Bend

The Portuguese Bend region of the Palos Verdes Peninsula features a dynamic landscape including beaches, coves, wildlife, microclimates, and geological phenomena. A massive landslide in the 1950s is responsible for shaping the area. The land’s continued movement has resulted in glorious wide open space making Portuguese Bend the largest area of natural vegetation remaining on the Peninsula. This land is also steeped in Palos Verdes history. The scenic vistas of Portuguese Bend offer a breathtaking tapestry of coastal beauty and rugged landscapes. The dramatic cliffs and rolling hillsides of Portuguese Bend frame a mesmerizing tableau, where azure waters meet the rugged coastline. From vantage points along the winding roads and hiking trails, one can witness the majestic sight of waves crashing against the rocky shores, creating a symphony of sound and motion. The allure of Portuguese Bend lies not only in its expansive ocean views but also in the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this unique ecosystem. Coastal shrubs, wildflowers, and native plants adorn the landscape, while seabirds soar overhead, adding to the area’s natural charm. Sunsets at Portuguese Bend are a spectacle to behold, painting the sky with a palette of vibrant hues that reflect off the ocean’s surface, casting a spellbinding glow across the horizon. Whether exploring its scenic trails, indulging in seaside picnics, or simply reveling in the tranquility of the coastal vistas, Portuguese Bend offers an immersive experience in nature’s grandeur, a picturesque haven where the beauty of land and sea converge in harmonious splendor. The Vanderlip Estate

The Vanderlip Estate once stood as a sprawling testament to grand ambition and vision. Acquired by Frank Vanderlip in 1913, this vast expanse of approximately 16,000 acres was envisioned as a self-sustaining utopia, a blend of residential living, agriculture, and scenic beauty. Vanderlip’s dream for the estate included the creation of Villa Narcissa, an opulent mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean, alongside plans for farms, scenic roadways, and a thriving community. However, despite Vanderlip’s grand aspirations, economic challenges, including the impact of World War I, hindered the full realization of his vision. Financial difficulties compelled him to scale back his plans, leading to the sale of portions of the estate for development.

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park

Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove, nestled within the scenic enclave of Portuguese Bend, are part of the Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, boasting stunning cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and captivating tide pools. Today, the Vanderlip Estate has evolved considerably. Much of the land has been repurposed, with residential neighborhoods, commercial developments, and recreational spaces. Echoes of its past grandeur linger in the stunning landscapes, remnants of architectural elements, and the affluent aura that still pervades parts of Palos Verdes. While the estate no longer exists in its original form, the legacy of Frank Vanderlip’s ambitious vision remains embedded in the fabric of Palos Verdes, contributing to its unique history and shaping its present-day character as an upscale coastal community.

with diverse marine life.. Nestled adjacent to Abalone Cove, Sacred Cove offers a more secluded and serene experience. Accessible via a rugged trail, this smaller cove provides a tranquil escape, embraced by towering cliffs and breathtaking ocean views. The tranquil ambiance of Sacred Cove invites contemplation and appreciation of nature’s beauty in an unspoiled setting.

Wayfarers chapel

Wayfarers Chapel, nestled in the serene landscape of Portuguese Bend, stands as a stunning testament to architectural beauty and spiritual sanctity. Designed by renowned architect Lloyd Wright, son of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, this awe-inspiring structure embodies organic architecture in its purest form.

Completed in 1951, this sacred space welcomes visitors of all faiths and backgrounds. Its serene setting atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean offers a tranquil retreat, inviting introspection and connection with nature and spirituality.

Hardin House

The gatehouse which served as an entrance to what is known as the Hardin House in Portuguese Bend was originally built by Frank Vanderlip’s sister Ruth and her husband Eddie Hardin. As a gift to his beloved sister, Vanderlip gave Ruth 48 acres of land lining the pacific coast where she and Eddie built their home. After Ruth’s death the majority of the Hardin House estate was acquired by the city of Rancho Palos Verdes. Today this area is known as Abalone Cove Shoreline Park.

View towards Pleistocene epoch marine terraces on the Peninsula

Over 115 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, plate tectonics forced the Pacific plate to slide under the North American plate. Heat and pressure from movement 25 miles deep formed Metamorphic rock called Catalina Schist. Over millions of years of uplift and erosion, this Catalina Schist rose near the surface of the earth. About 16 million years ago sea beds were deposited on top of this Catalina Schist. These sea beds continued to be deposited for about 2 million more years. These beds, now over 1,000 feet thick, are called the Altamira shale or Palos Verdes Stone. As layers of this Altamira were being deposited, volcanic basalt was being injected into these beds below the sea floor. These are called basaltic dikes. In some spots the basalt would break through the sea floor into the cold ocean forming pillow basalt. These can be seen in the Livingston Quarry (located in the Forestal Nature Preserve). Because of movements in the San Andreas Fault, all this activity 14 to 16 million years ago actually took place in deep water off Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Altamira Shale or Palos Verdes Stone was formed during the Miocene epoch. Life in the Miocene seas of Palos Verdes was much like life today in the Catalina channel, deep water 3,000 feet deep and having rivers flowing into it. Fossil fish, fish scales and whale bones are commonly found on the Peninsula, and many are from the families still living in the Pacific today. A few exceptions would be the fact that Miocene whales were much smaller than the ones living today. Specimens 20 feet long would be the maximum size for a fossil whale in Palos Verdes. Sharks on the other hand evolved in the other direction. The giant Mako on display at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center could reach 20 feet in length (modern Mako sharks reach up to 13 feet). The top predator of the Miocene seas was the 50-foot long Megalodon shark. A tooth from this monster was found at Pelican Cove below the Point Vicente Lighthouse and was nearly six inches long. Today most of the rocks found on the Palos Verdes hills are from the Altamira shale. Because of the color and beauty of these rocks, they were commercially mined under the name of “Palos Verdes Stone”. Local decorative walls, patios and even the exterior walls of the Point Vicente Interpretive Center are covered with Palos Verdes Stone.

After the Miocene beds were formed 14 to 16 million years ago, nothing geologically speaking happened until about 1 million years ago. At this time because of pressures forming beneath the earth’s crust, these sea beds began to push up. The Catalina Schist covered with the Altamira Shale was pushed up through the ocean, breaking the surface and forming a small island. As Palos Verdes Island continued to rise out of the sea, it formed sea cliffs around its perimeter. Today these old sea cliffs or marine terraces can be seen on the hillsides. Thirteen of these Pleistocene epoch marine terraces were formed over thousands of years. At the base of these ancient sea cliffs in some areas you can find fossil seashells and the remains of tide pools. Most of these fossil shells are the same species as the ones found in our local tide pools today.

Point Vicente Interpretive Center, PV Stone facade Joe Cocke lives in Palos Verdes and has collected fossils from the time he was a young boy. He retired from the Museum of Natural History of Los Angeles after thirty-three years of service. During that time, Joe worked in the department of Vertebrate Paleontology, Education and Animal Habitats. He still roams the hills and canyons in search of fossils. His book, Fossils of the Palos Verdes Hills can be found at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center gift shop.

Terranea thrives on collaboration and a vibrant workplace culture, where associates are passionate about creating extraordinary memories and meaningful connections for guests and the local community. Nestled on 102 scenic acres along the Peninsula, Terranea Resort offers exceptional moments for both visitors and residents of Palos Verdes. Beyond its premier setting, the resort boasts amenities like a ninehole par-3 golf course, an award-winning oceanfront spa, four pools, diverse dining options, sea adventures, and more. At the heart of Terranea’s exemplary experiences are meaningful connections and personalized service, created by the dedicated, talented, and happy team. President Ralph Grippo believes in the importance of loving what you do, where you do it, and with whom you do it, turning work into a passion. As a good neighbor for over fourteen years, Terranea welcomes the Peninsula community, considering the resort a shared space for all, and truly a home away from home for employees and guests alike.

“ I believe that if our associates feel valued, their work will show it in going the extra mile to ensure guests feel well-cared for. My job is to take care of our people first. And I firmly believe we’re in it together.” Ralph Grippo

Jim York, Owner of Catalina View Wines and Nick Zetts, Farm Manager

Well known for its majestic cliffs and unrivaled ocean views, the Palos Verdes Peninsula also features secret hidden gems. Boasting one of the most talked about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir crops in this area, the federal government recently approved the Palos Verdes Peninsula American Viticultural Area (AVA) as one of the country’s newest wine-growing regions. In 2021 Palos Verdes became only the second AVA in Los Angeles County and the 142 in the state of California. Catalina View Farms produced their first harvest in 2016 producing more than 650 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Continuing to consistently produce between 600 and 700 cases annually and adding a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reserve to their offerings the local vineyard is able to sell exclusively to local restaurants and markets in the South Bay area. The wine is also used at events held at Catalina View Gardens, an outdoor event space, garden, and vineyard. The sprawling property is located across the street from Terranea. Five acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes cover the south-facing hillside, which was planted as far as the eyes can see in 2013. Catalina View Gardens Owner Vinter Jim York believes PV’s cool foggy mornings and warm sunny afternoons bring sweet success to his vineyard. The grapes are grown on the Peninsula. Catalina View Gardens wine is produced in Buellton, California, and sold exclusively in the South Bay.

Visit the

marine mammal care center Written by Melani Morose Edelstein | Photos by Erik Jay

The coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the waters of the Pacific Ocean offer a wild and wondrous home to many living things. Just south of Terranea the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) in San Pedro is making a positive impact on the ocean and inspiring others to do the same. A handful of amazing veterinary professionals along with an army of volunteers offer what is the only safe haven for marine animals in Los Angeles County. The MMCC rescues distressed marine mammals along the coast between Long Beach and Malibu and works to reintroduce them to the ocean. According to John Warner, CEO of MMCC, thousands of marine mammals have received food, shelter, and medical care in the nonprofit organization’s 32-year history. The MMCC at Fort Macarthur opened in 1992 after the 1987 closure of Marineland of the Pacific’s Marine Mammal Care Center. Operating as a link between the ocean and researchers, the MMCC also participates in various research programs and projects. The dedicated team of staff and volunteers, led by Warner, is committed to promoting awareness about the fragile ocean ecosystem. In the summer months of 2023 a toxic algae bloom off the coast killed and sickened dozens of sea lions, seals and dolphins across Southern California and the team at MMCC is working continuously to rehabilitate them. Veterinarians say there is no antidote to the toxic algae which causes severe dehydration, so the team primarily tries to rehydrate these precious marine mammals giving them the love, time and space they need before returning to their natural habitat. When the elephant seal pups became sick and began washing ashore in droves. MMCC volunteers quickly stepped in and began the labor and time intensive project of “mothering” the pups and teaching them to eat fish. CEO Warner explains that the babies were malnourished and emaciated because without their mothers they don’t have the ability to forage for food. For the most part they have no other health problems so volunteers spend hours feeding the pups fish and teaching them to hunt for food so they can be returned to their ocean habitat.

Visitors never know what they will see when they get to the Marine Mammal Care Center but the animals are sure to delight. Everyone is welcome to stop by the MMCC to see the animals between 10am and 4pm daily. Admission is free, donations are appreciated. The Marine Mammal Care Center primarily treats California Sea Lions, Northern Elephant Seals, Harbor Seals, and Northern Fur Seals but you never know what you will see on any given day so check it out.
