Welcome

JULY - AUGUST 2021 EDITION

In This Edition...

I

t’s so nice to see people around the countryside and lochs without that nagging feeling that maybe they shouldn’t be here! We’re slowly emerging back into the daylight and it’s a welcome relief for all the Park’s businesses and their patient customers. Halfway through our second year of dealing with COVID and as a community we’re still here, still providing the local goods and services, still welcoming visitors. All we need now is the weather.

Late summer is a beautiful time here, and if you were looking for a place and time to help de-stress you’d be hard pressed to beat Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park right now. Take a deep breath and enjoy.

Katrina, Lisa, Simon The Park Life Team

Of course, Park events have taken a noticeable hit and will take a while to build up again. It’s good to see Doune the Rabbit Hole (12-15 August) back with a bang, with an arguably bigger and better line-up than ever (too big to list here; see the website). Tickets are on sale at www.dounetherabbithole.co.uk A bit later in the year the Gartness Beer Festival makes its return on 23rd October. This event is run for the benefit of local charities, and last time out it was a huge success. The organisers are keen to get sponsors on board now, so get in touch if you can support the festival. Event tickets and information on sponsoring/advertising can be found at www.gartnessbeerfestival.co.uk

Volunteers log record breaking figures in Argyll woodland thanks to funding

A

COMMUNITY grant has helped volunteers log record breaking visitor numbers three times greater than predicted for the winter months at a Scottish woodland by Loch Goil in Argyll.

Two people counters have been installed at Cormonachan Community Woodlands (CCW)in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and between October 2020 and March 2021 recorded 2,795 people. The installation of the technology has been funded by a Paths for All grant and has helped the volunteer group record the footfall at the site strengthening their funding application for a 2km path extension.

The extension would allow visitors to reach the Cormonachan Waterfalls, a stunning landmark within the woodlands which is currently too dangerous for the public to reach. Aberdeen-born retiree, Douglas Locke (80), has been volunteering for CCW since 1998 and was appointed Secretary in 2014. Douglas is passionate about preserving the native woodlands and looks to find new ways to share the Scottish beauty with the public, and welcome new visitors. Douglas said: “The people counter posts have been a great addition to the woodlands and has helped us accurately monitor how many people visit daily – and the increased footfall has been a lovely surprise! “Many people have looked to the outdoors to keep busy during the last year, and I hope it has highlighted just how much Scotland has to offer and how important it is to have access to nice outdoor spaces. “By logging our visiting levels, we hope to further expand the project turning the Woodlands into a real tourist attraction to support the local economy.” Prior to lockdown, the CCW team hosted a range of events to support the Argyll community, including live theatre performances, outdoor art galleries and memorials.

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

With the warmer days on the way, the voluntary team are eager to showcase Cormonachan Woodlands as a hidden gem to the wider public.

Douglas added: “We preserve 63.9 hectors of ancient woodlands which consists mainly of oaks, hazel and other native plants. With membership funding we were able to set up a red squirrel hide, and a contemplation shelter with an absolutely magnificent view over Loch Goil people love it. “Our projects are funded by donations, membership schemes, the local community and grants like the one from Paths for All. “We see a wide range of people accessing the woodland which makes our work even more important to ensure the area is safe and accessible.” Paths for All awarded £65,459 worth of grants to 33 groups across Scotland, from the Isle of Lewis to the Scottish Borders, who have transformed neglected parts of their local path networks. Community Path funding will be used for wide-ranging work including structural improvements, installing signage, hiring tools or contractors, promoting hidden routes and improving biodiversity along path networks. This year’s grants have been funded by Nature Scot, Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government. The Community Path grant is now open for applications for up to £1500 to support upgrade, promotion, and maintenance of local paths. Rona Gibb, Senior Manager at Paths for All, said: “With walking being one of few reasons for leaving our homes over the past year, it has shown how important it is to have access to nice outdoor spaces and routes. “The work ongoing in communities across the country

has far more than local value – it has a big impact on improving the physical, mental and social health of society. “Having safe and accessible local greenspace is so central when it comes to keeping us active and connecting with nature and our community. “The work of volunteers improving their local path network is invaluable, and is fundamental to encouraging more people to walk every day and everywhere.” Paths for All works with Scottish Government and 30 partners to support and deliver national policies, such as the National Walking Strategy and other ‘active travel’ initiatives. The Scottish charity awards thousands of pounds worth of grants to worthwhile projects that improve health, promote walking and improve environments for people to be active in. Paths for All’s focus is clear: it wants to get Scotland walking: everyone, every day, everywhere. For more information on Paths for All, visit: www.pathsforall.org.uk

save the bees! I

t’s summer; it’s the time of the year when the bees should be buzzing all over the place, going about their work as diligently as only they can. But something seems to have gone wrong. Have you noticed how there just aren’t that many bees around as there used to be in the past?

1. smart gardening

Plant things that bees like. Bees go where the pollen is. If you want to support the growth of the bee population, then plant bee-friendly plants that feed them. Examples of bee-friendly plants are sage, lavender, salvia, oregano, ironweed, yarrow, honeywort, yellow hyssop, alfalfa, dragonhead, echinacea, buttercup, bee balm, English thyme, and goldenrod. Bee-friendly plants are easy to grow. Remember, bees love flowers that are yellow, purple or blue. Avoid plants that are “double” or have extra petals rather than anthers. Also plant bee-friendly flowering trees such as sourwoods, tulip poplars, oranges, and tupelos. The advantage of bee-friendly plants is that pests such as wasps, yellowjackets, and hornets find them repulsive. They keep the air in your garden clean and fresh. Also, stop controlling your garden so much. Allow some weeds to grow. Weeds such as a flowering dandelion, for example, can have as many as a hundred florets – and will have the bees buzzing all over them.

2. buy organic food only

The most powerful way to support bees is to buy only organic food. You can make a decision right now to buy only organic fruits and vegetables. Shop at the local farmer's markets or organic food stores only. When everyone starts buying organic foods, that encourages farmers around the world to grow food without the use of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We discuss why chemical fertilizers and pesticides are so dangerous for bees in the next point. But here’s what you should know – there is nothing to beat fresh seasonal organically grown food when it comes to taste

18 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

and nutritious content. Also, going organic in a big way really helps reduce the carbon footprint. This is a win-win for all of us in every way possible.

3. avoid chemical fertilizers & pesticides

Make no mistake: chemical fertilizers and pesticides are the biggest killers of bees. They are bad enough for the health of humans; they are much worse for bees. Bees love chemicalfree plants and gardens.

4. build bee-friendly shelters in your property

Bees need a secure place to live. They usually make use of dead trees, branches, abandoned animal barrows and underground nest tunnels to build their hives. You can do your bit by building inexpensive bee blocks in your property, such as blocks of wood with holes of different sizes. You can be sure that once the bees feel its secure enough, they are going to set up a beehive there real soon. 5. Buy Honey and Support Our Beekeepers! The best way to restore the bee population is to support beekeepers. And that means supporting beekeepers. Beekeeping is no longer as profitable as it used to be in the past, because of the declining population of bees.

Local communities find new ways to improve visitor management

M

any of the villages and communities in the National Park have recently secured funding from the newly introduced NatureScot Better Places Green Recovery Fund. These grant awards allow community groups, charities and organisations to improve their local areas for both residents and visitors.

In East Loch Lomond, Drymen Community Development Trust were awarded funding for a new village website, visitor information panels, and repairs to parking bays on the Village Square owned by the community. Whilst Cashel Forest Trust and RSPB Loch Lomond also secured funding. The largest award winner was the Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. They secured £68,000 for their ambitious Two Lochs Visitor Management Project, which includes a pilot litter bin initiative on West Loch Lomond, temporary toilets at Duck Bay and Arrochar and the employment of three seasonal Visitor Services Wardens in the busy Arrochar area.

22 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Local MSP Jackie Baille meets new village wardens at Arrochar at new toilets, by the head of Loch Long.

Commenting on the awards to communities, Bridget Jones, NatureScot’s Green Recovery Fund Manager, said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer funding to help support visitor management activity in the National Park. Working with communities and local organisations to helps ensure one of Scotland’s most spectacular and accessible places for experiencing nature and the outdoors is well looked after and enjoyed.’’

The centre was set up in 2019 by a partnership between the Steamship Sir Walter Scott and Callander’s Community Development Trust and Community Council. Open from Fridays to Sundays, hopefully building up to 7 days a week, depending on demand. Visitor Information is now available online at www.visitcallander.uk

Away from NatureScot funding, Luss Estates have opened a 250-space car park south of the village. Their new car park is already making a positive impact on managing visitor numbers to the conservation village at peak times, protecting the heart of the village from vehicles.

Also, in the Trossachs, the next phase of the revitalisation of the Trossachs Trail has taken place, a project led by Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs. Following the introduction of a new website (www.trossachstrail.co.uk) and upgrading of brown information signs along the 40-mile route, new information panels have been introduced at key locations, showing things to do, along with the locations of toilets and car parks.

Meanwhile, Callander’s community-led visitor information centre has reopened in a new location in the former Royal Bank of Scotland building at 55 Main Street, close to Ancaster Square in the town centre, where an expert team of local volunteers advise visitors on what to do in the local area. www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Help stop the spread and test twice weekly

H

elp keep everyone safe by routinely testing at home twice a week, even if you have no symptoms, with a free athome COVID-19 lateral flow test kit. Follow the instructions in the box to take your sample and get your results in the comfort of your own home in 30 minutes.

Alongside the rollout of the vaccine, testing will form a crucial part of everyday life as parts of society reopen. Around 1 in 3 people with coronavirus don’t have symptoms, which means they can spread the virus without knowing it. Regular testing continues to play a critical role in stopping the spread of the virus and breaking the chains of transmission.

Killearn Pharmacy From the 7th June Killearn Pharmacy will have free lateral flow device kits to collect.

A warm welcome awaits you at the Black Bull Gartmore

kitti Kitti Kovacs was appointed as the Black Bull Gartmore’s General Manager earlier this year and joined with over a decade’s experience working in hospitality. Kitti has held various role’s spanning front of house, events planning, marketing and operations, before progressing to duty management at some of the central belt’s most well-known hotels and restaurants. Having fallen in love with hospitality at the age of 19 while working as a waitress alongside studying to be a nurse, Kitti quickly realised that hospitality and working with people is what she wanted to do as a career. “When I first arrived in Scotland, I was given the opportunity to work in a local coffee shop, before working as a waitress at the Black Bull Gartmore, so my history with the Black Bull and our village goes back over 11 years.

john As the newly appointed Head Chef of the Black Bull in Gartmore, John Hyslop has over 25 years’ experience of producing great quality, well presented food and has held several AA rosettes over the years. John is extremely proud of the locally sourced, fresh seasonal menu that has been put in place for a summer reopening.

“My vision for the Black Bull is that we can become the number one destination for people looking for a perfect little local Scottish pub, or if they are looking for a tasty, high-quality meal with friendly and amazing service. We’re also aiming to be the ideal location for a few days’ staycation in one of our six newly refurbished bedrooms.

“We have worked hard to get the very best Scottish suppliers on board and the whole team are excited to bring a truly special food offering to the village.” “John and I believe that consistency and quality is key to the success of the Black Bull Gartmore and that it’s embedded into all that we offer our amazing locals and community, as well as our visitors. “I’m very excited about this journey and I believe that the Black Bull Gartmore has great potential in many ways. Having John as head chef, coupled with the support of our Board of Directors, staff team and amazing community, we will achieve many great things.”

Enter the twilight zone...

S

tep into another world. Dwell within RSPB Loch Lomond’s woodlands at twilight. Discover the vibrant and intricately patterned creatures that inhabit the night. Observe quivering antenna, orb-like compound eyes, iridescent scales, and delicate folded wings. Inhabit the botanical world of the night-pollinator. Wonder as the Moth Kota transforms – attracting Lepidoptera beneath an ultraviolet moon, then opening, like a flower, to release moths back into the darkness. We invite you to witness the first installation of the Moth Kota, an experimental shelter-sculpture created by Hannah Imlach in partnership with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds at their Loch Lomond nature reserve. The artwork invites visitors to consider how we engage with forms of life less apparent, often-overlooked or little-known. It is a space designed around the behavioural cycles and sensory world of Loch Lomond’s Lepidoptera, and a space where humans can gather; it is a space for multispecies encounter. During July 2021, public audiences will be

38 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

invited into the Moth Kota through a series of guided events, to witness Illumination, Moth Presence and Release. These events offer various kinds of encounter, each experience will be unique. The Moth Kota emerges from the collaborative practice of PhD researcher Hannah Imlach. For the past 10 years, Hannah has been creating artworks in response to specific ecologies and conservation communities. During 2020-21, Imlach has worked closely with RSPB ecologists, wardens and volunteers, moth enthusiasts, filmmakers, and material specialists to develop the Moth Kota. The project explores how a site-specific artwork can shape human-animal encounters and shift environmental perceptions. The Moth Kota will be installed within RSPB Loch Lomond from the 9th - 25th July 2021, and accessible for visitors to the nature reserve. Dedicated events can be found at www.rspb.org.uk/lochlomond

Summer is here... time to enjoy it!

A

t long last its starting to feel a bit more like summer on Portnellan Farm. After a cold and rather wet start to spring the weather finally warmed up and those bluebells, that are so much a part of our beautiful country side, burst into bloom. The cows on the farm had to wait a little longer to get outside this year as the grass struggled to get going but now they’re all happily grazing the slopes above Loch Lomond. As lockdown restrictions continue to ease across the country and many people choosing to holiday at home this year our speedboat tours have become increasingly popular with island picnics & BBQ’s proving to be a big hit. Our kayaks and paddleboards have also been in constant use now that the suns shining a little more and with a number of islands within easy reach its a fantastic way to explore the loch. It’s wonderful seeing the return to some form of normality and people getting back out into the great outdoors but its important to remember that access to the countryside does come with certain responsibilities such as taking rubbish

home with you and of course clearing up after our dogs. We live in such a beautiful part of the world it makes sense to look after it. Life on a farm is always busy. No sooner will we have finished calving before we’ll be onto silage making - the process of harvesting and preserving the summer grass for the cows winter feed. And thats on top of the day to day work moving cattle to fresh grass, making sure they have plenty of water and repairing old fences but we’re never too busy if anyone wants to pop down to the farm to pick up some of our delicious organic beef !

• 85g brown sugar • 3 tbsp malt vinegar • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tbsp tomato purée

Method Heat oil in a saucepan and add the onion. Cook over a gentle heat 4-5 mins, until softened. Add the remaining ingredients, season and mix. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 mins, until thickened. For a smooth sauce, simply whizz the mixture in a food processor or with a hand blender for a few seconds.

• 2 tsp mustard powder • 1 tsp garlic salt • 1 tsp onion salt

To serve 16 brioche buns (see 'goes well with') • Tangy cabbage slaw, homemade chipotle molasses BBQ sauce (see recipes in 'goes well with') and sweet-and-sour pickled cucumbers from a jar, sliced.

Method • STEP 1 Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Rub the pork with 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Heat a large non-stick pan until very hot and sear the pork on all sides until golden brown. • STEP 2 Place the meat on a wire rack in a roasting tin. • STEP 3 Add 1 cup of water to the roasting tin, cover very tightly with foil and cook for 5 hrs or until almost falling apart. • STEP 4 Drain the juices from the meat into a measuring jug. Shred the pork using 2 forks, discarding the fat. • STEP 5 Skim off the fat from the juices. Mix 125ml of the juices with 4 tbsp BBQ sauce (see recipe in 'goes well with') and pour over the meat. Keep warm until serving, or reheat. • STEP 6 To assemble, pile the meat into the halved brioche buns, spoon over the BBQ sauce, top with coleslaw and pickles, and sandwich together.

Grill the skewers, or cook in a griddle pan over a high heat for 3-4 mins until pink and opaque. Serve immediately with a squeeze of lemon and plenty of saffron aïoli.

sticky barbecue chicken Ingredients

• 4 chicken thighs and 4 chicken drumsticks, skin on For the barbecue sauce • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp cider vinegar • 4 tbsp light brown soft sugar • 4 tbsp tomato ketchup • 75ml apple juice • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard Method • STEP 1 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the chicken in a roasting tin, season well and cook for 40 mins or until cooked through. Either carry on with the recipe or cool and chill. This step can be done up to two days ahead. • STEP 2 Put the sauce ingredients in a pan and bring to a simmer, then keep cooking until it thickens a little and looks shiny.

Use straight away or cool and chill. The sauce will keep for a week in the fridge. • STEP 3 Heat a barbecue until the coals are glowing white hot. Brush the chicken pieces all over with the sauce and barbecue them on each side until they are browned and sticky, then brush once more with the sauce. Don’t worry about cooking them through, as they are already cooked. If you want to cook them indoors, coat them in the sauce and grill on a medium heat on all sides.

It's full steam ahead for the Save Our Steamship appeal

L

och Katrine's much-loved Sir Walter Scott Steamship has sent an urgent SOS appeal to 'Save Our Steamship'. The appeal aims to raise the necessary funds for essential boiler repairs required to enable her to sail again. A charitable trust looks after the steamship, protecting the iconic boat for future generations to enjoy. This appeal is vital for ensuring a positive future for the steamship, the last surviving screw steamer in service in Scotland. Sir Walter Scott Steamship was built in 1899 at Denny’s Yard in Dumbarton on the River Clyde at the cost of £4,269. Having completed trials on the Clyde, she was broken up for transportation to Loch Katrine. Nearly half of the steamships purchase price was for delivery, unsurprising considering she was transported by barge up the River Leven and Loch Lomond to Inversnaid. From there, teams of horses lugged the sections up the steep hills to Stronachlachar on Loch Katrine. In 1900 she was reassembled and launched for the first time onto Loch Katrine. For over 120 years, she has carried millions of passengers on the beautiful loch, part of the Great Trossachs Forest. Loch Katrine is home to Golden Eagles, Ospreys, Red Squirrel, Otter and Red Deer. The loch is also the water supply for much of Scotland's Central Belt, a fact which Tennent's Lager proudly promotes. Queen Victoria visited Loch Katrine to open its Aqueduct in 1859. It was Sir Walter Scott, born 250 years ago, that put Loch Katrine on the map. His poem 'The Lady of the Lake', published in 1810, was the day's blockbuster. At this time, composers,

44 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

writers and artists were drawn to the Trossachs and its outstanding beauty, as were the admirers of their work, who visited to see for themselves the vivid landscapes described and painted. Loch Katrine was the birthplace of Scottish tourism, and many local communities benefit from tourism in the Trossachs. Undoubtedly the steamer is a big draw, helping boost the local economy for over a century. The Steamship Trust's SOS campaign needs to raise the £400,000 required to get her sailing again. These funds will have to be secured by the end of this year to allow work to commence in time to allow sailing in the National Park in time for summer 2022. As James Fraser, trustee and CEO of the Steamship Trust, explains, this is a critical time for the steamship, and it is important to get her back into operation as soon as possible. 'We have sadly seen so many occasions where a historic vessel has had to pause sailing, only for that to become a permanent situation. So many people have had enormous pleasure sailing on Sir Water Scott Steamship. We have to act now to make sure that future generations will be able to enjoy cruises on her.' The trust hopes that the appeal will attract significant support locally and more widely with anyone who has enjoyed sailing on the steamship.

enjoy a summer festival!

T

he intimate Doune the Rabbit Hole festival takes place on the Cardross Estate, Stirlingshire. The festival has announced new dates for 2021 and a revised lineup.

All festival stages will be open air in light of coronavirus restrictions. Further measures and procedures to ensure the safety of festival goers which will be communicated as the festival receives guidance from the Scottish and UK governments later this month. Do check their website for updates. The festival features four new headliners. New acts include the only Scottish festival date for MC, rapper, songwriter and record producer Dizzee Rascal. One of the most successful British rappers of all time, the Mercury Music Prize winning MC’s seventh album E3 AF was released during lockdown.

The family-friendly favourite, which has grown to be one of Scotland’s biggest small festivals, was postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival will take place from Thursday 12 - Sunday 15 August instead of their normal mid July dates.

The inimitable Sleaford Mods also headline with their unrivalled bite, wit, humour and powerful railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy. New album Spare Ribswas released in January and made the UK album chart Top 5 with tracks like Shortcummings pre-empting that now infamous trip to Barnard Castle. Joining Dizzee and Sleaford Mods are Glasgow’s

South Lanarkshire natives Teenage Fanclub complete the headliners. Their new album Endless Arcade is just out. They play DtRH ahead of a planned 2021/2022 international tour. Festival director Jamie Murray said: “Audiences will note changes to this year’s lineup. We have worked incredibly hard to secure some truly fantastic new acts and headliners. Some previously booked acts could not make the new dates, including, to our great sadness, our 2020 headliners Belle & Sebastian and John Cale though both acts have confirmed that they will be performing with us in 2022! “We believe we've curated an epic lineup for 2021 in their absence, but if you wish you can still roll your ticket over to 2022, just as you will be able to if you

Take care of your four legged friends this Summer

W

ith Summer just around the corner it’s fair to say most of us are looking forward to the warmer days and smells of the summer blooms. Sadly these are not as appreciated by all of our furry friends however, with some developing an irritating itch during the warmer months. For some cats and dogs this is due to seasonal allergies but for many it is due to the wee beasties that become more prevalent this time of the year – fleas, ticks and mites for example. If the itch is caused by one of those beasties we are able to effectively treat it nice and quick with the use of one of our licensed and recommended flea and tick products. These work to keep your pet beastie free all year round and there are various different options. All of the products on offer at Jackson Vets are thoroughly tested and licensed for the job; unlike some you may be able to buy over the counter.

DOGS

Nexguard Spectra, Bravecto, Seresto Collar

CATS

Credelio, Bravecto Plus Have you noticed your Pet scratching or chewing at their paws even with regular flea/tick control on board? Maybe they seem to be grooming themselves more than usual, or have frequent gungy eyes. Or even regular tummy upsets? Allergies in dogs and cats can manifest in many ways, affecting both the skin on the outside and the guts on the inside! If your pet seems to be suffering from similar issues, it’s a good idea to get them checked over to see if we can get rid of that itch! While some may need medications to help control the signs, some can be simply controlled using a prescription diet. We have a great range available at the practice including the Purina Veterinary Diets.
