appy spring to our beloved Italian-Canadian and Italophile readers from coast to coast. As the snowbird nonni return from Florida and Arizona wondering why they immigrated to Canada rather than Australia or somewhere warmer, we collectively set our sights on summer getaways, home projects, or simply navigating the cloudy waters of our modern society (politics, finances, healthcare issues and nasty roadwork).

The first few months of 2024 brought Canadians many highs and lows, especially on the immigration front. Too many foreign students looking for work? Too many Mexicans claiming refugee status? Too many non-French speaking students applying to Quebec universities? (Not too many immigrants from Italy!)

Clearly, our system, and the wonderful, elected officials who run it, cannot handle the high influx. It seems counter-intuitive that negative discourse still surrounds immigration, when there is such an obvious shortage of workers in healthcare and education (amongst other industries) throughout our aging country—a country where one in four people (according to StatsCan) is a recent landed immigrant or a permanent resident. Countless more are sons or daughters of immigration throughout the past century. We need to attract the right, qualified people to fill the right positions; we need to urgently allocate resources to making sure that the doctors and professionals that make it to our country do not end up as Uber drivers. But what are we to expect from a government that shipped hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to a four-man basement operation to build the ArriveCan app? Cynicism abounds.

uona primavera ai nostri cari lettori italo-canadesi e italofili di tutto il paese. Mentre i nonni di rientro dalla Florida e dall’Arizona si chiedono perché siano immigrati in Canada piuttosto che in Australia o in una meta più calda, siamo tutti con lo sguardo puntato verse le vacanze estive, migliorie per la casa o semplicemente a navigare le acque torbide della società moderna (politica, finanza, problematiche della sanità e lavori stradali in corso).

Nei primi mesi del 2024, i canadesi hanno vissuto molti alti e bassi, soprattutto sul fronte dell’immigrazione. Troppi studenti stranieri in cerca di lavoro? Troppe richieste per l’ottenimento dello status di rifugiato da parte dei messicani? Troppi studenti che non parlano francese a fare domanda di ammissione nelle università del Quebec?

(Non abbastanza immigrati italiani!). È ovvio che né il sistema né quella meraviglia di funzionari che lo reggono possono gestirne l’enorme afflusso. Sembra assurdo che si parli ancora male dell’immigrazione data l’ovvia carenza di personale sanitario o di insegnanti (tra i tanti settori) in un paese che va invecchiando – un paese in cui una persona su quattro (secondo StatsCan) è un neoimmigrato o un residente permanente. Ancor di più sono i figli e le figlie dell’immigrazione dell’ultimo secolo. Bisogna attrarre le persone giuste e qualificate per occupare le giuste posizioni; bisogna che si allochino urgentemente le risorse per assicurarsi che i medici e i professionisti che riescono ad arrivare nel nostro paese non finiscano a fare i tassisti Uber. Ma cosa ci si aspetta da un governo che ha destinato milioni di dollari dei nostri contributi a un progetto improvvisato per creare l’applicazione ArriveCan? Il cinismo abbonda.

We also followed reports of the embarrassing cancellation of a reception hosted by the RH Justin Trudeau for the visiting Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy. The reason given by the PMO and Toronto Police Services was that the safety and security of all could not be guaranteed because of the proPalestine demonstration blocking the entrance and exits to the Art Gallery of Ontario, where the reception was to have taken place. Perhaps the crowd should have demonstrated at the City Hall Square or in front of the American Consulate instead of interrupting another community from meeting the local prime minister and the special guest from their heritage homeland. Stopping two G8 prime ministers from meeting may not have earned the protesters more support or fans (whether deserved or not), or the Toronto police, who had just received a fully requested budget.

The enduring Israel-Hamas conflict and the two-year continuation of the Russia-Ukraine war are ongoing sources of collective anguish. As though this was not enough, the ups and downs of the WWE-style lead-up to the election in the United States may leave Canadians, especially expats and snowbirds, uncertain about the future of our powerful neighbours to the south and greatest trade partner. The constant anxious guessing by the public on policies by the Bank of Canada and its effect on food, real estate, the economy and interest rates hits a little closer to home (and stomach) for all of us. We are especially thinking of those with mortgages up for renewal and pensioners living on a fixed income.

What are we to do?

For now, enjoy reading the magazine. Flip to page 86 and fawn over our annual “Babies of the Year” section; travel to Le Marche, the 2024 cultural capital of Italy; and enjoy the Mediterranean diet through our cover profile of Vanessa Perrone.

Otherwise, get ready to plant tomatoes on Victoria Day and the Journée nationale des Patriotes.

We at Panoram Italia were honoured to congratulate a longtime friend and supporter of the magazine on his appointment to the Senate of Canada. While an engaged community fixture in the Greater Toronto Area for decades, we introduce Mr. Toni Varone on page 18 to those less familiar with him.

He is the third Italian-Canadian senator appointed from the province of Ontario, as he joins Senator Tony Loffreda from Quebec in the upper chambers.

As we were going to press with the spring issue, we learned of the passing of the RH Brian Mulroney. Our condoglianze to the Mulroney family, friends and supporters, of which there were many during his term as prime minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993.

In 1990, Mulroney apologized for the internment of Italian-Canadians during the Second World War at a dinner attended by circa 900 guests in Vaughan and organized by the National Congress of Italian Canadians and the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association. He was the first prime minister to do so publicly, although falling short of making it an official apology in Parliament. The parliamentary apology came later in the House of Commons on May 27, 2021, by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

We will have a tribute on Mulroney’s legacy in the summer issue.

Abbiamo anche seguito le notizie della cancellazione imbarazzante di un ricevimento organizzato dal Right Honorable Justin Trudeau in occasione della visita della Premier italiana Giorgia Meloni. Le spiegazioni offerte dall’Ufficio del Primo Ministro e dai Servizi di Polizia di Toronto sono state che non era possibile garantire la sicurezza e l’incolumità di tutti a causa delle dimostrazioni in favore della Palestina che bloccavano l’ingresso e le uscite della Galleria d’Arte dell’Ontario, luogo in cui doveva tenersi il ricevimento. Magari sarebbe stato meglio che la folla dimostrasse nella piazza antistante il Municipio o davanti al Consolato americano piuttosto che evitare che un’altra comunità incontrasse il primo ministro e l’ospite d’onore proveniente dalla patria d’origine. Annullare l’incontro tra due primi ministri del G8 non ha certo fatto un favore ai dimostranti (che lo meritino o meno), né tantomeno alla polizia di Toronto che aveva appena ottenuto in toto il budget richiesto.

Il perdurare del conflitto Israele-Hamas e il prosieguo della guerra tra la Russia e l’Ucraina continuano ad essere fonte di dolore collettivo. Come se questo non bastasse, gli alti e i bassi della battaglia stile wrestling che precedono le elezioni degli Stati Uniti possono destare insicurezze nei canadesi, in particolare quelli espatriati e quelli che vi trascorrono l’inverno, per quel che riguarda il futuro dei nostri vicini più potenti a sud, nonché migliori partner commerciali. L’ansia costante di dover indovinare la politica della Banca del Canada e dei suoi effetti sul cibo, gli immobili, l’economia e i tassi d’interesse ci intacca (e ci disturba) più da vicino. Pensiamo soprattutto a quelli che devono rinnovare il mutuo e ai pensionati che vivono di un solo reddito.

Che dobbiamo fare?

Per il momento, godetevi la lettura della rivista. Andate a pagina 86 e godetevi la sezione “Bambini dell’anno”; visitate le Marche e Pesaro, capitale italiana della cultura per il 2024; godetevi la dieta mediterranea della storia di copertina di Vanessa Perrone. Altrimenti, preparatevi a piantare pomodori per il Victoria Day e la Giornata nazionale dei patrioti.

Noi di Panoram Italia siamo stati onorati di congratularci con un amico di vecchia data e sostenitore della rivista in occasione della sua nomina a senatore del Canada. Da decenni punto saldo della comunità della Grande Area di Toronto, a pagina 18 presentiamo il sig. Toni Varone a chi non lo conosceva già. Si tratta del terzo senatore italo-canadese nominato nella provincia dell’Ontario che ora raggiunge il Senatore Tony Loffreda del Quebec nelle camere alte.

Mentre ci accingevamo a stampare l’edizione primaverile, abbiamo appreso della scomparsa del Right Honorable Brian Mulroney.

Porgiamo le nostre condoglianze alla famiglia, ai suoi amici e sostenitori, questi ultimi numerosissimi durante il suo incarico di Primo Ministro del Canada dal 1984 al 1993.

Nel 1990, Mulroney si scusò per l’internamento degli italocanadesi durante la Seconda guerra mondiale in occasione di una cena tenutasi a Vaughan, alla quale parteciparono circa 900 ospiti e che fu organizzata dal Congresso nazionale degli italo-canadesi e dall’Associazione Italo-canadese delle imprese e dei professionisti (CIBPA). Fu il primo Primo ministro a farlo pubblicamente, sebbene non l’abbia fatto ufficialmente in parlamento. Le scuse parlamentari sono giunte in seguito, il 27 maggio 2021, nella Camera dei Comuni, ad opera del Primo ministro Justin Trudeau.

Il nostro tributo a Mulroney apparirà nell’uscita estiva.

Name Changes Cambi di nome

he first time St. Michael’s College School Italian Club (my alma mater) invited then City of Toronto councillor Joseph Piccininni to speak at one of our meetings, he told us the “real” story of how present-day Toronto got its name. He explained that in 1793, first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada Lord Simcoe was exploring the north shore of Lake Ontario near the mouth of the Don River from his ship.

Spyglass in hand, he uttered: “What a beautiful, safe, natural harbour around which to start a settlement.” He then asked Nicola, a mercenary sailor from Puglia, and a soldier with a musket to lower the small boat and commanded them to row ashore.

Along the short journey, Nicola exclaimed: “Dio mio, questo mi ricorda proprio di Taranto!”

Caught up in Nicola’s excitement, Lord Simcoe proclaimed, but with a different accent, “Then we shall call the new settlement Toronto.”

Nicola was proud to have been godfather to the city. And so it was that Taranto begat Toronto.

Years later, after studying more attentively the history of Upper Canada, I learned that the initial name given to the settlement at the foot of the Don was York and was only changed to Toronto in 1834. I was disappointed for Nicola but understood that local history and First Nations languages should be respected. Toronto, it turned out, sounded very much like Tkaronto, (Mohawk for “place where trees stand on water”) where local First Nation tribes met to catch fish. I accepted that the Toronto name was appropriate, reflecting the place where rivers converged, and tribes met and fished together. Indeed, today, Toronto is known as a meeting place, one of the most multicultural cities of the world.

This brings me to Toronto’s directionally correct named YongeDundas Square, which was recently rebaptized by city council as Sankofa Square. This was done to disassociate the name with the 18th century Scottish politician Henry Dundas, due to his role in

Cannocchiale in pugno, disse: “Che bel porto naturale, al sicuro, perfetto per dare vita a un insediamento”. Quindi chiese a Nicola, un marinaio mercenario pugliese, e ad un soldato con il moschetto di calare la scialuppa e comandò loro di remare fino a riva.

Durante il breve tragitto, Nicola esclamò: “Dio mio, questo mi ricorda proprio di Taranto!”.

Fattosi prendere dall’entusiasmo di Nicola, Lord Simcoe proclamò con un accento diverso: “Allora dovremmo chiamare il nuovo insediamento Toronto”.

Nicola s’inorgoglì molto di essere il padrino della città. Fu così che Taranto portò a Toronto.

Anni più tardi, dopo aver studiato con più attenzione la storia dell’Upper Canada, appresi che il primo nome dell’insediamento alla foce del Don era stato York, cambiato in Toronto nel 1834. Mi dispiacque per Nicola ma capii che la storia locale e le lingue delle First Nations (Prime Nazioni) andavano rispettate. Venne fuori che la pronuncia di “Toronto” era più simile a Tkaronto (che in Mohawk sta per “luogo in cui gli alberi si innalzano dall’acqua), luogo in cui le tribù autoctone delle First Nations si incontravano per pescare. Mi convinsi che il nome di Toronto fosse appropriato dato che si riferiva al luogo in cui i fiumi convergevano e le tribù si riunivano per pescare.

Di fatto, oggigiorno, Toronto è conosciuta per essere luogo d’incontro, una delle città più multiculturali al mondo.

Ciò mi riporta al nome da un punto di vista direzionale corretto della piazza di Yonge-Dundas, da poco ribattezzata dal consiglio comunale Sankofa Square. Scelta presa per prendere

The council left the Dundas name on the 23-kilometre east-west thoroughfare that runs parallel to the lake Ontario coastline from Agincourt to Hamilton. The proposed street name change was stopped or postponed because Dundas St. merchants complained that it would disrupt commerce. The name and signage change and disruption it would have caused was estimated to cost $12.7 million.

I, like most Toronto citizens, knew little or nothing about Henry Dundas who never came to Canada and know less about Sankofa, although there might be some immigrants from the Akan Tribe of Ghana now living in Toronto who understand the Twi language. Apparently, this tribe and area not only produced slaves but also local slave traders that were engaged in transAtlantic commerce.

I do not know why the specially tasked committee recommended and council approved a name from a far away place when there are plenty of local heroes and or First Nations languages spoken to make efforts to reconciliate and bring people together. Here are some suggested naming opportunities for the square they may have missed: Three Gord, for Gord Downie, Lightfoot and Pinsent; Chief George Armstrong, Captain of Maple Leafs fame; Piazza Sergio Marchionne for one of Canada’s best immigrants and exports; Joseph Brant, an influential and respected leader; former mayor John Tory; Jackie Shane, an American born transgender soul singer who called Toronto home and performed for years in the area. Maybe the council was preparing for the day when the square would need a sponsor and be called the Rogers Sankofa or Scotiabank Sankofa Square?

Maybe the council wanted to be more esoteric and follow the United States, which is named not after a person, race, religion, ethnic group but an idea?

For the record, I only visited Yonge-Dundas Square once.

I was not impressed with the Times Square plastic look or activities there. I will probably not revisit it now that it’s called Sankofa.

It appears that the recommendation and decision on choice or lack of choice in name change was made in camera with little or no input from the public. It’s no wonder recent surveys revealed that 60% to 80% of Torontonians do not understand or support the name change. Sad, since the name carries a beautiful meaning: the act of reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past which enables people to move forward.

Oh, the same council also changed the name of Centennial Park Stadium to the Rob Ford Stadium in honour of the late former mayor of Toronto.

Il consiglio ha lasciato il nome Dundas nei 23 chilometri della strada principale che va da Est a Ovest, parallela alla costa del lago Ontario che va da Agincourt ad Hamilton. La proposta di rinomina della strada è stata bloccata e posticipata perché i commercianti si sono lamentati che ciò avrebbe inficiato l’attività commerciale. Si è stimato che il cambio di nome e della segnaletica, unitamente ai disagi che ciò avrebbe causato sarebbe costato 12,7 milioni di dollari.

Io, come molti cittadini di Toronto, sapevo poco o niente su Henry Dundas, mai venuto in Canada, e ancora meno sulla parola Sankofa; anche se è possibile che alcuni immigrati del gruppo etnico degli Akan del Ghana adesso residenti a Toronto capiscano la lingua Twi. A quanto pare, da questo gruppo e dalla loro area venivano non solo gli schiavi ma anche i trafficanti di schiavi locali coinvolti nella tratta transatlantica.

Non so per quale motivo sia il consiglio che la commissione appositamente incaricata abbiano approvato un nome di provenienza così remota, piuttosto che sforzarsi di riconciliare e riunire la popolazione optando per eroi locali e lingue autoctone presenti in abbondanza. Ecco alcune proposte per la piazza che magari gli sono sfuggite: Three Gord – per Gord Downie, Lightfoot e Pinsent; George Armstrong, capitano dei Maple Leafs; piazza Sergio Marchionne, in quanto uno dei migliori immigrati poi esportati; Joseph Brant, leader influente e di rispetto; l’ex sindaco John Tory; Jackie Shane, cantante soul transgender americana, adottata da Toronto, città in cui si è esibita per anni.

Che il consiglio si stesse preparando per il giorno in cui la piazza avrebbe avuto bisogno di uno sponsor e sarebbe stata chiamata Piazza Rogers Sankofa o Scotiabank Sankofa Square? Che volesse essere più esoterico e seguire le orme degli Stati Uniti, che si chiamano così più per un’idea che per una persona, una razza una religione o un gruppo etnico?

Per la cronaca, sono stato in piazza Yonge-Dundas solo una volta. Non sono rimasto colpito né dall’aspetto plastico alla Time Square né dalle attività. Non penso di ritornarci adesso che si chiama Sankofa.

Pare che i consigli, la decisione sulla scelta o mancanza di scelta sul cambio di nome siano presi a porte chiuse senza quasi coinvolgere l’opinione pubblica. Non c’è da sorprendersi se alcuni recenti sondaggi hanno rivelato che tra il 60 e l’80 per cento dei torontoniani non comprende né è a favore del cambio di nome. Triste, dato che il nome ha un bel significato: l’atto di riflettere e di apprendere dal passato, cosa che consente alla gente di progredire.

Ah, lo stesso consiglio ha inoltre cambiato il nome dello stadio Centennial Park in stadio Rob Ford in onore dello scomparso ex sindaco di Toronto.

Aveva ragione Nicola!

anessa Perrone’s upbringing is steeped in rich culinary traditions from the old country.

“I think it speaks for itself with Italian culture that food is sort of central to it, but it is even more so in our family,” she reflects, recalling the many gastronomic traditions from her childhood in Laval, Quebec (a suburb just north of Montreal).

The Perrone family saw food as not just sustenance but a celebration, with Sunday dinners becoming a cherished tradition. As Perrone fondly reminisces, “We are the type of family that talks about the next meal as we are eating. Food was always top of mind and something that we were really excited about.”

Perrone found herself drawn to the intricate connection between food culture and well-being. “I’ve always had a passion for food itself, but during my studies I was always more pulled towards the sciences, and so there was a point where nutrition felt like that natural merging of food and science.”

She pursued her studies at the University of Montreal, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nutrition science. The Mediterranean diet, with its health benefits, became a focal point during Perrone’s studies. Drawing parallels between her family’s traditional southern Italian way of eating and the dietary principles recommended in school, she recognized the importance of food culture in shaping one’s health.

“Being a mom today, I see the value in that so much more.

When you’re a kid, you don’t realize how lucky you are to have that kind of a food culture,” she reflects.

“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so I wanted to venture out on my own,” adds Perrone.

True to her vision, she founded her private practice immediately after completing her master’s degree. From humble beginnings of door-to-door consultations, she has now expanded her services online, leading a team of dieticians.

Perrone’s journey as a dietician revealed a crucial gap: the lack of resources on the Mediterranean diet. Determined to share her knowledge and provide practical solutions, she ventured into the world of cookbook authorship. “There’s a lot of misconceptions around what [the Mediterranean diet] is. A lot of people think it’s the fast-food Mediterranean cuisine of today, which has nothing

The culmination of her ambition took form in the cookbook Everyday Mediterranean: A Complete Guide to the Mediterranean Diet, published in French in 2021 (Méditerranéenne : recettes et inspirations ensoleillées) and in English in 2023. A blend of cherished childhood recipes and innovative creations, the book not only offers a taste of the Mediterranean, but serves as a guide to the lifestyle it encompasses.

Her book also features a pyramid-like schematic. “The Mediterranean diet pyramid illustrates, based on research, what the principles of a Mediterranean diet are, and at the base of the pyramid is a lifestyle component,” Perrone explains. Beyond the consumption of olive oil and vegetables, she emphasizes the importance of family meals, food traditions and physical activity. “When your food culture is super strong, it protects you from all these fads and toxic diets and trends that you see online.”

“We know that when you share meals as a family it improves children’s self-esteem, it improves their body image, they do better in school, they eat more vegetables... science shows us that. Our family did it because that’s kind of where we just naturally gravitated towards.”

A dietician, entrepreneur and now author, Perrone’s journey is woven into the fabric of her family’s love for food and the rich tapestry of her Italian roots. Her culinary voyage transcends recipes— it’s a celebration of heritage, a fusion of science and tradition, and a commitment to nourishing both body and soul.

ith the current decadehigh interest rates and soaring real estate prices, the dream of homeownership has become an increasingly distant goal for many young people in Canada.

Rising costs, coupled with limited housing supply and stagnant wages has created a perfect storm that is leaving an entire generation feeling trapped in a cycle of unattainable dreams. “Just throwing money at [the problem] without throwing intelligence at it isn’t smart. We need to define what attainable housing means and tailor-make it to each province, city and urban centre,” says Toni Varone, newly appointed member to the Senate of Canada. “All governments have the understanding and willingness to do good, but then why is the crisis getting worse?”

The housing crisis is at a critical juncture in Canada and it’s an issue Varone aims to address as a Senator.

He advocates for a balanced approach to address both affordable and attainable housing through collaboration between government, industry and communities. “Let’s have an honest conversation and break down barriers. Let there be consultations. Let there be community involvement, and let people have a decision,” he states. “I’m a firm believer that you need to balance affordable housing with attainable housing. That’s hopefully what I will bring to the Senate.”

Varone is a prominent businessman, developer and philanthropist. He has earned widespread respect from the ItalianCanadian community, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and even Pope Francis for his notable contributions to charities and housing developments.

As president of the Italian Earthquake Relief Fund, he helped raise money in Canada to fund mobile hospitals to support towns devastated by the 2016 earthquakes in Italy, which were blessed by the Holy Father before there deployment to the earthquake zones. Additionally, Varone was honoured with the title of Commendatore of the Italian Republic, a prestigious accolade in Italy, recognizing his philanthropic endeavors.

he Associazione Casacalendese, a Montreal-based community group bringing together paesani of the town of Casacalenda, Molise, turns 100 this year.

The Association has seen 20 presidents come and go. The founding president was Giuseppe Mastrocola. Current president Jon Carlo Santangelo is the association’s 20th president and has been for three years. Before him, Antonio Lallitto held the post for four years.

Neither Santangelo’s parents, nor his grandparents, were part of the association. Though that didn’t stop him from getting involved with the group as a teen.

In the mid 1990s, the Associazione organized a three-week cultural exchange program for Montreal students of Casacalendese descent. Fourteen-year-old Santangelo applied and was selected for one of three spots. “It was probably one of the best summers of my teenage years,” Santangelo, now 43, recalls.

The following summer, Santangelo returned to Italy as a volunteer for the same program. By age 18, he was a member of the association’s board of directors.

Founded in 1924, the initial members of the Società Casacalendese di Mutuo Soccorso (Mutual Benefit Society for Citizens of Casacalenda) thought it sensible to set up an organization that would offer a group insurance plan and death benefits to its members. In 2003, the Association officially demutualized and changed its name to Associazione Casacalendese. There is still a group life policy, managed outside of the association’s mandate, for those who were active members before 2003.

In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the association saw a drastic decrease in membership. Under the direction of then president Pardo Bino, the board decided to change its constitution to

allow membership to women, in hopes of increasing numbers and bringing in younger members. The plan worked.

Over the years, the association oversaw a variety of activities and programs. After the 2002 earthquake in Molise, the association raised $25,000 for earthquake relief. A scholarship for university students of Casacalenda descent is now in its 50th year. The association hosts an annual banquet, quarterly general assembly meetings, and a kiosk at the annual ItalfestMtl, where the infamous bufù (a musical instrument consisting of a wooden barrel and a stick) makes its appearance.

An annual calendar that showcases photos of the hometown and association events is a hot commodity, as only 2,000 copies are printed. In just ten years, ad sales from the calendar have generated $37,000 in profit, which in turn has been donated to various non-profit organizations in Montreal.

Since taking over the presidency, Santangelo and his board have implemented some new changes.

“After COVID, members complained about the lack of communication from the association. And so, our solution was a quarterly newsletter that includes updates on our activities, member news, including deaths and submissions from members themselves.”

“Our second priority after COVID was to reinvigorate participation. Our biggest challenge is harmonizing the old world view when it comes to activities and spending, versus the new world views. You have to walk the line to harmonize both. I think we’ve done okay. And I’m happy to say that in terms of memberships, we have been net positive in the past years. We are definitely targeting young members. And let me clarify that by young, I mean 40 to 60 years of age. The majority of new members coming in are in that range,” he continues. “The trick is finding new people who are interested in being an active member, and who have the available time to do so.”

Santangelo is definitely a diplomat and makes a point to emphasize that it’s teamwork that keeps the association going. He namedrops Rosina Vincelli, who was the first woman to become a member and to this day remains an active member of the board of directors. He gives a nod to past presidents Pasquale Scardera and Pietro Molino, who both did a lot for the association and have since passed away. He calls past president Pardo Bino a “rockstar.” He gives kudos to Romano Bino, who during his presidency oversaw the demutualization of the association. Pasquale Marcogliese is the Financial Curator who oversees revenue and is meticulous about it. Santangelo could go on and on.

Anniversary celebrations will include a banquet on November 16 at Buffet Roma, a performance by Italian theatre group Gruppo Teatrale Sine-Die on May 4 and 5 at the Leonardo da Vinci Centre, and a book project. “And if we have a chance, and if the funding comes in, we are trying to get a mural to commemorate our 100 years. It’s a stretch, but we’re trying!”

Santangelo, decisamente diplomatico, sottolinea che è il lavoro di squadra a tenere in piedi l’associazione. Nomina Rosina Vincelli, che è stata la prima donna a diventare socia e che ancora oggi è un membro attivo del consiglio direttivo. Ricorda gli ex presidenti Pasquale Scardera e Pietro Molino, che hanno fatto molto per l’associazione e che nel frattempo sono scomparsi. Definisce l’ex presidente Pardo Bino come una “rockstar”. Fa i complimenti a Romano Bino, che durante la sua presidenza ha supervisionato la demutualizzazione dell’associazione. Pasquale Marcogliese, il tesoriere dell’associazione, supervisiona le entrate ed è meticoloso al riguardo. Santangelo potrebbe continuare a lungo.

ow do we share our cultural identities with the world in a positive way?

The word ‘culture’ has so many tentacles it is difficult to know when we are stepping on one that may cause pain, resentment or anger. Since there are strong nationalistic and religious ties to the word, we must be careful how we interpret its tentacles. We often find ourselves having to defend even the smallest transgressions for fear of offending others and finding ourselves in politically-incorrect situations.

I first became aware of the phrase ‘cultural appropriation’ in my university days. It was part of many academic discussions which focused on the history of colonialism, and how we as a society treat others from non-white groups. It’s a topic with many differing and sometimes uncomfortable opinions held by both students and academics. But such discussions are necessary even when history has shown they may lead to rebellion, revolution and insurgence.

Living in Toronto, it is impossible not to be aware of the many diverse ethnic communities that make up our multicultural city. We enjoy the foods, festivals, fashions, designs and activities of our varied communities and take part in neighbourhood celebrations. We have adopted many of the cultural elements and tastes in our daily lives, and enjoy and indulge in the pleasure of foods, music, languages, films, theater, literature and more. Is this wrong? I don’t believe so. Although on occasion, negative reactions from some have been problematic.

To be able to learn to cook different foods of the world in our own kitchens is a great thing, and I see this as a respectful

Rientrava nelle tante discussioni accademiche che si incentravano sulla storia del colonialismo e sul modo in cui noi, in quanto società, trattiamo altri individui appartenenti a gruppi non bianchi. Argomento in cui pullulano le opinioni discordanti e spesso scomode da parte sia degli studenti che degli intellettuali. Eppure, sono discussioni necessarie nonostante la storia abbia dimostrato che possono portare alla ribellione, alla rivolta ed all’insurrezione.

Vivendo a Toronto, è impossibile non essere consci delle svariate comunità etniche che fanno da sostrato alla multiculturalità della nostra città. Delle varie comunità apprezziamo la cucina, i festival, le mode, gli stili, le attività e partecipiamo alle feste di quartiere. Abbiamo adottato molti sapori ed elementi culturali nel nostro quotidiano, apprezzando e abbandonandoci ai piaceri della forchetta, della musica, delle lingue, dei film, delle forme teatrali, della letteratura ed altro ancora. È sbagliato? Non credo. Sebbene, a volte, le reazioni negative di alcuni siano problematiche.

uring the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Italian migrant workers—designated as sojourners by the Canadian government, and distinct from regular Italian immigrants—provided muscle and drive in developing Canada’s infrastructure. They were instrumental in producing steel, mining coal, and in building railways, bridges, and canals, often in trying conditions. Tens of thousands of Italian men came to Canada for temporary work, frequently recruited in their hometowns by labour agents called padroni.

Despite issues with discrimination, difficult work environments and an understandable degree of cultural shock, they embraced the opportunities offered in a burgeoning new country. Many of these men leveraged their sojourner status to remain in Canada and eventually have their families and relatives join them.

While initially the Canadian government did not actively encourage Italian immigration, rapid industrialization and the growth of major cities such as Toronto and Montreal created an insatiable demand for inexpensive labour. Young Italian men came in droves to work as seasonal labourers for the railways, many making repeated forays back and forth across the Atlantic.

In cities across the country, sojourners who decided to stay, helped establish vibrant neighbourhoods and plant enduring roots in the Canadian cultural landscape. Indeed, the experience of Italian sojourners was designated a national historic event by the Canadian government in 2011.

Retired educator John Sicoli’s great-grandfather, Agostino Orlando (1877-1911), was one of those sojourners. “As a child growing up in Timmins, I remember my dad retelling the story of his grandfather over and over again so that it was etched in my memory,” he recounts. “He was determined that his son would be aware of the family roots.”

Le Marche… I have been enamoured with the region ever since my first visit in 2018.

It was late May, and I was invited to Pesaro on a press tour by none other than Scavolini, the eponymous Italian kitchen company founded by brothers Valter and Elvino. It was already an auspicious invite with my two passions happily colliding. (NB. When I am not writing travel articles about Italy for Panoram, I pen design articles for shelter publications.) That particular trip reserved many wonderful surprises besides introducing me to what is now one of my favourite regions in Italy.

More on that later.

After the usual sleepless overnight transatlantic flight from Toronto, and an additional five-hour stopover in Munich, we finally arrived at the Ancona airport in Italy. While our tour group of five journalists gathered around the luggage carousel, a female passenger from Montreal, Quebec overheard us speaking English. She immediately asked if we were visiting

Era fine maggio ed ero stata invitata a Pesaro per un tour promozionale da niente poco di meno che la Scavolini, la famosissima ditta italiana di cucine fondata dai fratelli Valter ed Elvino. L’invito si prometteva già di buon auspicio dato il collimare di due mie passioni.

(N.B. Quando non sono intenta a scrivere articoli di viaggio sull’Italia per Panoram, scrivo articoli per riviste di case e design). Al di là di avermi fatto conoscere quella che oggi è una delle mie regioni italiane preferite, sono state molte le sorprese che quel viaggio aveva in serbo per me.

Ve ne parlerò a seguire.

Dopo il solito volo transoceanico insonne da Toronto, e altre cinque ore di scalo a Monaco di Baviera, finalmente arriviamo all’aeroporto italiano di Ancona. Mentre il mio gruppo composto da cinque giornalisti era raccolto al ritiro bagagli, una passeggera da Montreal, Quebec, ci ha sentito parlare in inglese. Immediatamente, ci ha chiesto se fossimo in visita dal Canada. Sembrava sorpresa e puntualizzò che da marchigiana non le era mai capitato di vedere così tanti canadesi nelle Marche

from Canada. She seemed surprised, and remarked how she (Marchigiana herself) had never seen so many Canadians in Le Marche at one time. We told her we were journalists and joked that we came to spread the word about the region. She smiled nervously and replied: “I hope not too many people find out about us here. We like to keep Le Marche a secret.”

But now that Pesaro-Urbino holds the official title of Italian Cultural Capital this year, I am afraid that secret is out.

Prior to that first visit, all I knew about Le Marche was Verdicchio wine and that disparaging saying: Meglio un morto in casa che un Marchigiano alla porta. The latter references a long-gone history when it was a Papal state and i Marchigiani were tasked to be tax collectors.

It didn’t take long to discover that this relatively unknown territory of the dreaded tax collector was an untrodden jewel in central Italy. Its varied picturesque topography is defined by its serene Adriatic coastline as much as its gentle rolling hills that contrast the rugged Apennines. They say you find all of Italy in this one region, from medieval hilltop towns, olive trees, vineyards and national parks, to 180 kilometres of pristine beaches and seaside towns like Fano and Porto Novo.

What struck me most was that it still offers a truly authentic Italian experience.

Bordering Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Umbria to the west, and Abruzzo to the south, it is like a tucked-away Tuscany, untainted by the ravages of over-tourism. And I understood perfectly why that woman in the Ancona airport expressed her dismay of that reality ever changing with too many people finding out about it.

Perhaps that’s why Pesaro 2024 has decided to share the cultural capital spotlight throughout the year, offering each of its 50 municipalities one week of fanfare—a democratic decision that hopefully will ensure the increased attention won’t result in cheapening the experience in any one place.

In this issue, we offer a glimpse into the richness of the Pesaro-Urbino region. Maureen Littlejohn covers the capital Pesaro, a UNESCO-recognized Creative City of Music and the birthplace of Rossini. I travel inland to Urbino and to the town of Fossombrone to celebrate all things Renaissance.

As I raise a glass of Verdicchio to this wonderful region that captured my heart six years ago, this is my wish: May 2024 be Le Marche’s 21st century Renaissance. As the world discovers her unique beauty and soul, may she continue to thrive, yet retain her unrivalled authenticity for future generations to enjoy.

Adesso però che Pesaro-Urbino hanno ottenuto il titolo di Capitale italiana della cultura dell’anno, temo che il segreto venga allo scoperto.

Prima di quel viaggio, le sole cose che conoscevo delle Marche erano il Verdicchio e la maldicenza secondo cui è meglio un morto in casa che un marchigiano alla porta. Quest’ultima fa riferimento a una vecchia storia risalente al periodo in cui si trattava di uno stato papale e ai marchigiani fu affidato l’incarico di fare da esattori delle tasse.

Non ci è voluto molto per scoprire che questo territorio di esattori alquanto sconosciuto fosse in realtà un gioiello dell’Italia centrale. La sua topografia singolare e variopinta è delineata tanto dalla placidità della costa adriatica quanto dalle colline sinuose in contrasto con l’asprezza dell’Appennino. Si dice che nell’unicità di questa regione si trovi tutta l’Italia, dai borghi medievali collinari, agli uliveti, alle vigne, ai parchi nazionali, ai 180 chilometri di spiagge incontaminate, alle città marittime come quelle di Fano e Porto Novo. A colpirmi di più è stato che ancor oggi offra la possibilità di vivere un’esperienza italiana verace.

Confinante a nord con l’Emilia-Romagna e la Repubblica di San Marino, a ovest con l’Umbria e a sud con l’Abruzzo, sembra un po’ una Toscana nascosta, non intaccata dal turismo selvaggio. Capii perfettamente lo sgomento di quella signora all’aeroporto di Ancona all’idea dell’impatto qualora l’avessero scoperta in troppi.

Forse è per questo che Pesaro 2024 ha deciso di distribuire i riflettori di capitale della cultura durante tutto l’anno, offrendo a ognuna delle sue 50 municipalità una settimana di fanfare; una decisione democratica che si spera faccia sì che quest’aumento d’attenzione non incida negativamente sull’esperienza in nessuna di queste località.

In quest’uscita, offriremo uno scorcio della ricchezza del territorio di Pesaro e Urbino. Maureen Littlejohn si occuperà di Pesaro, città natale di Rossini e riconosciuta dall’UNESCO Città creativa della musica. Io, invece, mi sposterò all’interno, a Urbino e nel comune di Fossombrone per celebrarne ogni tratto rinascimentale.

Nel brindare con un bicchiere di Verdicchio a questa meravigliosa regione che mi ha rubato il cuore sei anni fa, ecco il mio desiderio: Possa il 2024 diventare il Rinascimento del XXI secolo delle Marche.

Mentre il mondo si accinge a scoprirne lo splendore e lo spirito unici, possa questa continuare a prosperare, pur mantenendo per la gioia delle generazioni future la sua ineguagliabile autenticità.

Urbino’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site which retains much of its Renaissance splendour to this day.

URBINO: STEEPED IN ART, HISTORY & STAIRS Between the Metauro and the Foglia valley, 1,650 feet above sea level, lies the charming walled hilltop city of Urbino.

Known as the hometown of artist Raphael Sanzio and architect Donato Bramante, it owes much of its fame to the Duke of Montefeltro. He was a mercenary general who turned Urbino into an important Renaissance centre, attracting artists such as Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello and Raphael’s father, Giovanni Santi.

Since there isn’t a train station in town, I travelled to Urbino by bus. Thankfully, upon arrival at the bus station (ground level), there are two separate elevators that take you to the 10th floor and onto Corso Garibaldi. From there, it is a short, level walk to Piazza della Repubblica. Once you pass through one of the four city gates, you’re immediately struck by how the area is just dripping in Renaissance symmetry. Awestruck as I made my way towards Palazzo Ducale, I was also grateful to be wearing comfortable walking shoes to navigate those steep, albeit short climbs.

With just a few hours to explore this remote town of 24,000 inhabitants (comprised largely of university students), I had a quick piadina and headed off to Palazzo Ducale.

URBINO, RICCA DI ARTE, STORIA E SCALE Tra le valli del Metauro e del Foglia, a 1.650 metri sopra il livello del mare, sorge l’affascinante città collinare murata di Urbino. Nota come la città natale dell’artista Raffaello Sanzio e dell’architetto Donato Bramante, deve molta della sua fama al Duca di Montefeltro. Generale mercenario, trasformò Urbino in un importante centro rinascimentale, attirando a sé artisti come Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello e il padre di Raffaello, Giovanni Santi.

Non essendoci una stazione ferroviaria, sono arrivata a Urbino in pullman. Per fortuna, all’arrivo alla stazione degli autobus (piano terra), ci sono due diversi ascensori che portano al decimo piano e quindi in Corso Garibaldi. Da lì, il percorso a piedi che porta in Piazza della Repubblica è breve. Una volta attraversata una delle quattro porte della città, si rimane immediatamente colpiti dall’assoluta simmetria rinascimentale della zona. Nel tragitto a piedi verso Palazzo Ducale, sono stata anche felice di indossare scarpe comode, adatte ad affrontare quelle salite brevi ma ripide.

Avendo poche ore a disposizione per visitare questa cittadina remota di 24.000 abitanti (composta per lo più da studenti universitari), mi sono presa una piadina al volo per poi recarmi a Palazzo Ducale.

PALAZZO DUCALE Piazza Rinascimento I asked the founder of the popular Wonderful Marche blog, Juliana De Brito, how best to capture the true magic of this UNESCOrecognized historic centre during a brief stay. “The Palazzo Ducale is arguably the heart of Urbino’s historical narrative. Not just an architectural marvel, it’s a gateway into the past, housing the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, where visitors can immerse themselves in masterpieces by Piero della Francesca and Raphael.

The Palazzo’s intricate art, devotion and history highlight the Renaissance’s emphasis on the unity of artistic expression and cultural significance.”

PALAZZO DUCALE Piazza Rinascimento Ho chiesto alla fondatrice del popolare blog Wonderful Marche, Juliana De Brito, come fare a catturare al meglio la vera magia di questo centro storico riconosciuto dall’UNESCO nell’arco di un breve soggiorno. “Il Palazzo Ducale è senza dubbio il cuore della storia di Urbino. Non solo una meraviglia architettonica, ma anche portale sul passato in cui, essendo sede della Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, i visitatori si perdono tra capolavori di Piero della Francesca e Raffaello. L’arte intricata del Palazzo, la devozione e la storia evidenziano l’enfasi che il Rinascimento pone sull’unità dell’espressione artistica e sul suo significato culturale”.

“It allows visitors to connect personally with one of the Renaissance’s greatest minds. It’s not just about seeing where Raphael spent his early years; it’s about understanding the environment that shaped his vision and creativity,” adds De Brito.

Not far from Casa Santi is the Albornoz Fortress, built in the second half of the 14th century on the highest point of the city. “The fortress stands as a reminder of Urbino’s strategic importance and its ability to withstand the test of time, offering

Other highlights include the Oratory of the Santissimo Crocifisso della Grotta hidden beneath the Cathedral of Urbino. It consists of four chapels built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Inside the Chapel of the Resurrection is a marble Pietà sculpted by Giovanni Bandini in 1597.

Any guidebook will give you the highlights, however, it is beyond these well-trodden paths where Urbino’s true magic lies.

“The city’s narrow, winding streets and hidden courtyards are ripe for exploration. Each corner turned reveals a piece of history, a local artisan shop, or a quaint café that invites visitors to slow down and soak in the atmosphere.” This intimate connection with Urbino’s daily life is something that makes this destination even more special.

IL TRIONFO DEL CARNEVALE Spend a weekend in the Renaissance Once a year during the second weekend in May, the town of Fossombrone relives the Renaissance with their annual Trionfo del Carnevale three-day event.

Sitting on a hill slope, in the middle of the Metauro Valley, Fossombrone is a medieval town dominated by a citadel and the ruins of the Malatesta Fortress. In 1444, Galeazzo Malatesta, Lord of Pesaro, sold the town to Count Federico da Montefeltro.

Under his rule, Fossombrone enjoyed a period of prosperity due to the flourishing production of wool, paper, silk and the renovation of buildings.

Some of the streets and districts in the historic centre were born around the 15th and 16th centuries, during the period when the town held the country residence of the Della Rovere family. This particular piece of history is important as it traces the origin of the Trionfo del Carnevale—a vibrant re-enactment of the Renaissance comes to life and animates the three major streets in the city centre with more than a thousand people in period costume.

Legend has it that in February 1559, Cardinal of Urbino Giulio Della Rovere (1533-78) decided to spend the carnival period in his beloved town of Fossombrone. Both nobles and townspeople recognized the magnificence and generosity of

their Cardinal. This was one of the most significant moments experienced in Fossombrone during the Renaissance period.

Since 1990, when the diary of Atanasio di Monaldo Atanagi, (the Duke’s jester) was discovered describing the event, Fossombone decided to recreate the Historical Carnival Triumph every year.

The festival transforms the town into a lively spectacle complete with colourful costumes from the era of knights, nobles and jesters. It’s no small feat and takes a literal village to organize. Longtime volunteer Lara Scaglioni says, “We start planning the three-day event in February, four months before it happens, ensuring all recreations are authentic.” From the Renaissance costumes, music and stalls of crafts from the period, to fire shows, jesters, archers, Renaissance markets, flag-wavers and jugglers, it is the ultimate immersive experience showcasing Fossombrone’s rich history and festive spirit.

“Each of the 11 districts (contrade) has its own seamstress who makes the costumes for anyone who needs one,” says Scaglioni. During the weekend, each district also boasts a tavern with menus strictly reflecting the cuisine of the time. When night falls, the only source of light throughout the historic centre is from fire torches. “It is such a wonderful and magical time to be in Fossombrone,” says Scaglioni, which explains the 10,000 plus visitors that attend every year.

“One of my favourite parts of the event is during the horse race on Saturday; it is so silent and very emotional,” recounts Scaglioni. Each district and castle, represented by their own horsemen, compete for the victory of the Palio del Cardinale before enthusiastic spectators at Campaccio.

Parades, performers, dancers, the classifying games—they all take place amidst this evocative atmosphere recreated to celebrate the man who originally brought this special festive moment to Fossombrone during the flourishing Renaissance.

A partire dal 1990, quando venne scoperto il diario di Atanasio di Monaldo Atanagi (giullare del Duca) in cui si descriveva l’evento, Fossombrone ha deciso di ricreare ogni anno lo storico Trionfo del Carnevale.

Il festival trasforma il comune in un vivace spettacolo con tanto di costumi variopinti dell’epoca dei cavalieri, dei nobili e dei giullari. Non è cosa da poco e la sua organizzazione richiede un intero borgo. Lara Scaglioni, da tempo volontaria, afferma: “Cominciamo la pianificazione dei tre giorni a febbraio, quattro mesi prima, assicurandoci che le riproduzioni siano autentiche”. Dagli abiti rinascimentali, alla musica, alle bancarelle di prodotti d’artigianato dell’epoca, agli spettacoli di fuoco, ai giullari, agli arcieri, ai mercati rinascimentali, agli sbandieratori e ai giocolieri, è il massimo dell’esperienza immersiva in cui vengono messi in mostra lo spirito gioviale e la ricca storia di Fossombrone.

“Ognuna delle sue 11 contrade possiede una sarta propria che prepara i costumi per chiunque ne abbia bisogno” spiega Scaglioni.

Durante il fine settimana, in ogni contrada si trova una taverna con menù rigorosamente dell’epoca. Al calare della notte, l’unica fonte di luce in tutto il centro storico proviene dalle fiaccole. “Dato il suo splendore e la sua magia, è il periodo ideale per trovarsi a Fossombrone” afferma Scaglioni, la quale spiega che ogni anno si registrano oltre 10.000 visitatori.

“Una delle parti dell’evento che preferisco è la corsa dei cavalli del sabato; è un momento di silenzio molto toccante” racconta Scaglioni. Ogni contrada e castello, rappresentati dai propri fantini, compete per la vittoria del Palio del Cardinale al Campaccio davanti a un pubblico entusiasta.

Sfilate, artisti, ballerini, giochi a classifica: tutto si svolge in un’atmosfera evocativa ricreata per celebrare colui che portò per primo questa festività a Fossombrone durante il periodo fiorente del Rinascimento.

he Marche region is ringing with creative talent this year, especially of the musical variety. Nowhere is it more evident than in the coastal city of Pesaro, the birthplace of opera composer Gioachino Rossini.

The UNESCO Creative City of Music celebrates the great composer annually at the Rossini Opera Festival, launched 45 years ago.

This year the festival, which runs August 7 to 23, has been extended to 17 days instead of its usual 11. There will be four fully staged operas, instead of three, plus one concert every afternoon.

On the festival’s final day, organizers plan to really wow the audience. “At our grand closing event we’ll present 14 major opera superstars in a concert performance of the opera Il viaggio a Reims,” confirmed Adamo Lorenzetti, who is in charge of the festival’s public relations and fundraising.

The special concert rendition of Il viaggio a Reims commemorates the 40th anniversary of its first modern-era presentation at the 1984 Rossini Opera.

In addition, audiences can look forward to two new productions, Ermione, and Bianca e Falliero. Returning favourites include L’equivoco stravagante, and Il barbiere di Siviglia.

The concert lineup is just as exciting, featuring the global debut of the Messa di Ravenna for soloists, choir and orchestra. It has been revised from the sources of the Fondazione Rossini, in collaboration with Casa Ricordi, by conductor Ferdinando Sulla.

Other performances include the cantata Il vero omaggio, two operasymphonic concerts, and five Belcanto recitals.

uest’anno le Marche risuonano di creatività, soprattutto nell’ambito della musica. Da nessuna parte risulta tanto evidente quanto nella città costiera di Pesaro, città natale del compositore Gioacchino Rossini.

La Città creativa della musica UNESCO, da 45 anni, celebra annualmente il grande compositore con il Rossini Opera Festival. Quest’anno la durata del festival, che si svolgerà dal 7 al 23 agosto, è stata prolungata a 17 giorni contro i consueti 11. Al posto di tre, ci saranno ben quattro spettacoli completi di opera lirica, più un concerto al pomeriggio.

Gli organizzatori contano di lasciare il pubblico a bocca aperta nel giorno di conclusione del festival. “In occasione del grande evento conclusivo, presenteremo 14 grandi star della lirica in un concerto dell’opera Il viaggio a Reims”, ha confermato Adamo Lorenzetti, responsabile delle relazioni pubbliche e della raccolta fondi del festival.

Il concerto in versione speciale di Il viaggio a Reims commemora il quarantesimo anniversario della sua prima rappresentazione in era moderna al Rossini Opera del 1894.

Inoltre, per la gran gioia del pubblico, ci saranno due nuove produzioni, Ermione e Bianca e Falliero. Tra i grandi ritorni ci sono L’equivoco stravagante e Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Rossini’s inspiration can be found in many corners of Pesaro.

Musicians of the future are trained at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica “Gioachino Rossini.” Throughout the year, the academy is presenting a series of concerts and literary-musical conversations covering topics such as melodrama and the history of music. “Rossini did not live long in Pesaro but he was always very fond of his birthplace. The Teatro Rossini built in the 17th century was renovated in 1818 and inaugurated with Rossini’s opera La Gazza Ladra. One of Rossini’s last wishes was to donate a music conservatory to his hometown. It has now become one of the major conservatories in Italy,” explained Lorenzetti.

Casa Rossini Museum offers a personal glimpse into the composer’s life. The museum not only showcases Rossini’s home and memorabilia, but also serves as a cultural hub for music research and events. This year, the Rossini Opera Festival has organized mini-concerts from the balcony where young singers will perform opera arias accompanied by piano.

On February 29, Rossini’s birthday was honoured with the opening of the renovated Auditorium Scavolini. At the opening, his sacred work Messa di Gloria was performed.

Where did the venue get its name? Sports fans might know.

“In the 1980s and 1990s, Pesaro had a very successful basketball team called La Scavolini. The Scavolini auditorium was the historic basketball court and, in the summer, it became one of our major performance venues along with the Rossini Theatre,” explained Lorenzetti.

According to Lorenzetti, as the city unrolls its creative red carpet, the excitement in the air is palpable. “We are overjoyed.

It’s our first time as Capital of Culture, and we are looking forward to our city being filled with music, art and people from all over the world.”

Gianni Letta, president of the Rossini Foundation, agrees.

“There is no one in Pesaro who does not know that he is a fellow citizen of Rossini, and therefore does not feel the pride of living in the City of Music,” he noted at a press conference late last year.

Juliana De Brito, founder of the tourism tip website www.wonderfulMarche.com is also on board.

“Rossini’s legacy in Pesaro goes beyond music. He has become a symbol of the city’s artistic spirit, inspiring generations of musicians, composers and music lovers.”

As Pesaro tips its hat to a musical genius, what can you say but bravo to the Capital of Italian Culture?

Oltre ad esporre la casa e i cimeli dell’artista, il museo funge anche da centro culturale per ricerca ed eventi. Quest’anno, il Rossini Opera Festival ha organizzato mini concerti in balcone, in cui cantanti esordienti eseguiranno arie liriche accompagnati dal pianoforte.

Il 29 febbraio, si è commemorato il compleanno di Rossini con l’inaugurazione di un rinnovato Auditorium Scavolini, in occasione della quale è stata eseguita la sua opera sacra Messa di Gloria.

Da dove deriva il nome del centro? I tifosi sportivi potrebbero saperlo. “Negli anni Ottanta e Novanta, a Pesaro c’era una squadra di pallacanestro fortissima chiamata La Scavolini. L’auditorio Scavolini era lo storico campo da pallacanestro e, in estate, è diventato uno dei nostri maggiori centri per le rappresentazioni, assieme al Teatro Rossini” racconta Lorenzetti.

Secondo lui, l’entusiasmo della città che si appresta a stendere il tappeto rosso è palpabile. “Siamo euforici. È la nostra prima volta in qualità di Capitale della Cultura e non vediamo l’ora che la città si riempia di musica, arte e gente da tutto il mondo”.

Gianni Letta, presidente della Fondazione Rossini, concorda. “Non c’è una sola persona a Pesaro che non sappia di essere concittadino di Rossini e che non si senta quindi orgoglioso di vivere nella Città della Musica” ha fatto presente a una conferenza stampa l’anno scorso.

Anche Juliana De Brito, fondatrice di un sito che dà consigli turistici, www.wonderfulMarche.com, la pensa allo stesso modo. “Il lascito culturale di Rossini va oltre la musica. È diventato simbolo dello spirito artistico della città, fonte di ispirazione per generazioni di musicisti, compositori e amanti della musica”.

Se Pesaro fa l’inchino al suo genio della musica, non si può non dire “brava” alla Capitale della Cultura Italiana.

In July and October, some hotels on the Pesaro Riviera will become the setting for 18th century cantatas. Tafelmusik will perform on two Saturdays at selected hotels during breakfast in July, plus the ensemble will do four weekend shows out of season in October.

A quarter-century of community service Un quarto di secolo al servizio della comunità

osie Verrillo, general manager of the Congrès national des italo-canadiens du Québec and ItalfestMTL since May 2000, is leaving the community organization to devote herself to personal projects. She is not sad to end this important chapter in her professional life, as she leaves behind a well-established organization that has continued to evolve over the years.

A born organizer, she recounts how as a child, she created a Lo Zecchino d’Oro-type festival on her street, a musical show for children. Later, she studied business administration and worked for 13 years at the Mercantile Bank of Canada (Banque Nationale) as an import-export manager at the international level, but says: “What I loved most of all was organizing social activities.”

As a young mother, she volunteered for over 10 years with the SaintLeonard Figure Skating Club. She accompanied her daughters to in-

ternational competitions, organized fundraising events and shows inspired by Ice Capades and Disney on Ice. Resourceful, motivated and eager to stay away from idleness, Verrillo plunged into more than one project, going so far as to become vice-president of the Fédération de patinage artistique du Québec—an unpaid task that, along with other community involvement, kept her busy full time.

In 2000, Verrillo was offered the management and organization of Settimana Italiana three months before the event date. She accepted the challenge, admitting she had no idea about the role or mission of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians and Italian Week. As the only full-time employee, with only one summer student, she managed to turn a profit of $10,000 on a budget of $100,000. This was a first for the popular event, which at the time attracted some 30,000 visitors to the Old Port of Montreal, Dorchester Square and Parc Delorme in Saint-Leonard.

The festival has evolved over the years. While its early days were aimed at tourists passing through Old Montreal, it has relied mainly on Italian-Quebecers and Italophiles who travel to Little Italy, Montreal North, SaintLeonard, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and LaSalle since 2004. At last count in 2019, the festival had 468,000 visitors and a budget of $1 million. In 2021, Settimana Italiana permanently changed its name and image to ItalfestMTL. “We are a platform for new talent and cultural diversity in all its forms, and we evolve at the same pace as our community.”

Verrillo leaves her successor Francesca Sacerdoti a healthy organization that she will continue to oversee for some time to come.

Her greatest source of pride? To have succeeded in obtaining a space on the Place des Festivals downtown, and thus to be recognized as an organization and a community that is a must for all Montrealers. We have so many talented people and emerging artists who deserve to be known!”

Verrillo says that since 2004, the biggest challenges are the same, year after year. “Finding funding for cultural activities is a daunting task, especially within our community, as many businesses still don’t recognize the added value of a cultural activity like ours. What’s more, we have to start from scratch every year.

Recruiting volunteers (nearly sixty are needed), and the weather, are also recurring headaches.”

For the first time in 24 years, Verrillo will be able to plan a summer vacation. She intends to spend more time with her family and, of course, volunteer with a group in need of her expertise.

Abbiamo così tante persone di talento e artisti emergenti che meritano di essere conosciuti”.

Verrillo afferma che le sfide maggiori sono le stesse, anno dopo anno. “Trovare finanziamenti per le attività culturali è un compito colossale, soprattutto nella nostra comunità, perché molte aziende non riconoscono ancora il valore aggiunto di un’attività culturale come la nostra. Inoltre, ogni anno dobbiamo ripartire da zero. Anche il reclutamento dei volontari - ne servono quasi sessanta - e le condizioni meteorologiche sono un problema ricorrente”.

Per la prima volta in 24 anni, Verrillo potrà programmare le vacanze estive. Ha intenzione di trascorrere più tempo con la sua famiglia e, perché no, di impegnarsi come volontaria in un gruppo che ha bisogno della sua esperienza.

Preparation / Preparazione For the breadcrumbs • In a bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, oil and anchovies. In a small skillet, toast the anchovy breadcrumbs over medium heat for 3 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside in a bowl.

For the pasta • Heat the oil in a 1 inch 35 cm heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes or until softened. Stir in the garlic and hot pepper and cook until fragrant, 1 minute. Add the mackerel and its juice, then crumble with the back of a wooden spoon. Stir in the tomato purée and salt and pepper to taste, then let simmer for 5 minutes.

• Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Halfway through cooking, scoop out ½ cup (125 ml) of the pasta water and reserve.

Using tongs, transfer the cooked pasta directly into the hot sauce. Add the reserved cooking water and parsley, tossing to combine. Serve and garnish with the anchovy breadcrumbs.

Per il pangrattato • In una ciotola, unire il pangrattato, l’olio e le acciughe. In una piccola padella, tostare a fuoco medio il pangrattato alle acciughe per 3 minuti o fino a doratura. Mettere da parte in una ciotola.

Per la pasta • Scaldare l’olio in una padella a fondo spesso da 35 cm a fuoco medio.

Aggiungete la cipolla e fatela soffriggere per 5 minuti o finché non diventa trasparente. Aggiungete l’aglio e il peperoncino e fate cuocere per 1 minuto.

Preparation / Preparazione • Soak the dried mushrooms in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Set aside, reserving the soaking liquid.

• In a food processor, mix the onion, celery, carrot, cremini mushrooms and garlic. The food processor saves time and helps the vegetables blend in with the lentils, giving the sauce a uniform texture. This trick works for any Bolognese sauce, whether it’s with meat or vegetarian.

• Set a large pot over medium heat and add the oil. Add the processed vegetables, and sauté for 5 minutes or until softened. Stir in the tomato paste and cook evenly for 1 minute.

Add the rehydrated mushrooms and their soaking water, along with the lentils, tomato purée, thyme and basil. Stir, then bring to a boil. Add salt and pepper to taste and extra water if needed.

• Reduce the heat to medium low, cover partially, and simmer for 30 minutes or until the lentils are tender. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

• Mettere in ammollo i funghi secchi nell’acqua bollente per almeno 5 minuti.

• In un robot da cucina, lavorare la cipolla, il sedano, la carota, i funghi cremini e l’aglio. Il robot da cucina consente di risparmiare tempo e aiuta le verdure ad amalgamarsi con le lenticchie, conferendo alla salsa una consistenza uniforme. Questo è valido per qualsiasi sugo alla bolognese, sia con carne che con verdura.

• In una pentola grande a fuoco medio aggiungere l’olio. Aggiungere le verdure lavorate e soffriggere per 5 minuti o finché non si ammorbidiscono. • Ridurre il fuoco a medio-basso, coprire parzialmente e cuocere a fuoco lento per 30 minuti o finché le lenticchie non sono tenere. Aggiustare il condimento a piacere e servire. almon is simple and quick to prepare, yet many shy away from it. This recipe wraps a beautiful salmon filet in a fragrant, citrusy crust. A dish fit for a dinner party that comes together fast enough for a simple weeknight meal.

l salmone al forno è semplice e veloce da preparare, eppure molti lo evitano. Questa ricetta avvolge un bel filetto di salmone in una crosta profumata e agrumata. Un piatto adatto a una cena tra amici ma che si prepara abbastanza velocemente per un semplice pasto settimanale.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

• Place the salmon on the prepared baking sheet and evenly brush the mustard all over.

• In a bowl, combine the parsley, breadcrumbs, garlic, orange zest, lemon zest, oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to moisten the breadcrumbs evenly.

Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Un nuovo libro di ricette per preservare il patrimonio culinario del Molise alla valigia alla tavola: A journey through Molisan culinary heritage is not your usual cookbook. Instead, authors Cassandra Marsillo and Vee Di Gregorio take you on a journey to discover Molise and its Montreal community. Produced with the support of the Federazione delle Associazioni Molisane del Quebec, Panoram Italia spoke to Marsillo about this unique cookbook’s special ingredients.

When did the idea for this book come about?

I talked to the Federation in 2019 about this idea of creating a cookbook based on stories passed down orally, not only to collect the recipes themselves but to also collect the stories of the families. They also wanted to write a cookbook. So, we said: “Let’s do it together.” It took five years of work, with COVID in the way, but we did it.

Ho parlato con la Federazione nel 2019 di questa idea di creare un libro di ricette basato su storie tramandate oralmente, non solo per raccogliere le ricette in sé ma per raccogliere anche le storie delle famiglie.

Anche loro volevano scrivere un libro di cucina, allora ci siamo detti facciamolo insieme’. Ci sono voluti cinque anni di lavoro, con il Covid di mezzo, ma ce l’abbiamo fatta.

How did your affinity towards Molisan associations begin?

Through my family, I’ve always been part of two groups: the Associazione Sant’Anna di Cantalupo di Montréal and the Associazione di Fraternità Santa Maria del Molise. Every October we have this tradition of participating in the Santa Maria’s Pasta e Fagioli Festival and the Baccalà Cooked in 3 Ways Festival, organized in November by the Cantalupo Association.

Come è nato il tuo rapporto con le associazioni molisane?

Attraverso la mia famiglia, ho sempre fatto parte di due gruppi: l’Associazione Sant’Anna di Cantalupo di Montréal e l’Associazione di Fraternità Santa Maria del Molise. Ogni anno abbiamo questa tradizione di partecipare ad ottobre alla sagra della pasta e fagioli di Santa Maria e alla sagra del baccalà cucinato in 3 modi, organizzata a novembre dall’Associazione Cantalupo.

We often hear that the future of associations is in jeopardy, that younger generations are not participating in association life. Do you think so?

In some ways yes, but when you go to festivals you find 300 people from every generation. That’s why I came up with the idea for the book, because food in particular is able to bring different generations together, even people who wouldn’t usually participate.

I thought of doing a project where we talk to each association about their traditional dishes, why they are important and tell a little bit of the history of the families who prepare these dishes. It’s not just about knowing the history of the dish, but also the personal history of the dish and the history of its community through food. We did interviews with about 30 people and received 80 recipes.

Spesso si sente dire che il futuro delle associazioni è in pericolo, che le nuove generazioni non partecipano alla vita associativa.

Pensi sia così?

Per certi versi sì ma quando vai alle sagre trovi 300 persone di ogni generazione. Ecco perché mi è venuta l’idea del libro, perché il cibo in particolare è capace di riunire diverse generazioni, anche persone che di solito non parteciperebbero.

Ho pensato di fare un progetto dove parliamo con ogni associazione dei loro piatti tradizionali e del perché sono importanti e raccontare un po’ di storia delle famiglie che preparano questi piatti. Non si tratta solo di conoscere la storia del piatto, ma anche la storia personale che c’è dietro la storia della sua comunità attraverso il cibo. Abbiamo fatto interviste con una trentina di persone e abbiamo ricevuto 80 ricette.

There were a lot of recipes that came to you; 40 were published. How is the book organized?

We decided to divide the book by villages, each of which has its two recipes. We created a map of Molise, as if it were a journey from inland to the coast. The goal of the federation is to promote the associations, Molise and its culture, and this was the only way to tell the story of each individual town and its people.

I think everyone featured in the book arrived in Canada roughly between the 1950s and 1970s, but then there is also 16-year-old Matteo DeAngelis who is really interested in the history of Molise. He has been cooking since he was a child, learning from his grandmothers. He shared the recipe for casciatelli, a kind of calzone, and he even invented his own filling. Recipes are always changed or adapted in some way to continue to be a part of us and remain current. So there are stories of recipes that have changed, such as Agnone’s stuffed wafers with walnuts, lemon zest and cocoa inside. Maria Ketchian Travaglini,who made them, told me that as a child she did not like them because there

Abbiamo deciso di dividere il libro per paesi, ognuno dei quali ha le sue due ricette. Abbiamo creato una cartina del Molise come fosse un viaggio dall’entroterra fino alla costa. L’obiettivo della federazione è quello di promuovere le associazioni, il Molise e la sua cultura e questo era l’unico modo per raccontare la storia di ogni singola cittadina e delle sue persone.

Nel libro credo che tutti siano arrivati più o meno tra gli anni ‘50 e ‘70, ma poi c’è anche il giovane 16enne Matteo DeAngelis che è davvero interessato alla storia del Molise. Cucina fin da piccolo, ha imparato dalle nonne. Ha condiviso la ricetta dei “casciatelli”, una specie di calzone, e ha anche inventato il suo proprio ripieno. Le ricette vengono sempre cambiate o adattate in qualche modo per continuare a far parte di noi e rimanere attuali. Quindi ci sono storie di ricette che sono cambiate, come le ostie ripiene di Agnone con dentro noci, scorza di limone e cacao. Maria Ketchian Travaglini, che li ha preparati, mi ha detto che da piccola non le piacevano perché

was no chocolate and they were hard because of the honey hardening.

Most of the recipes are simple, because their history is one of cucina povera (the poor man’s cuisine). You had to use what was available. We are not talking about gourmet food, but still very tasty.

Is it difficult to find ingredients for these recipes from Molise since we are in Canada?

It depends; there are some recipes whose ingredients are really only found in Molise. For example, there are some snails that are only found at a certain time of the year around the end of May, in the mountains. There is a snail festival, and they are prepared with garlic that is only produced in that precise place, as well as mint.

È difficile trovare gli ingredienti per queste ricette del Molise visto che siamo in Canada?

Dipende, ci sono alcune ricette i cui ingredienti si trovano veramente solo in Molise. Per esempio, esistono delle lumache che si trovano solo in un certo periodo dell’anno, verso fine maggio, in montagna. C’è una sagra delle lumache e vengono preparate con l’aglio che si produce solo in quel luogo preciso così come la menta.

Do you already know what your next project will be?

For now, the idea is to continue to promote Dalla valigia alla tavola: A journey through Molisan culinary heritage, take it to stores and cafeterias. I would like to do a kind of public launch of the book. I also have to thank the associations because without them (who made the preorders and participated) we would not have been able to accomplish this. It is thanks to them that there was the trust to advance the money to print the book.

Then I would like to study the history of what we call “birthday cake” here. It is a sponge cake soaked in a little liqueur, with chocolate cream, vanilla and a little lemon. The “birthday cake” has kind of become a symbol of Italianness here in North America. It is really famous. My partner (who is from Italy) didn’t know it, but here everyone knows it.

Hai già in mente quale sarà il prossimo progetto?

Per il momento l’idea è di continuare a promuovere Dalla valigia alla tavola: A journey through Molisan culinary heritage, portarlo nei negozi e nelle caffetterie. Vorrei fare una sorta di lancio pubblico del libro. Devo anche ringraziare le associazioni, perché senza di loro (che hanno fatto i preordini e partecipato) non saremmo stati in grado di realizzare tutto questo. È proprio grazie a loro che c’è stata la fiducia per anticipare i soldi per la stampa del libro.

Poi mi piacerebbe studiare la storia di una torta che qui chiamiamo ‘birthday cake’. È un pan di Spagna bagnato con un po’ di liquore, con crema al cioccolato, vaniglia e un po’ limone. La birthday cake è un po’ diventata simbolo dell’italianità qui in Nord America. È veramente famosa. Il mio compagno che viene dall’Italia non la conosceva ma qui invece la conoscono tutti.

A Tale of Volcanic Wines

estled in the heart of the Mediterranean, on the island of Sicily, lies another island within an island: Mount Etna. This majestic, active volcano is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also a cradle for some of the most unique and diverse wines in the world. Living and working under the constant presence of an active volcano, Mount Etna winemakers exhibit a unique bond with their environment, characterized by both reverence and resilience.

The mineral-rich volcanic soils contribute to the distinctive flavours of Etna DOC wines, making them highly prized.

Winemakers understand that without the volcano, their wines wouldn’t possess the same character. This appreciation extends to a respect for the land and a desire to preserve its natural state, even with climate change.

The slopes of Mount Etna, with elevations ranging from 450 to 1100 metres, offer a complex geological patchwork. From the sandy, mineral-rich lower slopes to the higher elevations with porous, volcanic soils, each part of Etna tells a different story.

The eastern slopes bask in the morning sun, ripening the grapes with a gentle touch, while the northern regions, with their cooler climate, produce wines with crisp acidity and aromatic complexity.

A complex blend of minerals, ash, pumice and basalt allows for a huge range of distinct wine profiles based on both indigenous and international grapes. The volcanic soils, rich in iron and other minerals, impart a unique minerality to the wines, creating a taste that is as evocative as it is elusive.

In November, the Consorzio Tutela Vini Etna DOC, armed with a thorough understanding of the region’s unique characteristics and the distinct qualities of its terroir-influenced wines, officially declared its intention to attain DOCG status.

This is hardly surprising, given the unique characteristics of the ecosystem, and the terroir-driven, indigenous grape varieties that grow there, like Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carrincante and Catarrato (to name a few), each offering diverse expressions due to site and the care of the winemakers.

Nerello Mascalese, the star of the reds, is known for its fine tannins and elegant aromas of red fruits, herbs and a distinct minerality. Nerello Cappuccio, often playing a supporting role, adds colour and body to the blends.

Questo maestoso vulcano attivo non è solo un patrimonio dell’umanità UNESCO, ma anche la culla di alcuni dei vini più unici e diversi del mondo. Vivendo e lavorando sotto la costante presenza di un vulcano attivo, i viticoltori dell’Etna mostrano un legame unico con l’ambiente, caratterizzato da riverenza e resilienza.

I terreni vulcanici, ricchi di ferro e altri minerali, conferiscono una mineralità unica ai vini, creando un gusto tanto suggestivo quanto sfuggente.

A novembre, il Consorzio Tutela Vini Etna DOC, forte di una conoscenza approfondita delle caratteristiche uniche della regione e delle qualità distintive dei suoi vini influenzati dal terroir, ha dichiarato ufficialmente la sua intenzione di ottenere lo status di DOCG. Non c’è da stupirsi, viste le caratteristiche uniche dell’ecosistema e dei vitigni autoctoni che vi crescono, come il Nerello Mascalese, il Nerello Cappuccio, il Carrincante e il Catarrato (per citarne alcuni), ognuno dei quali offre espressioni diverse dovute al sito e alla cura dei viticoltori.

Il Nerello Mascalese, la star dei rossi, è noto per i suoi tannini fini e gli eleganti aromi di frutti rossi, erbe e una spiccata mineralità.

Frank Cornelissen Frank Cornelissen, a visionary Belgian winemaker has carved out a unique niche in the world of viticulture with his distinctive, lowintervention approach to winemaking. Arriving at Mount Etna in 2001, Cornelissen was captivated by the imposing, snow-blanketed volcano and saw it as the perfect setting for his winemaking vision.

His philosophy centres on minimal intervention and a deep respect for nature, following an organic and biodynamic approach.

Some of his wines, like the Munjebel, are single contrada (cru) and vintage wines. He aims to produce wines that are profound and territorially authentic, achieved by maintaining low grape yields and engaging in meticulous, hands-on processes and minimal use of sulphur.

The Munjebel 2021 is particularly notable. This is 100% variety of Nerello Mascalese, and is a celebrated wine for its unique expression of Etna terroir. Notes of black cherries, raspberries, warm cinnamon spice paired with slightly animal tones and complex mineral highlights. The palate is round and bright, having a crisp acidity, with firm, muscular tannins. Elegant, layered, with so much flavour and persistent minerality. Gorgeous, yet needs a bit of time. ($56)

was a rainy day in Pizzaville when the iconic food company first came on the scene some 60 years ago. Originally founded by husband-and-wife team Teddy and Beverley Adelman, the key to the company’s success is not only found in the oven-baked crust, (Pizzaville’s pizzas are always baked in stone ovens) but in its core value—a focus on family. “Stone baking delivers that authentic pizza taste,” said Angelo Contardi, reflecting on why customers keep coming back for more.

He, along with wife Nella, have been at the helm of Pizzaville since 1979, when Angelo acquired the company after the passing of Teddy Adelman.

A career in the pizza industry wasn’t always on Angelo’s mind. In his mid 20s, he acquired his MBA, was working at KPMG and towards a CA when his father, Marco, became ill with lung cancer and was given a short time to live.

Having lost his mother a few years earlier, Angelo immediately quit KPMG and put all his effort into buying his father more time. “Nothing mattered except helping my father,” shared Angelo, reflecting on that painful period of his life. He contacted various specialists and researched the work being done with a controversial new drug offered in a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico.

With nothing to lose, Angelo and his father started their journey.

“I planned everything as quickly as possible, and it didn’t take long for my dad and I to get to San Diego, where we would drive across the border to Tijuana for the treatments.”

This was the same clinic in which some celebrities, like actor Steve McQueen, sought treatment. Angelo admits it was the most difficult time of his life: “We had to drive through some of the most dangerous parts of Mexico to get to the clinic. I had no credit card, no cellphone obviously. But I needed to find

hen the M.S. Vulcania finally docked at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, it marked the end of a long journey for the Murdocco family but the beginning of their fortunate entrepreneurial career. The year was 1951, and nine-year-old Francesco (Frank) Murdocco, setting foot in his new country, briefly reminisced about his friends and relatives left behind in Mammola, Calabria. However, the thought of the new life awaiting the family in Montreal, Quebec was more exciting to the strong-willed, audacious boy.

“My family lived in Montreal for several years. I grew up and worked there, and then became a shareholder in the Boulangerie Marguerita Pizza, the best pizza joint in town. After a few years, I decided to go west and start a business according to my vision, and I chose Vancouver. I had some family in Vancouver. My sister owned Calabria Bakery, and they were doing well.” Frank smiles and gestures at the crowded tables of Caffè Calabria while he serves his famous cappuccino to customers ogling the tantalizing pastries displayed on the massive marble counter. He opened the Caffè in 1976 and still works there every day with his three sons, Vincenzo (Vince), Nicodemo (Nick) and Frank Jr. The oldest coffee house in Vancouver opens from 6:00 in the morning to 9:00 at night, seven days a week.

“We take turns. This place is always busy, but this is our family business. To us, our customers are family. When I came from Montreal many years ago, I thought Vancouver was 20 years behind, still a marginal city, but I considered that an opportunity. I am not afraid of taking risks.”

His attitude paid off. Soon, Caffè Calabria became the “it” spot, and its fame continued to grow until it became Commercial Drive’s iconic landmark, a place one must visit at least once or, as Frank quips: “It would be like going to Rome and not seeing the Colosseum.”

Vince explains: “Coffee brings families together. Back in the 1970s, coffee culture in Vancouver was geared towards men.

Vince, Frank’s middle son, is an articulate, savvy businessman and a former kickboxing champion. He won the shoot boxing champion title in Japan in 1988, among many other titles, and starred in 20 martial arts movies, three times in the title role and 17 co-starring roles. He is currently producing a comedy film titled The Italians Are Coming! about three brothers taking over their father’s business. Even if work at the coffee house is at the centre of his life, Vince always wanted to cultivate other interests and branch out, following his family’s attitude of an open-minded enterprise.

Francesco also had a chance at acting. He co-starred in an episode of the popular television series Wiseguy, filmed in Vancouver and running from 1987 to 1990. He remembers: “Two guys came here for coffee. I did not know that they were movie directors. I was working at the counter, and they heard me speaking broken English. So, they approached me offering a speaking role in an episode, saying they would pay me $1,000 for a day, but it was like a full 24-hour workday because I had to wait and be ready anytime. I said I would do it only if they paid me $2,000, and they accepted. You see, everybody comes here: actors, big businessmen, lawyers, celebrities. I love this place; I love my work.

I am bringing Italian heritage and history here. Look at the frescoes, at the statues, at the decor. It’s unique. It’s an homage to Italian art.

Sometimes, people ask me why I don’t retire? Why should I? You are as young as you feel you are. I have three sons and eight grandchildren.

My wife’s grandfather married twice and had 24 children. Family and work are everything for us.”

It’s hard to get a table at Caffè Calabria; it’s always crowded. The temptation is to linger after finishing the delicious food. The carefree chatting, the warm atmosphere, everything there conjures up a sense of belonging and justifies what the second of the four Murdocco family’s commandments playfully recites: “Thou shalt drink no other coffee.”

What dialects are still spoken among Italians in Montreal?

Practically all of them: Friulian, Sardinian, Sicilian, Neapolitan and so on. What is really surprising is that we also find minority dialect languages which are rare even in Italy, namely “Arbëresh,” a language of Albanian origin, brought to southern Italy in the 15th century, and Faetar, a variant of Provençal French spoken in the municipalities of Faeto and Celle di San Vito, which are located in the province of Foggia.

Why do you take such an interest in the dialect spoken by Italians in Canada, and particularly those in Montreal?

Older Italian immigrants from Montreal spoke mainly in dialect in their homes, partly because they were poorly educated. Such dialects were often not intelligible to each other. Hence emerged the need to invent an idiom understandable to all, which became one of the unifying factors of the diverse Italian community. By mixing dialect, Italian, French and English terms, an idiom typical and exclusive to the city of Montreal emerged.

hanks to a new sociolinguistic study, McGill University researcher Fabio Scetti has observed that Italians in Montreal have invented a unique slang not heard among Italians in the United States, Australia or even Argentina. This slang is a distinctive linguistic mix of French, English, Italian and dialects spoken in southern Italy. Scetti wanted to understand how language has become an identity marker and a strong unifying element within Montreal’s Italian community.

He conducted his research on Italians who arrived in Montreal after 1950 during the second great wave of migration, and studied mainly those who came from the south of the country and from a rural background. Panoram Italia wanted to understand the phenomenon a little better.

Why in Montreal and not also in Toronto?

For the simple fact that French is really a minority in Ontario.

In Montreal, on the other hand, our compatriots often found themselves working on behalf of English speakers but in close contact with French-speaking workers. This is how English, French, Italian and dialects mingled with each other resulting in something at once unique and exclusive.

In Toronto, the idiom invented by the Italians is devoid of French words or words traceable to French. It was studied as early as 1985 by Professor Clivio, who called that idiom the “Italese.” Instead, in 2010 Professor Villata devoted himself to the study of Italian “Montrealese” giving it the name of “Italianese” precisely to distinguish it from the “Italese” used in Anglo-Saxon countries.

Perché a Montréal e non anche a Toronto?

Per il semplice fatto che in Ontario il francese è davvero minoritario. A Montréal invece, i nostri connazionali si trovavano spesso a lavorare per conto di anglofoni ma a stretto contatto con lavoratori francofoni. È così che inglese, francese, italiano e i dialetti si sono mescolati tra loro dando vita a qualcosa al tempo stesso di unico ed esclusivo.

A Toronto l’idioma inventato dagli Italiani è privo di parole francesi o riconducibili al francese. Fu studiato già dal 1985 dal professore Clivio che chiamò tale idioma l’italese. Invece nel 2010 il professor Villata si dedicò allo studio dell’italiano “Montréalese” dandogli il nome d’italianese, proprio per distinguerlo dall’italese usato nei paesi anglosassoni.

Can you give us some examples of the “Italianese” of Montreal?

Thus they have appropriated an urban and city space that is not theirs or the one in which they were born.

When the last elderly Italians will leave, what will happen to this idiom?

Well, the task of my research is to first of all preserve this language, putting it on paper, to prevent it from getting lost.

Will it then be a dead language?

Rather than dying, I think it will evolve into something else.

Moreover, the children of the old emigrants still use such idioms.

As for those of us, who arrived here already grown up and in the 2000s, in my opinion they will sooner or later invent something new. It will mirror how they have found their identity as Italians abroad, and particularly in a French- and English-speaking city.

Finally, in my opinion, it is important to point out that this slang is mostly used among elderly Italians who did not attend school here, in Montreal, or among their children and grandchildren who attended Anglophone schools.

This is because, in Quebec, Francophone identity is much stronger and more solid than Anglophone identity. If we compare it with American or Ontario identities, we see that Montreal’s Anglophone culture is not of the same nature and does not have the same assimilation power. Rather, it functions as a container for different non-French Canadian identities: from Italian to Pakistani, from Jamaican to Jewish, not to mention that of the Anglophones who come from Vancouver or Toronto to settle here.

In this container, each ethnolinguistic group occupies its own space, without renouncing its relationship with the other groups, but without merging into a single entity or becoming confused with it. This coexistence has allowed the Italian community to preserve not only its specific national identity, but also a local one from its native villages. It was also through contact with the English-speaking culture of Montreal that Italian-Montrealers invented unique cultural and linguistic traits.

Ma anche i nomi di strade vero?

Esatto. Quindi il marché Jean-Talon diventa “marchetto Jean-Tallone” e il boulevard Saint-Laurent si trasforma in “San Lorenzo”. In tal modo si sono appropriati di uno spazio urbano e cittadino che non è il loro o quello in cui erano nati.

Quando anche gli ultimi anziani italiani se ne andranno via, cosa succederà a questo idioma?

Beh, in primo luogo il compito della ricerca è giustamente anche quello di conservare, mettendo nero su bianco questo linguaggio, per evitare che si perdi.

Sarà poi una lingua morta?

Più che morire io credo che si evolverà verso altri percorsi. Oltretutto i figli degli anziani emigranti usano ancora tale idioma. Quanto a quelli come noi, arrivati qui già grandicelli e negli anni 2000, a mio avviso prima o poi inventeranno qualcosa di nuovo. Sarà lo specchio di come essi hanno rifondano la propria identità di italiani all’estero, ed in particolare in una città francofona ed anglofona.

Infine, secondo me, è importante sottolineare che questo slang è usato soprattutto tra gli anziani italiani che non hanno frequentato la scuola qui, a Montréal, o tra i loro figli e nipoti che hanno frequentato scuole anglofone.

Ciò è dovuto al fatto che, in Québec, l’identità francofona è molto più forte e solida di quella anglofona. Se la confrontiamo con le identità americane o dell’Ontario, vediamo che la cultura anglofona di Montréal non è della stessa natura e non ha lo stesso potere di assimilazione. Funziona piuttosto come un contenitore per diverse identità non franco-canadesi: dall’italiano al pakistano, dal giamaicano all’ebreo, senza dimenticare quella degli anglofoni che da Vancouver o Toronto vengono a stabilirsi qui. In questo contenitore ciascun gruppo etnolinguistico occupa il proprio spazio, senza rinunciare ad entrare in relazione con gli altri gruppi, ma senza fondersi in un’unica entità né confondersi con essa. Questa convivenza ha consentito alla comunità italiana di preservare la propria specifica identità nazionale, ma anche locale, quella del paese di origine. È stato anche attraverso il contatto con la cultura anglofona di Montréal che gli italo-Montrealesi hanno inventato tratti culturali e linguistici unici.

CASA D’ITALIA MONTREAL Inaugurating a new board of directors Casa D’Italia Montreal elected its 2024 board of directors November 6 with new president, Perry Mazzanti inaugurating the team and expressing his gratitude to all the members who took part in the organization’s General Assembly.

Since 1936, Casa D’Italia Montreal and its Little Italy Community Centre has served Italian immigrants and the community at-large by being a guardian of Italy’s dynamic culture through its numerous engagements consisting of literary, music, film and art events as well as language classes.

A 60-YEAR MILESTONE Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada On February 13, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada (ICCC) held its 60th anniversary festivity in Montreal. The ICCC was proud to announce an exciting year ahead with initiatives that include a new spring event focusing on sustainability and a commitment to a thriving sector

for Canada and Italy, an annual meeting of the Italian Chamber of Commerce from the NAFTA area, the Canada-Italy Forum on AI and finally, the organization’s prestigious Premio Venezia ceremony honouring Made in Italy and Made in Quebec Excellence.

SOULFUL EVENING FOR HEALTHCARE Marie-Clarac Hospital Foundation Montreal music lovers gathered at a special benefit concert December 8 to raise funds and support the city’s essential Marie-Clarac Hospital Foundation (MCHF). Hosted by the Caisse Populaire Desjardins Canadienne Italienne, the organization’s general manager, Mariano De Carolis was honoured to present Sister Martine Côté, general director of the

Marie-Clarac Hospital, with a donation of $100,000 - charitable proceeds raised from the evening. The success of this event has ensured the purchase of new, state-of-the-art beds which will contribute to hospital patient recovery and rehabilitation as well as end-of-life care.

MENDING BROKEN HEARTS Raising funds for cardiac care 1.

Hearts united at the Mending Broken Hearts Dinner & Dance presented by the Canadian Italian Business & Professional Association of Toronto’s Education Foundation. The Valentine’s Day gala held appropriately on February 14 in Vaughan, raised over $100,000 in proceeds to support the St. Michael’s Hospital’s Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) program and its funding of the establishment of an Endowed Chair in MICS at the renowned hospital as well as the University of Toronto. The evening also honoured some of the community’s finest with the CIBPA of Toronto Community Leadership award presented to Joe Vitale (President, Italpasta LTD.) and Aldo De Felice (President, TLN Media Group). In addition to inspiring speeches by Dr. Gianluigi Bisleri, director of the MICS program and his cardiac surgery patient, Ron DiFrancesco, a survivor of the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, the event also was graced by Premier Doug Ford who spoke of the great philanthropy exhibited by Ontario’s Italian-Canadian community.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER Where poetry and art meet Friends in Art and Villa Charities launched its multi-dimensional exhibit February 1 at the Joseph D. Spirits were high as grassroots organization, Hospice Vaughan, celebrated a record-breaking fundraiser at its annual Hearts Gala with a staggering $1.2 million raised for palliative care.

Held February 9 in Vaughan and presented by Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre, the charity gala also exceeded its attendance goal, boasting 1300 guests. The evening also honoured the late Alexander Muzzo, a dedicated community advocate whose dedication to providing end-of-life care to local residents was instrumental in developing Hospice Vaughan as it is known today and its transformation from a visiting hospice to a free-of-charge, residential facility with coinciding programs.

Vanessa Perrone Nourrir le corps et l’âme avec le régime méditerranéen Par Joey Franco

L’

éducation de Vanessa Perrone est ancrée dans les riches traditions culinaires du Vieux Continent. « Il est plus qu’évident que la nourriture joue un rôle central dans la culture italienne, mais c’est encore plus vrai dans notre famille », déclare cette dernière en évoquant les nombreuses traditions gastronomiques de son enfance à Laval, au Québec (dans la banlieue nord de Montréal).

Pour la famille Perrone, la nourriture n’est pas seulement un aliment, c’est aussi une fête, et les dîners du dimanche ont toujours été une tradition très prisée. Comme le rappelle Perrone, « nous sommes le genre de famille qui parle du prochain repas tout en mangeant. Nous pensons toujours à la nourriture.

Nous sommes très enthousiastes à ce sujet ».

Sa formation culinaire a commencé sous l’œil attentif de sa grand-mère maternelle, une formidable boulangère qui préparait tout de A à Z, du pain aux pâtes. Perrone se souvient parfaitement de la sauce tomate maison, des saucisses assaisonnées et de l’odeur inimitable du pain Mafalda aux graines de sésame. « J’ai grandi en allant à l’école primaire avec un sandwich pour le repas du midi 180 jours par an, et c’était toujours le pain Mafalda aux graines de sésame fait maison par ma grand-mère.

Je n’ai jamais mangé de pain du commerce. » Perrone a toujours été attirée par le lien étroit entre la culture alimentaire et le bien-être. « J’ai toujours eu une passion pour la nourriture, mais dans mes études, j’ai toujours été plus attirée par

les sciences, et à un moment donné, la nutrition m’a semblé être une fusion naturelle entre la nourriture et la science. » Elle a poursuivi ses études à l’Université de Montréal, où elle a obtenu un baccalauréat et une maîtrise en sciences de la nutrition. Le régime méditerranéen, avec ses bienfaits pour la santé, est devenu un point central de ses recherches. En établissant des parallèles entre le mode d’alimentation de sa famille dans le sud de l’Italie et les principes diététiques recommandés à l’école, elle a compris à quel point la culture alimentaire a des retombées sur la santé. « Aujourd’hui, en tant que mère, j’en vois encore plus la valeur.

Quand on est enfant, on ne se rend pas compte de la chance que l’on a d’avoir une telle culture alimentaire », explique Perrone. « J’ai toujours eu l’esprit d’entreprise, alors j’ai voulu me lancer à mon compte », ajoute-telle. Fidèle à sa vision, Perrone a fondé son cabinet privé peu après avoir obtenu sa maîtrise. Après des débuts modestes en tant que consultante faisant du porte-àporte, elle offre maintenant ses services en ligne, à la tête d’une équipe de diététiciens.

Le parcours de Perrone en tant que diététicienne a révélé une lacune cruciale : le manque de ressources sur le régime méditerranéen. Déterminée à partager ses connaissances et à fournir des solutions pratiques, elle s’est aventurée dans le monde des livres de cuisine. « Il y a beaucoup de fausses idées sur ce qu’est le régime méditerranéen.

Bien des gens pensent qu’il s’agit de la cuisine méditerranéenne rapide d’aujourd’hui, qui n’a rien à voir avec le modèle traditionnel. » Son ambition s’est concrétisée dans le livre de cuisine Méditerranéenne : recettes et inspirations

ensoleillées, publié en français en 2021 et en anglais en 2023 (Everyday Mediterranean: A Complete Guide to the Mediterranean Diet). Ce livre, qui mêle recettes d’enfance et créations innovantes, offre non seulement un avant-goût de la Méditerranée, mais sert également de guide pour le mode de vie qu’englobe ce régime. « Je voulais vraiment instruire les gens, leur fournir une ressource, et des recettes adaptées à la réalité d’aujourd’hui. Une fois que vous connaissez les principes du régime méditerranéen, où que vous soyez au Canada, vous pouvez le reproduire. » Le livre présente par ailleurs un schéma pyramidal. « La pyramide du régime méditerranéen illustre, sur la base de recherches, les principes du régime méditerranéen, et à la base de la pyramide, il y a le mode de vie », explique Perrone. Outre la consommation d’huile d’olive et de légumes, elle souligne l’importance des repas en famille, des traditions alimentaires et de l’activité physique. « Lorsque la culture alimentaire est très forte, elle nous protège de toutes les modes, de tous les régimes toxiques et de toutes les tendances que l’on peut voir en ligne », explique-t-elle. « Nous savons que le fait de partager des repas en famille améliore l’estime de soi des enfants, leur image corporelle, leurs résultats scolaires, leur consommation de légumes… la science nous le prouve. Notre famille l’a fait naturellement. » Diététicienne, chef d’entreprise et aujourd’hui autrice, Perrone doit son parcours à l’amour de sa famille pour la nourriture et à ses profondes racines italiennes. Son parcours culinaire va au-delà des recettes : il s’agit d’une célébration de l’héritage, d’une fusion de la science et de la tradition et d’un engagement à nourrir le corps et l’esprit.

L’association Casacalendese fête ses 100 ans Par Agata De Santis

L’Associazione Casacalendese, un groupe communautaire basé à Montréal qui rassemble les paesani de la ville de Casacalenda, dans le Molise, fête ses 100 ans cette année. L’association a vu défiler 20 présidents. Le président fondateur était Giuseppe Mastrocola.

Le président actuel, Jon Carlo Santangelo, est depuis trois ans le 20e président de l’association.

Avant lui, Antonio Lallitto a occupé ce poste pendant quatre ans.

Ni les parents ni les grandsparents de Santangelo ne faisaient partie de l’association. Cela ne l’a pas empêché de s’impliquer dans le groupe dès son adolescence. Au milieu des années 1990, l’Associazione a organisé un échange culturel de trois semaines pour les étudiants montréalais d’origine casacalendaise. Santangelo, âgé de 14 ans, a posé sa candidature et a été sélectionné pour l’une des trois places. « Ce fut probablement l’un des meilleurs étés de mon adolescence », se souvient M. Santangelo, aujourd’hui âgé de 43 ans.

L’été suivant, Santangelo est retourné en Italie en tant que volontaire pour le même programme. À l’âge de 18 ans, il est devenu membre du conseil d’administration de l’association.

Les premiers membres de la Società Casacalendese di Mutuo Soccorso (Société de secours mutuel pour les citoyens de Casacalenda), fondée en 1924, ont jugé bon de créer une organisation qui offrirait à ses membres un régime d’assurance collective et des prestations en cas de décès. En 2003, l’association s’est officiellement démutualisée et a changé de nom pour devenir l’Associazione Casacalendese.

Il existe toujours une police d’assurance-vie de groupe, gérée en dehors du mandat de

l’association, pour les personnes qui étaient membres actifs avant 2003.

Dans les années 1960, 1970 et 1980, l’association a connu une importante baisse du nombre de ses membres. Sous la direction du président de l’époque, M. Pardo Bino, le conseil d’administration a décidé de modifier ses statuts pour permettre aux femmes d’adhérer à l’association, dans l’espoir d’augmenter le nombre de membres et d’en attirer de plus jeunes.

Le plan a fonctionné.

Au fil des ans, l’association a supervisé toute une série d’activités et de programmes. Après le tremblement de terre qui a frappé le Molise en 2002, l’association a réuni 25 000 $ pour les secours. Une bourse d’études pour les étudiants universitaires originaires de Casacalenda en est maintenant à sa 50e année d’existence. L’association organise un banquet annuel, des réunions trimestrielles de l’assemblée générale et un kiosque à l’ItalfestMTL, où le fameux bufù (instrument de musique composé d’un tonneau en bois et d’une baguette) est toujours de la partie.

Le calendrier annuel, qui présente des photos de la ville et des événements de l’association, est très prisé, car il n’est imprimé qu’à 2 000 exemplaires. En 10 ans seulement, les ventes d’annonces du calendrier ont généré 37 000 $ de bénéfices, qui ont été reversés à diverses organisations à but non lucratif de Montréal.

Depuis qu’il a pris la présidence, M. Santangelo et son conseil d’administration ont mis en œuvre de nouveaux changements : « Après la COVID, les membres se sont plaints du manque de communication de l’association. Notre solution a donc consisté à publier une lettre d’information trimestrielle, qui comprend des mises à jour sur nos activités et des informations sur les membres, y compris les décès et les contributions des membres euxmêmes. » « Notre deuxième priorité après la COVID était de redynamiser la participation. Notre plus grand défi

est d’harmoniser l’ancienne vision du monde en matière d’activités et de dépenses avec la nouvelle vision du monde. Il faut savoir faire la part des choses pour harmoniser les deux. Je pense que nous y sommes parvenus. Et je suis heureux de dire que sur le plan des adhésions, nous avons eu un résultat net positif ces dernières années. Nous visons sans aucun doute les jeunes membres.

Et permettez-moi de préciser que par jeunes, j’entends les personnes âgées de 40 à 60 ans. La majorité des nouveaux membres se situent dans cette tranche d’âge », poursuit-il.

L’astuce consiste à trouver de nouvelles personnes qui souhaitent devenir des membres actifs et qui disposent du temps nécessaire pour le faire.

Santangelo est un véritable diplomate et insiste sur le fait que c’est le travail d’équipe qui permet à l’association de fonctionner.

Il cite Rosina Vincelli, qui a été la première femme à devenir membre de l’association et qui reste à ce jour un membre actif du conseil d’administration. Il fait un clin d’œil aux anciens présidents Pasquale Scardera et Pietro Molino, qui ont tous deux beaucoup fait pour l’association et sont aujourd’hui décédés. Il qualifie l’ancien président Pardo Bino de « rock star ». Il félicite Romano Bino, qui durant sa présidence a supervisé la démutualisation de l’association. Pasquale Marcogliese est le trésorier qui supervise les recettes et qui est méticuleux à ce sujet. Santangelo pourrait continuer ainsi longtemps.

Les célébrations du centenaire comprendront un banquet le 16 novembre au Buffet Roma, une représentation du groupe de théâtre italien Gruppo Teatrale SineDie les 4 et 5 mai au Centre Leonardo da Vinci, ainsi qu’un projet de livre. « Et si nous en avons la possibilité, et si le financement arrive, nous planifions faire une peinture murale pour commémorer nos 100 ans. Ce n’est pas gagné, mais nous verrons ! »

Josie Verrillo Un quart de siècle au service de la communauté Par Carole Gagliardi

irectrice générale du Congrès national des Italo-Canadiens du Québec et de l’ItalfestMTL depuis mai 2000, Josie Verrillo quitte l’organisation communautaire pour se consacrer à des projets personnels. Elle n’est pas triste de fermer ce chapitre important de sa vie professionnelle, car elle laisse derrière elle une organisation bien rodée, qui n’a cessé de se transformer et d’évoluer au fil des années.

Organisatrice née, Josie Verrillo raconte que, toute petite, elle a créé dans sa rue un festival du type Zecchino d’Oro, un spectacle musical pour enfants. Plus tard, elle étudie en administration et travaille pendant 13 ans à la Banque Mercantile du Canada (Banque Nationale) comme gestionnaire d’import-export international, mais, dit-elle : « Ce que j’aimais par-dessus tout, c’était l’organisation des activités sociales. » Jeune maman, elle devient bénévole, et le sera plus d’une dizaine d’années, auprès du Club de patinage artistique de SaintLéonard. Elle accompagnait ses filles aux compétitions internationales, organisait des levées de fonds et des spectacles du genre Ice Capades et Disney on Ice. Débrouillarde, motivée et surtout désireuse de se tenir loin de l’oisiveté, Josie a plongé dans plus d’un projet, allant jusqu’à devenir vice-présidente de la Fédération de patinage artistique du Québec, une tâche non rémunérée qui, avec d’autres implications communautaires, l’occupera à temps plein.

Puis, de fil en aiguille, Verrillo se voit offrir en 2000 la direction et l’organisation de la Settimana

Italiana, trois mois à peine avant la tenue de l’événement. Elle accepte le défi et avoue qu’elle n’avait aucune idée du rôle ou de la mission du Congrès national des Italo-Canadiens et de la Semaine italienne ! Unique employée à temps plein aidée d’une seule étudiante en été, elle réussit à dégager un profit de 10 000 $ avec un budget de 100 000 $ – du jamais vu pour cet événement populaire, qui à l’époque attirait environ 30 000 visiteurs dans le Vieux-Port de Montréal, au square Dorchester et au parc Delorme, à SaintLéonard.

Le festival a évolué au cours des années. Si, à ses débuts, il s’adressait davantage aux touristes de passage dans le Vieux-Montréal, depuis 2004 il compte principalement sur les Italo-Québécois et les italophiles qui se rendent dans la Petite Italie, à Montréal-Nord, à Saint-Léonard, à Notre-Damede-Grâce et à LaSalle. Au dernier sondage, mené en 2019, ItalfestMTL recensait 468 000 visiteurs et comptait sur un budget de 1 million de dollars. En 2021, la Settimana Italiana change définitivement de nom et d’image et devient l’ItalfestMTL. Comment décrire le succès d’ItalfestMTL et l’engouement qu’il suscite ? « Nous sommes une plateforme pour les nouveaux talents et la diversité culturelle sous toutes ses formes, et nous évoluons au même rythme

que notre communauté. » Verrillo laisse à sa successeure, Francesca Sacerdoti, une organisation en santé, qu’elle continuera de superviser quelque temps. Sa plus grande fierté ? « D’avoir réussi, à force d’insistance, à obtenir un espace sur la place des Festivals, ce qui indique que nous avons été reconnues comme une organisation et une communauté incontournables pour tous les Montréalais.

Nous comptons parmi nous tellement de personnes talentueuses et d’artistes émergents qui méritent d’être connus ! » Verrillo raconte que les plus grandes difficultés sont les mêmes, d’année en année : « Trouver du financement pour des activités culturelles est une tâche colossale, surtout au sein de notre communauté, car beaucoup d’entreprises ne reconnaissent pas encore la valeur ajoutée d’une activité culturelle comme la nôtre. De plus, il faut recommencer à zéro chaque année. » Le recrutement de bénévoles – il en faut près d’une soixantaine – et les aléas de la météo sont aussi des casse-têtes récurrents.

Pour la première fois en 24 ans, Verrillo sera en mesure de planifier des vacances estivales.

Elle a l’intention de passer plus de temps en famille et, pourquoi pas, de s’impliquer comme bénévole dans un regroupement qui aurait besoin de son savoirfaire.
