by Mark Pfeil As I stand at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on its 100th Anniversary, I am flooded with memories and a deep sense of gratitude. This Club has been more than just a place to play golf; it’s been a cornerstone of my life and the backdrop to countless cherished moments.

Beginning as a young junior golfer, I grew up spending hours playing and practicing on this Course. The architecture includes undulating rolling hills, narrow fairways, uneven lies, and small greens. This helped equip my golf game to compete on difficult courses. Palos Verdes Golf Club was my sanctuary. I was fortunate to have a gem of a golf course in my backyard. Golf became my passion and created my profession.

Palos Verdes Golf Club is where I pursued my dream of playing professional golf. I found a life-long friend, mentor, and golf instructor, Bud Oakley.

It was here that my accomplishments were realized. My connection to Palos Verdes Golf Club is not only about the game of golf, but also about community and the sense of belonging. The Club is where friends and family gather to celebrate joyous occasions and friendships.

Today, as a grandfather, I take immense joy in sharing this Course with my grandchildren. Palos Verdes Golf Club continues to be a place where love for the game of golf is passed down through generations, as it was to me by my parents.

Reflecting on my journey from a young golfer at Palos Verdes Golf Club to a PGA Tour Professional, I realize how instrumental this Club has been in shaping my career and my life. The lessons learned, the friendships made, and the memories created here are invaluable.

My wish for beautiful Palos Verdes Golf Club is for another 100 years of great golf and great friends.

P r es i d ent ’ s mess ag e As we gather to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Palos Verdes Golf Club, it is with great pride that we reflect on our remarkable journey. Over the past century, this Club has grown into far more than just a place to play golf.

From the beginning, Palos Verdes Golf Club was envisioned as a community golf club, a place where Members, their families, and friends could come together, build relationships, and share in the love of the game. These ties extend well beyond the fairways, creating a special atmosphere that is felt at every gathering, from club tournaments and social events to evenings spent together in the Clubhouse. The warmth and sense of belonging here are defining qualities of our Club and this sense of community has been our most enduring legacy.

What truly sets PVGC apart is the way we welcome everyone—whether seasoned golfers, young families new to the game, or lifelong Members who have seen the Club evolve. We take pride in the diversity of our Membership and in how we embrace the many backgrounds and experiences that contribute to this vibrant and supportive place.

As we celebrate this milestone, it’s also important to recognize the vital partnership we share with the City of Palos Verdes Estates and its City Council. The City Council’s ongoing support has been instrumental in helping the Club thrive, allowing us to uphold our values and maintain our exceptional facilities. This strong, collaborative relationship has fostered a shared vision of preserving the natural beauty and recreational spirit of PVGC, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment. Together, we have created an environment where our Members can enjoy the game of golf while appreciating the stunning surroundings and rich history of this area.

The spirit of generosity here also extends beyond our Club’s walls. We have long believed in the importance of giving back to the broader community, supporting organizations like Torrance Memorial Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles through the Seahorse Classic, the Boys & Girls Club, and the Richstone Family Center. Through these partnerships, we aim to make a meaningful difference and to uphold our tradition of service.

We are equally proud of the Palos Verdes Golf Club Scholarship Foundation, which has provided over $2.2 million to help our Staff and their children pursue their educational and professional goals. The Foundation reflects our commitment to those who work hard to make this Club a wonderful place, empowering them to succeed in fulfilling ways.

In addition to our charitable efforts, our Club has also dedicated itself to giving back to the game of golf. We are proud to host the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, one of the premier events in women’s collegiate golf. This prestigious tournament has become known for drawing one of the most competitive fields in the sport, showcasing top-tier talent and celebrating the future of golf. By hosting this event, we are playing a part in fostering the growth of the game and supporting the next generation of athletes.

This Centennial Celebration not only commemorates 100 years of history but also honors the many Members, staff, and friends who have contributed to the Club’s legacy. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have helped make Palos Verdes Golf Club what it is today.

Your dedication and passion are why we can celebrate this incredible milestone together. Here’s to another century of friendship and golf.

P r eserv i n g Tradi t ion , E mb r ac in g th e Future As Palos Verdes Golf Club embarks on its centennial milestone, the rich heritage of the Club and its grounds stands as a testament to nearly a century of excellence and community. It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the Club’s third General Manager in this historic year with so much to look forward to as we embark on the next 100 years. Since its opening on November 15, 1924, the Club has offered more than just a prestigious golf course— it’s provided a timeless experience for Members and guests alike.

Known as a “hidden gem” of Southern California, Palos Verdes Golf Club combines a classic golf course design with a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, making it truly unique among the region’s golf venues.

PVGC has a bit of a Pebble Beach vibe with its scenic ocean views, mixed with the grandeur of large Eucalyptus trees and wild oaks that you might find at a nearby Billy Bell and George C. Thomas influenced design, during the Golden Age of Golf in America. The small Poa annua and creeping bentgrass greens protect the Course from low scores and provide an adrenaline rush with their fast, firm and undulating structure. The Kikuyu fairways and roughs provide further challenge as the golf experience takes you on a majestic journey over sweeping terrain, crossing wooden bridges and cavernous barrancas, with ocean views as far as the eye can see. PV, as it is widely admired, has great respect and admiration amongst its peer clubs, SoCal, the Membership, residents, and the guests who walk these beloved grounds.

The historic Spanish Mediterranean inspired Clubhouse, built alongside landmarks like Malaga Cove Plaza and La Venta Inn, remains the heart of this vibrant community. Designated a Historical Building by the Palos Verdes Historical Society, it has undergone thoughtful restorations, including a significant expansion in 2004 and a dining venue renovation in 2021 honoring its Mediterranean roots, while adapting to modern needs. With the addition of the Palos Verdes Ballroom, Lunada Bay Room, Oakley’s and The Cove, the Clubhouse effortlessly blends tradition with contemporary functionality, offering sweeping views from Redondo Beach to Malibu. These enhancements ensure that the Clubhouse remains both a cherished historical site and a premier destination for Members and the broader community.

Looking forward, the Clubhouse’s continued enhancement is crucial to preserving its historical integrity while ensuring it meets modern expectations. Plans include the recently approved Centennial Project, which began with driving range and short game area projects focused on new grassing, bunkers and irrigation.

Phase II of the Centennial Project intends to provide Clubhouse enhancements with expanded fitness facilities, office spaces, meeting rooms, storage and a flex space for fitness and kids programming. Additionally, the existing Pro Shop, Bag Storage, Snack Bar and locker rooms will be upgraded to deliver a premier Member experience. These upgrades will reflect the quality of the Golf Course and create a more inviting space for Members to gather, dine, and enjoy the “Palos Verdes Experience” that has been cherished for generations.

The reimagined spaces will not only enhance the Club’s rich legacy, but also ensure it meets the needs of future generations.

The Members and long tenured Staff are warm and welcoming and share a great sense of pride for their South Bay community on the Hill. They enjoy all the PVGC has to offer and are abundantly active in their pursuit of sport, dining, events and entertainment. I am thankful to be a part of this journey, leading the PVGC Team into the next 100 years in collaboration with the Board of Directors, Club Committees, our endearing Membership, and a long tenured Staff.

introduction The history of Palos Verdes Golf Club is a captivating tale, as vibrant and distinctive as the Course itself. Nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, few courses worldwide boast such a magnificent setting, characterized by its natural splendor, ideal conditions, and temperate climate. The majestic Course features ocean views from fourteen of the eighteen holes. Yet, beneath the picturesque exterior lies a history fraught with challenges and triumphs, spanning one hundred years.

The Club opened on November 15, 1924, marking the beginning of its legacy. Designed and built by William P. “Billy” Bell, who worked directly with George C. Thomas Jr., Palos Verdes Golf Club is a classic example of the “Golden Age” of golf course design. Designed to harmonize with the Peninsula’s natural topography, the Course is a masterpiece of integration, where barrancas, creeks, and hills seamlessly merge with fairways and greens.

The front nine, famously known as the “perfect nine,” presents a unique challenge with no consecutive holes sharing the same par.

Stretching 6,500 yards and situated in the heart of an 800-acre parkland, the Course is not defined by its length but by its strategic design. Narrow fairways, small greens, and extensive bunkering demand precision over power, while ocean breezes and stunning vistas add to the allure of the experience.

The Club’s journey has defied the odds time and again, overcoming challenges that included the Great Depression, World War II, a deed forfeiture, and the potential sale of a lease that could have yielded a substantial amount of money to its holder. Despite these hurdles, the Club remains a testament to the unwavering dedication of countless individuals. Many attribute the Club’s survival to the thoughtful and dedicated Members throughout the years who remained committed to making the Club what it is today.

Within the pages that follow, snapshots of the Club’s history, from hardship and perseverance to camaraderie and triumph, offer but a glimpse into the experiences shared on the fairways and in the Clubhouse.

Yet the most exciting part was that this gorgeous scene was not a piece of Italy at all but was in America, an unspoiled sheet of paper to be written on with loving care.

Best of the Best To bring this vision to life, Vanderlip sought out the finest minds of the time. He had access to the best architects, planners, and resources available, ensuring that his vision would be executed. Starting in early 1914, Vanderlip hired prominent architects Myron Hunt of Los Angeles and Edward Shaw, along with the renowned landscape architects, the Olmsted Brothers ( John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., sons of Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., who designed Central Park in New York City and the U.S. Capitol Grounds). The Olmsted Brothers were tasked with creating plans for the development of the land. They arranged for surveyors and geologists to assess the area.

Vanderlip, along with his Palos Verdes Syndicate, also commissioned meteorologist Ford Ashman Carpenter to install weather stations throughout the Peninsula. These stations recorded data on temperatures, relative humidity, wind velocity, and sunshine from 1914 to 1920. The data collected was used by the Syndicate and developers to determine the most suitable areas for building sites, reservoirs, and roads. Carpenter’s work represents one of the first known practical applications of meteorological data for land development.

No place in all the country is there a region so ideally located as the beautiful tract of land known as the Rancho Los Palos Verdes.

Construction Begins The subdivision of the land and the construction of the first Spanish-style homes in present-day Palos Verdes Estates began in the early 1920s. Deed restrictions were established in 1923 when the Bank of America, as trustee for Vanderlip’s Palos Verdes Project, recorded a trust indenture, new restrictions setting out a detailed zoning and development plan for over 4000 parcels of real estate for what today constitutes Palos Verdes Estates. On May 24, 1923, the Palos Verdes Homes Association was created as a California corporation to perform the services normally provided by a city. The PVHA was to govern the unincorporated area. It was to be the owner of all parkland and it also included members who held title to property in Palos Verdes Estates, with voting rights corresponding to their property holdings. The Community was planned as a whole, anticipating growth and assuring that architectural integrity and building aesthetics would be maintained in perpetuity. The CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions) were created and an architectural committee was formed, which became known as the Art Jury. The City Planner for the Palos Verdes Project was the renowned Charles H. Cheney, who wrote the basic restrictions, assisted by Walter Swindell Davis. Together with the Olmsted Brothers, Cheney laid out the Palos Verdes Estates area, including plans for streets with wide planting strips, zoning for businesses, single-family residences and apartments, central business plans, church locations, parks, playgrounds, school sites, and open spaces.

The creation of the Palos Verdes Homes Association involved deeding 800 acres, including 213 acres that now make up the Palos Verdes Golf Club, to be dedicated to public uses. The Golf Course was constructed to attract buyers of 1923, Palos Verdes Project promotional ad

residential lots, and Palos Verdes Golf Club, along with La Venta Inn, stand . as two of the oldest buildings in Palos Verdes Estates. Approximately 2000 . parcels were sold between 1924 to 1939; with the developer actively marketing the remaining 2400.

Myron Hunt was President of the Art Jury for seventeen years. A distinctive California architectural style emerged in Palos Verdes, characterized by stucco and adobe, light colors, and tiled roofs. Hunt himself contributed to this style by designing the iconic Malaga Cove Library as well as many other iconic buildings around the country.

Promoting the Vision Once the Golf Course was roughed in, a major advertising and public relations campaign was launched, promoting lot sales daily in Los Angeles area newspapers as well as in national newspapers and magazines. By September 1923, the development cost was advertised at $60,000, and by April 1924, it was promoted as a $450,000 championship-length Golf Course with a $40,000 Clubhouse. The project, aimed at attracting buyers of residential lots, gained widespread national coverage.

The Golden Age of Golf Course Design In 1923, the Palos Verdes Project embarked on a journey to transform 213 acres of an 800-acre parkland into a magnificent golf course. The Project hired William Park “Billy” Bell, a revered figure in the golfing world. Bell gained his renown for his collaboration with George C. Thomas, who had already left an indelible mark on the landscape of Los Angeles with iconic courses such as Bel-Air and Riviera Country Clubs. His portfolio also included the redesign of the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club. However, Bell’s prowess extended far beyond collaborations, as evidenced by his solo endeavors, numbering over 100 golf courses crafted between the 1920s and the early 1950s.

What distinguishes the Palos Verdes Golf Course is its adherence to the natural terrain. In an era before the widespread use of heavy machinery, Bell and his team relied on mules and drag lines to shape the landscape. This commitment to working with the land remains a hallmark of the Course’s design. At a modest 6,500 yards with a par of 71, Palos Verdes Golf Course still stands as a testament to the brilliance of its creators one hundred years later.

Bell and Thomas crafted a course that seamlessly integrated with the natural topography of the Peninsula. Holes were strategically placed around existing barrancas, creeks, hills, and trees, enhancing both the aesthetic and strategic elements of the Course. The front nine, often lauded as a “perfect nine”—with no two consecutive holes sharing the same par—presents a unique challenge showcasing Bell’s creativity.

The Clubhouse The Clubhouse, as designed by architect C.E. Howard, was a testament to thoughtful planning for its simplicity and functionality. The dining area, labeled as the “Lounge” on the original plans and now the current foyer, featured a wood-burning fireplace and French doors leading to a loggia overlooking the golf course and a stone patio. Adjacent to this space was the kitchen.

On the main floor, the Ladies’ and Men’s Locker Rooms took precedence, occupying most of the area and accessible via a central hall branching from the Lounge towards the east. Meanwhile, in the basement, the office designated for the golf instructor boasted a brick hearth and an adjoining golf shop, aligning with the original blueprints.

1924, The Club Officially Opens On November 15, 1924, the Palos Verdes Golf Course officially opened. The inaugural players were members of the Newspaper Men’s Golf Association of Los Angeles, who hosted their weekly tournament at the new club on November 6, 1924. Scotty Chisholm, Golf Editor of the L.A. Evening Express and an announcer for the Los Angeles Open at Riviera Country Club, posted the first official . score of 92.

Both before and after the Club’s opening, lot sales were promoted through local and national ads, highlighting that each lot included a membership to the “beautiful Palos Verdes Golf Course and Club” with reduced green fees.

Clubhouse Expansion and Community Success The Clubhouse and its Men’s Grill experienced instant success. Merely . three days after the grand opening of the $170,000 Clubhouse, the Palos Verdes Homes Association recognized the overwhelming response and agreed to extend the building eastward by sixty feet. This expansion facilitated the addition of a new Golf Shop and Caddy House. To accommodate the popularity of the Clubhouse and Course, the Men’s Grill relocated to the original Golf Shop, which then transformed into the Ladies’ Grill. Further enhancements included the addition of a Ladies’ Sun Porch on the west end of the building.

The Clubhouse became a popular gathering place, from the day it opened until the onset of the Great Depression. Invitational golf tournaments held . in the early days at Palos Verdes Golf Club were aimed at producing lot . sales and future homeowners to the Peninsula. Early Leadership Jim Fiske, the first Golf Pro at the Course, played a key role in establishing the Palos Verdes Golf Team and organizing popular events, including the wildly successful “Sunday Sweepstakes” in 1925. In October 1929, the Clubhouse welcomed Carl F. Ester as its new Manager. Ester had recently helped launch La Quinta near Palm Springs, and according to the Palos Verdes Bulletin, he was a man of “European training,” having spent three years with the Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt-am-Main and later with the North.

German Lloyd. Upon coming to the U.S., he served as the maître d’hôtel of the Grunewald Hotel in New Orleans for four years and spent twelve years in the hotel, dining car, and restaurant departments of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads.

In addition to managing the Golf Shop, he oversaw the Course’s Caddy Team, remarking that “seventy-five or more wild youngsters can be . a handful.”

Early Tournaments & Course Expansion The early golf tournaments at the Palos Verdes Golf Course were not just sporting events; they were strategic efforts to attract prospective buyers and residents to the community.

These tournaments were made even more appealing by the participation of celebrities and socialites who came to the Course for both competitive and social activities.

The First Invitational Golf Tournament took place on January 27, 1925, and was well received, paving the way for many more events, including the 1928 $2,500 Palos Verdes Open. By the late 1920s, the Course was hosting various tournaments and match play, including the 1928 Palos Verdes Open. For this exciting event, the back tees were used, and the Course was lengthened.

With a gallery that included Hollywood’s biggest star, Douglas Fairbanks, the $2,500 Palos Verdes Open purse was comparable to or exceeding purses at more established courses nationwide.

This attracted some of the top golfers of the era.These early tournaments established the Palos Verdes Golf Course as a leading golf destination.

PVWGC In 1926, women embraced the new golf course in Palos Verdes. State Champion Kathleen Wright set a new Women’s Course Record of 80. Enthusiasm grew, and in 1927, about 25 women formed the original Women’s Club. Emilie Paul, a pioneering spirit, served as the First Team Captain. The Inaugural Women’s Golf Tournament took place on March 1, 1927, setting the foundation for a rich tradition.

Club Members shared passions beyond golf, enjoying horseback riding, bridge, and building a strong sense of community both on and off the course.

For over a decade, the Club was a vibrant presence locally and throughout Southern California. However, after a decade of steady growth, the Club disbanded only because of World War II. It would be reorganized in the late 1940s and continue to the present day as the Palos Verdes Women’s Golf Club (PVWGC).

In the early days of the original Women’s Club, Emilie Paul was the first Team Golf Captain. Being a prolific artist and poet, she created amusing narratives and sketches for the Community Bulletin Board to highlight important information and updates on upcoming events.

Reorganization Prior to 1930, the Palos Verdes Golf Course was operated by the Palos Verdes Homes Association, purposed as part of the 213 acres of golf course created by the Palos Verdes Project for land and homeowner use.

The management of the Club was a committee appointed by the Board of Directors of the Homes Association, with the Park Department having general oversight.

In January of 1930, the PVHA established a Board of Governors to oversee the Club, with Jay Lawyer serving as its inaugural President. This governing body reported to the Directors of the Palos Verdes Homes Association, establishing a club. Some of the early committees included: Greens Committee, Tournament Committee, Handicap Committee, House Committee, Entertainment Committee, Women’s Activities, and Membership Committee. This would only last about a year.

Until the early 1930s, before the Great Depression fully impacted the Community with job losses, lower salaries, tax defaults, and foreclosures, lot sales were still heavily promoted by developers. Club Membership was a major selling point, even for undeveloped lots. According to Palos Verdes Homes Association minutes from the 1930s, “an avid non-resident golfer bought a ‘cheap’ lot, and it paid for itself through savings on greens fees.”

The GREAT DEPRESSION and WORLD WAR II

“Old Man Depression” The new community of Palos Verdes had been thriving since construction began in 1923. The 1920s were an era of lofty dreams, reflected in the meticulously crafted plans for the finest high-end community of Palos Verdes. The landscaping, architecturally distinctive homes, and public buildings featured in national magazines showcased the area.

Both the Community and the Golf Course flourished, and even though the population on the Peninsula had reached only 500 by 1930, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and conservationist Louis Bromfield wrote in Vogue, ‘In Palos Verdes...one has the impression of entering a paradise designed by the Spanish for the anointed of Heaven.’

However, like the rest of the country, the Community’s prosperity crumbled in 1929 with the stock market crash that triggered the Great Depression. By 1931, ‘paradise faced serious trouble,’ as Augusta Fink, author of Time and the Terraced Land, noted. The Great Depression hit Palos Verdes hard. By the mid to late 1930s, the effects of the Great Depression became undeniable. The financial situation became evident in the February 1933 issue of the Palos Verdes Bulletin when Club dues were reduced to seven dollars per month. Despite the challenging economic climate, the Club encouraged its Members to find solace on the Golf Course, emphasizing the therapeutic benefits of fresh air, sunshine, and exercise as reflected in the Palos Verdes Bulletins during that time.

During this time, the sale of the lots continued to be promoted by the developers, which included a Club Membership, even if the lot was undeveloped. According to the Palos Verdes Homes Association minutes from the 1930s, ‘an avid non-resident golfer bought a ‘cheap’ lot, and it paid for itself through his savings in greens fees.’ This marketing strategy eventually led to financial difficulties for the Club. Initially, developers covered operating losses with proceeds from property sales. However, as the 1920s ended and the Great Depression began, property sales stopped abruptly. —1933, PV Bulletin The events and hopeful announcements that had once filled the Community bulletins began to dwindle, and the production of the monthly PV Bulletin ceased altogether for a period of time.

The real estate boom had ended abruptly, resulting in widespread job losses, property foreclosures, and plummeting salaries. In this small town with a population of around 500 at least 200 homeowners fell behind on their taxes and faced foreclosure. Some residents left, leaving unpaid debts to local merchants. The developer was in debt, and property sales came to a standstill. The Homes Association, the community’s governing body, struggled as property owners, including the developer, failed to pay their assessments, leading to delinquent taxes on parklands, which supported the maintenance and upkeep of the Golf Course.

Despite aggressive efforts by the land corporation to sell property at a land auction, the financial situation remained dire in 1939. With threats from state and county governments looming, the Community was deeply divided on how to proceed. In a contentious decision, .

Community leaders proposed forming a City of the Sixth Class to . cancel debts and save parklands. On December 9, 1939, the city of Palos Verdes Estates was created, passing by a narrow margin.

The newly established city encompassed roughly 3,200 acres and . had an assessed valuation of approximately $2,000,000. Concurrent with the incorporation vote, the first City Council was elected. .

H.B.F. Roessler served with dedication as mayor for the initial 25 . years of Palos Verdes Estates’ cityhood, upholding the guiding . principles outlined by the Palos Verdes Project.

A.W. Tillinghast, one of the most prolific golf course architects in history, designed or worked on more than 265 courses.

In 1936, at the request of PGA Member and Palos Verdes Golf Club Professional Al Gruber, Tillinghast visited the Palos Verdes Golf Club to offer his expertise. In a letter to the President of the PGA dated February 9, 1936, Tillinghast recommended several improvements, including: “a new green for their tenth hole, selecting an entirely new site in the trees considerably to the left of the old one. This will add considerably to the length of the hole and at the same time offer a much better approach. I gave full instructions for clearing and grading.” It should be noted that, of all the recommendations provided by Tillinghast, the relocation of the tenth hole’s green was the only one implemented following his letter.

Parkland Property Deeded to the City After the Palos Verdes Homes Association deeded the park property to the newly formed City of Palos Verdes Estates on June 12, 1940, Rudolph Gassner was hired to manage the Club alongside Victor Norman, Chairperson of the Parks and Planning Commission. The Club began operating as a business and, for the first time in its history, closed operations without requiring public treasury funds due to a deficit.

The deed, which included the Golf Course and Clubhouse, stipulated that these properties were to be used for recreational purposes benefiting all City property owners and residents. This was crucial to the future of the Golf Course, preventing it from meeting the same fate as many other Southern California courses that no longer exist. At that time, delinquent property taxes on the parkland were forgiven. Fred Roessler, then President of the Palos Verdes Homes Association, became the First Mayor of Palos Verdes Estates. By 1940, the City’s population was approximately 950.

After the Golf Course and Clubhouse were deeded to the City, Rudolph Gassner was hired to manage the Club. Under his leadership, the Club began operating like a business.

Gassner promoted the Club to the community through ads in local publications, inviting them to the Clubhouse and Course to increase revenue. He successfully managed the Club, keeping it out of deficit, until he left to serve in the army in 1942.

Wartime Fears & A Call to Duty The onset of World War II brought unprecedented hardships and shock to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Community, especially after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The December 1941 issue of the Bulletin vividly captured the Community’s sense of fear and the sudden, stark realization of how quickly life could change. The issue’s theme revolved around the shock and horror of the attack, highlighting blackouts, air raid warnings, defense meetings, and the immediate dangers facing the Peninsula.

In the Bulletin, the urgency and peril were palpable: ‘Our beloved Peninsula is now in the immediate danger zone. Upon us has fallen the perilous honor of living on America’s frontier...Our Peninsula is an important strategic landmark. One single light may mean the doom of an entire community.’

The war efforts deeply affected everyone, including the Palos Verdes Golf Course. People were no longer in the mood for leisure activities like golf; instead, they were consumed with the war.

With the property now under the stewardship of the City, the management of the Palos Verdes Golf Course was entrusted to Rudolph Gassner, who oversaw the new lease. However, in 1942, significant changes occurred when Gassner was inducted into the United States Army due to the War.

Paul McNutt Paul McNutt first played golf at the Palos Verdes Golf Course in 1927, and his involvement with the Club grew far beyond that of a typical member. Alongside Gomer Sims, McNutt managed the Club during the war years, from 1941 to 1948, ensuring its survival.

His contributions were hands-on—tending the bar, maintaining the greens, watering the fairways, and even hand-sowing Bermuda grass to keep the Course in good condition.

McNutt was not only dedicated to the Club’s operations but was also an accomplished golfer. He consistently shot his age as long as he played, a remarkable achievement in the sport. His skills and longevity were celebrated in Golf Digest when he set a record by shooting a round of 75 at the age of 82. His commitment and contributions left a lasting impact on the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Gomer Sims Gomer Sims served as the greenskeeper of Palos Verdes Golf Club from the early 1930s until January 1946. Despite having minimal resources, Gomer successfully maintained the Course

through some of its most challenging times. His dedication extended beyond mere maintenance, as he was also an avid and highly skilled golfer. In 1941, several incidents at the Clubhouse raised liability concerns, and when no one else was willing to take over, Gomer stepped up and assumed responsibility. He then recruited Paul McNutt as his partner, and together they managed to keep the Club operational during these difficult years.

Gomer’s contributions went beyond the greens and Clubhouse Management. He was instrumental in bringing Bud Oakley to Palos Verdes and recruiting Lawrence Beaulac to oversee the Dining Room and Cocktail Bar, further stabilizing the Club.

Gomer earned the nickname “Potlikker” for his practice of picking mustard plants that grew around Palos Verdes and the Golf Course during the spring. He would boil the plants to make a vitamin-rich broth, known as “pot liquor,” which was commonly consumed during the Great Depression. Throughout the Depression and World War II, Gomer, Paul McNutt, and a few others managed to keep the Club running with just a Model A Ford, a mower, and a tractor—an impressive feat that ensured the Club’s survival during its toughest years.

Bud Oakley Rowland “Bud” Oakley dedicated over three decades of service to the Palos Verdes community as the Head Professional and Concessionaire of the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Born on July 22, 1908, Bud’s passion for golf began early when he started caddying at the age of twelve. His determination and commitment were evident from a young age. Born in Cleveland, his family eventually moved to the Pacific Northwest, where at just fourteen, Bud won the Junior Golf Championship of Seattle. His victory was especially remarkable as he competed with homemade clubs he crafted himself.

Bud first appeared at Palos Verdes Golf Course during the Second Annual Invitational Golf Tournament in 1926, unaware that he would one day build a lasting legacy at the Club. In 1931, Bud turned professional, beginning his career as an assistant at the old Hollywood Country Club. He toured professionally in 1936 and 1937 before moving to Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, where he played Monday events

In 1941, after winning the Southern California Verdes Golf Club. Bud also served as Vice President of the National PGA from 1961 to 1963 and was a referee in the PGA Championship matches.

Bud retired from Palos Verdes Golf Club on October 31,1974, but continued to teach for several more years. He passed away on March 15, 1997. His contributions to the Club have left a lasting impact, as he played a pivotal role in more than half of the Club’s history. Bud was inducted into the Southern California Golf Hall of Fame in 1985, ensuring his legacy would continue to inspire Members of Palos Verdes Golf Club for generations to come.

At that time, Rudy Gassner had been managing the Clubhouse for two years and had taken over the lease for that portion of the Course when the City of Palos Verdes Estates assumed control from the Homes Association.

After more than two months of deliberation, the City of Palos Verdes Estates reached a satisfactory agreement regarding the future of the Course and the Clubhouse. In 1946, they signed a two-year lease with Larry Beaulac, who had come from the Balboa Yacht Club. According to the agreement, Bud Oakley would be the Pro-Manager of the Golf Course, overseeing its upkeep, while Beaulac would take over the lease for the Clubhouse from the City Council.

Beaulac succeeded Paul McNutt and Gomer Sims, who had successfully operated lenging period. While major improvements to the Course and Clubhouse would come later, plans were immediately put into place, starting with remodeling the Men’s Locker Room, which included the installation of new tile and showers. were contingent on the availability of necessary outside help and materials, which were in short supply in the post-war years. This marked the beginning of a period of recovery and growth for Palos Verdes Golf Club, setting the stage for future developments.

After the Oakley family moved to Southern California in 1927, Bud Oakley began competing in amateur tournaments. During his early years at Palos Verdes Golf Club, around 1940, and up until his departure for military service during World War II, Bud found time to participate in various tournaments across Southern California. His dedication to both the Club and the sport allowed him to balance his responsibilities as a golf professional while continuing to compete at a high level in the regional golf scene.

The Formation of the Palos Verdes Golf Club After World War II, the influx of new residents to Los Angeles and its surrounding areas presented unique challenges for golf clubs, including Palos Verdes Golf Club. As courses like Recreation Park in Long Beach and Griffith Park in Los Angeles gained popularity, the Palos Verdes Estates City Council decided to keep green fees low to attract more players. While this strategy was initially successful, it resulted in overcrowding. Golfers from all over Southern California flocked to Palos Verdes Golf Club, making it a bustling venue.

In the early days, the Course typically hosted around 50 or 60 regular golfers.

Member Sid Croft recalls an incident in 1946 when his father, Harry Croft, and other regulars encountered five groups waiting at the fourth tee. Frustrated by the overcrowding, they decided to take action and convened a meeting at the Clubhouse, where they proposed forming a men’s golf club. The goal was to secure tee times for Members and improve the facilities. They approached Bud Oakley with the idea and pitched the plan to the City. The proposal required 250 people to pay $5 a month, in addition to regular green fees, with the fee covering any lost income Oakley might face due to a reduction in “outsider” play.

Although they initially recruited only 189 Members, Oakley agreed to proceed, and a Membership Drive was launched to secure the remaining memberships. By 1947, the modern-day Palos Verdes Men’s Club was officially formed.

The establishment of the Men’s Club marked the beginning of continuous improvements to the Course and its facilities. Over the years, Members voted on numerous assessments for upgrades, including four remodels of the Clubhouse, replacing the bridge three times, and installing a sprinkler system. In 1958, the Club also won the concession to take over the operation of the Clubhouse.

As the population of Palos Verdes Estates grew from 987 in 1940 to 1,957 in 1958, Club Membership increased accordingly. The adoption of a formal membership and dues structure helped sustain ongoing operations and improvements. These enhancements, driven by the dedication and vision of the Club’s Founders, Members, and Leaders, have ensured the Club’s continued success, benefiting both the City and the Club itself.

A Community Comes Together One of the Club’s early initiatives was implementing an annual Clean Up Day, where Members would gather on a Saturday to help maintain the Course. This event became a cherished tradition, with Members contributing their skills to improve the grounds. Tasks included trimming trees, raking leaves, and performing various maintenance activities. The day would conclude with . a grand barbecue and dance in an area known as .

The 1948 Southern California Open In 1948, the Palos Verdes Golf Club hosted the Southern California Open. According to Member Sid Croft, “at that time, the Course lacked a perimeter fence, and not enough tickets had been sold for the Event. However, the open access led to hundreds of spectators attending. Ted Rafalovich, the Club’s Treasurer, along with his wife Tilly and other volunteers, began selling tickets to everyone, including those who already had tickets. This effort was crucial in covering the Tournament expenses.

The tickets became so notable that even the Tournament Winner, Toney Penna, proudly wore one of the paper tickets that he had bought for himself from my mother as a badge of honor.”

The Rise and Growth of Women’s Golf During World War II, the Palos Verdes Women’s Golf Club (PVWGC) disbanded due to the war’s disruption and lack of course maintenance. However, in 1946, under Myrtle Dilley’s leadership and with the help of Lu Messall, the PVWGC reorganized and began its journey towards becoming a vital part of the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

By 1948, the Club saw significant milestones. Women were invited to attend the June regular meeting for the first time, marking a symbolic gesture of inclusion and recognition. This was followed by the PVWGC joining the Women’s Southern California Golf Association (WSCGA), allowing members to compete in state and regional championships.

In November 1948, the PVWGC ranked fifth in interclub team matches among prestigious clubs such as California Country Club, Virginia Country Club, Annandale, Oakmont, San Gabriel, Los Angeles Country Club, Riviera, Hillcrest, Wilshire, Lakeside, . and Bel Air. The PVWGC, still quite small, maintained a close-knit community. Monthly newsletters featured regular columns like “Digging Divots” by Nora Miller, “Barth’s Banter” by Frances Barth, and “Feminine Shorts” by Irene Newton. They highlighted Members’ activities and achievements, using folksy and descriptive terms like “pleased as punch.”

The transformation of Palos Verdes Golf Club from its earlier identity as Palos Verdes Golf Course marked the beginning of a continuous journey of improvement and growth. The founding of an official Men’s Club in 1947 empowered Members to take greater ownership of the Club and Course, uniting them in initiatives like clean-up days to maintain and enhance the grounds, fostering a close-knit golf community.

Starting with a then membership of 250 in 1951, the Club experienced notable growth throughout the 1950s, reaching its membership limit of 400 by 1959. This reflected the booming Southern California economy and the Club’s increasing reputation for quality.

Throughout this period, Members voted on numerous assessments to upgrade facilities, including remodeling the Clubhouse, replacing the bridge, and installing a sprinkler system, ensuring the Club continued to offer exceptional amenities to its expanding Membership.

A major milestone came on January 1, 1958, when the Club took over operation of the Clubhouse, granting greater control over its management and facilitating key improvements, helping shape the Palos Verdes Golf Club as it stands today.

Funded entirely by the assessments of its dedicated Members, these enhancements ensured that the Course could accommodate the . growing number of Members and Visitors.

1950 In 1950, Club Members voluntarily contributed to the fund for . constructing a new bridge on Hole No. 12. Over the years, this bridge has been replaced three times. The 450-foot wooden bridge, built in 1950, cost $10,000, entirely funded by Members through a voluntary assessment. The October 1950 issue of the Bull-E-Ten highlighted: “We have no large initiation fee as most other clubs do, and this is . the first time in the Club’s history that there has been any type of . assessment, which is strictly voluntary.”

1956 A new green was proposed for Hole No. 10, which remains in its original location today. Additionally, new tees were constructed on Holes No. 11, 13, and 18, strategically positioned further away . from the street to enhance safety and playability.

1958 Significant updates occurred in 1958, including the removal of the old bridge from Hole No. 12. New traps were added to Holes No. 11 and 14, and substantial grading and seeding were done on the tees of Holes No. 12 and 18. The tee area of Hole No. 10 was elevated by about four feet. The Greens Committee, under the supervision of Frank Waddell and H. Rainville, installed flagstone around the water fountains, provided rakes for traps, and completed various tee repairs and leveling. Hole No. 3 underwent a major transformation with rough grading and contouring, resulting in a well-trapped large . green and the creation of a dogleg.

In the early 1950s, the Board introduced a policy requiring players to wear shirts. This decision, made in a closed vote despite strong objections from many Members, reflected the changing times and evolving expectations of the Membership.

• In 1957, the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) officially adjusted the Course rating . from 72 to 71. This change acknowledged . the Course’s evolving challenges and design . improvements over the years.

• The first Palos Verdes Golf Club Year Book was published in 1958, providing a comprehensive record of the Club’s activities, achievements, . and Membership.

• By 1959, construction began on new facilities that included a bar, cocktail lounge, card room, and Men’s Locker Room. These enhancements were designed to elevate the Member experience while making the most of the Clubhouse’s scenic views.

Originally Hole No. 9 had a deep barranca crossing the fairway with an uphill climb. Cliff, finding the climb difficult as he aged, got permission from Bud Oakley in the late 1950s to fill in the barranca. Cliff transformed the hole making the assent to the top much easier.

“Anot he r day in paradi se ” When Members meet at Palos Verdes Golf Club, a common greeting is “Another day in paradise.” This describes my experience for more than 70 years.

The Palos Verdes Estates climate is extraordinary. The temperature is rarely over 80 or under 60. Our championship Golf Course is in excellent condition and playable year-round.

Most golf courses are approximately 125 acres; Palos Verdes is twice that.

It is park-like, with hawks flying overhead every day. The Course perfectly captures the topography, as the natural terrain is routed on ridges, bisected, and flanked by beautiful canyons and colorful hillsides. It is truly breathtaking!

Palos Verdes Estates is the ultimate planned community, with 40% designated as parkland. Every structure is custom-designed and approved by the PVHA Art Jury. The Olmsted firm prepared the original landscape plan for the entire area. Charles H. Cheney, acknowledged as one of the USA’s greatest community planners, stated, “Palos Verdes is the finest location in America for a high-end development.” Cheney and Olmsted both built homes to live here.

PVGC is at the foot of Santa Monica Bay and just over a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Most afternoons, the ocean breeze comes up Malaga Canyon.

It is miles from any freeway, and there are no roads with heavy traffic or streets wider than two lanes, making traffic noise nearly obsolete. You may even see a strolling peacock from time to time in the nearby neighborhoods.

I feel very lucky for my time spent at PVGC. It was an honor to be introduced to this game by my father. I later caddied at PVGC and worked for Bud Oakley, knowing him for more than 40 years. Over those years, I was able to play here with my father and then do the same with my son. I have met more fine people than I can count. I have been so fortunate to have so many friendships and experiences with Members and Staff at the Club. It has culminated in a lifetime of memories, and the list continues to grow to this day.

When the Golf Course opened on November 15, 1924, it was at the height of an era described as America’s “Golden Age” of classic golf course design.

PVGC was a classic in 1924 and remains that way today. The architecture, design, and construction combined the talents of George C. Thomas, as a consultant, and William Bell, two of the greatest of all time. Both are in the Southern California Golf Hall of Fame, and their prestigious biographies cite their work at Palos Verdes Golf Club, along with LACC, Riviera CC, and Bel-Air CC. One of my favorite aspects of the Course is its dramatic changes in elevation. Several holes are adjacent to hills or wild canyons, and some holes require tee shots over barrancas. No two holes are alike. The character of play varies depending on the time of day and wind conditions. The topography rarely provides a flat lie, so every round offers unique challenges and moments of triumph and defeat.

Golf writer Darsie R. Darsie wrote in 1930: “Palos Verdes Golf Club is a work of art. Every hole is a feature in itself. A few hours spent on this course cannot help but make one envious of those fortunate who claim PVGC as their home course.”

In all my years of membership at the Club, I have never heard anyone say they are tired of playing golf here. I have played over 5,000 rounds at PVGC and still cannot wait to tee it up again. The Club atmosphere at PVGC has always been congenial, open, and welcoming too, which is dear to my heart.

PVGC provides everything a golfer wants, including championships and numerous tournaments throughout the year for men, women, and juniors.

Summer league, team play, and couples twilight golf help to engage all in friendly competition, bringing much joy and laughter. Members also participate routinely in the Southern California Golf Association-sanctioned events.

The PVGC Junior Program has a 70-plus-year history, beginning in 1949 with then-PVGC President Ralph Miller and Bud Oakley. Former PVGC juniors include a USGA champion, runner-up finishers in two USGA national championships, and both PGA and LPGA Tour professionals. We are proud to have longtime member Mark Pfeil, a PGA Tour winner, Walker Cup Team champion, and multiple-time participant in The Masters, with over a 20-year pro tour career. PVGC has enjoyed numerous men and women collegiate players, including a captain of an NCAA Division 1 Men’s Championship Team and the 2024 Big East Player of the Year, Megan Gormley, the daughter of . our esteemed Director of Golf, Jim Gormley, PGA. No club has a stronger tradition of giving back to the game. We host an LPGA event and the top-rated Division 1 women’s collegiate invitational, The Therese Hession Regional Challenge presented by Northrop Grumman.

PVGC once hosted a junior tournament where Tiger Woods was a two-time winner, and we still host the Palos Verdes High School golf team matches for both boys and girls. We are also a frequent qualifying site for USGA and SCGA events.

Magazines publish golf course ratings based on conditions and features . at the time of year when played. When they publish ratings that include a classic course, premier location, year-round playability, and breathtaking views, PVGC should stand tall above the rest. Add on an infectious club atmosphere and culture, and you will know why I have loved every minute of this incredible ride. Palos Verdes Golf Club will forever be my special place and should be at the top of the list for anyone who has the pleasure to experience it now or in the future.

During the late 1950s and 1960s, Bill Krueger, the contractor and designer of the new bar area, transformed the north portion of the Clubhouse, which previously lacked views.The remodel introduced large windows above a sunken bar, allowing Members to fully enjoy the stunning views.

In 1958, the Palos Verdes Golf Club secured the Concession Agreement to operate the Clubhouse, marking the beginning of . an ongoing series of enhancements. Members were assessed $275 to raise funds for the planned improvements. Needing as many assessments as possible to fund all the necessary changes, the Club turned to the current waitlist and significantly increased the Membership number. From 1951, with a Membership that totaled only 84, by 1959, the official Membership limit was set at 400.

As the years went on, by 1969, a new Concession Agreement had been written. Non-resident new Memberships were limited to two per year, but only if there were no residents with current applications on the waitlist. Membership was increased to 425 as there was a significant number of Palos Verdes residents on the waitlist. By the

end of the decade, the waitlist had grown to 175.

The 1960s marked a period of significant growth and enhancement for the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Under the diligent leadership of Bud Oakley and his team, the Club saw numerous physical improvements that greatly enhanced both the Course and the Clubhouse facilities. These included remodeling the Dining Room, adding a new Kitchen, and updating offices.

Membership was actively involved with the Course improvements.

Entering the 1960s with a balanced budget, the Club was able to successfully secure a new lease with Palos Verdes Estates, setting a strong foundation for future growth and success.

The 1960s were undoubtedly a transformative decade for the Palos Verdes Golf Club, with extensive improvements ensuring its status and future.

changes to the course: 1960 s 1960 A new tee for Hole No. 16 was started between Hole No. 15. green and Paseo Del Campo. The fill on the left side of Hole No. 5 green was completed and seeded, and a new tee for Hole No. 2 was initiated with fill dirt to the right of the old tee. Additionally, new . sod was placed on Hole No. 15 after the old sod was removed . and transferred to the new Hole No. 16 tee.

1961 Hole No. 8 saw a new pathway to Hole No. 9 tee, while Hole No. 2 and Hole No. 4 installed pathways down from tee to green. Plans were made for a new tee area on Hole No. 17 to lengthen it and make Hole No. 18 a real dogleg. A trial sprinkler system was installed on Holes No. 7 and 14, to be tied into the Master Sprinkler Plan. Furthermore, Bill Holden designed and laid out a new garden and walkway.

1962 A new bridge was built on Hole No. 2, and new greens and tees . were added to Holes No. 2, 4, 7, 15, and 18. Hole No. 14 was. enlarged and re-sodded by Bill Holden. The year also saw the . addition of a new putting green in addition to the established . lower putting green with new traps and a pitching area.

1963 Hole No. 1 was revamped with new traps and new turf. The old putting green on Hole No. 7 was converted to a chipping area, and turf from the fairway on Hole No. 11 was used to enlarge the new tee.

Additionally, a new bridge on Hole No. 14 was completed.

1964 The bridge on Hole No. 12 was re-decked, similar . to the bridge on Hole No. 2.

1965 Bud Oakley and Bill Holden re-handicapped the .

Course correctly and completely.

1967 The green on Hole No. 6 was enlarged, and new cart paths . were installed between Holes No. 2 and 7.

1968 A new tee was constructed for Hole No. 4, and Hole No. 6 received . a new green and enlarged tee with split levels. Palm trees were . replanted to the rear of the green. Hole No. 14 also got a new tee, with a proposal for a kidney-shaped tee extending almost 15 feet higher. Sprinkler lines were installed on the left side of the fairways for Holes No. 1, 6, and 13. The grass bunker in front of the green . on Hole No. 17 was changed to a large sand trap.

1969 The bridge on Hole No. 12 was repaired with new cross braces and one main support replaced. The green on Hole No. 3 was completely redesigned with an increased tee area. Fifty tons of new sand were placed in the traps, and new greens with good drainage and a new walk ramp to the tee were completed and in use.

• The Dining Room was closed as it underwent . a complete remodeling and expansion in . the early 1960s.

• The completion of the Fern Room in 1964, . featured a new bar and restrooms, further . enhancing the Clubhouse.

• The Palos Verdes Junior Golf Club was established

by Reg Dawson, Al Greenleaf, and Bud Oakley, . with Jay McDonald serving as the first .

• The Snack Shack was remodeled in 1965 to . provide more extensive services at the turn.

Esther Welch spent her 85th birthday Thursday as she has spent nearly every day of her life since the turn of the century—carrying 10 to 15 pounds on her right shoulder, chasing a ball at least five miles. She thought it was disgusting for anyone to play the game riding around in a golf cart. Mrs. Welch generally finishes off the day after playing 18 holes by walking five miles from the course to a market, then home. Mrs. Welch has a 30 handicap, which means her score averages about 100 for 18 holes. Bud Oakley, the pro at Palos Verdes Golf Club, where Mrs. Welch has been a member as long as anyone can remember, insists the octogenarian ‘is by far the fastest walker of all the players—men or women.

She’s faster on foot than many girls young enough to be her great-granddaughter—and plays a better game than most.’

A Golden Anniversary The 1970s marked the Palos Verdes Golf Club’s 50th Anniversary, a period of significant transformation that set the stage for the Club’s future. This decade was pivotal in strengthening the Club’s foundation, both in its organizational structure and on the Course, ensuring long-term stability and growth.

A key turning point came early in the decade when Bud Oakley . announced his retirement. His decision to transfer operational rights to the Club’s Members, rather than selling to outside operators, sparked negotiations with the City of Palos Verdes Estates. The result was a new Concession Agreement, granting the Club full control over the management of the .

Golf Course and Clubhouse–securing continued Member governance . and operational autonomy.

The most defining moment came in 1974, as the Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Bud Oakley’s choice to hand over operational rights to the Members cemented their control of the Course, creating an enduring legacy that would shape the next 50 years.

HIGHLIGHTS The Club hosted Honors Nite in 1970, a day to look back and honor all the Past Presidents and Past Club Champions with . a day of golf, dinner, and fun.

• In 1972, it was named the “Drop Out Year” when the Club . lost sixty Members, more than double the usual number, due to retirement, moving away, deaths, and other issues. Luckily, there was still a large waitlist of prospective Members.

• PVGC’s Outstanding Amateur, 23-year-old Mark Pfeil, played on the 1973 U.S. Walker Cup Team, earning 2½ points in the USA’s convincing win over England/Ireland.

• In 1975, Bud Oakley retired after 35 years, turning over the .

Golf Course Lease and Concession to the PVGC Membership.

Negotiations with the City of Palos Verdes Estates for the . new Golf Course Lease and Concession took three years. .

Bud was celebrated at a banquet honoring his remarkable .

So in 1972 the negotiations with the City began and they continued throughout 1973 until the City and the Club finally came to an agreement in 1974 which was also the Club’s Golden Anniversary.

Mark Pfeil Mark Pfeil was raised in Palos Verdes from the age of five, where his love for golf was nurtured by his parents and guided by Bud Oakley, PVGC’s Head Professional. His talent blossomed in high school, where he won the CIF Championship, and later at USC, earning All-American honors. His selection for the prestigious 1973 Walker Cup Team marked the beginning of a remarkable career.

In 1975, Mark qualified for the PGA Tour, beginning a 20-year journey that included five professional victories and the honor of competing in The Masters at Augusta National. PVGC has always been Mark’s home, with his roots firmly planted in the Club. Growing up near the 17th hole, the Course became a central part of his life, and today, he takes great joy in playing there with his grandsons, passing on his love for the game.

Mark and his wife Diana, both graduates of Palos Verdes High School, remain deeply connected to the Community and PVGC. As the Club celebrates its 100th Anniversary, Mark’s lifelong bond with PVGC reflects the enduring connection and passion he has for both the game and the place that has shaped so much of his life

Course Improvements To further improve the Course, significant capital improvements were made, financed by a $1,000 interest-free loan assessed to each Member. This investment led to the construction of new greens on Hole No. 7, 8 and 9 along with a new pumphouse, an advanced irrigation system, and a picturesque lake. The sprinkler system was completed in 1976.

The latter part of the decade saw continued enhancements. In 1976, a split-rail fence was constructed around the Course.

The Fern Room and the adjacent patio area were upgraded, adding to the Club’s charm and functionality. In 1978, the Club increased its maximum Membership to 500 and improved the safety of the bridge on Hole No. 12, along with adding restroom facilities at the fifth tee.

The 1970s at Palos Verdes Golf Club were marked by significant change, heartfelt dedication, and a deepening of community and environmental stewardship, paving the way for the thriving legacy that the Club enjoys today.

In 1972, Greens Superintendent Colin Emerson provided recommendations for the “proposed improvement of the course” to the Board of Directors. These recommendations were intended for consideration and presentation to the City of Palos Verdes Estates, to be used in negotiating the Concession Agreement. The agreement was successfully signed on September 24, 1974, by Golf Club President Glenn Pfeil.

Biggest Improvement: The Sprinkler System The sprinkler system, completed in 1975, marked the most significant improvement to the Course since its inception. Most of the work took place between 1974 and 1975 after the Members assumed control of the Course. During this period, the “lakes” on Hole No. 7 and the pumphouse on Hole No. 9 were constructed. The entire Course was trenched to install pipes and pop-up sprinklers, with construction proceeding two or three holes at a time.

Before the installation of the modern sprinkler system, the Course was typically dry and hard outside the rainy season. Local rules even allowed players to move their ball from earth cracks or drop it away from the wall on Hole No. 3 without penalty. The Course was manually watered by the “Bud Oakley” Greens Crew, using a WWII jeep purchased by Bud, while the greens crew hand-watered the greens and tees.

This lack of consistent irrigation led to unique playing conditions. According to Members who were around at the time, players teed off on Hole No. 5 with a 3-iron 1970, Hole No. 6

to ensure their ball would run past the trees on the right.

Similarly, a 3-iron was the preferred club on Hole No. 10, where a ball rolling down the hill could surpass a drive that had traveled 60 yards further in the air but landed against

His proximity to the Club, living in Palos Verdes Estates, and the opportunity to see friends at the bar after meetings likely contributed to his dedication. His contributions were instrumental in the project’s success.

1979 closed with a stunning natural event: two inches of hail covered the greens and fairways, briefly transforming the landscape into a wintry scene reminiscent of a Currier and Ives lithograph, complete with eucalyptus and palm trees standing in for traditional snow-draped hemlocks. Our club area was pelted by a mid afternoon, 15 minute hail storm that left the course bathed in almost two inches of the white stuff. Hail stones the size of large marbles were abundant. The course, for a few hours at least, resembled a Currier and Ives scene with eucalyptus trees and palms rather than snow-draped hemlocks.

The 1980s were a period of competitive excellence, during which the Club’s reputation on the golfing circuit was significantly bolstered by the achievements of its Members. Notably, Cathy Hanlon’s victory in the prestigious L.A. City Women’s Golf Championship in 1980 and her runner-up finish to Juli Inkster in the Women’s Amateur Championship in 1982 were testaments to the Club’s commitment to nurturing talent and maintaining its stature within the broader golfing community. Her success was not an isolated event but a reflection of the Club’s broader culture of excellence, where Members were encouraged to push their limits and achieve new heights. This commitment to fostering talent and competition helped solidify the Club’s status as a hub of golfing prowess, drawing in both seasoned players and rising stars eager to hone their skills in a supportive yet challenging environment.

As the Club transitioned into the 1990s, a series of strategic developments further enhanced its facilities and overall Membership experience. This decade was characterized by a forward-thinking approach to both infrastructure and governance, ensuring that the Club could meet the evolving needs of its Members while preserving the essence of its historic charm. A significant milestone was reached in 1992 with the installation of a Bio-Therm heating system under the 4th green. This cutting-edge solution, which ensured year-round playability despite winter frost, was emblematic of the Club’s dedication to providing a top-tier golfing experience, regardless of the season. This innovation not only improved the practical aspects of play but also demonstrated the Club’s willingness to invest in new technologies that enhanced the Course.

In 1993, the Club finalized a pivotal agreement with the City, adopting a Membership limit and establishing a Club Improvement Fund. The Board Members, along with Phil Frengs, were instrumental in negotiating this limited Membership stipulation. This Fund became crucial in financing capital improvements, ensuring that the

• In 1983, a new Concession Agreement with the City of Palos Verdes Estates superseded the 1974 Agreement, combining Clubhouse and Golf Course Concessions into one document. This Agreement required Members to invest in the Club’s expansion and improvement.

• Stuart Jones served as Project Manager for the Clubhouse expansion, coordinating contracts and monitoring expenses during 1985.

• A new Pro Shop and Cart Storage Facilities . were constructed and opened in 1987.

• The 1983 Concession Agreement mandated . a maximum regular Membership of 500 and . required the acceptance of all valid applications from Residents within 90 days.

To address the Membership increase, the Club . and the City negotiated a change to the .

Concession Agreement, setting an absolute . maximum Membership limit.

• The Men’s Locker Room was expanded, . and the former Locker Room was converted . into administrative offices.

• The Clubhouse was remodeled, including . a new Women’s Locker Room, and the bars . were relocated.

The PVGC Board of Directors thoughtfully . negotiated the second Concession Agreement, which initiated the assessment for the Clubhouse expansion in 1984 and 1985.

Club’s facilities could keep pace with the demands of its growing Membership. One of the most notable projects financed by this Fund was the construction of a new Driving Range in 1995, a long-anticipated addition that significantly enhanced the Club’s training and practice facilities.

This period also saw the development of a comprehensive Master Plan, which provided a roadmap for the Club’s growth and modernization well into the late 1990s.

Under the astute leadership of the PVGC Board Members throughout the years, the Club navigated these decades with a careful balance of preserving its unique character while embracing modern improvements. These years laid a solid foundation for the Club’s continued success as it approached the new millennium.

The New Driving Range When designer William P. Bell, working with George C. Thomas, Jr., first laid out the plans for Palos Verdes Golf Course, the Olmsted Brothers’ landscape design included a practice fairway strategically placed just north of the tenth hole. However, the early concessionaires did not prioritize this feature, and the land was eventually designated for the Palos Verdes Tennis Club instead.

For decades, golfers made do with makeshift practice areas on the eighteenth fairway and the rough along the right side of the first fairway. It wasn’t until 1993 that the Board of Directors, after years of inaction and speculation, assigned Jim Dunn the task of creating a proper driving range in the barranca between holes six and seven. This area had previously served as a landfill. Understanding the complexity of the required approvals, a detailed plan was crafted to navigate the bureaucratic challenges.

Months were spent proving that the construction would not harm the delicate habitats of the Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly, Coastal Cactus Wren, California Gnatcatcher, or various native plants. Additionally, it was confirmed that no Gabrielino Indian remains would be disturbed. When construction began in the spring of 1994, the Range’s orientation had to be adjusted to avoid a 21-inch water line. The new layout utilized the canyon’s length, necessitating the installation of a 48-inch diameter drain pipe. This pipe extended 400 feet along a streambed, channeling rainwater from the expansive 250-acre watershed above the Course. A significant spillway was also integrated to manage overflow during a 50-year storm event.

earth to be cut and 60,000 cubic yards to be filled. During this process, unexpected rock formations were uncovered, leading to further design adjustments. A tunnel was also constructed beneath the eighth fairway to ensure safe access to the newly positioned practice tee.

Karen Mabli Karen Mabli is a name that holds a special place within the Palos Verdes Golf Club Community. A dedicated and avid golfer, Mabli has not only served on the Board but continues to be an active and involved Member, exemplifying the Club’s rich legacy. Her remarkable achievements, including 14 Club Championships, numerous titles across Southern California, and competing in over a hundred national tournaments, speak to her dedication to the sport. Although her golfing journey began at Glendora Country Club at a very young age, it was at Palos Verdes where she found her second home. With her husband by her side as her caddie during national championships, Mabli’s illustrious career has been a shared adventure. Today, she continues to inspire with her unwavering passion for golf, reinforcing the Club’s tradition of camaraderie and excellence.

Junior Golf The Junior Program at Palos Verdes Golf Club boasts a rich history spanning over 70 years, dating back to 1949, when PVGC President Ralph Miller and Bud Oakley co-founded the SCGA Junior Golf Program. Many former Juniors have gone on to achieve remarkable success, including a USGA Champion, two runner-up finishes in USGA National Championships, and several PGA Tour Professionals. Among them is a PGA Tour winner and a 15-year Masters participant. Notably, Tiger Woods is a two-time winner of PVGC’s prestigious Junior Invitational. The Program has also produced LPGA players and numerous men’s and women’s collegiate athletes, including the captain of an NCAA Division I Men’s Championship Team.

West End Project In 2005, construction began on the West End Project to expand and restore the Clubhouse to the Mediterranean design originally envisioned by architects C.E. Howard and Myron Hunt in 1924.

The renovation aimed to preserve the historical character of the Clubhouse while incorporating essential updates to bring the Club into the 21st century.

Though the actual construction took just 16 months, the entire project was in development for over 13 years. Planning commenced after the completion of the Men’s Locker Room and Grill Room, leading to a remodel that expanded the original 20,000-square-foot Clubhouse to nearly 37,000 square feet.

The West End Project allowed the Club to host Member activities independent of outside events. The project also increased parking by 65 spaces, reducing the need for street parking during events and . alleviating the use of the golf parking lot for Clubhouse patrons.

The remodel struck a careful balance between honoring the rich history of the Palos Verdes Golf Club and ensuring it remained a vibrant, functional space for future generations. The nearly 13-year journey to restore and modernize the Clubhouse resulted in a facility that retained its original 1924 charm while meeting the evolving needs of the Club’s Members in the 21st century.

Jim Gormley, PGA For nearly three decades, Jim Gormley, PGA, Director of Golf, has been shaping the history of the Palos Verdes Golf Club. His journey at PVGC started back in 1996 as an Assistant Golf Professional, where he quickly established himself as a dedicated and skilled professional, eventually rising to the position of Head Golf Professional in 2001. Throughout his career, Gormley has demonstrated a deep passion for growing the game and a commitment to excellence. He was named Southern California PGA Metro Chapter Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006, and was further recognized as Southern California PGA Section Player of the Year in 2008.

His love for golf began after his freshman year of college when a baseball injury forced him to choose a different sports path. After a successful collegiate career, he turned professional, qualified for the Canadian Tour, but continued to work at PVGC. His competitive experience includes qualifying for the 2006 PGA Tour’s Nissan LA Open, 2009 PGA Tour’s Northern Trust LA Open and 2007 Nationwide’s Mark Christopher Charity Classic. His competitive professional experience included developmental tours such as the Golden State Tour, the Canadian Tour, and the NGA Hooters Tour. Beyond his personal achievements, Gormley has played a crucial role in mentoring rising stars of the LPGA and is a recognized teacher for many touring pros. His coaching has been instrumental in the success of Lizette Salas, who is a 2-time Winner on the LPGA tour and a five time Solheim Cup Team Member.

Gormley’s golf influence extends to his family, particularly his oldest daughter Megan, who has followed in his footsteps. She was named 2024 Big East Player of the Year and is a 2-year Captain of the Women’s Golf Team at Georgetown University, representing the next generation of talent at the Club.

Gormley’s dedication to golf was further recognized in 2022 when he was named Southern California Golf Professional of the Year for his exceptional leadership, service, and promotion of the game. Previously honored as the 2018 Golf Professional of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association, Gormley has consistently supported Junior Golf and created memorable experiences for players and their families. Jim and his wife, Mindy, love the Palos Verdes community and call Palos Verdes Estates home.

They live just minutes from the Club where they continue to raise and inspire their three daughters, Megan, Bridgette, and Paige and remain an integral part of the PVGC family.

Therese Hession Regional Challenge Presented by Northrop Grumman Established in 1996 by Cathy Marino, a Hall of Famer at Palos Verdes Golf Club, along with Therese Hession from Ohio State University and Sid Croft, a PVGC Member, the Therese Hesion Regional Challenge presented by Northrop Grumman (previously named Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge) has been held for 28 years at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Marino and Hession, both former LPGA competitors and teammates at Southern Methodist University, first envisioned the tournament during Marino’s time as ead coach at SMU and Hession’s early coaching years at Ohio State.

This prestigious event continues to draw 16 of the top-ranked NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Teams to Palos Verdes Golf Club.

In 2024, the University of South Carolina secured victory by the narrowest of margins and was crowned the Champion of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge (THRC). As the Team Champion, South Carolina was invited to select a player to compete in the LPGA FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship at PVGC. The coaches and players chose Hannah Darling, a junior from Midlothian, Scotland.

Hannah, a standout player who was a First Team All-American in 2022 and 2023, an ANNIKA Award finalist, and First Team All-SEC in both years, claimed the top prize in 2024.

The continued success of this Tournament is a testament to the dedication of coaches, players, volunteers, and alma maters who contribute year after year. The event also thrives thanks to the unwavering support of sponsors like Northrop Grumman. East End Project The Clubhouse, originally remodeled to restore its 1924 charm and expanded in the early 2000s, required further updates by 2021 to modernize the dining areas and bar for a new generation and the upcoming Centennial Anniversary. In 2022, construction was completed on a new bar area, including a spacious casual dining section named Oakley’s, after the esteemed Bud Oakley. Additionally, a fine dining area called The Cove was designed and built.

Elevated Dining Experience As the Palos Verdes Golf Club grows and attracts more Members, the dining experience has become a central focus. To meet evolving tastes and increasing demand, the decision was made to expand the kitchen facilities. This transformation began in 2019 with the arrival of Chef Garrett Yokoyama, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, who brought a fresh, innovative approach to the Club’s culinary program. Chef Garrett had previously worked at Trump National Golf Club and Sherwood Country Club and quickly became a wonderful addition to the PVGC family.

After many years of challenges from only having one kitchen to put on a large event and provide exemplary ala carte dining for its Membership, Palos Verdes Golf Club made the difficult decision to repurpose its former Bud Oakley Room into the new Banquet Kitchen. As part of the kitchen renovation was the creation of an expanded Lower Prep Kitchen that required 12 tons of dirt and PV Stone to be removed during excavation.

The expanded kitchen, with an additional 888 square feet in the prep area and 864 square feet in the primary kitchen, was designed to accommodate extended dining hours, Saturday night dining, and large events, while still providing ala carte dining. It also allows the ability to host impressive tournaments like the LPGA Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship and the Therese Hession Regional Challenge annually.

With increased space and upgraded refrigeration, the kitchen can now serve over 500 guests, significantly enhancing the Club’s ability to cater to both intimate gatherings and major events.

This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Food and Beverage team, the Board of Directors, Club Architect and Board Director Carolbeth Cozen, General Manager David Stocke, CCM and House Committee Chair and Vice President John Barry. Together, they have positioned the Palos Verdes Golf Club to offer an elevated dining experience that meets the high expectations of its Members and guests.

LPGA Comes to PVGC Palos Verdes Golf Club welcomed the LPGA for the first time in 2022. In the Tournament’s inaugural year, it was known as the Palos Verdes Championship by Bank of America. In 2023, the Tournament was named the DIO Implant LA Open.

The 2024 FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship marked the LPGA Tour’s third consecutive year at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Marina Alex captured her first LPGA Tour win in four years at the 2022 edition of the Palos Verdes Championship.

In the 2023 Tournament, 20-year-old Tour Rookie Ruoning Yin claimed her first LPGA Tour victory at 15-under par, at the DIO Implant LA Open. A second victory later in the year at the Women’s PGA Championship propelled her to World No. 1.

In the latest 2024 edition, a field of 144 of the greatest female professional golfers in the world competed for a share of the $2 million purse, delivering some of the most thrilling moments in professional golf. Nelly Korda earned her 10th career victory at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club, reclaiming the No. 1 spot in the Rolex World Rankings. This achievement added to the Tournament’s legacy of showcasing top-tier talent and memorable performances.

PVGC Olympians In early August 2024, viewers worldwide were captivated by the Olympic Women’s Golf Tournament at Le Golf National in Paris. For those familiar with Palos Verdes Golf Club, many faces in the Olympic field were instantly recognizable. A significant portion of the athletes competing in Paris had played at PVGC in our prestigious Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, now known as the Therese Hession Regional Challenge.

Among the Olympic field were three of our past Champions: Lilia Vu (UCLA, 2018) and Rose Zhang (Stanford, 2023), who proudly represented Team USA, and Carlota Ciganda (Arizona State, 2011), representing Spain.

the centennial project The Centennial Project at Palos Verdes Golf Club, launched in 2022 ahead of the Club’s 100-Year Anniversary, is a forward-thinking initiative to modernize and enhance its facilities, ensuring the Club remains a premier destination for the next century. This Project is part of a broader effort to update the Club experience and adapt to the evolving needs of Members, Residents, and families. The timing was ideal for investing in major upgrades, guided by a vision to improve amenities and attract new Members.

As part of the Concession Agreement with the City of Palos Verdes Estates, the Club is required to make significant capital improvements to its infrastructure and facilities to improve Member retention and attract new Members. Since 2015, the Club has already invested over $6 million in golf course improvements and has successfully completed a $2.5 million renovation and enhancement of the Driving Range and Short Game Areas.

The Centennial Project is structured in two phases. Phase 1 focuses on the Driving Range and Short Game Practice Area, involving substantial upgrades such as improved drainage and irrigation systems to prevent closures due to storm damage, ensuring the Course remains in optimal condition year-round. Phase 2 centers on Clubhouse renovations and improvements, aimed at modernizing and elevating the facilities, including updates to locker rooms and fitness areas, to provide a contemporary and enhanced experience for all Members and visitors.

The launch of the Centennial Project began in 2022 with the formation of a dedicated Long Range Planning Sub-Committee of 15 Members, led

by Chair Chris Riegel, 2023 President Steve Lopes, and General Manager David Stocke, CCM. Over a three-year period, the plans were carefully crafted and refined, with input and feedback gathered through 22 presentations to the Membership, including four General Membership meetings.

Through these renovations, the Centennial Project ensures that the Club continues to provide a welcoming environment for current Members while attracting new Members, Palos Verdes Estates residents, and families. By investing in state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure, Palos Verdes Golf Club is positioning itself to thrive and remain competitive with world-class courses for the next century.

The Driving Range & Short Game Area The Board of Directors, Members and Palos Verdes Estates City Council approved the Centennial Project, beginning with Driving Range and Short Game area improvements that broke ground on May 14, 2024. This Project was completed

by September 1, 2024 with major upgrades that included an enlarged Driving Range with more tee box surface area and a primary focus on repairing drainage and a state-of-the-art irrigation system. These improvements addressed decades-old issues that caused frequent closures from storm damage and erosion, ensuring the range can now withstand severe weather.

The $2.5 million project included turf replacement, new target greens, and an enhanced practice green near the first tee. Other upgrades involved repositioning bunkers, adding a new practice green for chipping and a bunker near the Clubhouse. The Driving Range now enjoys improved sightlines by widening the range basin and selective tree removals.

The new facilities offer a world-class practice experience while enhancing safety and playability.

Clubhouse Renovations and Improvements On April 1, 2024, the PVGC Membership officially approved the Centennial Project (Phase I & Phase II) by majority vote, with 327 yes votes (62%) versus 207 no votes (38%).

Plans to begin Phase II of the Centennial Project, which includes major enhancements to the Clubhouse facilities, have begun with schematic design, followed by design development, leading to construction documents and the final bid phase prior to construction. The Club has hired prominent clubhouse architect Erik Peterson of PHX Architecture and Lincoln Property Management as the Project Manager. This renovation represents not just a physical upgrade but a celebration of the Club’s legacy and its ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional Member experience.

The centerpiece of this phase is the construction of a new two-story building, replacing the existing Pro Shop and bag storage facilities. Alongside this, significant improvements will be made to the main Clubhouse, including an expansion of the fitness areas, aligning with the Club’s goal of meeting the evolving needs of its Members. The Club is investing $17.5 million from its CIF funds, primarily funded by a Member loan, refundable assessment, and cash reserves, to bring this project to life for the next century of success and to solidify excellence throughout.

The new 13,000-square-foot building will house an expanded Pro Shop, complete with a state-of-the-art golf simulator, a larger bag storage area with potential space for electric push carts, and improved golf cart staging to streamline traffic flow. A snack bar and grill with an outdoor dining area will offer Members a casual space to enjoy meals while taking in ocean views.

Upstairs, the new Men’s Locker Room will feature a lounge, card room, and balcony, providing a refined space for relaxation. Enhancements to the Fitness Center include dedicated areas for cardio, fitness classes, and motion studios, with views of the Golf Course and ocean. The renovations also encompass an expanded Member event deck with fire pits, offering a space for gatherings.

In addition to these developments, the Bud Oakley Room and Women’s Locker Room will be updated, and the current Men’s Locker Room will be repurposed into a new boardroom and chef ’s table for private events. The PVGC Staff will also benefit with new office and meeting spaces, along with the potential for additional storage. Improvements to Member entrances and the addition of a pergola at the lower parking lot level, as well as a porte cochere at the main dining entrance, will further elevate the Club’s appeal.

The Phase II Centennial Project ensures that the Club remains poised to thrive for . the next 100 years.

Environmental Stewardship and Innovation PVGC has a commitment to protecting the natural resources surrounding it. As part of this ongoing effort, two initiatives are currently underway: the Habitat Restoration Plan and the Solar Initiative.

The Habitat Restoration Plan focuses on revitalizing 1.65 acres along the Valmonte Trail in the Malaga Dunes area. This unique ecosystem, located within the 57-acre Malaga Dunes complex, is adjacent to the recycled water pipeline extension and stands out for its wind-blown sand accumulation. PVGC is working in partnership with the City of Palos Verdes Estates and West Basin Municipal Water District, with help from the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, to remove non-native species and reintroduce native riparian and scrub vegetation, which will enhance biodiversity and improve the aesthetics of the area. This Project, in line with the Club’s broader sustainability goals, includes monitoring new plantings and providing temporary . irrigation when necessary to ensure their long-term survival.

In addition to the Habitat Restoration Project, the Solar Initiative, approved by the Palos Verdes Estates City Council on September 26, 2023, is another key component of PVGC’s sustainability efforts.

This Project aims to provide renewable energy for the Club’s future while significantly reducing energy costs. The solar system is designed to meet 92% of the Club’s current annual electrical needs, with solar arrays installed at three main locations: the upper and lower main parking lots, the Maintenance Building, and at The Driving Range.

Additionally, battery storage will be incorporated at the Clubhouse, enhancing energy efficiency and reliability. Looking ahead, the Solar Initiative also includes the potential installation of electric vehicle charging stations, further demonstrating PVGC’s commitment to a sustainable future.

Both the Habitat Restoration Plan and the Solar Initiative highlight Palos Verdes Golf Club’s dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.

The Palos Verdes Recycled Water Pipeline Project Palos Verdes Golf Club is renowned for its stunning views and beauty, but like all golf courses, it requires water. Through the years, a dedicated team has worked to ensure the Course’s sustainability. The Board of Directors empowered long-time and former Course Superintendent, Pat Gradoville, with key project advocate Tom Mehlberg, to pursue a sustainable water source for PVGC. A cornerstone of this effort has been the implementation of a comprehensive Irrigation Project and a successful partnership with Cal Water and West Basin for a recycled water program that will be critical in maintaining the Course’s existence while conserving resources and securing its future water supply.

In Southern California, where droughts and water conservation are constant concerns, ensuring a sustainable water supply has been the number one priority for PVGC. The forward-thinking leadership of the Board of Directors guided the Club to reduce its turf footprint and, most importantly, establish long-term plans for water sustainability.

The Irrigation Project, after years of investigation and research, launched in 2014 and was a key part of this vision. Its goal was straightforward: assure a water supply, reduce water waste, and increase efficiency to maintain the Course in top condition while adhering to strict conservation standards. The upgrades included modernizing the sprinkler system and installing a new electrical panel to better manage water distribution.

The partnership with Cal Water and West Basin was vital to making this vision a reality. PVGC will now benefit from a recycled water plan to guarantee its irrigation needs can be met. This effort was driven by the collaborative work of many key contributors, including Tom Mehlberg, Mark Fitzpatrick, Greg Spiker, Steve Manriquez, Pat Gradoville, and David Stocke, whose dedication was instrumental in bringing the Project to fruition. The Palos Verdes Recycled Water Pipeline Project consists of the installation of 3.5 miles of new recycled water pipeline and a booster pump station that will bring recycled water to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This Project, which launched in July 2023, includes a 3.5-mile pipeline and a booster pump station. Upon its expected completion in July 2025, the Project will deliver approximately 80 million gallons of recycled water annually to seven new locations, including the Golf Course, with a direct pipeline to PVGC. Throughout this process, the Board of Directors, the PVGC Management Team, and the key contributors have supported these initiatives, understanding that the long-term health of the Course depends on sustainable water. Their leadership and dedication have ensured that PVGC continues to thrive while contributing to regional conservation efforts. The Palos Verdes Recycled Water Pipeline Project is a significant accomplishment, guaranteeing water for Palos Verdes Golf Course.

A golf course cannot thrive without a reliable water source. Reaching this milestone took years of effort, coordination, and investment, ensuring the Course’s sustainability for generations to come.

Giving Back The PVGC Scholarship Foundation, established in 2006, has significantly impacted the lives of Palos Verdes Golf Club employees and their families through its educational reimbursement program. This initiative supports employees and their children in pursuing education at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools. The Scholarship Committee grants awards based on established criteria.

Funded by contributions from PVGC Members, the program operates through a voluntary contribution system, with each Member family encouraged to participate. Managed by the Palos Verdes Golf Club Scholarship Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) Charitable Trust in California, the Foundation’s Board, comprising five PVGC Members, oversees the assets and necessary reporting. Currently chaired by Robert Parke and Co-Chair Helaine Lopes, the Foundation ensures the program’s smooth and successful operation.

Each year, Club Members volunteer for the Scholarship Committee, working alongside the Foundation Board to administer the program and interview applicants.

This collaboration ensures that scholarships are awarded to deserving employees and their children attending accredited educational institutions. Recipients have gone on to attend prestigious schools such as: the University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles, UC Irvine, UC Davis, California Lutheran University, Loyola Marymount University, Georgetown University, Pennsylvania State University, Texas Christian University, the University of Michigan, and other California State University campuses (including Long Beach, Northridge, and Fullerton), as well as local institutions like El Camino College and Los Angeles Harbor College.

The program not only aids in career development but also boosts employee morale and loyalty. It serves as a valuable recruitment tool, highlighting the Club’s commitment to the growth and well-being of its employees and their families.

The Foundation’s impact is evident as it provides employees and their children with opportunities for higher education that might otherwise be unattainable. This support fosters a positive work environment and demonstrates the Club’s dedication to giving back to its staff and local community.

The bulk of the Foundation’s funding comes from the generous giving of Club Members. These contributions are crucial in maintaining and expanding the program’s reach, ensuring that more employees and their families can benefit from this incredible Foundation.

Jill Sanders Photography Jill Sanders is a true PV local. She was raised by her grandparents, Dick and Patty Meine, and spent her formative years living across the street from the club on Via Campesina.

Her grandfather was a member for over 40 years. Jill’s photographs in our centennial book are an act of love and dedication to her grandparents.

Sanders attended Chadwick school and later earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography from Parson’s School of Design in NYC. Her love of photography has been a part of her being since she was a young child. It was never a question of whether or not she was an artist.

At the age of 28, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

One of her grandfather’s friends from the club referred her to the neurosurgeon who saved her life. She learned the lesson of networking and relying on dear members who all help each other out with their knowledge and expertise. She is forever grateful.

Specializing in fine art landscape photography, Sanders uses her meditative focus to embrace the world’s stillness.

Her photography has garnered numerous awards and hangs worldwide in many personal, commercial and retail installations. The Jill Sanders Gallery was a prominent venue in the Rivera Village for ten years and was voted best Art gallery of the South Bay for the past four consecutive years.

Jill and her husband Graham travel extensively to capture nature’s beauty. She seeks cloudscapes and dramatic light to create timeless images.

The images presented here in the PVGC Centennial book were created solely for our club. Jill spent the past year on the course capturing prime light and perfect conditions. Her goal was to share the inherent beauty that we are all grateful for everytime we step onto the green. She hopes that members will treasure this book and pass down to their children the appreciation of nature that PVGC so greatly provides.

Associate Photographer Bill Peters Bill is a landscape photographer who has called the South Bay of Los Angeles his home for more than 30 years. His passion for photography started in high school when he picked up his first SLR camera, a Canon A-1, to learn black and white photography. While he’s spent most of his professional career practicing law as a partner with a global law firm specializing in complex technology and commercial transactions, Bill has always found time to pursue his passion for photography and hone his skills capturing the beauty and magic of the South Bay, from the cliffs of Palos Verdes to the beaches of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach.

Before moving to Los Angeles to attend UCLA and Loyola Law School, Bill grew up as a diplomatic “brat”, the son of a foreign service officer, moving from country to country with his family. This experience gave him the opportunity to live in Nigeria, Bolivia, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), Honduras and Ecuador where he developed a deep appreciation for nature and outdoor adventure. Bill is always looking for opportunities to combine his love for the outdoors and his passion for photography.

Bill currently lives in Palos Verdes Estates with his wife, Amy, and four children – Matthew, Natalie, Benjamin and Ryan.
