Truck Parade of Lights and Canned Food Drive brighten Paradise

The holiday season will shine a little brighter in Paradise on Saturday, December 6, as the community comes together for the Annual Truck Parade of Lights and Canned Food Drive. The event will roll on rain or shine, bringing dazzling displays of decorated trucks and festive cheer to town.

This beloved tradition invites the public to enjoy a spectacular holiday light show as local trucks, polished and lit from bumper to bumper, parade through town. Route not available at press time.

Truck contestants

The staging of decorated trucks begins at 4:00 p.m. at Thomas Ace Hardware, 5720 Clark Road. Entrants register at the store entrance and judging takes place at 5:00 p.m. The presentation of trophies before the parade begins approximately 6:30 p.m. Drivers will be called to order by bullhorn. Truckers are reminded of one important safety request: please do not throw items from vehicles during the parade. With children in the crowd after dark, officials say it is simply too risky.

Please Note: Unless you are a contestant in the parade, do not park in the Thomas Ace Hardware parking lot so there is plenty of room for the 150+ contestants we are expecting.

Canned food donations welcomed

The Truck Parade supports a community cause: collecting canned food donations for local holiday food banks. Those wishing to serve as a canned food drop-off location, volunteer during the parade, or help transport donations are encouraged to contact Shell Morley of DADCO Construction (License #658283) at 530-762-2981 or 2dadcoconstruction@gmail.com.

Navigating newly constructed homes in Paradise: A guide for buyers and REALTORS®

The Paradise Ridge community continues to experience a remarkable resurgence in homebuilding following the devastating 2018 Camp Fire. As the town rebuilds, newly constructed homes are a defining feature of the local real estate landscape. For buyers, this renewal brings exciting opportunities to own modern, resilient homes designed for wildfire-prone areas. For REALTORSE , understanding the nuances of these transactions is essential to guiding clients effectively.

This guide explores key considerations when purchasing new construction homes in Paradise— particularly the differences between properties built by licensed contractors and those built by owner-builders. It also highlights the Town of Paradise’s forthcoming New Construction Home Buyer Packet, an important resource to help buyers make informed, confident decisions.

Understanding Builder Types: Licensed Contractor vs. Owner-Builder

When purchasing a new home on the Ridge, one of the most critical distinctions is whether it was constructed by a licensed contractor or an owner-builder. This difference directly impacts warranties, insurance coverage,

Chamber highlights community renewal amid national

spotlight

With the recent release of The Lost Bus, a major motion picture inspired by true events of the 2018 Camp Fire, Paradise is once again in the national spotlight. Released in theaters and now showing on Apple TV, the film has rekindled conversation about our community’s past—offering a powerful moment to share how far we’ve come.

While the story revisits a painful chapter, it also presents an opportunity to show the world that Paradise is so much more than its history. The Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce is embracing this renewed attention to showcase a community defined by determination, creativity, and hope. Today, Paradise is alive with new businesses, vibrant neighborhoods, and a spirit that continues to grow stronger every day.

For those of us who call the Ridge home, The Lost Bus is both moving and meaningful—a reminder of where we’ve been and why the future matters. (No

accountability, and overall buyer protections.

Licensed contractors are regulated by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and must meet strict standards for experience, bonding, and insurance. These builders are accountable for workmanship quality and are subject to state oversight and disciplinary action if problems arise.

Owner-builders, on the other hand, are individuals who construct homes for personal use or resale. While some are skilled and conscientious, their projects generally lack the same oversight or required insurance protections. Buyers must be especially cautious, as owner-built homes may not come with warranties or clear documentation regarding subcontractors and materials.

Recent discussions at the Town of Paradise Housing Advisory Committee highlighted areas for improvement in protecting homebuyers and maintaining construction quality. The committee identified several recommendations:

• Develop clearer contract language identifying builder type.

• Add a section to real estate purchase agreements prompting buyer questions about construction.

• Collect and track complaint data related to new builds to inform policy.

To share the real story of who we are today, the Chamber has released Paradise Today, a short film capturing the beauty, progress, and community spirit that define the Ridge. Produced

by U.T.B. Studios and Emmy Award–winning filmmaker Ev Durán, who also serves as Chamber Vice President, Paradise Today is available on WelcomeToTheRidge.com and ParadiseChamber.com.

Paradise Rising: progress, place, and partnership

Pardon our progress: Paradise in motion

Supporting small businesses is at the heart of the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce’s mission. Progress often brings challenges—and current construction across the Ridge, while a sign of renewal, has made it harder for customers to reach some of our merchants and service providers.

Now is the time to shop local and shop through the cones. A short detour or a few extra minutes of patience helps keep our community’s businesses strong. Every local purchase— whether it’s a cup of coffee, a gift, or a service call— circulates dollars here at home, supporting jobs, families, and the character that makes the Ridge unique.

These are the businesses that sponsor youth sports, donate to local fundraisers, and open their doors for community events. They’ve stood by Paradise through every stage of recovery—let’s stand by them now.

When we shop local, we’re not just making a purchase. We’re investing in the Paradise we’re rebuilding together.

The power of place: Welcome to the Ridge website WelcometotheRidge. com continues to share what makes our community exceptional. Through this campaign, the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce highlights the spirit, creativity, and grit that define life on the Ridge—both for those who live here and those just discovering us.

Much of the Chamber’s work and resources go toward sharing our story with the audiences who need to hear it, visitors, potential residents, and investors who can help shape our future.

Paradise

Greetings everyone. As we enter the fourth quarter, and the second fiscal quarter for the Town, it’s been a busy and productive season with multiple projects in the works.

Business as usual at the Building Department

First, I want to address the rumors surrounding our Building Department. The department continues to operate business as usual—plans are being accepted, inspections are underway, and permits are being issued.

At the direction of Town Council, an audit of the Building Department was conducted to identify areas for improved efficiency and service. Several opportunities for enhancement were found, and we are implementing these measures to better serve our community. To be clear, no functions have been stopped—our goal remains to provide the best possible service to residents and builders.

Health Care Study nearing completion

Another ongoing topic is the Strategic Health Care Study, launched in 2023 as a joint effort between the Town of Paradise and the Adventist Health Feather River Health Foundation. Three formal drafts have been created so far. The most

recent version was tabled by Council to address data corrections—specifically, the number of local students—and to strengthen implementation options for the study’s recommendations.

The study aims to evaluate current health care resources on the Ridge, identify gaps, and explore sustainable ways to improve access and services. Updated findings and recommendations are expected to return to Council in November or December for review and next steps.

Progress in insurance, infrastructure, and undergrounding

Property insurance continues to be a major concern for residents. Recently, I had the opportunity to meet and tour with two insurance companies who visited Paradise at the request of the Rebuild Paradise Foundation: AAA and Delos Insurance Solutions. They saw firsthand the extensive work our community has done to harden the town against wildfire. I believe there is genuine potential for these companies to

expand coverage in our area—a positive step, even if it won’t solve every issue right away.

I also toured the utility undergrounding project currently underway on Pentz Road. This section is particularly challenging—trenches reach nine feet deep and four feet wide, requiring significant bracing. The work is time-consuming and disruptive for businesses, but essential. I anticipate after completion it will benefit the local businesses. By year’s end, most of the undergrounding will be complete, with the exception of Skyway between Wagstaff and Bille and the Neal Road area.

I understand the inconvenience this causes for residents and businesses, and I deeply appreciate everyone’s patience and support. Once finished, these improvements will bring safer infrastructure, modernized utilities, and more attractive public spaces—a lasting benefit to the entire Paradise community.

I offer my personal thanks to everyone for their support, patience and understanding.

TOWN OF PARADISE

Town of Paradise organics program launches in 2026

Call for artists: Beautify Paradise with your art!

The Town of Paradise and the Paradise Art Center are inviting Ridge artists to showcase their creativity by designing artwork for the seven remaining public utility boxes owned by the Town.

Selected artists will receive a $300 stipend upon completion of their design. Submissions are due by December 15, 2025.

For more information and applications, visit the Paradise Art Center (Monday–Friday, 1–4 p.m.) or email Kdysert@pacific.net.

Let’s bring color and creativity to the streets of Paradise—your art could be part of the town’s landscape!

All towns and cities in the State, including Paradise, face stringent solid waste legislation under 2016 State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) which mandated that California reduce organic waste disposal in landfills. Organic waste like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills. As a result, green/yard waste and food waste must be diverted from disposal in landfills and taken to a facility that can process mixed organics and produce recovered organic waste products such as compost, mulch, and renewable energy. These regulations aim to reduce methane emissions in landfills which are the third largest source of methane in California.

Starting January 1, 2026, NRWS will begin the curbside collection of co-mingled organic waste (food waste disposed of in the green waste cart) from Paradise residential and commercial customers. In addition, NRWS will start servicing all carts weekly –no more alternating between green waste and recycling weeks. NRWS’ Paradise customers will be receiving more information about the new organics program and an updated recycling guide in November to show how to properly dispose of food waste starting in January.

For Paradise residents and businesses to come into compliance with this State Law, new organic waste services are necessary, none of which are funded by the State. Therefore, these services must be funded through an increase in the solid waste rates which were adopted through a public hearing process in May 2024. However, there will be opportunities for customers to potentially reduce costs by taking full advantage of the recycling programs available and downsizing their garbage can size. The staff at NRWS are always available to assist with finding the right sized service for your needs.

Effective Monday, October 13, residential burning is now allowed from 6:00 a.m. until dusk with a valid Town of Paradise Burn Permit.

Prior to burning, residents must confirm with the Butte County Air Quality Management District that conditions allow for residential burning. This ensures safe air quality conditions and helps prevent smoke impacts to neighbors.

Town of Paradise considers updates to backyard chicken regulations

The Town of Paradise is moving forward with updates to its backyard chicken ordinance, reflecting growing community interest in self-reliance and sustainable living.

At the September Town Council meeting, members discussed increasing the number of chickens that residents may keep within residential zones and revising existing setback requirements for chicken coops. Currently, Town code allows up to two hens per property, with coops required to be located at least 75 feet from any neighboring dwelling.

Residents spoke in strong support of allowing more chickens, citing benefits such as food security, waste reduction, and local sustainability. Councilmembers noted that many homeowners on the Ridge have embraced backyard gardening and smallscale food production, and expressed interest in updating local regulations to better support that lifestyle while maintaining health and nuisance standards.

Following the discussion, the Council directed staff to prepare an amendment to the Town’s zoning ordinance that would remove the two-hen limit and reduce coop setbacks to 20 feet from neighboring residences. Roosters would remain prohibited, and sanitary maintenance requirements would stay in place.

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on October 21 to review the proposed changes. If recommended for approval, the ordinance will be brought to the Town Council in December, with potential adoption in January 2026, becoming effective 30 days thereafter.

In-home emergency warning alarms now available for hearing and visually impaired

The Town of Paradise is improving community safety by offering in-home emergency warning alarms for residents including those who are hearing or visually impaired. These devices are designed to help ensure that everyone receives timely alerts when the Emergency Warning Sirens (EWS) are activated.

Boosting siren audibility indoors

Many residents have shared that outdoor sirens can be difficult to hear inside their homes. In response, the Town is providing a limited number of plug-in in-home units, free of charge, that provide both audio and visual alerts when the sirens sound.

Sign up to receive a unit

Once the Town gauges community interest, details about distribution will be announced. Those interested in obtaining an in-home unit are encouraged to fill out the online interest form by scanning the QR code or visiting townofparadise.com. Click Recovery, then select Emergency Warning Siren Update—Home Units Interest Form.

• Town of Paradise to create a one-page Buyer Advisory Form requiring both disclosure and an Owner-Builder signature.

• Consider a transfer tax on Owner-Builder sales within one year of the Certificate of Occupancy to discourage speculative flips lacking buyer protections.

Coming Soon: The Paradise New Home Buyer Resource Packet

To further strengthen consumer protection, the Town of Paradise Building Resiliency Center (BRC) is developing a New Home Buyer Packet — a comprehensive guide designed to walk buyers step-by-step through the process after purchasing a newly built home.

This packet will include essential documents, checklists, and practical advice to help buyers understand their rights and responsibilities before or immediately following escrow. REALTORS® should encourage clients to obtain this packet from the BRC and review its contents carefully.

The resource draws on CSLB guidelines and local requirements, ensuring transparency and consistency in new construction transactions across Paradise.

Key components of the Home Buyer Packet include:

• Home Buyer Checklist: A complete subcontractor list (required before final inspection) included in the home’s Operation and Maintenance Manual. It outlines who performed site prep, foundation, framing, systems, and finishes, including contact information and license numbers—so buyers know exactly who to call for warranty issues.

• Licensed Contractor vs. Owner-Builder Comparison Flyer: Summarizes the key differences, highlighting the advantages of purchasing homes built by licensed professionals.

• Tips on Hiring a Contractor: A consumer protection checklist to help buyers verify licenses, request lien releases, and avoid unlicensed or unscrupulous builders.

Best Practices for Buyers and REALTORS®

For buyers, diligence is the best defense. Conduct a final walkthrough before closing, verifying that work is complete and up to standard. Review all documents in the Home Buyer Packet and ask questions about anything unclear. Confirm contractor credentials, review warranty coverage, and keep thorough records of all correspondence and agreements. This attention to detail helps prevent misunderstandings and provides a clear path for resolving postpurchase issues.

For REALTORS®, education is key. Agents are often a buyer’s first and most trusted source of information. Discuss builder types early in the home search process, reference the Home Buyer Packet, and direct clients to verify contractor licenses through the CSLB. For owner-built homes, emphasize the importance of disclosures and the proposed Buyer Advisory Form to ensure full understanding of potential risks.

If concerns arise after purchase, buyers can file complaints directly with the CSLB online or by calling (800) 321CSLB. For license history or verification, contact the Northern Region office at (916) 255-4041.

Building Confidence and Resilience

Purchasing a newly constructed home in Paradise is more than a real estate transaction—it’s an investment in the future of a community defined by resilience and renewal. By understanding the distinctions between licensed contractor and owner-builder projects, buyers can protect their investment and enjoy peace of mind. REALTORS® can strengthen that confidence by equipping clients with the right resources and encouraging

Together, through education, accountability, and collaboration, the Ridge continues to rebuild stronger, smarter, and safer than ever.

For more information, visit the Building Resiliency Center or explore resources at townofparadise.com/ building.

Licensed Contractors vs. Owner-Builders

These differences are especially relevant in Paradise, where rebuilding emphasizes resiliency features like fire-resistant materials, defensible space, and energy-efficient systems. Homes built by licensed contractors—often through established construction firms—offer structured warranties and predictable quality. Owner-built homes, while sometimes more affordable or customized, carry greater risks due to fewer regulations and less accountability. By learning the distinctions and leveraging community resources, both buyers and REALTORS® can play an active role in ensuring Paradise’s homes—and its future—are built to last.

Be a ‘Holiday Hero’ in 2025: Brighten the season for Ridge kids and families

The holidays should be filled with warmth and joy, but for many families, they bring added stress. At Boys and Girls Clubs of the North Valley, we’re working to change that, and you can help.

Thanks to generous community members like you, we’ve been able to offer families support without barriers, paperwork, or judgment. Every coat, gift card, and act of kindness reminds our kids they are seen, valued, and not alone.

“Turkey Time” returns, serving hundreds of club families

Our annual Thanksgiving tradition returns November 18th at Terry Ashe Park, serving hundreds of Club members and their families a warm, festive meal. It’s one of the most beloved events of the year, bringing joy, connection, and comfort to our community.

Ways you can make a difference this holiday season

2. Adopt-A-Kid (or a few!) - 57 kids are hoping for a brighter holiday - your support can make it magical.

3. Gift Cards for Families — help families shop for food, gas, and essentials.

Paradise Police Officers’ Association hosts annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ event

The Paradise Police Officers’ Association (POA) is once again hosting our annual Shop with a Cop event, and we are seeking the community’s support to make it a success.

This program gives members of the Paradise Police Department the opportunity to meet local children and take them shopping for Christmas gifts—for themselves and for their families. Each child is nominated by their school.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we are able to bring joy and hope to several children across the Ridge during the holiday season. This event would not be pos-

sible without your donations and partnership.

We invite you to contribute to this program and together we will brighten Christmas for local kids. Every contribution, large or small, makes a meaningful difference.

On behalf of the POA and the children we serve, thank you for your support. As an agency this is one of our most rewarding days of the year.

Wildfire mitigation & insurance on the Paradise Ridge

The Rebuild Paradise Foundation (RPF), with support from the North Valley Community Foundation, First Northern Bank, and Assemblymember James Gallagher, recently hosted a landmark forum on insurance, wildfire resilience, and the power of collective mitigation. The event featured leading voices from CAL FIRE, the Town of Paradise, IBHS (Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety), Mercury Insurance, and the California FAIR Plan, bringing science, policy, and local action together to help Ridge residents understand how mitigation translates to insurability.

Mitigation is working and insurers are taking notice

Homes that meet today’s building standards and maintain strong defensible space are starting to see better insurance opportunities.

While Mercury Insurance is no longer writing policies in Paradise, their initial 200 policies for well-mitigated homes helped demonstrate that riskreduction efforts matter. Mercury has since expanded into Magalia, where they are writing new policies for newly constructed, stick-built homes with defensible space.

Other insurers are now beginning to recognize and reward mitigation measures as they assess the potential to return to the Ridge. Fully mitigated homes may qualify for significant premium discounts, and participation in Firewise USA neighborhoods can add additional savings. The takeaway: consistent, communitywide mitigation remains the clearest path toward more insurance options.

The science behind safety: IBHS in focus

Alistair Watt, Chief Product Officer at IBHS, shared insights from the organization’s cuttingedge research lab, where engineers build and burn full-size homes to understand how materials and designs perform against wildfire, wind, and hail.

This research powers the Wildfire Prepared Home program, which certifies homes that meet rigorous mitigation standards, turning a homeowner’s effort into measurable proof of low risk.

cants within the Camp Fire footprint.

Paradise now leads the nation in adoption, with 73 homes certified and more underway, supported by a local grant refunding the first 100 application fees. The process is simple: apply at wildfireprepared.org and schedule an inspection. Watt emphasized that the biggest challenge remains Zone 0, the first five feet around a home kept free of combustibles. “People think doing 80% is enough,” he said. “But embers find the 20% you miss.”

As RPF Executive Director Jen Goodlin put it, “Zone 0 is the new seatbelt. You may not love it, but it saves homes.”

A grant that rocks: Rebuild

Paradise’s local innovation

Goodlin and RPF Vice Chair Casey Taylor highlighted the organization’s Defensible Space Grant, which provides $200–$500 in gravel to qualified appli-

Dozens of homeowners have completed the upgrade, including Jeanie and James, who used the grant to finish mitigation, qualify with a standard carrier, and save roughly $4,000 per year after leaving the FAIR Plan.

Goodlin’s message to homeowners was clear: Zone 0 isn’t about punishment, it’s about power. Homeowners can maintain beauty and greenery by relocating plants, using pots, and getting creative outside the five-foot buffer.

FAIR Plan: Safety net, not a destination

Philip Irwin, Broker Liaison for the California FAIR Plan, explained how the state’s “insurer of last resort” works, and why its rapid 400% growth since 2018 reflects both a crisis and an opportunity. The plan covers fire, smoke, explosion, and vandalism, but not theft, water damage, or liability (which require a separate policy).

New mitigation discounts are expected

in late 2025, rewarding defensible space and fire-resistant construction. “There are thousands of dollars of difference between brokers for the same property,” Irwin said. “Shop around.”

He praised Paradise as a model of organized recovery: “What you’ve done here is extraordinary. You’re setting the pace for the rest of the state.”

The Road Ahead: Resilience as an economic strategy

Goodlin closed with a reminder that no single measure will solve the insurance puzzle, but together, they already are. “We can’t change our hazard,” she said. “We live in a high-risk zone. But we can change our risk, and that’s what this community is doing.”

For Paradise, Magalia, and neighboring communities, the message is clear: mitigation isn’t just about safety, it’s an economic strategy. With coordination, science, and shared commitment, the Ridge is not only rebuilding but redefining what a resilient community looks like.

Representatives from Mercury Insurance joined the Rebuild Paradise Foundation to support community education on insurance and share recovery resources.

PUSD Superintendent Betsy Amis takes the helm at PUSD

Paradise Unified School District (PUSD) proudly welcomes Betsy Amis as its new Superintendent. A dedicated educator and long-time district leader, Amis has served PUSD for the past 23 years in nearly every facet of public education, including roles as an elementary teacher, academic coach, assistant principal, principal, district consultant, and Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Compliance. She has also contributed to the profession as a university supervisor at California State University, Chico.

Amis began her educational journey at California State University, Chico, earning her undergraduate degree before completing her teaching credential at the University of California, Irvine. She launched her teaching career in the Irvine Unified School District, then returned north to Paradise Unified, where she has since built a legacy of leadership, resilience, and service to students and families. She later earned a master’s degree in education focused on Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Learners, along with her California Administrative Services Credential.

As Superintendent, Amis leads with a focus on high-quality teaching and learning, safe and supportive campuses, strong partnerships with families and the greater community. This work, she believes, is essential not only to student success but to restoring confidence,

rebuilding enrollment, and helping bring families and economic vitality back to the Ridge.

Deeply rooted in the Paradise community, Betsy is honored to lead PUSD at a pivotal time of rebuilding and renewal. She believes that strong public schools are essential to attracting families back to the Ridge and to creating a thriving, futureready community. In 2024, she was named ACSA District Administrator of the Year, and in 2025, she completed the ACSA Aspiring Superintendents Academy. She now leads with integrity, inclusiveness, and a student-centered vision for educational excellence.

Paradise Police Department and Paradise Unified School District welcome new school resource officer

The Paradise Police Department (PPD), in partnership with the Paradise Unified School District (PUSD), is proud to introduce the community’s new School Resource Officer (SRO)—a dedicated position created to ensure a safe, supportive, and connected learning environment for students, staff, and families across the Ridge.

The SRO will serve as a consistent presence on PUSD campuses throughout the school year, assisting with school safety, student well-being, and schoolrelated events. While the SRO will primarily serve PUSD campuses, the program is designed to support schools and youth services across the Ridge.

The goal is to strengthen the bridge between students, schools, and law enforcement. By having an approachable, trusted officer on campus, we can build lasting relationships, foster open communication, and create a positive climate where students feel safe and supported.

The School Resource Officer will act as a liaison between the police department and the school community, assisting with safety planning, offering guidance to students, and providing resources to families.

Both PPD and PUSD share a commitment to youth development, proactive community policing, and cultivating a strong, safe school climate. The launch of the SRO Program reflects that shared vision.

For more information about the School Resource Officer Program, please contact the Paradise Police Department at (530) 872-6241.

Protect your home this winter

Quick action tips to prevent frozen pipes

If you think you may have frozen pipes or your faucets are not flowing normally, do this immediately to reduce potential water damage:

• Close main water shut-off valve ASAP and before temperatures go above freezing.

• Have towels and buckets to prepare if the pipes are frozen.

• Open all faucets inside and outside and drain remaining water from pipes.

Avoid frozen water pipes!

• Slowly turn water back on. Inspect for leaks. Turn water off immediately if you see one.

• Check attics and crawl spaces for leaks also.

• Don’t use torches or heat guns to quickly thaw pipes– a fire hazard!

• Listen and watch for leaks as temperature comes above freezing.

• Call a licensed plumber for pipe damage repairs.

Here’s what to do before cold weather

• Know where your main water shutoff valve is before an emergency.

• Be sure backflow device is covered with insulating frost bag supplied by PID when installed. Missing? Call PID (530)877-4971

• Close exterior vents, crawl spaces, and doors to prevent cold air from freezing water pipes.

• Identify and insulate water pipes at risk of freezing.

• Going away? Keep on minimum heat. Open bathroom and kitchen lower cabinets exposing pipes to warmer air. Let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes.

The new Paradise Animal Shelter is now open!

After 20 years of planning and fundraising, the dream of a new Animal Shelter in Paradise has finally become a reality! Our new shelter is open and fully functional—something we can all be proud of.

We now have two buildings. The original structure has been remodeled into the canine housing unit, complete with new kennels, quarantine rooms, and supply storage. The newly constructed building includes the reception area, offices, meet-and-greet room, exam and treatment room, and feline housing. The beautiful cat condos, built by Paradise Woodworks, feature an indoor/ outdoor ‘catio’ where cats can enjoy free play.

Come see for yourself (and maybe meet your new best friend!). The shelter is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Stay tuned for the announcement of our official Grand Opening date.

A legacy grows: Foothill Mill & Lumber adds new warehouse

Foothill Mill & Lumber has been a cornerstone of Paradise construction for more than 70 years, with the Ely family proudly at the helm for over 55 of those years. What started as a modest lumber planing mill has grown into a full-service lumber yard, expanding in step with the evolving needs of the Ridge community it serves.

Then came November 2018. In a single day, the business lost everything—the hardware store, reman plant, planing mill, sawmill, and all equipment. “It took weeks just to get into town to assess our loss,” said owner Marshal Ely. “But I knew I had to reopen to help support the community I loved. Paradise is my home—it’s where I went to school, built my home, and raised my family.”

With determination and the help of a few original employees, Ely

Coyote Ridge Mercantile – a new chapter on the Ridge

Joan Davis, owner of Coyote Ridge Coffee, has expanded into retail with Coyote Ridge Mercantile, opening November 1st. Located at 797 Elliott Rd., Suite E in Paradise, the shop will transition over the holiday season from Buffy’s Gift Barn, continuing its mission of offering meaningful gifts and locally made goods.

The Mercantile brings together handcrafted items from regional artisans, gourmet foods, specialty coffee, and thoughtfully selected local products. Guests are welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee while they browse. While not a conventional café, The Mercantile offers a welcoming environment where guests can enjoy a cup coffee fostering moments of connection and discovery. For every bag of coffee sold, $0.50 is donated to The Rebuild Paradise Foundation to support continued recovery and community growth.

began clearing the yard. Armed with two trash cans, a piece of plywood, and a laptop, Foothill Mill started selling materials again—handwriting receipts and delivering with a pickup truck. The community’s response was overwhelming. “Customers, old and new, came in thanking us for being here. I knew I made the right decision,” Ely said.

Since reopening, Foothill Mill & Lumber has expanded its inventory and is ready to open their new warehouse. The business continues to adjust to meet local needs and stay competitive. Their goal is to be competitive and keep tax dollars in Paradise.

“For me, healing from the fire means being here talking with our customers and watching our community grow,” Ely shared.

Atherton & Michael Law Office returns to Paradise

For more than three decades, attorney Christian “Chris” Atherton has been a familiar presence in the Paradise legal community.

Drawn to the Ridge’s smalltown spirit, he settled here in 1989 and opened his law office in 1995. Over the years, he built lasting relationships with generations of local families, guiding them through some of life’s most important decisions.

The 2018 Camp Fire brought devastating loss, including the destruction of the long-established office. Atherton remained committed to his clients, quickly relocating to Oroville to ensure uninterrupted service. With more than 30 years of experience in estate planning, wills, trusts, and estate administration, Atherton is now returning his practice to Paradise, a community he never stopped calling home.

Working alongside him is Amy Michael, whose story is equally rooted in Paradise. Michael’s parents moved to Paradise in 1979, and she grew up in the town she still calls home.

A graduate of Paradise High School’s Class of 1998, she continued her education at Butte College and Chico State before devoting her early years to raising her daughter, Fayth, whom she adopted through foster care.

In 2018, Michael joined Atherton’s office as a legal assistant while beginning law school at Cal Northern School of Law in Chico. Balancing family, work, and studies, she advanced to paralegal before graduating, passing the bar, and becoming a partner in the newly formed Atherton & Michael, LLP. Today, she serves local families in estate planning and related matters with both professional expertise and a lifelong bond to Paradise.

The practice also includes paralegal Dana Nelson, who joined in 2024. Nelson brings both skill and warmth to her role, strengthening the firm’s commitment to compassionate service.

Together, Atherton, Michael, and Nelson represent more than a law office—they are neighbors and advocates, dedicated to helping Ridge families plan with trust and care.

Community

Wonderful news—the Paradise Community Center is now complete! The once-lost Senior Center, destroyed in the Camp Fire, has been beautifully reimagined into a modern, welcoming facility designed to serve the entire Ridge community.

The new building features a grand entrance, fire-safe landscaping, and solar power, blending safety, sustainability, and style. Inside, guests will find a spacious main hall that can be divided to host large gatherings, smaller rooms for meetings and activities, and a fully equipped commercial kitchen ready for community events and celebrations.

This milestone is the result of more than six years of dedication, planning, and perseverance. The Paradise Community Center (PCC) Board is proud to gift this facility to the Paradise Recreation and Park District (PRPD), who will manage, maintain, and share it with the community.

PCC President Connie Wilhite expressed her gratitude and pride in the team who made it possible: Cheryl Habriel, Vice President; Bill Hopman, Secretary; Jan Keller, Treasurer; Mike Shores, Director; and Doug Runkle, Director. “It has been my honor to work with this group,”

Wilhite said. “A special thank you to each of you for your time and devotion to this project. We did this for the Town of Paradise and the surrounding communities on the Ridge.” Paradise Community Center 877 Nunneley, Paradise (530) 321-6303. Paradisecommunitycenter@yahoo.com

Repairs bring new life to Paradise Veterans Hall

Built in 1927, the Paradise Veterans Memorial Hall has long stood as a gathering place for veterans and the community. Although the Hall’s sturdy bones have helped it endure nearly a century, time has recently taken its toll.

Last year, a small hole discovered in the stage floor revealed widespread dry rot. A subsequent inspection by Butte County in March 2025 found additional dry rot in a major beam supporting the kitchen floor. Out of caution, the county “red tagged” the stage, kitchen, and Blue Room to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.

The closure left many local groups scrambling. The American Legion Post 259, which regularly feeds the California Army National Guard in Oroville, was forced to pause operations. Several longtime users of the hall were left without a home for their events.

Fortunately, community members rallied. Former mayor and councilman Ron Lassonde worked tirelessly with Butte County and Paradise officials to navigate the permit process for temporary repairs. With help from David Lemire and his daughter Claire, damaged areas were opened for inspection by Rancho Engineering, which developed a plan with contractor Ron Hawkins.

A temporary structural fix was approved and, on October 2, 2025, the kitchen officially reopened. The final stage and kitchen repairs are expected later this year.

Special thanks go to Donn Thomson for milling new stage boards and to local supporters—including Janice Thrash of the Paddy Wagon and Lupita of Mi Rancho—for raising funds to keep the Hall’s legacy alive.

Paradise Farmers’ Market grows new commercial building

Heinke’s Paradise Farmers’ Market, located on 5505 Skyway, is adding an 1,800 sq. ft. commercial building bringing together small businesses, fresh produce, and community spirit. The property features three spacious commercial suites, each with its own ADA-compliant restroom and inviting storefront. Its prime location next door to Paradise Town Hall offers excellent visibility to both locals and visitors traveling through Paradise, making it an ideal setting for thriving small businesses.

Owners Terran and Janelle Heinke continue a proud family tradition— offering beautiful plants and gardening advice you can trust.

This charming building will be home to the Ridge’s premier plants & produce nursery, where customers can explore a wide variety of plants, succulents, and locally grown goods. Whether stopping by for fresh-picked produce, unique plants, or just to enjoy a friendly smalltown atmosphere, this building will stand as a cornerstone of community life along the Skyway. On market days, the property comes alive with the sights and sounds of local vendors, live community connections, and the unmistakable energy that makes Paradise such a special place to live and shop.

Paradise Reflections: A creative comeback with deep local roots

Do you remember the building that began as a photo mat store? It’s seen many great local businesses over the years, and now it shines again as Paradise Reflections, a new creative space opened by longtime resident Carrie Max.

A family legacy of creativity and community

Carrie moved to Paradise in 1969 when her parents bought and restored a 100-yearold building that had once been a stage stop, turning it into a hip craft store on Bille Road. Later, they opened the Wildwood Inn (now the Cozy Diner), where she watched her mother, Thea Max, sew uniforms for the entire staff and transform the space for every occasion and holiday—instilling in Carrie both a love for creating beauty and a deep sense of connection with her community. Carrie and her father, Ron Max, also ran The Brunch House before she left to raise a family. Carrie’s been back on the Ridge for over ten years now, reconnecting with her roots.

A Place to Create, Connect, and Dream

Recently opened, Paradise Reflections features the unique work of local artists, focusing on garden art --from floral bouquets and yard décor to playful creations like chicken coops and cows. She envisions it as a place where community, creativity, and joy come together.

Visitors can drop by to browse or simply

sit and chat. Soon, Green Paradise will add healthy, delicious food to the mix. Carrie has also started a Barter Book, inviting residents to share skills and support one another.

COMMUNITY HONOR ROLL

Paradise Art Center rededicates gallery in honor of Kathleen Dysert Paradise

The Paradise Art Center (PAC) has rededicated and renamed its main gallery in honor of longtime president Kathleen Dysert, recognizing her 15 years of leadership and service to the community. The Almond Road facility on Almond Street, formerly known as Wheeler Gallery, is now officially Dysert Gallery.

The dedication was celebrated at two August events: the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce mixer and later at the Visions and Verses Fine Arts Show reception. On both occasions, PAC President Greg Sanchez praised Dysert for her lasting contributions.

The Paradise Art Center has renamed its main gallery in honor of longtime president Kathleen Dysert. It is now officially called the Dysert Gallery.

the utility box art wrapping project throughout Paradise.

The Paradise Ridge community has once again shown the true meaning of generosity and unity by surpassing its fundraising goal during the 15th Annual Independence from Hunger Food Drive. Together, with the help of local partners and shoppers, $42,288 was raised, exceeding the original goal of $40,000.

This incredible achievement placed the Paradise Grocery Outlet as the top fundraising store in the nation, outperforming more than 519 other stores across the country participating in the campaign.

“Kathy deserves this recognition,” Sanchez said. “She led this organization from financial instability to a vibrant gathering place to gather pre-fire. Postfire she did her greatest work, expanding outreach to a smaller community, raising membership to record highs, and helping the Art Center become a healing place for the community.”

Dysert was also instrumental in rehabilitating the facility; we would not be where we are today without her dedication. She continues to lead PAC’s Community Outreach program and recently completed Phase One of

Her efforts extend beyond PAC, as she has served on multiple community boards and remains an active advocate for local arts. “She is a warrior for the art community and for Paradise in general,” Sanchez added. Our gallery is a perfect place to remember her contributions.

In her comments at the dedications, Dysert downplayed her own role in the success of the organization, thanking board members she has served with and the membership for making the Paradise Art Center what it is. She is grateful for the opportunities Paradise Art Center has given to her and the community.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity of our customers and the partnership of local businesses who matched donations throughout July,” said Wayne and Livia Kurtz, Independent Operators of Paradise Grocery Outlet. “Many customers made special trips just to donate; it was truly inspiring to witness this level of commitment to our community.”

The success of this campaign would not have been possible without the support of many local business partners, who matched customer donations and fueled the momentum:

All donations raised through the

Paradise location remain 100% local, directly benefiting community food pantries.

This campaign is part of Grocery Outlet’s national Independence from Hunger initiative to combat food insecurity, which continues to impact over 34 million Americans. With rising inflation and economic strain, the need for community-driven efforts like this is more important than ever.

About Grocery Outlet

Founded in 1946, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market is a high-quality, extremevalue retailer with independently operated locations across the U.S. Each store is deeply rooted in its community, with operators like Wayne and Livia Kurtz leading the way in giving back.

Paradise Grocery Outlet was named top fundraising store in the nation during July’s Independence from Hunger Food Drive. Owners Wayne and Livia Kurtz thank their staff and community for their commitment and contributions.

Hope Plaza: A lasting tribute to Paradise’s strength and resilience

After nearly seven years of fundraising and overcoming setbacks, Hope Plaza is finally a reality — a lasting gift to the Paradise community. In the earliest days after the Camp Fire, makeshift memorials appeared across the Ridge, underscoring the need for a permanent place of remembrance. Hope Plaza was born from that need — a compassionate space to honor lives lost, recognize the heroes who responded, and celebrate the community’s enduring spirit.

Designed as a symbol of healing and unity, the plaza offers a tangible source of comfort and reflection. It acknowledges the importance of storytelling in recovery — the power of sharing experiences, connecting with others, and making sense of loss.

Understanding this, actor Jamie Lee Curtis and the team behind Apple TV’s The Lost Bus selected Hope Plaza to express gratitude for allowing them to tell Paradise’s story. Their contributions, along with support from the North Valley Community Foundation, Otto Construction, Rebuild Paradise Foundation, The Law Offices of Larry Buckley, the Dan Kennedy family, Golden Valley Bank, Joe Early, and many others, helped bring the vision to life.

Intentionally named, Hope Plaza stands as a beacon of appreciation, celebration, and inspiration. It is to be a place of reflection that honors how we, the residents of Paradise, met this moment of tragedy with profound courage and resilience. It reminds us of how we were unified at that moment in time and how we persevered through unthinkable challenges. Hope Plaza celebrates our milestones and victories, demonstrates our immense gratitude to our ‘helpers,’ and inspires others to join us in moving forward.

To Appreciate – To Celebrate – To Inspire.

Local business owners gathered recently to learn how 3CORE helps small businesses in reaching their goals. The presentation, led by 3CORE Relationship Manager, Dan Zuno, and business mentor Ron VanDusen, offered a behind-the-scenes look at what entrepreneurs can expect when they partner with the agency.

As the Economic Development District for Butte, Tehama, and Glenn counties, 3CORE plays a vital role in helping businesses start, grow, and thrive. From securing working capital to offering technical assistance or guidance for new business ventures, 3CORE focuses on one key question: “How do we get to YES?”

“When we meet a new client, we start by asking what their goals are,” explained Zuno. “Whatever that looks like, we want to connect them with the right resources to help them achieve success.”

Through collaboration with community partners

and one-on-one support, 3CORE provides the tools entrepreneurs need to overcome challenges and build stronger local economies. Whether launching a startup or expanding an existing business, 3CORE stands ready as a trusted resource for small business owners across the region.

Guests enjoyed a hearty dinner and dessert before dancing the night away to the soulful sounds of Big Mo & The Full Moon Band, whose performance lit up the vineyard with joy and laughter. North State Economic Development Conference: celebrating 26 years of innovation and progress in the North State

Each year, the Center for Economic Development, part of the Northstate Planning and Development Collective at California State University, Chico, brings together key decision-makers from industry, government, and education to address the most pressing issues in economic development for the North State.

This year’s 26th Annual Economic Development Conference will feature presentations addressing Food Security, Tourism, Workforce, and more. At the time of publication, the program remains under development.

The event will feature economist Dr. Robert Eyler, who will present his annual economic forecast. Dr. Eyler is the President and Head of Research at Economic Forensics and Analytics and the Dean of the School of Extended and International Education at Sonoma State University. He also serves on

Republican candidate for Governor Chad Bianco visits

In September, the Ridge Republican Women Federated Club was honored to welcome Republican Candidate for Governor Chad Bianco to the Paradise Elks Lodge for an engaging and inspiring evening. Bianco, currently serving as Sheriff of Riverside County, spent nearly three hours speaking to a packed room about the challenges facing California and the solutions he envisions for the state’s future. What stood out most was his message of “putting people over politics.” Throughout his remarks, Bianco emphasized his commitment to restoring public safety, improving affordability, strengthening education, and addressing homelessness with compassion and accountability. He went far beyond campaign talking

the boards of Redwood Credit Union, a nonprofit financial cooperative, and SommSelect, a wine curation company. An accomplished author, Dr. Eyler has written extensively on topics such as economic sanctions, the wine industry, and monetary economics. The conference will also include ample networking opportunities, making it a catalyst for ongoing discussion, collaboration, and action throughout the year. The event takes place on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in the Bell Memorial Union at CSU Chico. Event includes breakfast, lunch and end of day networking reception For ticket information, visit ParadiseChamber. com’s online community calendar. Following the event, I had the opportunity to take a flight with Chad, courtesy of local pilot JT Martin, to show him the burn scar from the Camp Fire and the ongoing impacts of vegetation management across the Ridge and valley below. It was encouraging to see his genuine interest in our community’s recovery and future resilience.
