Apprenticeships: A Career ChoiceNot Just an Alternative to University

National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is here, and there’s no better time to celebrate the incredible impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses, and industries like woodworking and joinery. Too often viewed as a second choice to university, apprenticeships offer a unique and powerful path to success—one that blends hands-on experience, personal development, and financial stability.

Why Choose Apprenticeships Over University?

For many, the allure of apprenticeships lies in the “earn while you learn” model. Unlike university students who often graduate with significant debt, apprentices benefit from financial independence and gain valuable, real-world experience from day one.

According to the Association of Apprentices’ Big Apprentice Survey 2024, 74% of apprentices ranked gaining work experience while earning a qualification as the most valuable aspect of their training. This dual benefit equips them with practical skills and a strong career foundation, setting them apart in competitive job markets.

For the woodworking and joinery industry, apprenticeships are particularly crucial. These programmes provide opportunities to master technical craftsmanship while working on real projects—experience that university courses simply can’t replicate.

Spotlight on Current Apprentices: Lilli-Mae Broadhurst

One apprentice who has embraced the opportunities offered by the woodworking and joinery sector is Lilli-Mae Broadhurst, currently undertaking a Sales Administration Apprenticeship at Gowercroft Joinery. In 2024, she was named Apprentice of the Year at the BWF Awards, a testament to her dedication and achievements.

Reflecting on her experience, Lilli-Mae said: “There were many factors that led me to choose an apprenticeship in the woodworking and joinery sector. The main one being the huge amount of opportunity to progress in different ways within the sector and the wide range of routes available. I was also drawn to this particular pathway because of the sustainability aspects.

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have massively developed my communication and problem-solving skills, which will play a huge part in progressing within my career. I would advise anyone to start an apprenticeship in the woodworking field, as the industry is filled with incredibly supportive individuals and allows young people to be creative in their learning while benefiting the environment through their work.

My time at Gowercroft has completely transformed how I view the woodworking industry. I once imagined it as something similar to my granddad’s workshop, but being behind the scenes, I’ve discovered the innovation, advanced high-tech machinery, and forward-thinking approach that truly defines this sector.

The thing I love most about working in the joinery sector is the people I work alongside every day and the opportunities it provides to build new relationships.”

A Career Choice for Everyone

Apprenticeships are not just an alternative to university— they’re a choice for everyone, from school leavers seeking hands-on training to those looking to upskill or transition into a new career. For businesses, they’re a chance to shape the future workforce and bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm into their teams.

Titus’ product range is designed to cater to the evolving needs of the industry. Take, for example, the innovative T-type PressTo hinges. These hinges feature a tool-less cup fixing system that enables quick and easy mounting, along with a unique anyway clip that ensures consistent and reliable soft-close action. The T-type-i 170 hinges go a step further, allowing cabinet doors to open to a full 170 degrees, providing unobstructed access to cabinet interiors while maintaining exceptional stability throughout their operating range.

CASE STUDY

James Latham Covering the full spectrum

James Latham, one of the UK’s leading independent timber, panel and decorative surface distributors recently provided Valchromat for the refurbishment of the Science Museum’s Wonderlab, its interactive gallery for children.

This pioneering MDF was selected as the primary material for a rainbow-themed installation in the gallery’s ‘Colour Room,’ where its ability to successfully blend aesthetics, durability, and versatility, whilst doing so safely and sustainably, made it a go-to choice.

A popular material for leisure, attraction, and retail fit-outs, this project showcases Valchromat’s performance and visual appeal; especially how it gives specifiers and fabricators creative freedom to realise even the most ambitious briefs. Taking a closer look at the project…

True colours

The Science Museum is one of the UK’s best-loved cultural destinations for adults and children alike, with a focus on inspiring futures and making science accessible for everyone.

This overarching goal comes to life in Wonderlab, an interactive hands-on experience developed to ignite scientific curiosity and fuel the imagination. Originally opened in 2016, by 2023 its popular Colour Room, an immersive space designed to communicate the science of colour, was due a refurbishment.

A core object of the refresh involved replacing worn fittings with new ones and reinvigorating the space with a vibrant landscape mural, incorporating a prominent rainbow feature that would help show how the colours of the rainbow appear under monochromatic light.

Golden opportunity

The type of material chosen for the rainbow feature was important. Not only did it need to be structurally robust, able to withstand the rigours of a high-footfall environment and deliver the visual impact stipulated within the design brief, it also had to meet a set of regulatory requirements unique to public attractions.

The feature would be subject to constant physical interaction from visitors of all ages, so every aspect of the fit-out has to meet strict safety and sustainability standards, including non-toxicity. Furthermore, it had to be easy to clean to ensure the highest levels of hygiene.

It was a delicate balance for the museum’s Spatial & Exhibitions Designer, Laurence Deane, to strike, working with fabricator Hadley Interiors and its long-time distribution partner James Latham.

Out of the blue

Once the brief had been shared with James Latham’s expert specification team, one material immediately leapt out as a clear front-runner: Valchromat.

A pioneering, lightweight MDF panel, available in a wide spectrum of colours, its balance of form and function immediately impressed Laurence who chose seven different shades to faithfully represent a rainbow. His team was also particularly impressed by the consistency of colour running through the entire body of each panel as well as its ultrasmooth finish.

Pushing the visual dial even further, to ensure each colour popped, James Latham recommended treating each Valchromat sheet used with pigmented oils from specialist manufacturer Koate. This treatment not only added extra tonal depth and higher contrast, it also protected the feature making it easier to maintain.

Simple to work, Valchromat is also a fabricator firm favourite, as it can be cut to almost any shape, from an expansive arch to a tiny tile. Even better, as demonstrated in the rainbow display, Valchromat can be bonded, planed, or sculpted to create 3-D decorative features.

With flying colours

The results speak for themselves, with visitors seeing this vision in Valchromat as soon as they enter the room. In Laurence’s words, “The Koate-treated Valchromat leaps out as soon as you enter the room, providing an important visual anchor. The vivid, matt tones also perfectly achieve the objective of the piece: demonstrating how colours appear under monochrome light. A huge thanks to James Latham for their consultancy on the project, we look forward to working with them in the future.”

James Latham is one of Valchromat’s most trusted distributors, possessing the largest range of the product in the UK. There are over 10 colours to choose from and it’s available in the following board sizes: 2500mm x 1850mm/1250mm, in 8mm, 12mm, 25mm, or 30mm thicknesses.

SFD Group Invest in Latest Comec CNC Door Frame Machinery from JJ Smith

Stoke-on-Trent based SFD Group is a family-run company that has rapidly established itself as a leading manufacturer of fire doors and fire door sets. Specialising in timber and composite designs, the company serves a wide array of clients nationwide, spanning both industrial and public sectors.

Founded in 2016 by Lynne, Mark and Ethan Daniels and Adam Clarke, SFD Group has grown remarkably, already employing an extra 15 members or staff with plans to take on another 30 over the next two years. Their growth reflects not only their commitment to quality and innovation but also their ability to adapt to the demands of an expanding client base. This progress recently necessitated a move to a new, custom-designed 31,000-square-foot facility – a space personally envisioned by Mark to support their evolving operations.

The new facility is a testament to SFD Group’s investment in state-of-the-art technology, including a new spray line, sanding machine, and edge bander. However, the crown jewel of their investments is the Comec MD TOP XL, a fully CNC-controlled line designed specifically for the machining of door frames. Supplied by JJ Smith, the Comec MD TOP XL includes a hopper feed loading and return system that minimises manual handling and boosts productivity. The machine’s capabilities are impressive. Equipped with three vertical and one horizontal electro-spindles, a saw blade unit, and a five-exit drilling head, it handles everything from sizing and hinge recessing to spot hole and handle hole drilling. Additionally, its automated worktable and clamp positioning allow for quick setup, ensuring maximum efficiency during production.

Reflecting on the machine’s impact, Mark states –“It has proved a real game changer for us. We are now able to machine a complete frame in just four minutes. Previously, it would have taken us 14 minutes to do the same.”

“JJ Smith took the time to listen and understand my production requirements. This level of customisation stands in stark contrast to other machinery manufacturers who try to sell you what they want, rather than what you need.”

As SFD Group continues to expand, it exemplifies how a family business with a focus on quality and customer-centric solutions can thrive in a competitive industry. The future certainly looks bright for this Stoke-on-Trent success story.

Beyond door frames, Comec’s range of CNC work centres have been designed to machine components used in the UK manufacture of plantation shutters, children’s play equipment, garden products, and kitchen face frames.

Outdoor Play UK Expands With HOMAG’s CENTATEQ P-310

Outdoor Play UK, a specialist in the design and manufacture of bespoke wooden playground equipment, is responsible for some of the most engaging, safe and beautiful play spaces found across the UK. Their work is all about enhancing a child’s experience through the use of natural materials and the outside environment, which is proven to have a positive effect on both mental and physical development.

As Outdoor Play UK has demonstrated, creativity is key in this industry. But bringing a bespoke design to life requires more than just a great concept – it demands the right machinery to turn drawings into reality. Recognising this, the company recently invested in HOMAG’s CENTATEQ P-310 5-axis, a CNC machine set to take outdoor play to new and exciting heights.

The need for advanced technology

Outdoor Play UK initially worked with a 3-axis CNC machine, using it to develop a range of products. However, as demand grew and designs became more complex, the company realised the need for a more advanced solution. “We were looking for the next step forward,” explained Charlie,

Workshop Manager at Outdoor Play UK. “A more capable machine would allow us to develop our products even further. That’s when we decided to go for a 5-axis CNC.”

Choosing HOMAG

The decision to go with HOMAG was influenced by industry recommendations and thorough research. “A neighbouring business that specialises in kitchens spoke very highly of HOMAG,” Charlie said. “We were considering another brand as well, and it was a close call. But ultimately, HOMAG came back with a strong offer, and it was actually the machine our manager originally wanted.”

To ensure they were making the right investment, the team visited HOMAG’s Castle Donington showroom, where they saw the CENTATEQ P-310 in action. “The build quality really stood out,” Charlie noted. “One of our biggest requirements was the ability to clamp and machine round poles in-house – something we hadn’t been able to do before. HOMAG took the time to test this for us, sending videos and photos of the process, which gave us confidence in the machine’s capabilities.”

Seamless installation and training

The implementation of the CENTATEQ P-310 was carefully planned to minimise disruption. “Installation was excellent,” Charlie recalled. “There were some logistical challenges with the layout of our site, but HOMAG liaised with us really well and came up with a great solution.

“The installation took four days, and during that time disruption was kept to a minimum. Then we had five days of on-site training… HOMAG does a great job of ensuring you’re comfortable with the machine. The transition as a result was very smooth.”

Outdoor Play UK also invested in HOMAG’s woodWOP software, along with an additional CAM plugin for 3D modelling. While the transition to the new software presented some learning curves, HOMAG provided extensive support. “We had some initial difficulties with transferring our bespoke drawings to woodWOP, but HOMAG went above and beyond, adapting our designs to ensure compatibility,” Charlie said. “Their willingness to help has been outstanding.”

The impact of the CENTATEQ P-310

Although still in the early stages of using the new machine, Outdoor Play UK is already seeing improvements in efficiency and accuracy. “We’re getting to grips with the 5-axis technology, and further training is planned for March,” Charlie shared. “But even using the base capabilities of the CNC, we’ve already noticed a big difference. Tasks that were previously done manually, such as gluing timber for larger workpieces, are now handled much faster and with greater precision.”

Looking ahead, the company anticipates significant benefits in terms of increased production capacity and improved product quality. “We’re excited to see where this machine will take us when we’re using it at its full potential.”

Safe hands

The Holz-Her Evolution 7402: Revolutionising production at RAI Developments

In the world of panel processing, joinery, and woodworking, precision, efficiency, and flexibility are key to meeting tight deadlines and delivering high-quality results. Panel & Joinery Production spoke with Richard Ilendo, Managing Director of Rai Developments, to explore how the Holz-Her Evolution 7402 is transforming production capabilities.

Designed to maximise efficiency in workshops of all sizes, the Evolution 7402 features full four-sided panel formatting, back wall grooving, and precision drilling for connectors, all within a compact footprint of less than five square metres. This allows manufacturers to optimise space without compromising on performance.

The machine’s versatile operation modes support both oneperson workflow efficiency and continuous production for high-volume output. Whether producing cabinetry, interior joinery, furniture components, or bespoke architectural features, the Evolution 7402 offers seamless adaptability to diverse manufacturing needs.

Holz-Her’s stable roller conveyors and preset in-feed tables ensure smooth handling of workpieces ranging from large panels up to 2,500mm (without additional supports) x 920mm to delicate components (as small as 200mm x 70mm

x 8mm). The Ecovacs system enhances material protection while optimising energy efficiency, and the adjustable vacuum system securely holds panels of varying thicknesses, including solid surfaces and composites, for pinpoint accuracy.

Richard said “For our clients, timely delivery is just as critical as precision, and extending the timeline by a year simply isn’t an option. Purchasing the Evolution 7402 has enabled Rai Developments to keep everything in-house, we have full control over production schedules, ensuring efficiency and quality without compromise.”

Beyond standard panel cutting and drilling, the Evolution 7402 enables Rai Developments to manufacture intricate joinery elements, from doors with concealed hinges to complex timber grilles, custom furniture, and architectural panels. Its advanced drill head supports both horizontal and vertical drilling, also, grooving, while an optional XL drill head further expands machining capabilities. The robust 10.3 KW HSK electro-spindle is served by a 4 position automatic tool changer.

“The machine is incredibly flexible,” Richard notes. “Once you start experimenting, you find new ways to use it that go beyond the standard instruction manual, opening up new production possibilities.”

Holz-Her integrates cutting-edge CNC software solutions to simplify programming and reduce errors. The CAMPUS software package offers pre-tested macros for effortless operation, while the ‘easy snaps’ function ensures accurate programming reference points, minimising material waste. Additionally, a laser plausibility check verifies workpiece dimensions, reducing operator errors and increasing overall efficiency.

Richard added “Training and learning were key to fully unlocking the machine’s potential. The team quickly realised that mastering macros significantly boosted efficiency” continued Richard “Once we developed macros for creating drawers, a task that used to take hours was reduced to just ten minutes. The ability to create macros and automate repetitive processes has been a massive timesaver.

The Evolution 7402 also features an open interface, allowing seamless CAD/CAM data transfer for streamlined production, whether manufacturing custom kitchens, largescale interior fit-outs, or bespoke furniture.

Unlike traditional vertical CNC machines that rely on grippers, the Holz-Her vacuum cup system eliminates exclusion zones and allows for one-step sizing with maximum precision. As a result, formatting on all four sides of a component is a standard feature.

“Holz-Her’s vacuum-based clamping system is unmatched. Richard explains. “Other machines use grippers, which come with severe limitations. With Holz-Her, you can securely hold materials in place without compromising precision. I researched extensively, and no other manufacturer does it like this.”.

This flexibility allowed Rai Developments to take on unique, large-scale projects, including the production of 130 individually shaped timber fins for a ceiling installation, creating a wave effect. The Evolution uses an automatic re-clamping process, a standard feature, the X machining dimension is infinite.

“We machined 130 unique, six-metre-long timber fins, each shaped differently to create the wave effect. This project alone covered nearly half of the machine’s cost.” Explained Richard.

Bringing the Holz-Her Evolution 7402 in-house has transformed Rai Developments’ production capabilities, giving them the flexibility and control to take on intricate, high-value commissions with confidence.

Richard concluded “We’re very happy with the Evolution 7402, it has increased our efficiency, expanded our project scope, and given us a competitive edge in the woodworking industry.”

For businesses in panel processing, joinery, and woodworking, investing in technology like the Holz-Her Evolution 7402 means unlocking new levels of productivity, precision, and creative potential, ensuring that they can stay ahead in an ever-evolving industry.

Mirka - How to go about being dust-free

Laboratory tests have shown that without dust extraction, dust in the air per kilogram of sanded material is over 200 grams per kilogram, and dust on surrounding surfaces is almost 800 grams per kilogram. These may not seem like large quantities but when they accumulate over a long period, they could potentially turn into both a fire and health hazard for the business.

To combat the dust particles is where dust-extraction comes into play because it helps safeguard employees’ health & safety, especially with the variety of materials that are being used in the production process. In addition by having a dust-free work environment, it ensures control of the sanding process and allows for multiple work phases to be undertaken in the same room, delivering efficiency both for the business and in terms of tool usage. The lack of dust also reduces the risk of ‘dust pills’ and clogging as the dust can no longer collect in lumps on the sanding discs to the same extent and there is no longer a danger that sanded dust will build up and create grooves on the sanding surface and fill up the disc reducing its sanding capacity. This means that an abrasive such as Abranet® maintains its aggressive properties over the entire surface much longer than traditional paper materials that have long wilted and faded, making sanding more even and efficient.

Here are some tips from Neil Newbrook, business sector manager wood, Mirka UK, that will help you achieve a dust-free work environment:

• Using a pad saver will protect the backing pad from wear. If P80 to P120 discs are used with a pad saver, we recommend the insertion of the grub screw.

• Ensure that the product is regularly serviced for optimum performance.

• Make sure the fleece bag in the mobile extraction unit is not full and does not have any rips or holes. If it does, replace it.

• Periodically remove and clean the motor filter. This can be done by placing it in a bag and gently knocking the dust out of the filter. Or better still, use another vacuum or extractor to clean the filter. Once it is clean, replace the filter in the machine.

• Make sure the seal between the tank and upper section of the extractor is clean and not damaged.

• Use the clean filter system on the machine every day. This will prolong the life of the system as well as create a dust-free working environment.

• Store the machine in a dry place protected from frost.

• Ensure that all tools are performing to an optimal level.

• Ensure that the product is regularly serviced for optimum performance.

Unlock every inch of your space with Combilift

Space constraints in timber workshops and woodworking warehouses significantly hinder productivity and operational efficiency. Handling large timber panels and bulky equipment requires careful organisation to make the most of limited floor space. Common challenges include overcrowding, restricted access to materials, and inefficient workflows, all leading to delays and increased operational costs.

One of the main challenges is managing the movement of various heavy components in tight spaces. Traditional forklifts can be cumbersome and may require wide aisles for manoeuvring, which is impractical -and potentially hazardous- on a crowded shop floor. Multidirectional forklift models from Irish manufacturer Combilift, such as the C-Series and CB range, are designed to travel sideways while handling long and bulky loads. This sideways functionality eliminates the need for overhead carrying when navigating tight spaces and narrow aisles, significantly reducing the risk of injury. This, in turn, allows for a more effective and cost-efficient use of available space, minimising the footprint of stored goods and reducing congestion caused by excess inventory blocking pathways and operating areas.

Combilift’s pedestrian stacker range is also the ideal choice for busy workshops, whether you need to safely handle palletised goods or long loads of timber. Equipped with patented and award-winning multi-position tiller arm, these models guarantee maximum safety for the operator and others in the vicinity. The tiller arm can be turned left or right, allowing the rear wheel to pivot parallel to the chassis and back again at the touch of a button. This feature enables the operator to remain in the safest position while working in narrow aisles—at the side of the truck rather than at the rear, as it is with other pedestrian stackers. This reduces the risk of the operator becoming trapped between the truck and the racking and ensures full visibility of the load and surrounding area. Additionally, the multi-position tiller arm allows the pedestrian range to navigate very narrow aisles of just 2.1m, maximising your space and addressing the space constraints that facilities encounter.

Other space limitations arise in times of growth or expansion when companies have maximised the available space in their facilities and are considering extending their current premises or relocating – both of which are costly, disruptive and involve a great deal of bureaucracy. “Improving and not moving” is also a much more sustainable course of action and accords with many companies’ wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

Combilift has a team of very experienced design engineers who can provide companies with a freeof-charge warehouse design and layout service. This service demonstrates how warehouse space can be configured according to the capabilities of Combilift’s products, which in some cases can double available space. By narrowing aisles and making use of vertical airspace, companies can increase up to 50% of their storage capacity and avoid the excessively expensive costs of building a new facility.

CEO and Co-founder Martin McVicar: “We have always seen Combilift as much more than a designer and manufacturer of forklifts and other handling solutions. Space is one of the most valuable assets our customers possess, and if our trucks can make it work better for them in terms of storage density then everyone benefits. The ongoing demand for warehouse space coupled with ever-rising business costs means that space optimisation is now more important than ever. Additional benefits of course also include avoiding the operational headache for management and the workforce of relocating to new premises, the lack of bureaucracy associated with new builds or extensions, and the expense of leasing extra offsite storage.”

Combilift’s innovative solutions effectively address space constraints, maximising storage capacity while enhancing overall productivity and safety in panel and joinery facilities. These solutions improve storage management and organization, making it easier to access materials and speeding up production times. By reducing congestion, they create a smoother workflow, minimizing obstacles and improving safety.

Contact Combilift to see how its wide range of innovative material handling solutions can help your company make the most of your existing space and enhance the efficiency and safety of your operations.

JF Joinery Doubles Revenue and Optimises Production Thanks To The Joinery Network

“Since we adopted the Lignum tooling system for timber windows and doors, we have more than doubled our revenue since 2019 including lower costs, less downtime and higher profit margin!”

– John Fanthorpe (JF Joinery)

JF Joinery is a five star rated manufacturer based out of Exmoor and has been producing timber doors, windows and joinery products since 1976. JF joinery is an affiliate of The Joinery Network and since then, has grown the business dramatically thanks to the Leitz Lignum tooling system for timber doors and windows and support from The Joinery Network. Today, JF Joinery operates in two markets: joinery and flooring.

Leitz Tooling is a founding member of The Joinery Network and provides tooling and technical support to members and affiliates. The Joinery Network was established in 2018 to help UK manufacturers of timber doors and windows get into the market by reducing startup costs by at least 65%. The network also lowers barriers to entry, as manufacturers using the tooling system inherit both required and coveted certifications, such as energy efficiency ratings, suitability for new and restoration builds or the police secure by design accreditation. Quite simply, The Joinery Network brings together leading organisations and specialists from the market with the know-how, advice, products and services to help you move your business forward.

Moreover, the Leitz Lignum tooling has empowered JF joinery to expand its market reach and secure new sales opportunities. Manufacturers using Lignum tooling inherit compliance with industry standards, such as PAS:24, Secure by Design and building regulations Q, L, & M. Eliminating the need for costly and timeconsuming product certifications, granting JF joinery a competitive edge and opening doors to new customer segments. Not to mention, the massive saving in money and time that would have been required to pass over 7 forms of testing including weather tightness and energy efficiency.

“Back when we started in joinery, certifications were not really a thing and our traditional designs would not have passed testing. Now, they change so much it’s hard to keep up to date. Without The Joinery Network, there is no way we would have been able to keep up with changing regulations like PAS:24. As a joiner you cannot afford to not cater to all areas of joinery (New build and conservation), as the Lignum products inherit compliance, the value is immeasurable and it has been vitally important to our success – the Lignum design is streets ahead and we now exclusively manufacture Lignum products.”

Furthermore, Lignum tooling has significantly reduced JF Joinery’s start-up costs. The comprehensive tooling system, with its meticulously designed tool sets, has eliminated the need for extensive product testing and validation to meet building standards. The network has already borne the brunt of the arduous and expensive testing process, streamlining the development process, allowing JF joinery to bring new product designs to market faster and more efficiently.

“Since Brexit and Covid, it’s no secret that margins are getting cut by high material costs and joiners are facing massive increases in running costs, something JF Joinery never really considered until Covid19. It has been much more affordable doing it this way. Initially I thought, hell this is a lot of money, then you do a cost analysis and compare the initial investment to faster production times, reduced downtime, accurate tools, no testing costs and less re work and the cost becomes negligible.”

Leitz & The Joinery Network are constantly testing new designs, tools and materials so that manufacturers of timber doors and windows can stay up to date with the latest designs and trends. As recently as the 2nd of November 2023, The Joinery Network became the first UK company to offer Accoya timber products to PAS24:2022 standards.

In essence, Lignum tooling from Leitz has proven to be a game-changer for JF Joinery, enabling the company to achieve remarkable advancements in production efficiency, product quality, and overall business operations. The combination of increased production volumes, expanded sales opportunities, and reduced startup costs has propelled JF joinery to new heights of success, solidifying its position within the local market.

No margin for error: Why Humphrey & Stretton chose HOMAG ’s EDGETEQ S-500

For over 60 years, Humphrey & Stretton PLC has been a trusted name in the manufacturing of doors, frames, doorsets, timber screens, and associated joinery products. Operating out of an 18,000 sq. ft. facility in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, this family-run business has supplied doors and frames for a range of buildings, from The Shard in London to Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The company holds itself to the very highest of standards, aware that when it comes to the manufacturing of fire doors, there can be zero compromise on quality. Hence, Humphrey & Stretton recently invested in the HOMAG EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander.

Outdated machinery and evolving industry needs

As an established leader in the fire doors industry, Humphrey & Stretton recognises the importance of staying ahead in a competitive and ever-evolving market. “We’ve been making investments into new machinery so we can stay up to date with the latest advancements,” explains Scott Humphrey, Director at Humphrey & Stretton. “We have a strong market position and we’re known throughout the fire doors industry – but it’s important that we never grow complacent.”

Their existing edge bander, from a different manufacturer, had gone beyond its useful life and frequently broke down. “Even during its useful life, our previous edge bander wasn’t quite geared up to work with our thicker, heavier materials,” Scott said. “It was more suited to smaller panels, which limited our capacity and slowed production.”

To maintain their high standards, the company sought a new edge bander that could handle their specific requirements while increasing efficiency and reliability.

Why the EDGETEQ S-500?

Humphrey & Stretton’s decision to invest in the HOMAG EDGETEQ S-500 was driven by a combination of machine quality, proven performance, and the company’s previous positive experiences with HOMAG equipment.

“We already had HOMAG machinery so we were well aware of their capabilities and service,” Scott said. “We looked at other manufacturers but the HOMAG edge bander stood out. The quality of the machine and the product it produces is unmatched.”

CASE STUDY

Additionally, the partnership and proactive support from HOMAG’s team, particularly their Account Manager, played a crucial role.

“With an investment like this, you’re not just thinking about the machine itself,” Scott explained. “It’s about the decade that comes after – the service, the aftercare, and the maintenance. HOMAG’s proactivity and expertise made them the obvious choice.”

Demonstration and confidence

To ensure the EDGETEQ S-500 could meet their specific needs, Humphrey & Stretton’s team travelled to HOMAG’s manufacturing facility in Germany. During the demonstration, they tested the edge bander with like-for-like materials, simulating real-world conditions.

“Our materials are thicker than most, so we needed to see how the machine would handle them,” Scott said. “It performed exceptionally well, and when an issue arose during the demo, the HOMAG team resolved it quickly. That gave us a lot of reassurance that if something goes wrong in a live environment – which it naturally will, no matter how good the machine is – it can be fixed promptly.”

A seamless transition

The installation of the EDGETEQ S-500 was meticulously planned and executed to minimise disruption. “Bringing a machine of this size into a factory always causes some level of disruption, but HOMAG kept it to an absolute minimum,” Scott shared.

“They conducted the training immediately afterward, on-site, which was great because we could apply it to live jobs, ensuring that everything they showed us was directly relevant to our work. This approach further minimised disruption to our operations and left our team confident in handling all relevant scenarios.”

Increased capacity, quality, and efficiency

The EDGETEQ S-500 has delivered measurable benefits for Humphrey & Stretton. The company has seen significant improvements in production capacity, product quality, and operational efficiency.

“The increased capacity means reduced overhead rates, which helps us manage costs better,” Scott explained. “Before, breakdowns slowed everything down, and we often had to add extra processes to compensate. Now, the EDGETEQ S-500 handles everything with precision and reliability.”

This precision is particularly crucial for an industry where every product must meet stringent safety standards. “Being a fire doors manufacturer, we need to make sure everything is spot on, there is no margin for error. We can’t risk our doors being anything but perfect. The EDGETEQ S-500 is as precise as can be – which our customers can attest to.”

Added value

For Humphrey & Stretton, the partnership with HOMAG extends beyond the machinery. It’s about trust, reliability, and a commitment to long-term success.

Makita Continues To Impress With The Launch Of New 40vmax Belt Sander

Makita has expanded its range of high-powered 40VMax XGT tools with the addition of the BS001G cordless belt sander. The BS001G easily matches the performance of a corded version while providing greater convenience and boasting new features not seen on similar machines.

The BS001G has been designed for efficient sanding with a 76 x 533 mm sanding belt to make sanding large surfaces quicker and easier. The toolless belt changing means it is simple to switch between sanding grades when moving from course to fine sanding tasks. The BS001G is comfortable to use horizontally or vertically depending on the task and has been engineered for an optimal weight balance to deliver even sanding. The sander has a variable speed control conveniently located beside the rear handle, allowing the user to select the required belt speed from 120 to 470 metres per minute (2.0 to 7.8 metres per second). There is also a lock on button for more comfortable use when sanding large areas.

The BS001G includes the option for use as a stationary bench sander due to the completely flat top of the housing. Using specially designed clamps available separately, the sander can be securely fitted upside down to a solid surface to act as a bench-top sander for smaller workpieces. It is also easy to manage dust thanks to Makita’s innovative Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS) technology built into to the tool. This connects the sander to compatible dust extractors via Bluetooth to run the dust extractor automatically when the tool is in use, therefore streamlining the process. The new sander also has the option to use the large on-tool dust bag, which includes an anti-drop feature. When used vertically, the newly designed lock mechanism prevents the dust bag dropping off under its own weight. For ease of use, the BS001G has an adjustable front handle, with four positions from 30 degrees backward to 60 degrees forward. This allows the sander to be held in the most comfortable and effective position for the task at hand. Moving the handle to the vertical or back position allows sanding up to walls or other vertical surfaces. The design of the BS001G also allows sanding flush to edges on the right side of the tool. Additionally, the sander has an LED work light, the angle of which can be adjusted to better illuminate the surface of the material.

Finally, for significantly extended run-times, the BS001G is compatible with the Makita PDC1200 or PDC1500 portable power packs. These backpack-mounted power sources feature 33Ah and 43Ah batteries respectively and can be used with a wide range of Makita’s twin 18V (36V) LXT and 40VMax XGT tools.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK commented: “The BS001G is the ideal alternative to corded belt sanders as it matches or even surpasses the performance of similar mainspowered sanders. By removing the need for cables and improving dust management through the use of our AWS technology, the BS001G also makes work easier and safer.”

Makita Nails It Again With Its Latest Launch

Makita has added a new 18V LXT Framing Nailer to its range of high-performance cordless tools. The new DBN900 offers significant advantages over pneumatic and gas nailers including improved ease of use and greater working flexibility.

The DBN900 18V LXT Framing Nailer, designed specifically for first fix framing applications, can be used in the same way as a pneumatic nailer but without the additional setup time, complication and restriction of a compressor and air lines. In addition, unlike gas nailers, the DBN900 has no additional consumables, reducing the cost and inconvenience of replacing the cartridges.

The latest addition to Makita’s range of cordless nailers, the DBN900 is compatible with clipped head nails between 50 mm and 90 mm and nail gauges between 2.9 mm and 3.3 mm. Its magazine will accommodate up to 58 collated nails and incorporates a quick and easy reloading mechanism. The inspection window makes it simple to check the number of nails remaining. It also features a variable drive depth, with the required adjustment made using the easy-to-use dial on the nose of the tool.

Furthermore, the DBN900 features two operation modes. In sequential actuation mode, it drives a nail each time the trigger is pressed, while the contact actuation mode allows continuous nailing, with a nail driven every time the tip is pressed to the material for as long as the trigger is held. Using a Makita 6.0Ah LXT battery (BL1860B), it can drive up to 1000 nails on a full battery charge at a rate of up to two nails per second.

The DBN900 has been designed for both convenience and enhanced safety. The anti-slip nose of the tool makes working on angled materials easier and more accurate, while the LED job light with pre-glow and after-glow function improves visibility of the work surface. It features both a rafter hook and belt hook, allowing it to be hung on ladders, scaffolding and timbers or clipped to the user, keeping it close at hand. The DBN900 also includes both an anti-dry-firing mechanism, which activates before the last nails in the magazine are driven to prevent missed nails, and an anti-restart function to prevent accidental activation.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK said: “Our new, long awaited DBN900 18V LXT framing nailer is an excellent alternative to the conventional pneumatic or gas nailers and has been engineered to streamline framing tasks and similar first fix work. It is easy to use, even in restricted spaces and offers far greater flexibility when compared to traditional pneumatic tools.”

Building possibilities with pioneering low-waste gallery displays

James Latham introduces Valchromat White Pearl to help realise Plaey’s innovative inter-locking modular plinth system Traditionally, putting on art exhibitions can be incredibly wasteful, consuming a large number of resources. This is particularly true of sets and temporary installations, which usually end up in landfills when a show has run its course. It’s a problem that specialist gallery and museum furniture designer Plaey wanted to tackle head-on.

Working alongside longtime timber, panels and décors partner, James Latham, it’s led to the development of a revolutionary modular plinth system, which will finally end the throwaway culture associated with this type of activity.

What makes the solution particularly novel is its unique ‘stackability’, meaning each component can be neatly slotted together and safely stored when not in use, requiring a minimal amount of space.

In the words of Plaey founder Matt Kelly, “I wanted to address the challenges traditionally associated with art exhibition and gallery plinths, particularly the offcuts and waste created during their production and how they are regularly scrapped at end-of-life. It was about looking beyond single-use, to develop a circular solution. My lightbulb moment came when my son and I were playing with a well-known brand of interconnecting-building blocks. I thought about how this could be applied to temporary furniture and installations, to achieve something agile and scalable, whilst easy to assemble and store. The idea quickly developed from there, next I needed to find the perfect material to realise it.”

When the James Latham panels team was briefed on the project, it immediately caught their collective imagination. Dovetailing with the leading distributor’s strong commitment to sustainability, it was keen to be involved in such a forward-thinking venture.

Finding the perfect fit with Valchromat

To fully meet the holistic concept, Plaey decided to use Valchromat, a premium full-colour MDF which combines the visual-neutrality, sustainability, strength, and workability required in this niche application.

Plaey was already familiar with Valchromat’s exceptional qualities, having previously used it on a number of premium pieces of furniture in venues including: Tate St Ives, Cornwall, and the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Its light weight, durability, and attractive appearance made it the stand-out material for this application. Delivering a functional blank canvas, Valchromat acts as an important supporting player, enabling creative freedom while meeting the rigorous demands of exhibition spaces.

The consistency of colour throughout each panel and the ultra-smooth finish enhances the visual impact, resulting in practical and strikingly beautiful plinths. Not only does the system’s modularity offer flexibility, the ability to manufacture these items in any colour enables customisation to fit the style and aesthetic of different exhibitions. While there are plenty of hues to choose from, Valchromat’s newest board, White Pearl, has emerged as the most popular colour choice, aligning with the standard whitewashed aesthetic commonly used in exhibition staging. The novel system also features easy-to-assemble floor plinths and vibrant yellow Valchromat tiles for labelling.

Assembling a new standard

Designed for functionality and community engagement, the project already demonstrates Plaey’s plinths’ potential to become a standard feature in galleries worldwide, creating a sustainable display environment, whether in a historic art gallery or a modern exhibition space.

Recently debuted at Abbott Hall, Kendal, Cumbria, where it took centre-stage at Ecology Gallery, the plinths garnered enthusiastic feedback from visitors and gallery staff alike. Matt, concluded by expressing his excitement about the project’s potential impact: “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The beauty of this modular system lies in its ability to adapt to different spaces and needs. It empowers galleries, event organisers and production teams with greater flexibility, making it easier for them to work more sustainably. I’d particularly like to thank James Latham, who donated the materials to get this project off the ground at prototype stage and for its continued generosity and ongoing support.”

The project has sparked considerable interest from other galleries, leading Matt to explore potential patent options and additional applications, including tabletop designs.

New investment For PCD Tooling Solution

PCD Tooling Solutions have had a busy December and January.

In December they were awarded ISO9001. This is something they’ve have been working toward so as to improve their efficiency and the traceability of all their customers tools that they service and manufacture. They have also been introducing a computerised tracking system so any employee from any terminal can trace customer’s tools to see at what stage of production they are. This allows greater co-operation and communication between staff in a very reliable, transparent way so any issue is resolved instantly. They have also installed a brand new CNC saw grinding machine for the service of TCT saw blades up to 800 mm diameter. They noticed that there is still a large market using TCT as well as PCD so this allows them to cover more ground in terms of service capabilities, as now they can service both TCT and PCD.

Their biggest investment in this time though, and the one they are the proudest of, is their new DIAREX LASER EROSION MACHINE.

With their existing three Vollmer QM disc erosion machines plus QXD disc erosion with body relief and polishing and our QWD wire technology which produce the best available erosion quality, the next obvious step was laser to offer a total repair, refurbish and sharpening service for all diamond machine tools.

Paul Falkingham, company founder, explains: “The initial laser results have been fantastic with its speed, accuracy and quality of finish it is definitely the next level of quality for us to offer our customers. It also has the range of capabilities to offer our tools and services into other markets that require exceptional precision and complex profiles and geometries.”

The Diarex laser is much more efficient and therefore reduces run times and energy costs, and its tool station with robotic loading enables lights out running whenever required. All existing customers profile erosion files that are on their management system can be automatically down loaded to ensure complete repeatability and an improved precision cutting edge quality. This can be verified by the inspection quality of Zoller and the balancing technology of Haimer to ensure every tool is of the highest accuracy and quality.

Ben Falkingham elaborates: “We are confident that PCD Tooling Solutions can now offer customers from different industries the highest quality of service. Whereas previously we were limited by the amount of machines we had, we can now cover tools whether they are saw blades in TCT and PCD, straight router cutters, milling heads, small and large profiles all at once. We can now be called the complete service centre.”

PCD Tooling can offer new diamond tools from an extensive range of routers, edge bander milling cutters and saw blades, ex stock. They have the ability to manufacture special

tooling and PCD saw blades with any tooth form, number of teeth, virtually any geometry to cut any material, on any diameters up to 600mm.

To a small company like PCD Tooling, it is a big leap of faith but they have never been shy when it comes to investment in technology and are constantly looking to improve their service. They believe the door is now open for many new markets. There is a vast variety of materials out there and they all have to be cut at some stage. Having always had the best results available from their range of machines, their commitment to investment into the greatest quality in machinery will continue to fulfil the dream of a quality as close to perfection as possible.

Paul said: “We are confident this is our next step on our journey to growing as a company and providing a valuable service to many new potential customers, as well as continuing to provide excellent service to our existing customers. Our investment into new technologies gives us more versatility and adds another string to our bow”.

CASE STUDY

Ecogate ® Controls Riverside Airflow

At Riverside Wood Products Ltd, in Darwen, Lancashire, Extractly Ltd have carried out a significant upgrade and reconfiguration of the company’s dust extraction system, including the installation of energy-saving ‘extraction on-demand’ technology.

Headed up by Paul Sullivan, RWP is a well-established, family-owned joinery shop offering a wide range of machining services. As well as processing high-volumes of panels and ‘cut & edge’ boards, plus timber components in all shapes and sizes, the company also undertakes everything from carcassing and assembly work, to individual bespoke furniture projects.

For over a decade the company had enjoyed steady and continuous growth in the relative comfort of a 9,000 sq. ft. workshop. In more recent years, however, having invested in several new machines to keep pace with the demands of an ever-expanding order book, it’s fair to say the company’s workshop was bulging at the seams. So, in early 2024, when the adjacent warehouse space unexpectedly became vacant, Paul Sullivan took the decision to literally ‘knock through to next door’ and has more than doubled the available floor space.

The now vastly-improved production facility includes an impressive line-up of Homag machinery; including several CNC machining centres, plus a couple of edge banders, as well as a horizontal beam saw. “When all these high-speed machines are in operation, the need for an equally-efficient dust extraction system is obviously essential”, says Paul Sullivan, “and this reorganisation of the factory presented us with the perfect opportunity to upgrade and reconfigure the system as we relocated the various machines.”

Extractly’s sales director, Jake Oldfield, had initially been invited to assess the company’s requirements for a complete new extraction system, including the supply and installation

all the

of a new filter unit. Subsequently, however, following the winding down of production at L&G Modular Homes’ factory in Yorkshire, and obviously with a keen eye for a good deal, Paul Sullivan had acquired a substantial pre-owned filter unit, complete with its 75kW main extraction fan. “Getting it transported across the Pennines and fixed securely in place here was the easy part,” Paul conceded, “but installing new ductwork throughout the factory, and getting the whole system to work safely and efficiently with a second-hand filter unit, was definitely a job best left to the professionals!”

“Although we’d had to forgo an order for a new filter unit,” says Jake Oldfield, “this was still a sizeable project for Extractly and, because the fan and filter Paul had installed was probably powerful enough to extract from a factory twice the size, our revised proposal also included for the supply and installation of Ecogate® energy-saving ‘OnDemand’ extraction control technology.” Without Ecogate® installed, the main fan would be operating at full power, throughout the working day, with a total annual electricity consumption estimated at around 180,000kW.

However, with an Ecogate® greenBOX controller continuously monitoring individual machine usage and, via the Ecogate® PowerMASTER™, continually adjusting fan speed to exactly match extraction demand, huge reductions in electricity consumption are possible – resulting in correspondingly significant cost savings, as Paul confirmed: “Although the fan’s motor has the capacity to give us up to 75kW worth of extraction power, the Ecogate® system provides realtime data on power consumption and typically, with most machines running, we’re only using around 35kW… but that then reduces at break times, as machines are powered down, and once all machines are shut down the fan also shuts down automatically.” And, as Paul also points out: “The workshop is a much calmer, quieter place to work than it used to be!”

Although the Ecogate® system is configured to control electricity usage at current production levels, it has more than enough capacity in reserve to continue providing efficient extraction if RWP invest in further new machinery.

Enabling the fan to operate well below capacity, it’s estimated that Ecogate ® technology will save RWP around 40% off its electricity bills at current usage; giving a projected ROI of under 30 months.
To serve
newly-located machinery, Extractly installed Nordfab Quick-Fit ductwork throughout the expansive production space.

The Ecogate® greenBOX installed at Riverside is the highly intelligent ‘Nxt’ model which has the capacity to control the operation of an extraction system with multiple main fans and up to 72 individual workstations, so the extraction system is now effectively ‘future-proofed’. The Nxt controller has an industrial PC onboard, and a built-in web server provides remote access for fast, automated software updates. In addition, with systems controlled by a greenBOX Nxt, the processor integrated into each 24V DC motorised ‘Smart’ damper provides reports on pressure, air velocity, and air volume and, to ensure employees’ safety, minimal airflow is automatically managed across the entire ductwork system to reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

“I

had a lot of confidence in the team from Extractly”, Paul explains: “In the past we’ve probably been guilty of just going with the cheapest quote for extraction work, but once bitten, twice shy, and Extractly’s onsite installation engineers, led by experienced operations director, Graham Day, were a credit to the company.”

Ecogate’s patented ‘Smart Gate’ is the world’s only automatic damper that continually monitors airflow in its duct.
Extractly’s ‘Clean-up’ tool accessory extracts directly to the main ductwork.
Newly-commissioned, the pre-owned filter and fan unit are in ‘as new’ condition.

Ligna 2025

LIGNA in Hanover from 26 to 30 May 2025 will be one of the most important milestones for the woodworking and wood processing industry on the way to the hoped-for industry turnaround. Three months before the trade show opens its gates in its 50th anniversary year, more than 1,200 exhibitors from all over the world occupy around 112,000 square metres of exhibition space, sending a strong signal in a challenging industry situation.

“LIGNA is currently almost at the same level as the previous event,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Executive Board, Deutsche Messe AG. “In view of the economic conditions, we are very grateful to everyone involved for their confidence in LIGNA. We are convinced that the world’s leading trade fair for the industry will ensure greater productivity and sustainability through fantastic innovations and thus provide the much-needed motivation and confidence for investments.”

Motivation for Emerging from the Downturn Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe AG, sees the strong industry response to LIGNA as a clear vote of confidence: “We are looking forward to a powerful LIGNA anniversary edition and are convinced that the trade fair, together with its exhibitors and visitors, has the potential to inspire renewed confidence in the market. It wouldn’t be the first time that LIGNA has served as the decisive catalyst for restarting the economic engine.”

The significance of LIGNA as the world’s leading trade fair remains strong, and constructive dialogue at LIGNA 2025 is more crucial than ever. Samiron Mondal, CEO of Siempelkamp Business Unit Capital, emphasizes: “LIGNA is the ideal forum for us to meet global customers, showcase

our innovations, and bring the trade fair’s motto – ‘Linking people, driving innovation’ – to life. Moreover, we greatly benefit from the exchange of ideas at the event.” Like Mondal, whose company has been exhibiting at LIGNA since its inception, Rudolf Eickhoff, Technical Managing Director of Venjakob, also underscores the importance of LIGNA 2025: “We are currently facing intense competition in the industry, with declining sales in some areas. This makes it all the more important to discuss the latest sustainable production methods to ensure our customers can remain competitive in the long run. We firmly believe that direct contact at the trade fair not only fosters trust but also lays the foundation for successful projects.”

Industry, Trade, and Forestry: Shaping the Future Together

The three key themes of LIGNA 2025 – CONNECTIVITY, SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION, and ENGINEERED WOOD –are specifically designed to engage stakeholders across the woodworking community, including industry, trade, and forestry. “The digital connectivity for a sustainable wood industry along the entire value chain, with wood and wood-based materials as the materials of the future – this summarizes in one sentence for what industry, craftsmanship, and forestry want to stand for together in the future,” says Stephanie Wager. She adds: “With connectivity, sustainability, and future materials, the focus topics highlight the three core elements of this transformation and will be prominently featured across all seven exhibition areas.”

Horses for courses, not one design fits all, in the UK woodworking Industry

Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd. a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment-continues his series of articles exclusively for Panel and Joinery Production. This month he writes about the many different designs of combustion system that Ranheat manufacture.

Ranheat has nearly always made its systems with a sperate boiler/ heater foundation. The boiler or heater is made using a classic “Horseshoe” design or put in another way an open bottom design.

The boiler or heater then sits on the boiler or heater foundation, made from steel and fire brick lined. Bases are also air cooled that keeps the surface temperature down and also pre-heats the combustion air for even greater efficiency. The combustion system often known as the retort slides into the base known as the boiler/ heater foundation.

Ranheat design and manufacture a wide range of retorts and combustion systems. The basic retort is refractory lined then you can have refractory lined and inclined. Ranheat also make water cooled retorts as well as moving grates and step grates.

Basic refractory lined retort.

This ability to change the combustion system can future proof your investment in a Ranheat System against future changes in legislation and any further reductions in the allowable limits under the guidance notes. For example, prior to 2013 there was no NOx limit in the UK also the particulate limit was 200mg/m3 and it fell to 60mg/m3.

The choice of combustion systems is largely dependent of the type and form that the wood-waste comes in and also the “ash melt temperature”.

Ranheat Water cooled retort for NOx reduction.

As we know industrial wood-waste comes in many forms from virgin timber through to MDF and MFC and also some coatings on the board Melamine or some other finish.

As wood-waste is a by-product of a wood machining process then the burning of the “waste” is regulated by the local Environmental Health department or the Environment agency. In Scotland SEPA is the controlling authority.

The type of local authority permit you require is dependent on the amount of wood and wood-based products you process (purchase) in a 12-month period. If you process more than 1,000 m3 per year you need a permit under guidance note PGN602. This is required even if you don’t have a wood-burner. If you have a wood burner this can be included in your permit.

If you fall below the 1,000 m3 limit, then the wood-burner will need a permit for a SWIP (small waste incineration plant) even if your wood-waste is 100% virgin timber it is still classed as a waste and is permitted. If the wood-burner has a throughput greater than 90 kgs/hour, then there are emission limits as laid down by the guidance note under the MCPD (medium combustion plant directive) and an annual test by an independent test house will be required as a condition of your permit.

If the plant burns between 50kgs and less than 90kgs per hour you will still need a permit but not an annual test. If less than 50 kgs/ hour you need an exemption from the EA. In addition to permits there may be some planning considerations as well.

All industrial chimneys, regardless of fuel need planning permission, some Local Authorities will call it permitted development. In addition to any planning, you will need to complete a chimney height determination to environmental health.

As part of our service, Ranheat will help you with all the permits and permissions and form filling. They can seem quite onerous but are easily complied with.

Ranheat are a manufacturer of almost all of our equipment, except the larger boilers which are made by Danstoker A/S.

By having a separate combustion system and boiler/heater foundation the boiler of heater sits on top of the foundation and is sealed with a 25mm diameter fibreglass rope seal. This allows the base and the boiler/heater to expand and contract at different rates.

This design also allows for a retort or grate repair or replacement without the need to strip down the entire boiler/heater system, making servicing quicker, easier and cheaper than integrated systems.

Ranheat step-grate for low ash melt fuels. On systems over the 90kgs/hour there are strict limits on particulate and NOx.

DEFRA point out that the burning of woodstoves and open fires in a domestic situation gives off more particulate in the form of pm

and NOx than all of the traffic on the UK roads.

Burning wood-waste in a Ranheat automatically fed system with the correct choice of retort and grates meets the strict requirements of the MCPD for NOx and particulate.

With a Ranheat ceramic filter the particulate is reduced to 2mg/m3 against a limit of 60mg/m3 and flue gas recycling reduces the NOx significantly below the limits set by the MCPD.

SICAM 2025 – sold out

SICAM is sold out again this year. ‘We are truly grateful to the many industrial groups and companies from all over the world who, by confirming their participation and occupying all the available space, will once again be the protagonists of SICAM,’ commented Carolina Giobbi, CMO of the International Exhibition of Components, Accessories and Materials for the Furniture Industry.

‘To open a new year being able to announce that next October the furniture industry supplies and materials sector will experience an intense moment of business and meetings, despite the fact that the economic moment is certainly not the most exciting, is for us a source of great satisfaction and a sign of the confidence of many in a future that will certainly be more positive’.

The sixteenth edition will therefore be held from 14th to 17th October 2025 in the traditional venue of Pordenone Fiere, an edition that will once again keep what has always been SICAM’s ‘promises’, so appreciated by the furniture supply chain: a concrete appointment, with a strong focus on the product, where ideas, visions and trends are at home.

Another promise that SICAM keeps is the online publication of the exhibitors’ list well in advance of the date of the event, so that operators from all over the world can plan their presence in the best possible way.

The information and promotion campaign for the appointment has also begun: SICAM will in fact be present at all the most important fairs and events. The first appointments are at KBIS (Kitchen and bath furniture show, in Las Vegas from 25th to 27th February), DelhiWood (New Delhi, from 6th to 9th March) and the Dubai WoodShow (from 14th to 16th April)

We would like to point out that from this year SICAM is a full member of ‘IT-EX’, an association set up to represent Italian trade fair organizers at an international level, supporting the promotion of Italian companies on foreign markets (www.it-exhibition.com).

A system that welcomes 26 thousand exhibitors (11 thousand from abroad) and over 2.8 million visitors, of which 750 thousand from abroad.

‘We are pleased to welcome SICAM,’ says Raffaello Napoleone, president of IT-EX, ‘an excellence of the Italian trade fair sector of international relevance. Its entry makes the association’s representative role, as a privileged interlocutor with the institutions and all the other stakeholders of the supply chains we represent, even stronger’.

‘Our choice has always been to be on the side of companies, to provide an effective and quality service to contribute to their competitiveness,’ concluded Carolina Giobbi. ‘The results we achieve, the initiatives we put in place, the partnerships we establish with organizations and associations all over the world are part of this mission of ours.’

It is worth remembering that SICAM 2024, which took place last October, attracted 692 exhibitors (650 in 2023) from 34 countries to Pordenone, over an area of more than 41,000 square meters, including 19,135 net exhibition square meters (18,420 in 2023); 9,243 companies (8,916 in 2023) from 118 countries (113 in 2023) came to Pordenone to meet them. Just under 30,000 people attended the fair over the four days of the event, including 23,542 visitors and 5,368 exhibitors.

Woodland Heritage Open Woods & Workshops

Woodland Heritage has announced the opportunity to participate in a new initiative, Open Woods & Workshops, which will bring the benefits of the UK’s woodlands and workshops to many.

Throughout June 2025, a network of woodlands and workshops - from forestry estates, smaller woodlands and sawmills to artists’ and architects’ studios, furniture factories and makers - will host open days across the UK. These events offer an exceptional chance to explore rarely accessible places and skills associated with the wonderful trees grown in the UK, and raise funds for Woodland Heritage, helping to grow and support the charity’s wider mission.

Hosts include James Wood and Williams & Cleal in Somerset, The Duchy of Cornwall and Whitney Sawmills in Herefordshire, Albion Timber of Sheffield, Goodwood Estate, makers Gaze Burvill of Hampshire, Treske of Yorkshire and John Makepeace OBE in Dorset, and many more.

Open Woods & Workshops aims to boost engagement in wood culture, growing, milling and making within the UK, as well as help those who grow trees and use wood build connections with others in the timber supply chain. There is also the opportunity to discover more about careers in areas such as forestry and research by meeting industry experts. John Makepeace OBE, one of Britain’s most influential designer-makers, commented: “Can you imagine life without trees in our landscape? Trees stand as beacons of our commitment to future generations. WoodlandHeritage advances the planting and management of trees, vital to nature, our wellbeing, and as a sustainable source of the world’s most beautiful materials. Initiatives like Open Woods & Workshops are so important to promote British grown wood as a resource for current and future generations of craftspeople.”

Geraint Richards, Head Forester to the Duchy of Cornwall and to His Majesty The King said: “As a former Trustee and

still active supporter of Woodland Heritage, I am delighted that the Duchy of Cornwall will be involved in the inaugural year of its Open Woods & Workshops initiative. It is so important that we increase people’s connection to and appreciation of the UK’s trees and home-grown timber. I hope that this programme of events will go from strength to strength in the years to come.”

Savills, one of the world’s leading property advisors, is supporting Open Woods & Workshops. Mark Townsend, Head of Arboriculture and Woodland Management at Savills, commented: “It is over 30 years since Peter Goodwin and Lewis Scott founded Woodland Heritage with the aim to promote a wood culture; to improve the management of woodlands as well as the end use of the timber. The charity’s aim to “Grow trees. Use wood. For our future.” is closely aligned to the aim of the Savills woodland management team and we are really pleased to be lending our support to the upcoming Open Woods & Workshops projects later this year. Now more than ever, it is vital for our woodlands to be well managed and for the demand and use of homegrown timber to be promoted. The UK is currently the third largest importer of timber globally, with over 80% of demand shipped in - this is unsustainable. These events are a wonderful opportunity to champion the whole supply chain - from tiny acorns to fantastic furniture”.

As Accurate As The Day It Was Installed

For anyone involved in manufacturing performance door sets where complex fire resisting, acoustic and security requirements exist. A combination of precision machinery and fine craftsmanship is required to meet the highest quality, performance and certification requirements. One of these precision machines is the Hoffmann MS 35/40-SF combination double mitre saw and router.

As an absolute innovation the Hoffmann MS 35/40-SF delivers two clean precision mitre cuts without break-out, to an exact length in one machine cycle. When both pieces are to be joined together, they can be prepared with one or two dovetail slots in precise positions in the cut faces for jointing with Hoffmann Keys. Ideal for cutting profiles for glazing beads, cornices, plinths etc. in wood, aluminium or plastic at 45°. It can also be used solely as a Double Mitre Saw, the body of which is extremely robust and weighs about 700 kg.

The technology, developed by Hoffmann for damping vibrations of the blades ensures the high precision cut of the MS 35/40-SF and the almost vibration free running of the machine ensures that no further work is required prior to joining. This uncompromising accuracy is particularly important when the finished surface joint is visible. A chip breaker provides a chip-free cut. Another feature is the extremely low noise level which is immediately noticeable. The range has now evolved to include the MS40-SF. With a larger saw blade (400mm), the cutting width increases to 105mm, and a new waste ejector automatically removes off cuts at the front of the unit.

Automatic router positioning is also available via NC axis and touch screen adjustment

The original MS 35-SF has been extremely reliable, and many are still in use today. Over many years of manufacturing, other machines may require replacing or updating, but the Hoffmann MS 35-SF has continued to manufacture a precision product with only routine maintenance required. This combination machine not only cuts the perfect mitres but simultaneously routers the dovetail slots for the Hoffmann Keys. Many companies have had a long relationship with Hoffmann, and many Hoffmann MS 35-SF’s have been in operation for many years and still perform with the expected accuracy and precision that they did the day they were installed.

Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are all accredited with FD30 / FD60 ratings.
