he Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce and its members are busily planning all manner of festive treats for the season.

Annual Holiday Preview in Paradise

The 12th Annual Holiday Preview is set for November 13-16. Visit 21 of your local businesses and get an early start on your Christmas Shopping. Participating businesses will feature refreshments, great gift ideas, and holiday décor. Enter the drawing for one of three gift baskets. By visiting all participating stores you increase your chance to win and may also explore more opportunities for buying local. Each location will have maps of participating stores

by November 1st.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Ridgefest

The fourth annual the Twelve Days of Christmas Ridgefest, a Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce Merchant Gift Certificate promotion, drives consumers to local businesses to shop, enjoy holiday décor, and enter a $1000 merchant gift certificate give-away. Contestants will drop entry forms at local businesses; each visit equals an opportunity to win one of ten $100 merchant gift certificates redeemable at local businesses. In addition, local businesses give away their own prizes. Look for entry forms beginning November 21 from

participating merchants. Last year, winners walked away with everything from music lessons to gift baskets full of delicious Joy Lyn’s Chocolate.

Paradise on Ice returns for its second season from November 15th to January 11th.

Located in beautiful Terry Ashe Park at 6626 Skyway, the Paradise Ice Rink is the only outdoor ice rink between Mt. Shasta and Sacramento. Weather permitting, the rink will be open daily for eight weeks.

Regular daily admission of $12.00 includes skates and ten-visit, individual, and family season passes available. Food will be available at the onsite Igloo Café including coffee, hot chocolate, hot dogs, nachos, soft pretzels, and other items. The rink is

Q & A With Newly Elected Council Members In advance of the November 4 election, members and stakeholders of your Chamber submitted questions for the candidates for Paradise Town Council. Answers from prevailing incumbents Jody Jones and Scott Lotter appear below.

This in turn increases sales tax revenue which can, at some point, restore the TOT funds to the Chamber, Gold Nugget Museum and the Paradise Performing Arts Center.

1. What is the most important single issue that the Town Council could positively impact, over the next 4 years?

Scott Lotter:

Jody Jones:

Improving the Paradise economy. We need to grow and encourage existing businesses and attract new businesses to Paradise in order to increase employment and provide greater retail opportunities. Some things we can do to accomplish this are: • Streamline, simplify, and assist business owners with the permit process.

• Recruit new businesses through an economic development committee.

• Build on the Skyway Safety Project and complete the infrastructure improvements to downtown (sidewalks and beautification).

• Develop a sewer system in our business district.

Paradise currently receives 19% of its revenue from sales tax. That percentage is much higher in other cities, with Chico at 43% and Oroville at 30%. If Paradise could increase its percentage to 30%, it would equate to an additional $1million dollars annually in revenue. Every time our residents drive to Chico for services or goods we are paying for Chico’s police, fire and roads!

Scott Lotter:

The top priority for the Town Council is finding a septic solution for our commercial areas-- a way to dispose of waste water in high ground water areas where there is no room to add leach lines and the ground

Paradise Mayor Scott Lotter does not perc well. Proper waste water disposal is health and safety issue and should not be confused with a business regulation.

This has been a priority that was identified 14 years ago when I was on the Downtown Revitalization Committee before I joined the Town Council. The problem remains, but with many of underlying issues resolved or underway, we could remedy the situation to support economic development and stability in our community.

2. Transient Occupancy Tax funds supported the Paradise Visitor Center. During the economic decline, The Town of Paradise redirected those funds from the Chamber of Commerce to its General Fund. How can the Town and the Chamber work together to attract visitors in the absence of funding?

Jody Jones: Although funding is not currently available, the Chamber does a great job promoting Paradise as a tourist destination with festivals such as Johnny Appleseed Days and support during the Ice Skating Rink operation. The Town partners in those events in a number of ways, including providing: • traffic control with volunteer staff and council members • police and fire coverage • Advertising and promotion of events through Town publications and website.

I would encourage those partnerships to continue and look for additional opportunities within our constrained budget.

Additionally, I would like to see a stronger partnership between the Chamber and the Town in recruiting and attracting new businesses to Paradise. Tourists need restaurants and hotels and are often attracted

In the past, a portion of TOT receipts but never all of the funds went to help fund the Visitors Bureau, the Gold Nugget Museum and the Paradise Performing Arts Center. When the economic downturn hit, the council advised these groups that funding would be ending. The choice was to either layoff Police or Fire personnel or continue to fund tourism related activities. The Town’s mission is to deliver those essential services to our citizens that they are unable to provide for themselves. These areas are police, fire, animal control, and road maintenance.

The Town will continue to support the Chamber in its efforts to attract visitors to businesses by keeping our image positive and delivering on our core mission that allows businesses to be successful. The business community, particularly the hospitality and restaurants, will need to decide independently of the Town if they want to form a business improvement district with assessments or surcharges to pay for tourism promotion. This works very successfully in many cities.

Arlan Hudson: Making a Difference in Paradise

A

rlan Hudson made it his mission to make a difference in Paradise every day. Arlan worked tirelessly for many years to improve Paradise through his volunteer efforts. In his honor, Mayor Scott Lotter encouraged the residents of Paradise to come together on October 25th to make a difference in our Town. Arlan has inspired us to make this a Paradise tradition.

The Town of Paradise dedicated the 2014 Make a Difference Day to Arlan Hudson who died at the age of 90 just 18 days before the event. Make a Difference Day was initiated twenty years ago

by USA Weekend Magazine. It occurs on the fourth Saturday of October and is a nationwide effort encouraging locals to volunteer and get involved with their town. This year, Paradise officials dubbed Make a Difference Day “The Arlan Hudson Paradise Beautification Day” and hope to continue the tradition for years to come.

Some projects for the 2014 event were postponed because of rain, but the Fire Station Roof is nearly complete and roses were planted at Town Hall.

A Remembrance of Arlan Hudson

Johnny Appleseed 2014:

J

ohnny Appleseed Days enjoyed its second year of revival in the heart of Paradise at Terry Ashe Park. As we return to our former home, we are planning for the future with expansion of both vendor area and attractions. Next year, we hope to offer a pie eating contest, cider garden, and traditional children’s games such as 3-legged races.

As always, the centerpiece of the event was the pies. Whole and by the slice, the Chamber helped bolster its operating revenue with the sale of 800 pies—that’s potentially 6,400 slices! The Chamber is proud to host this event that shares a bite of history with our community.

Most of the 76 bushels of Para-

dise-grown Granny Smith apples from Noble Orchard, (that’s 3420 pounds) were baked into pies, and the remaining apples were given out at the fest. More than 100 pie bakers, too numerous to mention, gathered at the Paradise Elks Lodge for the three-day pie baking operation. Bakers return year after year to provide this gift to the community from their hearts and their hands.

Bakers were treated to lunch from Black Bear Diner, Round Table Pizza, and La Comida. They were also treated to raffle prize gifts from PostNet, Joy Lyn’s Candies, Frank Dodini Music & Voice, Spencer Shirey Wines, Heavenscent Candles, Theatre On the Ridge, Noelle Adams of Paradise Association of Realtors, The Screen & Window Shop, Paradise Ridge Senior Center, A Stitch Above, and Damsel in Defense. Bob Irvine and California Vocations staff and volunteers provide invaluable set-up and tear down support.

Jody Jones: As I’ve discussed above it is imperative that we grow the business community in Paradise in order to have a thriving economy. It is high on my priority list as a council member. The council has a number of roles in support of this goal.

They should provide: • A streamlined and easy to navigate permit system.

• Police, fire and ambulance services to keep those businesses, employees and their customers safe.

• The infrastructure that supports those businesses, such as roads and the future sewer system.
