REFUNDS: Refunds will be given only if cancelled by 3 p.m. the day following the first class session. Classes of four meetings or less must be cancelled one business day prior to the first class. Activity Guide - Spring/Summer 2022 DISTRICT MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Spring 2022 Kicks Off A seedling trying to weave its way to the surface, I was not sure how to kick off my Spring message. I though I’d lead off with a poem on spring, but had only a bare root phrase of a line from Walt Whitman, so I went down the easter bunny rabbit hole of quotes on the internet and found a perfect one for parks and recreation within seconds:

Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’ – Robin Williams This seems like a fitting way to kick off our Spring – Summer 2022 Activity Guide, while this guide is COVIDpruned from what we had in the past, it still is blossoming with a lot of familiar and new offerings.

In winter, I plot and plan. In spring, I move. – Henry Rollins Our staff has plotted and planned all winter and now it’s time for the community (not just punk rockers) to move. You can move to ballet, basketball, camps, martial arts, hiking, pinewood derby, softball, tai chi, tennis, track and field, yoga and more.

Our District is fully embracing stewardship of Paradise Lake and offering fishing, kayaking (community paddles, lessons, and reservations for rentals), and even clean up days to enjoy this beautiful jewel.

While we had a great season last year at the Paradise and Concow Pools, we look forward to an even better season this year.

With generous partners, the District has scholarships for families to get the kids out to enjoy a busy spring and summer.

Following a busy Ice Rink season, we have a lot of events such as movies and music. I also wanted to invite everyone to join us on June 4th for the ceremonial ground breaking to kick off the planning and development of Lakeridge Park in Magalia. Please check with our staff or website for details.

YOUTH PROGRAMS LITTLE BALLERS BASKETBALL

YOUTH SPORTS TRACK AND FIELD CONDITIONING This program will introduce and familiarize children to the sport of track and field. We will practice running, throwing, long jumping, and basic fitness training. Each class will typically include stretching, warm-ups, running, jumping or throwing, and discussion. Children should meet at the Paradise High School Track by 4:25 pm with a water bottle, light jacket for cool weather, and a face mask. In the event of rain, the class will be rescheduled.

Instructor: Recreation Staff Dates: Thursdays, April 21 – May 26, 4:30 – 5:30 pm Location: Paradise High School Track Ages: 7-12 years. Fee: $45

This beginning basketball program will introduce boys and girls in 1st through 4th grade to the sport of basketball. Emphasis will be on skill development, athletic awareness, and learning the fundamentals of the game. Smaller basketballs and hoops may be used to aid in learning.

JUDO The sport of Judo is a traditional Japanese martial art that teaches the principals of duty, honor, discipline, responsibility, and respect. It will teach the student body awareness and control through rolling, falling, throwing, and grappling. With the training of Judo you will gain confidence, physical fitness, and skill.

DRONE R/C CAMP

This class is for the child who is interested in learning more about horses and how t take care of them. Participants will learn safety around horses, the parts of a horse and saddle, how to halter and tie a horse, brushing and grooming horses, and beginning horseback riding. Most of the class will not be riding horses.

Does your youngster enjoy flying drones or radio controlled cars? Then this is the camp for them! Participants will learn the science behind the fun while flying state of the art drones at several Paradise Parks while gathering media for their end of the week project presentations. Participants will also design and drive state of the art indoor RC cars for hours each day!

ARCADE ZONE/SOCIAL CLUB This drop-in program will allow classmates from Magalia and Paradise a chance to interact with their peers in a positive environment. Students will build social skills while participating in video game play and other activities.

MLB- PITCH, HIT AND RUN Major League Baseball and Paradise Recreation and Parks District are sponsoring a Pitch, Hit and Run competition. Do you think you, or your child can Hit the furthest, Pitch the fastest, or Run the quickest? Come and see who is the best on the Ridge in this age group competition.

Each group winner will receive an award for being top in their age group.

Each winner’s times and distance will be sent into MLB and will be eligible for moving forward to a regional competition. The finals of this competition across the nation will be held at the World Series of 2022.

This trauma and resiliency informed day camp will visit several program providers in the Outdoor Education for All partnership in order to experience standards-based activities that meet a series of Healing Trauma Through Nature initiative goals.

This program is designed to provide a varied and exciting experience for children 3-5 years. Activities will enhance socialization, assist in building self-confidence, and provide some educational experience. Children will participate in crafts, games, circle time, sharing, creative play, and other activities. Each session will have different planned activities. Children must be 3 years old and potty trained by the first day of class.

The low stress mindful movements of Tai Chi increase balance, flexibility, body awareness, health, and strength. In this slow-moving class students will build a good foundation and understanding of the Yang short forms choreographed body postures. This class is well suited for beginning students and for fine tuning the more advanced student. The instructor is a student of grand master Sam Tam.

TIKES GET BIKES—BIKE DONATION AND RACE

Bring your little one out to take their pick from our inventory of refurbished bicycles. Some have training wheels, some are ready for the mountain, all are ready for fun and exercise! After they have their new ride they can take it for a spin on the hard surface path at Bille Park.

PICKLEBALL Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States and PRPD has three outdoor courts available for all ability levels. Pickleball is a fun and lively game that is easy to learn. It is played on a badminton sized court with special paddles and a plastic ball. PRPD will be offering dropin times two days a week. Some paddles and balls available to use. Rain will cancel the program.

ADULT PROGRAMS CONT. ADULT SOFTBALL LEAGUES These recreational slow pitch softball leagues are geared for the adult softball enthusiast of all skill levels. There will be a Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Ed league offered. Leagues will be planned for 12 games and an end of the season playoff tournament. League structure will be dependent on number of teams interested.

DROP IN SOFTBALL On four Sundays PRPD will open the field for open softball. Each day individuals may show up and play. The director will coordinate batting practice or scrimmage structured games, dependent on the amount of people who show.

BATTLE ON THE RIDGE WOMENS TOURNAMENT Time to bring tournament softball back to the Ridge. This ongoing Paradise tradition had been going 16 years prior to the Camp Fire and it’s time to bring it back to the Ridge. This will be the second of three softball tournaments scheduled. This will be the Battle of the Chic’s weekend.

Structure of this tournament to be determined by instructor by tournament date.

Enjoy the twilight sunset and the still waters of Paradise Lake while connecting with fellow community members and kayaking enthusiasts.

PRPD has a small fleet of beginner and advanced skill level kayaks for single paddlers and pairs of paddlers to rent. Please contact staff prior to event date if you plan to rent a kayak for the paddle.

Time to bring tournament softball back to the Ridge. This ongoing Paradise tradition had been going 16 years prior to the Camp Fire, and it’s time to bring it back to the Ridge. This will be the second of three softball tournaments scheduled. This will be the Men’s weekend. Structure of this tournament to be determined by instructor by tournament date.

Join HRCB President Walt Schafer for an information event that will teach participants about the rebuilding progress of the famous Covered Bridge. From columns, foundation, to abutments and slope projection, there is plenty to see at this event.

POLAR PADDLEFEST

Launch your kayak into the cool Spring water in Paradise Lake for an on -the-water poker race! Participants will travel all over the lake as they gather playing cards and enjoy the spectacular views of this hidden jewel on the Ridge. With opportunities to “win” with both the best time and the best playing card hand, there will be no shortage of fun for this inaugural event. Single and Double teams will compete independently, no paddle boards or sail boats, please. Must obey all lake regulations for kayaking safety (Personal Floatation Device, Paddle, Kayak). Don’t have Instructor: Recreation Staff a kayak? Let us know – we can rent you one for the day.

Ages: 14 years and OLDER Fee: $25 per person Join PRPD for this long running fishing tradition at Paradise Lake. The lake will be stocked with hungry trout, and the event will also include raffles, prizes, food, and drinks. Only youth ages 3-15 years are permitted to fish with parental supervision. Proceeds raised through donations and concessions will be used to purchase fish for the following year’s event. The lake will be closed the week before Kid’s Fishing Day.

GOLD NUGGET CRAFT FAIRE

This 43rd annual craft faire will feature a variety of crafts from all over Northern California and beyond. Food and entertainment will also be featured during the event. Applications for food and craft booths are available at the PRPD District Office or online at Paradiseprpd.com. Be prepared to follow COVID-19 rules including face masks and social distancing if needed.

EASTER FUN

LAWN GAME OLYMPICS Held in the Upper Bille Park meadow, this day of lawn games will give your entire family and friends a chance to compete in the classic lawn games; potato sack races, cornhole, lawn darts, the three legged race, frisbee toss, the egg race, “beer” pong, and slacklining. Sign up your whole crew to enjoy some friendly competition in the sunshine at the park.

AT LAKERIDGE PARK

Join PRPD and community members as we celebrate the groundbreaking at Lakeridge Park in Magalia. This event will allow for community input on updated park features and proposed layout, celebration of the award for the $5.2 million grant that funds the park, and a short community social to introduce key organizations partnering in this project.

AQUATICS SWIM CLASS LEVELS

DOLPHIN

PARENT & TOT~ Ages: 6 months through 2 years

(LEVELS 4, 5, & 6)

6/1 Patron/Instructor Ratio (Parent / Child) This course is designed for parents interested in acquainting their children with the water in a safe and fun environment.

Parents are directly responsible for their child’s instruction while under the guidance of a certified instructor.

SALAMANDER Ages 2 years to 8 years

6/1 Patron/Instructor Ratio Children will increase their stamina by swimming 3-4 laps as they continue to develop the front and back crawl. They will be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke.

More advanced swimmers (Level 5) will continue to refine their skills, concentrating on form and efficiency. The butterfly kick and basic turns are introduced.

Also more advanced swimmers (Level 6) will refine their front and back crawl, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Instructor will emphasize butterfly and work on increasing child’s stamina.

(LEVEL 1) Children will be introduced and made comfortable with being in the water PRIVATE LESSONS in a fun environment. Children need to be over 36” tall.

One on One instruction for all levels age 3 and over. Eight lesson sessions are concurrent with group lessons.

6/1 Patron/Instructor Ratio Swimmers that need assistance going long distances or can swim short way across the pool. Children who are comfortable in the water will begin to learn to swim and float independently. More advanced children will continue to refine the basic front and back crawl. Participants will be introduced to deep water diving skills.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING This Red Cross certified course is for those interested in becoming a lifeguard. The course will include Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/ AED for Lifeguards, and First Aid for Public Safety Personnel.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR HEATHER BROWNLEE Meet Heather Brownlee the 2021 Volunteer of the Year!

She is a leading example of an environmental steward through her volunteer efforts with Paradise Recreation and Park District. She has been a Paradise resident for over 35 years and in her retired free time joins us out in the parks. Heather has volunteered at every park, helped both maintenance and recreation departments, accumulated the most hours past the 50-hour club, and has taken on leadership roles. Her love and passion for the ridge is shown through her can-do attitude and man it is contagious!

Big shout out to Heather for joining the army it takes to rebuild the ridge.
