NEWS Screwfix Trade Apprentice Finals – two carpentry and joinery apprentices make it through Finn MacArthur and Sinead McLaren, who both hail from Scotland, have been named as finalists in this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition. Aspiring carpentry apprentice Finn MacArthur, 21, along with apprentice joiner Sinead McLaren, 18, will compete against eight other finalists from across the UK and Ireland in a bid to be crowned Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2025. The winner takes home an incredible prize bundle of tools, training and technology worth £10,000 – while also scooping £2,000 worth of Screwfix vouchers for their college. Since starting her joinery journey, Sinead, from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, has become a strong advocate for introducing the trades to young people when they are considering their career options. She believes it is important to raise awareness early and hopes to one day mentor apprentices of her own. She said: The joinery industry is highly rewarding to work in, and so to be recognised for my skills and dedication at this level is such a huge compliment. “The competition is an incredible opportunity to showcase what I’ve learned so far, while highlighting the importance of trade apprentices in shaping the future of the joinery industry.” Finn, from the Isle of Arran, has developed a passion for sustainability and making homes as energy efficient as possible. Once qualified Finn wants to continue learning more about carpentry and hopes to one day be selfemployed. Finn’s unmatched commitment to sustainability, dedication to learning, and relentless work ethic saw him stand out in the semi-finals, after being selected from more than 2,000 applications. He said: “I love the variety this job brings. I’ll turn my hand to anything – roughing, finishing, roofing – you name it! There’s always something new to learn and I’m looking forward to the final where I can take my creativity and skills to a new level.”

The final Hosted at Google’s UK Office in London the competition’s final will offer the top 10 the chance to network and participate in workshops hosted by industry experts and will see each of them interviewed by an expert panel of judges. The judges include representatives from Screwfix, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE), the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC), the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) and Screwfix Top Tradesperson Mohammed Rahman. We’re thrilled to celebrate this next generation of tradespeople. The talent we see is just getting better and better, so I already know it will be a tricky decision for the judges to make on the day. I wish all finalists the best of luck!”

EVENTS LIGNA 2025 Charts the Future of Sustainable Wood As the global woodworking and wood processing sectors prepare for LIGNA 2025 in Hanover, the forestry segment of the trade fair takes center stage, emphasizing the critical role forests play in securing climate-friendly wood and ensuring long-term raw material availability. With climate change accelerating, forest resilience is under pressure. LIGNA 2025—taking place from May 26–30—will highlight how modern forestry is responding. From smart timber harvesting to climate-adapted reforestation, the industry is combining high-tech tools and sustainable practices to meet the growing demand for renewable wood. As Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe, notes, “People are at the heart of these efforts,” with a strong focus on safe, innovative, and socially responsible forest management. Pavilions 33 and 35 will serve as the core of the forestry exhibition. Pavilion 33, known as the “Forestry Pavilion,” is organized by three major partners: the Forestry Training Centre of the Lower Saxony State Forests (NFBz), the Association of Forestry Contractors AfL Niedersachsen e.V., and the Social Insurance for Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture (SVLFG). Under the theme “People – Technology – Raw Materials,” exhibitors will showcase smart harvesting machines, safety innovations like remote-controlled felling wedges, and cooling clothing for workers in open sunexposed areas—responding to the rise in occupational skin cancer. Battery-powered tools are increasingly replacing traditional petrol-based machinery in young forest maintenance, a shift that reflects sustainability goals but also introduces challenges in charging infrastructure and fire safety.

NFBz will demonstrate advanced cultivation and standestablishment techniques using film and live examples. In Pavilion 35, the spotlight shifts to research and innovation. Wald und Holz NRW and partners will present cutting-edge timber construction systems, including hybrid and hardwood structures for multi-storey buildings, as well as mobile living concepts using birch supports. New strategies for circular wood usage and a forest-based bioeconomy will be explored under the theme “New Raw Material Basis Wood.” The pavilion will also host the special show “Follow the Timber,” presented by the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik (KWF). It will focus on digital traceability technologies, allowing raw wood to be tracked from the forest to the factory—a key step in ensuring sustainability and supply chain transparency. Discussions at the NRW Stage will include circular economy strategies, digitalization in forestry, and EU-level climate policy. Start-up innovations and forward-looking recommendations for the forestry sector’s transformation will also be featured. Among the fair’s highlights is the Forwarder Championship, a long-standing LIGNA tradition where drivers of heavy forestry machinery compete in speed and precision. A festive evening will also see the presentation of the Hans-JürgenNarjes Prize, recognizing excellence in forestry training. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, LIGNA 2025 reaffirms its role as a global hub for innovation, bringing together forestry professionals, policymakers, researchers, and technology leaders in pursuit of a sustainable wood future.

INDUSTRY OHRA - cantilever & panel racks for your carpentry (Free) space for more productivity With seven-metre-high cantilever racks, ‘Ihre Zimmerei’ (“Your Carpentry”) has increased its storage space ninefold at its new location in Metzingen. OHRA’s customised shelving systems with mesh shelves and cantilever bridges provide flexible space for a variety of materials and pallets. Vertical racks enable space-saving storage of panels. Unobstructed transport routes and increased capacities have significantly boosted the company’s productivity. In just 13 years to become the Entrepreneur of the Year in the Reutlingen region Founded in 2011, ‘Ihre Zimmerei’ has developed into one of the largest carpentry businesses in the Reutlingen area, with a turnover of more than 2.5 million euros. In 2024, the company’s founders, Joscha Hohnberg and Mario Müller, were named ‘Entrepreneurs of the Year in the Reutlingen Region’ in the ‘Strategy and Marketing’ category. The rapid growth of the carpentry business ultimately necessitated a move to a new company building in Metzingen. Not only were the workshop and production facilities expanded, but the warehouse was also to be enlarged in order to increase productivity. Storage area increased ninefold The racking system designed for the new warehouse consists of a hot-dip galvanised cantilever rack almost 16 metres long for outdoor use. Inside, a 15-metre-long and a three-metre-

long cantilever rack were installed. The seven-metre-high cantilever racks provide significantly more storage capacity than the floor storage and the much lower racks used at the old location. The cantilever arms of the racks, which can carry up to 1,000 kilograms, were also partially equipped with mesh shelves and arm bridges. This means that a wide variety of different types of wood, consignment items and pallet formats can be stored on the shelves. In addition, the freely suspended cantilever arms allow the heights of the individual storage levels to be adjusted very flexibly. Two additional vertical racks were set up for storing panels of different sizes. The panels are stored vertically in these racks, enabling quick and easy access to the desired panel. All interior shelves were powder-coated in an attractive anthracite grey (RAL 7016) at the request of ‘Ihre Zimmerei’ (your carpentry firm). Convincing advice and execution In addition to the ‘hard’ facts such as the load capacity and the robust, durable construction of the shelves, ‘Ihre Zimmerei’ also impressed with factors such as the quick preparation of offers, the competent advice and the individual planning of the shelves. A customised solution was found for each of the new shelves, which can still be flexibly adapted to changing requirements at a later date. The fast and cost-effective installation of the racks by an Ohra partner (according to Ihre Zimmerei) also left a lasting positive impression on the carpentry firm.

CASE STUDY The Nation’s Favourite Caravan Brand Shifts Gears With HOMAG Machinery With a heritage spanning over 75 years, Bailey of Bristol is the UK’s longest-established independent leisure vehicle manufacturer. As a family-owned business, Bailey has become the Nation’s Favourite brand, accounting for approximately one in three new caravan sales in the UK and now expanding into the motorhome and campervan markets. To future-proof its production and address challenges caused by aging machinery, Bailey of Bristol recently made a significant investment in HOMAG technology. This included five CENTATEQ N-510 CNC machines and two STORETEQ P-500 storage and retrieval systems, marking a huge operational upgrade designed to streamline production, improve efficiency, and support the company’s long-term growth. The need for advanced technology Prior to the investment, Bailey was operating seven CNC machines that were over 20 years old. These machines were frequently breaking down, leading to increased repair and maintenance costs. Additionally, they required manual loading which presented health and safety concerns while slowing down production. “The old machines were a bottleneck and, in all honesty, they were holding the business back,” explained Lee Barrett, Production Manager at Bailey of Bristol. “We needed a solution that would not only improve efficiency but also create a safer working environment for our team. The decision was made to replace the seven aging machines with five new CNCs and two automated storage systems.” Choosing HOMAG Bailey embarked on a thorough vetting process, evaluating three leading machinery suppliers. The selection process began at Ligna, the international trade fair for woodworking and processing technology, where Bailey presented its production requirements to potential suppliers. HOMAG stood out due to its proactive approach and deep understanding of Bailey’s needs.

“Phil Pitchford, the UK CNC Product Manager at HOMAG, was instrumental in the decision,” Lee noted. “Him and his team immediately took the initiative, analysing our production needs and recommending the most effective solutions. We remained open-minded throughout, even sending sample products to each supplier for testing. We also travelled to Germany to see the machines in action. Ultimately, HOMAG emerged as the number one choice.” A key factor in HOMAG’s success was the STORETEQ P-500’s twin bridge system, a unique feature that ensures a continuous material flow. “Our biggest concern was finding a storage system that could keep up with CNC production. The STORETEQ P-500 was the only machine of its kind to offer twin bridges, with which you can consume the stock and refill it in a single shift, eliminating the need for extra hours just to manage stock levels – a massive time saver.” Software integration for greater control Bailey also implemented HOMAG’s woodStore software, which significantly improved stock control and production management. “Before, each CNC had to be manually loaded, placing all the onus on the operator,” Lee said. “Now, all five CNCs are controlled and loaded from the office, improving efficiency and oversight. We’re also working with HOMAG to implement productionManager software to further expand our capabilities.” Installation and training Despite a few hurdles in the run up to installation, HOMAG’s project management team ensured that everything was completed on time, with minimal disruption to production. “The communication throughout the process was excellent,” Lee commented, “and the installation itself went very smoothly. HOMAG then got our operators up to speed and has continued to provide ongoing support as we adapt to the new technology, with further in-depth training scheduled in the near future.” The impact of the investment The new machines have transformed Bailey’s production process, delivering improvements across multiple areas.

16

www.p-j-production.com

“The most noticeable benefit is the time savings,” Lee explains. “As mentioned, with the STORETEQs having two bridges, we have cut our hours significantly. This combined with the capabilities of the CNCs has made us so much more efficient. “Then there’s the health & safety side of things. The machines do all the manual lifting, and it’s all safety barriered off, so the operators are kept a safe distance from any potential hazard. It’s also improved the general mental health of the team, mainly because no-one has to work overtime! “Control wise, as mentioned, we’ve got the software that allows us to manage everything from the office, so we’ve got a lot more visualisation of what’s going on. And in terms of production, even though we are now running two fewer CNCs and one less shift a day, our output has increased significantly. “Quality has improved as well; we’re seeing a lot less damage with the CENTATEQ N-510s, and the accuracy is phenomenal. Our costs are down and we’re wasting substantially less material, which is better for the environment as well as our business.” Above and beyond Reflecting on the experience, Lee praised HOMAG’s dedication and support. “HOMAG has been fantastic from start to finish. They took the time to fully understand our needs and have been extremely accommodating. “For instance, our facility’s ceiling height is slightly lower than what is required for a STORETEQ… so HOMAG actually redesigned the machine, enabling it to fit. That was service beyond what we’d ever expect from a supplier!

“With the machines now up and running, we have full confidence that whenever we contact them with an issue, we will get a prompt resolution. We have numerous different contacts within HOMAG, all of whom are always happy to help. We can’t ask for much more.” Looking to the future Bailey’s investment in HOMAG technology has unlocked new opportunities for growth. “There’s no denying that our previous machines were placing limitations on the business – when you’re running three shifts (24 hours) a day, there’s really not a lot more you can do,” Lee stated. “Now, we operate far superior machines across just two shifts, giving us room to expand our portfolio and production volumes. INDUSTRY Essentials of Biomass boiler and system design Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd. a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment, continues his series of articles exclusively for Panel and Joinery Production. This month he writes about boiler design for burning industrial wood-waste that Ranheat manufacture. Ranheat has nearly always made its systems with a sperate boiler/heater foundation. The boiler or heater is made using a classic “Horseshoe” design or put in another way an open bottom design. Ranheat and Danstoker A/S have been designing Biomass Boilers for over 50 years, this is long before Biomass Boilers became Fashionable as a source of renewable energy. Why? Well in simple terms Denmark had no oil, coal or gas as conventional fuels but they did have large amounts of wood and straw. Other Scandinavian countries like Sweden also had vast amounts of Forestry. Add to this that Scandinavia has long cold winters and it’s easy to see why the Danes got good at designing boilers to run on wood. Ranheat 3 pass multitube boiler tube nest. So, there are some essentials that the design of a successful wood fired boiler must follow: •

Large water content to cope with power loss (not be reliant on separate accumulators).

•

Open bottom design (horseshoe) boilers to enable many different combustion systems to be used with the same boiler.

•

Multi-tube heat exchangers.

•

Genuine 3 or 5 pass design for low flue temperatures and high efficiency.

•

Wet back boiler for increased efficiency (as opposed to dry back boilers)

•

Automated tube cleaning, woodburning inevitably produces soot deposits as burning a solid fuel.

•

Separate considerations when using wood-waste as a fuel.

•

Wood has a higher ash content particularly man-made boards.

•

Long thin boilers with long tube path lengths are hard to clean.

•

Ranheat boilers are wide with short tube lengths and are easier to clean.

•

Good practice is for a true 3 pass boiler with a larger number of shorter tubes as opposed to a smaller number of longer tubes.

Some of these are conditions placed on a system by legislation as the boiler is burning a waste product even if Virgin timber if it is a by-product of a wood manufacturing process. •

Wood-waste burning boilers are not allowed to idle.

•

This makes automatic ignition a No-No as large amounts of NOx and CO are likely to be emitted during start-up and shut down as stoichiometric combustion is not possible during these periods.

•

Wood-waste often contains fine dusts particularly if burning MDF (flour)

•

Glues and resins in man-made boards MDF, MFC, OSB, plywood and hardboard.

As well as the boiler design considerations there are also the permitting requirements: •

All wood-waste burning operations require a permit to burn waste that is a by-product of a wood machining process even if burning Virgin Timber.

•

The systems are divided into 3 ranges, up to 50kgs/hr. up to 90 kgs/hr and over 90kgs/hr. There are 3 different permits or exemptions one for each size.

•

All installations must have planning permission for the chimney (or written permitted development)

•

All installations need chimney height approval from environmental health.

All of these permits and permissions must be in place before the installation goes ahead. All installations must meet the guidance as laid down in the MCPD (Medium Combustion Plants Directive) Unlike previous legislation the MCPD is retrospective, and will apply to all installations by 2030, Plants over 5MW had to comply by 1st January 2025 and plants under 5MW have until 2030.

Ranheat 4 pass high efficiency boiler Equally there are further considerations when using woodwaste as a fuel to the design of a boiler. T: 01604 750005 E: sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

CASE STUDY Flegg Limited Unlocking New Levels of Efficiency with HOLZ-HER When brothers Harry and George Flegg, the managing directors of Flegg Limited, founded their bespoke joinery and carpentry business in 2018, they started from humble beginnings, crafting furniture in a single garage. Both had completed apprenticeships and accumulated years of experience as employees in the carpentry industry, giving them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to offer something truly special to the market. Today, Flegg Limited operates from a spacious, state-of-theart workshop, delivering high-quality, bespoke furniture and joinery solutions for both residential and commercial clients. The business has built a strong reputation for its craftsmanship and personalised, customer-focused service, creating exceptional pieces that transform spaces and cater to the unique needs of each client. But as demand for their work grew, so did the complexity of their operations. To maintain their reputation for quality while improving efficiency, Flegg Limited recognised the need to invest in machinery that could help streamline their processes. After experiencing ongoing reliability issues with their previous glue pot edgebander from another manufacturer, the team sought a more robust and efficient solution. Following detailed discussions with Richard Hird, HOLZ-HER’s Area Sales Manager they opted to invest in the Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander. Panel Joinery & Production spoke to Harry and George about the decision-making process and their experience since the installation. After facing frustrations with their old glue pot edgebander, from another manufacturer, they decided to invest in the HOLZ-HER Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander.

“We were dealing with a lot of problems with our old system, burnt-on glue, blockages, and inconsistent flow,” explains Harry. “It was time-consuming and slowed us down. That’s when we discovered HOLZ-HER’s Glue Jet system, and immediately we saw it as the solution we’d been looking for.” The new machine didn’t just solve the immediate problems, it brought about a massive shift in Flegg Limited’s production process. “The change was transformational,” says George. “The HOLZ-HER edgebander eliminated the issues we were facing and significantly improved both our productivity and the reliability of our workshop. It was a game-changer.” The impact was felt almost immediately. One of the standout benefits was the increase in productivity. “We no longer waste time waiting for machines to warm up or have to deal with inconsistent glue application,” says Harry. The HOLZ-HER edgebander offered quick start-up times of just 2-3 minutes and could batch-process panels without the delays caused by issues with their previous system Quality was another area that saw immediate improvement. With the Glue Jet system, Flegg Limited was able to achieve a cleaner, more consistent glue application. The precision of the nozzle system meant there was no excess glue, and the finish was flawless. “We no longer had to battle with excess glue and poor tape adhesion,” says George. “The quality has improved drastically. We don’t need to do any handfinishing anymore; the machine delivers a perfect edge every time.” The HOLZ-HER edgebander didn’t just make everyday jobs easier it allowed the business to take on more complex work with ease. “We’ve been able to complete several projects involving solid lipping, which we previously avoided because of how time-consuming they were,” explains Harry. “Now, it’s quick and efficient, and the results are fantastic.”

34

www.p-j-production.com

But the benefits weren’t just technical. Flegg Limited also saw improvements in efficiency that weren’t immediately obvious but had a massive impact on their bottom line. “Before, if a small part needed a re-cut, it could throw off the entire schedule,” says George. “Now, with consistent, accurate output from all our machines, we don’t experience those delays. It’s more than just saving time though; it’s about keeping the production process smooth and consistent.” Perhaps the most surprising benefit of all has been the reliability of the machine. The HOLZ-HER Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander is fitted with servo motors to enable automatic setting and recall of programs, essentially deskilling the operation and delivering repeatability. “Unlike staff, the edgebander doesn’t take sick days,” jokes Harry. “It’s always ready to go, and that’s incredibly valuable when you’re running a busy workshop.” Training and support from HOLZ-HER played a significant role in ensuring the team could quickly get up to speed with the new machine. “The training we received was first-class,” says George. “It wasn’t just about how to use the machine; it was about understanding the principles behind it. That knowledge has made all the difference in ensuring we maintain the highquality finish our clients deserve.” Today, Flegg Limited is operating more efficiently than ever. The investment in the HOLZ-HER edgebander has allowed

the company to increase its output without compromising on quality. “We’re delivering products of exceptional quality, meeting deadlines, and able to take on more work all without sacrificing the craftsmanship our clients rely on,” says Harry. For a growing small business like Flegg Limited, investing in the right equipment has been key to staying competitive in an increasingly demanding market. “It’s been one of the best investments we’ve made,” says George. “We’re able to handle a higher volume of bespoke projects while still delivering the highest level of quality that made us successful in the first place.” The transformation at Flegg Limited demonstrates that the right investment can elevate a business to the next level. The HOLZ-HER edgebander has played a crucial role in their ongoing success, ensuring that as they continue to expand, they remain at the forefront of the carpentry and joinery industry. Paul Nightingale, Holz-Her’s National Sales Manager said; “The Streamer 1057 XL Power offers an affordable solution to automation, based on our best selling, Auriga 1308 XL Power, it effortlessly delivers finished panels, directly from the machine. I encourage all customers to visit our showroom and see for themselves.”

INDUSTRY Leitz Tooling Shares Insights Into Tooling & Maintenance for Panel processing In the dynamic world of panel and joinery production, the selection and upkeep of tooling can often be a major contributor to success or failure on the production line. From the initial cut to the final finishing process, the performance of saw blades, router cutters, and drill bits directly dictates workpiece quality and has massive implication on finishing processes such as paint application. The allure of cutting-edge and automated machinery often takes centre stage, but investing in high-performance tooling often leads to improved efficiency, reduced downtime and greater profitability. Choosing The Right Tools For Your Application & Machinery: Choosing the right tool for your application sounds easy, but making the wrong choice can have serious implications on your work’s quality, performance and cycle times. One of the most overlooked aspects in panel processing are the RPM’s and feed speeds of tooling. Lower quality tools that run at slower RPM‘s and feed speeds, typically resulting in greater cycle times, reduced output and poorer surface finish. High quality tooling such as specialist sawblades from Leitz can significantly improve productivity. In 2021, SD manufacturing approached Leitz tooling looking for a way to streamline their panel processing and were introduced to the RazorCut sawblades for panel processing. RazorCut sawblades increased production output to 50m/min from 20m/min, resulting in a 30% increase in panel production for SD manufacturing. The majority of Leitz tools are manufactured from solid carbide for improved feed speed and cutting performance. Another major consideration when purchasing tooling is the number of teeth or wings. The number of teeth on a tool has a direct impact on the cutting performance and tool life. The tooth arrangement or geometry can also impact tool life, surface finish and feed / cutting speeds. Tools with a higher number of teeth typically create finer and smoother surface finish. This is because each tooth removes less material, resulting in a more precise and less aggressive cut – which naturally increases the tool life. However, blades with fewer teeth are designed for faster, rougher cuts and may be more appropriate for certain applications. When working with

delicate materials like transparent plastics, laminates and solid surface; cutting tools with more teeth are the most suitable. Creative Homes, one of Scotland’s leading Kitchen manufacturers, has developed a close relationship with Leitz over the last 3 years. Creative Homes manufacture kitchen surface tops with Krion® solid surface and were looking for a way to improve finish quality when sawing. Leitz introduced Creative Homes to BrillianceCut sawblades. Featuring a high tooth count, these sawblades have a special tooth geometry for very smooth cutting surfaces and tearfree cutting edges. This lead to a massive decrease in rework for Creative Homes, and MD Alan commented “The new blades cut through material like butter, with much less wastage and no chipping. Doing it right the first time has been invaluable”. Correct Tool Maintenance: Correct tool maintenance is another crucial but overlooked aspect of joinery and panel processing. The vast majority of machinery operators do not maintain and look after their tools. Simply cleaning your tools after use can have a massive impact on performance and tooling costs. Wood resin, especially from more acidic timbers like Accoya, sticks onto the cutting edges of tools and causes significant wear over time. Over time wood resin can build up on the cutting edge of the tool, changing the tool geometry and negatively impacting accuracy and cutting performance. Wood resin also causes increased friction and heat when machining, other than becoming a fire hazard, this leads to poorer surface finish when machining. Leitz router cutters, such as the UK-Made G-Tec range, are made from specially formulated carbide. Utilising a mixed binder, this carbide grade is highly resistant to leching, resulting in superior durability when processing abrasive or acidic materials like Accoya or MDF. Meaning your tools perform better for longer and typically result in reduced tooling costs. Tool & saw sharpening is another important area of tooling maintenance. Many machinists run their tools to blunt, believing that this lets them get the most out of their tooling. Sharp tools cut through material with reduced cutting forces, resulting in less power consumption and tear out.

38

www.p-j-production.com

Because a sharp tool cuts more efficiently, you can often increase feed speeds without compromising cut quality or putting excessive strain on the equipment. This translates to higher production rates and quicker cycle times – directly impacting the bottom line. Leitz Tooling operates a network of 8 saw & tool sharpening facilities across the UK. With a team of experienced and dedicated technicians, Leitz always removes the minimum cutting material ensuing that your tools achieve their maximum tool life. Leitz microscopically checks cutting edges after sharpening to ensure tool performance & consistency. Saw & Tool Management Systems: Another way Leitz go above and beyond is their tool management system, Leitz tool management offers their customers a detailed reporting and management system for their tooling. The system includes expected lifetime for tools and tracks the number of sharpens on each tool, allowing customers to know when their tools will reach end of life and enabling them to be prepared with replacement tools. This system is ideal for larger operations with a high quality of tooling and machinery and provides realistic expectations for tool performance based on past data. Leitz Tooling Offers this service free of charge it its customers. Leitz tooling analyse this data to make technical and machining recommendations. Leitz can see when a tool has not performed as it should and can investigate why – typically leading to process improvements or new tool recommendations for their businesses.

CASE STUDY AJB Group invests in a HOMAG package to launch fire door manufacturing Established in 1999, AJB Group has built a reputation for delivering high-quality internal joinery, external doorsets, windows, composite doors, and mouldings. From its 40,000-square-foot factory in Corby, the business serves residential, commercial, and new-build developments across the UK. Sustainability is at the core of AJB’s ethos: the factory generates 2.6 million kW of renewable energy each year using a wood combustion biomass system, resulting in zero fossil fuel use and zero waste to landfill. With an expert team, cutting-edge technology, and a commitment to engineering excellence, AJB continues to set itself apart. Most recently, the company made the strategic decision to enter the fire door market – a move that required investment in new machinery. Behind the scenes of the best-kept secret “Historically, we were a solid timber joinery manufacturer,” explains Amarjit Binji, Managing Director at AJB. “When it came to fire doors, we only made the frames, specifically for a very high-end fire door manufacturer. We did this for 23 years and, being behind the scenes for that amount of time, naturally we learned a thing or two – including what was probably the best-kept secret in the industry.”

40

www.p-j-production.com

When that client unexpectedly ceased trading in 2024, AJB saw an opportunity to utilise their knowledge and step forward. “Rather than look for another fire door customer, we decided to take control and manufacture our own fire doors. To do that, we needed the right kit.” A consistent, high-performance solution Although AJB had used another CNC brand for 15 years, this time they wanted a full package from a single manufacturer: a beam saw, an edge bander, and a CNC machine. “Everyone spoke very highly of HOMAG and its machines,” says Amarjit. “And we liked the idea of a consistent setup across all three machines.” After consulting with HOMAG and visiting their Castle Donington showroom, AJB opted for the SAWTEQ S-300 panel dividing saw, the EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander, and the CENTATEQ P-110 CNC machine. “We were certain about the saw and the edge bander,” Amarjit shares. “The big decision was switching CNC brands – we were used to a different setup. But we knew that for this to work, we needed all three machines under one brand… and anyway, the CENTATEQ P-110 looked impressive to say the least, so in the end it wasn’t too difficult of a decision.”

Excellent training and smooth transition The transition to the HOMAG CNC was made easier by HOMAG’s comprehensive training programme. “Essentially we were novices with all three machines,” says Amarjit, “but the training got us up to speed quickly. Two of our team spent a couple of days at Castle Donington, and they came back confident and ready to go.”

With AJB expecting a return on investment within three years, the future looks bright. “We wanted to be in control of our future. With these HOMAG machines, we’re confident we can deliver the quality and consistency the fire door market demands.”

Installation was just as smooth. “They came in, installed everything, levelled it all, commissioned it, and came back to make sure everything was running as it should.” Must-have machines for fire doors Each machine plays a critical role in AJB’s fire door production line. “The SAWTEQ S-300 is an absolute must for its speed and accuracy. The EDGETEQ S-500 replaces the old-school process of gluing and clamping – and does so in style. And the CNC is essential for routing the lock boxes, cutting the pockets, and rebating around the doors. Without it, the precision and efficiency just wouldn’t be there.” Although AJB is new to fire door manufacturing, Amarjit is impressed. “We can’t compare these to other fire door machines, but based on our experience so far, this is the pinnacle of woodworking.” The right recommendation Looking back, Amarjit is pleased with how HOMAG supported the transition. “They weren’t trying to sell us the most expensive options. They recommended a package that suited our business, and they got it right.”

FEATURE Makita’s New Tabless XGT Battery Delivers Improved Performance for the Most Demanding Tasks Makita has launched an innovative new battery for its 40VMax XGT range of high-performance tools. The 4.0Ah BL4040F battery is the first Makita battery to include cutting-edge tabless technology, which allows more efficient power delivery, better runtimes, and cooler running. As the latest Makita F-Type battery, it is engineered for performance on the very highest demand applications.

As with all Makita’s XGT 40VMax batteries, the BL4040F is built for the toughest environments with an impact resistant and shock absorbing casing to protect the battery cells, as well as a triple layer structure to protect against water and dust ingress. XGT batteries also feature Makita’s digital communication system that connects the tool and battery to actively protect against overload, over-discharge and overheating.

The tabless lithium-ion cells in the new BL4040F eliminates the bottleneck caused by current concentration by connecting the entire end of the electrode to the end of the cell, instead of connecting to tabs at each end.

The XGT range has over 125 40VMax and 80VMax (2x 40VMax) products including drills, impact drivers and wrenches, angle grinders, nailers, dust extractors, and circular, mitre and reciprocating saws. There is also a wide range of XGT garden and grounds maintenance machines including mowers, chain saws, blowers, brush cutters, hedge trimmers and earth augers.

With a larger connection area inside the cell, heat generation is minimised. This means that even under high load, the cell temperature is reduced compared to standard designs, which has a positive effect on the overall service life of the battery. A further benefit is that the battery can be charged immediately after intense use, with no need for a cooling phase, meaning shorter overall charging times. The tabless 4.0Ah BL4040F battery delivers up to 36% longer runtimes and operates 32% cooler compared to the standard 4.0Ah BL4040. Like all Makita F-Type batteries, the BL4040F is a high-output battery designed for enhanced performance and better runtimes on higher drain tools such as chainsaws, breakers and demolition hammers. The new 4.0Ah BL4040F delivers the same 2.1kw maximum output as the 5.0Ah BL4050F. This means customers now have the choice of the larger, higher capacity 5.0Ah battery or the smaller, lighter 4.0Ah battery to achieve the high output that demanding tasks require. In fact, the BL4040F is 34% more compact and 28% lighter than the BL4050F.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita said: “The new tabless BL4040F is specifically designed for the most demanding applications and will deliver superior performance and runtimes as well as the long service life that customers expect from Makita products. The launch of this cutting edge, next generation battery is just the latest part of our ongoing drive to ensure professionals have the high-performance products they need.”

SAVE ENERGY REDUCE COSTS

In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day. Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money! With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine. With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average.

INDUSTRY Beaded Cabinet-Face-Frames required, and the frames can be finished immediately upon assembly. All dovetail routing machines are set-up with a complete fixture set to process stiles and rails, but can also be used to process regular mitre joints and butt joints. They are also available in Digital and Pneumatic models which increase accuracy and speed. MU-3 Entry level version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots. MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high precision work. MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P is operated by foot-pedal control. A cabinet with a beaded face frame immediately conveys a high level of quality and craftsmanship and distinctly sets it apart from other utilitarian overlay-door cabinets. The most common way to manufacture beaded face frames is to use square profiles and to apply the bead profile separately. The major disadvantage to this system is the time required to produce a complete frame. Apart from time consumption, mismatched grain and mitre joints, due to inconsistent bead profiles can be a concern. Any of these faults are only highlighted by being painted. A dissatisfied customer or a call-out, will damage not only the cabinetmaker’s reputation but also the bottom line. Clearly, the most efficient way to produce beaded face frames is to start with pre-beaded profiles. All of the abovementioned disadvantages are then eliminated from the start. Several systems have been devised, but their set-up and calibration are a time-consuming process and their cost (over €18K plus tooling) places them out of the reach of most bespoke cabinetmakers. The Solution.

MU-3 PD Pneumatic/Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 P with a digital two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. The MU-3 and the MU-3 D have a workpiece thickness capacity of up to 140mm – in the versions MU-3 P and MU-3 PD this increases to 170mm. Infinitely adjustable routing depths up to 95mm and protection against break-through of the finished surface. Also new is the two-function hand lever for even faster machine cycles when routing smaller workpieces. The scale tapes in the table and now also in the rear fences assist the quick and precise positioning of the workpieces. All versions of the new MU-3 routing machine are equipped with a motor carriage which has vernier adjustment for the fine setting of the router cutter and hence the tension of the joint. All of the machines and the full range of products and methods are detailed on the Hoffmann website.

The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers cabinetmakers of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient method to manufacture beaded face frames, whether it is in single or series production. The process begins with pre-beaded profiles. Stiles are notched in pairs and the rails are coped on a fixed blade, Morso guillotine style notching machine. These NF series machines are manufactured by Dan-List (Morso) in Denmark. They cut all kinds of wood, plastic, MDF and plywood and leave the cut surface of the profile perfectly smooth and accurate, requiring no further preparation before joining. For a standard, stile to rail connection, this operation takes about 5 seconds with our manual foot-operated notching machine (the automatic model is even faster). The second step takes place on the Hoffmann MU-3 dovetail routing machine equipped with special fixtures for beaded and notched material. Dovetail keyways are routed into all mating parts and the frames are assembled by applying some glue and inserting Hoffmann Dovetail Keys. These Keys draw the parts together to form a tight, secure and permanent joint. No large clamping tables or bar clamps are

Go Light With Lamello This May, Lamello is launching its ground-breaking solution for connecting lightweight construction materials: the new LC P-16. Available to view for the first time at this year’s Interzum and LIGNA, the LC P-16 is the newest addition to the P-System family. Designed for use on cardboard or plastic honeycomb, wood fiber or hard foam like XPS with surface layers made of wood composite, it combines the advantages of lightweight construction with efficient Clamex technology – enabling strong, detachable connections without concealed timber edges. To work efficiently with such lightweight panels, the slender connector is anchored into the surface layers of the material and acts as an adapter for a further connector which simply slides into position. This allows for a strong, detachable connection without the time-consuming process of concealing timber edges or adhering to adhesive drying time. It also simplifies the machining and assembly process without compromising on aesthetics, stability and quality. It can be used with all P-14 connectors from the Clamex P family. The LC P-16 provides strong anchorage for the Clamex P-14 connector halves in the edges of a lightweight panel or in the surface where layers are more an 4mm thick.

Alternatively, the Clamex P-14 Flexus and Clamex P-14 CNC connectors can also be used to suit the application. For optimum strength in the lightweight panel, the Clamex P-10 is recommended as a counterpart. Available in three product sizes - P-16 × 11, LC P-16 × 17 and LC P-16 × 22 – the use of the connector enable precise joints for the most common lightweight panels. Machining with two to three operations is carried out either with the Zeta P2 or with a CNC machining centre. The LC P-16 configurator determines the right product size and machining positions for the respective application. Shaye Chatfield, Lamello Area Sales Manager International for the UK and Ireland says: ““Whether in the furniture industry, interior fittings or vehicle construction, lightweight construction offers a flexible, resilient and sustainable solution. The new LC P-16 opens up new design possibilities. From motorhomes and yacht production to businesses where transport weight is paramount, it offers an effective and highly flexible solution. It’s also suitable for use on large mounted shelves or sideboards spanning more than a metre long thanks to its high rigidity.” With the LC P-16, Lamello sets new standards in lightweight construction technology – for aesthetic, strong and efficient joints that meet the highest demands. From 5 May 2025, the new connector will be available from all authorised distribution partners in the UK and Ireland or can be viewed on Lamello’s Interzum stand (hall 7.1, C050-D051) and LIGNA stand (hall 13, B22).

FEATURE William Hughes Expands Aerospace Quality Programme

Just a few of the Continuous Improvement elements at William Hughes.

Following the successful deployment of an in-depth quality assurance programme mandated by a major global aeroengine customer, William Hughes Ltd., a leading spring and wire form manufacturer, is expanding the project’s impressive operational outcomes and best practices to other areas of its manufacturing operations. “Our aeroengine customer gave us a structure and planning framework based on its preferred quality methodology,” explains Nick Allsop, Production Supervisor, at William Hughes. “This was fully implemented, used regularly and then assessed, and resulted in the cell being awarded a silver-level quality rating, with a suggestion from the customer that the team applies for the gold standard.” QA has always sat at the heart of William Hughes, but a formalised, transferable program makes it easier to compare and contrast with industry best practice. Indeed, buy-in for the wider deployment was made significantly easier when other manufacturing cells witnessed the operational benefits from even the simplest elements of the programme: shadow boards for each machine and activity meaning that tools are always in the right place, tool boxes with foam inserts ensuring each tool is replaced correctly, floor markings and

railings defining exactly where machinery is positioned and which space is left clear. Nick Allsop continues: “We took the customer’s framework and complemented it with a 3C methodology (concern, cause and countermeasure) and a 5S lean philosophy (sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain), both of which combine to create the new company-wide best practice. “This type of project requires a champion to drive it and commitment from every level of the company, especially from the boardroom” Nick concludes. “But when the benefits start to shine through, people soon realise that effort expended at the front end has significantly positive long-term payback going forwards. It is also a continuous journey of self-improvement as we look for new opportunities, all of which will be reflected in the higher levels of quality, products, service and support that we can deliver to all our customers.” T: 01963 363377 E: sales@wmhughes.co.uk www.wmhughes.co.uk

CASE STUDY James Latham Steps Up to The Next Level Premium Shinnoki makes a statement in award-winning Channel Islands residential renovation. Situated in the North of Guernsey, Puddleduck is a testament to innovative green design and architectural transformation. Conceived by the award winning DLM Architects, this striking two-storey home sets a benchmark in sustainable living. What was once a dilapidated and damp 1950s bungalow has been reimagined into a low-carbon, visually captivating residence, overcoming a number of inherent challenges, including poor insulation and an inefficient layout. The project has turned an outdated structure into a modern, open-plan family home with high-end finishes and four spacious bedrooms, seamlessly blending style, comfort, and sustainability. From the moment lead architect Simon Cottell and the DLM project team set eyes on Puddleduck, they knew it was a chance to break new ground. Inspired by the home’s Channel Islands setting and coastal backdrop, they set out to develop a dwelling with a clean, minimalist aesthetic blending elegance and simplicity. James Latham, the UK’s leading independent distributor of timber, panels and decorative surfaces, played a pivotal role to help bring this vision to life, supplying Decospan’s luxurious Shinnoki veneer for the second-floor extensions fitted-furniture and feature walls. A majestic materials makeover The selection of Shinnoki is a great example of where a highly-prescriptive design brief dictates the selection of the material, and arose when DLM started to consider the project fixtures, fittings and features. In line with the brief, the team knew they had to specify products which were not only stylish and sustainable, but strong enough to withstand every spill, scratch and knock of continuous occupancy. They also wanted to use lighter-hued materials that reflected the client’s preferred palate of subtle white, cream and grey punctuated by elements of varnished timber and calacatta marble. Step-by-step, premium materials were selected for interior finishes across the length and breadth of the property. However, when it came to choosing the timber for the fitted furniture and statement walls, DLM realised it needed a product which balanced form and function. In a busy family home, solid timber would quickly stain, scuff or dent, losing its visual appeal. Furthermore, with floor to ceiling windows, letting in considerable amounts of sunlight, there was a risk of bleaching, detracting from the intended look and feel. Asking the experts To find the perfect solution they consulted longtime contracting partner Jame Allez Carpentry & Construction, which approached distributor James Latham for support. The latter’s experienced specification team was impressed with the project’s unusual, forward-thinking yet highly prescriptive brief. Seeing it as a welcome challenge, it suggested an engineered timber solution compiled a

shortlist of which a clear winner quickly emerged: Shinnoki Shinnoki has become a go-to for luxury fitted furniture, cabinetry and wall finishing, and perfectly fitted the meticulous brief. Manufactured by Decospan, one of the world’s most innovative brands of high-quality interior décors, it uses real wood veneers with the tactility of the surface maintaining the feel of solid timber to the touch. This authenticity, the robust MDF core and its low-waste production stood out for DLM, balancing the holy grail of style, strength and sustainability they were looking for. The variety of lighter-shaded boards was also a key selling point, with the architects selecting understated, yet visually compelling Milk Oak and Bondi Oak boards. Used across the upstairs area, its use helped the architects achieve the desired ‘spare and fair’ atmosphere. Not only did the Shinnoki complement the space’s minimalist look, it also helped the finished interiors achieve a soothing and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for rest, relaxation and family life. This small, yet significant, contribution helped DLM neatly meet the design brief’s core specification criteria by delivering stylish, sustainable and hard-wearing finishes which surpassed client expectations. According to project lead, DLM’s Simon Cottell, “We chose Shinnoki as it’s not only very attractive, particularly the long grain of the veneer, it’s really easy to work with to book match to achieve visual consistency. Furthermore, its tactility, some might say irresistible to touch, combined with its impressive durability meant it delivered a realistic solid timber look with added resilience. It’s made a big contribution in bringing our vision to life and acts as a unifying force, bringing all Puddleduck’s interior elements and features together. We’re really grateful to James Latham and Jame Allez Carpentry & Construction, whose expertise and advice directly contributed to making Puddleduck’s interiors so visually striking.”

FEATURE Breaking Down Barriers in Timber Window Manufacturing “In March I attended my first Joinery Network event hosted by Teknos UK in Bicester. My thanks to the TJN team for the invite and a thoroughly enjoyable and informative day led by a team who are passionate about passing on their extensive experience and knowledge. In an exclusive PJP interview with Andy Ball, Luke Piper and Ben Mitchell we delved into the background and aims of The Joinery Network.” Clare Hollister, Editor Panel & Joinery Production How Lignum Systems is Helping Joiners Compete and Thrive For years, consistency and certification have been standard in the PVC window market — but timber joinery often struggled to keep pace. Recognizing the gap Luke Piper and Andy Ball came up with the concept of The Joinery Network and its trade mark Lignum Systems to level the playing field. “In PVC, about 95% of windows you buy are fully tested and meet all building regulations. But in timber, unless you’re buying from big firms, you could be getting products made with outdated tools and practices that simply don’t comply,” explains Andy Ball. To solve this, The Joinery Network developed Lignum a fully certified, tested system for timber window and door manufacturing. They then developed training courses for joiners at an affordable rate which means on completion they are licensed and can produce under the Lignum name — ensuring quality, compliance, and consistency within the trade. Affordable Certification and Training One of the biggest hurdles for independent joinery firms is the cost and complexity of certification. Testing one window design alone can cost £40,000, with no guarantees of passing. “If you want to set up your own certified system, you’re looking at £150,000–£200,000 — assuming you even have the technical knowledge,” says Andy.

By contrast, joining the Lignum network is designed to be affordable. Licensing costs are reasonable, and training is structured around the needs of each joiner. “It’s typically about a day per product,” Andy explains. “But beyond just making the window, our trainers look at factory layout, workflows, spraying processes — all to boost efficiency and profitability.” Former joinery owner Owen Dare leads much of the training, with growing support from affiliated technical experts. The team help businesses modernize their setups and improve throughput, often recommending costeffective upgrades like modern spindle moulders that pay for themselves within a year. Low-Skill, High-Quality Manufacturing One key Lignum principle is designing for ease of use. “We created a low-skill system — not because skills aren’t important, but because removing unnecessary complexity helps ensure consistency,” explains Ben, another key figure at Lignum. Investment vs. Return Though investing in new tooling can sound daunting, Ben frames it practically: “£30,000 might sound like a lot, but when you compare it to the cost of a skilled joiner — factoring in holidays, sick leave, and training — it quickly becomes clear the machinery offers much better value over time.”

60

www.p-j-production.com

For small operations, spindle moulders and Lignum tooling can start from around £13,000. For larger workshops, full CNC or window lines range between £40,000–£50,000 — still a fraction of the cost compared to aluminium or PVC production lines, which often require investments north of £500,000. Grants like the “Made Smarter” program can help further, offering match funding up to £20,000 for machinery purchases involving a digital element. Timber Windows: Growing Market, Growing Opportunity Consumer interest in timber is surging. Google searches for “timber windows” and “timber doors” have risen 50% yearon-year for the past three years. Sustainability is a major driver, as customers seek natural, renewable materials over plastics or metals. According to Lignum, timber windows now offer the best combination of profitability, entry cost, and sustainability in the window and door sector — with strong support from initiatives like Secured by Design, the police-backed security certification. A Growing Network with Big Ambitions Today, Lignum has a network of around 50 licensed joinery companies across the UK, able to manufacture consistently high-quality certified products. This allows smaller companies to take on bigger projects — even full housing developments — by collaborating within the network. “We’re giving smaller joiners the tools to compete with big firms, and to keep British manufacturing strong,” Andy says. “There’s £120 million worth of imported timber windows coming into the UK every year. We want to bring that business back home.”

Looking Ahead Government and industry bodies are beginning to take notice of Lignum’s work. Stronger commitments to sustainability and homegrown manufacturing are opening new doors. Collaborations with organizations like Secured by Design and Timber Development UK are helping to build credibility. While the team is growing organically, their vision is bold: “We want to build the biggest network of certified timber window manufacturers in the UK,” Ben says. “But it’s not just about size. It’s about giving businesses — and the industry — the right tools to thrive.”
