Welcome

JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2021 EDITION

In This Edition...

N

ot with a bang, but a whimper. So went 2020, into the dustbin of history.

Katrina, Lisa, Simon & Paul The Park Life Team

It’s been a pretty awful year, so there’s no better way to start 2021 than with a little bit of optimism. With inoculations under way against Covid-19, we can look forward to a return to normality sometime during this year. Mustn’t get too optimistic, we can’t quite relax yet. But let’s hang on to the good things that surfaced when we were all under pressure. It’s pretty obvious to us now just how valuable our NHS is. Neighbours really do care about each other, and are willing to step in when required. Science is not to be sneered at. Holidaying on our own doorstep turned out to be a surprisingly fulfilling experience. Local trades and stores can move quickly to serve extraordinarily changed circumstances. Yes, it was awful, but let’s bring the good bits into 2021. There is no irony intended when I say this; Happy New Year!

sustainable food... a way of bringing communitie s together A

t The Hub G63, we want food to be a key part of everyone’s journey towards a more sustainable way of living. With food production responsible for about a quarter of our global carbon footprint, and most of our land use, thinking more about what we eat is one of the best ways of reducing our environmental impact. That’s why we sell zero waste, local and sustainable products at our Drymen shop, The Village Hub. It’s also why we run Neighbourfood Balfron, an online food market that allows local people to buy food directly from local

producers (with collection points in Balfron, Aberfoyle, Drymen Killearn). And it’s why we have a community vegetable garden in Drymen, with another one on the way just outside Killearn. We also want sustainable food to be one way of bringing communities together. So, if you’d like to get involved in any of these activities then we would love to hear from you. discover the secrets of doon hill

D

oon Hill is well signed from Aberfoyle’s free car park. Start by crossing the old bridge over the river, close to the Co-Op. Along the way you’ll pass a graveyard, which is the last resting place of the Reverend Robert Kirk who was minister here between 1685-1692. He put Aberfoyle on the map as the ‘Faerie Capital’, inspiring many people to walk up Doon Hill. Reverend Kirk famously told the secrets of fairies in a book that he wrote. They are said to have had their revenge though, when he took a walk up Doon Hill, as they took his soul, trapping it in a pine tree at the top of the hill. Unless you also have repeated any secrets that you may have been told by the fairies then you should have a safe and pleasant walk. Follow the signs and keep on the path. You’ll see that the famous tree has rags and other items that have been wrapped around it for good luck. The walk is around 4 miles and will take you no more than 2 hours.

Take a walk on the Ben Lomond

Start Rowardennan Car Park Distance 7.5 Miles | Time 4.5 - 5.5 Hours cleared forestry where only the few silver birch trees remain at present. After a short while cross a track and continue on the uphill path.

stage 2 Ben Lomond is one of the most popular Munros, rewarding the 30,000 people who make it to the top each yeaR with fantastic views of the length of Loch Lomond and far into the hills to the north and the Trossachs to the east.

stage 1 Starting point is Rowardennan car park where there is an information centre and toilets. The mountain is not in view from the car park but can be seen from the metal jetty on the loch shore. The ascent starts from a clearly marked path at the back of the information building. Climb steadily, through oak woods to start with and then through an area of

36 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Cross a small bridge and soon there are the first views of part of Loch Lomond. Pass through a gate onto the open hill where cattle and sheep graze. The path continues to climb at a steady gradient, the views of the Loch becoming more impressive with each step. Pass through another gate. The ground becomes less steep and the final peak comes into view with the prominent zig-zag of the path visible on the right hand side.

stage 3 Keep following the path as it sticks to the broad ridge of the mountain. There are good views of the islands in Loch Lomond behind. The path climbs steeply on the final ascent to the summit ridge before levelling off to curve to the left around the rim of the very impressive eastern corrie which has been hidden until this point.

e wild side... stage 4 From the summit trig point there are stunning views in all directions, particularly of the southern end of Loch Lomond and its islands. It is rare to be alone at the top, as this is one of Scotland’s favourite mountains, popular with visitors and locals including fell runners who make numerous ascents in a year. The easiest and most usual route back is to retrace your outward route, but there is a rougher alternative which is not recommended unless experienced climber especially in winter.

stage 5 For the alternative, harder descent, take the rocky path north-west from the summit to descend very steeply to a col before climbing south-west to Ptarmigan at 731 metres. From here the route follows the nobbly ridge for much of the descent with excellent views down Loch Lomond. Approximately half way down the ridge, the distinctive shape of the Cobbler comes into view alongside the other peaks of the Arrochar Alps on the far side of the Loch to the west. There is a clear path although it is narrow and rocky in places. The wettest areas have been improved with large stepping stones. About two-thirds of the way down the path leaves the true ridge to descend below crags and continue on a direct route towards Rowardennan.

stage 6 The path passes through a gate and descends more steeply. Before reaching some trees at the top of the woodland bear left to go through another gate and descend alongside the burn. After an open gateway there is a good view of a waterfall. Continue down through the woods until the road is reached. Turn left here and walk along the road passing behind the Youth Hostel. For the last section it is possible to take the path to the right along the shore. This passes a modern war memorial sculpture by Doug Cocker of Dundee. Ben Lomond and its slopes going down to the loch have been dedicated as a Memorial Park to commemorate those who have lost their lives for their country. From the memorial continue round the shore a short distance to return to the car park.

hen looking for a service to help take care of those you love, you want to be sure you have made the right decision. At MyLife we understand that it is not always easy to ask someone new into your home. We believe that quality care comes from well-trained, compassionate staff and an effective and supportive branch team. For those looking for 24/7 care solutions we offer a variety of Live in services all designed to make sure that you or a loved one is receiving the best possible care - Live in companionship offers one to one care around the clock, as well as support and assistance in the home. A Live in companion is able to help with social affairs as well as more practical things such as medical appointments, shopping and running the home. - Respite is important for those who are caring for a loved one full time. Live in respite care services can be provided on a long or short term basis, as and when you require, or in advance for holidays. - As Dementia progresses, needs become more intense and it often comes to the point where a family might consider residential care, however, this can a costly option. A Dementia Care Live in Assistant will allow the person with Dementia to stay at home and in familiar surroundings whilst still receiving the care they need. They will be there day and night providing reassurance to both the customer and their family. - For people with more complex conditions, such as acquired brain or spinal injury, strokes or degenerative conditions, a Live in Specialist Carer can provide the expert support that is needed. Live in specialist care is also perfect for returning home from hospital following an operation, illness or injury, as the carer is always on hand to reduce the chances of readmission to hospital. Specialist care needs can be long or short term and MyLife is able to support with both. Whatever you choose you can be safe in the knowledge that you or a loved one will be happy, safe and supported. We put your needs at the heart of everything we do for you - understanding that your care needs to be individually tailored and focused on the choices you have made to create the lifestyle you want.

Here are 7 top tips for improving your photography in 2021 from our very own local photographer Paul Saunders. TIP 1. Give yourself a year long project. Photograph the same scene throughout the year, and reflect the changing seasons.

(Tom Weir Statue, Balmaha in Autumn & Winter) TIP 2. Shoot in what the photographers call the golden, or magic hour. That’s the first and last hour of daylight. The sun is low in the sky, creating some incredible light for photgoraphy.

(Drymen Viewpoint & Milarochy Bay) TIP 3. For portraits, try to give the subject some top shade, instead having light coming in from the sides. You’ll need to turn the subject until you see their eyes catch the light. TIP 4. Keep your camera with you, you may never again get the chance to photograph what you see. Like this example in Luss, where I’ve never seen the leaves look quite like this.

TIP 5. Get up close to nature, ideally using a prime (fixed focal lens) for some amazing quality.

TIP 6. Back to portraits and give your subject something to do that’s fun - especially kids! They’ll be more natural. TIP 7. Plan a daytrip, like going to Staffa (ferry from Oban) to photograph puffins, or the bluebells in May on Inchcailloch Island.

Paul photographs weddings, businesses and families throughout the Park Life area and beyond. He also runs regular photography training courses in Balmaha. For more details and ideas please visit www.paulsaundersphotography.com www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Park Life Interview with Ruth Holmes

What lead you to the study of squirrels? My fascination with red squirrels began when I was a child after spending several family holidays in Nethy Bridge and the surrounding area. I first saw a red squirrel in the Buchlyvie area in August 2017 but it wasn’t until the spring of 2019 that 2 pairs started breeding in two large private gardens on Culbowie Road. I knew there were lots of red squirrels in Gartmore, Aberfoyle and other areas of the Trossachs and I wanted to do my best to help red squirrels establish themselves in the Buchlyvie area. I started working with the owners of the large private gardens on Culbowie Road. Also, road signs were put up as well as feeder boxes in a small woodland next to Culbowie Road. My work along the B835 which connects Buchlyvie with Gartmore, Aberfoyle and Lomond Trossachs National Park started in October 2019. I was talking to residents along the road about red squirrel sightings and then signs from Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels were handed out to residents where the highest number of sightings (alive or dead) were recorded. I then started walking to Auchentroig wood at weekends from mid-December 2019. During the lockdown, I used my daily allowed exercise to continue my monitoring work and I now walk to Auchentroig every day. I also monitor red squirrels in Gartmore after residents

alerted me to a small woodland in the village that is threatened with felling at the end of July 2020. This small woodland has several dreys and on average I see 3 red squirrels when I visit this woodland.

Tell us what your day to day involves? When I go to Gartmore, I’m there in the morning for an hour to an hour and a half. Through winter, I will monitor the red squirrels in the small woodland for an hour and I will increase my time to two hours for the summer. I usually sit on a fallen down tree to monitor the red squirrels. I monitor the number of red squirrels in the woodland, their behaviour as well as any kit (baby red squirrels) sightings. I started my monitoring work in Gartmore in August 2020 and I saw a kit within the first 5 minutes of my first visit to the woodland. In time, I will be looking for pregnant females as well as signs that kits have been born. I would like to thank the Gartmore residents who stopped off at Auchentroig wood at the end of July and throughout August to alert me about the small woodland. Their information gave me a detailed picture of the situation there. I then go home for a quick bite to eat and then I walk to Auchentroig wood where I’m currently monitoring a pair of kits. I’ll be at Auchentroig for 2-3 hours in

Why is it so important to protect this species?

the winter but I spent 3-4 hours there in the summer. I’m monitoring the behaviour as well as the growth and development of the pair of kits. Lots of people have stopped at Auchentroig wood throughout 2020 to either ask about the red squirrels along the B835, report sightings or watch the red squirrels in the wood. In the summer, it wasn’t just local people who were stopping, tourists also stopped at Auchentroig wood. Buchlyvie residents either stop at Auchentroig or stop me in the village to report sightings. As a result of this, I know all the locations of the sightings as well as the number of red squirrels at each location. The reporting of sightings gives me a detailed knowledge about the red squirrels in the Buchlyvie area. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has stopped to tell me about sightings throughout 2020.

Red squirrels are our native species and are now on the UK’s Red List for endangered species with a population of only 120,000 in Scotland. One of the main reasons why I’m a red squirrel campaigner is to help increase the population in Scotland. 2020 has been a good year for breeding across Scotland with a high number of kit sightings being recorded with Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels. 2020 has also seen red squirrels moving into new areas throughout Scotland. Buchlyvie is part of the national trend for both high numbers of kits being born and red squirrels moving into new areas. There have been red squirrel sightings in the village itself in 2020, Culbowie Road is a hot spot for sightings. I’ve seen 5 different red squirrels on Culbowie Road since September 2020. There have been numerous sightings of red squirrels along the B835 throughout 2020, from Wester Auchentroig to Woodend Farm. Red squirrels are such great characters, they are wonderful to monitor. As one van driver said to me, watching red squirrels is more entertaining than what’s on TV. I totally agree with this!

jan-feb gardening tips January

February

Often the coldest month

Spring is in sight

January might be the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden.

This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There's plenty to do indoors this month to prepare for the season ahead. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it's time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges. 1 Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover 2 Chit potato tubers 3 Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches 4 Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off 5 Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering 6 Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting 'in the green' 7 Prune Wisteria

1 Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch

8 Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges

2 Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring

9 Prune conservatory climbers such as bougainvillea

3 Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already

10 Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over winter, remove dead grass from evergreen grasses

4 Disperse worm casts in lawns 5 Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6 Prune apple and pear trees 7 Start forcing rhubarb 8 Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 9 Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 10 Make a polythene shelter for outdoor plants

winter drive maintenance tips

Create space for snow and other drain-off by edging the sides of the driveway. Periodically seal or waterproof your driveway with a high quality sealing product. Keep the cement or blacktop clean year-round with a leafblower and pressure washer. Avoid using salt on cement driveways in winter, especially during the first year. Salt can lead to cracks in cement and other damage.

Switch to Cordless / Battery in 2021 with Fraser C Robb

M

any of Fraser C Robb’s customers have gone cordless, making use of battery powered garden equipment – will you be switching to battery this year? The benefits of using battery tools are clear. First and foremost, there’s no need to store fuel. To save costs the same battery can be used across different devices, such as lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers etc. Using a battery means that your garden tools are lighter and more portable.

Fraser C Robb stock the leading brands, including Stihl. Contact them today to find the battery range that will suit you best. Call 01360 660688.

What services do you offer?

Do you prefer a particular design style?

Do you just do residential projects?19/01/2017

We never impose our preferences on the client. We listen to what the client wants, what styles they prefer and most importantly how they need their house to work when finished - is it a family home that will work equally well for small children through to the teenage years and beyond? Is it a home that will also work as a bed & breakfast when required? Or is it remodelling the existing home to make it work better?

In addition to all the residential work, we also do commercial projects. From large scale projects such as delivering renewable energy systems including a large scale Combined Heat & Power unit, to the Tom Weir statue and picnic area in Balmaha. We also have a wide experience in securing Holiday Chalet approvals around Loch Lomond.

We offer architectural services, from a ‘no obligation’ initial meeting, to establish what the client wants to get from the completed project, through to completing the design work, submitting planning & warrant packages where necessary, putting the project drawings out to tender and supervising work on site if required.

What makes your practice different? We mix the traditional craft skills with the latest techology; we can do hand drawn perspective drawings and make models as well as presenting our drawing packages in a CAD (digital) format. The best of both worlds.

What areas of the country do you cover? We cover the whole Parklife/Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park area and beyond.

Please contact Murray for a no obligation meeting on 07799778086 or email murray@mw-consultants.co.uk www.parklifescotland.co.uk scotland.co.uk || 69 39 www.parklifescotland.co.uk
