is Go!

There will be viewing areas and interpretation, all designed with accessibility for visitors with varying mobility needs in mind, allowing more people to explore and immerse themselves in this incredible place. Not only a great addition to the visitor experience, this project will unlock opportunities for nature

new trail. This will include work with local organisations such as Green Routes, supporting adults with reduced learning capabilities to provide them with skills and qualifications in horticulture; Tullochan, supporting young people in West Dunbartonshire

We will work with local primary schools, delivering citizen science activities relating to the incredibly special population of Greenland White-fronted Geese that overwinter locally. We’re also working with Vale of Leven Academy and Choices School in Alexandria to develop skills and confidence among pupils who would benefit from a hands-on approach to learning, outwith the mainstream model of education. Lastly, we are supporting the recruitment of a Trainee Reserve Assistant supported through the UK Government Kickstart Scheme. Wildlife Trail to Loch Lomond is made possible with thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund. November - Winter is on its way

December - Winter Frost

Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can't, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

As we approach the shortest day of the year in December you will need work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.

1 Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds

1 Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place

2 Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging 3 Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year 4 Prune roses to prevent wind-rock 5 Plant out winter bedding

2 Check that greenhouse heaters are working 3 Insulate outdoor taps & prevent ponds from freezing 4 Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls)

6 Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem

5 Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding

7 Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well

6 Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops

8 Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks

7 Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted

9 Put out bird food to encourage birds into the garden

8 Take hardwood cuttings

10 Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting

Park Life Review... Girls Lunch Perch Café & Restaurant at Loch Lomond Waterfront

e hadn’t done a girls’ lunch for ages (you might guess why), so now that we can, we thought we’d give it a go not to far from home. Home for all of us is in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, so we had a fair bit of choice. The recently opened Perch in Balmaha looked like a good candidate, since their website ticked all our boxes, including being on our doorstep! One of those ticked boxes was the chilled wine and champagne on the table when we arrived, as ordered when we booked. Perch caters for a wide variety of clientele, and the ambience on arrival seems to fit, whether you are a bit glammed-up for a midweek lunch, like us, an exhausted walking group on the West Highland Way, popping in with your dog , or writing your novel

on your laptop. It reminded me a little of Glasgow’s west end, quality fabrics and cosy colours over a rustic background, very welcoming. So, to lunch. A glance at the wine list and the menu was enough to satisfy us that our four entirely different palates would be satisfied. Once we’d settled down, we were promptly served our arrival drinks and ordered from the menu. There was a carefully curated selection of a few dishes and specials with enough variety to give each of us a decent choice to mull over. I went with the shredded Mozzarella salad, a Mediterranean colour fest on the plate and on the palate, and my lunch companions had various of the home-made savoury tarts, a delicious speciality of the house. The food was served well, and in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere we all got on

with the business of catching up with each other. Breakfast is served all day, so I expect that we’ll return to sample that sometime soon, probably attired in our walking gear and with a dog or two. Our kids are all rather too old to eat from the Little Percher’s kids’ menu, so I don’t think they’ll be invited (they can bring their own kids), so it will just be us again to catch up with a blether and enjoy the surroundings. And if it’s late enough in the day, maybe a G&T and home-made cake with breakfast isn’t too decadent! Christmas Canapés deep-fried olives Coat feta-stuffed olives with juniper-flavoured breadcrumbs to make these easy canapés. Serve on skewers with a lemon and vermouth mayonnaise on the side. Ingredients • 100g panko or coarse dried breadcrumbs • 4 crushed juniper berries • 160g feta-stuffed olives • 3 tbsp plain flour • 1 egg , beaten • 300ml vegetable oil For the lemon and vermouth mayo • 2 tsp dry vermouth • 100g mayonnaise • 1 tsp lemon juice Method • STEP 1 Crush the breadcrumbs in a bag using a rolling pin or in a food processor. Tip into a shallow dish with the berries, then season and set aside. Toss the olives in the flour. Put the beaten egg in a large bowl, add the coated olives and move them around to coat. Turn them one by one in the breadcrumb mixture, then put on a plate until ready to fry.

brie & cranberry twists

Ingredients • 12 sheets filo pastry • 100g butter, melted • 250g brie, cut into 18 chunky fingers • 18 tsp cranberry sauce • 50g walnuts, roughly chopped • sprinkling of poppy seeds Method • STEP 1 Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Stack two of the filo sheets. With a widest edge facing you, brush with some melted butter. Put three brie fingers at even intervals across the bottom of the filo. Top each finger with 1 tsp cranberry sauce, then sprinkle over a few chopped walnuts. • STEP 2 Roll up the filo from the bottom. Cut into three parcels, and twist the ends to seal. Brush with more butter and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Bake for 10 mins. Or, cover the unbaked twists with cling film, chill for up to 1 day and bake just before serving.

• STEP 2 Heat the oil in a large pan to 180C, then fry the olives for 1-2 mins, or until golden and sizzling. Drain on kitchen paper and leave to cool for a few mins as they'll be very hot inside. • STEP 3 To make the lemon and vermouth mayo, mix the vermouth with the mayonnaise and lemon juice. Serve the warm, deep-fried olives alongside the mayo.

hristmas Trees are not just for Christmas; it's an all-year labour of love at Duff Christmas Tree Farm to be ready in time for opening to the public at the end of each November. Much of the work is carried out by hand, with many years of expertise to ensure a healthy crop of Christmas Trees that will last longer once cut.

The Duff Family farm supplies many wholesale customers throughout the UK, with customers valuing the high quality of their trees. The considerable care provided to trees and the farm's soil quality and moisture levels helps to produce excellent crops. Last year, Covid travel restrictions thankfully eased in time for the busy December weekends. However, local deliveries were introduced to ensure no one in the Park Life area was disappointed; these will continue this season.

Families enjoy their annual trip to the farm, where they can select and then cut their choice of Christmas Tree in a safe environment. For many, it is a much-loved family tradition, symbolising the start of their Christmas festivities.

The coffee and food trucks enhance the atmosphere at weekends; and will return this year. Flick's homemade jams are legendary, and she has been working hard in recent weeks producing a big batch for the season. By popular demand, the farm will also be selling wreaths and stands.

Last year the Duff’s generously donated to red squirrel conservation through local charity Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs for each 'cut your own' tree sold. Support will continue this year, so look out once again for the farm's red squirrel mascot.

The support for red squirrel conservation is one of the many initiatives by Duff Christmas Tree farm to help carbon reduction, with the priority pledge of planting two trees for each one felled. Also, 17-acres of new woodlands have been created with oak, birch, rowan, and hazel, whilst 50-acres semi-ancient woodlands ensure native species are preserved. he Virtual Village Market was launched in 2020 to help local businesses during the pandemic. We welcomed close to a thousand visitors over the first weekend. Not bad for a little pop up market which was created on a whim in reaction to a pandemic. We also raised lots of money for charity thanks to our very generous community who offered up raffle prizes and bought tickets.

The first market brought a bit of festive cheer during what was a very difficult time. A time when businesses were struggling and Christmas markets were closed for business. During this time what shone through was the resolve and spirit of our community who came together and supported our market in their droves. So many of you shopped local last year and your love and support was palpable.

The good news is we're doing it all again! Once more with your help we will be supporting small businesses, artists, crafters and artisan producers from across Scotland. It's true that each time one of our stall holders makes a sale they do a happy dance around their kitchen table and we want to make a lot of people dance this year. We'll have an array of amazing gift ideas

for all the family, delicious festive food, personalised gifts, unique gifts and gifts for the dog. We'll also have our fabulously fun art competition for the kids. So why not join us. We'll be throwing open the doors to our festive market at 6pm on Friday 3rd December. We look forward to seeing you then!
