Welcome
APRIL - MAY 2020 EDITION
In This Edition... Coronavirus COVID-19 Welcome to Park Life Magazine. My little intro to the magazine is usually a light-hearted look at all the delights our community can look forward to in the next couple of months. The immediate future will be a serious challenge for everyone, so no jokey comments today. As a community magazine, we want to do what’s best for our customers and readers. This issue of the magazine is a little slimmer than usual, since a number of significant events which we would have featured will now not take place. Importantly, our disrupted life goes on, as elsewhere, and we will all have to get on through the disruption. For most, it will be an inconvenience, but those of us who are isolated, for whatever reason, are likely to need some extra help. The elderly, vulnerable, and those who need to self-isolate to limit the spread of the virus, all need support to keep going
without going out. There are ad-hoc community support groups being set up all over by friends and neighbours who can help with grocery shopping, picking up a pharmacy order, dog walking, sometimes even childcare. Park Life Facebook page is at your disposal to publicise any initiatives to help out, whilst also being a local information source. Make sure you check here to see what the local volunteers can do for you, or how you might join in to offer your services. Meantime, for healthy mobile people, identifying vulnerable neighbours and offering help (keeping anti-virus hygiene in mind of course) may be the most useful and satisfying activity for this spring. We often emphasise the benefits of shopping local, and now more than ever local businesses need your support. Most small businesses will struggle to survive if their income is compromised for an extended period, so continuing to use them where you can will help to ensure they are still

part of our community when this is all over. Things will have moved on considerably by our next issue, but I am confident that our community will be as strong as ever. Keep safe. Katrina, Lisa, Heather The Park Life Team

The new healthcare hub at Connected Health hopes to offer a wide range of services to the local population.
The new multidisciplinary clinic has opened its doors to the public and is located in Lumsdaine Hall, next to Killearn Pharmacy.

The Connected Health clinic is a collaboration of a variety of healthcare specialists bringing together talent and expertise to the central hub to serve the needs of those people who want timely access to care". Ciaran's background in healthcare services has seen him lead other clinics to award winning
Ciaran says 'At the moment we have services ranging from Advanced podiatry and footcare, Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Massage therapy, Audiology and hearing services along with counselling and life coaching. Life Changing Approach to Dyslexia
S
tirling is home to a life changing dyslexia programme which has been helping people overcome dyslexia and other processing difficulties for over 10 years. Based at the University’s Innovation Park,
Cellfield is a multi sensory computer based programme which develops and strengthens the areas in the brain used for language processing. After only 2 weeks Cellfield clients can gain on average 2 years in their reading
age. However, this is only part of the story because the benefits of doing Cellfield can extend well beyond reading and in many cases prove to be life changing. This is because of the positive impact doing Cellfield can have on overall confidence and self-esteem. Cellfield is provided by teacher and former Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid – who also runs the popular Kip McGrath education centre in Stirling – and she believes Cellfield to be the most effective way to help people struggling to break through the barrier to their learning caused by processing difficulties. Contact Cellfield in Stirling on 01786 447527 or visit their website at www.cellfield. co.uk

RECIPE
Chicken Noodle Soup Makes 6 servings YOU WILL NEED
• 2 tablespoons butter, chicken fat or olive oil • 1 large onion, chopped • 2 large carrots, chopped • 2 stalks celery, chopped (optional) • Heaped tablespoon minced garlic (4 cloves) • 2 bay leaves • 3 sprigs fresh thyme or use 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme • 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs (4 or 5 thighs) • 8 cups chicken stock or broth, low sodium or use homemade stock • 5 ounces egg noodles (or pasta of choice) • Salt and pepper, to taste • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped • Water or more stock, as needed
DIRECTIONS Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook, stirring every few minutes until the vegetables begin to soften; 5 to 6 minutes. Stir in the garlic, bay leaves, and thyme. Cook, while stirring the garlic around the pan, for about 1 minute. Pour in the chicken stock and bring to a low simmer. Taste the soup then adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. Depending on the stock used, you might need to add 1 or more teaspoons of salt. Submerge the chicken thighs into the soup so that the broth covers them. Bring the soup back to a low simmer then partially cover the pot with a lid and cook, stirring a few times until the chicken thighs are cooked

through; about 20 minutes. If, during this time, the broth seems low, add a splash more stock or a bit of water. Turn the heat to medium-low. Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate. Stir the noodles into the soup and cook until done, 6 to 10 minutes depending on the type of noodles used. While the noodles cook, shred the chicken into strips or dice into cubes. Slide the chicken back into the pot and then taste the soup once more for seasoning. Adjust with more salt and pepper, as needed. Stir in the parsley and serve.
Make Ahead & Storing Tips The soup can be made and refrigerated for 3 to 4 days and frozen up to 3 months.
If you are not planning on enjoying the soup straight away or plan to freeze it, you might want to hold off on adding the noodles. As the soup sits, the noodles soak up the broth. You can deal with this in two ways: When reheating the soup, add a bit more broth/stock to the pot. I’ve even been known to add a splash of plain water to the soup when reheating. As long as you don’t need to add a lot, it won’t thin the flavor of the soup too much. When making the soup ahead of time, for the freshest, least soggy noodles, leave the noodles out then refrigerate or freeze the soup. When you are ready to reheat, bring the soup to a low simmer and add dried noodles. Cook until they are done and enjoy.

sail back in time on loch katrine I
n 1900 Steamship Sir Walter Scott launched at Loch Katrine. The much-loved steamer has carried millions of passengers during her 120 years of sailings. Sadly, this year she won’t be in operation as she requires essential boiler repairs. There will be additional sailings thanks to the addition of two new boats. Rob Roy III and Osprey have joined The Lady of the Lake for cruises on Loch Katrine. Rob Roy III, as the name suggests is the third boat to be named after Rob Roy MacGregor, the famous outlaw born at Glengyle in 1671, on the banks of Loch Katrine. The last Rob Roy boat was the predecessor of Steamship Sir Walter Scott. Queen Victoria was a passenger during her visit just over 160 years ago.
26 |
www.parklifescotland.co.uk
The other new addition is Osprey, a smaller boat that can get closer to some of the most interesting shoreline features of Loch Katrine. These include Goblin’s Cave, Brenachoile Point and Ellen’s Isle. Loch Katrine is a great place to see the Ospreys
who return each summer to nest close to Brenachoile Point. The Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust are grateful for all the local support for Loch Katrine. Later in the year they plan to launch an appeal to raise funds for the repairs to the steamship.
7 facts about loch katrine 1. Brenachoile Point at Loch Katrine is one of locations used in the TV programme Outlander. 2. Enjoy good food at either end of Loch Katrine with the Steamship CafĂŠ at Trossachs Pier and the Pier CafĂŠ Stronachlachar. 3. Loch Katrine is the source of water for Glasgow and much of west and central Scotland. 4. Queen Victoria opened the Loch Katrine Waterworks in 1859.
5. The steamship is named after Sir Walter Scott whose 1810 poem Lady of the Lake, set at Loch Katrine was the blockbuster of its day. 6. Loch Katrine is on the Trossachs Trail. The Trossachs Trail was the first geographical trail in Scotland. Look out for a new website and guide coming soon. 7. The loch side pathway is ideal for walking or cycling. Subject to availability bikes can be taken on all of the cruise boats. Cycle hire is available at Trossachs Pier.

Tir na nOg Holistic Centre
The most frequent comments from visitors to Tir na nOg arriving for the first time are ‘I can’t believe I haven’t visited before’, and ‘It smells lovely in here’, regardless of whether they first step into the main shop space full of incense and candles, or into the Soup Dragon Café, who bake their own bread and cakes. The various small businesses cohabiting in the buildings work together to make the spaces as welcoming and relaxing as possible, whether people are dropping in for coffee, browsing for unusual gifts, or looking forward to a relaxing massage or beauty treatment.
Over the summer and autumn seasons, there is also plenty to see outside in the grounds, and in 2020 the centre will see a major addition to the event spaces, in the form of an 18m geodesic dome marquee, which will be big enough to host events such as weddings, cabarets, conferences and concerts for up to 200 guests, in an easily-accessible space with stunning views across the fields to the Campsie Fells. Combined with the catering facilities available in the café, and the picturesque cobbled courtyard with its ribbon-covered ‘Wishing Tree’ (raising charity donations), the dome creates a unique backdrop, and will offer a range of services to support community and Arts groups and initiatives as well as private events.

Park Life | Business This new multi-purpose space is also next to Harmony Fields animal sanctuary, where visitors can join in scheduled events or pre-book for Piggy Pamper or Clydesdale Connection sessions with some of the gorgeous rescue animals living on site.
For those venturing further into the beautiful green spaces around the centre, the woodland walk is is full of little surprises, including an outdoor art gallery, resident fairies and wood-folk, and the space occupied by Green Aspirations, who run a variety of outdoor activities.
Throughout the year, the indoor spaces are home to the retail areas, with a huge range of crystals, essential oils, candles, skincare and unusual gifts including lots of handcrafted items by local makers, and to a collective of small holistic therapy businesses. There are regular training courses and events in a wide range of activities from mindfulness and healing therapies to firewalking, and daily therapy appointments for everything from relaxing Hot Stones massages to Sports Remedial massage, from Reiki to Hypnotherapy, and from waxing packages to luxury Facials, with the combined talents of the experienced therapists working from the centre creating a range that caters to all needs.

Monachyle Mhor’s renowned head chef Marysia Paszkowska, will focus on the strength of natural produce in her three-course menu. Tickets to the Long Table Lunch cost £40 (plus £4 booking fee) General entry festival tickets are required to attend the lunch.

Ground Breaking Company celebrates 20 years in business 2020 is an extremely special year for Scotia Contracts as we celebrate 20 years in business.
"
it seemed a natural progression as we were asked more and more by customers to do more with their space
"
Kenny Stewart Scotia Contracts
“it’s great to work with customers at such an early stage as we can help guide them on planning their final landscaping early in the project. From drives and pathways, bridges & ponds to flower and vegetable beds we can help in the design process” Due to the changes in climate in the last decade, Scotland has seen a huge increase in rainwater volumes which has led to large scale flooding and damage to gardens, grounds and properties. We have therefore experienced a rapid increase in customers needing support in this area and we offer ditch and field clearing and drainage works (new and replacements) to help minimise the damage along with maintenance programs to help keep fields and burns clear of debris.
We started out in January 2000 focusing primarily on landscaping and have evolved over the years diversifying into groundworks and building services. Over the years the garden has become an extension of the main house and people are now investing in additional space more than ever. “it seemed a natural progression as we were asked more and more by customers to do more with their space” From main extensions, garden rooms, gyms & offices, we can work with our customers to realise their dreams and ideas, with perfectly planned landscaping finishing off the desired look. There has also been growth in large scale groundworks services and we now work with architects and house kit suppliers preparing the ground & pipework for larger projects and house builds.

GLASGOW STUMP REMOVAL
Glasgow, Edinburgh & Stirling
Tree & Hedge Stump Removal What we do with your unwanted tree stumps. Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Glasgow Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. We use various machines to efficiently and effectively grind stumps of different sizes and in awkward access locations.
Arborist Services We also provide full arborist services through our associates, including felling, crown thinning and lifting, pollarding etc.
