Virtual Village Market a resounding success!

T

hank you to everyone who shopped our Christmas market, to those of you who liked and shared our Facebook posts and helped us spread the word. Together with our stall holders we managed to raise over £1,500 for mental health charities. Without your support none of this would have been possible.

You purchased lots of lovely gifts from our amazing local businesses, artists, artisans and crafters. You shopped local in your droves and for that we are eternally grateful. For every purchase you make from a local business they do a happy dance round their kitchen. From the 4th - 18th December 2020 there was a lot of dancing going on and that was all thanks to you. Our next market will take place from 26th March - 4th April. It will be an Easter Market with amazing stall holders, gifts galore and fun for the kids. We'll also be spreading some love and kindness throughout our communities. If you'd like to get involved as a stall holder just visit our website and join us and if you're coming along for a browse round the market we look forward to welcoming you though the doors! The Virtual Village Easter Market will open at 6pm on Friday 26th March 2021.

SPRING Gardening

TIPS FROM

S

pring is just around the corner and we’ve asked local ground care and garden equipment company Fraser C Robb for some seasonal gardening tips.

protect new spring shoots from slugs

Slugs need lots of moisture and can seek it from plants, usually under the cover of darkness. As always prevention is better than cure, so water plants in the morning as there will be less moisture by the time night comes. Slug barriers, in the form of items such as broken slate and copper tape, can help.

top dress containers with fresh compost A fresh layer will provide plants with the organic matter that they need to grow best.

plant in prepared soil, onion sets & early potatoes

Plant onion sets 5-10cm apart in rows of 2530cm, ideally between mid-March and midApril. To protect them from birds, cover with fleece until the roots are established. Early potatoes

buchlyvie wildlife garden Jessica Langford

B

uchlyvie Wildlife Garden is a little known gem, hidden away in the grounds behind Buchlyvie Primary School and Health Centre. It has open access with a footpath linking the Village Hall, multicourt, playground and football pitch. There is colour throughout the year: snowdrops and aconites in early spring, cowslips and fritillaries in March, bluebells in May, the wildflower meadow all summer and in autumn, hedgerows glowing with rosehips, haws, brambles and spindle berries. The huge variety of plants attract a rich diversity of insects and birds. In summer, the meadow is a buzz of bees and butterflies. There is always something to see.

The Wildlife Garden started in 2006 when I was inspired by a small leaflet in Stirling Library, ‘BBC Breathing Places, apply for a grant to create a Community Wildlife Garden’. My daughter had just started at the Primary School, so I discussed the idea with the then head teacher Mrs McGuigan. She was excited by the creative potential of outdoor learning and we applied for the grant of £10,000. To our astonishment we were successful! We soon discovered that Buchlyvie has a wealth of people who are botanists, foresters and experienced gardeners. With their support, during the next 5 years, teachers, parents and children worked together and created a variety of wildlife habitats: a large pond, wildflower meadow, native woodland, an orchard, a kilometre of native hedging and a beautiful circular dry stone medicinal herb garden inspired by Buchlyvie Broch. The ‘broch’ was built by Buchlyvie’s master dyker Irwin Campbell with 25 dykers from all over Scotland during the midsummer weekend 2008.

In the process of creating these habitats, the children learnt about plants and ecology and did a variety of projects ranging from calculating the age of a tree (without cutting it down), building bird boxes, seed collecting and pond dipping. We also hired a bus and took the whole school to

18 |

Primroses & snakeshead fritillaries

‘Barbadoes’ to dig up terracotta clay! They made tiles of their hands and footprints for a tree mosaic on the front of the Health Centre. The children also made ‘Hedgerow Tales’, a 5 minute film which they animated with hedgerow animals made out of autumn leaves and seed heads which won several awards. You can see it at: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=eCnrQuwilxs

Meadow with Knapweed, Scabious & Meadow Sweet

These days the Wildlife Garden is looked after by a small group of Buchlyvie volunteers, doing weekly weeding, planting and maintenance. During the last year of Covid restrictions we have found it a great help to meet up, (plenty of space for social distancing and chatting) work together and share experiences.

burn green meadow We are planting a new wildflower meadow on the Burn Green, just off Main Street. Access is by a footpath by the burn, opposite the ‘Tavern’. Burn Green used to be the Village Drying Green, before tumble dryers were invented! Many thanks to Buchlyvie DSMcG Landscaping for preparing the ground, we will sow a ‘bee and butterfly’ wildflower mix in April. The meadow will take a couple of years to establish, but by summer 2023 it should be buzzing!

2020 saw Scotia Contracts celebrating 20 years in business.

I

nitially slowing down in early lockdown we soon saw a surge in demand for customers looking to stay at home and invest in their own properties making the most of the space they had.

“it’s great to work with customers at such an early stage as we can help guide them on planning their final landscaping early in the project. From drives and pathways, bridges & ponds to flower and vegetable beds we can help in the design process”

From main extensions, garden rooms, gyms & home offices conversions, we have worked with our customers to realise their dreams and ideas, with perfectly planned landscaping finishing off the desired look.

Due to the changes in climate in the last decade, Scotland has seen a huge increase in rainwater volumes which has led to large scale flooding and damage to gardens, grounds and properties. There has also been growth in large scale groundworks services and we now work with architects and house kit suppliers preparing the ground & pipework for larger projects and house builds.

We have therefore experienced a rapid increase in customers needing support in this area and we offer ditch and field clearing and drainage works (new and replacements) to help minimise the damage along with maintenance programs to help keep fields and burns clear of debris. Whatever your project or ideas, we would love to come and discuss them with you so feel free to give me a call on 07818 002 770 www.scotiacontracts.co.uk Kenny Stewart www.parklifescotland.co.uk

M

other's Day, is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. it is exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday and usually falls in the second half of March or the beginning of April. Mothering Sunday is a wonderful celebration of motherhood when we make this special day all about our mums! This year will be a little different as we won’t be able to visit but a gift or card in the post will brighten up the day of someone dear to you.

Colour Your Mood

jewel colours

by Holly Nairn

W

e all know that gardening is good for us and with spring approaching, we can feel a renewed optimism in the air. During Lockdown many people found solace in their gardens, turning to nature to help with anxiety. We now appreciate the concept of mindfulness - practicing the small things that soothe and bring us peace – feeding the birds, sowing seeds with the hopeful anticipation of good things to eat, watching buds unfurling and spring bulbs opening their petals to the sunshine. During 2020 I was aware that many clients were asking me for the same thing: colour. Bright, bright colour and lots of it. Without the promise of a holiday abroad, we were looking to our gardens to bring us the feeling of an exotic holiday, colourful cocktails of rainbow happiness in the shape of flowers. I love designing these joyous planting plans and multi-coloured mood boards that dazzle, delivering shots of fiery hues from spring to winter. If you are looking for a scheme to make your pulse race and bring a grin to your face, then go for hot colours; red, orange, yellow and intense jewel like colours. Use narcissi, tulips, dahlias, daylillies, potentillas, roses and rudbeckia, then contrast with blues and purples – alliums, lupins, delphiniums, anchusa, penstemons. Geums are great for bringing a zing for months on end in oranges and yellows.

Jewel colours

For tranquility, a white and green garden is hard to beat. At nightime, white stands out in the moonlight, creating an ethereal effect. Pastel shades of blue, pink and mauve, combined with white and silver give a little more interest but the same sense of calm. Add some black plants and the drama deepens but the mood remains subdued. We react to colour more than we realise, like a favourite song, it can lift our mood or bring us calm and there’s so much fun to be had in colouring our gardens to suit our mood.

RSPB Loch Lomond plans ahead

D

espite a challenging year, everyone at RSPB Loch Lomond is feeling optimistic about the future, with some exciting plans to look forward to in 2021! Last spring we were granted planning permission for our path project, which will create a link between the car park and the loch shore. This plan was delayed by the pandemic, but we are currently seeking funding to allow it to go ahead soon. We are also exploring options for the creation of a new area of wetland on the reserve. This would benefit the internationally important population of Greenland whitefronted geese, as well as breeding waders such as lapwing and snipe, invertebrates and amphibians.

Our fen restoration work is continuing and last year we managed to remove just under 2ha of non-native Osier willow from its encroachment onto the nationally important fen habitat. By removing these barriers we are creating a larger, more joined up area of wetland that will support species such as spotted crake, grasshopper warbler and reed bunting, as well as a breeding waders which don’t like being enclosed by trees such as lapwing. Using funding from the EU LIFE project we have recently acquired high-quality equipment and machinery that will allow us to access the wetter areas of the site. This will enable us to provide high-quality feeding habitat for Greenland white-fronted geese as well as a more diverse vegetation structure that is preferred by waders such as redshank and snipe. And lastly, Hannah Imlach, a student currently completing her Arts and Humanities PhD at RSPB Loch Lomond, is currently developing some exciting, wildlife focussed art pieces, and these will be on display at the reserve in the late summer and winter. If you would like any more information about the reserve please visit our website or contact Ash-Lynn Tavener at ashlynn.tavener@rspb.org.uk

HAVE FUN & FEED THE BIRDS! the recipe • ⅓ cup sunflower seeds. • ⅓ cup nyjer seeds. • ⅓ cup grated cheese. • ½ cup dried fruit, soaked overnight. • ½ cup unsalted peanuts. • 1 cup lard or beef suet. • Hanging bird feeder(s) suitable for fat balls.

method • Chop the nuts and fruit finely. • Stir into the rest of the dry ingredients until they’re all thoroughly combined. • Melt your suet or lard in a saucepan over a low heat. • Remove from the heat and stir in your dry ingredients a little at a time. • Divide the mixture into portions the size of your hanging bird feeder. Using your hands, mould into tightly packed balls just slightly smaller than the diameter allowed by the feeder. • Place on a tray covered with greaseproof paper. Once cooled, refrigerate overnight. Of course, as with all recipes, part of the fun is making your own adjustments. So be creative! As a general rule, one part fat to two parts dry ingredients is the ratio that will create the best consistency, but this will vary depending on the precise mixture you use. So, for example, a fruitier mixture is likely to be less dry. It’s therefore a good idea to keep a little extra seed on hand just in case. Likewise, when using a wholly nut and seed based dry mix, add it to the melted fat a little at a time until you reach the right consistency.

something to drink? While a well-made fat ball or bird cake will keep feathered visitors nourished throughout the winter months, a sumptuous feast isn’t the only thing that will have them visiting your garden. A source of fresh water is essential, and can be hard to find once a frost has set in. That’s not to say you need to rush out to purchase a heated bird bath, although they’ll certainly appreciate it. Instead, just making the effort to put water out regularly and to check it hasn’t frozen over can make a real difference. If it does freeze? Pour a cup of hot water over the surface once a day to help melt any ice. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

This is a crucial area for the long-term conservation of these iconic and much loved endangered animals.

conservation. We were delighted to be associated with Friends of Loch Lomond & Trossachs, as there is great synergy as we continue to ensure maintaining good environmental practices. Our green charter includes the planting of two trees for every one cut down and protection of ancient woodland that is on our farm.‘’

Thanks to projects supported by Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and others, the numbers of Red Squirrels are starting to increase, but more work needs to be done to ensure longer-term success. These funds will go towards a range of projects with local groups, including the installation of bird feeding boxes in the southern woodland areas of the Trossachs and nearby Gartmore.

James Fraser, Chair of Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs said: ‘‘This is a positive news story amid the continuing gloom associated with the impact of Covid 19 and we are grateful to the Duff family at Duff Christmas Tree Farm for stepping up to the plate so enthusiastically to support the conservation of red squirrels along the Highland edge in Scotland’s first National Park at this time.

Euan Duff of Duff Christmas Trees said: ‘’This year, despite Covid-19 we were able to safely maintain what for many is an important family tradition of choosing and cutting a Christmas Tree. We are delighted that the season was such a success and that so many people were able to participate.

Not only have they and their customers raised much needed funds, but they have also helped to raise awareness of the urgent need to strengthen conservation efforts to save Red Squirrels. These funds will be well used and should help with the purchase of bulk supplies of red squirrel feeder boxes and squirrel feed which we plan to deploy by working closely with local groups in and around the Trossachs.’’

christmas tree cash boost for red squirrel conservation in the trossachs

I

n the run up to last Christmas the Duff Christmas Tree Farm of Buchylvie partnered with the Friends of Loch Lomond & Trossachs conservation charity to support the fight to save Red Squirrels in the Trossachs which is a major battleground to prevent the drift north of the stronger and more dominant grey squirrels. The Christmas Tree Farm made a generous donation of almost £700 generated from a small levy on the sale of every tree sold as part of a very successful ‘cut your own Christmas Tree’ fundraising initiative, boosted with additional contributions from their customers. Visitors to the farm during December were greeted by Red Squirrel mascots, which helped raise awareness of the fundraising efforts. The Christmas Tree Farm is on the edge of the National Park and the Duff family volunteered their support to help protect and grow the population of Red Squirrels in the Trossachs.

Top Tips for Spring Gardens

1 2

Order summer-flowering bulbs and seeds. Flowers like lilies, gladioli and ranunculi are all good for early-spring planting. Tidy up flower beds and borders. Have a general tidy up, removing leaves and other debris from flower beds and borders. You can cut back the old dead growth of deciduous grasses and herbaceous perennials now, although, if you'd like to be wildlife friendly, it’s best to leave these until early spring. Clear borders and beds back to bare soil. Put the dead organic matter you’ve cleared away into your compost pile or bin to break down. Remove any weeds you can see and either

32 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

burn them or put them in your brown bin. Don’t compost them as the seeds will germinate and cause you more problems later on.

3

Clean out and wash your greenhouse. Now’s the perfect time to give your greenhouse a good clean, ready for the seedlings and cuttings of spring. Wash the outside of your greenhouse with disinfectant or detergent, to remove algae, moss and general grime. This will let in more light during the growing months, while removing potential homes for pests and disease. Make sure you disinfect the inside of the glass too - overwintering pests and disease can survive in the smallest nooks and crannies.

Sweep out any plant debris on the floor and benches, and wash with a hot solution of garden disinfectant such as Jeyes Fluid. While you're there, wash pots and seed trays to help prevent diseases like 'damping off' from infecting your young plants. Ventilate your greenhouse well so it dries thoroughly. Once your greenhouse is clean and shiny, take time to inspect the structure for any damage to glass or vents and replace any broken parts.

4

Hunt down and remove garden pests. Hunt down and remove hibernating pests now - it will save you a lot of trouble come spring and summer. Take a closer look at the crowns of your perennial plants

and check for any slugs, snails and aphid colonies sheltering for the winter. If you still haven't cleared last year's pots of summer bedding then do so now, checking for white-vine-weevil larvae, which live in the compost and feed on plant roots. Destroy any larvae that you find and be prepared to treat for vine weevils this year, using parasitic nematodes or chemical drenches.

5

Maintain fences, gates and trellis. Winter is the ideal time of year to get those niggly little maintenance jobs out of the way. Check fence panels, gates and trellis for any sign of weather damage or decay. Fixing any broken structures now will give you more time to spend in the garden during the spring and summer. Replace any broken segments or structures. Next, clean fence panels and

gates with a power washer to remove dirt, moss and mildew. Use a stiff brush to help remove stubborn grime. Let the wood dry completely before applying two coats of stain, paint or wood preservative on a dry day.

6

Clean and sharpen gardening tools. Give your tools a clean and a sharpen during the winter months. Maintaining your garden tools will help preserve them, saving you money in the long run and helping prevent the spread of disease. Dirty secateurs are notorious for introducing bacteria and fungi to fresh pruning wounds. Use strong detergent, hot water and a scourer to give bladed tools a thorough clean. Sharpening your tools will also improve their performance; they'll be easier to work with and will give cleaner pruning cuts. Once sharpened,

apply some oil or WD40 to blades and hinges. Hand tools, including spades, hoes, trowels and rakes will also benefit from a good clean and oiling.

7

Create a composting area. If you haven't already, now’s a great time to set up a compost area in your garden. This could be as simple as buying a ready-made compost bin or you could build your own using spare wood. A compost area provides somewhere to put all your organic waste. Once it has broken down, you'll get a lovely, rich compost your plants will thrive on. Make sure you have a good mixture of grass clippings, vegetable peelings, paper and woody prunings. And to help the process along you'll need to turn your compost with a garden fork each month to keep it aerated.

A walk to put a Spring in your step

primrose hill, loch katrine A

walk along the shores of Loch Katrine, before a hike into the forest, climbing to get outstanding views across to Ben Venue. Total time around 3 hours, 11km.

Start at Trossachs Pier, where there is a large car park. Follow the road that runs alongside Loch Katrine, passing the Steamship and other cruise boats on your left and eco-camp on the right. The lochside road is popular with cyclists and walkers, it goes all the way to Stronachlachar. You’ll notice several islands in the loch, these and the dramatic scenery were the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott’s 1810 poem ‘Lady of the Lake’, a blockbuster of the day and responsible for making Loch Katrine the birthplace of Scottish tourism.

After 2km a green waymarker post indicates a path to the right. Leave the tarmac road and follow the zig-zag path through the trees with a short, but steep climb. At the top turn left and follow a forest track, taking in the elevated views across the loch to Ben Venue.

36 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

As the path widens, you’ll get excellent views up the loch towards the Arrochar Alps in the distance. Don’t take the first track down, keep going until you get to a deer gate. From there follow the path down until you re-join the lochside road. It’s just over 4km back along the smooth road to return to the starting point at Trossachs Pier. Stop at Brenachoile Point, a grassy headland and ‘stand in the footsteps’ of the poets and artists whose vivid descriptions and paintings drew attention to the Trossachs. This is also one of the locations for the TV show Outlander.

The photographs shown are from several walks, across different seasons. The most recent of which was earlier this year when the trees were bare and the sky a deep blue, providing wide panoramic views. Autumn colours are stunning and during the summer you may even be lucky to see an Osprey flying over the loch. To make the walk easier and shorter simply walk to Brenachoile Point and back.

Going

LOCAL

W

e are all conscious now of living differently for all sorts of different reasons, to keep ourselves and our families safe, to support local businesses, to reduce our impact on the world, our carbon footprint and for our own health. It is great that we are all having conversations about these important issues and even better that as well as the consumers, businesses and producers are doing the same. Around this local area we are blessed with some fabulous local food producers, from farmers and growers to butchers and bakers, chefs, brewers, crafters and makers, Central Scotland is an exceedingly rich larder of home grown, home made fabulousness. By supporting these local businesses, we are not only

40 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

reducing our carbon footprint but often also reducing plastic usage, excessive packaging, and wastage. The other great benefit from buying local is that you can get to know the producer. If you want to understand the food that you eat, you can speak directly to the farmer or butcher or maker and ask everything you need to know to make a true and fair choice. As consumers we are bombarded with news headlines, social media, information, and misinformation that it can all seem quite overwhelming. But your local producer will always be able to tell you exactly where something has come from, how it has been produced or processed, how livestock have been cared for and what they are doing to do their part for the environment.

Britain has some of the highest welfare standards in the world and that is something to be proud of and to have confidence in when buying British as well as local. The most important thing that we can do as consumers, is to stop and look at what we are buying, understand where it has come from, make a conscious decision as to what you are eating and most importantly don’t waste any of it. Food is a precious resource to be savored and enjoyed. Knockraich is a traditional run dairy family farm just outside Fintry with a small herd of 60 British Friesian Cattle. The cattle are grazed outdoors for as long as the Scottish weather allows through Spring, Summer and Autumn and while cosy indoors over the winter

are fed a primarily grass based diet. Our cattle are all born and bred on our own farm which means that we can guarantee the provenance, health, and wellbeing of every cow as well as every litre of milk produced. The emphasis for us has always been on quality of milk rather than quantity and that can only be achieved with healthy, happy cows.

For a great range of other local producers why not try a local online food hub: www.neighbourfood.co.uk www.thegreatbritishfoodhub.com

Katy Rodger’s multi-award-winning Artisan Dairy is based on the farm and produces a range of natural dairy products using whole, non-homogenised milk direct from our herd. We believe simply in keeping good products natural and honest.

Katy Rodger’s full range of chilled products are 100% natural, free from any artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners, or preservatives. Milk can now be purchased direct from the farm. Simply buy a reusable glass bottle or bring your own container to the café and fill up from the milk station. No plastic, no fuss. In the past 12 months alone, we have saved around 10,000 plastic milk bottles from landfill. Also available from the farm Shop at The Courtyard Café are natural and fruit yogurts, crème fraiche, Knockraich Crowdie, butter, buttermilk, whey and ice cream. Portnellan Organic Farm diversification at its best

H

idden away on the southern shore of Loch Lomond, Portnellan Organic Farm is first and foremost a family farm and home to the Scott-Parks for almost 70 years. On Portnellan producing high quality organic beef and taking care of the environment go hand in hand. Being organic for over 20 years means that no chemical fertilisers or pesticides are used and the family actively encourage a variety of wildlife through hedge planting, woodland management and grazing cattle. The farms unique location on the banks of Loch Lomond have allowed for diversification in a number of

ways. Boating has always been a popular pass time on Loch Lomond and the farm now offers moorings and boat storage. More recently the family completely renovated the original house on the farm which was in danger of becoming completely derelict. The Old Farmhouse is now 4* Self-Catering and offers guests the chance to fully immerse themselves in nature and farm life. Although there is currently no farm shop on Portnellan guests and visitors can buy grass fed organic beef directly from the farm. For those who want to learn more about where their food comes you can book a Farm Tour & Afternoon Tea.

Parasite control for your Pet? Tick that off the list.

general protocol:

N

ow that Spring is almost upon us, it seems like a good time to review the benefits of parasite prevention in our dogs and cats.

some of the common culprits include; • Fleas - are wingless insects that feed on blood from their host and lay eggs which can then fall into the environment. Adult fleas usually last one to three weeks on a host. Their eggs are well protected from changes in the environment and can last for months. Therefore, for any flea infestation it is very important to treat not only the affected animal but also the environment (hot washing of any bedding, treating the home with a special spray). • Ticks - Ticks are an arachnid (yes, related to spiders) that spend a variable amount of time on their host from a couple of days to up to 2 weeks. They are also blood feeders but more importantly have the potential to transmit a number of bacterial and viral diseases transmitted through their saliva during a meal. Quick removal of a tick when found is important, we prefer to use a tick removal device for this, twisting in an anticlockwise direction.

• Treat all animals as directed with a product active against fleas and ticks. There are many options; including spot on, tablets or collars. • Treat all puppies and kittens for worms monthly until the age of 6 months, then every 3 months for life. This usually involves a tablet, but there are liquid and powder forms should this be a problem. • Pregnant animals and very young puppies/kittens will require a different protocol, and advise should be sought from your Vet for their individual needs. • It is best to get your preventative healthcare from your own Vets as the products we stock prove more effective and have been more vigorously tested than over the counter products purchased elsewhere. • Never use a dog product on a cat, or cat product on a dog as this can have serious health complications due to different ingredients. • Jackson Vets have a Pet Health Plan in place so you can get all your routine Flea, tick and wormers, annual vaccinations along with various other products all broken down into monthly instalments. Contact our reception team if you would like more details.

See our advert opposite for details of The Pet Health Club.

• Worms - Many worms which can affect our Pets have a potential to threaten human health also. They come in many shapes and sizes and tend to cause clinical signs such as poor growth and diarrhoea, although infection can also be without symptoms; allowing continued contamination of the environment. Puppies and kittens are generally most at risk and so we recommend an increased frequency of treatment until they are 6 months of age. Dogs and Cats can pick up parasites by a number of methods; interacting with other animals, hunting or even unknowingly brought in on our own shoes and clothes are all potential sources. Along with observing good hand hygiene and picking up any waste as soon as possible, we at Struthers and Scott advocate preventative healthcare. This means regularly deworming and giving treatments for fleas and ticks. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

covid-19 support update for 2021 S ince the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic our local community has come together to offer support to our most vulnerable residents. It has been a very difficult and challenging year for all of us, and we are so proud of the resilience amongst the villages. To date, we have delivered food and essentials over 1000 times across the local area and have donated over 70 Kindness Food Parcels to families in need. All foodbank donations go to local families living within the Drymen, Croftamie & Buchanan boundary. We want to make sure we are reaching everyone who needs support. With this in mind, we plan to set up a designated area at the side of the village hall for people to come and help themselves to food & essentials whilst remaining anonymous. Keep an eye on the support group Facebook page “Covid-19 Supporting the Vulnerable in Drymen” for more information. The DCB Covid-19 Support Group continues to deliver shopping to your door, provide emotional support and deliver kindness parcels of food and essentials. We are very grateful to have fantastic volunteers, all willing to help with different jobs from deliveries, phone calls, accounts, admin and much more! It is heartwarming to see the community pulling together at this uncertain time. We buy fresh food to supplement all of the kindness parcels to ensure the parcels are nutritious and therefore donations via the GoFundMe page are very welcome. Fraser Robb of Drymen Community Council, as a constituted group, receives the GoFundMe donations on a monthly basis, and in turn release the cash to the Support Group. Support Group members are: Laura Gordon, Dawn Conner, Amanda MacLeod, Louise Macfarlane and Amanda Reid.

We also accept food & toiletry donations. You can leave non-perishable foodbank donations at the But & Ben in Croftamie, the Spar or in the Village Hall (keep an eye out for advertised times). If you need any help, would like to talk to someone or are in need of a Kindness Parcel please call or text Amanda Reid on 07811633968. If you wish to donate and cannot use the GoFundMe link please contact Louise Macfarlane - 07791399542 and one of our volunteers will call you so we can arrange a door stop collection. Calls to both Amanda and Louise are kept in complete confidence.

The following are testimonials from people who receive kindness food parcels from the Support Group: “I am a self-employed man and have always managed for myself but COVID has hit my business hard. I found it difficult asking for help but I just could not afford to buy shopping after paying my household and business bills. My friend asked the group to help me with kindness packs, I was embarrassed but now I am so grateful. Thanks so much to all involved and thank you Amanda for being so confidential, it wasn’t easy to admit I needed help.” “When I first heard about the kindness parcels, I was hesitant to accept help despite needing it but I can only say, that the whole experience has been one of overwhelming genuine kindness and support and always carried out in complete confidence. I now have no idea what I was so worried about. The community support group has been an outstretched hand in uncertain times.” Thank you for your support and stay safe. The Trossachs Trail in Focus

The birthplace of tourism in Scotland The ambitious project is being led by the Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust, in partnership with conservation charity Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and Forestry & Land Scotland, supported by local community groups, The National Park, Scotland Loves Local, Stirling Council and Scottish Water.

F

ollowing a massive influx of visitors to the Trossachs last year and an anticipated repeat this year, due to Covid 19 and overseas travel restrictions, a new £600,000 initiative is underway to improve visitor management in the Trossachs with a refresh of the 40 mile Trossachs Trail signage and car park expansion at visitor honeypots in the heart of the area.

54 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

A new website for ‘The Trossachs Trail’ has just launched, providing a comprehensive planning guide for visiting the Trossachs with links to local websites. The award-winning Trail was first developed almost thirty years ago and was the first official geographic tourist trail in Scotland. It was based on the famous Trossachs Tour popularised by Sir Walter Scott and other writers in the 1800s which led to the growth of popular destinations such as Callander and Aberfoyle and the development of other small villages with hostelries along the way.

This circular scenic route connects Blair Drummond, Doune, Callander, Kilmahog, Brig o’ Turk, Aberfoyle, Port of Menteith and Thornhill and includes a wide range of things to see and do. The existing brown Trossachs Trail road signs are currently being upgraded, and new information panels, featuring a map with things to do, car parks, toilets and advice on how to enjoy the Trossachs responsibly are being introduced at strategic points around the trail.

The Trossachs Trail website and map guide encourages visitors to explore the wonderful countryside by foot, bike and boat, as well as supporting local businesses and communities. If you’re a local business or accommodation provider in the Trossachs, become a supporter of the Trossachs Trail. Visit the website www.trossachstrail.co.uk for more information.

The partners are also working on major infrastructure projects, backed by recent success in securing a grant of £375,000 from VisitScotland to improve the destination for both residents and visitors. This includes expanded car parks at Ben A’an, Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar Pier, the latter two also developing visitor hubs, with upgraded toilets, litter recycling areas and bike charging points.

Finally, there are plans to reinstate the historic Roderick Dhu Watchtower path and scenic lookout, adjacent to Trossachs Pier Car Park which has stunning views of Loch Katrine, Ben A’an and Ben Venue. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Allander Rotary celebrates its 50th Anniversary

T

he last year has been a challenging one for all organisations, and Allander Rotary is no exception – but despite this, the club has continued to provide practical support to local charities in the Bearsden and Milngavie area, and to find new ways to fundraise. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in May 2020, and although members were not able to mark the occasion in the way they had hoped and planned for, with the help of Milngavie in Bloom, the community bed in the centre of Milngavie was planted around Allander’s 50th anniversary logo, designed by a pupil from Douglas Academy.

58 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Since the start of the pandemic, members have been meeting virtually every week, inviting representatives from local organisations to explore ways of working together, and sharing information and expertise, hearing from speakers on different topics – and even hosting an online lecture by Professor Jim Dickson, on Oetzi the Iceman, enjoyed by people across the world! (Available on Allander Rotary’s YouTube channel.) Fundraising activities have had to be redesigned this year, so Allander’s annual Duck Race, normally one of the highlights of Milngavie Week, was run online, and was so successful as a fun event that Santa dashes and snowmen races were run online before Christmas. Online auctions have also been held.

On a practical level, when restrictions allowed, the club ran monthly collection sessions for Dress for Success and Smalls for All, resulting in huge amounts of donated goods for both organisations – these sessions will resume when Covid regulations allow. Allander’s current president, Lynne Gibbons – its first female president – wanted to focus the year on making a difference to women, so in addition to these collections, the club has established a working relationship with Milngavie and Bearsden Women’s Aid, supporting social media and campaign messaging, making donations, and providing Christmas gifts for the refuges in the area.

As part of Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign, again with Milngavie in Bloom, 3500 crocuses have been planted in the grassy area off Mugdock Road, across from Milngavie Youth Centre, resulting in an annual spring display of purple. Wild polio was successfully eradicated in Africa in 2020 and this now leaves only Pakistan and Afghanistan where there are still small but reducing numbers of cases arising annually. Find out about Allander Rotary on Facebook, Twitter and on our website www.allanderrotary.org or for more information email secretary@allander-rotary.org
