FACHPACK 2024: Nuremberg plays host to Europe’s packaging industry

From 24 to 26 September 2024, the European packaging sector will once again gather at FACHPACK, the trade fair for packaging, technology and processes.

The more than 1,400 exhibitors at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg will showcase packaging materials and accessories, packaging machines and technology as well as the key processes for automation, marking and labelling, packaging printing and intra-logistics. The main theme of FACHPACK this year is “Transition in Packaging”, which aptly describes the changes currently taking place in the industry that will also be reflected in the 11 exhibition halls and high-calibre supporting programme.

Visitors from the consumer and industrial goods segments can look forward to an extensive programme of presentations in the PACKBOX, INNOVATIONBOX and SOLPACK 5.0 forums as well as interesting special shows and awards ceremonies.

FACHPACK 2024 at the heart of Europe

A particularly welcome aspect is that FACHPACK 2024 is positioning itself as a continentwide event. Heike Slotta, Executive Director Exhibitions at NürnbergMesse, says: “Fifty-four percent of the exhibitors are from Germany, the rest from the strong German-speaking economic area and neighbouring countries. Turkey has a particularly strong presence.”

Worth mentioning in this context are the new exhibitors that account for around 20 percent of all exhibitors at FACHPACK 2024. A remarkably high proportion of these – 70 percent – come from countries other than Germany.

Forums on interesting topics provide new impetus in the supporting programme

FACHPACK sees itself as a source of inspiration for the industry. Alongside the extensive

product display, this is also reflected in the programme of presentations in the three forums PACKBOX (Hall 4), INNOVATIONBOX (Hall 2) and SOLPACK 5.0 (Hall 3). All three forums address topical issues affecting the sector, e.g. dealing with the new PPWR regulations, the circular economy, automation and AI, or alternative packaging solutions and new fibre raw materials.

Key partners from the packaging industry are designing the programme for PACKBOX and invite interested participants to listen or join in the discussions. This forum will be moderated by three genuine industry stalwarts: Matthias Mahr from the trade journal LebensmittelPraxis (24./25.9), Dr Johannes Bergmair from Pack Experts and the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) (25.9.), and Oliver Berndt from the German Packaging Institute (dvi) (26.9.). In the INNOVATIONBOX Forum, registered exhibitors will introduce their new products and process innovations in a series of concise presentations. Popular

moderators Nina Schönrock and Petra Bindl will host the programme. The SOLPACK 5.0 Forum is devoted to sustainable packaging solutions and will be conducted and moderated by Peter Desiléts and Volker Muche, managing directors of packaging design agency Pacoon GmbH.

Gathering for the industry offers three days of networking at its finest

In keeping with its slogan “We create the future”, FACHPACK offers the ideal platform for networking. A new feature in this context is the networking event Women4Packaging for women in the packaging industry which will be held on the first day of the fair (24.9., NCC Mitte). It offers female players in the sector a unique opportunity to network at the venue, inspire one another, and discuss the latest topics and trends in the packaging industry. The whole event takes place in a relaxed atmosphere. The highlight will be the keynote address by Vera Strauch, founder of the Female Leadership Academy and expert on feminist leadership.

Likewise on the first day of the fair, a total of 41 winners of the most prestigious European showcase for packaging excellence, the German Packaging Award, will be invited to take their places on the stage. Almost 250 submissions from 13 countries were received for consideration by the jury. The German Packaging Award is presented by the German Packaging Institute (dvi) and the winners in ten categories will be announced from 16.30 onwards in the Munich Room in NCC Mitte. As a premium partner, FACHPACK presents a special award for young talent. This accolade honours the best packaging concepts by school and university students and trainees.

The STUDENTS DAY on the third day of the fair (26.9.) brings companies and young packaging talent together. At the invitation of FACHPACK and

the German Packaging Institute (dvi), more than 60 students from the German-speaking regions will take part in workshops with professionals from up to 10 packaging companies and brand owners. A lively discussion on the requirements of the future and concrete work in the packaging industry is guaranteed. Participants can also look forward to a dedicated FACHPACK Students’ Tour (which can be found on the interactive floor plan on the website) and a casual “Meet & Greet” session.

On all three days of the fair, FACHPACK TV will also be broadcasting live from the Exhibition Centre, with packaging journal presenters Julia Paul and Jan Malte Andresen reporting from the “glass studio” in Hall 4. The team from Germany’s leading packaging trade journal will present conversations, interviews, panels and presentations on the topic of packaging, as well as news and trends directly from the exhibition floors. And what is more, FACHPACK visitors are very welcome to come along and see for themselves how television is made. All content will be streamed on social media and can be downloaded afterwards from an online media library.

Alternative packaging solutions and innovative newcomers

This year, FACHPACK is introducing an inspiring programme feature: the “Alternative Packaging Solutions Pavilion”, which will showcase examples of alternatives for commonly used materials and provide insights into what might be possible in the future. At the fully booked pavilion in Hall 3, 13 companies will present their solutions including compostable plastic bags and teabags, upholstery material made from grain husks, packaging made from sugar cane (bagasse) and a whole lot more. The SOLPACK 5.0 Forum is also part of this pavilion. On all three days of the fair, visitors can enjoy a diverse programme and interesting presentations. A

total of 35 packaging experts and exhibitors from this pavilion will conduct short presentations.

Anyone looking for fresh, unconventional ideas and products to resolve packaging issues will find them again this year among the start-ups of the packaging segment in Hall 2. Here, visitors can look forward to the “Young Innovators” pavilion for innovative young companies which is subsidised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). In addition, the “Newcomer Pavilion” gives FACHPACK debutants or international newcomers a platform for presenting their companies and innovative products to a professional audience. Naturally, FACHPACK 2024 would not be complete without the popular “Labels & More” pavilion in Hall 3A.

Good packaging design on display in special show “Outside the Box”

Anyone interested in packaging design should swing by the special design show “Outside the Box” in Hall 4. Curated by bayern design on behalf of FACHPACK, it maps the drafting and design journey from the initial idea through to good packaging design and provides valuable insights into the impact of design in development processes. It also explores how designers, as creative partners in the development process, find solutions to satisfy technical, ecological and economic requirements for packaging. Using unusual exhibits such as innovative packaging for fitted sheets or a reusable system for household products like detergents or soap, it presents design processes that enhance the circularity of packaging, make the brands behind the products more accessible, and foster identification and awareness among customers and users. Innovative. Creative. Individual. We are specialised in food packaging.

IIC Packaging is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of customised and environmentally friendly food packaging supplying the FMCG industry.

The Freiburg-based company with sales offices in the UK, Australia and Hong Kong has been developing customised thermoformed and IML injection moulded sustainable food packaging for all major sectors of the food industry for almost 30 years.

Dirk Wohlgemuth, Director of Sales & Marketing, talks here about his role in the company, innovations and sustainable solutions that the packaging industry is currently facing and will face in the near future.

Dirk Wohlgemuth moved to the UK 20 years ago to support the sales and distribution of IIC products in the UK and Australia. As sales manager, Dirk always looks out into the world to identify new trends at an early stage and implement innovative solutions. His focus is on the careful use of

resources, scrutinising existing processes and driving innovation with the result of packaging of the best possible quality.

Of course, sustainability is a crucial issue for the packaging industry and is at the centre of IIC’s values, as Dirk emphasises:

“As a manufacturer of 600 million food packages per year for ice cream, dairy products, fruit and vegetables through to delicatessen and confectionery, IIC has already developed over 250 successful packaging

concepts. Every year, we serve renowned food brands and well-known supermarkets. With hundreds of satisfied customers in over 40 countries, we are aware of our ecological responsibility.”

When developing new packaging concepts, particular attention is therefore paid to the principles of reduction, reuse, and recycling as well as the development of new sustainable materials.

This raises the question of how IIC defines sustainability.

“Customised, innovative and the best possible packaging for food that is as durable, economical and ecological as possible,” reports Dirk.

“For example, we work with the innovative IML process (in-mould labelling), a singlestage production process under ideal hygienic conditions. This sophisticated technology combines maximum quality with minimum use of material (plastic).”

In addition to our expertise in IML, we offer thermoforming solutions, which allow for efficient production of lightweight yet durable packaging. This process is particularly advantageous for producing high-quality packaging at a lower cost, while maintaining sustainability. Furthermore, we provide a wide range of carton-based food packaging options and a diverse selection of standard products. For customers with specific

needs, we are also capable of developing tailored packaging solutions to meet individual requirements.

What specific improvements have you recently implemented for your customers?

We have implemented several key improvements for our customers recently. By consolidating orders from multiple suppliers across Europe, we achieved up to 15% cost savings for one customer. We also enhanced logistics efficiency by optimizing packaging design, reducing the need for transport from six lorries to just one. Additionally, through weight reduction and improved packaging geometry, we saved 1,100 tonnes of PP. These changes highlight our ability to deliver sustainable and costeffective solutions tailored to our clients’ needs.

What requirements must the “packaging of the future” meet?

The packaging of the future must have high recyclability and minimal weight to reduce resource consumption. It should be made from mono-materials that are widely available and easily recyclable. Despite these requirements, the packaging must still provide adequate product protection and storage functionality. Additionally, the size of the packaging should be

minimized to avoid deceptive oversized packaging.

The PPWR regulation is in its finalization phase. How is IIC Packaging optimizing its customers’ packaging to ensure a competitive advantage in the future?

We have conducted an indepth analysis of the PPWR regulation, ensuring that our packaging solutions are already

compliant with its requirements. By partnering with us, food manufacturers can access packaging that meets the PPWR standards ahead of time. For those interested, we offer a complimentary initial assessment and provide a free whitepaper to guide them through these regulatory changes.

What trends and innovations are particularly noticeable in the current world of packaging?

“Smart Packaging” is emerging, offering intelligent and enhanced functionalities beyond just packaging. There’s also a shift away from bioplastics, with a greater focus on optimizing existing packaging designs. Concepts like “Design for Recycling” are gaining traction, aiming to make packaging more sustainable and easier to recycle.

Plastic packaging, hybrid packaging, or carton packaging—which is the most sustainable solution?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. In our view, the most sustainable option must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, considering factors such as the type of product, volume, location, and other specifics. It’s essential to assess the entire production process, including the recyclability of the packaging, to determine the best solution.

Many manufacturers seek versatility when it comes to cartoning, considering the number of various carton configurations that are available. UET’s machines stand out

amongst the crowd due to their compact footprint and patented technology which enables these vertical cartoners to handle tuck in cartons (reverse tuck, aeroplane tuck), hot melt cartons, cartons with a 5th flap, cartons with a combination of closures and in special cases other formats upon study.

The patented technology in the STELLA68™starwheel enables operators to adjust easily between various carton sizes within it’s range, the toolless changeover can adapt between the width, depth and height of the carton without the need of any change parts.

In many cases these cartoners, are configured with manual loading stations with a SICK security camera system installed protecting the loading area, stopping the machine upon obstruction. With up to 4 loading stations (model dependant), a product sensor identifies a product is loaded and automatically signals the machine to continue cycling starting the closing of the carton process.

All machines are bespoke built to customers’ requirements, whether this is a standard manual load requirement or a fully automatic machine. Various automatic loading systems are available,

project dependent, but can include a dosing mechanism for loose products such as confectionary or flower seeds. Alternatively the machines can be fitted with a cobot for the introduction of various bottles / jars.

The Compact 5, 10 station machine can be configured to run with multiple carton formats, and filling requirements such as with an automatic fill and a dedicated manual loading position.

Within the machines compact frame, various options can be integrated; coding equipment (emboss, HP cartridge, inkjet, thermotransfer and laser), pharmacode and datamatrix controls can be managed by a variety of options depending on requirements that include scanner or multifunction cameras to meet track and trace requirements. Automatic leaflet

inserter, labelling on end flap are both possible.

The versatility of these machines does not stop here, customers with existing machines can retrofit to their machine a cobot and benefit from various ways to manage their cartons on outfeed, with grouping tables that are adjustable for a flexible amount of boxes, or tilting into required orientation for other requirements.

Acer Machinery Solutions and UET welcome the opportunity to understand customers requirements and advise on UET’s solution.

The whole range of packaging solutions at PPMA

Shrink wrapping, ecommerce bagging and packaging materials will all be represented at the Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS) stand at this year’s PPMA Show.

Stand

E20 will be displaying two very different shrinkwrapping machine options. Both achieve impressive production speeds resulting in high throughput.

“YPS can offer such a wide range of shrink-wrapping options that it’s difficult for us to choose just a couple to show at an event. The two we’ve selected demonstrate different capabilities as a starting point for discussing the perfect solution for visitors’ operations,” said YPS MD Glyn Johnson.

For display applications, an automatic l-sealer will be presented, which produces glossy, wrinkle-free, shelf-ready packaging. The model displayed features a servo-driven sealing jaw for precise movement which increases line speed whilst achieving an excellent aesthetic finish.

In addition, the inverter driven variable speed infeed and outfeed conveyor belts provide complete flexibility and control when wrapping unstable products. Meanwhile the

“kissing” conveyor system allows small packs to be wrapped with ease, maintaining their shape as they progress through the auto l-sealer.

The l-sealer will be presented along with a compatible shrink heat tunnel, both of which can be controlled together from the user-friendly HMI. The line will be up and running during the show to fully demonstrate its capabilities.

A side-feed sleeve wrapper, ideal for transit wrapping applications, will also be on show.

Two high speed shrink wrapping lines will be featured at stand E20.

The ultimate in flexibility, it can wrap multipacks or singles, trayed or trayless collations, with minimal disruption when changing between pack types.

The sleeve wrapper boasts a number of features that support flexibility, line speed and longterm durability. The heavy-duty sealing jaw can be set just high enough to clear each pack, minimising interval times between seals, for all pack types. The upgraded heavy-duty modular ‘SNB’ infeed belts come as standard to maintain consistent and steady travel of packs throughout the shrink tunnel, for example.

Joining the two shrink wrappers will be two vertical bagging machines, which can maximise throughput for operations preparing products for mailing. These machines are suitable for anything from occasional use to processing up to 700 packs per hour. Vertical baggers are very much plug-and-play machines so that any operation can be up and running with no delay.

These vertical baggers feature advanced technology including integrated data banks, labellers, scanners, and printers (including direct on-bag printing) for a secure all-in-one solution.

Despite the advanced features, they’re extremely easy to use, with a HMI based on Smartphone screen layouts.

On show side by side, one will be running paper and the other polybags, demonstrating the different material options available.

“With the explosion in ecommerce, we’ve found that bagging machinery is increasingly in demand,” explained Glyn. “We’ve brought a range of bagging options to the UK market that can fulfil that demand for a range of operations, from companies just

starting their mailing fulfilment journeys to those that need to process hundreds of bags an hour.”

The stand will also feature YPS’ new materials display, showing a selection of the huge range of films and ecommerce bagging options that the company holds in its extensive warehousing facility. The company is expecting that the new display will be a talking point for those interested in exploring their packaging material options in tandem with their machinery requirements.

YPS only stock 100% recyclable materials. They also hold an ever-growing range of Plastic Tax exempt films, which contain over 30% of recycled content, with some boasting as much as 97%! The company is also able to supply and advise on other greener alternatives such as ultra-thin options and on how to re-configure your equipment for optimal material use.

“The PPMA Show is always a good event for all sorts of companies seeking the latest in packaging technology. The team are looking forward to discussing how we can help those companies make the most of their packaging process in every way,” concluded Glyn.

The future of e-commerce packaging

Meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving industry

The e-commerce sector has grown exponentially in recent years, transforming the way consumers purchase goods and how businesses meet those demands. With this rapid growth comes a new set of challenges, particularly in the realm of packaging.

The pressure to deliver products quickly, sustainably, and securely has intensified, pushing packaging technologies to evolve. Modern packaging machines are at the forefront of addressing these challenges, providing solutions that cater to the complex needs of the e-commerce, mail order, and logistics sectors.

Flexibility: The cornerstone of modern packaging

Whether dealing with the direct dispatch of individual goods, packing groups of products, or meeting the complex requirements of returned goods packaging, one of the primary demands in e-commerce is the need for flexibility. With daily orders varying in size, quantity, and product type, packaging systems must be able to adapt quickly and efficiently. This, coupled with the ability to create precise fitting packaging, means businesses can minimise waste, avoid oversized boxes, and meet

for environmentally responsible practices.

Solutions such as our paper e-com fit are designed to handle a wide range of products and dimensions, offering businesses the ability to switch seamlessly between different packaging requirements, whilst using a minimum amount of paper. To do so, the machine automatically adjusts to the different product sizes during the packaging process, resulting in shipping bags with a tight and accurate fit. Two paper rolls of differing widths enable the machine to automatically select the correct size for each product. This flexibility reduces downtime and streamlines the production

process, ensuring smooth and efficient order processing.

In practice, packing products with varying heights presents a unique technical challenge. Our machine addresses this by accommodating items up to 200 mm tall, ensuring they are securely packed without compromising their appearance or risking breakage during shipment. To achieve this, we’ve developed a new type of packaging with two sewn sides, specifically designed to handle taller products effectively.

Sustainability: A growing imperative

As sustainability becomes a central concern in the packaging industry, e-commerce businesses are increasingly seeking packaging solutions that minimise environmental impact. For applications where film is preferred, the servo X e-com fit machine range ensures products are packed with the lowest amount of film material needed, automatically adjusting the film bags with four sealed sides to the product’s length and width. Capable of processing a diverse range of recyclable material types, from PE flat films from 30 to 100 μm thickness, through to recycled content films which can often contain for example up to 80% and more Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) material, solutions like the servo X e-com fit are playing a key role in helping companies reduce their carbon footprint.

And, as companies begin to seek out renewable source materials, flexible machines which can process alternative material types are playing a major role in meeting these demands. Providing versatile packaging for individual product requirements, the paper X series can process a wide range of sustainable packaging materials, including barrier paper, uncoated kraft paper, offset paper, parchment paper and other recyclable papers with PE, PLA or dispersion coatings, as well as working with all types of film such as PE, PO, PP, bioplastics and recycled content films.

Specifically, the paper X hybrid allows for companies to process both paper and film packaging on the one machine with a simple changeover. Available in the basic paper X model processing paper packaging with overlap on top, as well as the paper X e-com, ideally suited to the e-commerce and mail order sectors, this model is perfect for those needing paper packaging for different product length.

Automation:

Addressing the labour shortage

The ongoing labour and skills shortage in the manufacturing sector, with a reported loss of one million jobs over four years, highlights the need for automation. Advanced packaging machines are increasingly essential, reducing reliance on manual labour and enhancing efficiency. Automation enables packaging systems to adapt to fluctuating order volumes, maintaining high productivity even during peak periods and further streamlining the dispatch process.

Operators and packers often work under tight time constraints, so every action needs to be executed with precision to avoid unnecessary movements and delays. Maximising throughput is essential, and the potential for automating the packing process will differ based on each customer’s needs. To optimise user-friendliness and accessibility, it is crucial to provide tailored solutions that offer flexible adaptations beyond basic functionality.

Offering support through the entire automation process from project planning and manufacture, through to integration into existing packaging lines, Hugo Beck provides complete solutions from a single source.

Our robots and handling systems such as automatic feeding, portals, grouping solutions, stacking and counting devices and cross pushers offer efficient automation solutions.

Global reach: Supporting a worldwide market

As e-commerce expands globally, versatile and reliable packaging solutions that support international operations are critical. Packaging machines must handle diverse materials and products while integrating seamlessly with existing production lines and enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) or control systems. Hugo Beck’s e-commerce machines meet these needs, incorporating labelling technology to ensure each package reaches its recipient. These machines manage every step of the process—from product detection and scanning to printing and applying labels—offering a comprehensive solution that supports the entire e-commerce operation, from packaging to dispatch.
