Packaging With Purpose - Why is packaging essential for food and beverages?

Packaging’s essential role in preventing food waste

n the European Union, around Iwaste 88 million tonnes of food are generated annually

with associated costs of 143 billion euros [1]. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization warns that one third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted. Food loss happens along the entire value chain, during production, in retail, at eating establishments and at home, with significant negative environmental, social, and economic impacts. It represents a missed opportunity to feed the growing world population, a major waste of valuable

limited natural resources and a needless source of greenhouse gas emissions that impacts climate change. Wasting food also means wasting resources and efforts put into improving the sustainability of food production.

Why packaging?

•

High performance packaging solutions and technologies can preserve food safety by minimising sources of contamination and reduce food waste from spoilage.

As an example, the use of

aseptic packages, which are designed to protect the foodstuff from the effects of light and oxygen, do not require refrigeration, and have a shelf life of 6 to 12 months.

Innovative packaging designs also help consumers buy and use food in portions that match their needs and reduce food waste from leftovers.

Smart food packaging, equipped with sensors or radio frequency identification technologies, enable to

monitor the safety and quality of foodstuffs and allow improvements in supply chain logistics and management.

Packaging also prevents waste of raw materials and natural resources that went into growing or making goods and the energy used to transport them from the producer to the retailer; ensuring the safe delivery of products to European consumers.

As also recognised in a recent opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee: “Looking at packaging alone might have a negative impact on the regulatory system. In reality, the packaging used to preserve things usually represents significantly less resources and has a far lower intrinsic value than the product it is protecting. For example, in the food business, 30% of all food produced worldwide is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain: as a result, product loss due to poor packing is likely to have far more negative environmental consequences.

Improved packaging might be one approach to minimise this food loss rate.” [2] From a production standpoint, it should also be recalled that food waste has at least ten times the environmental impact of packaging waste, and that even without taking into account of the impact of methane from decayed food.

Preventing avoidable product losses and food waste is a key priority for EUROPEN, the European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment, and its members and forms an important part of delivering a circular economy. EUROPEN members are continuously innovating to deliver on their sustainability commitments, while preserving the integrity and safety of the products for citizens and businesses.

They are developing optimal

packaging solutions preventing resource depletion, product and food waste and packaging entering the environment. They are also driving the uptake of innovative packaging design for increased reuse and recycling and contributing to the development of new sorting, collection and recycling technologies.

F&B packaging in Mixed feelings: European consumers embrace reusable packaging but hygiene concerns linger Stora Enso’s recent consumer study on reusable packaging in Europe found that while 77% of consumers express positivity toward it, cleanliness concerns dampen enthusiasm, with 78% having reservations.

Moreover, only 30% have a clear understanding of reusable packaging. Hygiene issues are a significant factor, with 78% of respondents worried about product cleanliness in reusable containers. Additionally, 22% believe returning such packaging requires too much effort, potentially impeding widespread adoption. The

survey, encompassing over 7,000 consumers across Europe, highlights the need for better consumer education and addressing hygiene and convenience concerns.

Aldi launches in-store refill pilot with UK Refill Coalition The UK Refill Coalition is launching its debut in-store pilot at Aldi’s Solihull store, introducing reusable bulk vessels for scalable refills. This initiative offers affordable refill options for essential food staples like cereals and pasta, as well as various household products.

The Coalition, consisting of Aldi UK, Ocado Retail, and CHEP, initiated this project in 2020 with

support from GoUnpackaged.

They’ve partnered with global manufacturers and receive funding from the UKRI’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge fund. The system replaces conventional bulk dispensers with reusable vessels at a dedicated refill station, promoting eco-conscious and economical choices for consumers by reducing singleuse plastic packs.

KitKat unveils wrappers with 90% recycled plastic in Australia KitKat makes Australian history by elevating the recycled plastic content in select product wrappers to an impressive 90%

Damm, a Spanish brewing company with a 145-year history, recently partnered with Macsa id to enhance its production process. Damm, a multinational corporation, needed batch coding and expiry date labeling on its beer bottles. Macsa id provided the solution by installing two LASER KIP 1110 110WPLUS UHS CO2 lasers for coding returnable containers on labels.

These lasers, operating at a capacity of 63,000 bottles/hour, were integrated into the labeling process, offering flexibility based on the container format. These CO2 technology printers are ideal for high-speed coding, adapt to different materials, and promote sustainability by eliminating the need for consumables like inks or solvents.

Industry experts develop ‘world’s lightest’ pizza box Metsä Board, in collaboration with industry experts, has developed the ‘world’s lightest’ pizza box.

This innovative project brought together Metsä Board, Futupack for visual design, and Adara Pakkaus for manufacturing.

Their goal was to create an ecofriendly, lightweight pizza box with superior performance and print quality, while minimizing material and ink usage. Metsä Board provided the lightweight, uncoated white kraftliner substrate that is compatible with different printing techniques and ranges from 70-160 g/m² in basis weight, offering versatility for diverse printing requirements.

TerraCycle’s spook-tacular solution for recycling halloween packaging Get ready for a greener Halloween with TerraCycle! Their limitedtime Halloween Treat Wrappers Zero Waste Box and Pouch make recycling sweet packaging easy.

Halloween creates tons of nonrecyclable plastic waste, with over $3.1 billion spent on sweets in the US. TerraCycle offers a solution: buy the Box or Pouch to recycle flexible sweet packaging and wrappers not accepted in regular recycling. Once full, use the prepaid label to return it. TerraCycle transforms the materials into plastic pellets for new sustainable products, making recycling a treat for everyone.

A&W Canada initiates nationwide exchangeable cup programme A&W Canada’s ‘A&W One Cup’ revolutionizes the quick-service restaurant sector with a circular approach. Customers can buy a One Cup for $3, enjoy their beverage, and return the cup on their next visit to get a clean one plus a 20-cent discount.

This initiative fights the over billion single-use cups thrown away annually in Canada. A&W extends its reusable dishware concept to help cut cup waste without burdening customers with cleaning. The program has already saved over 55,000 cups from landfills since the pilot launch and expects to reach millions in its first year of nationwide expansion.

Artisan master baker selects label verification data master Leicestershire craft bakery, Geary’s, partnering with JentonDimaco, has upgraded its labelling verification process to cope with its rapid expansion and varying packaging needs. small batch production and the multiple product changeovers each day. It eliminated manual verification checks and streamlined the process, reducing paperwork, and archiving. It ensures that every product’s label matches the work order, reducing human errors and contributing to sustainability.

Snap2Go: innovative fully recyclable food-to-go packaging solution Sabert Corporation Europe introduces Snap2Go, an innovative, fully recyclable solution for food-to-go businesses. This multifunctional tray comes with a snug clip-lid, making it suitable for various food-to-go applications. It’s stackable, nestable, and easy for operators to use. The snugfitting anti-fog rPET clip-lid locks securely with a simple push and click, while the leak, moisture, and grease-resistant design ensures convenience for consumers. Snap2Go is available in four sizes and can be customized with logos and messages. It’s fully recyclable, featuring sustainability messaging, and is made from recyclable board and highgrade, post-consumer PET bottle flakes.

Uber Eats trials reusable takeaway packaging in London Uber Eats is running a trial in central London in partnership with sustainable packaging company Again. The trial, initiated earlier this year, tests the use of reusable bags and containers for food deliveries.

Again is launching advanced cleaning facilities known as ‘CleanCells’ to manage sorting, cleaning, and redistributing reusable packaging. Selected Uber Eats users around Camberwell can opt-in for reusable packaging, which they need to rinse and set out for collection after use. Couriers will transport the packaging to CleanCells for cleaning and return it to restaurants.

NYC mandates reusable food containers in fastfood establishments New York City officials have introduced the ‘Choose To Reuse’ bill, which mandates fast-food establishments to use reusable containers. Proposed

by City Council members and with support from Manhattan Borough president Mark Levine, the bill forbids food service establishments from offering nonreusable utensils or containers to dine-in customers unless requested. It also requires fastfood places to provide returnable food packaging and establish a return system. Failure to comply with the bill will lead to civil penalties.

Action on Sugar calls for removal of child-targeted packaging from products Action on Sugar’s research at Queen Mary University of London reveals concerning findings.

Child-friendly packaging of breakfast cereals and yogurts contains excessive sugar levels, with some products having up to four teaspoons per serving.

Sugar content in these products reduced by 14.9% and 13.5% in cereals and yogurts, respectively, from 2015 to 2020, falling short of the 20% target. Only a few cereals (nine) and yogurts (six) had low sugar content, with only four cereals having low sugar and salt levels.

Experts recommend removing child-targeted packaging from high-sugar, salt, or fat products.

Plastic risk in frozen berry packages: Finnish Food Authority’s warning The Finnish Food Authority has issued a cautionary notice due to plastic particles found in frozen berry packages. These particles are believed to come from the strawberry harvesting boxes and have affected various brand names like Pirkka, Menu, Marjex, and Lidl, sold nationwide.

The recall includes frozen berry products, mainly strawberries, with best-by dates in spring or summer 2025. The Food Authority is actively addressing the issue to maintain food safety standards and protect consumers’ wellbeing.

Pot Noodle trials switching iconic plastic pot to paper Pot Noodle is launching a trial to replace its plastic pot with an FSC certified paper pot, starting with 500,000 Chicken and Mushroom flavour pots exclusively at Tesco stores. Over three years, Unilever reduced plastic use while maintaining the pot’s shape and quality.

Shopper feedback will guide further adoption at the Pot Noodle factory, with new production capabilities shifting from plastic to paper-based manufacturing for the trial.

including packaging of food stuff. Craemer, with over 60 years of experience in plastics processing, has developed the HB3, a pallet box entirely made of food-safe polyethylene (PE): hygienic, robust, ideal for this sector.

The almost invisible contourmilled welding seam, the clean and clear lines, the minimal ribbing and the rounded shape also contribute to this.

Uncompromised labelling

A new generation of wet-glue labellers takes over the brewing industry

D

elicately spiced, aromatic, full-bodied and with an elegant finish - this flavour experience is savoured by beer fans of Privatbrauerei Eibau’s Schwarzbier (black beer).

Established in the year 1810, it was the first rural brewery in the Zittau region of Saxony and gained recognition throughout Germany primarily thanks to its “big black” - Eibauer Schwarzbier. Today, Eibau offers beer lovers all over the world considerably more than just Schwarzbier. In addition to the mildly hopped Jubiläums Pilsner 1810, the refreshing, light country-style beer and the sweet, aromatic Lausitz Dunkel, they

also brew unfiltered light and dark Zwick’l beers. Wheat beer lovers can also find something to tickle their tastebuds.

Depending on the season, the private brewery expands its product range to include bock beers, shandies or the refreshing SummerMint and SummerCoco editions.

The new generation of pre-modular labellers The beers from Brauerei Eibau are optimally packed and presented in the familiar longneck bottles. You can select from a range of different sizes (0.25 litre, 0.33 litre and 0.5 litre), depending on your level

of thirst. Only a few select beers are additionally filled in a 0.5 litre NRW bottle. For perfect product labelling, the brewery has been putting its trust in the Bavarian labeller manufacturer Gernep for over 25 years. “The labeller always worked reliably and handled innumerable bottles. But when we heard that Gernep had developed a new machine type perfectly tailored to the brewing industry, we wanted to invest in a new labeller,” Julia Böhmer, Managing Director, explained.

Just like the previous model, the Gernep Labetta 4/4/12 720 2A is equipped with two wet-glue labelling stations and applies body, back, shoulder and neckaround labels with precision to

four different bottle sizes. Gernep service engineers were on site for the machine commissioning process and to introduce the experienced engineers, operators and master brewers to the machine’s technical innovations.

The new labeller generation is designed to achieve the highest flexibility; the reason for this is the pre-modular machine concept.

Thanks to flexible mounting devices around the labeller, the labelling stations can be installed just five centimetres away, if the customer requires it, to ensure exact labelling and a custom-fit integration in the existing production line. This new machine design allows Gernep to comply with customer requirements in the best possible manner while also achieving a

form of series manufacture for its own production. The focus of the development was not only an improved level of usability for the operator but also on optimised cleaning options through the “clean design”. Thanks to the closed housing surrounding the labelling station, all cables are securely stowed away and the exterior of the wet-glue labelling stations is easy to clean. The round design and innovative guards mean the labelling stations can be arranged so that the automatic gluing process can also be adjusted while production is in progress. The labelling stations are precisely adjusted at the side of the machine table using handwheels and number displays. As a result, it was possible to omit the complicated carriage systems from underneath the labelling station. The Privatbrauerei Eibau labeller is equipped with a total of two wet-glue labelling stations from the new 207 generation which ensures the highest labelling accuracy with its unique simulated cam control.

In 2019, Gernep developed the cam calculation in collaboration with Krones AG. The glue pallets have a fixed basic setting (glue pattern) which is achieved with the glue roller and ensures that each change-over is reproducible without the need for readjustments. The pallets are manufactured with extreme precision in accordance with Krones standards and impress with their low-wear rubber composition.

Quality assurance and traceability play an extremely important role, particularly in the food and beverage industry.

With this in mind, variable data such as best-before dates and batch identification codes are set directly on the labelling station and printed on the back label of Eibau beers with an ink-jet printer. To ensure that all the labels have actually been applied to the bottles by the end of the labelling process, sensors check the bottles for the presence of all the labels stored in the type memory.

Ton’s take: An expert’s insights into F&B packaging his is my 2nd contribution T to this very interesting digital magazine.

In my 1st contribution I spoke about sustainable packaging in existing operations and what kind of challenges this was giving the processing industry. The key theme here was that if you do what you did, you’ll get what you got. In other words, if we don’t look at all aspects of packing products and not merely use a new more sustainable substrate, the output and the quality of the packed product will suffer and as a consequence, the drive towards more sustainable packaging will eventually fail, because there is no justifiable business model.

I also mentioned how flexible packaging was gaining more

ground, due to many valid and logical reasons. Over the last 25 years the annual consumption of stand-up pouches in Europe grew from 2,5 Bn pcs more than 20 times to well over 50 Bn pcs. One of the key drivers for this phenomenal growth is the Packaging-to-Product-Ratio.

Just take this real life example: you have a flexible pack with a product content of 200 grams and the flexible pack weighs 4 grams, the Packaging-toProduct-Ratio is 2%. Try this with a metal can or a glass jar and you’ll get completely different ratios. Obviously, this has a huge impact on the carbon footprint of the total product.

Certain products will stick to rigid packaging for marketing reasons, such as expensive gifts (whisky or jewellery) or for reasons of stability, such as

Pringles or biscuits. For many other products, the advantages of flexible packaging (costs, convenience, logistics and sustainability) outweigh the perceived lesser value image of a refill pack.

Food & beverage packaging Let’s focus on the largest category in packaging; food & beverage (F&B) packaging.

The percentages differ, but it’s safe to state that the vast majority of packaging is used for F&B. The consuming habits of the average (western) consumer have changed dramatically over the last decades. Not that long ago, the consumer shopped 3-4 times per week and purchased their requirements for that day

the Carbon footprint. If we take a multilayer plastic tray with a plastic film lid for a meat product the carbon footprint split for this product is <5% packaging and >95% meat. Just to put things in perspective. With the recyclable mono-materials coming into the market and reduced material weights (flow wraps vs trays), this would improve dramatically.

and the next. Big supermarkets were slowly appearing on the horizon, but my mothers’ shopping routine included a visit to the greengrocer, the baker and the butcher.

Certain products were quite premium, such as meat and not so much commoditized as in todays’ supermarkets. Even taking inflation into consideration, certain products have become significantly more affordable for larger groups of consumers compared to say the 1980’s.

Certain products (milk) were often home delivered.

The other major change compared to previous generations is that it was common then to have a single income family, which left the housewife (apologies for this generalization) with plenty of time to buy the groceries and prepare a meal from scratch, so without all the pre-made mixes and pre-cut products.

In the ‘70’s the average time to cook a meal was about 1 hour/ day. Recent studies have shown that this is now less than 20 minutes/day.

You don’t need to be a genius to figure out the consequences of all this.

Doing a daily round to the baker, greengrocer and butcher changed to a weekly visit to a massive supermarket, where you load up your trolley with products for the entire week or longer.

added to more convenience for the consumer.

In the 70’s milk needed a shelf life of a few days, so this was packed in a heavy weight returnable bottle with an aluminum lid. The butcher would expect his customers to eat the meat that same evening or latest tomorrow, so he wrapped it in a piece of paper.

Todays’ milk packs have a shelf life of well over a week and most consumers leave a meat tray with a limited shelf life behind and pick up the one with at least one week’s shelf life.

This places a large responsibility on the packaging, as this needs to deliver these expected shelf lives.

Longer shelf lives require high barrier packaging, which is usually made from multilayer laminated materials. These barrier materials provide protection against oxygen and moisture for example.

The average consumer wants to do their bit and contribute with more sustainable products.

Unfortunately, the discussions about sustainable packaging quite often are emotion driven and less fact-based. Also, there’s a lot of greenwashing adding to this confusion. And finally, there is the so called “Say-DoGap”. Especially in the current economy, consumers, who want to do the right thing, often vote with their wallet leave the slightly more expensive sustainable product and opt for the cheapest one. Perhaps some true pricing (when all the hidden costs to our eco system are added) would help here, which means that all the costs for the product are taken into account.

I’m just a packaging boomer, so to provide some real life experience from the world of the brand owners behind the Consumer Packaged Goods, or as we all know them, the companies putting the tomatoes, cocoa or meat in the supermarkets, I reached out to someone with lots of experience in Food & Beverage packaging.

Unfortunately, these multilayer laminates are very difficult to recycle, which has led to a huge drive towards more monomaterials. These mono-materials not always provide the same barrier as the old laminates, but progress is being made to make them comparable. However, processability of these new monomaterials quite often is still a challenge. Obviously, there needs to be a constant evaluation of required shelf lives, as quite often these are grossly “overspecced”.

I spoke with Ron van Hilst, who has a large experience in food packaging. He worked for many years in various packaging development roles for multinationals, such as Unilever, Friesland-Campina, Kraft-Heinz and since about 7 years for Cargill. Ron has worked on many packaging innovations, which are still around on many retail shelves throughout the world.

As stated in the introduction, the Packaging-to-Product-Ratio needs to be looked at, but so does

Ton: “Ron, can you name some of the packaging innovations you worked on?”

Here’s the interview I had with him.

Over the last couple of years I have been working on several type of innovations. This is from a tamper evident label for peanut butter to a non-spill spout for children’s drinks. All focused on the increase of functionality or supply chain improvements or cost savings. The last couple of years you see, at Cargill, an increased focus on sustainability types of innovations. For me this goes for changing from an easyopening can, for tomato paste, to a re-closable plastic cup (see picture top left). This change has led to a decrease of the carbon foot print and transport significantly. The good add-on was that consumers now use the used cups for a second purpose like storing buttons, plants, etc.

Another interesting innovation was a project where we moved from a square PET bottle to a square-round bottle (see picture top right). With this change we could reduce the weight by about 20% with also a stronger bottle.

This has also led to a change from 24 bottles in a corrugated box into bottles in a shrink film.

This also improved the carbon footprint significantly.

Ton: “Do you agree that the requirements for F&B packaging are totally different now vs., let’s say in the 1980’s?”

I agree with this 100% Ton! I have seen this not only with Cargill but also the companies I worked for before are going the same route.

Ton: “In your opinion as a seasoned packaging innovator,

is the majority of laminate structures replaceable by mono-materials?”

This depends! IF you want to keep the same barrier requirements, then the answer is NO! However, and that is also what we do, review the cycle time of your products! Most probably the shelf life is historically based on e.g. cans. So 24 months. However if the cycle time is about 6 months a shelf life of e.g. 9 months can be enough. This will enable a monomaterial. This will create a double win since it will be less expensive AND is recyclable and thus better for the environment!

Ton: “Would you agree that there are still products out there which have “overspecced” packaging because of outdated shelve life ideas?”

As mentioned above yes I do.

On top of this over-specifying is NOT only for shelf life. I can give you also an example for corrugated boxes! Quite often these are designed for the worse case. However the likelihood of the worse case is very low.

So we started to measure the

circumstances our packs are facing during transport. Based on that we choose the pack quality which is applicable for 85% of our circumstances!

Ton: “What sort of interesting F&B packaging trends have you seen lately?”

I really like the trend to re-usable & refillable pack formats! This also an example of a win-win opportunity. A lot has to be developed and tested but, in my view, this will be an important change in the (near) future. The post of Fyllar, earlier at LinkedIn, of a trial in Amsterdam region for Lidl is really interesting.

Ton: “Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and providing us some insights in the F&B packaging.”

It was a pleasure! Always good, nice and useful to have these type of discussions and knowledge sharing with other packaging experts. We all face the same challenges so….we only can solve this if we help each other. In my view.

A collaboration for accurate and efficient weighing and packing of a new organic snack carrot variant

DanRoots selected Newtec’s weighing and packing solution to optimise production in a sustainable way. ewtec’s innovative weighing N solutions offer reliability and efficiency of production for

customers in the food industry.

With its focus on establishing long-lasting trust with customers globally, the company helps manufacturers optimise production through easy-to-use and durable weighing, sorting and packing equipment that offers product sustainability, minimises giveaway, and converts produce into highly competitive high-end products.

An interesting case study is Newtec’ cooperation with

DanRoots, a family-run company with a domestic and international vegetable production presence whose products include carrots, beetroot, parsnips and parsley roots. The company, which is one of Denmark’s largest root vegetable growers, supplies their products in a variety of leading Danish supermarkets, as well as in Europe. To optimise production in a sustainable way, DanRoots selected Newtec’s weighing and packing solution for their snack carrots in 500g and 200g bags - a new organic variant on the market with a 100% recyclable packaging.

Newtec’s weighing machine for sustainable production DanRoots’ new weighing/ packing line consists of Newtec’s weighing machine, model 4015B2, which is ideal for accurate weighing of smaller portions and two efficient RedPack packing machines for packing the snack carrots in recyclable bags of 200g according to DanRoots’s request.

The complete line delivers a total capacity of 80 bags/min. With 40 bags/min on each Redpack

packing machine, speed in packing is achieved while gently sustaining the stand-out qualities of DanRoots’ carrots, especially since the company has been focusing on green practices and ecology.

Three years ago, DanRoots got the IFS (International Food Standard) Certification, which focuses on food safety and quality and attests to the meticulous attention the company gives to the whole production process and its end products as far as sustainability and food quality is concerned. Criteria for the certification include governance and commitment, food safety and management practices, operational and resource management success, analysis improvements, as well as food defence planning, all of which place DanRoots ahead in its sustainability and high-quality standards initiative.

Lone Kondrup, Project Director, said: “Today all our cultivation is conducted with careful consideration for the environment, paying close attention to food safety, control and traceability. As a result, all our products have been awarded the international certification for food, IFS.” To obtain a more sustainable packaging, the foil consumption on the RedPack packing machines has been adjusted so that only the amount of foil that exactly covers the carrots is used. There is no waste in the form of a “snip” or too large a bag. Furthermore, a 200 gram

pack ensures less food waste.

Excess carrots, e.g. sorted due to length or shape, are used in the “STOP FOOD WASTE” bag.

By minimising waste, offering precision of portion size while reducing energy consumption without compromising product quality, the Newtec weighing/ packing solution upholds Danroots’ green initiatives.

When asked about attaining sustainability in the vegetable business, DanRoots replied: “We use less energy consumption with Newtec’s new weighing/packing line’ while better food quality is ensured by not damaging the product. With an accurate weight, you avoid overweight and underweight.

Reducing overweight provides better utilisation of our production volumes. Reducing underweight signals good quality and a consistent product.”

As speed and weighing processes are tailored to the portion requirements and the kind of produce the company focuses on, waste and cost are reduced while the quality of the end-result is improved.

Automation and reduction of labour for high-quality food weighing and packing A key factor in optimising production levels in a sustainable manner is the level of automation and manufacturing specifications of Newtec’s machines. These solutions are designed using

stainless steel constructions and are renowned for their durability and accuracy through their automated and user-friendly technology that reduces reliance on human labour.

According to DanRoots: “The biggest optimisation we have experienced when installing the weighing/packing solution, is reduction of labour. It is at times difficult to acquire the right skills / employees and a weighing/packing line, with great automation, will require fewer employees. Our new investment in Newtec’s weighing/packing solution for our snack carrots is a strategic decision. We expect a quick return on investment and to be repaid in goodwill and optimisation. A packing line, with many people having to carry out manual packing and sorting, is far too space-consuming and “vulnerable”. Partly the quality varies and partly there is too much dependence on attendance etc.”

Lone Kondrup added: “By reducing the possibility of human error and the reliance on manual labour, our new weighing/ packing line from Newtec helps preserve the quality of the product and ensure production is at the highest level with minimum giveaway rates. This means less waste in terms of product, energy, and cost.”

The optical sorting is better and much faster compared to the performance of an employee (manual labour). Without optical sorting, the quality would fluctuate too much.

This will affect the food quality and customers will question DanRoots as a supplier.”

Upgrading existing layouts often feels like adding pieces to an already complex puzzle. Moving parts around, replacing old equipment and sometimes adding complete new functionalities with the aim of increasing production. However, adding a third dimension to the mix and using the vertical space in a building opens up untapped potential.

The customer in this project wanted to put the bundling machine on an overhead plateau.

A flow office cream pints goes upwards, through the bundler, and back down again for the next step. This way, they didn’t have to re-arrange any of the machines that were already there.

The most essential characteristics of the lifts or elevators that would have to transport the products up and down were an absolute minimal footprint, low maintenance requirements, and being able to withstand a washdown environment.
