A Star is Born in... Drymen

B

ecki Rutherford is a young independent singer- songwriter currently based in Edinburgh but born and raised in Drymen. Becki left home at 16 to pursue her dream and study music at Edinburgh Napier University, she is currently in her third year of their ‘Popular Music BA/hons’ course. Her debut single ‘Afterthought’ was announced for pre-sale on the 15th of February with the official release available on the 21st of February on all major streaming platforms. The song was independently recorded in uni facility recording studios and co-produced at home with university friend, Ryan Bradley. Lyrically the song is very raw and honest, describing the frustration and loneliness of not being treated as a priority. The composition and production of the track was built around this with it’s ambient production, warm yet strong vocal and catchy chorus. Becki’s vocal and song writing style has been compared to that of Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Griff with her honest and vulnerable approach to song writing accompanied with a unique pop vocal.

As an anxious youngster Becki first gained her confidence at age 12 after auditioning for UK theatre school in Glasgow and there discovered her passion for performing, where professional teachers helped her discover and nurture her singing talents. Becki later went on to explore song writing by teaching herself how to play guitar and sing, finding this a cathartic hobby, and thus leading her to apply to study music full time and pursue it as a career. If this song or myself and my story interest you and you would like to know more, don't hesitate to contact me. I have added my contact information below as well as download and listen links for the track and images that are more than welcome to be used for press and radio play.

Becki has always been interested in performance from a young age and was constantly taking part in extracurricular activities at school and even helping organise events for the arts department.

Park Life - Gardening Tips MAY

JUNE

Summer's on its way...

Summer arrives...

As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It's also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.

June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

• Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants • Earth up potatoes, & promptly plant any still remaining • Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (except in cold areas) • Water early & late to get the most out of your water, recycle water when possible • Regularly hoe off weeds

• Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds • Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas • Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes • Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads & early potatoes • Position summer hanging baskets & containers outside

• Open greenhouse vents & doors on warm days

• Mow lawns at least once a week

• Mow lawns weekly

• Plant out summer bedding

• Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges

• Stake tall or floppy plants

• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils & other spring-flowering bulbs

• Prune many spring-flowering shrubs

New Distillery for Stirlingshire

Bert & Claudia

Meanwhile, husband to be Bert was born in Italy.

Bert and Claudia are on a mission to build a new distillery in Stirlingshire. The couple recently relocated to Kippen, having moved their family home to Scotland. For Claudia, it’s a homecoming as she was born in Scotland, with her family moving to Italy soon after she was born.

24 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

The couple brings with them a shared passion and experience of the drinks business. Claudia has worked in wineries for many years, whilst Bert grew up working with his parents and grandparents on a family vineyard. Together Bert and Claudia created Upperhand Gin, a premium gin perfected by their secret recipe. The simple and distinctive taste comes in part from the botanicals, which are mostly sourced from along the Mediterranean.

Scotland’s people and its beautiful landscapes attracted Claudia and Bert as the place to live and to create their ultimate vision of a distillery for Lafferty Limited, their growing drinks business. Currently, Upperhand Gin is being distilled in Ireland, but as Bert explains they ambition is for that to happen in Scotland. “We want to build a carbon-neutral building to be the distillery for Upperhand and our other gin brands Lafferty Gin and Och Aye. We were drawn to this part of Scotland and believe that this is the perfect location

for us to build an environmentally friendly distillery. We will grow herbs in its grounds for use in our gin brands and also eventually distil whisky in the facility.” The couple are currently running a crowdfunding campaign which as Claudia explains is not just about raising capital for the building project. “We want local people to join us on this exciting journey, creating not just a working distillery, but a visitor attraction and a place for local people to work. We deliberately chose Stirlingshire to be the location of our distillery and hope that we can quickly make that dream a reality.” Good luck to Bert and Claudia with their Crowdfunding campaign, we hope to see their vision for a new distillery happen in the Park Life area. In the meantime, you can purchase Upperhand Gin at their website www. upperhandgin.com, but one lucky reader is going to win a bottle for free in a special Park Life Magazine competition.

Four Fresh Su Tomato, goat’s curd and basil salad with raspberry vinegar dressing

Barbecued bavette steak and tomato salad

Ingredients

Ingredients

• 75g raspberries

• 500g mixed heritage tomatoes

• 100ml white balsamic vinegar

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 600g mixed tomatoes

• 500g bavette steak

• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 2 red onions, cut into thick slices

• ½ small bunch basil, leaves picked and any larger ones torn

• 200g jar grilled artichokes in oil, drained

• 200g goat’s curd or soft mild goat’s cheese, broken into large chunks

• 150g feta, crumbled

• 10g shelled unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped, to serve

For the dressing • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp onion seeds • 3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced

For the dressing • 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 4 tbsp raspberry vinegar (see step 1 of the method) Method

• ½ bunch chives, roughly snipped

STEP 1 Put the raspberries and vinegar in a food processor and blitz until smooth. Push the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, discarding any seeds. Cover and transfer to the fridge until ready to use (the raspberry vinegar is best eaten fresh, but will keep in the fridge for a few days).

Method

STEP 2 Cut the tomatoes into wedges and arrange over a large serving platter. Make the dressing by whisking the ingredients together in a small bowl and seasoning to taste.

STEP 2 Heat a barbecue or griddle pan to high and season the steak well. Cook for 2-3 mins on each side until charred but rare in the middle, then transfer to a warm plate to rest. Drizzle the remaining oil over the onions and grill until charred. Separate into rings and set aside.

STEP 3 Season the tomatoes, then toss through the olive oil. Scatter over the basil leaves and goat’s curd. Season with freshly ground black pepper, then spoon over the dressing. Scatter over the pistachios just before serving.

26 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

STEP 1 Make the dressing by whisking the vinegar, oil, onion seeds and spring onions together, then set aside. Slice the tomatoes, then arrange over a large serving platter and lightly season with salt. Drizzle over most of the oil and set aside.

STEP 3 Slice the steak and arrange the tomatoes over it. Drizzle with any resting juices. Scatter over the artichokes and charred onions, then the feta and chives. To serve, drizzle over the dressing.

£6500 for our Grow Garden at Killearn, which was match funded by Central Scotland Green Network 'Growing Food Together' fund (who gave us half of the £25,000 set up costs). We are still taking donations at the Village Hub shop in Drymen if you missed out! Something deliciously different in Balmaha

T

he Perch at Balmaha opens its doors this May to provide locals and visitors with a new destination for brunch, lunch and a blether.

The Perch at Balmaha is a new offering from the family run Loch Lomond Waterfront Lodges. It’s the vision of daughter Chloe who moved back to Buchanan last year to take on the management of the business. With a farmhouse style rustic feel the Perch provides a range of brunch and lunch dishes and of course, a selection of indulgent home baking. The Perch aims to provide a relaxed atmosphere for friends and family to gather round the ‘kitchen’ table, share great food, have a blether and enjoy the drop-dead gorgeous surroundings of Loch Lomond. There will of course be special offers for anyone that ‘perches’ locally and the team can’t wait to welcome some familiar faces through the door. “I wanted to provide that ‘home’ style feel and serve rustic, seasonal food that’s made with love” says Chloe. She goes on to say “The dishes on the menu come from the heart. Whether it’s my Granny’s Lemon Cake (which I proudly won a rosette for at the Buchanan Flower Show back in the 1990s!), Sunshine Spanish Eggs which my partner Paul enjoyed each morning when he lived in Spain or the Pickled Ploughman and its homemade pork pie which is a nod back to where my parents met in Melton Mowbray. Even the scrambled eggs & toasted sourdough have a story to them! We love using the resources around us and being as natural as possible. Our Wild Things is made with seasonal mushrooms and wild garlic & leeks foraged right here at the Waterfront.” The name Perch was inspired by the days during the first lockdown spent watching the resident Ospreys dive into the loch and fly away to their perch with the catch in their talons. It’s one of a number of developments taking place at the site as the business transitions under Chloe’s management.

During lockdown the team has been busy planning for the future. Part of the existing building has been transformed into the Perch while the main function room remains and will host small intimate weddings and private parties such as baby showers, birthdays and family get togethers. The Waterfront is also set to expand its accommodation offering.

With all these developments, a bigger team is clearly required and is set to bring more permanent and seasonal jobs to the area. As well as Kitchen and front of house roles the business is also looking for new people to join the housekeeping team. It’s a small close team at the Waterfront with a range of roles to suit all ages. It’s been a challenging year all round for Scotland, particularly areas like Loch Lomond that are so reliant on tourism, but the Waterfront team are excited about the future as they transition out of the upheaval that Coronavirus has brought.

running the west highland way for samh

H

i everyone my name is James Semple and on Saturday the 1st of May I’ll be running the West Highland Way (96 miles) in one go, on behalf of the Scottish Association for Mental Health. It’s a subject that is very close to my heart, having endured several years of mental illness. It’s something that surprises a few people as from the outside they see me as quite a bubbly, energetic, confident person who always has a smile on his face. But really in the inside it’s a lot different from that. There has been a build of situations or scenarios where I can feel useless not worthy or a failure, I feel overwhelmed by this and the way I like to describe it is like a big dark cloud just overtakes me and the only thing I can see is darkness.

This has led me to being in quite a difficult headspace, last summer being one of them, where the wait to go see someone was a year long wait! It made me frustrated as this wait could literally be life and death for some people. So I had an idea of setting myself a challenge to help raise awareness of mental health and raise money for SAMH. This is where the idea of running the West Highland Way came around. It started off as quite a simple concept but through time it became more apparent that the challenge was more than just a run. It gave me a feeling of self worth and purpose, which through combining the run and the sharing of my story I wanted to push myself physically and mentally in the hope to help others. That’s what has driven me.

My training started in December and it definitely hasn’t been easy, each week I was running four times, no matter what the weather conditions were. The highlight of this was when I had to run 34 miles in torrential rain and 40mph winds. Least to say this wasn’t too enjoyable. However bad the conditions, I came to realise how running has given me great pleasure. I find it as a release from day to day life. It’s something that I’ve become passionate about as the feeling I get from after a run is amazing, it allows me to clear my head and reset.

Oh Happy Dad! Father's Day June 20th 2021

S

ummer will be here before you know it, and along with it, a pretty important date for all the dads out there. You guessed it: We're talking about Father's Day. Although most sons and daughters don't need a specific date to celebrate the most important man in their life, every dad in the country does get his special day on the calendar. This year's celebrations might look a little different with everything that's going on in the world, but you should still take the time to commemorate the day, even if it's with some virtual Father's Day ideas. If you're not able to dine together, maybe you can surprise him with a porch drop-off of his favorite Father's Day brunch recipes or even surprise him with a mail-order meat delivery so he can grill up his favorite meal. It was never meant to be this way, but the annual holiday can surprisingly come with a considerable amount of stress when you're supposed to find the perfect Father's Day gift for the guy who insists he doesn't need anything. (And let's be honest, sometimes a Father's Day card alone just doesn't cut it.)

34 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

IS FATHER'S DAY ON THE SAME DATE EVERY YEAR?

Don't feel bad if this date is news to you; the celebration changes days year-to-year. If you ever forget, just remember that Father's Day always falls on the third Sunday in June, and then check the calendar accordingly.

The Loch Ard Gallery Throwdown in the heart of the National Park

T

he pandemic has provided communities and businesses throughout the National Park to innovate and adapt their business models. This has opened a new opportunity to sell my pottery. My son Andrew is the inspiration, creative mind, and photographer behind The Loch Ard Gallery's launch. This is an online space where I can sell my work and, in time, support local artists in the community to grow their businesses. Pottery was an unexpected and happy discovery when I started an apprenticeship in The Drymen Pottery in 1980.

36 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Under the excellent tuition of Shirley Bracewell, I learnt all the fundamentals of making pots. I enjoyed the creativity and making things with my hands. Two years later, I had the privileged opportunity to travel to Japan where I spent six months as an apprentice in the pottery of the renowned potter Kyosuke Fujiwara. This was a very formative time and still influences my pottery today. I continued my pottery with moves between Scotland and America and bringing up four children. Now permanently settled in the heart of the National Park on the banks of Loch Ard, I am working in my much loved rustic pottery

shed. This tranquil place gives me peace and energy to enjoy my work. I make domestic ware which I fire in a gas kiln which gives rich colours and makes unglazed exteriors look "toasted". It is always exciting to open the kiln after a long 16 hour day of monitoring the temperature that rises above 1230 degrees centigrade. Each firing is a lesson for the next time. I keep to a small number of glazes and have enjoyed exploring the effects as they overlap. After a certain amount of trial and error, I have discovered what works well and ones never to try again.

As I also teach Pilates virtually, I plan on two glaze firings this year. The first will be ready for spring, the second in time for Christmas. At present, I am decorating pieces for the

upcoming firing. I have a few commissions and some breakfast sets of two bowls, mugs and plates. As spring is here with summer not far behind, there is a selection of vases for the garden flowers

and bowls to fill with summer salads and fruit. The greatest pleasure is knowing that the pottery I make is used and enjoyed. As a family, we use my pottery every day.

The return of the Ospreys I

t’s fair to say the lighter evenings and the days of spring sunshine have lifted all our spirits after a tough start to the new year. There’s something about watching shoots appearing on the ground, buds on trees and hearing that first buzzing bumblebee that calms and soothes us all. The woodland floor at RSPB Loch Lomond is already looking lush as the green leaves of the bluebells make their way through the ground as we patiently wait for their spectacular show in May. The ospreys have also returned to the area! We’ve already had reports of up to five in the sky at the one time. One pretty special encounter saw an osprey soar right over the reserve carrying a fish. One of our volunteers David McCulloch managed to get this fantastic photo of it! We’ve been busy planning an events programme that will be different to previous years, but still the great mix of nature loving activities, in a COVID safe way. We don’t have

38 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

exact dates for when we will start our family activities, but if restrictions allow, we are hoping to be doing all the things our visitors love, like bug hunting and pond dipping, throughout the summer. We’ve also been working in partnership with Artist-Researcher Hannah Imlach on a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The artwork Moth Kota will take the form of a sculpture and be temporarily situated on the reserve. The sculpture will create a fully immersive gathering space and takes its inspiration from moth traps and traditional pyramidal shelters such as the Finnish Kota or Goahti (Northern Sámi). In June/July we will be hosting night-time events and inviting people to engage with the sculpture where they will have ‘a close encounter’ with the moths of RSPB Loch Lomond. You’ll find the most up-to date information about all our activities on our website www.rspb.org.uk/lochlomond

och Lomond Steamship Company is delighted to announce the award of £94,108 from Historic Environment Scotland for the repair and replacement of the Balloch Steam slipway and carriage.

remain to be assembled by our volunteer crew. The repairs to the slipway and carriage will facilitate the slipping of the Maid of the Loch Paddle Steamer which will allow essential repairs and restoration work to be carried out on the vessel. Anne Urquhart, Volunteer Director at Loch Lomond Steamship Company, said: “Two years on from the unfortunate incident with the Maid of the Loch’s old slipway carriage Loch Lomond Steamship Company is close to completing a new much stronger replacement.

The steam-powered slipway is the only one surviving and operational in Europe, and the project will retain as much of the historic fabric as possible. Bogies have been salvaged from the original carriage along with large horizontal spars and all will form part of the new carriage. Unit A with the tow hitch is now complete and compared with the old hitch shows just how much more robust this new arrangement will be. Four more larger sections

40 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

That is thanks to this generous grant from Historic Environment Scotland. The Winch House and Slipway is a Category A listed

structure and is the only slipway still in steam in Europe so it is truly unique and its preservation is essential. To know that Historic Environment Scotland has the confidence in us as a volunteer led charity to complete such a complicated task is both humbling and very reassuring. Our Heritage Engineer, Jim Mitchell, has been our champion in leading the project and we’re extremely grateful for all his efforts to first secure the funds and then to organise the work of a small band of dedicated volunteers to salvage useful material from the old carriage and assemble its replacement.

Time to get back out on the water...

S

pring is a busy time of year on any farm. There’s the work involved in rolling the fields so they are smooth for harvest time, spreading slurry to give them that much needed energy boost and of course the beginning of calving. On Portnellan Farm we have around 40 cows due to calve between the start of April and the end of June. It certainly keeps you on your toes and often means late nights and early mornings checking the cow shed and moving any looking immanent out to the small paddock next to the steading where we can keep a close eye on them.

42 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

If that wasn’t enough April is the start of the boating season and with over 20 moorings to look after there’s plenty to do preparing them before we start putting boats back in the water. As the government began to ease restrictions at the start of April we were also able to reopen our kayak & stand-up paddleboard hire for locals. It’s been wonderful to see people making the most of the good spell of weather to get out on the water and lovely to meet more of the local community, many of whom didn’t know Portnellan existed before now! Unfortunately restrictions prevent us from resuming our Loch

Lomond Speedboat Tours until the 26th of April but its great to finally have a date to aim for and I look forward to getting more people out on the water to explore our beautiful loch at the end of the month. Anyone in need of a holiday will also know that the 26th is also the date that holiday accommodation can reopen. Although lockdown hasn’t been much fun for anyone in the hospitality sector it has been the ideal time to get on with any repairs and renovations needing done so both our cottage and glamping will be ship shape and ready to go in a couple weeks time.

Walk from Milngavie to Drymen along the West Highland Way In this edition, we’re covering the 12 mile (20km) stretch of the West Highland Way long-distance walking route, from Milngavie to Drymen.

T

his is the very pleasant typical first-day itinerary for walkers of the full 96-mile trail. The mainly gentle paths help to ease walkers into their rhythm, ahead of the steeper hills that await them after Drymen when they enter into the Highlands. Of course, you don't have to walk all of the 12 mile route described here, as it is very easy to enjoy much shorter sections. Join or leave the path at Mugdock Park, Carbeth, Dumgone or Killearn Mill. Last year the West Highland Way celebrated its 40th anniversary. Now firmly established as one of Scotland’s most famous and loved national walking trail the route started initially without much fanfare at Milngavie. Now as a testament of its huge popularity you cannot miss that this is where the trail begins. Walking into the town centre from the train station car park you will pass many signs, displays, storyboards, art pieces, banners for the West Highland Way, all ideal Instagram content for walkers wishing to share the start of their adventure.

The stone obelisk on Douglas Street marks the official start of the West Highland Way. Close by there is metal artwork, cut out to feature some of the many landmarks and milestones along the route. A more recent and practical addition is a free Scottish Water top-up tap. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

| 53

The route is well signed, not just as you leave Milngavie but along the entire 96-mile trail to Fort William. People come from all over the world to walk it, if you've never walked it then at least do a section such as this one, if only to see what all the fuss is about! The path initially runs alongside Allander Water, into Mugdock Country Park, through the woodlands. On the spring day that we walked it, there would normally be lots of walkers setting off, ready to spend anything up to a week on the journey north. Sadly, with the restrictions, there weren’t the usual walkers, but locals were out in force dog walking, jogging and cycling. Around 5 miles into the walk is Carbeth Loch, with its community of wooden huts. Hutting here dates back around 100 years, becoming very popular just before the Second World War.

As the path widens out at Strath Blane you get good views of Dumgoyne, with Ben Lomond visible in the distance. The West Highland Way route picks up and follows the old Blane Valley Railway line, there is a footpath to cross over to Glengoyne Distillery and Dumgoyne.

54 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

At the Beech Tree Inn, you will find a place to stop and pick up some food, its welcome sign works hard to tempt walkers along the West Highland Way to call in. A little further along the route at Killearn Mill is the very popular Turnip the Beet serving deli meals, snacks and drinks.

If you take this route you can walk up Stirling Road into Drymen. Alternatively, if you stay on the lane, you cross the bypass and continue along Gartness Road to take you into the village. For many West Highland Way walkers Drymen is their first night stop, with some excellent places to stay and enjoy a night in the village. Not only is this one of the easiest sections of the West Highland Way it is the one where you can easily access different parts of it for shorter walks. See if walking these 12 miles give you the urge to plan a full walk along the West Highland Way.

At Gartness there is an honesty shop if you need ice cream to get you through the last section to Drymen. The last few miles go up and down a quiet lane, look out for a path signed with a West Highland way marker that leads to a field, this brings you out close to the Old School House in Drymen. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Bringing history to life OPENING SOON... THE KILLEARN HERITAGE TRAIL

The Buchanan Monument and The Square

E

ight information boards will guide you round the historic features of the village and a dynamic, new website will provide lots more information. We are lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of the world with a series of picturesque villages. The origins of Killearn date back hundreds of years but how much do most of us know of its heritage? We enjoy a wonderful environment – but which landscapes are natural, and which were ‘managed’ over the centuries?

Launching in May this year, the KILLEARN HERITAGE TRAIL will feature • Eight, beautifully designed information boards illustrating the highlights of the village • A 2km, wheelchair-accessible, guided route around the village: for residents and visitors alike • Information on Killearn’s most historic buildings; and tales of some of its leading characters • A new website detailing the Trail; with pages covering many aspects of local history, our built and natural environment

The website will include • the Trail map and boards • Heritage Trail Quiz for Kids • Further fascinating information on ancient buildings and landmarks • Maps showing Killearn’s development through the centuries • A gallery of intriguing archive photographs • Suggested paths for walking / running / cycling • Documents, features and links on local history

The Trail is the culmination of a three-year community project that began with the excavation of a medieval site in Killearn Glen and continued with the research, design and commissioning of the boards and website. The Trail will be launched on Thursday 20th May by pupils from Killearn Primary School and will be open to the public from thereon.

Visit the website at www.killearnheritage.org.uk from 15 May. Join with your friends and family...come and enjoy a walk round Killearn. The Killearn Heritage Trail project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Killearn Courier. www.parklifescotland.co.uk
