About NWAIS

The Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS; nwais.org) is a nonprofit membership association that provides accreditation, professional development and support services to the 115 schools in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

NWAIS shapes the future of education by fostering transformative school leadership and by advancing, energizing and sustaining regional independent schools.

As the association of schools works together to advance the NWAIS mission, it is guided by core values. These essential principles enrich our relationships, guide our professional development programs, shape our member services and inform our process for school accreditation.

Healthy, Just, Diverse, and Inclusive Communities

NWAIS understands that schools are more than institutions. Our schools are also communities that extend beyond traditional boundaries, and include students and families of many types, backgrounds and ethnicities. NWAIS schools are good citizens in their actual neighborhoods, and often, active members of virtual, global networks of schools. Collaboration, collegiality, acknowledgement of their interconnectedness, and regard for the search for knowledge and understanding characterize our schools, both inside their classrooms and beyond their walls. Whatever their size, type, philosophy and program, NWAIS schools are committed to creating and enhancing environments for their students and staff that are safe, equitable, diverse and welcoming.

Continuous Improvement

NWAIS values inquiry, innovation and a dedication to continuous improvement as essential to school success. The association views ongoing professional development as necessary for progress, and, accordingly, offers members a rich

program of workshops and conferences each year. Similarly, the association offers formal and informal consulting to facilitate school change and growth. NWAIS holds that nothing is more important to a school’s sustained improvement than the process of accreditation. NWAIS believes that there is no agent more powerful than accreditation for helping schools advance to their next level of excellence.

NWAIS actively promotes the strengthening of current school leadership and the development of future school leadership based on the conviction that good schools can become great schools when guided by skilled, ethical and visionary leaders. Furthermore, the association believes that, with coaching and training, good leaders can become great, and great leaders can become transformative, manifesting a compelling vision for their school that engages and inspires the entire community. Consequently, the association is committed to providing opportunities for the growth and development of current and potential school leaders — from board chairs and heads, to program directors, department chairs, business officers and teachers — wherever they may be on their career path.

NWAIS celebrates the time-tested independent school commitment to educating the whole child through intentional programs based upon strong scholastic, civic, moral and ethical values. The association champions the unique experience and distinctive culture that every independent school offers as fundamental to student and school success. Through

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

NWAIS schools are expected to maintain communities that are safe and supportive for all their members. Accordingly, all schools in the association shall create and foster a program, culture, and inclusive community of students, families, trustees, faculty and staff who embrace diverse perspectives, cultures, backgrounds and identities. Schools may demonstrate their Commitment to Care in a variety of ways, including, for example, but not limited to: curricular study, extracurricular programming, articulated institutional policies, a statement of non-discrimination that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, and traditions and practices that affirm the school as a healthy, respectful, welcoming environment for all.

ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NWAIS SCHOOLS

In order to assist schools in fulfilling their commitment to providing children a highquality educational experience, we believe

that schools that are mission-appropriate for the association support the mission and core values of the association and abide by the following essential characteristics of NWAIS schools.

Commitment to the Public Good

As nonprofit organizations under the IRS code 501(c)(3), NWAIS schools must provide for the public good. We expect schools to accomplish this by offering an independent educational option for a wide variety of families and by giving back to the community through service, economic development, organizational citizenship, and providing models of quality organizations, curriculum and instruction.

Effective Governance and Operations

Success of NWAIS schools is secured through governance structures that provide fiduciary responsibility and strategic oversight, the goal of which is long-term viability. These structures work in partnership with an administrative structure that effectively manages the daily operation of the organization, ensuring the sustainability of the school for faculty, staff and families.

Primary Focus of Academic Education

NWAIS only accredits schools whose primary focus is academic education. In addition, the association only accredits schools in their entirety; it does not accredit parts of school programs. The mission, philosophy and goals of our schools articulate a commitment to academic preparation; ensuring students are inspired toward and prepared for subsequent educational opportunities. This requires NWAIS schools to create relevant and current curricula, with pedagogies based on present understanding of learning. NWAIS does not accredit schools with a primary focus that is therapeutic, wilderness-based or athletic. NWAIS schools prepare students for pursuit of future educational opportunities.

Commitment to the Best Interests of Children

NWAIS schools demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the best interests of the students and families they serve. This includes commitments to the long term sustainability of the school; providing the continuity of educational experience through to the graduation of the child; promoting a safe and inclusive community; adequate resources for advising and counseling of students at their developmental age; and comprehensive programming for residential programs in schools that have them.

Member schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status in admis-

Learning Beyond Borders at FISW

The French Immersion School of Washington offers an inquiry-based, bilingual, and multicultural education. The value of our innovative and dynamic curriculum goes well beyond learning languages.
