Welcome

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2020 EDITION

In This Edition...

So, that's enough of 2020... We’re coming to the end of the year already! Of course, we all hoped that by this time we’d be back to normal. Although we’ve got a lot of our freedom back, we still have to put up with some restrictions for the good of our community’s health. Those restrictions mean that we are tempted more than ever to use the online giants for our purchases, so here is a plea (again, since you may have heard this before). Buy Local or Bye Bye Local.

So, that’s enough of 2020; not a year to remember, but one you won’t forget! Let’s get on with 2021 and look forward to a better year ahead. Katrina, Lisa, Simon & Paul The Park Life Team

Our cafes, pubs and restaurants are under severe pressure, especially as this is written while additional restrictions are place on this part of the country. Hopefully by the time you read this, they will be fully open again, so be sure to meet up and enjoy their services in the safe environment they offer. Yes, our local businesses struggle to stay viable while delivering the personal community service we all love. We’d love for them to still be here when we are truly back to normal. Christmas events are thin on the ground this year, so our festive events listings this year is cast over a wider area to give you a bit more choice. These event plans are built on shifting sands, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for hints, tips and latest news.

Return of the Reds

T

he native red squirrel in the UK is in danger with approximately 140,000 remaining, of which 75% are in Scotland. The reduction of the red squirrel population is a result of the spread of the non-native grey squirrels, which not only compete for food and space but carry a disease called squirrelpox which is fatal to red squirrels. Although carriers themselves, the greys are immune to the disease. In recent years red squirrels have made a comeback, particularly in Scotland. The National Park is almost a red-only zone, thanks to a concerted effort since the start of the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) project in 2009. In Balmaha the numbers are up, with many sightings. They’ve occasionally been spotted collecting hazelnuts from the trees next to the car park, much to the delight of visitors.

6

|

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

A Red Squirrel Trail has been introduced to Balmaha, an initiative by conservation charity Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, National Park Authority and Saving Red Squirrel’s. The trail is signed from the Visitor Centre (currently being refurbished) and there are plans for children’s activities from nearby St Mocha Coffee Shop whose Loch Lomond Coffee Co. has an emblem of a red squirrel on their logo.

Also, in the Trossachs at Callander there is work being done by local residents and landowners to create a corridor of control to reduce the likelihood of grey squirrels coming into the National Park from Stirling. Other sightings around the Park Life area include Gartocharn and Balloch Castle Country Park. Further afield in Cowal, Benmore Botanical Garden and Cormonachan Woodlands, by Loch Goil, both have hides and feeding stations. One place where Red Squirrels are especially thriving is Arran, as there are only reds on the island, with no greys. You’ll find a hide in the grounds of Brodick Castle.

how can you help red squirrel’s? 1) Follow SSRS scottishsquirrels.org.uk @ScotSquirrels 2) Provide food in your garden using a feeder from early spring (make sure to clean monthly to prevent risk of spreading disease) St Mocha support Red Squirrel conservation through sales of bags of their roasted coffee beans, sold on-line and in their shops at Balmaha and Aberfoyle. The Lodge at Aberfyole is a good place to see Red Squirrels, using their hide.

Park Life Interview with Kirsten Lyall of Goldcrest Therapy & Coaching

Q1 What are the main challenges of your job during this difficult time. Definitely the shift from working with clients face-to-face to working remotely. The concern was that the ability for myself to connect with individuals is lessened or lost entirely because we are not in the room together, but thankfully the transition went smoothly. The technical aspects have been tricky too - when in person you do not need to worry about patchy Wi-fi! Q2 How have you had to adapt your counselling outlook to meet clients needs. As well as changing how I can carry out my work, the needs of those I work with has changed too. People have lost so much of the day-to-day normalities of life which would have given them extra support, such as group activities, church services or just catching up with friends in a cafe. There is a lot of anxiety around the uncertainty of the future with situations changing more-or-less overnight. We are all in this strange new time together. Q3 Have you any advice for the Park Life readers on how to help manage themselves through the Winter months. Early in lockdown it became apparent that the need to adapt and 'go with the flow' would be very helpful in maintaining balance of mind - in other words, I would encourage readers to be kind to themselves and allow flexibility in what will help make each day easier. Some days you may feel more anxious than others - if a duvet day and Christmas films (yes, even in October) will make you feel good, do that. Don't pile guilt on top. As Winter gives way to Spring, you will have better days.

Escape from Covid:

black bull restaurant, gartmore By Mike McGinn

O

ut for dinner for the first time since lockdown, so why not try the newly spruced up Black Bull in the bucolic setting of Gartmore? So, we did, and we tried to put Covid behind us for the evening. And it worked. The necessarily spaced out furnishings and strangely quiet ambience were reminders, as were the hand sanitisers and additional signs, but once we were seated and greeted (masked, of course) we felt we were taking a break from the world. The Black Bull has also taken a break from its past as a locals only traditional bar with a tacked-on function room at the rear. It has been extensively refurbished, but manages to keep its local feel and atmosphere, and hence it has kept its local customers. Now it welcomes more visitors with a refurbished and refreshed bar. The style is very much traditional, but everything looks tasteful and fresh. Gone is the old function room which has been transformed into a roomy and stylish restaurant. This provides an excuse to go back once we’re all back to normal, since the artificially spaced seating and lack of music will be restored, and the atmosphere will take another step up. Change of chef means change of menu, and the choice and variety look like they should please everyone, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The menu is keenly priced, certainly looking attractive for tourist families, although not extensive. Everything on it can be had as a takeaway at the moment, but I expect that may change in future. There are some Scottish staples, and one or two slightly more upmarket surprises. To start, Katrina had Mushroom

Arancini and I had Ham Hock Terrine, both of which went down very well. Simple starters well presented, and well appreciated. For mains, we had the Pan-Fried Chicken Breast and the Pork Belly. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy with a creamy peppercorn sauce, with just enough of a spicy bite to register. Katrina’s wariness of spicy food was not challenged. I had the Pork Belly with Fondant Potato and Apple Sauce. Pork belly is a fatty dish, and it can be overpowering if not crisped up properly. Needless to say, it was just right. And the portions were just right too, enough to keep you satisfied, but leaving a little corner if you wanted to fit in a dessert. Which we didn’t, not this time anyway. The restaurant wasn’t full, given it was a Tuesday evening in the middle of lack of tourist season, but there were enough guests to give it a nice atmosphere. I’m sure that with publicity and word of mouth doing their jobs, when the opportunity comes this will become a regular destination spot for the evening among tourists and outlying locals. The Black Bull is a community run pub and restaurant, with all the professionalism of an established commercial establishment. It deserves to stand alongside and compete for your custom on merit alone, although in the back of your mind, you will probably bear in mind what it provides to Gartmore. But never mind that; just go and enjoy it. We did, and we’ll be back.

DRYMEN

Business Hub

W

hen Fraser C Robb were planning a new Business Hub for Drymen little did they think how vital it would become in the new world that we find ourselves in.

"

We recently used Drymen Business Hub for the first time for staff training. The space was ideal for our needs, plus importantly it provided the safe environment that we required. I will be using the facility again and am delighted that Drymen now has this excellent business resource.

"

Gordon Strang, owner, The Clachan

As we know Covid-19 has changed everything. Whilst many people have been encouraged to work from home, as opposed to their usual workplace this is not without challenges. Users to Drymen Business Hub have been pleased to be able to access workspaces that are safe, but away from distractions within their homes. A range of businesses and organisations have used the workspace as an alternative to their usual office environment. The Hub lends itself for video meetings, small distanced meetings and quiet workspaces, ideal for being productive and communicating with colleagues, clients and suppliers. As a special incentive to encourage trial of the workspace environments there is currently an offer for half price use of Drymen Business Hub if booked by the end of 2020. These bookings can be redeemed throughout 2021. Visit the website www.drymenhub.co.uk or arrange a viewing of the hub, which is above the Fraser C Robb showroom on Stirling Road. There is free parking and separate access to the hub.

"

I have found Drymen Business Hub to be the ideal place for client meetings. Having a safe environment to hold meetings has been vital for trading. I would highly recommend this facility to local businesses.

RSPB Loch Lomond reserve reopened As we moved into Autumn the car park at RSPB Loch Lomond was reopened. Initially the fear was that the increased number of visitors might disturb the wildlife. Luckily that didn’t happen, and people have been largely very respectful of the reserve and of the new guidelines, which have sadly meant the temporary closure of our

Nature Hub. For many, lockdown has brought a deeper connection to nature, and that’s what we want to help enable here at RSPB Loch Lomond. We have a lot of special wildlife in the National park and it’s important to protect that, as well as raising awareness. I see so many lovely moments, from a child seeing their

first Osprey to a couple watching geese fly over at sunrise on their wedding anniversary. We are currently working hard to restore grassland for the geese as well as creating more wetland habitat for vulnerable waders and species such as Spotted crake, Grasshopper warbler and Reed bunting. So why not come visit us soon?

If you’d like to help nature you can join the RSPB online, follow RSPB Scotland on social media or sign our ‘Revive Our World’ campaign at: www.bit.ly/rspb-row

Take a wee trip down The But & Ben

T

he But & Ben was formaly The Wayfarers Pub in Croftamie and was purchased by the Cunningham family last spring. Since being purchased, the building has been entirely revamped. The original building work and dĂŠcor dates back to 1986 and the building has been totally transformed into a cosy and light space with some of the original elements incorporated. The outside area around the building has been improved and there is now a furnished deck at the front of the building for customers to sit and enjoy, along with awning and patio heaters for the colder days. Croftamie is just outside Drymen and the the perfect stop for travellers, walkers and cyclists enjoying the national park. The But & Ben was due to open inside this Easter but unfortunately lockdown put a stop to that and the wee takeaway window was created. The family run business is operated by mother and daughter duo: Barbara and Hannah. Barbara has a passion for baking and always dreamt of owning her own coffee shop.

28 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

The takeaway window offers fresh ground coffee, hot breakfast rolls, soup, baquettes and toasties, and of course lots of home baking. The home-baking goes down a treat and is all done in- house. The best sellers are strawberry tarts and empire biscuits. The But & Ben prides itself on using local suppliers, France Farm Shop for fruit and veg and David MacDonald Butchers for their meat. All food is made from scratch inhouse, even the ham for your baguettes is boiled then baked in their kitchen and the very popular coronation chicken all prepared from scratch. The takeaway window and outdoor seating gives people the option to either pick up and go or to sit outside and enjoy great food and coffee at their leisure. The takeaway window is currently operating Monday to Saturday 9am - 4.30pm, Sundays 10am -4.30pm and is closed on a Monday. Barbara and Hannah hope to open inside in the not too distant future and look forward to welcoming you and they will make sure to get the log burning stove on. All updates regarding opening inside will be on facebook and instagram@thebutandben, please like!

make this christmas perfect with a visit to duff christmas tree farm!

T

hroughout the year the Duff family nurture and look after their plantation of Christmas Trees, near Buchlyvie, with much of the work being carried out by hand. Christmas Trees from the farm are sold throughout the UK, with the Scottish climate and soil on the farm helping to create high quality and long-lasting trees.

For many visitors to the farm each December the cut your own Christmas Tree option is a family highlight of the festive period. This year as a response to Covid-19 extra measures have been put in place to ensure distancing and therefore allow this tradition to continue safely. You can read about the safety measures on the Duff Christmas Tree Farm website at www.dufftrees.co.uk Also, at the website you will find a new on-line shop where you can order a Christmas Tree, with regular deliveries to local postcodes. Visitors to the farm can also choose from a range of pre-cut trees. Duff Christmas Tree Farm has strong environmental credentials. For ever one tree felled, two are planted. The family has created new woodlands and their plantation absorbs carbo dioxide to help support the eco system, with the plantation home to wildlife such as birds, voles and birds of prey. This year Duff Christmas Tree Farm are collecting donations on behalf of the Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, a heritage and conservation charity. The charity has supported many projects in the National Park such as Red Squirrel Trails, paths maintenance and Tom Weir’s Rest, with statue, picnic area and nature viewing.

Park Life RECIPE

I

just wanted to say hello from Scotia Spice in these very strange times that we are living in. Life has changed for every one of us and there are ongoing huge challenges. We had a lot of exciting new plans for the end of the year which won't happen now. I’m very saddened that I will not see many of you at the events we usually gather at to chat and catch up, and where you always amaze me with your ongoing support of my small business. Many of you have, and all of you can, order online so a delicious curry is only a delivery away, it’s very humbling and massively appreciated to see your support in such turbulent times. In just a few weeks earlier in the year we got used to standing in queues, and now think of protecting ourselves and others before heading out.

Yasmin's Delicious Dhal 15m prep/ 45m cooking/makes 4 servings I expect many of you like me are finding store cupboard ingredients are coming more and more to the front. Yes, I am going to go on about lentils, again! Tasty, nutritious, protein packed and cheap, most lentils seem to be available on the shelves. So it seems like a good time to share my dhal recipe. This is made with good old fashioned red lentils if you don’t have them substitute with any other lentils but remember the texture may be different. It’s a delicious dish cold too, have it as part of a salad bowl or in a sandwich or on crispbreads. I’ve listed the spices that you need in the recipe but you can also get hold of our dhal recipe kit right here on our website www.scotiaspice.co.uk. Enjoy, and stay safe everyone. Yasmin

INGREDIANTS 250g red lentils 1l water 2 large onion, halved and sliced 2 garlic clove, crushed 2 tsp grated fresh ginger 1 pouch dhal spice blend Salt to taste 4 tbsp vegetable oil METHOD Add the water, lentils, garlic, ginger and the spice blend and salt to taste to a medium saucepan. Place a third of the onion slices, preferably of a similar size, into a non-stick frying pan with the oil and set aside. Add the remaining two thirds of the onion to the lentils. Bring the lentils to the boil and set to a steady simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring every now and then. By now the lentils should have thoroughly broken down to give you a sauce with a creamy consistency. Add more water to the pan if required. At this stage fry the onions on a high heat to a deep golden brown. Pour the onions and the oil over the lentils – being careful as the oil will sizzle and may spit – and stir through. Suitable for home freezing

Time to tackle The Dumpling this Christmas!

I

f you’re looking for a Christmas walk to get some fresh air and good views then climb Duncryne Hill, near Gartocharn.

Better known to many of us as The Dumpling, this is a fairly short walk. It won’t take you too long to climb, but once you reach the summit you will get a panoramic view of Loch Lomond and its islands. Only 465 feet above sea level, but one of the best views of Loch Lomond. The highest points in view, including Ben Lomond and surrounding hills could be capped with snow on their peaks. A crisp cold day with the sun low in the sky can make these ideal conditions for photography, so take your camera. To get to the Dumpling take the turning next to House of Darrach in Gartocharn (turning on the same side as House of Darrach) and follow Duncryne Road for a short distance, looking for parking spots on the left. There is a sign (pictured), so you’ll know you’ve found the start of the walk. It might be tight for parking, especially if it’s a nice day, as other people could well have had the same idea as you. Be aware that the path could be very muddy so make sure you’ve got appropriate footwear. Once you’ve completed your walk and you want to see a guide to the wonderful vista head to the Millennium Hall in Gartocharn village. Outside at the back of the hall is a guide, installed in 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee pinpointing all of the mountains and islands on view. For more on walking, cycling and activities in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs take a look at the See Loch Lomond website www.seelochlomond.co.uk

Christmas & Festive Events

This year’s Christmas and festive period events have been moulded to suit our changed world. Not everything is available, and those which are going ahead will inevitably have less capacity. Booking ahead is pretty much essential, so make sure you book early and get the available spots. These listings are as planned at the time of going to print. Best to check in advance before setting out for those which don’t require booking, since we can’t predict how things will change. Make sure your day out is going to happen!

Santa’s Woodland Experience

are still in the planning stage at the time of going to print, so final plans will need to be checked in advance. If you are driving into Edinburgh remember that you can always use the park and ride on the tram from Ingliston or the park & ride bus from Sherrifhall, along with various others around the edge of the city.

Beecraigs Festive Forest 4th - 24th Dec

The Scottish woodland Santa Experience cannot return to North Ballochruin Farm at Balfron Station this year. It is believed that Santa’s vulnerable category status makes this unsuitable. Instead, though, this year Santa@Home takes its place. From your own home you and your family can welcome Santa’s magic, if not Santa himself. With prices starting from £24.99, we will send you a parcel containing wrapped gifts and other surprises, along with a special video message from Santa, personalised for your children. All you will need to unleash the magic is a USB port, and to follow our instructions included in the pack!

Edinburgh has a fantastic Christmas programme, with many elements beginning around the 17th Nov From the Christmas market, to shows and ice skating, there is so much to see. You will love to visit the Christmas market and look at all the interesting gifts and decorations, go on some of the rides (the Ferris wheel has amazing views!) and watch the ice skaters. In 2020 Edinburgh’s Christmas will look a little different. To help with social distancing there are plans to have stalls throughout a larger area along the Royal Mile and other nearby streets. The ferris wheel and star flyer will be located elsewhere rather than Princes Gardens to reduce the damage to the ground that has happened in previous years. Things

2020 is only the 2nd year of Beecraigs Festive Forest near Linlithgow. This December they will be hosting another sensory explosion of seasonal magic. There will be a 1.7km illuminated trail throughout the forest, with special effects and sounds. The trail will be open between 4.00pm and 10pm each day. Along with the illuminations there will be a chance to post your letter to Santa, meet Santa himself in his special woodland grotto, plus hear him tell an enchanting story. Each child will be a given a small gift when they visit Santa. There will be plenty of other fun activities and surprises to expect too, with something for all the family. As parking is limited you will need to buy a parking ticket or use the free shuttle bus from Linlithgow.

Park Life

Christmas & Festive Events

Wondrous Woods at Hopetoun House The first light trail to open this year in Scotland is Wondrous Woods at Hopetoun House. They are open from October 21st to November 15th, where you can walk through the 300 year old woods on a stunning 2km trail. Tickets are on sale now for this magical mystical journey!

Christmas At The Botanics

then have festive food and drink in the Restoration Yard. The dates are the 5-6th, 11-13th, 17-23rd, 27-31st December and 2-3rd January, entry from 4.30-6pm. If the event is postponed or cancelled due to tightening of restrictions your tickets can be exchanged or refunded.

Enjoy stunning illuminations at Five Sisters Zoo 1st - 23rd Dec, 5pm - 9pm

Edinburgh Botanic Gardens will be continuing with their spectacular light display in 2020. It looks pretty amazing from pictures and the reviews are great. The trail is open from the 26th November through to the 3rd January 2020. Book quickly!

Spectacle Of Light At Dalkeith Country Park

There will be light tunnels, life sized animal lanterns and a covered, heated bar area. More details will follow on their website, tickets are on sale now.

This year the Spectacle of Light at Dalkeith Country Park will stretch along an illuminated trail winding beside the river with pixie lights and starbursts reflected in the water. Enjoy the illuminated Fort Douglas and play under the stars,

Gardening Tips 1 Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds

7 Insulate outdoor containers from frost bubblewrap works well

2 Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging

8 Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks

3 Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year

9 Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden

4 Prune roses to prevent wind-rock 5 Plant out winter bedding 6 Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem

54 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

10 Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting

rose pruning general tip s When tackling roses bear the following in mind; • Cuts should be no more than 5mm (¼ in) above a bud and should slope downwards away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud. This applies to all cuts, whether removing dead wood, deadheading or annual pruning • Cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open-centred shape. With roses of spreading habit, prune some stems to inward-facing buds to encourage more upright growth • Cut to the appropriate height, if a dormant bud is not visible • Cuts must be clean, so keep your secateurs sharp. For larger stems, use loppers or a pruning saw • Prune dieback to healthy white pith • Cut out dead and diseased stems and spindly and crossing stems • Aim for well-spaced stems that allow free air flow • On established roses, cut out poorly flowering old wood and saw away old stubs that have failed to produce new shoots • With the exception of climbing roses and shrub roses, prune all newly planted roses hard to encourage vigorous shoots • Trace suckers back to the roots from which they grow and pull them away

GLASGOW STUMP REMOVAL

Park Life | Business

Stirling, Loch Lomond & Glasgow Tree & Hedge Stump Removal What we do with your unwanted tree stumps.

Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Glasgow Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. We use various machines to efficiently and effectively grind stumps of different sizes and in awkward access locations.

Arborist Services We also provide full arborist services through our associates, including felling, crown thinning and lifting, pollarding etc.

Kippen & Gargunnock Equine Access Group (KAGE)

K

ippen & Gargunnock Equine Access Group (KAGE) is a community group, affiliated with the British Horse Society, made up of equine enthusiasts based within the local Kippen, Gargunnock and surrounding areas eg Cambusbarron and Fintry. Membership is open to all those over the age of 18 that believe in access for all.

Fallen trees can impede safe access for all users.

This means that in Scotland horse riders and carriage drivers enjoy a right of responsible access on most paths and tracks, across hills, mountains, moorland and farmland, along beaches and through forests and farmland, providing they exercise their rights responsibly. There are 35,499 horses in Scotland and historically equine access interests have been under represented with many Core Paths being littered with stiles and kissing gates. These stiles not only restrict access to horse riders and carriage drivers but also impact cyclists, pedestrians with mobility issues and families with pushchairs.

Scotland’s countryside has so much to offer to all responsible users.

We want to make friends with fellow horsey people and improve local access for those who want to hack out in our area The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 fundamentally altered the legal basis for outdoor access in Scotland, confirming a right of responsible access for nonmotorised users to most land, day or night, provided rights are exercised responsibly.

Working with landowners and other access groups we identify new routes to be made accessible for all.

Membership costs as little as £20 and benefits include: • • • • • • • • •

Kissing gates make routes accessible for only able bodied walkers, all other users are excluded including cyclists, mobility scooters and wheel chairs, horses and pushchairs.

Learn about the paths in the local area Identify new routes and be one of the first to ride them Reduced entry fee for Ride Outs and Demonstrations Take part in path clearance events Free RADAR key that unlocks kissing gates Regular member meetings 30% off first year of BHS membership Take part in UK wide Ride Out UK Month And most importantly make friends and benefit from the support group of fellow equine access enthusiasts
