Readers Letters RE: Italmoda Closing Advertisment December 2019/January 2020 It is with a certain sadness that I read the adfrom Marco Rondina about the closing of Italmoda. We immigrated to Montreal in 1959.

We rented a small upper flat on Drolet near Jean-Talon. My mom a few years later began to frequent a small “hole in the wall” clothing store on Jean Talon and Henri-Julien. At the time it sold small items and I believe that they were mostly for children. My mom became one of the first and regular customer of Italmoda.

Marco, his wife, Eddo, his children and staff became a constant in our lives. I eventually moved to Toronto in ‘85 but my visits to Montreal to see the family most always included a visit to Italmoda at Plaza St-Hubert. I guess in many ways they were our second family.

They have outfitted me for every special major occasion and the not so special occasions.

Allora, signor Marco, grazie tanto e ti auguro un felicissimo futuro.

RE: The Queen and I, by Pal Di Iulio Spring 2020 Your editorial was very interesting, and of course, a personal opinion. I am not a monarchist, but I greatly appreciate our parliamentary system of government. If we were to change and become a republic, I would still want the system of a Head of State (being one person, and the role that goes with it, as many countries in the world have) and then a Head of Government (being another person with the role that goes with it). That for me would be a solution I could vote for in a referendum or whichever way we Canadians would transition from a monarchy to a republic. It is not always successful when one person wears both hats; not everyone can personify a nation with dignity and be the leader of the same nation on a day-to-day basis. I wish you and your staff all the best and much success.

I have also been saying for as long as I can remember (I’m 65) that it’s time to stop being a Dominion (basta) and finally become (officially) an independent nation. I’m not saying to erase the past, but let’s build our own identity and future. The only thing is that, at my age, I probably won’t be around to see it happen. P.S. I don’t think having Gilles Vigneault on our bills is a good idea considering his position on Canada.

Email to info@panoramitalia.com March 31, 2020 I know that is may be a strange message but a sincere one. I have a 14-year-old special needs daughter. Her fine motor therapy is to tear paper in order to strengthen her grip and hand functions.

The only magazine that she will touch is Panoram Italia. We have always gotten them from our local grocery store, pharmacy and we would be able to take 10-15 at a time, as they are aware of Olivia’s situation. During this crisis and her being home from school, we are not able to find old issues, we have asked friends and family to keep and provide us with what they have, but we are running short. We ask if it would be possible for you to provide her with old issues that you would in turn recycle or throw away, we are willing to pay for delivery if we cannot pick some up. I am asking as a desperate mom for your help. If you cannot, I understand and wish you all health and safety during this crucial time in our lives.

Facebook post April 3, 2020 Anyone who knows Olivia, knows that her passion and therapy is to tear apart Panoram Italia magazines. So, I decided to reach out to Panorama and sent them an email. I must say that within 10 minutes I received a reply back from Adam Zara who told me to go to their offices to pick up as many back issues as I wanted. My husband went to meet with him this morning, from a distance of course, and was given over 200 past issues. We were also told that they would continue to provide Olivia with the past issues. There are truly some very special people out there, and I’ve always learned that if you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

EDITORIAL Awaiting a Renaissance On

a return flight from Toronto’s Pearson airport this past February, I was sitting contently after having directed a successful shoot for our summer issue cover, which was a nod to the upcoming Euro 2020. The photos reflected the joy and excitement of finally being able to cheer on the Azzurri, following their much-reviled absence from World Cup 2018.

In mid-March, just as our ADAM ZARA newly revamped spring issue Executive Editor was being mailed out to readers adamzara@panoramitalia.com across Canada, federal and provincial officials implemented forced closures and stay-at-home measures, along with which came the suspension of all cultural activities and sporting events. Our summer cover would have to be shelved until further notice.

And here we are, three months later. By now, most of you have become experienced banana bread bakers, seasoned pizzaioli, fresh gnocchi masters and work-from-home multitaskers. You’ve probably stood in line for toilet paper and have felt disgruntled when your online grocery order arrived with half the items missing, including flour. You’ve also likely celebrated Easter and Mother’s Day on a Zoom video call and perhaps watched Sunday mass on Facebook Live.

For others, this pandemic was anything but a time to sit back and smell the proverbial roses. Loved ones were lost, businesses dwindled along with stable jobs and the emotional and physical well-being of our healthcare workers suffered a serious blow. The overwhelming wave of COVID-19 cases in Montreal’s long-term care centres exposed abhorrent, systemic flaws.

Many felt that Mother Nature was speaking to us—that globalization and the frantic pace of our movements, communications and technology, coupled with a bottomless consumer culture, was all coming to a head.

In this issue, we paint a portrait of what transpired during the pandemic from the perspective of Canada’s Italian community and the Italian peninsula, which tragically was the world’s epicentre for far too long.

From my personal perspective, as someone who has been involved with a family-owned and operated business my entire teenage and adult life, my heart goes out to all employers and employees who have truly struggled during this time.

Vesuvio Pizzeria, run by the Pugliese family for 63 years, permanently shut down in April. Arguably Toronto’s very first pizzeria, it disputed this title with Camarra’s that closed in 2019 for unrelated reasons. A month later, it was 60-year-old College Street institution Il Gatto Nero’s turn to shutter. The Raviele family addressed its patrons on social media: “We could never have expected the impact that COVID-19 would have on Il

Gatto Nero.” Hundreds of dismayed commenters reminisced about the numerous family gatherings and momentous occasions celebrated in the Little Italy restaurant throughout the decades.

In May, Montreal’s Little Italy merchants were involved in a skirmish with city hall over a proposed plan by Mayor Valérie Plante’s administration that would have seen Boulevard Saint-Laurent, between Saint-Zotique and Jean-Talon, turned into a pedestrian mall and bike path. An online petition was launched by outraged merchants, who decried that hundreds of parking spaces would be removed in an already congested artery, thereby exacerbating the impact of their then two-month-long closures. Over 6,000 signatures were gathered and, following pressure from city councillors like Francesco Miele and the Petite Italie merchants’ association (SDC), the mayor backed down and kept the street open to vehicular traffic.

While business and the economy drive us, family and health undeniably matter most. Over 7,000 Canadians, 33,000 Italians and nearly 400,000 worldwide (as of early June) perished due to this invisible enemy. Condoglianze go out to the families left behind, many of whom were unable to say their final goodbyes or bury their loved ones who passed because of COVID or otherwise.

Wakes and funerals are never occasions we look forward to, but the therapy derived from gathering with friends and family to commemorate the lives of patriarchs, matriarchs and other cherished individuals is essential to the grieving process. We know how being deprived of this especially hurts for members of our community.

Allow me to mention the passing of two community leaders during this period, albeit unrelated to the pandemic: president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada, Emmanuel Triassi (Montreal), as well as business executive and philanthropist Frank Ciccolini Sr. (Toronto). As with many who have left us during this time, memorial services are postponed until restrictions on gatherings are lifted.

If there’s one thing we can count on throughout history, it’s that humanity adapts and rises from the ashes following pandemics, economic depressions and periods of great distress. Let us be vigilant during this pre-vaccine era and do our part in mitigating or avoiding a second wave.

scorso febbraio, su un volo di ritorno dall’aeroporto Pearson di Toronto, me ne stavo felicemente seduto dopo aver diretto un ottimo servizio fotografico per la copertina della nostra edizione estiva, una fervida attesa del campionato Europeo 2020.

Le foto rispecchiavano la gioia e l’emozione di poter finalmente tifare gli Azzurri, considerata la tanto umiliata assenza ai Mondiali 2018.

A metà marzo, subito dopo aver inviato la nostra edizione primaverile, appena aggiornata, ai nostri lettori di tutto il Canada, i funzionari federali e provinciali hanno messo in atto misure di chiusura forzata e di confinamento, seguite dalla sospensione di tutte le attività culturali e degli eventi sportivi. La nostra copertina estiva veniva rimandata fino a nuovo ordine.

Ed eccoci qui, tre mesi dopo. Oggi, molti di voi sono diventati esperti pasticceri di bananabread, pizzaioli navigati, maestri di gnocchi freschi e esperti di multitasking in remoto. Avete probabilmente fatto la fila per la carta igienica e siete rimasti contrariati quando mancava la metà dei prodotti, farina compresa, dalla spesa ordinata online. Avete anche festeggiato Pasqua e la Festa della Mamma con una videochiamata su Zoom e forse avete assistito alla messa domenicale sulla live di Facebook.

Per altri, questa pandemia non è stata altro che un momento per fermarsi e guardare il lato positivo delle cose. Sono venute a mancare delle persone care, gli affari e i lavori stabili hanno subito un calo, lo stato emotivo e fisico degli operatori sanitari sono stati messi a dura prova. L’incontenibile ondata di casi di COVID nei centri di lunga degenza di Montreal ha messo in evidenza aberranti lacune del sistema.

Molti hanno ritenuto che Madre Natura ci stesse comunicando qualcosa. Che la globalizzazione e il ritmo frenetico dei nostri spostamenti, delle comunicazioni e della tecnologia, unitamente a una cultura consumistica senza fondo avessero superato ogni limite.

In questa edizione, offriamo un ritratto di ciò che è emerso durante la pandemia dalla prospettiva della comunità italo-canadese del Canada e della penisola italiana, divenuta tragicamente epicentro mondiale decisamente per troppo a lungo.

Per quel che mi riguarda, in quanto coinvolto in un’azienda a conduzione familiare durante tutta l’adolescenza e poi in età adulta, il mio affetto è rivolto a tutti i datori di lavoro e impiegati che hanno vissuto grosse difficoltà in questo periodo.

In aprile, la Pizzeria Vesuvio, gestita per 63 anni dalla famiglia Pugliese, è stata chiusa per sempre. Probabilmente la prima vera pizzeria di Toronto, si contendeva questo titolo con Camarra’s Pizza chiusa nel 2019 per ragioni non correlate. Un mese dopo, è stato il turno de Il Gatto Nero, un’istituzione di College Street per 60 anni. La famiglia Raviele si è rivolta ai propri clienti sui social media: “Non ci saremmo mai aspettati l’impatto che il COVID-19 avrebbe avuto su Il Gatto Nero.” Centinaia di affezionati hanno lasciato un commento costernati, hanno rievocato le numerose riunioni familiari e le occasioni importanti celebrate nel corso degli anni nel ristorante di Little Italy.

A maggio, i commercianti della Little Italy di Montreal si sono scontrati con il Municipio a causa di un progetto proposto dall’amministrazione della sindaca Valérie Plante che voleva trasformare Boulevard Saint-Laurent, tra Saint-Zotique e Jean-Talon, in una zona commerciale pedonale e in un percorso ciclabile. È stato lanciato un sondaggio online dai commerciati indignati, che criticavano il fatto che sarebbero stati rimossi centinaia di parcheggi in un’arteria già congestionata, aggravando pertanto l’impatto di quei, all’epoca, due lunghi mesi di chiusura. Sono state raccolte più di 6.000 firme e a seguito delle pressioni dei nostri consiglieri cittadini come Francesco Miele e l’associazione dei commercianti di Petite Italie (SDC), la sindaca ha fatto retromarcia e ha lasciato la strada aperta al traffico veicolare.

Sebbene le attività commerciali e l’economia siano il nostro motore, sono la famiglia e la salute ciò che indiscutibilmente conta di più. Oltre 7.000 canadesi, 33.000 italiani e quasi 400.000 persone in tutto il mondo (fino a questo giugno) sono morti a causa di questo nemico invisibile. Le condoglianze vanno alle loro famiglie, molte delle quali

non hanno nemmeno avuto la possibilità di salutare i propri cari per l’ultima volta o seppellirli, per morti legate al COVID o ad altro.

Le veglie funebri non sono mai un’occasione tanto attesa, ma la terapia che ne deriva dal riunirsi con gli amici e i familiari per commemorare le vite dei patriarchi, delle matriarche o di altre persone care, è fondamentale nel processo di elaborazione del lutto. Siamo ben consapevoli di quanto l’esserne stati privati danneggi i membri della nostra comunità.

Consentitemi di menzionare la perdita in questo periodo di due leader della comunità, seppur non legata al COVID: il Presidente della Camera di Commercio in Canada, Emmanuel Triassi (Montreal), nonché l’imprenditore e filantropo Frank Ciccolini senior (Toronto). Così come per le molte persone che ci hanno lasciati in questo periodo le cerimonie commemorative sono state posticipate fino all’abolizione delle restrizioni inerenti agli assembramenti.

In tutta questa storia, se c’è una cosa sulla quale possiamo fare affidamento, è che l’umanità si adatta e risorge dalle ceneri che seguono alle pandemie, alle depressioni economiche e ai periodi di grandi difficoltà. Siamo cauti in questa fase prevaccino e contribuiamo a mitigare o evitare una seconda ondata.

Auguro a tutti voi un bell’Italian Heritage Month e di trascorre un’estate in salute.

In the Age of Coronavirus Ce la dobbiamo fare!

ublishing a magazine such as Panoram Italia is planned months in advance. By March of this year, our editorial team realized that many of the already prepared stories and features were no longer appropriate given the current situation. So we started over to include stories that reflect the present “Age of Coronavirus”.

Praise, prayers, respect and gratitude to all frontline warriors: paramedics, police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, caregivers, hospital cleaners, grocery store employees, business leaders, ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things and politicians. They are all fighting the war against the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused Canada, Italy and indeed the world to doubt, tremble, almost stop and hopefully think.

The popular inspirational hashtag #celafaremo—and my extra time at home thinking about what was, is and what will be—caused me to somberly reflect on life and suggest another hashtag, one that conveys more amore, sacrificio, sudore and urgency: #celadobbiamofare. We must for the sake of our loved ones, neighbours, nation and indeed the planet.

Those of us who are post-war babies and now retirees (or almost) might remember the stories of sacrificio of our nonni and parents

during World War II and afterwards, not to mention their get-up-and-go courage to sail cross the Atlantic Ocean to start over from scratch. Some of us, fueled by 2M our love and desire to give our children everything that our parents, nonni and we never had, may have forgotten to tell them these stories of self-denial and living within our means captured in this Italian proverb: “Non fare il passo 2M più lungo della gamba”.

This reminds me of my late parents (Peppino and Filomena) who, after living in their comfortable semi-detached home with a fruitful backa yarda, decided to move into an independent seniors’ apartment at age 80.

My father was a rather industrious, resourceful, jack-of-all-trades man who had held many jobs, and on weekends helped many neighbours with cantinas and giardini during his 60 years in Canada. He had been in the Italian army and was a prisoner of war in Germany for three years, where he was forced to work in a munitions factory. Upon being liberated by the American army, he and a dozen other Italian soldiers walked over 1,000 kilometres back to the northern Italian border, carrying backpacks weighing 50 kilograms.

After being debriefed, the group, mostly from Central Italy, took a train to Pescara. Once there, they found that the train tracks and infrastructure had been bombed by the Germans from Ortona East along the Gustav Line and they had to again walk hundreds of kilometres to their paesi scattered in the Apennines of Abruzzo and Molise.

Immigrating to Canada in 1956 at Christmas time, my father found a job in construction by the Epiphany (early January) and managed to change jobs but always kept employed with one or more part time side jobs until he retired at 70. He rode the streetcar for the first 10 years in Canada and purchased a house before a car or a television set. He never went to Florida, only to New York or Montreal for weddings and funerals. During his summer holidays, he transformed a Wasaga Beach

summer shack into a two-bedroom winterized cottage. He did eventually vacation in Italy one summer and once visited the Holy Land.

This is my family’s story, which may not be too different from most of your ancestors’ experiences.

When some of my parents’ relatives and neighbours found out that Peppino and Filomena decided to move into a small, humble apartment without a garage, cantina or giardino, they asked him, “Peppino, you had a nice house, you were always so busy working and keeping your relatives fed with your giardino, how could you now live in such a small apartment?” His immediate, resolute answer was: “Ce la dobbiamo fare.”

He had foresight. He understood his age and the times, and was preparing for his future with the same passion, sudore and sacrifice that led him through 90 years of life.

Are we, or are our children—who have benefitted by standing on the shoulders of our parents’ or nonni’s sacrifices—ready, willing and able to rekindle this spirit of sacrifice and help rebuild our neighbourhoods, nations and the world after this Coronavirus is defeated? It may take years to return to some yet unknown normal. A future without the endless expectation of at least a 2% annual growth in the economy may be challenging. Are we willing or able to live without the lifestyle to which we have grown accustomed? This new lifestyle may prove less “business as usual” with less restaurants, travel, vacations, sports and fewer employment opportunities as the economy rebuilds itself.

Our nonni and parents lived better lives because they sacrificed with humility, hard work and lived within their means while dreaming of a better tomorrow for their families. Can we?

Ce la dobbiamo fare! Ce la faremo. We have no choice.

Be well. Keep safe. Be kind. Wash your hands, wear a mask and respect social distancing.

A marzo di quest’anno, il nostro gruppo editoriale ha realizzato che molte delle storie e degli articoli già preparati non erano più adatti considerata la situazione attuale. Quindi abbiamo ricominciato da capo, per includere storie che rispecchiassero l’attuale “Era del Coronavirus”.

Elogi, preghiere, rispetto e gratitudine verso tutti i guerrieri sul fronte: paramedici, poliziotti, vigili del fuoco, medici, infermieri, accompagnatori sanitari, inservienti ospedalieri, impiegati dei supermercati, imprenditori, cittadini ordinari che compiono gesti straordinari, e politici. Lottano tutti nella battaglia contro la pandemia del COVID-19 che ha costretto il Canada, l’Italia e di certo il mondo, a dubitare, tremare, quasi a fermarsi e magari a riflettere.

Il popolare hashtag motivazionale #celafaremo — e il mio tempo extra a casa pensando a cosa è stato, a cosa è e a cosa ne sarà — mi hanno portato a riflettere mestamente sulla vita e a suggerire un altro hashtag, uno che trasmetta più amore, sacrificio, sudore e urgenza: #celadobbiamofare.

Dobbiamo farcela per il bene dei nostri cari, dei nostri vicini, della nazione e certamente per il pianeta.

Chi tra noi è figlio del dopo guerra ed oggi è in pensione (o quasi) dovrebbe ricordare le storie di sacrificio dei nostri nonni e genitori durante e dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, per non parlare del loro coraggio di prendere ed andarsene attraversando l’Oceano Atlantico per ricominciare da capo. Alcuni di noi, alimentati dall’amore e dal desiderio di dare ai nostri figli tutto ciò che i nostri genitori, nonni e noi stessi non abbiamo mai avuto, abbiamo forse scordato di raccontare loro quelle storie di abnegazione e di quel vivere con i propri mezzi espresso dal proverbio italiano: “Non fare il passo più lungo della gamba”.

Mi fa pensare ai miei compianti genitori (Peppino e Filomena) che a 80 anni e dopo

aver vissuto nella loro comoda bifamiliare con un bell’orto fruttuoso, decisero di trasferirsi in un appartamento indipendente per anziani.

Mio padre era un tuttofare abbastanza industrioso e pieno di risorse, che aveva fatto molti lavori e che, nel corso dei suoi 60 anni in Canada, nei fine settimana, ha aiutato molti vicini con le loro cantine e i loro giardini. Era stato nell’esercito italiano ed era stato prigioniero di guerra in Germania per tre anni, dove fu costretto a lavorare in una fabbrica di munizioni. Una volta liberato dall’esercito americano, assieme ad una decina di militari italiani percorse a piedi più di 1000 chilometri fino al confine settentrionale italiano, con uno zaino di 50 chili sulle spalle. Dopo essere stato interrogato, il gruppo, per lo più dell’Italia centrale, prese un treno per Pescara. Una volta arrivati, scoprirono che le rotaie e le infrastrutture della ferrovia erano state bombardate dai tedeschi da Ortona est lungo la linea Gustav, e di nuovo dovettero percorrere a piedi centinaia di chilometri fino ai loro paesi sparsi sugli Appennini dell’Abruzzo e del Molise.

Immigrato in Canada nel 1956 nel periodo di Natale, per l’Epifania (i primi di gennaio) mio padre trovò lavoro nelle costruzioni e riuscì a fare più lavori ma mantenendosi sempre impegnato con uno o più lavoretti part time finché a 70 anni si ritirò in pensione. Prese il tram per i primi 10 anni in Canada primi 10 anni in Canada e comprò una casa prima ancora che una macchina o una televisione. Non andò mai in Florida, solo a New York o a Montreal per matrimoni e funerali. Durante le sue vacanze estive, trasformò una baracca estiva a Wasaga Beach in una casa di villeggiatura con due stanze e adatta all’inverno. Infine, un’estate andò in vacanza in Italia e una volta visitò la Terra Santa.

Questa è la storia della mia famiglia, probabilmente non tanto diversa dalle esperienze dei vostri antenati.

Quando alcuni dei parenti o vicini dei miei genitori scoprirono che Peppino e Filomena

avevano deciso di trasferirsi in un modesto appartamentino senza garage, cantina o giardino, gli chiesero: “Peppino, avevi una bella casa, eri sempre impegnato a lavorare e a sfamare i parenti con il tuo orto, come fai a vivere adesso in un appartamentino così piccolo?” Immediatamente rispondeva risoluto: “Ce la dobbiamo fare.”

Era previdente. Era consapevole della sua età e dei tempi, e si stava preparando al futuro con la stessa passione, sudore e sacrificio che gli avevano fatto vivere 90 anni di vita.

Siamo noi o i nostri figli — che abbiamo tratto beneficio reggendoci sui sacrifici dei nostri genitori e nonni — pronti, volenterosi e capaci di ravvivare questo spirito di sacrificio e di ricostruire i nostri quartieri, le nostre nazioni e il mondo una volta sconfitto il Coronavirus?

Potrebbero volerci anni per ritornare a una normalità ad oggi sconosciuta. Un futuro senza la costante aspettativa di una crescita economica annuale almeno del 2% potrebbe essere difficile. Siamo disposti o capaci di vivere senza quello stile di vita al quale ci siamo abituati crescendo? Questo nuovo stile di vita potrebbe rivelarsi meno “tutto come al solito” con meno ristoranti, viaggi, vacanze, sport e meno opportunità di lavoro man mano che l’economia si riprende.

I nostri nonni e genitori hanno vissuto vite migliori perché si sono sacrificati con modestia, impegno e hanno vissuto con i propri mezzi mentre sognavano un futuro migliore per le loro famiglie. Riusciamo a farlo?

Ce la dobbiamo fare! Ce la faremo. Non abbiamo scelta.

Statemi bene. State al sicuro. Siate gentili.

Lavatevi le mani, indossate la mascherina e rispettate il distanziamento sociale.

Coraggio.

Pace e bene.

How Italian-Canadians have weathered life in lockdown Come gli italo-canadesi hanno affrontato la vita in lockdown

“Growing up, no one else I knew had two kitchens and a cantina except Italians. These are memories I want to hold onto as my grandparents get older. The cantina signifies abundance.”

And this abundance has proven quite convenient during a global pandemic: “Every time I drive by my nonna’s house to say hi, she has bags of biscotti and tomato sauce waiting. I don’t understand where she’s getting her supplies. She’s not going grocery shopping, so I wonder if she has a secret stash,” laughs Lanni. “It just always baffles me.”

Fernando Marcantonio is also trying to focus on the positive these days. As the owner of a popular men’s hair salon in Montreal, he usually spends 12 hours a day trimming hair and talking sports and politics with his clients. After being forced to shut down for three months, hair salons have been given the green light to open on June 15. But the lockdown was no picnic for the hair stylist: “When you wake up in the morning and you have nowhere to go, it really messes with your mental state,” explains Marcantonio. “I was doing a lot of daddy duty, washing windows, cleaning out the garage and taking one day at a time.”

Marcantonio also kept himself—and his many clients—sane by posting tips and videos on social media on how to groom your own hair at home. “The salon was closed, but a lot of people were still going to work everyday or doing a lot of videoconferencing from home and they needed to look presentable.”

The veteran men’s hairstylist spent several hours a day guiding clients through online virtual haircuts. “It’s a lot of fun watching wives cut their husbands’ hair. They’ve accepted that it’s not going to be perfect, they just want to look decent.”

Marcantonio says his FaceTime haircut business was a huge hit with desperate clients who wanted to spruce up their appearance while respecting physical distancing measures.

anda Marcella Labricciosa is an 85-year-old widow who lives by herself in midtown Toronto. In pre-pandemic times, her days were filled cooking for family, visiting with friends and participating in activities at the local Italian community centre. She would get her hair and nails done every two weeks. Once strict social distancing and lockdown measures were implemented in Ontario in mid-March, the senior was forced indoors, spending her days watching the news on RAI and stockpiling pasta and potatoes. “I have two refrigerators, one freezer and a cantina, and it’s still not enough,” says Labricciosa. “I’m a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother.

I need to feed all my family. I also stocked up on flour so I could make my own pasta.”

Labricciosa’s daughter, Mary Grace, was going on weekly grocery runs for her mother. “If you wanted to come to my mom’s house to do your grocery shopping, she had enough food for everyone,” jokes Mary Grace.

Although this grandmother of eight is rarely without a healthy supply of pantry staples and canned goods, she did find herself missing her family and friends terribly during the early days of lockdown. “I felt very alone and sad,” admits Labricciosa, who filled the void with frequent FaceTime calls to her grandkids and great-grandkids. “It makes you realize what is important in life.”

Giovanni Lanni has come to a similar realization. The 34-year-old photographer made use of the forced down time to go through thousands of images he hadn’t had time to edit until now. “This has been a nice pause. We’re always moving so fast, stores are always open, there’s always traffic. It takes me back to when I was a kid and stores were closed on Sundays and you just spent time at home appreciating what you have.”

“It was wonderful and it kept me really busy,” says the hairstylist. “People even offered to pay me, but I wouldn’t accept it. We’re all in this together and this is my way of giving back. The reward at the end is the relationships I am building.”

Comedian Massimo Cannistraro also used his lockdown time as an opportunity to make the most of his presence on social media. The funnyman posted hilarious almost-daily videos of his life in quarantine, which he spent at his mother’s house in Montreal. “It’s kind of funny because I felt like I was the parent. One day my mom wanted to go out, and I told her she couldn’t. The roles reversed. She was going a little bit crazy just sitting at home.”

Cannistraro says he’s also surprised at just how productive he has been during this pandemic: “The one thing that I’m very shocked about is that I’ve not been incredibly drunk every day. I thought I’d be doing a lot more drinking,” laughs the 43-year-old.

Instead, the comedian has been focusing on honing his skills through his numerous online videos and sketches, as well as brushing up on his baking skills: “I made this crazy four-layer cake. It was covered in chocolate frosting and layered with chocolate, strawberry jam and peanut butter. It was awesome.”

With large public gatherings still being limited in much of the country, it’ll be a while before Cannistraro will be able to perform in front of a live audience again. Although there are many aspects of his pre-pandemic life he misses, such as the connection and energy he gets from performing in front of a live audience, Cannistraro says he is determined to make the best of a tough situation. “I find humour in everything—I think that’s just how a comedian’s mind is wired. You can be sad and depressed about this situation, or you can be happy. At the end of the day, I’m alive, I’m breathing, so there are definitely things to be happy about.”

Si faceva fare i capelli e le unghie ogni due settimane. Una volta che a metà marzo sono state implementate rigide misure di distanziamento sociale e il lockdown in Ontario, la signora è stata costretta a stare al chiuso, trascorrendo le sue giornate a guardare le notizie sulla RAI e ad accumulare pasta e patate. “Ho due frigoriferi, un congelatore e una cantina ma comunque non bastano,” afferma Labricciosa.

“Sono madre, nonna e bisnonna. Devo sfamare tutta la mia famiglia. Ho anche fatto scorta di farina così potevo fare la pasta da me.”

La figlia di Labricciosa, Mary Grace, settimanalmente andava a fare la spesa per la madre. “Se venivate a fare la spesa a casa di mia madre, aveva cibo a sufficienza per tutti,” scherza Mary Grace.

Sebbene questa nonna di otto nipoti ha una buona scorta di prodotti immancabili in una dispensa e di alimenti in scatola, ha sentito tantissimo la mancanza della propria famiglia e degli amici, soprattutto nei primi giorni

di lockdown. “Mi sono sentita molto sola e triste,” ammette Labricciosa, che ha colmato il vuoto con frequenti chiamate su FaceTime con i suoi nipoti e pronipoti. “Ti fa rendere conto di cosa sia importante nella vita.”

Giovanni Lanni è arrivato a una conclusione simile. E questa abbondanza si sta rivelando piuttosto conveniente durante una pandemia mondiale: “Ogni volta che passo in macchina da casa di mia nonna per un saluto, ha sacchetti di biscotti e salsa di pomodoro ad aspettarmi. Non capisco dove si rifornisca.

Anche Fernando Marcantonio sta cercando di concentrarsi sull’aspetto positivo di questi giorni. Proprietario di un grande salone per capelli per uomo di Montreal, di solito trascorre 12 ore al giorno a tagliare capelli e a parlare di sport e politica con i suoi clienti. Dopo essere stati costretti a chiudere per tre mesi, i saloni di parrucchieri hanno avuto il via libera per aprire il 15 giugno. Ma il blocco non è stato una vacanza: “Quando la mattina ti svegli e non hai dove andare, ci si sente davvero disorientati,” spiega Marcantonio. “Ho fatto molti lavori da papà. Ho lavato finestre, pulito il garage e vivevo un giorno alla volta.”

Marcantonio dice che la sua attività da parrucchiere su FaceTime andava parecchio bene e che trascorreva varie ore al giorno ad aiutare i clienti disperati a tagliarsi i capelli da soli. “È stato meraviglioso e mi ha tenuto davvero impegnato,” sottolinea il parrucchiere. “Le persone si sono persino offerte di pagarmi ma non ho accettato. Siamo tutti sulla stessa barca e questo è stato il mio modo di ricambiare. La ricompensa finale sono i rapporti che sto coltivando.”

Anche il comico Massimo Cannistraro ha utilizzato il tempo dell’isolamento come un’opportunità per sfruttare al massimo la propria presenza sui social media. Il comico ha postato quasi ogni giorno video esilaranti sulla sua vita in quarantena, che ha trascorso a casa della madre a Montreal. “È in un certo modo divertente perché mi sono sentito come se fossi io il genitore. Un giorno mia madre voleva uscire e le ho detto che non poteva. Si sono invertiti i ruoli. Il solo fatto di starsene a casa la stava facendo impazzire un po’.”

Cannistraro dice di essere quasi meravigliato dalla propria produttività durante questa pandemia: “Una cosa di cui sono molto sorpreso è di non essere stato completamente ubriaco ogni giorno. Pensavo che avrei bevuto molto di più,” ride il 43enne.

Invece, il comico si è concentrato ad affinare le proprie capacità attraverso i numerosi video e sketch online, così come a rispolverare le

proprie abilità di pasticciere: “Ho anche preparato una torta a quattro strati. Ero coperto di cioccolata, di marmellata di fragole e di burro d’arachidi. Era fantastico.”

Passerà ancora un po’ di tempo prima che Cannistraro possa esibirsi di nuovo davanti a un pubblico dal vivo. A Day in the Heart of the Lockdown Lisa Ariemma is a journalist, researcher, educator and activist focusing particularly on issues linked to participatory citizenship, active democracy, migration and the environment. Meana di Susa, provincia di Torino, Piemonte Sunday, March 22, 2020: Day 13 of the lockdown esterday was the first day of spring and the most tragic yet in terms of number of deaths: nearly 800 in 24 hours. At the same time, small wonders are occurring.

For the first time in a long while, white swans have returned to the lagoons of Venice, and the air in the Po River Plain, which stretches from the Province of Turin to the Adriatic Sea and is the most polluted in Europe, is cleaner than it’s been in years.

The terms of our national confinement have become more stringent as police and soldiers have continued to fine thousands of Italians for breaking the rules, and hospitals across northern Italy are near collapse. As of yesterday, we can no longer go for solitary walks or do outdoor sports. Parks and playgrounds are closed and, apart from food and pharmaceutical shopping and health or essential visits, we can only move a maximum of 200 metres away from our homes. Rumour has it that students will not return to school until next September. As of tomorrow, only essential businesses will remain open. My husband, who works with one of the main international Italian brands, has been home since last Monday and will now be off work until April 3.

He has been doing the shopping, and I must say I feel anxious every time he goes out of the house now. I think back to one of my last shopping trips, when I began coughing in a supermarket and found myself telling the people who bolted away from me that it was

simply saliva gone the wrong way mid-cough.

Few people were wearing masks then. Today basically everyone does, often the homemade variety as medical ones are impossible to come by. The other day I found a half bottle of disinfectant to wash my husband’s re-useable mask with and we poured some out very parsimoniously. It has taken on the value of liquid gold.

Flashes of life this past week: the dog barking as if there were someone outside the gate and all of us running to see if there was somebody there, painfully aware of the fact that we are no longer used to people coming over; a friend who works in Tunis flying out of Rome and just before reaching Tunisian air space being re-routed back to Italy; a monetary donation from Italian Buddhists and a mobile hospital from American Evangelists; and Eastern European countries seizing Chinese masks destined for Italy.

Information for making donations to fight the COVID-19 crisis circulates across social networks and flashes across the television screen after newscasts. All channels broadcast public service announcements outlining the rules of comportment. Advertising on TV has changed as well. A car company says you can order their new brand automobile online and a bank declares their support in the anti-COVID cause and encourages viewers to follow the rules.

Government announcements use famous actors, sports figures and musicians to encourage young people to stay at home, while musicians continue to play and sing, authors do readings and actors recite live online.

I realized towards the end of the week that I’d used up my adrenaline in an effort to keep things as normal as possible for my family and had to take a step back and simply rest.

On Friday evening we had a three-way Skype call with friends in our town and in Padua.

We laughed and recounted the silly and the serious. The value of technology in keeping us connected is overwhelming, and I speak to my family in Canada every day wondering when we will be able to hug each other again.

There are moments when I am paralyzed by the horror of what is occurring around me, and others when I thank the universe we are in this still safe cocoon together. I’m also aware that most other news has simply ceased to be reported: the war in Syria, the thousands of refugees and migrants trapped at the border between Greece and Turkey and so much more.

All sorts of conspiracy theories are starting to circulate regarding the causes of the virus as well as how the pandemic is being managed, and politicians sometimes still persist in conducting ideological warfare on one another, as do Italian citizens on their social media. Stepping outside of ideology and recognizing the value of a positive act regardless of the political

stripe of who is carrying out that act is a difficult feat in this highly divided country. Despite this, in the face of a desperate appeal for 300 doctors to assist in the most infected regions, thousands of medical personnel responded to the call.

Sometimes, it has not been easy for me to live in Italy: for its contradictions, its organized anarchy and the profound ugliness that co-exists with its incredible beauty. But in this difficult moment, what probably sparked the breathtaking art, music and architecture, philosophical brilliance and cutting-edge style and technology, that which formed Italy’s socio-cultural fabric, is coming to the fore and making me proud of the Italian DNA passed on to me from my father’s side.

I’ve started watching only the evening news so my day can flow relatively peacefully. I’m waking up often at night and having trouble falling back to sleep. The world around us is catching up. Countries like Spain, France and the United States are beginning to reach our number of cases and are creeping closer to our death rate. Hopefully, other nations like Canada will have acted in time to avoid the pain of what we are living: the military in the streets, trucks carrying away the bodies that local mortuaries can no longer accommodate and healthcare workers losing their lives to the virus.

As I write, I feel the heat of the flames in the fireplace and listen to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday who are regularly interrupted by the joyous singing of birds outside. I am trying to seize these moments, to recognize the beauty in the details and appreciate their exceptional nature. We have planted radish, pea, basil and lettuce seeds and have begun painting the exterior of our house. Yesterday, we spent the morning planting potatoes and onions in the plots of land we’ve cleared this year for our garden. This afternoon at three we have a rendezvous in the dining room. I will make banana bread and as we eat our afternoon snack over a cup of tea, we will all have a go at drawing something chosen by my younger daughter. Some days are longer than others, but we are filling them as creatively and constructively as we can, waiting for this terrible moment to end.

Le direttive del nostro confinamento nazionale sono diventate più rigide così la polizia e i militari hanno continuato a multare migliaia di italiani per aver infranto le regole, e gli ospedali di tutto il Nord Italia sono prossimi al collasso. Da ieri, non possiamo più passeggiare in solitaria o fare attività sportiva all’aperto. I parchi e i parchi giochi sono chiusi e, negozi di alimentari, farmacie, visite mediche o essenziali a parte, ci possiamo spostare al massimo di 200 metri da casa. Si vocifera che gli studenti non torneranno a scuola fino al prossimo settembre. Da domani, solamente le attività essenziali rimarranno aperte. Mio marito, che lavora per uno dei principali marchi italiani internazionali, è a casa dallo scorso lunedì e non lavorerà fino al 3 aprile. È lui che si sta occupando della spesa e devo ammettere di provare adesso una certa ansia ogni volta che esce da casa. Ripenso ai miei ultimi acquisti, quando ho cominciato a tossire al supermercato e mi sono ritrovata a dire alle persone che si allontanavano di fretta da me che mi era semplicemente andata la saliva di traverso. Allora in pochi indossavano le mascherine. Oggi praticamente tutti e, spesso,quelle fatte in casa, perché quelle professionali sono impossibili da trovare.

L’altro giorno ho trovato mezza bottiglia di disinfettante per lavare la mascherina riutilizzabile di mio marito e lo abbiamo usato con molta parsimonia. Ha raggiunto il valore dell’oro liquido.

Informazioni per fare donazioni per combattere il COVID-19 circolano in tutti i social e spuntano sullo schermo del televisore subito dopo i notiziari. Tutti i canali mandano in onda comunicazioni di servizio indicando le norme di comportamento. Anche le pubblicità in televisione sono cambiate. Una compagnia d’auto dice che si può ordinare il loro nuovo modello online e una banca dichiara il proprio sostegno alla causa anti-COVID e incoraggia gli spettatori a seguire le regole. Gli annunci del governo ricorrono ad attori famosi, personalità dello sport e musicisti per incoraggiare i giovani a rimanere a casa, mentre i musicisti continuano a suonare e a cantare, gli autori a fare letture e gli attori a recitare dal vivo online.

Verso la fine della settimana ho realizzato di aver esaurito l’adrenalina nello sforzo di mantenere le cose il più normale possibile per la mia famiglia, e ho dovuto fare un passo indietro e semplicemente riposare. Venerdì sera abbiamo fatto una videochiamata Skype a tre con amici della nostra città e di Padova.

Abbiamo riso e raccontato il serio e il faceto.

Il valore della tecnologia nel tenerci connessi è enorme e ogni giorno comunico con la mia famiglia in Canada domandandomi quando riusciremo ad abbracciarci di nuovo.

Ci sono momenti in cui sono paralizzata

dall’orrore per ciò che sta accadendo attorno a me, e altri in cui ringrazio l’universo per il fatto di essere insieme in questo bozzolo comunque sicuro. Sono inoltre consapevole del fatto che si è smesso di riportare il più delle altre notizie: la guerra in Siria, i migliaia di rifugiati e emigrati intrappolati al confine tra la Grecia e la Turchia, e molto altro.

Sta cominciando a circolare ogni sorta di teoria cospiratoria riguardo sia alle cause del virus che alle modalità con cui si sta gestendo la pandemia, e i politici, talvolta, continuano ad insistere nel portare avanti battaglie ideologiche tra loro, così come fanno i cittadini italiani sui social. Uscire al di fuori dell’ideologia e riconoscere il valore di un’azione positiva indipendentemente dal colore politico di chi la sta svolgendo è un’ardua impresa in questo paese fortemente diviso. Nonostante ciò, dinnanzi al disperato appello per 300 medici che prestino assistenza nelle regioni più infettate, in migliaia dal personale medico hanno risposto alla chiamata.

A volte, per me non è stato facile vivere in Italia: per le sue contraddizioni, la sua anarchia organizzata, e la profonda bruttezza che coesiste con la sua incredibile bellezza.

Ma in questo momento difficile, ciò che hanno suscitato l’arte che toglie il respiro, la musica, l’architettura, la genialità filosofica e la tecnologia e lo stile all’avanguardia, di cui è formato il sostrato socio-culturale italiano, sta venendo alla luce rendendomi fiera del mio DNA italiano trasmessomi dal lato paterno.

Ho cominciato a guardare solo il notiziario della sera così la mia giornata può svolgersi relativamente tranquilla. Mi sveglio spesso la notte e ho difficoltà a riaddormentarmi.

Il resto del mondo ci sta raggiungendo.

Paesi come la Spagna, la Francia e gli Stati Uniti stanno cominciando ad avere il nostro numero di casi, avvicinandosi al nostro tasso di mortalità. Speriamo che altre nazioni come il Canada abbiano agito in tempo per evitare il dolore di ciò che stiamo vivendo: i militari per le strade, i camion che trasportano i corpi che gli obitori locali non riescono più ad ospitare e gli operatori sanitari che perdono la vita a causa del virus.

Sto cercando di cogliere l’attimo; di riconoscere la bellezza nei dettagli ed apprezzare la loro eccezionale natura. Abbiamo piantato i semi del radicchio, dei piselli, del basilico e della lattuga e cominciato a dipingere l’esterno di casa nostra. Ieri, abbiamo trascorso la mattinata a piantare patate e cipolle negli spazi di terreno che abbiamo liberato quest’anno per il nostro orto. Oggi pomeriggio alle tre abbiamo appuntamento in soggiorno. riday, April 3, 5:45 p.m. Twenty-third day of confinement. The cool air feels soft, the evening light glowing fluorescently as it often does just before a brilliant sunset. In the historic district where I live in the north of Rome, 10 minutes from Piazza del Popolo (which has never been so empty) the excitement that precedes a celebration is palpable. From the balconies, Italian flags hang alongside illustrations of rainbows drawn by children. They flutter in the wind with their optimistic message: “Everything will be fine.” On rooftop terraces, sparse human figures stand out against the clear spring sky.

At 6 p.m. again today, two daily events will punctuate the nation’s quarantine routine. The first is the civil protection press conference, during which statistics for the past 24 hours will be reported: the number of people infected, in remission, who have recovered or died. The second is a musical flash mob. Each day, at the same time, an entire population sits on its balconies and windowsills to sing and play music together.

While it is no coincidence these events coincide, for my spouse and myself, who would willingly participate in both, the synchrony is unfortunate: confinement is so monotonous that even two daily events can bring jolts of excitement to our lives, these days restricted to the simplest of pleasures. Then again, perhaps having a choice is better.

Whenever melancholy strikes and the hunger for diversion outweighs the compulsion to forage for frightening news, going out and singing is probably more in line with one’s needs.

5:59 p.m. Sliding windows and patio doors swing wide. We raise the blinds and slap the shutters open. At precisely 6 p.m., pleasant melodies overtake the evening air. While traditionalists usually begin with the national anthem, other homes observe the municipal programs that stick to a classic Italian repertoire—such as “Volare” by Domenico Modugno, “Azzuro” by Adriano Celentano or “L’Italiano” by Toto Cotugno.

Others still, improvise freely, following their own tune. While social media provides a national program to sing along to, some communities would rather draw on their local identities, as in Naples, where residents

are reconnecting with their beloved Pino Daniele, and in Cagliari, where citizens have rekindled their love for traditional Sardinian song.

As long as the impulse to share a collective moment of joy exists, the song might not matter.

When the singing starts, I always watch from my kitchen or bedroom window. There, I can best see the first floor of the building across the way where two families of neighbours have coalesced. One of them, rather large, is composed of a grandmother—always wearing comfortable indoor clothes, her immaculate hair increasingly voluminous in these times of shuttered salons—a mother, a father and their three children.

The eldest, sporting a blonde ponytail, earrings and a perfect manicure, holds an expensive microphone. She forms a duet with her neighbour, the other star of the complex, also a teen and the sole daughter to parents in their fifties, who are wearing matching sweaters and glasses for the event.

Both families sing together in unison with boundless energy. With their loud, high-quality speakers and captivating female vocals, they have what it takes to make any neighbourhood quake. The two clans rejoice and cheer each other on, as the girls merge their voices in soaring harmony. After the song of the day, several classics follow. Today, I owe them one of my only smiles.

The other day in the courtyard, I ran into the blonde girl as she happened to be taking out the garbage too. Standing at least one metre away, I complimented her on her performance. In these houses formerly intended for workers, the influx of new bourgeois residents has split the social ecosystem into two camps. I suspect she belongs to the former; her neighbour and duet partner to the latter. “It’s how we became friends,” she tells me, playfully pointing to her friend, chatting on a cellphone by her window at that very moment. “When the state of emergency is done, we will organize a karaoke night every week. Come if you want.”

“Why not,” I replied.

It took a while before I allowed myself to participate in the musical ritual. Over the first couple of days, embarrassment prevented me from joining the party. Hiding behind half-drawn curtains, I would scan the pinkish 1930s building facades as if they were a foreign backdrop. I was stunned to see people rejoicing, and felt the need to defend my privacy

C-19 and the meditative silence of our apartment. I’m not quite sure how, but in just a few days my neighbours’ euphoria got the better of me. Now, I gladly find myself belting out as much as my lungs will allow, bobbing my head as my hips sway in time. It’s like New Year’s Eve. Like a big wedding.

While many famous singers and musicians have made lovely videos performing on their balconies, I have found myself particularly touched by this mass phenomenon. Since the beginning of the pandemic, windows on my street have stopped being those metaphorical openings we use to catch a glimpse of private life. Instead they are proscenium arches for life’s current theatre, and an important point of contact, like a bridge. It was from the windowsill that we applauded the nursing staff and doctors working day and night. It was from the windowsill that we silently waved lanterns in the dark to give us courage. They have helped our crumbling sense of togetherness storm back to defeat our loneliness. As much as COVID-19 itself, this collective spirit marks the beginning of a new era.

On March 11, the day before all bookstores and non-essential services closed in Italy, I published my first novel, Niente per lei. The story begins in 1943 during the bombing of the San Lorenzo district in Rome. The family of the main character and his numerous neighbours take refuge, as planned, in one of the multiple shelters, rushing to safety under screeching sirens. During those harsh times, we also found ourselves confined with a few others, keeping each other company, talking and offering comfort and maybe even singing a little.

These days from our balconies, whenever our eyes meet, we see each other for what we really are: human beings, defined not only by work and consumptiveness, but also by our imperfect nature and our need to process the tragic and the comic. The virus may have attacked our lungs, but it may have also healed the heart of Italian society in many ways.

Nelle palazzine del comprensorio storico in cui abito, a nord di Roma, a dieci minuti da una piazza del Popolo che non è mai stata tanto deserta, si percepisce la tipica eccitazione che precede una festa. Sulle ringhiere sventolano bandiere italiane e arcobaleni dipinti da mani infantili

accompagnati da parole ottimistiche: “Andrà tutto bene”. Sui terrazzi condominiali sparute silhouette umane si stagliano contro il cielo terso di questa primavera. Alle sei si terranno i due eventi quotidiani che scandiscono il calendario della quarantena nazionale. Il primo è la conferenza stampa della Protezione civile in cui verranno riportati i numeri delle ultime ventiquattrore, guariti, dimessi, contagiati, morti. Il secondo è un flashmob musicale: ogni giorno alla stessa ora un popolo intero si affaccia dalle finestre e dai balconi di casa e canta, suona, diffonde musica.

Non è un caso che i due appuntamenti coincidano, per chi come me e il mio compagno seguirebbe volentieri entrambi la sincronia sembrerebbe un peccato: la giornata è talmente monotona che segnare due diversi appuntamenti in agenda farebbe guadagnare alla nostra condizione di distanziamento sociale non poca eccitazione, poiché di piccole emozioni sono fatti questi tempi sospesi. Ma non sottovalutiamo l’opportunità della scelta.

Quando l’umore è basso e il desiderio di distrarsi supera quello di ricevere informazioni spesso temibili, uscire all’aria aperta e cantare è l’alternativa migliore che si possa avere.

17.59. Si aprono i battenti delle finestre, scorrono le porte a vetro, si tirano su le serrande, si spalancano le persiane. Alle 18 in punto una molteplicità di melodie invade gentilmente l’atmosfera. Qualche tradizionalista apre come ogni giorno con l’Inno d’Italia; in altre case, più ligie al programma comunale, ci si attiene alla traccia del giorno, classici della canzone italiana come Volare di Domenico Modugno, Azzurro di Adriano Celentano, L’Italiano di Toto Cotugno; altri ancora improvvisano in libertà, secondo sentimento. Sui social circola un programma nazionale delle canzoni da eseguire, ma l’identità locale consente ai napoletani di sgolarsi con il loro amato Pino Daniele e ai cagliaritani di godersi i loro canti sardi tradizionali. Vale tutto, purché il desiderio comune di condividere un momento di allegria sia esaudito.

Quando scatta l’ora x mi affaccio sempre dalla finestra della cucina o da quella della camera da letto, da questo lato della casa posso osservare meglio il primo piano della palazzina davanti alla nostra dove due famiglie di vicini si sono coalizzate. Una è numerosissima: nonna, – abiti comodi da casa, capelli immacolati resi particolarmente voluminosi dalla chiusura dei parrucchieri – moglie, marito e tre figli. La maggiore – alta coda bionda, cerchi alle orecchie, manicure impeccabile – ha un microfono professionale. Duetta con la ragazza del balcone limitrofo, altra star del palazzo, adolescente come lei e figlia unica di due cinquantenni con occhiali da vista e maglioncini coordinati.

Le famiglie cantano all’unisono con energia incontenibile, hanno tutto il necessario per far tremare il lotto: ottime casse a volume spiegato, voci femminili vigorose che comandano. I due nuclei si incitano a vicenda, ridono, le ragazze si allineano su tonalità sorprendenti. Alla

canzone del giorno seguono molte altre. Devo a loro uno dei miei rari sorrisi della giornata.

Una mattina incontro la ragazza bionda in cortile, abbiamo entrambe un sacchetto dell’immondizia in mano, da almeno un metro di distanza mi complimento per la performance. In queste palazzine un tempo popolari dall’arrivo dei nuovi residenti borghesi l’ambiente sociale si è scisso in due fazioni, credo che la sua famiglia appartenga al nucleo originale, quella dei vicini al nuovo. “Siamo diventate amiche così!” mi dice tutta soddisfatta indicandomi la ragazza dell’appartamento accanto che parla al telefono in finestra, “quando finirà l’emergenza organizzeremo un karaoke ogni settimana, vieni se ti va”. “Perché no,” le rispondo.

Ci ho messo un po’ a partecipare al rituale della musica, i primi giorni l’imbarazzo mi impediva di unirmi al concerto, scrutavo il profilo rossastro delle palazzine anni Trenta come un panorama a me estraneo, tenendomi a distanza, dietro le tende tirate a metà. Spiavo questa gente, stupita dalla loro allegria, e sentivo di dover difendere la riservatezza dei miei spazi, il silenzio meditativo del nostro appartamento. Non so come però, nel giro di pochi giorni l’euforia dei vicini mi ha travolto e ora mi sorprendo a cantare a squarciagola insieme a loro, dondolando testa e gambe a ritmo. Come a Capodanno, come a un matrimonio.

Molti musicisti e cantanti famosi hanno diffuso video in cui anche loro si esibiscono sul balcone, ma io sono più colpita dal fenomeno comune. Da quando siamo chiusi in casa la finestra da luogo metaforico di curiosità e accesso a una dimensione privata si è trasformata in palcoscenico, punto di contatto, più che una finestra un ponte. Da lì abbiamo applaudito al personale sanitario e ai medici che lavorano giorno e notte, da lì abbiamo ondeggiato luci silenziose, nel buio, per farci coraggio. Il senso di comunità che si stava allentando nei quartieri è tornato a rincuorare le nostre solitudini. Da questo, come dal COVID-19, non si tornerà indietro.

L’undici marzo, il giorno prima che in Italia chiudessero tutte le librerie e le attività commerciali non considerate di prima necessità, ho pubblicato il mio primo romanzo “Niente per lei”. La storia si apre nel 1943 durante il bombardamento di San Lorenzo, qui a Roma.

La famiglia della protagonista e i suoi numerosi vicini si rifugiano come di consueto in uno dei tanti ricoveri in cui si scappava al suono delle sirene. In quel drammatico momento d’emergenza ci si trovava fianco a fianco con gli altri, ci si faceva compagnia, si parlava, ci si consolava, forse si cantava anche un po’. Oggi sui balconi torniamo a guardarci con curiosità riconoscendoci per ciò che siamo: esseri umani, accomunati non solo dai consumi e dalle incombenze quotidiane, ma dalla nostra natura imperfetta, dal nostro bisogno di esorcizzare il drammatico con il comico. Il virus ha strozzato il respiro, ma guarito il cuore di questa nostra società italiana.

here’s nothing like a global pandemic to kibosh all your travel plans to Italy (or anywhere abroad for that matter) this summer. With restrictions slowly lifting, while we are breathing some relief as we are granted the physical distancing version of freedom to roam, it has become abundantly clear that as Canadians, we are grounded this year from visiting Italy. Separated, yet united in so many ways...It has all the makings of an ill-fated war-time love story.

Instead of pining, what better way to connect with our love for Italy this summer than by travelling through the country, from north to south, hearing the personal lockdown stories of the people who lived through it firsthand? We spoke with Italians and expats asking them the same six questions about the full-blown lockdown experience. In this unprecedented moment of uncertainty, they shared the fears, the difficulties and even the unexpected joys. It has been said that deep within every crisis, there is an opportunity for something beautiful.

The lessons learned in lockdown are no exception, as that beauty of the human spirit shines bright and expresses itself in many forms. on c’è niente che possa mettere fine a tutti i nostri progetti di viaggio in Italia (o, a questo punto, ovunque) quest’estate, come una pandemia globale. Con l’allentamento graduale delle restrizioni, mentre torniamo a respirare e ci viene garantita la libertà di andarcene in giro in versione “distanziamento sociale”, è abbondantemente chiaro che quest’anno a noi canadesi non è consentito visitare l’Italia. Divisi, eppure uniti in molti modi…Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti per una sventurata storia d’amore in tempo di guerra. Invece di struggerci, quale modo migliore quest’estate se non quello di assecondare il nostro amore per l’Italia, viaggiando per il paese, da nord a sud, ascoltando i racconti personali del lockdown di chi l’ha vissuto in prima persona? Si è detto che nel profondo di qualunque crisi, si cela l’opportunità per qualcosa di bello. Le lezioni apprese durante il lockdown non fanno eccezione, dato che la bellezza dello spirito umano splende lucente e si manifesta in molti modi. 1. The most important strategy I put in place was first of all to disconnect from all the excess media coverage regarding the Coronavirus and, in place of the dismal information being broadcast, I chose to nurture my existence instead. I envisioned this lockdown time as “un mondo in una stanza” (a world in a room).

Luckily, I am blessed with “genius loci,” aka the spirit of location, as my little city apartment is located in the historical city centre of Udine, which looks onto the 16th century church of the Beata Vergine with a magnificent view of a white marble image of the Virgin holding the Holy Infant—my everyday awakening has always been a moment of intense beauty.

My daily routine helped to keep me centered, but I also made the most of the moment and enjoyed a festive holiday summer feeling by listening to Cafe del Mar, Radio Ibiza for hours on end. The sensual Mediterranean sound accompanied my day, and all these indulgent practices generated the necessary optimism to look beyond the number of deaths and the dark dystopian forecasts we were routinely bombarded with.

3. The abrupt lockdown and strictly enforced social distancing pushed me and all Italians to their windows, balconies, terraces and rooftops.

Every snippet of garden became a miraculous haven—a paradise rediscovered. The intensity of the silence and the luminous blue sky swept clean from the fumes of civilization have left us all with a sense of gratitude. Birdsongs fill the day and the unmistakable scent of fresh spring air enters our homes as we yearn for a return to that toxic (albeit less toxic) normality.

The light of the sunset as it slowly mutated into darker tones of sandy pink and tinted sky blue repeatedly brought each day to an end and, there in those moments leaning over the edge of the wall of the rooftop terrace, I felt I had squeezed every emotion out of the day and turned my gaze once more on the eternal stage of life.

5. This lesson in lockdown has made me often think of Nelson Mandela and his confinement that lasted years. Just the notion of the strength of this extraordinary man helped me understand my good fortune and the promise of the tomorrow that lies ahead.

2. Il momento più difficile è stato quando abbiamo realizzato la gravità dell’evento che si stava materializzando. Di colpo la città si è svuotata e l’unico rumore di fondo è diventato il suono delle sirene delle autoambulanze. Un incubo che diventa realtà.

C’è un nemico invisibile che uccide davvero e colpisce persone che conosco, sembra un film ma non lo è; bisogna uscire bardati come in guerra e si rischia ogni volta.

4. Riguardo a me, da molisano emigrato in Lombardia, penso che cercherò di orientare da subito la mia vita verso un ritorno ai lunghi natii, più vocati a stili di vita scanditi da ritmi naturali.

5. Qualche momento di gioia lo abbiamo avuto in questi giorni, quando sono arrivati i primi segnali di un possibile rallentamento dell’epidemia.

6. La prima cosa che farò quando tutto finirà, è prendere un espresso al bar. Poi, come ho già detto, cercherò di orientare con più impegno di prima, la mia vita verso uno stile che sia sostenibile e possibilmente svincolato da dinamiche globaliste, insomma una casa in campagna in Molise.

Così ogni giorno ho una routine con le pulizie di casa, la sistemazione di un piccolo giardino, la spesa settimanale organizzata nei minimi particolari a partire dalla nuova prassi di indossare mascherine e guanti. Insomma, c’è da pensare molto, e sembra di prepararsi per andare in trincea...

2. La parte iniziale, dopo la scoperta del primo contagio, quando h24 si ascoltava disperazione e morte in tutti i programmi televisivi e social. È da ricordare che l’Italia è stato il primo paese occidentale ad essere contagiato da COVID-19 ed eravamo davvero sotto shock.

Si aveva la sensazione che non si sapesse bene cosa fare e che uno tsunami ci fosse venuto addosso: centinaia di persone malate gravemente ogni giorno che arrivavano negli ospedali, ospedali pieni, terapie intensive insufficienti, medici contagiati, gente che gravemente malata doveva rimanersene a casa ma peggiorava e moriva, persone

4. Si è rafforzata una certa consapevolezza nel rendermi conto di quanto sia bella la normalità, quanto sia irrinunciabile la libertà, e quanto io ci tenga ad alcune persone.

Insomma ho imparato profondamente a non dar nulla per scontato! Forse banale, ma in questi momenti quello che conta è la gratitudine ed ora arrivo proprio a percepirla che esce e sgorga copiosa, spontaneamente dal più profondo del cuore! 5. Di sicuro tutti i momenti in cui sono riuscita a stare in contatto telefonico con amiche e famiglia! Ascoltare musica, rileggere alcuni best-seller. E poi qualche buona cena organizzata da Emanuele, il mio compagno, e qualche buon calice di Prosecco che in questi momenti è indispensabile! Cose semplici, sentimenti essenziali e fondamentali, quello che più conta insomma.

6. Appena potrò spostarmi nuovamente dal mio paese, per prima cosa andrò ad abbracciare la mia famiglia, poi la stessa sera uscirò e andrò con Emanuele in un ristorante carino dove gusterò una deliziosa cena e la giornata successiva... al mare! Voglio sentire il fragore delle onde, camminare sulla battigia, sdraiarmi al sole e sentire il profumo di salsedine sulla pelle!

Al primo posto, fare di tutto per cercare di mantenere una salute ottimale, poi impegnarmi sempre di più per raggiungere i miei obiettivi professionali per poter diventare una importante truccatrice ed una capace networker, senza mai però negare tempo agli affetti, alle

1. At home, my family and I started to organize our days with activities where we are all involved and doing something. We do movie night with popcorn, game night playing just about any board game you can think of, spa night (boys included) and Saturday brunch in the garden. We take turns planning meals, cooking and even grocery shopping. We all work out either doing yoga or just running on the treadmill. My husband and my son are putting their creativity and carpentry skills in action building outdoor furniture, like a new swinging bench for the backyard. There’s never a dull moment here. But it’s fun and diversified.

I’m really enjoying the family and watching my kids doing things together.

2. I think the hardest thing for me personally was learning how to be effective during my lessons, not being physically present for my students.

I’m used to walking around the classroom trying to get my students involved and motivated and keeping their level of attention high. It’s different online. It takes a lot more effort on my part, and I really hope they are learning and getting the most out of the lesson.

3. I’m a very social person so I didn’t really appreciate having to keep my distance from people—it was, and still is, very difficult. I have to admit though that I have more time to myself, and that’s a good feeling. I’ve seemed to

THE ANSWERS / LE RISPOSTE slow down whereas before I was always running for some reason or another. It’s such an awkward feeling, almost surreal to have your freedom taken away suddenly. Thank God for technology; it’s really helping me out. I have become social at another level. Besides teaching my lessons online, I can virtually meet my friends and relatives to have a chat. I’ve even done a workout with one of my classes (of course in English). My colleagues and I get together once a week on Google Meet (the same app I use with my students to do lessons) to discuss strategies and share our experiences and what we have learned. I’ve even taken some online courses for teaching as well as for cooking.

4. I’ve learned that I’m still motivated to learn new things in order to cope and resolve difficulties. I didn’t think I had it in me. Sometimes, I felt too tired to even bother to learn something new, but this situation has certainly stimulated my neurons to search for solutions and new projects for the future. It’s like a new hope has sparked inside of me. It has really motivated me. I’m not giving up. Things will get better!

5. I have to say that the event that brought me most joy in this period was when my daughter Lara had to discuss her thesis online. As you can imagine, she was disappointed about having to do the final part of her studies in this way, but there really was no choice. However, we planned to make it as special as possible and, as soon as the discussion was over, she went out on our front balcony where all the neighbours were out on their front lawns congratulating her and cheering her on. It was an emotional experience because traditionally Italians would have been hugging and kissing her, but seeing the situation, that was impossible. You could really feel their support in their words and actions. She was given bouquets of flowers picked from their gardens, they dedicated a poem to her and posted a five-metre banner on the fence in front of our house. My husband went inside to get a magnum of Champagne and asked everyone to bring out stemmed glasses from their homes and to put them on their front gates. He went from home to home filling the glasses until we were all ready to make a toast. It was very touching.

Then of course, we had a homemade fish dinner and strawberry cake for dessert.

6. I haven’t really thought about that. Sometimes it seems like it’s never going to end. There are a lot of things I want to do. I would like to get back to my early morning walks with my walking buddy, breathing in that fresh morning air that energizes me for the rest of the day. I want to have dinner with my family in my favourite restaurant and meet my friends

for an “aperitivo” at the beach at sunset. Of course, I would like to go home to Toronto to visit my family and friends.

This experience has made me appreciate my freedom more than ever. I admit, I’m scared something worse will come along because I would have never imagined something like this in my life, but my goals haven’t changed.

I still want us to be a happy family and love each other, I want to be fit forever and I never want to stop learning, discovering new places and meeting new people. Living with the whole family (five in total) in the house together has been a real test. We’ve argued, laughed, danced, in a way got to know each other. We’ve actually discovered some new things about one another, and I feel enriched and, if I may say so, lucky.

As far as my bucket list? I’ve never called it that. It’s just a travelling destinations list that maybe just got a bit longer.

1. I found it quite challenging to maintain any kind of routine with a two year-old who decided that napping was a thing of the past. The only two daily activities that were set in stone were my morning workouts (30 minutes of going up and down the stairs in our building) and afternoon playtime on the rooftop. Aside from those two things, everything else was improvised. Cooking, baking and arts and crafts were a part of most days. Work would only happen between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. almost every night.

2. When 6 p.m. came around, it was a question of minutes before the head of the Civil Protection Department, Angelo Borrelli, would give the daily bulletin (the famous “bollettino della Protezione Civile”). Otherwise known as the

“daily numbers,” the bulletin stated the number of new infections, complete recoveries and the dreaded number of deaths from the virus.

Hearing the last number that never seemed to go down was a daily reminder of just how serious the situation was in Italy. After a day of playing, cooking and video calling, 6 p.m. rolled in and snapped us back to the tragic reality we were living.

3. Social distancing did something I am grateful for: it actually brought me closer to the people that really matter. That friend that I would only see every two months, I would suddenly find myself video chatting with every couple of days. Or that cousin I would see only once a year, I started “seeing” every Saturday morning. I believe that many of us realized how much we were taking the people “in” our lives for granted now that they were forced to be “out” of our lives.

4. I learned that I make a fabulous carrot cake!

In fact, I’ve been complaining about never having enough time to cook in the last little while. This lockdown made it possible for me to rediscover cooking with passion, and not only out of necessity. I had forgotten the excitement

of making and trying new savoury dishes.

Rediscovering this was refreshing.

5. “Mama, I love being home with you and dad.” My two year-old would say this every day, and it was music to my ears. As stressed out and overworked small business owners, pausing for a moment is always quite challenging. The lockdown made it possible for us to spend time with our daughter. We were forced to leave work on the sideline and focus on her. This much-needed time together was a blessing.

6. In Italy, I’m afraid that going back to normal will happen very slowly and in many steps.

The day that we will be allowed to step out of our homes without any restrictions, I will most

1. I’m lucky because I am teaching English at a high school in Capri. So between online lessons, lesson planning, marking homework, working out and taking care of a house, I’ve been really busy. My day is different every day, and I get up, shower and get dressed like I am going to work.

2. The most difficult moment was about two weeks into lockdown. I had already been home with a compound fracture of my rib three weeks before lockdown started. It was a Sunday, and Sundays are even quieter (even in lockdown) than the rest of the week. On top of that, my husband was blocked overseas because of the virus, and I was feeling a bit restless and on edge.

5. I got the most joy from hearing from other people in lockdown and especially hearing from people I hadn’t heard from in a long time and never thought I would ever hear from again.

Also, the time to rest has been a plus.

6. I think I will go for a very long walk because I have missed my daily walks. I think I might be willing to try out new work experiences. My bucket list has changed somewhat. Travelling is always a must on my list, so it is still a top priority, as well as keeping in touch with people near and far.

nation has been more sublimely and often beautifully transformed by the COVID-19 lockdown than Italy.

Living through the pandemic and being the first hardesthit nation after China took its toll on all levels of society in Italy. The political scenario, which was a minefield to begin with, became difficult to track as central government made its ongoing decrees and tried to negotiate for more emergency funds with the European Union, whilst regional governments took different measures to contain the spread. One common factor we saw north to south and east to west, was the effective shutdown of businesses, a forced lockdown in primary residences and thus the effective emptying of cities from their public squares to their infrastructure.

The country’s most iconic landmarks had never been so hauntingly beautiful, from the empty Spanish Steps to a visitor-free Trevi Fountain in Rome; a vacant Piazza San Marco in Venice, where the pigeons and seagulls enjoyed free reign; down the miles and miles of empty coastlines in Sardinia and Sicily; to sightings of dolphins popping up from the Strait

of Messina, all the way to Friuli Venezia Giulia in the Gulf of Trieste.

Unprecedented events also took place, arguably the most poignant being the world-famous tenor Andrea Bocelli performing a “Music for Hope” concert in a completely empty Milan Cathedral for Easter Sunday, broadcast on YouTube.

“The feeling of being completely alone, as we all are before God, but at the same time using my voice to express the prayers of millions, profoundly moved me,” said Bocelli.

From an environmental standpoint, Italy has never looked better. Who could have imagined seeing flamingoes in Milan, ducks in fountains, deer roaming freely in the city centres of medieval towns, and a species of American buzzards in Pescara? The ecosystem improved, and with restrictions on movement, reduced traffic has brought down polluting emissions.

In a study from the national daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, almost 140,000 tons of CO2 were saved over 15 days in the three hardest-hit regions: Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. In that same period in Lombardy, there was a drop in carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and

Pm10 in all of its cities. Everyone I have spoken to that lives in a city centre will tell you that the air had never been this clean and breathable.

In another fortuitous twist of fate, it was thanks to the lockdown that many were saved on the fateful morning of April 8, when the Aulla bridge along the Magra River in the Tuscan province of Massa Carrara collapsed. Though one truck driver was injured, there were no casualties. This failing piece of infrastructure was deserted, avoiding another tragedy similar to that seen two years ago on Genoa’s Morandi bridge.

Many had pointed out the benefits the planet witnessed from a marked absence of human intervention. However, the economy’s suffering touches another note. The image here is of the empty businesses, closed storefronts and shuttered manufacturing plants across the country. The World Monetary Fund estimates that Italy will be the worst hit economy, losing over nine percent of its GDP. And yet there are numbers, which are far drearier: as of May 27, the death toll in the country has surpassed 33,000. The most distressing images representing the loss were those of churches filled with caskets rather than parishioners, and the now-immortalized procession of

military vehicles leaving the city of Bergamo in Lombardy to take hundreds of victims of the COVID-19 virus to be cremated elsewhere as the local cemeteries could no longer cope.

And then there is the image of a figure that gives us hope, Pope Francis, providing our daily dose of spiritual consolation amidst the pain of losing hundreds of lives per day. Some of the most iconic moments of this lockdown took place in an empty St. Peter’s Square, a stark contrast from what we are used to seeing.

“Unfortunately, I am getting used to seeing the square empty, but the Via Crucis and the Pope’s prayer on March 27 were so powerful, I realized I was attending something truly incredible and witnessing an important chapter in history,” recounts Matteo Ciofi, a journalist based in Rome.

As Italy awaited the phase two directives from the government, we hang in the balance between seclusion and freedom. Some started breaking the rules, unable to stay home, while others are fearful of what lies outside of their safety net. We can only hope that now that we have begun spilling back out into these empty spaces, that we do not reverse the good our absence has done.

Lo scenario politico, che era già di per se un campo minato, è diventato difficile da seguire. Da una parte il governo centrale che emanava i propri decreti e cercava di negoziare ulteriori fondi per l’emergenza con l’Unione Europea, e dall’altro lato i governi regionali adottavano provvedimenti diversi per contenere il contagio. Un fattore comune che scorgiamo da Nord a Sud, da Est a Ovest, è stata la chiusura temporanea delle attività commerciali, un isolamento forzato nella zona di residenza primaria e dunque l’effettivo svuotamento delle città, dalle piazze pubbliche alle infrastrutture.

I luoghi più simbolici del Paese non sono mai stati tanto incredibilmente belli, da una Piazza di Spagna vuota a una Fontana di Trevi senza visitatori; a una Piazza San Marco di Venezia deserta, in cui piccioni e gabbiani hanno adesso carta bianca; ai chilometri e chilometri di costa desolata in Sardegna e in Sicilia; fino agli avvistamenti di delfini che spuntavano dallo Stretto di Messina, in su fino al Friuli Venezia Giulia, nel Golfo di Trieste.

Ci sono inoltre stati eventi senza precedenti tra cui, il più toccante, è stato senza dubbio l’esibizione del rinomato tenore Andrea Bocelli nel concerto “Musica per la Speranza”, tenutasi nella piazza completamente deserta del Duomo di Milano durante la Domenica di Pasqua, e mandato in onda su YouTube.

“Quella sensazione d’essere contemporaneamente solo – come lo siamo tutti, al cospetto dell’Altissimo – eppure di esprimere la voce della preghiera di milioni di voci, mi ha profondamente colpito e commosso” ha affermato Bocelli.

Da un punto di vista ambientale, l’Italia non è mai apparsa meglio. Ci saremmo mai immaginati di vedere i fenicotteri a Milano, le anatre nelle fontane, i cervi girovagare liberamente nei centri storici delle cittadine medievali, e una specie di avvoltoio americano a Pescara? L’ecosistema ne ha giovato e, con le restrizioni sugli spostamenti e il traffico ridotto, le emissioni inquinanti sono diminuite. In uno studio del quotidiano nazionale Corriere della Sera, nelle tre regioni più colpite, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna e Veneto, si sono risparmiate quasi 140.000 tonnellate di CO2 nel giro di 15 giorni. Nello stesso periodo, in tutte le città della Lombardia si è registrato un calo di monossido di carbonio, diossido di azoto, diossido di zolfo e di PM10.

Tutti quelli con cui ho parlato e che vivono in centro città vi diranno che l’aria non è mai stata tanto pulita e respirabile.

In un altro scherzo del destino, è stato grazie al lockdown che molti si sono salvati in quel disastroso mattino dell’8 aprile in cui è crollato il ponte di Aulla lungo il fiume Magra nella provincia toscana di Massa Carrara. Un autista di camion è rimasto ferito, nessun morto, grazie al fatto che la parte crollata dell’infrastruttura era deserta, evitando in tal modo un altro episodio tragico come quello vissuto due anni fa sul ponte Morandi di Genova.

In molti hanno sottolineato i vantaggi di cui stava beneficiando il pianeta grazie alla notevole assenza dell’impatto umano. Ma la sofferenza dell’economia tocca un altro aspetto. L’immagine qui è quella di attività commerciali vuote, di negozi chiusi e strutture manifatturiere ferme in tutto il Paese. Il Fondo Monetario Internazionale stima che quella dell’Italia sarà l’economia più colpita,

Le immagini più angoscianti di questa perdita sono state quelle delle chiese vuote, piene di bare piuttosto che di parrocchiani, e l’immagine delle processioni di mezzi militari che lasciano la città di Bergamo in Lombardia per trasportare centinaia di vittime del virus COVID-19 ad essere cremate altrove, visto che i cimiteri locali non non hanno potuto farsene carico.

E poi c’è stata l’immagine di una figura che ci ha dato speranza, Papa Francesco, che ha offerto una dose quotidiana di consolazione spirituale in mezzo al dolore per la perdita quotidiana di centinaia di vite.

Alcuni dei momenti più simbolici di questo lockdown sono giunti da una Piazza San Pietro vuota, in netto contrasto con ciò che siamo abituati a vedere. “Sfortunatamente,

mi sto abituando a vedere questa piazza vuota, ma la Via Crucis e la preghiera del Papa del 27 marzo sono state così potenti da farmi realizzare che stavo partecipando a qualcosa di veramente incredibile e di essere testimone di un importante capitolo della Storia” racconta Matteo Ciofi, giornalista di Roma.

Mentre l’Italia attendeva le direttive del governo per la fase due, noi siamo in bilico tra l’isolamento e la libertà. Alcuni hanno già cominciato a infrangere le regole, incapaci di starsene a casa, mentre altri hanno paura di ciò che c’è al di fuori della propria zona protetta. Possiamo solo sperare che ora che abbiamo ricominciato a uscire in questi spazi vuoti, non vanificheremo il bene che la nostra assenza ha apportato.

Travel in the COVID-19 era Viaggiare nell’era del COVID-19

T

he staggering global scale of the COVID-19 pandemic makes it unlike anything we have experienced in living memory, with entire countries shut down and economies put on hold. The ability to travel is just one of the many luxuries temporarily suspended as the novel coronavirus spreads its way across the world and we seek to flatten the curve.

Many are questioning when we will be able to travel again, and what form our travels will take once countries begin to re-open their borders to visitors. The question is especially poignant for Italy, which mourns the devastating loss of life even as it questions how to revive the tourism that much of the country is dependent on.

“Italy has been one of the hardest-hit countries economically because it is so dependent on the tourism industry,” explains Francesca Spizzirri, a travel writer and retreat host specializing in trips to Italy. “Tourism accounts for 12% of its legitimate GDP, but that figure is actually substantially higher because of the black market. A lot of towns rely on spring and summer tourism. Sadly, tourism will be the most impacted industry and the slowest to revive.”

When will be able to see the verdant,

rolling hills of Tuscany, the canals of Venice and the snow-capped spires of the Dolomites again?

“The true answer is we just don’t know when Canadians will be able to visit Italy,” explains Maurizio Magnifico, sales manager at St. Clair Travel in Toronto. “The situation is fluid and things seem to change every day. Many airlines have cancelled flights into Italy for the entire year. Even though Italy has been hard hit and tourism is vital to the economy, they are being slow in re-opening it, especially as it relates to overseas visitors.”

At the time of writing, Italy is opening its borders to EU visitors. Magnifico is cautiously expecting some limited travel to Italy from North America in late 2020 or early 2021.

But even if Italy is fully open to travellers next year, it will take quite a long time before the travel experience is what it was prior to COVID-19. Given what’s been happening with social and physical distancing, we’re not going to flick a switch and return to the old normal.

Some things will change.

The question many experts say we should be asking ourselves is not when Italy will re-open to travel, but whether a visit to Italy pre-vaccine is a wise decision.

One of the unknowns surrounds insurance and how it will apply to the coronavirus. Will travel insurance even cover COVID-19? We don’t know. Will cancellation insurance cover COVID-19? We don’t know. What will hotel and airline policies be in the event a trip has to be cancelled due to a resurgence of the virus. Will they offer refunds, or will they be providing credit instead as they’ve done in the months since COVID-19 shut down the world? We don’t know.

“You need to ask yourself whether you can live without your money for an indefinite period if your trip is cancelled and you are only offered credit by airlines, hotels and tour groups,” offers Spizzirri. “Perhaps more importantly, do you feel comfortable taking the risk of being quarantined in another country should there be a new outbreak and flights are suddenly cancelled?”

“We’re expected to see spikes in outbreaks over the next few years. It’s possible that when we do, governments will impose mandatory 14-day quarantine for foreign travellers entering the country and for those returning from foreign travel,” adds Magnifico. “If you’re going to be quarantined for two weeks, what’s the point of the trip? And can you afford to

For this reason, I suspect the first people to travel to Italy will be those with family there or properties that they want to check up on, rather than tourism-related visitors.”

There’s also the matter of safety. Nobody is going to want to book a seat and be four or five inches from another passenger. With that in mind, international carriers are reducing the number of customers on each flight and adhering to social distancing by blocking middle seats. But even so, will you feel safe travelling on a plane where everyone is breathing the same recycled air (especially in light of recent studies that show the virus can be spread via air-conditioning systems) and everyone is using the same tiny bathrooms? How about crowding at check-in areas and waiting lounges? And the same goes for trains, a primary mode or transportation in Italy.

For many travellers, the risks associated with international travel is likely to be too high in the short term. “I think travel within our own borders is a safe first destination,” says Spizzirri.

Here are some key, noticeable ways that travel may be altered by COVID-19 Hotels: You can expect hotel rates to drop steeply to encourage people to get travelling again, and they will likely remain low for several years. After 9/11, it took approximately three years for hotel rates to return to pre-attack

levels. Additionally, many experts also believe Airbnb-type rentals will fall out of favour for a time, with hotels reaping the benefits, as travellers will opt for the safety and security of the cleaning and safety protocols that one gets from an established lodging provider.

Cruises: Similarly, travellers will also find cut-rate prices for a time as cruise lines seek to restart service. The challenge will be in attracting new customers after global headlines about coronavirus outbreaks on ships and denied ports of call will have scared many away. New ships will likely boast bigger staterooms and less passenger density to attract new customers. The trade-off for such peace of mind will likely be higher prices.

Planes: It will take time to regain public confidence in the safety of flying. The removal of middle aisles may become permanent.

Carriers may also eliminate some food and beverage service to cut costs and reduce interaction on board. Business travel will rebound first, followed by domestic leisure travel and finally, transoceanic flights. Less passengers likely means higher ticket prices as airlines struggle to remain viable and service routes.

Social distancing: “If planes are flying with reduced capacity to ensure safe distance between people, we’re almost certainly going to see the same at museums, galleries, restaurants,

and other popular tourist destinations,” offers Magnifico. “This will mean longer wait times and perhaps higher costs.” We may also be expected to wear masks and gloves while in high-density public places.

Sustainable travel: The only winners that come out of the pandemic will be tourism operators in the sustainable, eco-friendly niche of the industry. Travel may emerge from COVID-19 in a more responsible and ethical place. “The trend was towards sustainable, eco-friendly travel before the virus and we may see a heightened focus on it moving forward,” says Spizzirri. “A lot of my trips are smaller, more experiential. I think that model will only become more popular. Will people want to be in groups of 50, or would they feel safer in smaller groups? I think the answer is obvious.”

Eventually, a vaccine will be manufactured and become widely accessible. It’s only at that point that tourism will truly begin to rebound from the devastation wrought by COVID-19. Experts believe pent-up demand will almost certainly see a return to normal travel eventually, but right now it’s anyone’s best guess when that will be.

Rome’s Coliseum, the sun-kissed waters of the Amalfi, and majesty of the Duomo di Milano may call to us, but it will be some time before we can answer.

Quando potremo rivedere le verdi e sinuose colline toscane, i canali di Venezia e le vette innevate delle Dolomiti? “La verità è che non sappiamo quando saremo in grado di visitare l’Italia,” spiega Maurizio Magnifico, responsabile vendite della St. Clair Travel di Toronto. “La situazione è fluida e le cose sembrano cambiare quotidianamente. Al momento, ci sono solo due compagnie aeree internazionali che volano in Italia, entrambe su Roma una volta alla settimana, e molte compagnie hanno cancellato i propri voli per l’Italia per il resto dell’anno. Sebbene quest’ultima sia stata duramente colpita e il turismo sia vitale per l’economia, con ogni probabilità riapriranno lentamente, soprattutto ai visitatori.”

Di fatto, l’Italia ha annunciato di aver chiuso i propri confini ai viaggiatori stranieri per il 2020. Al momento, Magnifico si aspetta un numero limitato di viaggi all’inizio del 2021 in via cautelativa.

Ma anche qualora l’anno prossimo l’Italia dovesse essere aperta ai viaggiatori, ci vorrà del tempo prima che l’esperienza del viaggio torni ad essere quella precedente al COVID-19.

Considerato quello che sta succedendo con il distanziamento fisico e sociale, non è che premeremo un interruttore e torneremo alla vecchia normalità. Alcune cose cambieranno.

La domanda che secondo molti esperti

Una delle incognite riguarda l’assicurazione e in che modo questa riguarderà il coronavirus.

L’assicurazione sanitaria da viaggio includerà la copertura per il COVID-19? Non lo sappiamo. L’assicurazione sulle cancellazioni includerà il COVID-19? Non lo sappiamo.

Quali saranno i regolamenti alberghieri e delle compagnie aeree nel caso in cui un viaggio debba essere cancellato a causa di una ricomparsa del virus? Offriranno dei risarcimenti o offriranno un credito come hanno fatto per mesi da quando il COVID-19 ha paralizzato il mondo? Non lo sappiamo.

“Dovete chiedervi se potrete vivere senza soldi per un periodo indefinito, qualora il vostro viaggio dovesse essere annullato e la compagnia aerea, gli hotel e i tour organizzati dovessero offrirvi solo un credito,” suggerisce Spizzirri. “O, cosa ancora più importante, vi sentite tranquilli all’idea di correre il rischio di dovervene stare in quarantena in un altro paese dovesse verificarsi una nuova epidemia e i voli dovessero essere cancellati all’improvviso?” “È possibile che i governi imporranno una quarantena obbligatoria di 14 giorni ai viaggiatori stranieri in ingresso nel paese e a quelli di ritorno da viaggi internazionali,” aggiunge Magnifico. “Se dovrete starvene in quarantena per due settimane, qual è il senso del viaggio? Inoltre, vi potrete permettere di starvene in quarantena per due settimane al rientro? È per questo che sospetto che i primi ad andare in Italia saranno quelli che hanno familiari lì o proprietà che vogliono andare a controllare, piuttosto che visitatori per puro turismo.” È anche una questione di sicurezza. Nessuno vorrà prenotare un posto e starsene a dieci, dodici centimetri di distanza da un altro passeggero. Consapevoli di questo, le compagnie stanno riducendo il numero di passeggeri su ogni volo e rispettando il distanziamento sociale bloccando i sedili centrali. Ma anche così, vi sentirete al sicuro a viaggiare su un aereo in cui tutti respirano la stessa aria riciclata (soprattutto alla luce degli studi recenti che mostrano come il virus può diffondersi attraverso il sistema dell’aria condizionata) e tutti usano lo stesso, minuscolo bagno? Inoltre, c’è anche il problema dell’affollamento nelle zone del check-in e nelle sale d’attesa. Lo stesso vale per i treni, un mezzo di trasporto primario in Italia.

“When I saw what was going on in Italy, it got a little more real”

“I

only want to go through this once in my life,” says Dr. Sergio Borgia of the COVID-19 outbreak that has flipped the world on its head.

The medical director and corporate division head of the infectious disease program at William Osler Health System in Toronto has been on the front lines of COVID-19 since January, monitoring its spread through Asia, Europe and into North America, building the response plan for William Osler, treating patients and working on studies into experimental medications targeting the virus. He hasn’t had a day off since March. “It’s pretty beyond even what a doctor is used to,” he says.

“It’s nothing I ever imagined medicine could be like,” says Cassandra Paletta, a fourth-year medical student from Hamilton who graduates this year.

Paletta is getting a first-hand glimpse into the biggest pandemic in recent memory at Interfaith Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York shadowing physicians in one of the hardest-hit areas in North America. “A typical nurse-patient ratio at the hospital is 2:1,” says Paletta. “Now it’s 10:1 so it’s pretty intense.

I’ve been amazed watching my attending physicians treat patients and then taking the time to call their families and update them on their condition, since family members aren’t allowed at the hospital. It’s been an incredible learning experience.”

These are just a few of the thousands of doctors, nurses and support staff across Canada and the US working to stem the tide of COVID-19, often working overtime and putting their own health at risk to help patients.

Stepping up to support

“It’s the biggest crisis I’ve seen,” says Dr. Tanya DiGenova, pediatric intensivist in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Since children have been spared the worst of this disease so far, DiGenova and her team had the capacity to lend a hand when things got intense at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the neighbouring adult facility at the Glen hospital site.

When the Royal Vic experienced a surge in COVID-related admissions in March, DiGenova and the team at the Children’s mobilized their resources to treat two adult COVID patients, all while ensuring the safety of the children at the hospital. “A crisis brings out people’s true colours,” she says. “I was really moved by how much capacity our adult colleagues managed to maintain for us, all while supporting their own patients. On our side, people really mobilized to take in and support the patients and to give them the best care possible. It was a true team effort.”

Helping the helpers

Melissa Vitagliano is one of a group of medical students from McGill University in Montreal who refused to be a bystander to this medical crisis. When her classes and clinical rotations were cancelled in March following the province-wide lockdown, she and classmates Anthony Thorburn, Vincent Palmieri, Kaylie Schacter, Olivier Del Corpo, Jordana Serero and Alexa Del Corpo immediately mobilized to help. “We reached out to a few friends who are residents at the hospital and many of them said

they could really use just a simple good meal,” she says.

After researching similar models in cities like Los Angeles and Toronto, the group formed MerciMeals MTL, a non-profit that partners with local restaurants to deliver food to frontline workers in hospitals, pharmacies, community clinics and long-term care homes across the city.

To date, they have partnered with over 30 restaurants and have served over 2,000 meals.

Their crowdfunding campaign to support these restaurants has raised over $45,000.

Supporting our elderly population

Another vulnerable group has been the elderly, particularly those in seniors’ residences. Villa Charities in Toronto, which operates a number of residences across the city catering to the Italian-Canadian community, has to ensure the health and safety of its residents and avoid the tragedies that have befallen other centres.

It’s no small task, in any language.“It’s a large group with over 700 seniors who are active and who enjoy socializing,” says president and CEO Anthony DiCaita. “Encouraging them to stay home was a challenge. We set up a support team with added staff and arranged for outdoor exercise sessions, music and gifts of food to make their isolation a little more pleasant.

One family member reached out to let us know that her 95-year-old mother-in-law was so happy to receive a complimentary focaccia from one of our partners. She said it was a wonderful surprise in the midst of so much sad news, and that it helped her forget she had been isolated for so long.”

Close to home

It’s hard to ignore the impact the outbreak has had on Italian-Canadians watching from the sidelines as COVID ravaged Italy earlier in the year. “When I saw what was going on in Italy, it got a little more real,” says Dr. Borgia who, like his wife and children, is also an Italian citizen. “It was heartbreaking to see photos of empty churches and piazzas and of army trucks collecting dead bodies. I was in regular communication with friends and relatives, some of who are also doctors. Luckily none of my family got sick, but the suffering is definitely not over for them.”

Some Italian healthcare professionals warned their compatriots in the rest of the world of what was to come and how to mitigate it. “I was put in touch with a doctor from Milan who was reaching out to Italian physicians from around the world with advice on how to prevent the pandemic from getting as bad as it had in Italy,” says Dr. DiGenova. “It was really interesting to hear his perspective; he shared articles and opinions on what to do and how to organize the hospital to avoid the catastrophe that they were living in Italy. He said it was like a war zone.”

Coping with COVID

One person who knows the horrors of COVID firsthand is Giuliano Biagioni.

The 36-year-old Montrealer contracted COVID-19 in early March after a trip to the Caribbean with 11 of his friends. He was young and in good shape, which should have been a recipe for a speedy recovery.

After visiting the hospital and receiving a COVID diagnosis, he was sent home. Before long, his condition began deteriorating and he was rushed back to hospital and placed in a medically induced coma for five days and on a ventilator.

After a few very scary days in the ICU, he was eventually sent home, but the road to recovery was long. It took nearly two weeks after being discharged from the hospital to start feeling like himself again. He still experiences nightmares from the trauma. “Everybody that was with me on the trip tested positive for COVID-19,” he says. “They all had mild symptoms, and it was pretty much a walk in the park for them. I’m the only one who got very sick and almost died from it. I haven’t seen my family in a while. I am not taking any chances.”

Mi sbalordisco nel vedere i

medici curanti trattare i pazienti per poi trovare il tempo di chiamare le loro famiglie e aggiornarle sulle loro condizioni, dato che ai familiari non è consentito l’accesso in ospedale. Si sta rivelando un’esperienza formativa incredibile.”

Questi sono solo alcune delle migliaia di medici, infermieri e personale ausiliario che lavorano in tutto il Canada e gli Stati Uniti per arginare l’ondata del COVID-19, facendo spesso lo straordinario e mettendo a repentaglio la propria salute per aiutare i pazienti.

Farsi avanti per aiutare “È la crisi più grande che abbia mai visto” spiega la dottoressa Tanya DiGenova, intensivista pediatrica dell’unità di terapia intensiva pediatrica dell’Ospedale dei Bambini di Montreal. Dato che ai bambini sinora è stato risparmiato il peggio di questa malattia, DiGenova e la sua equipe hanno avuto la capacità di dare una mano quando la situazione si è fatta pesante all’Ospedale Royal Victoria, la vicina struttura per adulti nella zona ospedaliera di Glen.

COVID, DiGenova e l’equipe dell’ospedale dei bambini hanno mobilitato le proprie risorse per trattare due pazienti adulti con il COVID, il tutto garantendo la sicurezza dei bambini in ospedale. “Una crisi tira fuori il vero volto delle persone,” afferma. “Mi ha molto commossa quanta competenza sono riusciti a offrire i nostri colleghi, pur occupandosi nel frattempo dei loro pazienti. Dal canto nostro, le persone si sono mobilitate davvero per accogliere e sostenere i pazienti, offrendo loro le migliori cure possibili. È stato un vero lavoro di squadra.”

Aiutare chi aiuta Melissa Vitagliano è una degli studenti di medicina di un gruppo dell’Università McGill di Montreal che ha rifiutato di fare da spettatrice in questa crisi sanitaria. Quando a marzo, a seguito del lockdown dell’intera provincia, le sue lezioni e i suoi turni ospedalieri sono stati cancellati, lei e i colleghi Anthony Thorburn, Vincent Palmieri, Kaylie Schacter, Olivier Del Corpo, Jordana Serero e Alexa Del Corpo si sono mobilitati immediatamente per dare una mano. “Abbiamo contattato degli amici che lavorano in ospedale e molti di loro hanno detto che sarebbe bastato loro giusto un pasto semplice e buono” afferma.

Dopo aver cercato modelli simili in città come Los Angeles e Toronto, il gruppo ha formato MerciMeals MTL, una non-profit che collabora con ristoranti locali per fornire pasti ai lavoratori in prima linea negli ospedali, nelle farmacie, i centri ospedalieri comunitari e le strutture di assistenza a lungo termine in giro per la città.

Ad oggi, sono in collaborazione con oltre 30 ristoranti e hanno servito oltre 2.000 pasti. La loro campagna crowfunding a sostegno di questi ristoranti ha raccolto più di $45.000.

A sostegno degli anziani Un altro gruppo fragile è quello degli anziani, in particolare quelli delle case di riposo. Villa Charities a Toronto, che gestisce varie residenze in città a servizio della comunità italo-canadese, deve garantire la salute e la sicurezza dei suoi residenti, ed evitare le tragedie che si sono abbattute su altri centri. Non è semplice, in nessuna lingua. “È un grande gruppo con oltre 700 anziani arzilli e a cui piace socializzare” spiega il presidente e CEO Anthony DiCaita. “È stato difficile convincerli a stare a casa.

Abbiamo organizzato un gruppo di supporto con personale aggiuntivo e organizzato sessioni di attività fisica all’aperto, musica e donazioni di alimenti per rendere il loro isolamento un po’ più piacevole. Un familiare ci ha chiamati per farci sapere che la suocera di 95 anni era stata molto felice di ricevere una focaccia in omaggio da uno dei nostri soci. Ha detto che era stata una sorpresa fantastica nel bel mezzo di tutte queste brutte notizie e che l’aveva aiutata a dimenticare di essere rimasta isolata per tanto tempo.”

Vicini a casa È difficile ignorare l’impatto che l’epidemia ha avuto sugli italo-canadesi che assistevano dalle retrovie mentre il COVID devastava l’Italia all’inizio dell’anno. “Quando ho visto quello che stava succedendo in Italia, è diventato più reale,” aggiunge il dott. Borgia che, come la moglie e i figli, è anche cittadino italiano. “È stato straziante vedere le foto delle chiese e delle piazze vuote, e dei camion dell’esercito raccogliere i cadaveri. Ero costantemente in contatto con amici e parenti, alcuni dei quali sono anche medici. Per fortuna, nessuno dei miei familiari si è ammalato, ma la sofferenza non è certamente finita per loro.”

Alcuni operatori sanitari italiani hanno avvisato i loro compatrioti nel resto del

mondo di ciò che sarebbe arrivato e su come arginarlo. “Sono stato messo in contatto con un medico di Milano che stava contattando i medici italiani di tutto il mondo per consigliarli su come evitare che la pandemia diventasse tanto grave quanto in Italia,” afferma il dott.

DiGenova. “È stato molto interessante conoscere il suo punto di vista; ha condiviso articoli e opinioni su cosa fare e su come organizzare l’ospedale per evitare la catastrofe che stavano vivendo in Italia. Ha detto che era come una zona di guerra.”

Reagire al COVID Una persona che conosce molto bene in prima persona gli orrori del COVID è Giuliano Biagioni.

Il 36enne di Montreal ha contratto il COVID-19 all’inizio di marzo dopo un viaggio ai Caraibi con 11 amici. Era giovane e in forma, due cose che avrebbero dovuto essere la ricetta per una pronta guarigione.

Dopo una visita all’ospedale e una diagnosi di COVID, è stato rimandato a casa. Poco dopo, le sue condizioni sono cominciate a precipitare ed è stato portato d’urgenza in ospedale e messo in coma farmacologico per cinque giorni, assistito dal ventilatore.

Dopo pochi giorni terribili in rianimazione, infine è stato mandato a casa, ma la via verso la guarigione è stata lunga. Ci sono volute circa due settimane dalle dimissioni dall’ospedale prima di cominciare a sentirsi se stesso. Ha ancora incubi per via del trauma.

“Tutti quelli che erano in viaggio con me sono risultati positivi al COVID-19,” afferma. “Hanno avuto tutti sintomi lievi ed è stato abbastanza semplice per loro. Io sono l’unico ad essersi ammalato gravemente e quasi a morire. Non vedo la mia famiglia da un po’. Non voglio correre nessun rischio.”

epuis quelques mois, nous assistons à une crise humanitaire et économique sans précédent. Dans ce contexte de pandémie, des membres de la communauté se sont mobilisés en posant de grands ou de petits gestes qui, tous à leur manière, contribuent à influencer le cours des choses.

Le 10 avril dernier, le député de Marquette à l’Assemblée nationale, Enrico Ciccone, a reçu un appel confirmant la mise sous tutelle du CHSLD Herron. Bouleversé par la nouvelle et en colère, il a décidé d’intervenir directement. « J’ai mobilisé mon entourage. Certains ont répondu oui, d’autres non. J’ai contacté des amis, d’ex-hockeyeurs, des collègues et, sans le savoir, j’ai créé un mouvement d’entraide. Le lendemain, nous étions au CHSLD Nazaire-Piché (impossible d’accéder au CHSLD Herron). Tu penses savoir ce qui se passe, mais aussi longtemps que tu n’as pas marché dans les souliers d’un préposé, tu ne le sais pas. » Pendant deux semaines, le député et son équipe ont lavé, nourri et réconforté les bénéficiaires. « C’était l’enfer. Il y avait trois préposés, deux assistants et une infirmière pour 22 patients, dont 18 atteints de la COVID. Deux heures après notre arrivée, deux préposés victimes du virus ont dû partir. Chaque jour, j’étais profondément bouleversé.

Ce qui me soutenait, c’est qu’on réussissait à garder les gens en vie. » Ciccone n’a jamais été aussi affecté, et souhaite que davantage de gens s’impliquent sur le terrain. « En temps normal, ce travail est très difficile, alors imaginez en période de crise ! C’est terrible. Tu deviens responsable de la vie d’un autre être humain. » À la fin mars, la créatrice de costumes pour le cinéma et la télévision Simonetta Mariano a perdu toutes ses commandes du jour au lendemain.

Créative et débrouillarde, cette récipiendaire du prix de la meilleure créatrice de costumes décerné par l’Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision, pour son travail dans la production de la série Alias Grace, ne s’est toutefois pas laissé abattre et a décidé de faire quelque chose d’utile.

Armée de sa machine à coudre, Mariano a commencé à fabriquer des masques dans son sous-sol. Elle les a d’abord offerts à des amis, puis la demande a vite explosé. Des collègues du milieu, sans travail comme elle, sont alors venus lui prêter main-forte : ensemble, ils ont confectionné avec des bouts de tissus récupérés jusqu’à 1 000 masques par semaine. Mariano compte désormais sur l’appui

de près d’une centaine de bénévoles de l’industrie cinématographique. Depuis le début de la crise, ils ont réussi, via leur page Facebook CINÉMASK – BÉNÉVOLES, à distribuer plus de 10 013 masques et 1 970 bandeaux destinés à des personnes à haut risque ou en difficulté financière.

L’actrice itali-canadienne Claudia Ferri s’est quant à elle associée à une initiative du Breakfast Club of Canada / Club des petits déjeuners intitulée, Feed With Stories, en récitant sur sa page Facebook la fable Le Corbeau et le Renard, de Jean de La Fontaine. La mairesse de l’arrondissement Villeray–SaintMichel–Parc-Extension, Giuliana Fumagalli, et plusieurs de ses collègues se sont fait un devoir de saluer le travail des employés qui travaillent au front en se rendant régulièrement aux CHSLD Joseph-François-Perrault et Saint-Michel et en les remerciant tout particulièrement pour leurs efforts.

Luigi Santelli et Emilio Testa, du Club de l’âge d’or du parc Turin de Montréal, s’occupent activement de leurs membres, dont l’âge moyen est de 77 ans. « Nous recevons des appels de nos membres qui ont besoin de fruits, de légumes, de denrées alimentaires diverses. Nous allons faire les achats et déposons les provisions à leurs domiciles. » L’association paie pour les achats et, en collaboration avec la Casa d’Italia, leur offre également des œufs, qui sont prudemment déposés à leurs portes.

Depuis le début de la crise, Mariano A. De Carolis, le directeur général de la Caisse populaire Desjardins canadienne italienne de Montréal, travaille en étroite collaboration avec le Dr Giuseppe Maiolo, des Services communautaires canadiens italiens du Québec, et le diocèse de Montréal afin de trouver et d’aider les personnes de la communauté italo-québécoise qui sont en situation de détresse. « Grâce au Fonds d’aide du milieu de la Caisse, on peut offrir une aide directe. En collaboration avec le Club de golf métropolitain, des centaines de repas chauds sont préparés et distribués gratuitement sur une base régulière. Il est inconcevable qu’à cause de l’isolement, les gens ne puissent pas se nourrir convenablement », ajoute De Carolis. « Nous sommes là pour eux, jeunes ou vieux. » La Caisse populaire Desjardins canadienne

En terminant, j’aimerais saluer tous ceux et celles qui ont le cœur sur la main et qui s’évertuent jour après jour à aider leur prochain en ces temps difficiles. Sans votre dévouement, bon nombre de personnes à risque seraient malheureusement abandonnées à leur sort. Il n’y a pas de petits gestes quand il est question de sauver des vies. L’indomani, eravamo al CHSLD Nazaire-Piché (impossibile accedere all’Herron). Pensi di sapere cosa stia succedendo, ma fintantoché non sei nei panni di un addetto ai lavori, non lo sai.”

In due settimane il deputato e la sua squadra hanno lavato, nutrito e confortato i loro beneficiari. “Era l’inferno. C’erano tre preposti, due assistenti e un’infermiera per 22 pazienti, di cui 18 con il COVID. Due ore dopo il nostro arrivo, due addetti, vittime del virus, se ne sono dovuti andare. Ogni giorno, ero completamente stravolto. Ciò che mi sosteneva era il fatto di riuscire a tenere le persone in vita.”

Enrico Ciccone non è mai stato tanto colpito e spera che più persone si impegnino. “In tempi normali, questo lavoro è molto difficile, immaginatevelo allora in un periodo di crisi! È terribile. Diventi responsabile della vita di un altro essere umano.”

Alla fine di marzo, la costumista per il cinema e la televisione, Simonetta Mariano ha perso tutti gli ordini dall’oggi al domani.

Creativa e intraprendente, la vincitrice del premio come migliore costumista assegnatole dall’Accademia canadese del cinema e della televisione, per il suo lavoro nella produzione della serie Alias Grace, non si è lasciata abbattere per niente, e ha deciso di fare qualcosa di utile.

Armata della sua macchina da cucire, Mariano ha cominciato a fabbricare delle mascherine nel suo scantinato. Innanzitutto le ha offerte ad amici, poi la richiesta è cresciuta velocemente. Dei colleghi di settore, come lei senza lavoro, sono dunque giunti a dare man forte: insieme, hanno confezionato fino a 1000 mascherine alla settimana con degli scampoli di stoffa recuperati. Mariano conta ormai sull’appoggio di circa un centinaio di volontari dell’industria cinematografica.

Dall’inizio della crisi, sono riusciti, attraverso la loro pagina Facebook CINÉMASK – BÉNÉVOLES, a distribuire più di 10.013 mascherine e 1.970 bandane a persone ad alto rischio o in difficoltà finanziaria.

In collaborazione con il Club de golf métropolitain, vengono preparati e distribuiti gratuitamente centinaia di pasti caldi a cadenza regolare. È inconcepibile che a causa dell’isolamento, le persone non possano nutrirsi in modo adeguato,” aggiunge De Carolis. “Noi siamo lì per loro, giovani o vecchi che siano.”

La Cassa popolare canadese-italiana Desjardins lavora congiuntamente con vari organismi senza scopo di lucro – la Société de Saint-Vincent de Paul, Résilience Montréal, La Maisonnette des enfants, L’Église Vie d’espoir, il centro Don Bosco, ecc. –, alcuni dei quali contano una clientela profondamente intaccata dalla crisi.

Hospitality Industry Gives Back BY - D I M O N I C A F E R G U S O N

Toronto’s Distillery District

W

hether through volunteering, donating facility space or feeding the homeless, the hospitality industry came together to serve Canadians in a time of need.

The quaint cobblestone streets of Toronto’s Distillery District were usually brimming with art lovers, whiskey connoisseurs, fashionistas and foodies. However, during the coronavirus lockdown, they appeared abandoned.

The rare passerby walked with urgency on a mission to pick up essentials, but the laneways were otherwise empty. This eerie scene was comparable all over the world as people practiced social distancing.

Activity in the restaurant and event scene has continued to be sparse and displays a massive juxtaposition from a few months ago. Hot spots that required a reservation a month in advance and dining rooms filled with groups breaking bread and clinking wine glasses have been largely empty with apology letters or take-out schedules posted on the front door. A major shift has occurred in the hospitality industry.

“Over the past three months, sales and business basically dropped down to zero,” said Adam Mariani, owner of Brera Catering Company. “So, in the meantime, we created a line of products that are delivered to the homes of our clients called brerago.ca. The

idea was to properly use the free time and put together a project that we otherwise would have never had the time to do.” Brera Catering Company has created a functional meal delivery service at a reasonable price point.

Their vacuum-sealed pasta is ready to eat and can be refrigerated for seven days or frozen up to six months.

“There are some parts of town that are overloaded with small bars and restaurants.

They unfortunately can’t all survive,” said Pal Di Iulio, editor at Panoram Italia. “There is a natural selection that is sometimes thrust upon us, like this particular challenge, and people have no choice but to reinvent themselves.”

Businesses that were able to do so made a shift in production for two reasons—to stay afloat and to feed the community. “It took a couple of weeks to get in the rhythm of both perfecting the offering and the operations of it all, because it was a completely new business model that we had to execute in very little time,” explained Rob Gentile, chef at Bar Buca in Toronto. “For example, we amended our Sunday hours to accommodate earlier pickup and delivery, and we did a special delivery day in Vaughan because a lot of our guests live there and it was difficult for them to make it into the city to pick up.”

in the hospitality industry have kept their facilities running in order to serve those in need. They are continuing to evolve and extend the programs for accessibility. “There is a lot of community work that needs to be done, whether it be fundraisers that we are helping with financially or seeing if we can supply food to any food banks or hospitals that are in need,” said Angelo Amicone of Montreal’s PMG group. “Our emphasis right now has been put back into the community.”

The PMG group operates 12 banquet and conference centres on and around the island of Montreal, as well as a catering division equipped with food trucks to accommodate special requests. Their properties have taken the steps to ensure all the sanitation protocols and guidelines are respected. They have given food to many different organizations and are able to help whoever is in need. “We feel the community itself is what keeps us alive, so it was our turn to give back more than usual, because we have the time to really make a difference,” said Amicone.

In British Columbia, one of the ways the hospitality industry mobilized was to make sure its homeless population was taken care of. The homeless are marginalized in society and especially vulnerable to the virus. BC housing used the excess capacity of hotels in the downtown core of Vancouver to help

C-19 people get off the streets and designated rooms for those who needed to self-isolate.

The west-end Vancouver restaurant Robba da Matti, located within the Buchan Hotel, provided three meals a day during the pandemic to the 110 homeless people who were temporary residents at the hotel. “The everyday rhythm is good for the soul,” said Matti Rikkinen, owner of Robba da Matti. “We gave them a nice homemade soup and focaccia for lunch and fresh homemade pasta for dinner.”

During this continued period of social distancing, the world has never been more connected. Canada made remarkable strides in bringing together its citizens, from daily cheers from home thanking the frontline workers, to programs offering community assistance for grocery delivery to the elderly and babysitting.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially difficult for the hospitality industry, it has also shone a light on what is most important, and has proven that we are stronger together.

Se non fosse stato per i pochi passanti che andavano a comprare cose indispensabili, i vicoli sarebbero stati vuoti. Una scena inquietante che ha accomunato tutto il mondo, dato il distanziamento sociale in atto tra le persone.

L’attività nel settore della ristorazione e degli eventi ha continuato ad essere scarsa se paragonata a pochi mesi fa. I locali alla moda per i quali bisognava prenotare con un mese di anticipo, i ristoranti pieni di comitive che mangiavano e facevano tintinnare i bicchieri sono adesso vuoti, con cartelli di scuse appesi alla porta d’ingresso.

Nel settore della ristorazione si è verificato un enorme cambio di direzione. “Negli ultimi tre mesi, le vendite e le attività commerciali sono scese praticamente a zero,” racconta Adam Mariani, proprietario della Brera Catering Company. “Pertanto, nel frattempo, abbiamo creato una linea di prodotti chiamata brerago.ca che viene consegnata ai clienti a domicilio. L’idea era quella di sfruttare il tempo libero in modo consono per metter su un progetto che altrimenti non avremmo mai avuto il tempo di organizzare.”

La Brera Catering Company ha creato un servizio funzionale di catering a domicilio a un prezzo ragionevole. La loro pasta sottovuoto è pronta da mangiare e può essere conservata in frigorifero per sette giorni o congelata fino a sei mesi.

“Ci sono alcune zone in città piene di baretti e ristoranti. Sfortunatamente non possono sopravvivere tutti,” afferma Pal Di Iulio, redattore di Panoram Italia. “A volte, ci viene imposta una selezione naturale, come in questa particolare sfida, e le persone non hanno scelta, dovranno reinventarsi.”

Le attività commerciali che erano in grado di farlo hanno apportato dei cambiamenti alla produzione per due motivi: rimanere a galla e sfamare la comunità.

“Ci sono volute un paio di settimane per prendere il ritmo per perfezionare sia l’offerta che le intere operazioni, perché in poco tempo abbiamo dovuto dar vita a un modello di attività del tutto nuovo,” spiega Rob Gentile, cuoco di Bar Buca a Toronto. “Ad esempio, abbiamo modificato l’orario domenicale per facilitare, e rendere più rapidi, il ritiro e la consegna e abbiamo organizzato una consegna speciale a Vaughan perché molti dei nostri clienti vivono lì e gli era difficile venire in città per il ritiro.”

Molti ristoranti e attività nel settore della ristorazione e alberghiero hanno mantenuto i locali operativi per servire chi ne aveva bisogno.

Continuano ad evolversi e ad estendere i propri programmi per essere accessibili. “C’è molto da fare per la comunità, che si tratti di raccolte fondi che sosteniamo economicamente o di vedere se possiamo fornire pasti a centri di raccolta di alimentari o agli ospedali che ne hanno bisogno,” sottolinea Angelo Amicone del PMG group di Montreal. La nostra priorità al momento è quella di ricambiare la comunità.”

Il gruppo PMG gestisce 12 centri congressi e sale banchetto sia all’interno che all’esterno dell’isola di Montreal, così come una divisione di catering con tanto di furgoni per il trasporto di alimenti per assecondare le richieste speciali. Si sono assicurati che le loro proprietà siano tutte sottoposte alle

procedure e alle linee guida di sanificazione.

The new challenge for café culture I caffè italiani a rischio

If

there is one thing Italians simply cannot live without, especially while under home confinement, it is espresso: rich and invigorating, espresso serves to punctuate the grind, sprinkling a few welcomed pauses throughout daily activities. Many of us cannot wait to converge upon our favourite café to sip on a nice, tight cup of coffee as soon as pandemic restrictions are lifted, though we may find the experience slightly different with new social distancing rules in effect.

Created at the end of 2019, the Consortium for the Safeguarding of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee wants UNESCO World Heritage status awarded to espresso to ensure its quality in perpetuity. With thousands of jobs and businesses now suddenly in jeopardy, in Italy as in Canada, the initiative may be timelier than ever.

Italian cafés, hotels and restaurants bring in two billion euros per year, yet the Istituto espresso italiano, which defends and promotes authentic espresso and cappuccino, sees an industry in profound crisis. “The situation is critical for all employees in this sector, which accounts for 5% of all jobs in Italy,” explains Luigi Morello, the institute’s president. In Canada, the Coffee Association of Canada estimates that more than 160,000 jobs depend entirely on coffee.

The tragedy extends beyond affected establishments—many of which may not reopen at all—to customers, who also lose something cherished as their familiar environments are upended to abide by distancing measures.

According to the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Italian Espresso, it is more than just a drink; espresso is embedded in Italy’s lifestyle and culture.

Piero Ciampoli of Baristello caffè in Montreal agrees. “Obviously blend, type of roast, the porcelain cup, are all important. Still, Italian espresso encompasses so much more, including the place in which we have our coffee,” insists the barista of 20 years.

Whereas the English have their four o’clock tea, Italians enjoy espresso throughout the day.

Meeting for coffee is reserved for more lengthy affairs (like first dates) in most countries, but not in Italy. There, coffee is quick, lasting only a few minutes: they go in, “have a coffee,” and go back to work, only to return a few hours later for another dose.

In Italy, most cafés ask customers to pay extra to sit at a table, so fast coffee may also have its origins in frugality. For Italians, it is customary to step out for two or three coffees per day and drink them standing up at the espresso counter.

With another economic crisis looming, many café owners are wondering whether customers

will even be in a position to return with the same frequency as before.

Drinking espresso is a ritual regulating daily life in Italy. The ritual is the same across the peninsula, from north to south: people pile into cafés, back-to-back, elbows on counters defending inches of space and sticking around just long enough to knock back a tiny cup. Yet they often seize the opportunity to enjoy a brief chat with a friendly stranger or barista. This easy human proximity, which is such a feature of Italian life, may be in for a tough ride with new social distancing rules expected to last several months, perhaps even years. “Will customers overcome their fears of public gatherings and return to cafés?” Morello wonders.

For Ciampoli, the experience has already changed dramatically. “We have had to reduce our clients’ spaces and now only serve two or three customers at a time. We had to limit our operating hours too, moving to five days a week instead of six. With summer around the corner, we might survive the next few months, but once winter returns, managing indoor client areas will be problematic for many business owners,” he admits.

Increasingly threatened by coffee capsule makers and large commercial brands too, many in the industry see defending authentic espresso and its traditional coffee machines as imperative.

Ciampoli believes having local roasts is one way to deal with the threat.

“The crisis has forced us to review our business model and limit our losses from food prepared within our establishment. We make fewer sandwiches and focus more on selling basic products, like pasta or canned food. We also try to promote our coffee blends as much as we can through our online store,” explains Ciampoli. “Those who fail to adapt risk closing for good,” he admits. Cafés located in the city’s downtown core, which is currently deserted, could suffer the most.

Whether or not espresso is granted UNESCO heritage status, those yearning for a return to café culture will, for now, pay homage to the cherished lifestyle by ordering their espresso in a to-go cup—that is,until a friendly chat over a bustling countertop is once again deemed safe.

Con tutte le misure di distanziamento sociale che ci si aspetta con la riapertura dei locali, l’esperienza può tuttavia essere leggermente diversa.

Creato alla fine del 2019, il Consorzio di tutela del caffè espresso italiano tradizionale, prova d’altronde a far inserire l’espresso all’interno della prestigiosa lista del patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO, allo scopo di sottolineare e

tutelare il carattere unico di tale bevanda. E un provvedimento del genere sembra più che mai necessario nel contesto attuale, in cui migliaia di impiegati e di piccole attività commerciali sono minacciati, in Italia come in Canada.

Il mercato italiano dei bar, degli alberghi e dei ristoranti, che sfiora i due miliardi d’euro all’anno, è al momento in piena crisi secondo l’Istituto espresso italiano, che difende e promuove la cultura associata al caffè espresso ed al cappuccino di qualità. “Questa situazione allarmante riguarda tutti gli impiegati del settore che conta il 5% dei lavoratori italiani” afferma il suo presidente, Luigi Morello. In Canada, oltre 160.000 posti di lavoro dipendono dall’industria del caffè, secondo la Coffee Association of Canada.

La situazione è tragica non solamente per i locali, ma anche per i clienti che rischiano di ritrovarsi in locali asettici per via del distanziamento, o avanti a porte chiuse. Perché secondo il Consorzio per la tutela del caffè espresso tradizionale italiano, l’espresso più che una semplice bevanda, rispecchia un modo di vivere tipico della cultura italiana.

Barista a Montreal da oltre 20 anni, Piero Ciampoli, del caffè Baristello, è pienamente d’accordo. “È naturalmente una questione di miscela e di torrefazione, la tazza di porcellana, ecc…Ma l’espresso italiano ha anche a che fare con l’ambiente e il luogo in cui si consuma il caffè.”

Se gli inglesi hanno il loro tè delle quatro, in Italia non c’è un orario per bere un caffè. In molti paesi, l’incontrarsi per un caffè rientra quasi in un incontro galante. In Italia, prendere un caffè è in generale questione di pochi minuti. Si entra, “ci si fa un caffè” e si va via per proseguire con i propri impegni, per poi magari ritornare qualche ora più tardi.

Questa abitudine potrebbe anche essere legata a una questione di soldi, dato che in Italia, la maggior parte dei bar esige un supplemento per consentire ai clienti di accomodarsi ai

tavoli. Considerato che gli italiani bevono due -tre caffè al giorno al bar, è normale che evitino di farlo seduti a un tavolo.

Questo rituale quotidiano, che regola la vita degli italiani da nord a sud della penisola, è sempre lo stesso, le persone che si accodano al bar, si accalcano spalla a spalla per difendere la propria postazione, nell’arco di qualche minuto, e il tutto per bere tutto d’un sorso o quasi il contenuto della tazzina messagli dinnanzi. Si approfitta generalmente di questa pausa per fare due chiacchiere. Questa promiscuità, così familiare per gli italiani, rischia di subire un brutto colpo a causa delle direttive sul distanziamento sociale previste per i mesi, se non anni, a venire. “I clienti supereranno la paura di uscire in pubblico e decideranno di presentarsi?” Chiede Morello.

Secondo Ciampoli, l’esperienza è già cambiata. “Abbiamo dovuto ridurre lo spazio dei nostri clienti. Ne serviamo solo due o tre alla volta. Abbiamo anche limitato le nostre ore di lavoro semplicemente aprendo cinque giorni alla settimana anziché sei. Con l’estate alle porte le cose potrebbero andare abbastanza bene, ma una volta che l’inverno ritorna, la gestione dello spazio dei clienti sarà un problema per più di uno” spiega.

Alcuni diranno che con l’arrivo del caffè in capsula e dei banner commerciali, tutelare l’espresso fatto a partire da macchine per il caffè tradizionali sia diventato oggi un obbligo.

Ciampoli crede che il fatto di avere torrefazioni locali consumate sul posto sia un modo di far fronte alla minaccia.

“Il contenimento ci ha costretto a rivedere il nostro modello di business per limitare le perdite dal cibo offerto. Produciamo meno panini e ci concentriamo maggiormente sulla vendita di prodotti di base come pasta o conserve, e cerchiamo di promuovere il più possibile le nostre miscele di caffè con l’aiuto del nostro negozio online” sottolinea Ciampoli. Coloro che non adattano rischiano la chiusura, aggiunge. I caffè situati nel centro della città, che sono attualmente vuoti, potrebbero essere più colpiti.

In fin dei conti, indipendentemente dal fatto che l’espresso venga aggiunto o meno alla lista dell’UNESCO, se sognate di fare la fila al bancone di un bar in questo periodo di isolamento, il miglior compromesso è senza dubbio nell’ordinarvi un espresso da asporto, nell’attesa di potervi godere il vostro rituale preferito facendo due chiacchiere con il barista.

Spaghetti alla

Puttanesca An

all-time classic of Italian cuisine, spaghetti alla puttanesca is a delicious and easy recipe from the Campania and Lazio regions. The origins of the dish, as its name indicates, are often associated with the oldest profession in the world. It is said that prostitutes invented the sauce to lure customers with its powerful aroma. Some attribute it to the culinary fantasies of famous Italian actor Antonio De Curtis, better known as Totò. No matter how it got its name, this light, yet highly flavourful tomato sauce mixed with capers, black olives and anchovies is very simple to make and always a big hit. Toss in a few flakes of peperoncino to give it an extra kick.

classico di tutti i tempi della cucina italiana, gli spaghetti alla puttanesca sono una ricetta della Campania e del Lazio, deliziosa e facile da preparare. Le origini del piatto, come indica il nome stesso, sono spesso associate alla professione più antica del mondo. Preparation / Preparazione • Bring pot of water to boil and salt it. Warm 2 table spoons of oil with garlic and peperoncino in a pan over medium-low heat. Stir in capers and anchovies shortly after until garlic is slightly golden.

• Drain tomatoes, remove seeds and crush with hands. Add to pan with some salt to taste, stirring occasionally until tomatoes break down and mixture becomes saucy, about 10 minutes. When pasta is almost ready, remove garlic and stir in olives and continue to simmer.

• Scolare i pomodori, rimuovere i semini e schiacciarli con le mani. Aggiungere alla padella con un po’ di sale, mescolare di tanto in tanto finché il pomodoro non si sarà rotto e il miscuglio si fa succoso, 10 minuti circa. Quando la pasta è quasi pronta, togliere l’aglio, aggiungere le olive e lasciar cuocere a fuoco lento.

• When the pasta is al dente, drain quickly and toss with sauce adding parsley. Taste and adjust seasonings as necessary. Serve.

his legendary fried zucchini pasta was named after the beach town where it originated. It’s said to have been invented in 1952 by Maria Grazia, who owned a restaurant in Nerano near Sorrento. There are many variations of the recipe—some involve making a purée out of the fried zucchini. While the Provolone definitely adds a nice spicy touch, a good Pecorino mixed with Parmigiano will also do the trick.

This seemingly humble recipe is quick to make, exceptionally tasty and ideal for those hot summer months.

Pare che sia stata inventata nel 1952 da Maria Grazia, proprietaria di un ristorante a Nerano, vicino a Sorrento. Esistono molte varianti della ricetta, alcune delle quali includono una purea realizzata con le zucchine fritte. Mentre il provolone gli conferisce indubbiamente un bel tocco piccante, un buon pecorino mischiato con del parmigiano andranno ugualmente bene. Questa ricetta dall’apparenza modesta è veloce, eccezionalmente gustosa e ideale durante i caldi mesi estivi.

Preparation / Preparazione • In a wide skillet, fry the zucchini rounds over medium-high heat. Toss every now and then, letting the zucchini fry until golden but not brown.

• In una grande padella, far friggere le zucchine a rondelle a fuoco medio-alto. Girarle di tanto in tanto, fino a farle dorare ma non diventare marroni.

• Drain the zucchini on paper towels and season with fresh basil leaves cut by hand. Set aside.

• Scolare le zucchine su della carta da cucina e conditele con foglie fresche di basilico sminuzzate a mano. Mettere da parte.

• In the meantime, bring a pot of water to boil and salt it for the fettuccine.

• Nel frattempo, far bollire dell’acqua e aggiungere sale per le fettuccine.

• In a large pan, add the garlic cloves and olive oil over medium-low heat to infuse the oil. Remove garlic and stir in fried zucchini rounds. Add a ladle of the cooking water and stir gently until part of the zucchini become creamy.

• When the pasta is al dente, drain quickly but save about 1/2 cup of the cooking water. Toss the fettuccine in the pan using tongs, adding the grated cheese and some of the cooking water a little at a time. Pasta must be nicely coated with the mixture, not dry but not watery either. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Top with the basil leaves and serve immediately.

• In una grande padella, aggiungere l’olio d’oliva a una temperatura medio-bassa e gli spicchi d’aglio per far insaporire l’olio. Rimuovere l’aglio e aggiungere mescolando le zucchine a rondelle. Aggiungere un mestolo di acqua di cottura e mescolare delicatamente finché parte delle zucchine diventano cremose.

• Quando la pasta è al dente, scolare rapidamente ma conservare circa ½ tazza dell’acqua di cottura. Mettere le fettuccine in padella con delle pinze da cucina, aggiungendo poco alla volta il parmigiano grattugiato e parte dell’acqua di cottura.

La pasta deve risultare ben mantecata, né asciutta né aquosa.

Assaggiare e aggiustare di condimento se necessario.

Guarnire con delle foglie di basilico fresco e servire immediatamente.

ou never know what will happen. Nine in the morning July 5, 2019 and it was already hot. Cicadas buzzed. I was standing in front of a modest, wood-frame house on the south side of Earl Street in Wallaceburg—a house I had never seen—hoping to speak to whoever would answer the door.

I strode quickly to the front door and knocked. Thirty seconds later, Ms. Mary Vonesh answers. “My name is John Martinello,” I explained. “I am writing a story about a guy who used to live in this house. He told me that when he was a kid, he etched his initials into the driveway. Do you mind if I look on your driveway to see if I can find them?” Ms. Vonesh’s reply was quick and positive. For 10 minutes, I searched the driveway at the side of the house. No initials. Ms. Vonesh offered to move her car.

There they were—just as Guido Anthony Marini had told me they would be—80 years later, silent but all-seeing, in the protective shade of a Manitoba maple. In the two and a half years of walking and driving over them, Ms. Vonesh hadn’t noticed them. The letters G, A and M were etched, maybe with a piece of wire or a branch from a tree, into the concrete. Above those three letters, the word “July” is etched into the concrete too. Although the year is hidden amongst the cracks and small stones of the concrete, Guido remembers it was 1939 when his father Tony smoothed in a couple of shovels full of concrete to level a small part of the driveway. When 10-year-old Guido carved his initials into that driveway, he was doing—as he described it—“what kids do.”

This is a story of an immigrant Italian family in a small gritty southwestern Ontario town called Wallaceburg. Twenty years ago, it was known as “Glasstown.”

It starts in February 1921, when Guido’s father, a 23-year-old Italian army veteran who fought for the Allies in the First World War, disembarked from the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Melita at

Saint John, New Brunswick. When I asked Guido why his father immigrated from Carufo, Italy to Canada, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “Because they were hungry and they had no hope and they could not see that as a place where they wanted to continue to raise their families.” Tony Marini’s future wife, 20-year-old Pia Caruso of Capistrano, Italy, disembarked from the RMS Melita at Saint John four years later, in April 1925. A young woman who spoke no English and had never travelled more than 10 kilometres from her village, had sailed across an ocean to marry a man she had never met.

Marini’s Italian army buddy, Tony Caruso, recommended that Tony marry his sister Pia. On April 18, 1925, just five days after she landed in Saint John, Pia Caruso married Marini in Windsor, Ontario. Pia and Tony would never see their parents again.

But they started their own family. Guido’s sisters, Dina and Siria, were born in 1926 and 1927 at the Marini’s home on Gillard Street.

On August 30, 1929, Guido was born in the same house. One year later, the Marini’s moved to their new home on Earl Street, a home his father built.

Times were tough, but the Dominion Glass Company, the Wallaceburg Brass and Iron Manufacturing Company, the Dominion Sugar Company and the Schultz Die Casting Company were all operating. Winding slowly and always mud green, the Sydenham River carried ships with names like Superior and AA Hudson to midtown Wallaceburg’s Government Dock. At 85 metres long and 12 metres wide, these ships filled the narrow Sydenham and towered above the houses that lined Wallaceburg’s shoreline. It was in this environment that Guido’s father—a man who spoke no English and whose “only asset was his strong back”—had to find work.

It was the Depression, and Tony Marini did all he could to feed his family. Always on foot or bicycle, he mowed lawns, thinned sugar beets and worked on and off for “the Glass” or “the Brass.” Tony would be

among the dozens of men and boys who would race down Wallace Street when a ship blew its whistle as it approached the Government Dock. The whistle was a first-come-first-served call to work loading a ship at the Government Dock. Pushing handcarts laden with large cans of tomatoes, beans or large sacks of sugar, it was an opportunity for a couple of days of work and a dollar or two.

Guido recalled the “joyous day” in 1936, when his father was hired part-time to work two or three days a week at “the Glass.” The salary, a quarter an hour, was minimal. But it was the first time since his arrival in Canada that his father had any regular and predictable work. Tony’s first job at “the Glass” was in the shipping department guiding teams of horses that moved the sand, soda ash and broken glass—the raw materials for glassmaking—around the factory. In 1937, a fire at “the Glass” killed the horses. Tony was transferred to “the Batch,” where he performed backbreaking labour mixing sand, soda ash and broken glass before they were loaded into the glass furnaces. Eventually, he became a furnaceman. He ensured the blazing fires that melted the raw materials into molten glass never stopped. In 1967, after 41 years of service in the hellfire roar of “the Glass,” he retired.

Guido and his sisters also did their part to put food on the table. At the age of five, he and his sisters were collecting sugar beets that fell from the horse-drawn wagons lined up on Murray Street, waiting to unload at “the Sugar factory.” In November of each year, they would pull their own wagonloads of sugar beets to “the Sugar factory” and sell them. When I asked Guido how much they were paid for their sugar beets, he replied that “the number $7.81 stuck in his mind.”

At eight years-old, Guido was going door-to-door trying to sell subscriptions to Liberty Magazine. As he described it, “It wasn’t easy selling magazine subscriptions to people that didn’t have any money.” At nine, Guido was cleaning bird stalls at the Lambton-Kent Creamery on Fork Street. In June of 1943, two months short of the legal age for factory

work, 13-year-old Guido walked up to the personnel department of “the Brass” looking for work. He started the next day. The following summer, he started work at “the Glass.” In the roar, smoke and heat of the factory, Guido’s first job was to move—one by one and as fast as he could—freshly-formed, hot glass bottles from the glass machine to the lehr, where the bottles were annealed. “The noise of the machines and furnaces was deafening,” he said. The backs of his hands and face were always burned red by the heat of new bottles and machinery. In the summer of 1945, he applied to work in the cool quiet of the shipping department. “The Glass” had trouble finding summer help willing to work the night shift, so Guido spent that summer working night shifts, from seven in the evening to seven in the morning. Despite the long hours, the work was “just a joy.”

When one has led a full life there’s a lot to remember. But there are two days Guido will never forget. The day his parents were declared enemy aliens, and the day the manager of the Bank of Toronto walked up to his house on Earl Street.

Ten-year-old Guido was well-known to Wallaceburg police chief W.W. Worm. He was a member of Worm’s “Traffic Patrol” that protected young kids on their way to and from school and the “Boys’ Club” that drank pop and played ping-pong in the basement of Worm’s home on Gillard Street. Guido described Worm as a surrogate father that he and his family trusted, but never had he been in Worm’s office.

Guido cannot remember the exact date, but that all changed one day sometime after June 10, 1940—the day Italy declared war on the Allies.

He was an avid reader of The Windsor Star and The Wallaceburg News.

His ear was frequently glued to the family’s Phonola radio, so Italy’s declaration of war “was not a complete surprise” to the 10 year-old. But it was a day that all of Wallaceburg’s small, tight-knit Italian community— the Ricciottis, Simonatos, Martinellos, Pacciones, Celottos, Makioses, Masis and Moris—dreaded. Guido knew “Italy’s declaration of war was not good.”

Just as Guido finished his traffic patrol on James Street, one block south of the police station, Chief Worm walked by and asked him to come to his office. He knew something wasn’t right.

When he got to his office, Chief Worm told Guido to close the door and sit down. Worm slid a letter across his desk. It was from the RCMP commissioner Stuart Taylor Wood in Ottawa. Guido could not remember every detail of the letter, but he remembered seeing the words “War Measures Act” and “enemy alien” and a list of Italian names that included his parents’ names. His heart sank. He knew every name on that list. Guido started to cry and explained that his parents were naturalized citizens.

Worm asked him for help telling his parents that they would have to be fingerprinted, that they could not travel any further than Chatham without a signed pass and that they would have to report to the police station once a month. “This is ridiculous,” Guido replied, adding his father would be pretty annoyed. He wanted Worm to explain his parents’ new status as enemy aliens himself.

The following evening, Chief Worm did just that when he visited Guido’s house. There were small concessions for Guido’s parents. They could come to the police station in the dark so others would not see them as they went to be fingerprinted and they would not have to report to the police station once a month. Nonetheless, they were now enemy aliens.

And things changed. Some people who used to say hello to Guido’s mother would turn their head away as she approached them on the sidewalk. As Guido explained it, “When bad things happen, people have a tendency to blame somebody. That’s a normal human endeavour. Blame somebody. ‘Those Italians have declared war on our Allies. Mrs. Marini, she’s one of them. And the kids are just as bad.’ I don’t blame them for it.

Today, I don’t blame them. At the time it was not easy to live through.”

But things would get better.

Guido remembers 5:30 in the afternoon of Friday, October 10, 1947 like it was yesterday. It was the day before Thanksgiving. He was a student at the Chatham Business College. A car pulled up unannounced to Guido’s house. Mr. George Armstrong, manager of the Wallaceburg

Guido Anthony Marini branch of The Bank of Toronto, jumped out of the car and strode quickly to the front porch. Guido and his family banked at The Bank of Toronto, but they did not know Armstrong.

His mother thought something was wrong. Mr. Armstrong assured her everything was fine, but pointed to Guido saying, “I want to see him.”

Mrs. Marini asked, “Well, what’s he done wrong?” Armstrong replied, “Nothing.” They moved to the living room.

Mr. Armstrong offered Guido a job as a junior clerk starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. When he left, Guido asked his father if he should take the job. He would never forget his father’s reply. “Look, when I go to work, I come home all dirty and sweaty and hot,” he said. “I go in the bank, and they’re all sitting there with nice clean white shirts on. I’d take the job if I were you.”

On Tuesday, October 14, 1947, Guido strode proudly to his first day of work at The Bank of Toronto at the corner of James and Duncan Streets.

That was the first day of a 44-year banking career that took him to Toronto, Hamilton, Sudbury, Harvard University, Calgary and Edmonton, where he was promoted to vice president and general manager of the Alberta Division of The Toronto Dominion Bank. He was transferred back to Toronto in 1977 and promoted to vice president and general manager of the Ontario Southwest Division of The Toronto Dominion Bank. He retired in 1991, as senior vice president of the West Toronto and Hamilton Division of The Toronto Dominion Bank.

It wasn’t just his banking career that kept Guido very busy. On June 9, 1956, he married the love of his life, Kathryn Ann Birtles of Toronto, at Holy Rosary Church in Toronto. As he described it, “It was the smartest move I ever made.” All four of their children went on to have very successful careers thanks to their university degrees—something young Guido had never been able to afford but wanted badly.

My father, also a son of Wallaceburg’s Italian immigrant community, frequently spoke of Guido as a hero who had climbed out of Depression-era poverty to the towers of corporate power.

On a sunny July 17, 2019, I met and interviewed him for the first time.

At the end of the interview, Guido told me very quietly, “I was lucky. I hit an industry that was growing. Canada just developed into a huge manufacturing country. And there were jobs. And the country was growing.

And it was lucky that I took [the job at] the bank.”

There is a photo of Guido in the 1978 annual report of The Toronto-Dominion Bank. He was the vice president and general manager of the Ontario Southwest Division at the time. He is standing on the same floor of “the Brass,” where he worked as a 13-year-old kid. He is talking with James A. Burgess, chairman of the board of Waltec Industries (the successor company

of “the Brass”), and son of Herbert Burgess—the same Herbert Burgess that hired Guido in 1943.

At about nine on a sunny morning on August 2, 2019, I stood once again in front of Guido’s house on Earl Street under an arch of clear blue sky. The house was mostly unchanged from that 1939 July day, when he etched his initials into the driveway. There was no buzz of cicadas, just silence. Gone was the background music to Guido’s life in Wallaceburg: the round-the-clock grind and hum of factories working and ships sliding quietly up the Sydenham River. One by one the bricks in the foundation of Wallaceburg’s industrial prosperity crumbled. First to go, in 1959, was “the Schultz,” then “the Sugar factory,” “the Glass” and finally “the Brass” in 2006.

In July 1987, the black-hulled Stella Desgagnes slipped its lines from the grain elevator at Hazzard’s Marine Terminal. It was the last ship to call at Wallaceburg.

At the corner of James and Duncan Streets is a mural of the Superior riding high and proud as it approaches the Government Dock. Right across from the mural is the TD Canada Trust. It is through the doors of this same bank that 18-year-old Guido Marini started his first day of a long and successful banking career.

In 1952, Guido was transferred from Wallaceburg to The Bank of Toronto at the corner of St. Clair and Christie Streets in Toronto and never returned to live or work in Wallaceburg.

In 1967, Tony and Pia Marini moved to St. Catherines into a house that Guido bought for them.

When I called Guido to review some of his story, he confided, “We were always confident that however bad things were, it would get better. All the families were confident.”

They were confident, but one never knows for sure what the future holds. As he swung his hoe through hard times and the rock-hard clay of Wallaceburg’s sugar beet fields, Tony Marini could never know that he would retire with a pension from “the Glass,” and that his son would become a Bay Street banker.

He went on to study at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where he was told by his professor he didn’t have the “right name” to go to law school. “I knew my name was hard to pronounce and spell,” he said. “[I wondered] why would anyone’s name be a barrier to what he or she wanted to do in life?” Despite the negativity, Iacobucci received encouraging words from a colleague, who said he should go to law school, because “Canada was changing and…you could feel the change happening.”

In 1962, Iacobucci graduated from UBC’s law school. With an urge to see more of the world and continue his studies, he went to Cambridge University and met top-of-her-class Harvard Law School graduate Nancy Eastham. A pioneer for women in law, Iacobucci credits a lot of his success to Eastham for her continuous support, legal mindset and gifted editing skills in improving his work. The pair married in 1964 and moved to New York to practice law on Wall Street before returning to Canada a few years later to raise a family. Iacobucci took a professorship with the faculty of law at the University of Toronto, where he taught for 18 years and rose through administrative positions including dean of the law school, vice president and provost.

Well-respected in the law field, in 1985 Iacobucci was offered the position of deputy minister of justice and deputy attorney general of Canada. Joining the “mother of all bureaucracies” was just the beginning of Iacobucci’s contributions to Canadian law. As a civil servant he gained hands-on experience in criminal and constitutional law, including the recently enshrined 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He held the position for three years and worked on law and policy for famous Charter cases around abortion, free trade, official languages, Indigenous self-governance and most importantly constitutional amendments regarding Quebec.

In 1988, Iacobucci was appointed chief justice of the Federal Court of Canada. Three years later, he became justice to the Supreme Court of Canada. He teared up and his first words upon receiving the news of his appointment were, “I wish my mother were alive.”

Serving the Supreme Court for 13 years alongside eight other colleagues, Iacobucci felt the pressure of setting legal precedent and ruling on controversial cases. “There is a pressure that one has to [uphold] the fundamental rights and freedoms for our society. Not just at the level of concept and intellect, but at the level of everyday of life, living, fairness and justice,” he said.

well-respected academic, civil servant and jurist, Frank Iacobucci has played a fundamental role in defining Canadian law.

In 1990, Iacobucci received a phone call from then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney that would change his life forever. A position traditionally reserved for anglophones and francophones, Iacobucci made history as the first justice of Italian origin appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. “It was a journey I could not have planned,” he said.

Iacobucci showed signs of ambition, charisma and intelligence at a very early age. “My aunt asked me when I was in grade three what I wanted to do when I grew up. Apparently I said, ‘I want to work with my head.’ Looking back, there was something in it. I did want to work with my brain,” he laughed.

A smooth talker, Iacobucci was compared to criminal lawyer and leader of the Italian-Canadian community, Angelo Branca, at his elementary school graduation. The comparison left an impression on a young Iacobucci. “[That was] the seed that planted law in my mind,” he said.

Iacobucci’s journey to the gavel coincided with Canada’s transformation towards multiculturalism and the promotion of human rights. “I was on a tide of change—a tide of transformation,” he said. “[I’m] glad Canada was willing to change and transform itself.”

Born in Vancouver in 1937 to immigrant parents from Abruzzo and Calabria, Iacobucci remembers the challenges of growing up as an “enemy alien” during the Second World War. “My father lost his job at the Vancouver airport [because he was Italian]. I remember going as a five year-old with my mother [for monthly check-ins] to report to the RCMP.” Although the Italian-Canadian community in Vancouver was small and faced injustices during the war, Iacobucci believes, “The vast majority of Italian-Canadians who lived in that period never held it against Canada.”

The third of four children, Iacobucci grew up in the east end of Vancouver and expressed the stigma of growing up on “the wrong side of the tracks.” “I knew I was a minority. I preferred to say we were on the poor side of the tracks because that’s what it was,” he said.

Discouraged from speaking his mother tongue because “it was the language of the enemy,” Iacobucci regrets that his “Italian isn’t as good as it should be.” Iacobucci’s parents taught him the value of hard work, sacrifice and the importance of education, which he carried with him throughout his professional and personal life. “[My mother] would say, ‘Get an education because no one can take it away from you.’”

After retiring from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004, Iacobucci continues to sit on various boards of directors and work as legal counsel for private agencies and governments on a broad range of important files including Indigenous issues, police responses to people in crisis, SNC Lavalin and other high-profile cases.

A recipient of Queen Elizabeth II’s Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medals and a member of the Order of Canada, Iacobucci has received numerous awards, honours and recognitions throughout Canada, the United States, England and Italy.

An accolade he is very proud of receiving is honorary citizenship to his father’s hometown of Cepagatti (Pescara), Abruzzo and his mother’s hometown of Mangone (Cosenza), Calabria.

Thankful for the support and sacrifices of his family that helped shape the man he is today, Iacobucci humbly reflects on the contributions of those who came before him, “I don’t think I would have been appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada if there had not been an incredible record of achievement, engagement, an integration of Italian-Canadians within Canadian society [who contributed] greatly to the building of the country that we have today.”

Volevo lavorare usando il cervello” ha riso.

In occasione del diploma delle elementari, Iacobucci, personalità persuasiva, fu paragonato all’avvocato penalista e leader della comunità italo-canadese, Angelo Branca. Il paragone lasciò il segno sul giovane Iacobucci. “[Fu quello] il seme che mi piantò la giurisprudenza in mente” ha detto.

Il cammino di Iacobucci verso il martelletto coincise con la trasformazione del Canada verso il multiculturalismo e la promozione dei diritti umani. “Ero all’interno di un’onda di cambiamenti – un’ondata di trasformazioni…[Sono] lieto che il Canada fosse disposto a cambiare e a trasformarsi” ha aggiunto.

Nato a Vancouver nel 1937 da genitori immigrati dall’Abruzzo e dalla Calabria, Iacobucci ricorda le difficoltà di crescere

da “nemico straniero” durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. “Mio padre perse il lavoro all’aeroporto di Vancouver [perché era italiano].

I genitori di Iacobucci gli hanno trasmesso il valore dell’impegno, del sacrificio e l’importanza dello studio che ha sempre portato con se durante tutto il suo percorso professionale e personale. “[Mia madre] diceva: Studia perché nessuno può togliertelo. ” Ha continuato gli studi all’Università della Colombia Britannica (UBC) dove gli fu detto dal professore di non avere “il nome giusto” per frequentare giurisprudenza. “Sapevo che il mio nome era difficile da pronunciare e scrivere” ha affermato. “[Pensavo] per quale motivo il nome di qualcuno dovrebbe impedire a un uomo o una donna di fare ciò che vuole nella vita?” Nonostante la negatività, Iacobucci ricevette parole di incoraggiamento da un collega, che gli disse che avrebbe dovuto frequentare la scuola di legge, perché “il Canada stava cambiando… un cambiamento che si poteva avvertire.”

L’ingresso nella “madre di ogni burocrazia” fu solo l’inizio del contributo di Iacobucci alla giurisprudenza canadese. Da impiegato statale aveva acquisito esperienza sul campo in legislazione penale e costituzionale, compresa la neo sancita Carta dei Diritti e delle Libertà del 1982.

Occupò l’incarico per tre anni lavorando su leggi e procedure per famosi atti costitutivi inerenti all’aborto, al libero commercio, alle lingue ufficiali, ai governi autonomi indigeni e, soprattutto, agli emendamenti costituzionali riguardanti il Quebec.

Nel 1988, Iacobucci venne nominato Presidente del Collegio della Corte Federale del Canada e tre anni più tardi, divenne Giudice della Corte Suprema del Canada. Si commosse e le sue prime parole non appena ricevette la notizia della sua nomina furono: “Magari mia madre fosse stata viva, lei non c’è più”.

Al servizio della Corte Suprema per 13 anni assieme ad altri otto colleghi, Iacobucci ha sentito la pressione di creare precedenti giuridici e di deliberare su casi controversi. “C’è una certa pressione da sostenere per i diritti e le libertà fondamentali della nostra società. Non solo a livello concettuale o intellettuale, ma a livello di quotidianità, di vita, dell’equità e della giustizia” ha sottolineato.

Dopo essersi ritirato dalla Corte Suprema del Canada nel 2004, Iacobucci ha continuato a presiedere in vari consigli direttivi e a lavorare come consigliere legale per agenzie private e governative su una vasta gamma di documenti importanti; comprese questioni indigene, le risposte della polizia alle persone in crisi, la SNC Lavalin e altri casi di alto profilo.

Aggiudicatosi le medaglie d’oro e d’argento del giubileo della Regina Elisabetta II, nonché membro dell’Ordine del Canada, Iacobucci ha ricevuto numerosi premi, onorificenze e riconoscimenti da tutto il Canada, gli Stati Uniti, l’Inghilterra e l’Italia. anda Marcella Labricciosa est une veuve de 85 ans qui vit seule dans le midtown de Toronto. Avant la pandémie, elle passait ses journées à cuisiner pour sa famille et à se rendre avec des amis au centre communautaire italien pour participer à toutes sortes d’activités. Elle se faisait faire les ongles et les cheveux toutes les deux semaines.

Avec l’application du confinement et des mesures de distanciation social début mars, l’octogénaire a été contrainte à passer ses journées cloîtrée chez elle à regarder les nouvelles sur la RAI et à faire des stocks de pâtes et de pommes de terre. « J’ai deux réfrigérateurs, un congélateur et une chambre froide, et ce n’est toujours pas suffisant », explique-t-elle. « Je suis une mère, une grand-mère et une arrière-grand-mère. Je dois nourrir ma famille.

J’ai aussi fait des provisions de farine pour faire mes propres pâtes. » La fille de Mme Labricciosa, Mary Grace Di Iulio, faisait une épicerie par semaine pour sa mère. « Il y a tellement de nourriture chez elle qu’on pourrait y faire nos emplettes ! », raconte Di Iulio à la blague.

Mais cette grand-mère de huit petits-enfants a beau avoir d’imposantes réserves de produits et de conserves, sa famille lui a manqué terriblement, surtout pendant les premiers jours de confinement. « Je me suis sentie très seule et triste à la fois », admet Labricciosa, qui a tenté de combattre l’isolement par des appels FaceTime à ses petits-enfants et arrière-petitsenfants. « Ça nous fait prendre conscience de ce qui compte vraiment dans la vie. » Giovanni Lanni abonde dans le même sens.

Ce photographe de 34 ans a profité de cette pause forcée pour classer et retoucher ses milliers d’images, ce qu’il n’avait jamais eu le temps de faire jusqu’à maintenant. « Ç’a été un intermède intéressant. D’habitude, tout bouge si vite : les magasins sont toujours ouverts, il y a toujours du trafic. Ce confinement m’a ramené à mon enfance, une époque où les magasins étaient fermés le dimanche. On restait à la maison et on appréciait ce qu’on avait. » Une série de photos que Lanni a prises dans les chambres froides de ses grandsparents revêtait ces temps-ci une signification bien particulière. « Lorsque j’étais jeune, à part des Italiens, je ne connaissais personne qui possédait deux cuisines et une chambre froide. Ce sont des souvenirs auxquels j’attache une grande importance maintenant que mes grands-parents vieillissent. La chambre froide est synonyme d’abondance. » Et cette abondance s’est avérée très utile dans un contexte de pandémie. « Chaque fois que je vais chez ma grand-mère pour lui dire bonjour, elle a préparé des biscottis et de la sauce tomate maison. Je ne sais pas où elle s’approvisionne, car elle ne sort pas faire les

courses. Je me demande si elle a une réserve secrète », s’interroge Lanni, moqueur. « Ça m’étonne chaque fois. » Fernando Marcantonio a cherché lui aussi à voir le bon côté des choses. En tant que propriétaire d’un salon de coiffure pour hommes à Montréal, il passe normalement 12 heures par jour à couper des cheveux et à parler de sport et de politique avec ses clients. Après avoir été contraint à fermer pendant trois mois, les salons de coiffure ont eu le feu vert pour ouvrir leurs portes le 15 juin. Mais le confinement était loin d’être une longue vacance. « Lorsque tu te lèves le matin et que tu n’as nulle part où aller, ça bouleverse vraiment ton équilibre mental », explique Marcantonio. « J’ai fais beaucoup de corvées s. J’ai nettoyé les fenêtres, j’ai rangé le garage et j’ai pris les choses un jour à la fois. » Pour rester sain d’esprit, il s’est aussi mis à publier sur les médias sociaux des conseils et des vidéos sur la façon de se coiffer soi-même à la maison. « Le salon était fermé, mais bien des gens allaient toujours travailler quotidiennement ou faisait des appels en vidéoconférence de la maison et ils souhaitaient être présentables. » Ce vétéran de la coiffure masculine a même passé plusieurs heures par jour à guider des clients grâce à des sessions de coiffure virtuelles. « C’était rigolo de voir les femmes couper les cheveux de leur mari. Les hommes savaient que le résultat ne serait pas parfait, mais ils voulaient au moins avoir l’air propres. » Marcantonio raconte que ses sessions de coiffure sur FaceTime étaient très populaires et qu’il passait plusieurs heures par jours à aider des clients désespérés à se couper les cheveux eux-mêmes. « C’était fantastique, et ça m’a gardé occupé », explique-t-il. « Les gens m’ont même offert de me payer, mais j’ai refusé à tout coup. On est tous dans le même bateau, et c’est ma façon de faire ma part. La récompense, au bout du compte, c’est les relations que je construis. » L’humoriste Massimo Cannistraro, quant à lui, a décidé de mousser sa présence sur les médias sociaux en publiant presque tous les jours des capsules humoristiques sur sa vie en confinement, qu’il a passé dans la maison de sa mère à Montréal. « C’est quand même drôle, car j’ai senti que c’est moi, le parent. Un jour, ma mère voulait sortir et je lui ai dit qu’elle ne pouvait pas. Les rôles se sont inversés. Rester à la maison l’a rendu un peu maboule. » Cannistraro est surpris de constater à quel point sa productivité a augmenté depuis le début de la pandémie. « Ce qui m’étonne le plus, c’est de me rendre compte que je n’ai pas bu tant que ça, finalement. Je pensais boire beaucoup plus », note l’homme de 43 ans en s’esclaffant.

Au lieu de ça, le comédien a peaufiné ses nombreux sketches et vidéos, en plus d’améliorer ses talents de cuisinier. « J’ai même fait un gâteau de quatre étages. J’étais couvert de crémage au chocolat, de confiture de fraises et de beurre d’arachide. C’était super ! »

Bien que plusieurs aspects de la vie prépandémie lui manquent, dont l’énergie qu’il reçoit devant un public en direct, Cannistraro explique qu’il est déterminé à tirer le meilleur parti qui soit de cette situation difficile. « Je trouve de l’humour dans tout. C’est comme ça que fonctionne l’esprit d’un humoriste. On peut être triste et déprimé à propos de la situation ou on peut être heureux. Je demeure heureux, même prisonnier chez moi. Au bout du compte, je suis en vie, je respire, alors il y a incontestablement de quoi être heureux. »

Elle est la cofondatrice et la coprésidente de l’association Maydan, un OSBL transnational voué à développer la notion de citoyenneté méditerranéenne. Ariemma partage son temps entre Méans (Meana di Susa), en Italie, et Toronto, au Canada, mais se considère comme une citoyenne du monde.

Méans (commune italienne de la ville métropolitaine de Turin, dans la région du Piémont) Dimanche 22 mars 2020 – 13e jour du confinement ier était le premier jour du printemps, mais aussi le plus tragique en ce qui concerne les victimes : près de 800 décès en 24 heures.

Au même moment, de petites merveilles se sont produites. Pour la première fois depuis des lunes, des cygnes se sont réapproprié les eaux des lagunes de Venise, et on a constaté que l’air de la plaine du Pô, qui s’étend de Turin à la mer Adriatique et qui affichait récemment le plus haut taux de pollution d’Europe, était plus propre qu’il ne l’avait jamais été depuis des années.

Les conditions du confinement national ont été resserrées, alors que la police et l’armée continuent de donner des contraventions à des milliers d’Italiens qui ne respectent pas les règles et que les hôpitaux du nord de l’Italie sont au bord du gouffre. Depuis hier, il est interdit de faire des promenades ou de pratiquer des sports extérieurs. Les parcs et les aires de jeu sont fermés et, sauf pour aller au supermarché ou à la pharmacie ou pour des raisons de santé ou une urgence, nous ne pouvons nous déplacer à plus de 200 mètres de chez nous. La rumeur court que les étudiants ne retourneront pas à l’école avant septembre. À partir de demain, seules les industries jugées essentielles demeureront ouvertes. C’est pratiquement devenu de l’or liquide.

Quelques bribes de vie de la semaine dernière : un chien qui aboie comme si quelqu’un était à la porte et nous tous qui accourons pour voir s’il y a vraiment quelqu’un, conscients du fait que nous ne sommes plus habitués à avoir de la visite ; un ami qui travaille à Tunis, décolle de Rome et, tout juste avant d’atteindre l’espace aérien tunisien, est réacheminé vers l’Italie ; un don financier des bouddhistes italiens à un hôpital mobile d’évangélistes américains ; des pays d’Europe de l’Est qui confisquent des masques en provenance de Chine et destinés à l’Italie.

Des informations sur les façons de faire des dons pour combattre la crise de la COVID-19 circulent dans les médias sociaux et à la télévision, après les actualités. Toutes les chaînes diffusent des messages d’intérêt public qui expliquent aux gens comment se comporter.

La publicité à la télé aussi a changé. Un constructeur automobile invite les auditeurs à commander leur voiture en ligne, et une banque déclare son soutien à des causes anti-COVID tout en encourageant les gens à suivre les règles du confinement. Le gouvernement utilise des célébrités du monde du sport, du cinéma et de la musique pour passer ses messages et enjoindre aux jeunes de rester chez eux, alors que des musiciens jouent et chantent et que des acteurs et des auteurs récitent des textes en direct.

Je me suis rendu compte à la fin de la semaine que j’avais consacré toute mon énergie à tenter de maintenir un quotidien aussi normal que possible pour ma famille et que j’avais besoin de prendre du recul et de simplement me reposer. Vendredi soir, on a organisé un appel de groupe sur Skype avec des amis qui vivent à Padoue. On a ri et on s’est rappelé toutes sortes d’anecdotes, drôles et moins drôles. Les technologies de communication ont le grand avantage de nous permettre de rester liés et de parler avec ma famille au Canada tous les jours, nous forçant du même coup à nous demander quand sera la prochaine fois qu’on pourra se serrer dans nos bras.

Il y a des moments où je reste paralysée par l’horreur de la situation, et d’autres où je remercie

l’univers qu’on soit ensemble et en sécurité. Je suis aussi consciente qu’on a cessé de couvrir la plupart des autres nouvelles : la guerre en Syrie, les milliers de réfugiés et de migrants bloqués à la frontière entre la Grèce et la Turquie, et j’en passe.

Toutes sortes de théories conspirationnistes ont commencé à circuler à propos des causes du virus et de la façon dont la pandémie est gérée. Les politiciens continuent à entretenir des guerres idéologiques qui se propagent ensuite dans les médias sociaux. Mettre les idéologies de côté et reconnaître la valeur d’une bonne action indépendamment des couleurs politiques de ceux qui la font est un grand défi dans ce pays hautement divisé. Cela dit, à la suite d’un appel désespéré à venir en aide aux régions les plus touchées, des milliers de médecins et de membres du personnel soignant ont répondu présents. Ça n’a pas toujours été facile pour moi de vivre en Italie – à cause de ses contradictions, de son anarchie organisée et de la profonde laideur qui côtoie son incroyable beauté. Mais dans ce contexte difficile, le tissu socioculturel de l’Italie, probablement le déclencheur de son raffinement artistique, musical, architectural et philosophique, sans oublier de son sens du style et de l’innovation technologique, remonte à la surface et me rend fière des racines italiennes que m’a léguées mon père.

J’ai commencé à n’écouter que les nouvelles du soir afin de profiter de mes journées en paix. Je me réveille souvent la nuit et je peine à retrouver le sommeil. Le monde qui nous entoure nous rattrape rapidement. Des pays comme l’Espagne, la France et les États-Unis commencent à recenser des taux de contagion et de décès semblables aux nôtres. Heureusement, d’autres pays, comme le Canada, ont agi à temps pour éviter la douleur que nous éprouvons : des militaires dans la rue, des camions transportant les cadavres que les morgues locales n’arrivent plus à accueillir, des médecins qui tombent au front, victimes du virus.

Alors que j’écris, les flammes crépitent dans la cheminée et j’écoute Ella Fitzgerald et Billie Holiday, régulièrement interrompus par le chant joyeux des oiseaux à l’extérieur. J’essaye de capter ces moments ; de reconnaître la beauté des détails et d’apprécier leur caractère exceptionnel. Nous avons semé des radis, des petits pois, du basilic et de la laitue et avons commencé à repeindre l’extérieur de la maison.

Hier, nous avons passé la matinée à planter des pommes de terre et des oignons dans notre potager. Cet après-midi, à 15 h, nous avons rendez-vous dans la salle à manger. Je vais faire du pain aux bananes, et lorsque nous mangerons notre collation accompagnée d’une tasse de thé, nous nous efforcerons tous de dessiner quelque chose sur un thème que ma plus jeune aura choisi. Certains jours sont plus longs que d’autres, mais nous les remplissons de la manière la plus constructive et la plus créative possible, en attendant que ce moment de malheur finisse enfin.

Vacanze sostenibili: I soli vincitori di questa pandemia saranno gli operatori turistici del settore di nicchia sostenibile ed ecologico. Dal COVID-19 potrebbe venirne fuori un tipo di viaggi più responsabile ed etico. “Si tendeva già al viaggio sostenibile ed ecologico prima del virus e d’ora in avanti potremmo assistere ad una maggiore attenzione,” spiega Spizzirri.

“Molti dei miei viaggi sono brevi, più legati all’esperienza. Penso che questo modello diventerà più popolare. Le persone vorranno ritrovarsi in gruppi di 50, oppure si sentiranno più sicure in gruppi più piccoli? Penso che la risposta sia ovvia.”

Ad un certo momento, verrà prodotto un vaccino e diventerà accessibile in larga scala. È solo a quel punto che il turismo comincerà davvero a riprendersi dalla devastazione prodotta dal COVID-19.
