First, let’s talk about the talented Jenny Barker, also known as The Flower doctor. Jenny’s creativity and artistry have brightened so many occasions, and I’m lucky enough to have experienced her magic firsthand. When my dear friends hosted a birthday dinner for me in valmonte, I realized I needed the perfect hostess gift. Immediately, I thought back to the story we had recently done about Jenny. I decided to stop by her shop and see her work up close—and I’m so glad I did! Magical Blooms promptly created two stunning spring bouquets that were as thoughtful as they were gorgeous. It was the perfect touch for a special evening. In this issue, we’re so excited to showcase Jenny’s colorful lifestyle and her remarkable business that’s blooming right here in our community. and now, a bit of a mystery unveiled! In a flower-filled boutique nestled along pacific coast Highway, a local legend continues to bloom. Jenny Barker, known lovingly as The Flower doctor, has been crafting emotional, unforgettable floral experiences for over 30 years — and now, she’s adding a new kind of healing to her repertoire: tea.
This May, as we celebrate Mother’s day and honor the nurturers in our lives, it feels only fitting to spotlight a woman who has turned nurturing into an art form. Jenny doesn’t just sell flowers; she prescribes them.
“I believe flowers are medicine,” she says with a smile. “They heal, uplift, and connect. That’s why I call them Flower prescriptions.”
In the heart of the South Bay, where she has served generations through birthdays, weddings, baby showers, and moments of loss, Jenny’s work has become something sacred. Her shop, Magical Blooms, is more than a boutique — it’s a sanctuary of beauty, emotion, and now, a home for her newest venture: high tea.
Walking into Magical Blooms feels like stepping into Jenny’s home away from home. The space is infused with warmth, comfort, and a welcoming spirit that instantly makes you feel like family. every floral design is created fresh on the spot — nothing is pre-made — ensuring each arrangement is one-ofa-kind. as a farm-based flower shop, Jenny’s flowers last longer, bursting with vibrant energy, fragrance, and soul.
Jenny’s journey began humbly. at just 19 years old, she opened Magical Blooms with $500 and a dream. Today, she’s a single mother, a nationally recognized floral artist (you may recognize her from HBO’s Full Bloom), and the creative force behind some of Southern california’s most breathtaking events. Through it all, she credits the palos verdes community for her growth.
“This community is my heart,” she shares. “So many of my customers have become like family. I’ve done the flowers for their weddings, their children’s births, and even their farewells. It’s the deepest honor.”
Her son, Jack Barker, has grown up among blooms, watching his mother transform grief into beauty and ordinary days into celebrations. now 13, Jack attends pvIS (palos verdes Intermediate School) and proudly helps out at the shop whenever he can. “He’s my why,” Jenny says. “and he’s also my helper!”
Beyond flowers, Jenny’s passion lies in bringing people together through team-building and helping them build confidence. Whether through corporate workshops, creative classes, or intimate gatherings, she believes in the magic that happens when people create beauty together.

lavae Mcclinnahan’s journey to Montauk began long before he arrived in redondo Beach. raised in a military family, he lived across the country, developing resilience and a global perspective that would later shape both his personal life and business ventures. his mother, a high-ranking army veteran, instilled in him qualities like discipline and adaptability, which continue to serve him well as an entrepreneur. Though originally from Washington, d c., lavae’s love for coastal living led him to the South Bay more than 15 years ago. residing in rancho palos verdes, he was drawn by the area’s sweeping coastal views, peaceful atmosphere, and sense of spaciousness—luxuries rarely found in Southern california. But what truly anchored him here was the supportive, vibrant community, which inspired him to slow down, connect, and appreciate life. his weekends reflect the peninsula’s fulfilling lifestyle—morning walks along trails, exploring local hidden gems like the Great american Seafood Market and pho hana, and spinning jazz vinyl at home. a former dJ, lavae still brings his creative passion to private events, keeping alive a love for music that started during his days on the Interscope records street team.

Subtle nods to Montauk’s heritage and Indigenous culture are woven into the design through elements like brown leathers, warm lighting, and linenshaded lamps, giving the space a timeless, grounded feel.
“We didn’t just want it to look good—we wanted it to feel good,” lavae shares. “From the greeting to the presentation of food and wine, every touchpoint is designed to make guests feel at home.” notable features include luxury materials like navy corduroy wallpaper by philip Jeffries, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also improves acoustics, creating a serene and comfortable dining experience. custom beadboard sourced from north carolina and strategic soundproofing further elevate the sensory journey.
The space itself underwent a complete renovation, stripping away years of past layers to build something fresh and purposeful. love On 4 paws began with one mother’s visit to her daughter’s special education facility—and the surprising comfort her dogs brought to the children there. now a nonprofit with over 60 volunteer teams, the organization provides animal-assisted therapy across los angeles and Orange county, including right here on the peninsula. In this Q&a , love On 4 paws shares how it began, the services it offers, and how the community can get involved.
How did your organization form?
In 1990, Sharlene lauretz began taking her dogs to visit a special education facility where her daughter was enrolled. She was amazed so many children responded to the dogs. She recruited other people and their dogs to participate in animal-assisted therapy sessions. In 1997 love On 4 paws, Inc. was formed as a 501(c)(3) california non-profit corporation. Today, about 60 volunteer teams visit 50 or more facilities and special events in the greater los angeles area and Orange county.
What is your connection to the Peninsula?
love On 4 paws has deep roots in the peninsula, where we have been making a positive impact on our community for nearly three decades. Our director Suni cookson lives in rancho palos verdes, and many of our volunteers hail from the peninsula as well. In addition, we have participated in local community events such as the palos verdes Street Fair to raise awareness of our organization and give cuddles and hugs to fairgoers.
What service does your organization provide and how does it benefit the community?
The mission of love On 4 paws is to share the joy, comfort, and healing power of our pets’ unconditional love with people in need. Our emphasis is visiting with adults and special-needs children in hospitals, schools and assisted living facilities, and we participate in community events. recently, we also sent our therapy pets out to comfort firstresponders and victims of the la Wildfires. positive interaction with an animal-assisted therapy pet has many mental and physiological health benefits. These include lowered heart rate and blood pressure, reduced stress and anxiety, pain relief, increase in mood-boosting endorphins like cortisol, comfort to the lonely and encouraging exercise.
When visiting the hospitals, our volunteers take a special instant-camera picture of their therapy pet with patients and staff, leaving behind a personalized memento of their visit.
Tell us about the dogs in your program. The dogs and cats in our program live at home with their human handlers all over los angeles and Orange county. Their owners train them, care for them, and take them on hospital or other facility visits at least three times per month. love On 4 paws is one of the few animal-assisted therapy organizations that will take any breed and any size of dog. Our website features photos and bios of all our therapy pets; many of them have amazing stories!
How can the community get involved in your mission?
love On 4 paws is always looking for new volunteer teams! If interested, you can visit the website for more information and to fill out an interest form. Temperament and sociability are the most important factors for a therapy animal. Celebrating 25 Years of Inspiring Young Minds
For 25 years, The Art Box Academy has sparked imagination and confidence in children throughout Southern California and beyond. Founded by Lauren Dennis-Perelmuter in 2000, the Academy began as a single art center, called Art To Grow On Children’s Art Center, and has grown into a nationally recognized program, combining handson classes with creative art kits shipped across the country. Lauren’s creative journey began in the Bay Area, where she worked as a textile designer and in executive management for high-end designer stores. These experiences instilled in her a deep appreciation for the power of daily creativity and a desire to share it with future generations. Upon returning to Los Angeles in 2000, she recognized a need for a space dedicated to nurturing children’s artistic expression, and the concept was born.
Starting with a storefront location, Lauren quickly realized the impact could be even greater by bringing programs directly into schools. That spirit of innovation continues today, with the Academy offering both on-site classes and nationwide Art Kit programs.
At its heart, The Art Box Academy stands for “Creative Wellness” empowering kids to build critical thinking, fine motor skills, resilience, and joy through the arts. We sat down with Lauren to reflect on this remarkable journey.
Q: What do you remember most about the early days of The Art Box Academy?
A big “aha” moment for me was realizing the importance of staying flexible and listening to the needs of the community. When we first opened, we were a small storefront operation, but as the schools began reaching out, I saw an opportunity to expand our programs and bring art into more classrooms.
Q: How has The Art Box Academy evolved over the years?
The evolution has been incredible. Initially, we were all about in-person classes at our storefront, then we pivoted to offer mobile programs at schools. During the pandemic, we responded by creating Art Kits and Activity Boxes, which allowed us to continue reaching children at home. Over the past few years, we’ve combined the best of both worlds continuing on-site teaching and shipping Art Kits nationwide.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of seeing students grow through art? Seeing kids gain confidence and discover their own creativity is the most fulfilling part. I’m also constantly inspired when I hear from past students about how the Academy influenced their lives in positive ways many of them continue to pursue creative paths in college or in their careers.
Q: What role has the Palos Verdes community played in your journey?
The Palos Verdes community has been amazing. From supporting our programs in the local schools to collaborating with businesses like Terranea, State Farm, and Maniaci Insurance, we’ve been able to create lasting relationships that truly make a difference in the lives of families here.
Q: What’s next for The Art Box Academy?
We’re excited to keep growing! We’re expanding our reach by working with pediatric hospitals, resorts, and mental health organizations, and continuing to offer our Art Kits to schools across the country. We hope to bring the power of creativity to even more kids, schools, hospitals, families and more in the years to come.

Peninsula School of Performing Arts Celebrating the Ballet Conservatory Class of 2025
With full hearts and immense pride, pSpa celebrates the graduating senior class of 2025. These five remarkable young dancers — Hannah, Sierra, Mizuki, avery, and elina — have grown up within the walls of the studio, many beginning their journey as young as three years old. From their first plié to leading roles in major productions, they have poured passion and dedication into every rehearsal and performance. each will dance a leading role in pSpa’s upcoming production of don Quixote before embarking on their next chapter.
pSpa is immensely proud of these dancers, not only for their artistic achievements but also for the grace, dedication, and heart they have demonstrated over the years. While this marks the end of a beautiful chapter, it is also the beginning of exciting new adventures. audiences are invited to celebrate these graduates at their final pSpa ballet performance of don Quixote at the norris Theater on May 16, 17, and 18.
PVHS Underwater ROV Team Preparing for Regional Competition
The palos verdes Institute of Technology (pvIT) is an exclusive engineering program at palos verdes High School (pvHS), featuring multiple competitive robotics and engineering teams that offer students hands-on experience.
One of the standout teams is the underwater rOv (remotely Operated vehicle) Team, which has competed at the MaTe regional and World competitions since 2010, earning six top-five finishes. last year, they placed tenth at the 2024 rOv MaTe World championship. On May 3rd, they will compete in the 2025 regionals. This year, over 45 students applied for the team, resulting in two groups: “edmund,” consisting of returning members, and “Fitzgerald,” made up of new members. Both teams are working on their underwater rOvs and accompanying floats. The team is grateful for the support from the pvHS Booster club and peninsula education Foundation.
Rolling Robots Teams Qualify for the 2025 VEX Robotics World Championship
Four outstanding rolling robots teams, including two from rolling Hills estates, have secured their spots at the 2025 veX robotics World championship in dallas, Texas, beginning on May 6, 2025. Their remarkable performances at the veX robotics california region 4 championship highlight their dedication to innovation, teamwork, and engineering excellence.
Team 7700r (rolling Hills estates) won the amaze award, recognizing their robot’s exceptional design, performance, and consistency in competition. Team 7700e (rolling Hills estates) reached the Middle School Semifinals.
Their success is a testament to strategic planning, perseverance, collaboration, and a passion for engineering. The students dedicate countless hours to designing, building, and coding their robots, competing in local and state tournaments to earn their place on the world stage. Many of these students have been long-time members of rolling robots, honing their skills through hands-on learning and competition. There was a total of twenty rolling robots teams participating in the region 4 championship. This year marks their 11th consecutive season attending the veX World championship. attending Worlds is an inspiring experience that motivates students to continue pushing the boundaries of robotics and STeM education in future seasons.

Seven Palos Verdes School District Students Win Prestigious Talent Awards
Six palos verdes peninsula High School students, plus a seventh from palos verdes High, won awards at the prestigious r otary pageant of the a rts, held at n ickelodeon a nimation Studios in Burbank. The event featured over 20 schools from greater los a ngeles and was sponsored by r otary d istrict 5280.
award winners from pvpHS included classical ballet dancer Hannah Sheriff (first place), violinist Kevin Hu (second place), and Taiko drum player rhys Ota (third place). Honorable mentions went to artist veronica chen, vocalist aarna veera, and Korean drum players Jaden Kim and Jaden Song. The competition, with categories for artists, musicians, dancers, vocalists, and speakers, was judged by professionals in each field. pvpHS led the competition with seven winners, followed by el Segundo High with three. The peninsula winners were sponsored by the rotary clubs of palos verdes peninsula, palos verdes Sunset, and South Bay Sunrise.

The exhibition, featuring 82 works by 12 juried artists, continues through May 17. Maria’s Closet 7th Annual Prom Dress Giveawaay
Maria’s closet hosted its 7th annual prom dress Giveaway experience on March 23, 2025, in San pedro, california, where 340 young women had their prom dreams come true. The nonprofit transforms the Mary Star of the Sea High School gymnasium into an unforgettable shopping experience, complete with thousands of gowns, dressing rooms, photo stations, and more. With the support of longtime friend vera Jimenez of KTla5 as guest speaker, participants left feeling beautiful, confident, and empowered—each receiving a gown, accessories, a swag bag, and the opportunity to apply for college scholarships, all at no cost. Serving students from 83 Title 1 schools, 7 Boys & Girls clubs, 9 foster homes, Wclac, and the “I Have a dream” Foundation, Maria’s closet has awarded more than $48,000 in scholarships to date.
Founded by ronna luna, Maria’s closet was built on the belief that circumstance should not define a young woman’s memories. each girl shops alongside a personal stylist volunteer who helps navigate gowns ranging from size 00 to 40, supported by over 250 volunteers during this year’s event, known as the BIG GIve . On March 25, 2025, the team also hosted a special dress Giveaway for young women with disabilities at Willenberg career & Transition center, creating an inclusive and magical experience. PV Juniors Annual Spring Gala
On March 29, 2025, the palos verdes Junior Women’s club celebrated its 67th year of service to the South Bay community with a spectacular Spring Gala held at the Torrance Marriott hotel. The evening, themed Tropical Splendor, brought guests together in elegant black-tie and polynesian-inspired attire for a night of celebration, community, and giving.
The event raised vital funds to support women and children in crisis throughout the South Bay, as well as local student academic programs. attendees enjoyed a vibrant tropical atmosphere, complete with fine dining, dancing, and heartfelt moments recognizing the impactful work of the palos verdes Junior Women’s club and its generous supporters.

PV High State Champion Teams Parade
On april 19, 2025, the streets surrounding palos verdes High School came alive in a sea of red and black as the community gathered to celebrate an extraordinary achievement—the first-ever State champion parade honoring multiple cIF State champion teams in a single school year. palos verdes High School made history in 2024-2025 with championship wins by the Girls varsity volleyball Team, the Girls varsity Tennis Team, and the varsity Football Team. The energy was electric as proud residents lined pv drive to cheer on their champions during this milestone moment for Sea King athletics. councilman craig Quinn and pvHS principal dr. Trista ramirez joined the celebration, leading a community-wide show of pride and spirit for these student-athletes who brought state titles home to the Hill. A Night of Laughter and Giving at the Comedy & Magic
Club
On Wednesday, april 23, 2025, guests gathered at the iconic comedy & Magic club in Hermosa Beach for a sold-out evening filled with laughter, purpose, and generosity. The event featured standout entertainment, a delicious dinner, heartfelt testimonials, and a high-energy live auction—all in support of The children’s center at Harbor Interfaith Services. Funds raised from the evening helped provide children with a safe and supportive place to learn and grow while their parents pursue education or employment on the path to stable housing and financial independence. It was a night to remember, and those who missed it are already looking forward to next year’s event.

This brief statement was carved into a wooden board onto what can be generously called the cornerstone of “Flotsam Castle,” a seaside dwelling built by a down-onhis luck hermit, pie-maker, former lawyer, and part-time philosopher named Louis C. Dart.
Dart built his castle on the rocky bluffs of Malaga Cove near present-day Torrance Beach in the early 1920s. Made entirely of materials salvaged from the ocean, his seaside cabin grew from a crude shelter into a two-story structure that featured a living room, stairs, kitchen, sleeping quarters, basement and an open air pavilion with a lunch counter.
The story of how the mysterious drifter came to the area is as intriguing as his improvised seaside dwelling with a view.
According to Census records, Dart was born in 1859 in Missouri where his father was a farmer. News accounts state that he graduated from an Iowa law college and was a prosperous attorney in western Nebraska and the Midwest before he got sick, lost his voice, and was unable
to plead at the bar. Dart claimed doctors diagnosed him with Bright’s disease (kidney disease) and abandoned him after his money was gone.
Like countless others, Dart migrated west. For fifteen years, he worked as a cook in mining and road camps. The 1910 federal Census places Dart in Oakland where he was a lodger and listed his occupation as inventor. Still struggling physically, he couldn’t work for more than a few weeks at a time.
Dart eventually moved to southern California and made his way to the Palos Verdes area, drifting and convalescing in the open air between Portuguese Bend and Malaga Cove for about seven years. Still weak, he was unable to scramble up the hills to fetch drinking water.
This is where the story gets interesting.
With no money and struggling in poor health, his one remaining ambition was to die alone in the desolate cove. But Dart’s luck would quickly change. He met an old Spanish lady who was looking for clams and worked on the Palos Verdes ranch. She advised him to seek out a spring at Malaga Cove with water that would cure his ailments. Even though Dart had lived in this area for years he had never before stumbled upon this “fountain of health.”

July 15, 1923, Flotsam Castle
The “driftwood domicile” was said to have been built at the expense of about 20 cents (to cover the cost of nails). It had to be reconstructed several times; the first version resembling a “peasant‘s precipice-hung hut“ before it developed into a landmark over two stories tall. A large gray cat and a beady-eyed black-nosed guinea pig were Dart’s roommates.
For six weeks, Dart lived without food or shelter, and drank only water from this spring. As he grew stronger, he climbed the bluff, ate tomatoes at the top and also scooped snails from the rocks for a snail-broth. Soon he was physically “sound from head to toe.” He boasted that he had gone back in age from 65 to 45 and was “so tough and hard that if a mule were to kick him he would not know it except by change of location.” Exact dates are unknown, but this was likely in late 1919.
Around this time, a 45-foot yacht named the Genevieve anchored in the kelp beds nearby broke from its moorings and wrecked near Malaga Cove. Dart was paid $5 to guard the wreckage overnight. “Then I began to eat!” Dart exclaimed, pleased that he was able to expand his scavenger diet. He also assisted in retrieving the contents of the vessel and was allowed to keep many articles from the boat, earning $85 from salvage.
The return of his physical strength along with the “jingling of coins in his pockets” motivated Dart to build his castle made of the abundant driftwood nearby and other items that “Neptune’s white horses” laid at his steps. Not surprisingly, Dart constructed it right near the spring.
In short order, his “seaside castle” drew thousands of visitors from almost every state in the nation and from cities worldwide. They sat at cable-spool tables, guzzled soda pop and dined on homemade pies made by Dart on the castle’s little four-burner stove. Dart baked about 8000 pies (and admitted to eating about 500 of these himself). Artists loved his shelter and begged him not to tear it down. The Boy Scouts visited.
Louis Dart became a minor celebrity. In the roaring 1920s he and his castle were profiled in Popular Mechanics, the Los Angeles Times and newspapers across the nation -- and in countries such as Australia and New Zealand.
When not building his castle or baking pies for his many guests, Dart engaged in the more cerebral pursuit of philosophy. No doubt remembering his earlier struggles, he opined: “Until you learn the difference between your needs and your wants, and are more anxious to have a sound body and a clear brain than to indulge your perverted taste, anything I might tell you would be in vain.”
News accounts indicate that Dart had abandoned his driftwood mansion as early as 1925. He was definitely gone by May 1930, when a reporter ventured to Flotsam Castle and confirmed that Dart had left the area for good. The castle was still standing but seemed “like a body which had lost its soul.” Shortly thereafter the owner of a nearby fashionable subdivision torched Flotsam Castle and burned it to the ground within 60 minutes.
After he left the Malaga Cove area, Dart moved to Arlington, near Riverside, where he built a “quaint little abode on a hill” from pieces of wood he had scavenged. He left this home after thieves had continually robbed the place while he was away.
Dart then moved to Riverside where he lived in a rooming house and received aid from the county welfare department. He had reportedly refused help from his friends to try and contact his family in Idaho for help, and died on March 3, 1932.
Although his castle was destroyed, Louis Dart’s legacy and philosophy lives on. In one of his pamphlets the hermit philosopher of Malaga Cove left us with this: “The real purpose of our being is to add to the sum of human happiness. Success and contentment come not from what you get, but from what you give.”
