In This Edition... Happy New Year! Twenty-twenty (it does have a bit of a ring to it!) is upon us, and we look forward to another year with you, our readers and advertisers. In this issue we are blurring the line between reader and advertiser, since we have a business feature on pages 44 to 47. This is anchored by Business Gateway, letting you know of the support available for local businesses, particularly with free courses to improve business skills. Other business resources are featured too. This will become a regular item in Park Life, and useful

if you are running or starting your own business, or if you simply want to bring your skills up to date.

Katrina, Lisa, Heather The Park Life Team

Talking of local businesses, caterers Turnip the Beet are featured on page 18 with a short report on their Chistmas Dinner event. It’s so nice to hear a heartwarming story of people bringing the community together. Our entertainment listings are particularly varied in this issue, with live music, live theatre, live opera, cinema, exhibitions, and of course Dougie McLean live in Balfron. time to ditch the smartphone!

A

s Spring beckons, we ask – will this be the year that you get off your smartphone and instead use a camera to take photographs? If so, here are 9 top tips from local photographer Paul Saunders.

1. learn camera settings It may seem daunting to try and understand how a camera works and to work out what all the dials and controls mean. This is not helped by the manuals that the manufacturers send with their cameras. There are though some great videos on You Tube and all of Tom Ang’s books are excellent.

2. take less photographs Less is more. Think back to the days of film when each roll of film had 12, 24 or 36 exposures. You had to think carefully before taking a photograph. Don’t just rattle off loads of pictures with the aim of picking the best, instead take some time composing and carefully framing the picture. Think about the settings, the light, the story before taking the photograph.

10 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

3. commit to a photography project A photography project is a great way to narrow down the focus on what you are photographing to really improve techniques. Think of a subject or theme that inspires you and then build a series of photographs on that theme.

4. capture emotion Capture natural moments, ideally ones where there is real emotion. Try to photograph a subject or scene that triggers emotions when viewed again by you (or others), maybe something that makes you happy, sad, laugh, cry, or any other type of emotion.

5. seek inspiration Find photographers whose work inspires you. Look at examples with fresh eyes and try to break down the key elements that you like about their photographs. You’re not looking to copy what they do, just understanding you feel that their work is so good.

6. stay sharp You can correct many things in editing software; however, your picture will need to be sharp. Practice on how to hold your camera really still (using your body to help keep the camera steady) and understand the shutter speed that you shouldn’t go below when handheld. Consider using a tripod to help during low light.

7. study light Start looking at light and discover how to work with it. Learn the difference between strong daylight and shade. Plan to make use of the Golden Hour, the first and last hours of daylight. See how shooting photographs at these times can produce beautiful results.

8. take your camera with you Ok an obvious one. But how many times have you seen a stunning scene and not had your camera with you? Keep a camera in your car, or with you when out and about so that you are prepared to capture a stunning scene that you see before you.

9. find new angles Don’t just shoot at eye level, get down low (or high) hunting out creative angles. Push your creativity. Paul Saunders photographs weddings, family portraits and businesses throughout the Park Life area. He also runs regular photography training courses at Balmaha. a journey from new zealand to gartmore

S

teve and Donna, the new owners of Kuruba Kennels and Cattery have both been passionate animal lovers and worked with animals since leaving school. Steve worked initially as a shepherd in his native New Zealand with a team of ten working dogs. He became a successful sheep dog trialist, winning many open dog trial competitions and became the youngest dog trial judge in NZ at that time. Donna worked with horses and trained in natural horsemanship techniques in Devon and California. They met working on a tourist farm in Devon

12 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

demonstrating horsemanship and dog trialling to the public. They moved to NZ together, along with Donna's horse Talisman, and this is where they married, and for 15 years managed a 6500 acre sheep and beef farm, had two boys, James and Riley who are now aged fourteen and seven. After visiting family two years ago in Scotland, they all decided their dream was to have their own business in the pet industry back home and six months later they arrived in Scotland with a few suitcases, their two Jack Russells, and Talisman the horse.

After almost two years of searching they came across Kuruba Kennels and Cattery and both knew they’d found not only a dream house and business, but also a fantastic location for scenery, schooling and community spirit! Another huge plus is that the owners, Colin and Di, built a successful and well-reputed business, and are currently training Steve and Donna so that the transition is as smooth as possible. They will have all the background info on their four legged guests so that the same great service continues. Steve and Donna have both devoted their whole lives and entire working careers to caring for a wide range of animals over the years - cats, dogs, horses, sheep, cattle, goats and deer. There's nothing they wouldn't do for the animals in their care. When Donna's horse was sick she camped in a tent next to his stable and barely left his side until he was totally better again. So they certainly know just how much people's four legged family members mean to them and will take great care to ensure they are well looked after. b flats – gartocharn's own special singing group!

F

or almost twenty years, Kilmaronock Millennium Hall has been alive with the sound of music from this active singing fellowship of singers. Their distinctive blend of classical and popular music has won the hearts of audiences in various parts of the National Park area. Over the years, the singing has been interspersed by some memorable comedy sketches which proved to be popular with many members of the audiences. The singing group was formed in 1997 by Robin Barr, but it was not until 2001 that The B Flats produced their very first concert – Cafe Chantant. At that time, our numbers were quite limited, but the audience enjoyed the evening and for the first time, we were able to donate £900 to CHAS. This has become a way of life for the B Flats. To date they have

raised over the £30,000! During the intervening years, Robin led us in many concerts, often providing many arrangements for four-part voices, especially to suit our voices. In 2014, he expressed a desire to step down as conductor. The baton was handed to Linsey Campbell, with Rosalind MacGowan remaining as our very accomplished accompanist. The present situation is that Rosalind is acting as Interim Conductor, with her friend, Helen Barclay, standing in as yet another very accomplished accompanist! In 2019, Rosalind resumed her position as accomplished accompanist and now The B Flats have a new enthusiastic conductor, Cairi Edwards. Robin, in recognition of his sterling work as choir master/music arranger over the years, was installed as Honorary

President in 2014. He continues to be part of the choir whenever he is not in residence in Orkney! Helen Glasgow continues with her sterling work as Librarian, as does Lynn Simmers, who is our very able Treasurer. Membership is open, without audition, to all who live in and around the National Park. This provides an opportunity for those who like to sing but do not have a musical background. However, we do have a mixture of professional musicians and enthusiastic amateur singers in the group! The group meets every Thursday, in Kilmaronock Millennium Hall from 8.00pm until l0.00pm. For more information please contact the Secretary, Sheena Brennan 01389 753086.

A New Year’s Resolution you can keep - no diet or exercise required! Have you been thinking "I really should make a Will" or "Maybe I should have a Power of Attorney"? A Will saves your loved ones time, stress and money in dealing with your affairs after your death, and ensures your assets are passed on in accordance with your wishes. A Power of Attorney enables someone you trust to manage your financial affairs and make decisions about your care or medical treatment if you become unable to do so yourself. What about the title deeds to your house? If you are the joint owner of the property, is your share of the house going to pass to who you wish with as little hassle as possible? Have you repaid your mortgage? Has it been removed from the title to your house? Perhaps you are concerned about what might happen to your assets should you go into long term care? Make your New Year’s resolution to discuss these matters with Suzie Falconer of Walker Laird. She is an experienced solicitor living in your area who is able to help with these and many more legal matters. She is available for out-of-hours or home appointments, first consultations are free and there is no charge if you decide not to proceed. Bringing people together at Christmas

" World Cuisine Deli and Catering Company situated in Killearn.

It was a fabulous day, so we hope to offer the same again next year and see the event grow.

Laura

"

E

veryone can feel a sense of isolation from time to time, but for some it can be more than they can easily cope with. When that coincides with the Festive season the feeling is magnified enormously. Wouldn’t it be good to spend Christmas with people in the same boat? Laura from local catering specialists Turnip the Beet thought that her company was in a great position to help. She wanted to create a space for people of all ages, singles and couples, who were alone or isolated from friends and family at Christmas and bring them together for a special festive treat. The first, hopefully annual, Turnip the Beet Christmas Dinner took place on Christmas Day 2019. There were fifteen guests from a wide variety of backgrounds and the day was a resounding success. Turnip the Beet provided the catering with the help of donations from local suppliers Hewit and Aker (goose), and Flour Girl (Christmas cake). Visitors popping in kindly brought ad-hoc donations of wine, presents, mince pies and even home-made tablet. More volunteers helped with transport to and from the event. “It was a fabulous day”, said Laura, “so we hope to offer the same again next year and see the event grow”. Park Life loves to hear about initiatives like this, and we wish Laura success for future events.

eople come from all over the world to walk the West Highland Way. The first stretch of the 96-mile walk from Milngavie to Fort William goes right through the heart of the Park Life area. Sometimes we can take for granted what’s right on our doorstep. To tempt you to walk a stretch or two we asked the See Loch Lomond team, (the on-line guide to Loch Lomond & the Trossachs) to pick some highlights to be found from Milngavie to Inverarnan.

Celebrating 10 Years of Dyslexia Help in Stirling Fiona Macdiarmid – well known to many families in the Stirling area as Director of the successful Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling – the Cellfield team are delighted to be celebrating this achievement and committed to helping more people unlock their potential.

F

or the team at Cellfield in Stirling this year is a significant milestone because it marks 10 years since they started delivering the Cellfield Dyslexia Programme. Headed by teacher,

Dyslexia is estimated to impact around 10% of the population and there are many approaches and resources which can help people overcome this barrier to learning. What makes Cellfield unique is the relatively short period of time it achieves results and the fact that the gains achieved are consolidated in the months after completing the programme. This is only part of the story, however. As Fiona explains, “I consistently hear from families that Cellfield is life changing. This is because not only

are there improvements in reading and language, Cellfield also impacts positively on overall confidence and self esteem”. Fiona and her team are always impressed by the commitment shown by clients and what they achieve. “Cellfield is the most exciting development in education I have come across in my 30 year career and seeing clients’ progress makes it so rewarding”, says Fiona. are you digitally prepared for the future? W

ith the 4th industrial revolution upon us, Industry 4, it’s vital that your business has a digital strategy. The digital skills gap the UK is facing needs to be tackled head on by employers as it is essential to our future economic growth, innovation and internationalisation. However, despite moves by the government to increase the number of skilled staff in the workforce, growth in demand for digital skills across all sectors of the economy means the skills gap is continuing to widen too. It has been shown that businesses who are embracing digital technology are far more likely to engage with customers, are developing new processes to enhance and streamline their service, are far more likely to develop new products, and are able to in turn sell their products and services to a local and global market place, 24 hours a day and at a reasonably low cost.

Businesses now don’t have the comfort of putting off either upskilling current employees or recruiting staff to manage their digital presence. It is only a matter of time before such an oversight will impact on a business’s bottom line. It can be as simple as having a person manage your website and/or social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN, etc.) in order to interact with your customer base and convert leads to sales. Assistance is available to employers via Skills Development Scotland (SDS) Training Partner, The TELL Organisation. TELL delivers a fully funded Digital Marketing Diploma by way of upskilling current staff or can assist you in finding a suitably qualified candidate via their free candidate selection service.

I

am super excited to announce the opening of my fabulous new studio in Aberfoyle! We offer classes throughout the week in Pilates, Yoga & Mindfulness, plus provide Osteopathy and biomechanical assessments. We are going to be adding weekend workshops too, of varying themes, so you can really deepen your practice and take extra time out to de-stress and have more you time. Pilates has been in the press a lot recently, and quite rightly so. It is an amazing method whereby you build the necessary foundations for efficient movement. We work on mobility, strength, balance and body awareness. Class size is kept small but I also offer 1-2-1’s. I’m very hands-on! I’ll guide you into the perfect positions so you feel the exercises work, bringing nutritious movement to every part of your body. Booking is essential.

Jenny Livingstone teaches Yoga & Mindfulness every Wednesday at 10am for a blissful 90 minutes. Jenny trained in the Iyengar Method in 1980 and has studied Buddhist meditation for 30 years. Mindfulness has been proven to improve your ability to cope with stress and Jenny is the perfect soul to guide you through it. Dropin’s welcome. I am thrilled that other movement teachers are going to join the team at Tall Trees. There will be more classes on offer soon! Watch out for more details on Facebook and my website. For more information please contact me either by email or text.

Osteopathy can be a key part in your recovery from any pain or strain, from top-to-toe. I’ve had years of experience, qualifying in 2007 and run Bearsden Osteopaths since 2013. I am incredibly happy to now be working in Aberfoyle, in my beautiful studio. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Nature Hub open seven days 10am-4pm (11am-3pm in winter)

R

SPB Scotland Loch Lomond is a special place for wildlife. Located on the south-east shores of the loch, the site has a variety of habitats from ancient woodlands to wildflower meadows and swampy grasslands. RSPB Scotland has been managing the site in partnership with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and Scottish Natural Heritage since 2012 to make it an even better home for nature.

Seasonal Highlights

Spring – The woods are full of bluebells, and summer migrants start to return, filling the air with song. Listen out for wood warblers and redstarts. Summer – Ospreys search for salmon and other fish in the Endrick Mouth. Wildflowers are in bloom. Butterflies including small pearl-bordered fritillary are often seen. Autumn – Migrating birds, such as ducks, thrushes and waders, stop over to feed on the reserve. Winter – Greenland white-fronted, greylag and pink-footed geese gather in large numbers to take advantage of the sheltered roosting and feeding sites.

Families: Your Adventure Starts Here! RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond is the ideal place for families to go on an adventure. Fun, self-guided activities like den building & birdwatching are available at any time, or you can hire one of our explorer backpacks or bug hunting kits (available when Nature Hub is staffed). Come and explore the underwater world by pond dipping (available when hub is staffed, April until mid-October) £3, £2 RSPB members.

The Airey woodland trail winds through the woodlands, past a small pond and out into a field nicknamed 'Orchid Field' because of the amount of orchids found here in the summer. The Viewpoint Path is fully accessible and leads to views of Ben Lomond and Surrounding Hills while overlooking the fen and woodlands of the reserve. If you would like to hire a guide to get a personalised tour then please contact us for more information (MaySeptember, charges apply). Part of the work we do at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond involves carrying out wildlife surveys. Previous surveys have brought us five spotted crakes (there are only 80 pairs of this secretive bird in the whole of the UK) and the discovery of the rare Great Otter Spider. This spider has not been recorded in Scotland since 1994, so, coming across it here, while on a dragonfly training course, was very special indeed. Other wildlife highlights have been catching glimpses of otters and pine martins on our cameras, witnessing ospreys fishing over the water and watching flocks of wintering geese feeding in the fields on site.

Families are more than welcome on our guided walks. For intrepid explorers we would recommend wellies. The trails at Nature Hub are suitable for pushchairs. Prices: Entry to the Nature Hub and trails are free. There are charges for events, guided walks and equipment hire. To find out more about visiting, volunteering or about any of our work contact us: RSPB Loch Lomond, High Wards Farm, Gartocharn, Alexandria, G83 8SB. E: rspb.org.uk/lochlomond T: 01389 830670

GLASGOW STUMP REMOVAL

Park Life | Business

Glasgow, Edinburgh & Stirling Tree & Hedge Stump Removal What we do with your unwanted tree stumps.

Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Glasgow Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. We use various machines to efficiently and effectively grind stumps of different sizes and in awkward access locations.

Arborist Services We also provide full arborist services through our associates, including felling, crown thinning and lifting, pollarding etc.
