In This Edition...

After all the early promise of a summer of beautiful weather, we seem to have got the usual mixed bag. Talking to visitors to the area highlights another side to our view of our own home. The weather, mixed as it is, introduces unexpected diversions into a holiday, and our foreign guests appreciate the unusual. And of course, mixed weather means beautifully lush countryside which everyone appreciates.

Talking of the unusual, we have a feature in this issue on page 24 & 25 about an accommodation trend which is proving quite a hit with visitors. Quirky accommodation is springing up around the Park to complement the established hotel and B&B, and is helping to draw in the record numbers of visitors we continue to welcome. There’s a bit more to it than renting out your garden hut and calling it glamping!

Callander Jazz and Blues Festival continues to grow and more than lives up to expectations. This year sees 50 gigs in 12 venues over three days, with first time appearances and the return of popular performers. If you can’t spend the whole weekend there, check out the schedule and pick out a favourite.

200 MILES AROUND THE HEART OF SCOTLAND

Heart 200 is Scotland’s newest touring route. A 200-mile journey around the Heart of Scotland, taking in the historic cities of Perth and Stirling, and linking our two national parks via scenic Highland Perthshire.

iscover the beauty and mystery of the Heart of Scotland by following the Heart 200 route. Whatever your personal interests and reasons for wanting to explore Scotland, this route has lots to offer and promises a holiday that will leave you with memories to treasure forever.

So, whether your pleasure is hill walking, golf, visiting castles and distilleries, music, shopping, or just keeping the kids entertained, you’re sure to find plenty to do as you make your way round the Heart 200 route.

ew distilleries have seen such radically different histories pass through its doors. The Victorian structure that now houses Stirling Distillery was established in 1888 but there is evidence to suggest that the site was in use as early as the 1500s as horse stables for King James I. When the permanent structure was built it was used as a church temperance society hall which quickly (and unsurprisingly) transformed into a public school.

Park Life | Business Next up came a wireless repair shop which was then followed by a local blacksmith taking ownership and the building earning its well-known nickname “The Old Smiddy�. After its smithing days were done in the early 2000s the site sat empty until 2016 when Cameron and June McCann purchased Stirling Gin's first local home.

With a visitor’s centre, shop and garden, Stirling Distillery has plenty to offer. Gin Tours and tastings, masterclasses, drinks education and training and seasonal events all through the year.

Stirling Distillery makes, bottles and labels all of its products on site, by hand, and has an arresting view of Stirling Castle from its front door.

he kirkhouse inn has been a focal point in Strathblane and surrounding area for many years and continues to be very popular. It is ideally situated on Glasgow road, the main through road in the village. There is ample parking space and is on the main bus route between Glasgow and Balfron.

We decided on the"specials" menu for starters and main course. My partner started with wild venison salami, beetroot relish and the sourdough bread. The bread was served on a wooden platter with a good portion of real butter. Wonderful. She chose the main course of Ardunan Farm Rare Breed Pork Lion Chop, homemade fruity sauce, Grilled Cabbage and Stornoway Black Pudding Croquette. This was an imaginative dish from head chef Chris, very well prepared and presented, as were all the dishes. Delicious. I had the torched mackerel fillet, smoked mackerel pate, apple, yoghurt and dill with a realistic handmade simulation of quail egg. Amazing.

My main course of pan-fried cod, chorizo and tomato relish, avocado, crab remoulade was also delicious.

Altogether a very good experience, with front of house handled expertly by Danelle and her team. To finish we had one dark chocolate tart, orange curd, a little piece of honeycomb and ice cream, and I chose a cheese board with a very good varied selection. Excellent. They have a very good bar menu with plenty of choices.

We were very happy with a good bottle of Sauvignon blanc, and I had a glass of red wine with my cheese.

All wine was very well priced.

hris was born in Nottingham and now lives in Glasgow. He grew up in a very family orientated hospitality business and learned his trade from a very young age.

After finishing his studies, Chris worked in several Michelin star restaurants alongside world renowned chefs.

He continued his career all over the United Kingdom and spent a lot of time in the North of Scotland where he developed a passion for using local, seasonal produce.

His style is classical British with a modern twist.

He prefers fresh seasonal ingredients, which utilise fresh herbs, local produce and fresh fish.

He is new to the Kirkhouse team and has settled in well. He is looking forward to bringing a refreshing, updated menu.

here is something for everyone at this year’s 14th Callander Jazz & Blues Festival. It promises to be one of the best yet, with over 50 gigs across 12 venues playing jazz, blues, rock, swing and boogie from Friday 4th through to Sunday 6th of October. With the sad passing of founder Graham Oliphant early this year, the festival organisers are determined to make this year’s event a special one for Graham and his festival legacy.

and a Blues Cruise on the Sunday onboard the famous Sir Walter Scott Steamship on the beautiful Loch Katrine. We have also brought back by popular demand the Sunday morning Spiritual Jazz Service at Callander Kirk.

Of course, it takes great support from the community and beyond to host the festival every year and we would therefore like to thank our main sponsor Deanston Distillery, Callander Community Hydro Fund, Callander Community Council, Friends of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs and the numerous donors who have contributed in making sure this year’s festival will go ahead and be a fitting memorial for Graham and his family. From Loch Lubnaig, just north of Callander to St Fillans at the end of Loch Earn, there is a trail of interesting and different art installations. A new audio guide, available through an app, has been produced to help guide you through the trail, introducing local people and the artists who have designed and created the different art pieces.

Take a speedboat tour Ben Lomond, Scotland’s most southerly munro (the term defines mountains over 3,000 feet) features in many views of Loch Lomond. The climb starts in Rowardennan and after the initial walk through the forest the path clears and you can start to see Loch Lomond and its islands. When you reach the summit chances are that you won’t be alone, as this is a very popular walk.

Inchcailloch Island can be reached by an on-demand ferry, operated by Balmaha Boatyard. The island is part of a nature reserve, with a sandy beach at the southern end. The short climb to the islands summit is rewarded by excellent views across the loch to some of its other islands.

This is often and rightly acclaimed as one of the most beautiful parts of Loch Lomond, unspoilt and protected it is well worth a visit.

On Thursday evenings, during most of July and August, Drymen Community Trust organise Bagpiping in the Square. The Strathendrick Pipe Band march on to the pretty green in the heart of the village and play for an hour.

They’re always very accommodating to musical requests.

visit a distillery – glengoyne & deanston

There are two excellent distilleries, within easy reach of the National Park. Glengoyne is just outside of Strathblane, close to Glasgow and Deanston Distillery is near Doune, on the edge of the Trossachs. Both have excellent daily tours.

If you’re walking the West Highland Way walk one of your highlights will be the descent of Conic Hill with fine views of Loch Lomond and its islands. The Conic can also be climbed with a walk that starts at Balmaha’s public car park.

Loch Lomond Wakeboarding is based at the Ardlui Hotel, at the northern end of Loch Lomond. A fun and adrenaline filled way to experience Loch Lomond, don’t worry if you’re not an expert as they offer full tuition. They also rent paddleboards, kayaks and canoes.

Named after the famous writer whose poems first attracted visitors to the loch, the steamship and Lady of the Lake have recently increased the number of sailings each year. A popular option is to take your bike on board (cycle hire available) and then cycle back along the tarmac path that follows the loch.

The Lodge at Aberfoyle has a Visitor Centre, where you can view live CCTV footage of nearby Osprey. In the forest itself there is a hide where you can see wildlife, including red squirrels. There are information panels to help you to identify what you have seen.

On the West Highland Way, near Inversnaid there is a cave that is said to be Rob Roy’s hiding place. Legend has it that the outlaw hid here as part of daring raids to steal cattle and sheep. The exterior of the cave can be seen on a Cruise Loch Lomond boat trip. ‘CAVE’ has been helpfully written in white to help you to spot it from the loch!

An on demand ferry will take you to the ruins of the priory on the island of Inchmahome. The island can be found in Scotland’s only lake – The Lake of Menteith, which is in the Trossachs. Previous visitors to the island have included Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots.

Go Ape! Just outside of Aberfoyle boasts the longest zip wire in Scotland. The crossing takes you over trees in the Queen Elizabeth Forest to an aerial assault course.

yslexia is estimated to impact around 10% of the population and, in addition to hindering learning, this can also lead to low self esteem. Anyone who suspects their child may be dyslexic should consult their child’s school because there are many resources, coupled with good teaching, which can help. In the Stirling area, help is

also available from Cellfield, a unique approach to helping people overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties. For the past 10 years, the small Cellfield team – based in the successful Kip McGrath Education Centre on Stirling’s University campus – have been delivering the programme which can achieve gains of up to 2 years in reading after just 2 weeks.

Cellfield is provided by teacher, Fiona Macdiarmid, who also owns and runs the Kip McGrath tuition centre. She is passionate about the difference it can make; time and again she hears from families that doing Cellfield proves to be life changing as not only does it improve reading and language processing, it also has a positive impact on overall confidence. One parent commented

that her daughter’s “reading, writing and spelling came on so much but most of all her confidence and selfbelief ”. Fiona explains: “hearing positive feedback from parents is so rewarding, however the greatest reward is seeing each child progress and break through the learning barrier caused by their dyslexia”.

It is said the Highland games date as far back as the 11th century, when King 1 Malcolm III called a foot race to the summit of Craig Choinnich, near Braemar, in the hopes of finding the fastest runner in the land to become his personal courier.

The games we know today have been around since the 1800s. Among the most historic is the Braemar Gathering which was awarded Royal Patronage by Queen Victoria and is still regularly attended by the reigning monarch and other members of the Royal Family.

Heavy contests like the hammer throw test brute strength, while field events such as the hill race test speed and stamina. Pipers show off their musical skill in the solo and band competitions, and dancers attempt flawless performances of famous dances like the Highland fling.

The caber toss originally involved tossing logs over chasms! Today, this ability is 4 judged on style rather than distance: competitors aim to flip a log weighing up to 11 st in such a way that it falls from them in a ‘12 o’clock position’.

In 2014 a new Guinness World Record was set at the Masters World Championships 5 in Inverness for the most cabers tossed at the same time. Over 160 kilted athletes took part, with 66 cabers being successfully tossed in the allotted time.

Highland dancing was originally an all-male event. It wasn’t until the late 19th 6 century that women started to enter. The Cowal Gathering plays host to some of the most prestigious Highland dancing competitions in the world.

The massed bands see hundreds of pipers from different groups play and march 7 in unison. The solo piping competitions showcase a range of styles including the Pirbroch which is considered the classical genre in bagpiping music.

The World Championship Haggis Eating Competition takes place at Birnam Highland Games and sees competitors race to consume a pound of haggis in the 8 quickest amount of time. The 2017 victor was five-time winner Lee Goodfellow who finished with a time of 70 seconds.

You never know what you’ll see at a Highland games. Side show events can include 9 everything from livestock to bonny baby competitions. Aberfeldy Show and Games in Perthshire even features one of the more unusual sports of terrier racing!

Many games have boasted celebrity chieftains. Former footballer Ally McCoist, singer Susan Boyle, cyclist Mark Beaumont and tennis coach Judy Murray have 10 all been chieftains. Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Trainspotting) was named games Chieftain in his hometown Crieff in 2001, and fellow actor Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives, Mission Impossible: II) has held the honour at the Markinch Games in Fife.

Baron Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was so impressed by 11 a Highland display he saw at the 1889 Paris Exhibition that he introduced the hammer throw, shot put and the tug o’ war to his event.

Haggis hurling began as a practical joke in the 1970s but is now a popular event at many Highland games – there’s even a World Haggis Hurling Association dedicated 12 to the sport! The current world record was set at the Milngavie Highland Games in 2011, when Lorne Coltart hurled a haggis an impressive 217 ft.

The most northerly games are held in Finnmark, Norway and the furthest south in 13 Dundedin, New Zealand. The US and Canada host hundreds and there’s even an annual Latin American event held in Brazil’s Sapucaia do Sul. 14 The Scottish Highland Games Association states that all competitors in open heavy events must wear a kilt when they compete.

Heavy event athletes use plenty of tricks to improve their chances. Competitors in 15 the weight for height competition frequently deploy the ‘the handbag technique’, so called because its starting position resembles clutching a handbag.

Children aged 4-11 years can take part in the main challenge which is to read six books over the school summer holidays. They will collect prizes for every book they read along with a library stamp on their collectors card. Once they have completed the challenge, they can gain free entry into Blairdrummond Safari Park or Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre.

talks to Elspeth Bennie and Steve Rook about their exciting new business venture

When did you first start up in business?

Elspeth and Steve have both been in business individually for around 30 years. Elspeth is a graduate from the Glasgow School of Art and Steve comes from a traditional crafts background and is a silver medal holder with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.

What brought about the new partnership?

We had known each other for several years having met at various national blacksmithing events. Changing personal circumstances gave us an opportunity to come together and form a partnership. In creating the partnership we decided to extend and

refurbish our workshop space but like all building projects it has taken far longer than anticipated. The new workshop will give us the space we need for our future creative endeavours.

Any exciting projects planned for this year?

We are always busy with smaller jobs in the locality. We have a project in Dumfries for railings and gates between The Usual Place cafe and the adjacent inclusive play park. Some of the design elements were created through workshops with some of the autistic children who will be the end users. We also have a commission for a large set of arts and crafts style gates for a house in Buckinghamshire.

How does someone go about commissioning a piece of work?

The commissioning process is straightforward: First contact is made and is followed by a discussion with the client on their requirements. A site visit is used to get a feel for the location, practical requirements and budget. Initial designs are drawn up and reviewed with final designs approved for start of work. The client is invited to visit the workshop at any point during manufacture.

This market usually has around 40 stalls selling farm produce, locally grown vegetables, Scottish beef, lamb, venison and wild boar. A range of speciality producers have chutneys, jams, locally produced honeys and breads on offer as well as a good selection of Scottish cheeses. Fresh salmon and trout are usually available.
