It is a core value for the company to maintain great relationships, which in turn allows the offering of excellent customer service.

PET is fully recyclable and is the most recycled plastic worldwide because so many waste management systems accept it. All of our bottles and jars are also available in up to 100% food grade rPET. The key impact of rPET is in its creation – reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 71% when compared with Virgin PET and requiring less energy to produce. Both our PET and rPET bottles and jars are produced locally in Europe using 100% renewable energy on energy saving machinery.

Corrugated EPS alternative

Unveiling the future: The top packaging trends set to dominate 2024 Global packaging trends – by Paul Jenkins, Managing Director of ThePackHub It will come as no surprise that sustainable packaging has remained the focus for most of the initiatives we are tracking, with around 4 in 5 innovations primarily delivering environmental objectives. The four dominant packaging trends for 2024 can be unveiled after an extensive analysis of the platform. The trends are as follows:

T

hePackHub team has so far collated over 8,000 packaging innovations from around the world for our market leading Innovation Zone platform. The database is updated at a rate of around 115 new curated innovations every month. The resource gives us a great vantage point to identify the most significant trends in packaging for 2024 and beyond.

Bio Alternatives - the development of biomaterial substitutes for plastic Developers worldwide are working to bring bio-material alternatives to plastic packaging to market. This sees the rise of packaging materials derived from plant-based bio materials, which are often biodegradable and compostable and possess

the resilience and flexibility of traditional plastic. Some also offer enhanced shelf-life properties. Developers are experimenting with materials like mycelium, algae, chitosan, agricultural waste and much more to challenge the functional versatility of plastic. As we witness the growth of this trend, it’s clear that bio-material alternatives continue to have cost challenges compared to cheap, high-volume plastic. A recent example from the market can help bring this trend to life. Researchers at Beijing Forestry University are exploring an environmentally friendly alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam commonly used in shipping packaging. In response to the environmental concerns associated with EPS, which is derived from petroleum and

9

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

being challenging to recycle, the scientists turned to upcycling cardboard waste, including boxes used for EPSpacked products. Using a blend of cardboard scraps, glycerol gelatin, and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glue, the team created biodegradable cushioning foams with reported excellent thermal insulation and impact-absorbing properties. To enhance durability, they incorporated a silica-based shear-thickening fluid, resulting in a robust foam capable of withstanding hammer impacts. This sustainable approach offers potential applications in various fields, such as cargo drops from aircraft. The study, recently published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, signifies a promising step towards greener packaging alternatives.

Recycling 2.0 - a resurgence in recyclable packaging and increased recycled content In a bid to combat the environmental challenges of waste, a trend we’ve dubbed “Recycling 2.0” continues to shape the packaging landscape for 2024. This trend underscores a commitment to delivering recyclable packaging and increased recycled content. The trend is not only evident in the adoption of recyclable materials but also the incorporation of more post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in packaging. A typical initiative from our Innovation Zone platform comes from Sirane. They have expanded their Earth Packaging range with the

10

introduction of a plasticfree and paper recyclable butter wrap. The Earthfilm Butter-Wrap utilises coated papers, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional butter wraps. The water-based barrier coatings on the paper provide the necessarygrease and moisture barrier. The wrap is available in different options, including standard, Xtra (with a moisture barrier on both sides), and metallised film (Ultra) with a higher barrier and metallised finish. This sustainable solution aligns with current industry practices but is notably paper-recyclable. The company, headquartered in Telford, emphasises that the Earthfilm Butter- Wrap is an exciting development for the butter industry, combining functionality with sustainability and even offering metallic gold/ silver papers for aesthetic appeal while still maintaining recyclability.

Paperisation - the accelerating shift to paper materials Navigating away from traditional plastic packaging, the food and beverage industry is witnessing a pronounced pivot with an accelerated shift towards using paper materials. This trend encapsulates a strategic move towards paper as an alternative to plastic, spurred by growing consumer demand for what it seen as more environmentally friendly options. Paper, being recyclable and sourced from renewable resources, can often present a viable and less impactful alternative to plastic. However, switching to paper may not always be the best sustainable move with plastic being lightweight, functional (great for reducing food waste) and recyclable. The Paperisation trend also carries an inherent nod towards innovation, as developers find creative ways to ensure paper-based packaging matches up to their plastic counterparts’ durability, flexibility, and convenience. As we chart the course of this

trend, it’s clear that the increased adoption of paper is more than a passing phase - it is an integral part of the future landscape of sustainable packaging. A recent illustration to grab our attention comes from Quaker Oats, a prominent player in the UK porridge pot market. The brand owner has introduced new pot packaging made from paper, aimed at reducing its annual use of virgin plastic by 200 tonnes. The transition to paper packaging simplifies the recycling process for consumers and contributes to a substantial reduction in virgin plastic used in porridge pots nationwide. While Quaker porridge pots were previously recyclable, the plastic inner packaging had to be separated from the card sheath for recycling. As part of PepsiCo’s sustainability initiative, PepsiCo Positive, this move follows other climate-friendly changes within the company. Quaker Oats, representing 47% of the UK porridge pot market, aligns with the broader efforts of its parent company, which recently introduced paper outer packaging for Walkers Baked multipacks. The company emphasises convenience as a crucial factor in promoting recycling rates, highlighting the significance of making recycling as straightforward as possible for consumers.

Refill Wave - the rise of reusable and refillable solutions A significant wave of change is sweeping across the packaging industry with the “Refill Wave,” a trend marking the increasing popularity of reusable and refillable solutions. This movement is underpinned by

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

the core principle of a circular economy - to keep resources in use for as long as possible. The “Refill Wave” is about more than just reducing waste; it signifies a fundamental shift in consumer behaviour. Brand owners and retailers are introducing innovative refillable and reusable packaging systems (mainly pilots and trials), while many consumers are more actively seeking these options. The rise of reusable and refillable solutions sees a change in approach, marking a promising step towards achieving long-term sustainability in the packaging industry. An example of reuse in action comes from global beverage company PepsiCo and German reusable packaging systems provider Vytal who have joined forces in a strategic partnership to address environmental concerns and combat plastic waste through innovative packagingsolutions. The collaboration aligns with PepsiCo’s pep+ sustainability agenda, marking a significant milestone in their commitment to environmental responsibility.

A spokesperson for PepsiCo DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) emphasised their dedication to reducing plastic waste and driving positive change. The partnership aims to unveil sustainable packaging solutions at a national launch during Internorga 2024 in Hamburg. Vytal’s digital approach to facilitating the issuing and return of reusable containers is highlighted as a competitive advantage. A spokesperson for Vytal expressed pride in expanding reusable options.

The packaging industry’s ongoing commitment to sustainability is clear, with a strong focus on innovative solutions that address consumer environmental concerns and legislative changes while maintaining functionality and consumer appeal. These trends reflect a broader movement towards more sustainable practices, driven by both technological advances and changing consumer preferences. We anticipate these trends to be of impact throughout 2024 and beyond.

The first who could make a jerrycan from plastic soup was Houweling Houweling is the first packaging producer to manufacture a jerrycan from plastic soup. Old fishing nets from ocean waste are collected and converted into a new raw material at a recycling company. Houweling can use its own extrusion blowmolding machines to create jerrycans. “Twenty years ago, we could not have imagined having a quality manager in-house as a relatively small packaging company,” says Marc Houweling. “We were mainly practical and used to doing a lot ourselves. Almost all filling activities for our horticultural products are now outsourced to certified companies.”

14001, and ISO 45001,” says Erik Forsten. “This ensures that we offer quality products and services, protect and relieve the environment as much as possible, and optimize our working conditions. In addition, we respond to today’s issues and can innovate in them.”

It is one of the many things the new quality manager, Erik Forsten, has initiated.“We are certified for ISO 9001, ISO

The sustainable mindset of the packaging supplier from Bleiswijk (which is also active in horticulture and supplies

Climate-neutral building

workwear and personal protective equipment) is evident in its new, climate-neutral building. The stairs leading to the office are made from a mix of recycled jerrycans, IBCs, and barrels. In addition, there are solar panels on the roof, and a rainwater-saving system has been installed.

Chain-wide The move to a new building has another reason, according to Marc Houweling. “It better aligns

13

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

with our CSR and sustainable packaging goals by keeping raw materials in the chains and with our norms and values. Many of our customers are contributing to this philosophy, and new customers are joining in. Hence the playfulness with those recycled plastic stair treads, which incorporate our own recycled packaging. Many customers used to see us as traders.” With the recently set up blow-molding factory and the constantly growing reconditioning activities, we have become a producer and have integrated backward in the chain. We have also started sourcing the raw materials ourselves. The unique thing is that we use recycled raw materials from packaging we collect ourselves. It has even gotten to the point where we

14

install our own shredders. In short, we have the entire chain in our hands.

Legislation-proof In addition to supplying and reconditioning IBCs and barrels, Houweling also supplies plastic bottles, buckets, jerrycans, and barrels. The company takes these packaging materials, processes them back into raw materials, so they do not end up in the incinerator. Before Houweling had this process in order, it had discussions with the government, says quality manager Erik Forsten.

“With new developments, such as the circular economy, you often see a tension between policymakers and legislation. It is important to align the implementation framework

with legislation. To work circularly, you must comply with legislation,” he continues. “If you don’t have your affairs in order, the legislator sees the return flow as waste, and then you are a waste processor and need various permits. Therefore, we have developed a certified process for turning conditioned waste into high-quality raw material. We know the disposer, know what the packaging is made of, know what it has been used for, know how to sort it, and reuse it. We also check and test all incoming goods for the presence of hazardous substances and stay within the maximum limits. Plastic streams we cannot process go to third parties. In short, we can handle all plastic streams and meet all criteria. The used packaging we take in is not waste but raw material for a new unique product.

Ton’s take: Circular packaging - refill vs prefill Dear Packaging Suppliers Global reader, Thank you for taking the time to read my take on packaging issues. This is already my 3rd contribution to the Packaging Suppliers Global digital magazine and I hope I’m not boring you. If you agree or disagree with my points of view, please feel free to contact me. I’d really appreciate your feedback. In the 1st edition, I spoke about the challenges of converting sustainable packaging materials in existing production processes. I interviewed Marieke Havermans of TNO about how to adjust your processes in order to produce without compromising output and quality.

16

In the 2nd edition, I wrote about Food & Beverage packaging, as this is by far the largest category of packaging material. I talked to Ron van Hilst of Cargill about the importance of barriers to avoid food waste.

Circular packaging, what is this? In this 3rd edition, I like to talk to you about circular packaging. Although this is a very broad definition, for me, it is all about packaging which is being reused/refilled by the customer. It’s nothing new, as refill initiatives have been around for donkey’s years. I used to shop in a local grocery store in Rotterdam in the early 80’s, where they had

large fiber drums with commodity products like rice, cereals and pet foods for scooping. Throughout Europe, many more examples of refill stations followed, one more sophisticated than the other. So, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last decades, you will have probably come across such a refill station. So what is circular packaging? Let’s see if we can get a mutual understanding of that name, as there are many interpretations going around. Yes, you’re right, recycled packaging can be called circular packaging too. Unfortunately, legislation doesn’t allow for recycled packaging to be used as food packaging, because of risk of migration.

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

If it’s in a closed loop, such as PET bottles, it is possible, so yes, recycling is definitely a form of circularity. However, what I’m looking at here is refill packaging, because this is where the customer is directly involved. I deliberately used the term customer and avoided the word consumer as I like to address this from 2 different angles; for the Business-to-Consumer (B-t-C) market, but also for the Business-to-Business (B-t-B) market.

Business-to-Consumer market: Refill vs Prefill First, let’s look at what most of us have seen already; refill stations at your local supermarket, so B-t-C. These are used for commoditized products, such as cereals, pet foods, rice, just like my local supermarket in Rotterdam did 40 years ago. Most refill stations function where the consumer takes a bag and holds it underneath a dispenser with the product of choice. Once the consumer thinks they have the amount of product they want, they’ll stop the dispensing. This is problem no. 1, as not all consumers have the same spatial understanding of what the bag can actually contain. Another problem arising out of a self-dispensing consumer, is that there are many distractions, such as children, friends and mobile phones that may distract from the timely stopping the dispensing.

What if a consumer brings their own container for refilling, but this container has not been properly cleaned? In the Netherlands, you’re legally allowed to bring your own container to the ‘Chippy’, but most of them refuse to put the chips in, as they don’t want to be held responsible when the product doesn’t taste well once home. Problem no. 5 is all about hygiene. Obviously the mess on the floor, as described in problem no. 2 is already a hygiene challenge, but this is a potentially more serious problem. People with let’s say a serious nut allergy will not be very happy with nuts trampled on the floor, as this could trigger an allergic reaction. Ironically, all of us having worked in a food packaging environment, know that in a BRC environment it’s been forbidden to have nut products in the facility. Even eating a peanut butter sandwich is not allowed, because of the risk of contamination of the other food packaging. Warehouses storing packed food are not permitted to store nut products. Packed foods which may have been in contact with nuts have to warn the allergic consumer. I’ve seen bags of peanuts which had a warning panel stating that the product may contain nuts (sic)……………

Through one of my roles as Executive Director at the European Co Packers Association (ECPA), I know how contract packers and contract manufacturers are dealing with these very strict allergen rules. This makes it all the more difficult to comprehend that retailers would allow nut products to be dispensed out of a refill station with allergens floating around. The above mentioned problems are the reason why most of these refill stations usually quietly disappear out of the supermarkets. Contrast with all the fanfare with which they were introduced. Obviously with technology improving, there are much more sophisticated refill stations, but let’s see how both retailers and consumers will embrace them. It is a great shame for the growing group of consumers who want to contribute to packaging reduction. There’s been initiatives of packaging-free supermarkets throughout Europe, but so far the vast majority failed. The alternative way of reducing packaging may not be through refill but through prefill. The difference there is that the actual filling of the product is not done at the retailer. The consumer buys a packed product, usually in a more sturdy container,

This then leads to problem no .2. The bag is overloaded or perhaps to weak for the excess weight, which results in product on the floor. This needs to be cleaned up immediately, as it’ll get spread over the aisle, people may slip over it and young children may pick it up. In todays’ supermarkets, staff is scarce, so the chance that the mess on the floor will be there a while, is very real. Problem no. 3 arising out of this is ‘who pays for the spilled product’? Problem no.4 is about responsibility for a failed product.

17

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

which is returned (or picked up) once empty, cleaned and refilled. The responsibility of the refilling with the earlier mentioned showstoppers, is being transferred to specialized companies, such as contract packers. This is why it’s called PREFILL. There have been some interesting prefill initiatives and I’d like to highlight one here. Last year I got in touch with Ben Patten (pictured) at Dizzie. They are selling rigid plastic containers with various food products, such as granolas, lentils, pastas, rice and snacks. After the consumer has emptied the container, they can return it through a reverse vending machine at the retailer or have it collected by the delivery driver. Yes, I hear you say, just like the milkman use to do. The beauty of this however, is that Dizzie has teamed up with national retailers, such as Milk & More, Abel & Cole and Modern Milkman. Good to see how these new initiatives can be combined with things that worked well in the past and help the modern conscious consumer. The key driver for the success of Dizzie will be that they get solid partnerships with brand owners, food producers and can build up a robust distribution network. Using a professional party to clean and refill the containers will contribute to an efficient flow and quality. With todays’ consumers having less time to spend on grocery shopping, delivering direct-to-consumer will help unburden their time constraints.

Business-to-Business market: Join the Loop All these already mentioned food- and non-food products in the supermarkets need to be produced, packed and distributed. This is usually done in huge packaging formats bulk containers such as jerry cans or buckets. These containers are quite often not being reused, as the producer of the product may be in a different country. These packs will then end up in landfill/ incineration or with a bit of luck in the recycling stream. This is a shame, as they’re built to last a long time and can be easily reused. But, just as with the law not allowing you to use recycled content for food packaging for consumer packaging, the same applies for industrial packaging. Reuse is difficult, unless you have a closed loop, but this may not be practical with long (global) supply chains. Late last year, I was invited to join in a panel discussion by Christa Bakker (pictured). She started the initiative Join the Loop for a closed loop for industrial packaging. Christa identified that there is a huge amount of empty bulk packaging, which

could easily be reused for many more years. But no one knew how to set up a closed loop guaranteeing the history of the container so that it could be used again safely. Given her background in the chemical industry with supplies into the food and pharmaceutical industry and the magnitude of these markets, she started Join the Loop, a matchmaking platform to exchange used packaging streams for re-use or recycling with specific characteristics, guaranteed origins and recorded history. As this is all for B-t-B markets, you can more easily predict the product streams. For now, it’s still a concept, but immediately after the initial introduction, there was massive interest, as the advantages are obvious. Not only does it help industry fulfill its part of the sustainability challenges. It also will save lots of money going forward. Initiatives such as Join the Loop are ideas, but with the bright minds of the right people combined with the latest technology like blockchain, they can make a huge difference. I hope that this little deep-dive into reusable packaging will provide you food for thought.

Spectra - Redefining the packaging industry pectra Packaging is a S leading independent manufacturer of rigid plastic

packaging for the toiletries, cosmetics, and personal care markets. The UK-based converter champions sustainability, promoting the idea that packaging suppliers should set an example for others to follow by making a responsible commitment that extends beyond the products they make. This ethos drives Spectra’s commitment to help brands make informed decisions that mitigate

environmental harm when packaging their products.

Sustainability at its core

on sustainability continues to fuel innovation within the business, compelling it to explore alternative materials and processes, which helps set it apart in the industry.

Since its formation in 2008, Spectra has placed sustainability at the heart of its operations, with a belief that those within the industry must step up and initiate change. Indeed, Spectra has seen the significance of sustainability grow among its customers and partners, enabling them to nurture stronger bonds with environmentally conscious brands and adapt to evolving consumer awareness. Similarly, adopting a keen focus

The company’s purpose-built manufacturing facility was designed in 2010 with the environment in mind, benefitting from solar and green energy, air source heating, energyefficient machinery and lighting, recycled materials used within the building structure, electric car charging points, flood prevention measures, a purpose-built cycle path and the regular planting of trees on its site.

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

Spectra has also successfully embedded sustainability into its operations, from product design to green procurement policies and energy consumption reduction; adopting circular economy principles to implement green supply chain standards and responsible waste management

responsibly, plastics are still the go-to material, providing lightweight, durable, and costeffective solutions for personal care products. The material also promotes financial sustainability for brand owners and consumers and provides practical benefits such as squeezability and maximisation of product use.

Helping brands make better choices

The second pillar advocates approaching packaging decisions from an informed and scientific perspective. Personal care brands can prioritise environmental sustainability by considering packaging materials’ life cycle, from material harvesting and packaging manufacture to recyclability and carbon footprint. This scientific approach urges brands to seek and adopt solutions that minimise environmental harm, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainability.

This year, Spectra launched its Better Choices campaign, a strategic call to action that underscores the importance of making informed, sciencebased decisions to reduce environmental harm. The campaign aims to reshape the personal care and cosmetics packaging landscape, focusing on three fundamental pillars. The first pillar acknowledges the diverse packaging needs of various products and the enormous importance of choosing materials that best suit specific applications. Spectra argues that when used

28

To illustrate this, Spectra commissioned an independent Life Cycle Analysis in 2021 to determine the environmental impact of one of its typical products against comparable

products made from glass and aluminium. The assessment considered Spectra’s manufacturing practices and concluded that its HDPE and PET plastic products provided the lowest overall environmental impact based on a UK market scenario compared to their glass and aluminium counterparts. Full LCA Report here. The third part of the campaign looks at the importance of partnerships with suppliers that proactively lead the way in packaging sustainability. Spectra believes brands should demand bold collaborations with suppliers who share a commitment to environmental responsibility and community impact. Thoughtleading initiatives, such as PCR30 and their Prevented Ocean Plastic commitment clearly demonstrate Spectra’s dedication to being a proactive partner. By integrating these pillars, Spectra’s Better Choices message aims to foster a culture of responsibility, transparency, and continual improvement

within the personal care products industry, encouraging brands to make well-informed, sustainable, and proactive decisions that benefit both the environment and the broader global community. By establishing robust sustainability standards and leading by example, Spectra aspires to inspire and influence other packaging manufacturers to prioritise environmental responsibility, contribute to a healthier planet, and redefine industry norms. Spectra passionately believes this should be the standard within the packaging industry. +44 (0)1986 834190 sales@spectra-packaging.co.uk www.spectra-packaging.co.uk

Innovative. Creative. Individual. We are specialised in food packaging. I

IC Packaging is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of customised and environmentally friendly food packaging supplying the FMCG industry. The Freiburg-based company with sales offices in the UK, Australia and Hong Kong has been developing customised thermoformed and IML injection moulded sustainable food packaging for all major sectors of the food industry for almost 30 years.

Dirk Wohlgemuth, Director of Sales & Marketing, talks here about his role in the company, innovations and sustainable solutions that the packaging industry is currently facing and will face in the near future. Dirk Wohlgemuth moved to the UK 20 years ago to support the sales and distribution of IIC products in the UK and Australia. As sales manager, Dirk always looks out into the world to identify new trends at an early stage and implement innovative solutions. His main focus is on the careful use of resources, scrutinising existing processes and driving innovation with the result of packaging of the best possible quality. Of course, sustainability is a crucial issue for the packaging industry and is at the centre of IIC’s values, as Dirk emphasises: “As a manufacturer of 600 million food packages per year for ice cream, dairy products, fruit and vegetables through to delicatessen and confectionery, IIC has already developed over 250 successful packaging concepts. Every year, we serve renowned food brands and well-known supermarkets.

With hundreds of satisfied customers in over 40 countries, we are aware of our ecological responsibility.” When developing new packaging concepts, particular attention is therefore paid to the principles of reduction, reuse, and recycling as well as the development of new sustainable materials. This raises the question of how IIC defines sustainability. “Customised, innovative and the best possible packaging for food that is as durable, economical and ecological as possible,” reports Dirk.

“For example, we work with the innovative IML process (in-mould labelling), a singlestage production process under ideal hygienic conditions. This sophisticated technology combines maximum quality with minimum use of material (plastic).” The IML process is therefore an innovative labelling technology for plastic packaging. However, the procedure is extremely demanding: pre-printed labels are inserted directly into the injection mould. This procedure

31

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

enables labelling to take place during the packaging production process, in contrast to conventional methods where this only takes place afterwards. The special feature? There is no need for a separate adhesive layer. This is because the labels bond directly with the molten plastic during the injection of the liquid plastic. After cooling, this creates an inseparable unit in which the label is firmly bonded to the packaging.

“This processing technology results in single-material packaging that is fully recyclable - an extremely important factor in terms of environmental friendliness and sustainability that should not be underestimated,” adds Dirk. Another advanced method for environmentally conscious packaging solutions is thermoforming, which IIC uses. Here, too, the aim is to make packaging more efficient. But what exactly does this mean and how does it work?

“Thermoforming is a specialised process that can shape thermoplastics in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours. And it does this using only negative pressure and heat. This enables us to manufacture products of the highest quality that fulfil our customers’ individual requirements and are durable and reliable.” Can thermoforming then also be described as an environmentally friendly technology?

“Basically, the aims of environmental protection are to save resources, reduce waste and increase the use of recyclable materials. Thermoforming enables the production of lightweight yet stable packaging, which reduces material consumption compared to other processes. This contributes to the minimisation of resources and energy. Another advantage of thermoforming is that it can be produced with R-PET. This

32

facilitates the recycling process and reduces the environmental impact.” The packaging industry will continue to focus more on sustainability in the future. How does Dirk assess further developments?

“The need to implement cost-effective manufacturing processes that are easy to process and offer full recyclability of the packaging will continue to play a crucial role. There have already been many innovative developments in materials in recent years, such as chemically recycled polypropylene, and production technologies are also constantly being improved to reduce weight and consume less energy,” Dirk looks back. “There are also increasingly better recycling processes that enable a more efficient circular economy. I think that a lot of developments will come onto the market in the next few years. We will go through a phase of innovation with different materials and production methods. We are investing a lot of time in research and development and already have some exciting new concepts in the pipeline.”

Lantech supplies packaging solutions for Gousto home recipe boxes Home recipe meal kits are popular. Home cooks can order fresh ingredients for meals online, and have them delivered straight to their doorstep. To meet the growing demand, UK-based Gousto has invested in automating its processes. Packaging machines from Lantech are part of the solution. K home recipe meal kit U supplier Gousto has already purchased a number of Lantech

packaging machines to support its growth. The company has also made a new investment in Lantech’s packaging technology; working together in order to

greatly increase production capacity for erecting and sealing the shipping cartons that serve as thermally insulated containers for the meal kit’s. Gousto turned to Lantech’s Centre of Excellence in Malden, the Netherlands, for a comprehensive solution.

Machines process many types of cases Lantech, which is one of the exhibitors at Packaging Innovations & Empack 2024, recommended the C-1000 and CI-1000 case erectors to the recipe box supplier, because of their flexibility in handling different types and sizes of case at high speeds. A major advantage of the machines is the simple and consistent way in which they always produce right-angled boxes. 90-degree right angles in all corners ensures that the cases are optimally suited to the logistics chain and have maximum stability. The different properties of the corrugated cardboard as well as environmental factors such as changing temperatures and humidity, also pose challenges. However, Lantech machines can easily cope with these, explain Mike Irving and Kieran Ford, UK sales managers at Lantech. The case erecting process is fully controlled from the moment the blank is loaded into the magazine, to the moment it emerges as a fully formed box with a closed base; a specially designed

38

pick-up frame pulls the case out of the magazine on two sides and ensures it is consistently opened into a rectangular position. Before the case is conveyed further, the flaps are folded, making the case rigid and fixing it in its rectangular position. A push bar progresses the case towards springloaded side belts that move inwards and outwards to compensate for width deviations, and transport the case over the closing device. The meal kit supplier can produce up to 30 cases per minute with the case erectors, the bottoms of which are sealed with adhesive tape or hot glue.

“Working together with Gousto to overcome their packaging challenges has been really exciting” “It’s always great to collaborate and create solutions that work perfectly; ensuring accuracy, reliability, and exceeding the required throughput speeds. We look forward to working on many more projects together””. – Kieran and Mike

Secure sealing process After ingredient filling, the recipe boxes are automatically sealed. The Lantech CS-1000 and CS-Random High Speed systems are used here. The rectangular shape of the cases is also maintained during this process. Automatically adjusted centering and feeding systems ensure that the cases are fed correctly, with sufficient space between them to avoid jams. Rollers move the cartons to the spring-loaded side conveyor belts, which can adjust to the slightest variations in carton width. The belts hold the case while the flaps are folded down, during a completely controlled sequence, and sealed with adhesive tape. The Lantech CS-1000 Random High Speed carton sealer can even automatically adjust to changing carton formats.

About Lantech Lantech is a global leader in stretch wrappers, and case & tray handling machines. Founded in 1972, the US familyowned company developed the world’s first rotary stretch wrapper and has continuously optimised this technology ever since. Lantech employs around 750 people. The European headquarters are located in Malden, Netherlands. www.lantech.com

BVM Papertec 95/5

Introducing Adpak’s cutting-edge e-commerce machines Automated e-commerce packaging solutions – Plastic or paper packaging, we do both! You make the choice...

A

dpak is the UK’s number one supplier of packaging machines, systems, and films to both large and small businesses across a wide range of industries. With over 12,000 successful machine installations to our name since 1988, supporting a variety of different applications, we know a thing or two about shrink wrapping and packaging systems. Here, we showcase just some of our e-commerce

machines for wrapping in paper and film.

Papertec 95/5 – Highly flexible packaging, either in kraft paper or film on one bagging machine The Papertec 95/5 is a highly flexible machine, for packaging products using either kraft paper or sustainable packaging film. The newly developed sealing option has made this

innovation possible, using a single roll of paper or film which is folded before the sealing part of the process. The paper is recyclable and will withstand the mechanical as well as technical demands of the postal network. The Papertec 95/5 can be easily adapted to different product ranges. The product length can be variable and is measured during the process to give an appropriate bag size.

41

Packaging Suppliers Global | Issue One 2024

To increase the brand value of your shipments, the paper or film used can be preprinted with your logo or other advertising content. For the perfect e-commerce despatch system, we can also supply the Papertec 95/5 complete with scanners, address labelling machines and conveyors to suit.

BVM Paper Packaging Machines – Maxibrief & Papertec 800 The BVM Paper packaging machinery range can help you to increase your outbound throughput, packing various sized products without the need for setting changes. The Maxibrief & Papertec 800 systems use pure kraft paper with no PE coating and no paper waste. The items are packaged ready for dispatch. The pure grade paper packaging material is fully recyclable and compostable. The packaging can easily be reused by the end user for a possible return shipment. Paper is significantly cheaper than cardboard packaging, and can be stored on rolls in a

Comtex 4G

42

space-saving manner, in just one width. The fully automated packaging process of the BVM Papertec systems, enables significant savings to be made in personnel and material costs.

Comtex – the machine choice for fully automatic packaging of either outbound items in coloured film for shipping, or inbound items for returns processing A sealed package is produced either with transparent or centre folded film. Working in-line and measured via light curtains, this machine can automatically process products of different dimensions. The products do not have to be pre-sorted beforehand. The machine is set to the maximum possible product size. The film pack is first cut to length, then depending on the product width, the excess bag is cut off in an additional side sealing station. A tight film bag is produced by scanning the product’s dimensions during the packaging process and tightly sealing the film in both

directions. An item packaged in coloured film with a shipping label is now ready for dispatch. This machine can also be used for packaging returned items in clear film, ready to go back into stock. The processing of other products such as books, magazines, shoes, electronics and spare parts is also possible. The Comtex is available in two sizes the 4G and 3G. The Comtex 4G covers a wider and higher product range (sealing width 750 mm, belt width 600 mm) and is more suitable for outbound applications. These fully automatic mail order and returns systems are available with or without labelling. In the Comtex family, the operation of the side sealing station has been fundamentally changed to increase performance. This makes outputs of up to 1800 packs per hour possible. BVM are true market leaders with a solution to suit every application. For more information, please contact one of our sales managers on +44 (0)1282 601444 or via email to sales@adpak.co.uk.

Our mission is to reduce the amount of plastic in consumer packaging by offering innovative, sustainable solutions primarily made from renewable sources. From luxury rigid boxes to folding cartons, retail bags,

e-commerce boxes, mailing bags and pulp trays, we use our experience and expertise to advise on the right decision for you. With FSC certification, we can ensure that our paper is sourced from responsible manufacturers. Whilst fibres from trees form a critical part of these materials, we also offer new revolutionary materials that have a lesser reliance on our forests. These alternative materials are made from a mixture of wood fibres and agricultural waste such as sugar cane, grass, seaweed, or bamboo. By using previously ignored resources and agricultural by-products, which would previously have

been discarded or turned into soil, the environmental footprint is much smaller than traditional paper products. As they have been made into paper suitable for manufacturing packaging, these materials can be recycled in the same way as any other regular paper. Part of our packaging design process includes choosing materials that are compatible with UK recycling so that it can be easily recycled at the end of its life. With this in mind, we avoid the use of plastic laminates as they negatively affect the paper recycling process and instead utilise our custom developed water-based varnish. It gives a durable and premium finish

whilst minimising the impact to recycling. It is also important to not forget about what holds everything together – the adhesive! Most modern adhesives are unfortunately made using fossil oils and not all are compatible with recycling. We carefully choose the least impactful adhesives and use as little as possible to achieve a premium finish. We have also developed a bio-based plastic-free starch adhesive that will dissolve in waterhelping you remove another plastic element. You might think that all of this is going to cost you more. It doesn’t have to. We work closely with you to carefully design your packaging ensuring that materials used are minimised whilst giving

your products the presentation they deserve. In addition, in many cases, we can save you money overall by designing your packaging to be fully compatible with the most efficient carrier rates and palletised logistics. Our design offices and warehousing facilities are located in Worcester, UK with over 50,000 sqft of warehouse space across multiple sites. We have over 2000 pallet spaces, offering full scalability for large productions and shipments. Our factory is based in Shenzhen China with state-of-the-art presses and finishing equipment in a dust and humidity-controlled environment. For those customers manufacturing products in the Far East, we are perfectly positioned to

supply direct to your factory. Our team in China are experts in project managing the product sourcing required for materials we do not manufacture ourselves. Lyte Packaging is part of the Sisemen Group with a varied and comprehensive full solution offering. Through Nemesis we can offer a 3PL service, managing your stock and delivering to your customers for you. Lyte Manufacturing can help you to design, source, and manufacture your products. At Project 7 we offer a contract packing and flexible pouch filling service that is fully scalable to your requirements. Coca-Cola is set to conduct its first UK trial of ‘label-less’ packaging, starting with Sprite and Sprite Zero on-the-go bottles. During the limited trial, labels will be temporarily removed from single 500ml Sprite and Sprite Zero bottles, replaced by an embossed logo on the front. Laser-engraved product and nutritional information will be featured on the back of the pack.

While the existing labels are fully recyclable, this innovative approach aims to simplify the recycling process by eliminating the need to separate labels during recycling, thereby reducing overall packaging material usage.

Nespresso Canada expands coffee capsule recycling scheme Nespresso Canada broadens its Green Bag recycling solution to include all Prince Edward Island communities, extending convenient recycling options for aluminium coffee capsules. The Green Bag Programme, now available in over 1,000 communities across Canada, simplifies selective collection. Residents use green bags from Nespresso to collect used capsules, then drop the filled green bag in their household recycling. Recyclable bags are sent to sorting centres, where a local partner separates aluminium from coffee grounds. The recycled aluminium contributes to sustainability, and the coffee grounds become high-quality compost on local farms.

and participating licensed stores to use their clean personal cups.

Launched in 2022, the pilot programme introduced a reusable Tim Hortons cup that users sign up for and return to designated drop-off bins. Once returned, the cups are washed and redistributed for reuse. Beyond promoting reusable cups, the initiative also aimed to combat single-use cup landfill waste by providing convenient recycling points in commercial and on-street locations.

Effective immediately, customers can opt for reusables when ordering in the café, drive-thru, or via the Starbucks app. This milestone offers a significant opportunity for customers to choose sustainability, supporting Starbucks’ commitment to a 50% waste reduction by 2030.

Hungary debuts new deposit return scheme for drink containers Hungary kick-started the New Year with the inauguration of its new deposit return scheme (DRS) for drink container recycling on January 1st. Collaborating with MOHU (MOL Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt.), the central system administrator for the DRS, global reverse vending leader, TOMRA has worked to establish an extensive collection infrastructure in Hungary. This infrastructure aims to ensure the convenient return of singleuse drink containers, making recycling easily accessible for newcomers. The DRS encompasses ready-todrink or concentrated beverages (excluding milk and milk-based products) in single-use aluminium cans and glass/plastic bottles ranging from 0.1 to 3 litres. Consumers pay a deposit of 50 Hungarian forint (approximately €0.13) when purchasing an eligible drink, refunded upon returning the empty container for recycling—creating a system akin to purchasing the drink but borrowing the container.

Starbucks is the ‘first’ U.S. national coffeehouse to allow personal cups for mobile orders, while in Canada, the option extends to all drinks and sizes. This move is part of Starbucks’ larger cultural shift toward reusables, making it convenient for customers to use their personal cups during every visit.

Sustainable spirits: Bacardi’s breakthrough in hydrogen bottle production Bacardi, a family-owned spirits company, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the world’s first commercial production of a glass spirits bottle powered by hydrogen. The successful trial, conducted earlier this month, marks a collaborative effort between Bacardi and premium glassmaker Hrastnik1860. In an innovative approach, Bacardi and Hrastnik1860

pioneered new technology that utilised hydrogen as the primary energy source for a glass furnace. This groundbreaking initiative aims to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, commonly associated with traditional glass bottle production. The trial featured the iconic STGERMAIN® elderflower liqueur bottle, maintaining an identical appearance to bottles produced using conventional methods.
