INFORMATION PACKAGE 2022-2023 PSVI COACH ACADEMY

What is PacificSport VI Coach Academy?

The PSVI Coach Academy is an eight-month training program providing coaches with NCCP courses, applied coaching workshops, and mentorship! It is delivered online with face-to-face and self-paced components, as well as mentorship based activities facilitated by PSVI staff, guest lecturers, and qualified coaches The goal of the PSVI Coach Academy is to train coaches to a higher level of education through an atmosphere of collaboration, connection, and inclusion by providing a wide variety of programming to meet the needs of each individual coach

The PSVI Coach Academy will provide opportunities for participants to learn in a collaborative environment, develop their coaching ability through nationally accredited coursework, provide engaging education on important topics related to effective coaching practices, and receive mentorship from experienced coaches

This document contains information about the PSVI Coach Academy content and the schedule throughout the year. The program is broken down into three semesters Information on coaching courses (i e , National Coaching Certification Program courses), PSVI workshops and training, online coursework, and mentorship process are explained in each phase

Performance Analyst 1 Certification from The International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport (ISPAS)

Participants of this Coach Academy will be required to attend virtual workshops on various topics, complete online work using Google Classroom. Full participation is required to receive credit for the course

Coaches will also be assigned to a Mentor This individual will be an experienced coach with qualifications and experience relevant to the Coach Academy participant They will work with their assigned Coach through the duration of the course

Upon completion of the Coach Academy, coaches will receive a Sport Development Certificate from the Canadian Sport Institute-Pacific, and receive priority access and discounts to the International Coaching School hosted by CSIPacific. The program focuses on the Competition-Development multisport modules.

PacificSport VI Coach Academy Format

There are three semesters in the PSVI Coach Academy each with Face to Face (online), Self-Paced, and Mentorship-based delivery and assignments

Face to Face (online)

The Face-to-Face component will involve most of the participation in the Coach Academy This section will include all NCCP certification courses, group workshops led by the PSVI staff and other guest lecturers, as well as additional group meetings and social events that will happen at certain points throughout the year All Face to Face components will be delivered online via Zoom

Self-Paced

A component of the Coach Academy will be completed outside of the Face-toFace commitments These assignments will be linked to the workshops in each phase. All Individual content will be in the Coach Academy Google Classroom where coaches can complete assignments on their own time before assignment deadlines.

Mentorship

Each coach will be assigned a mentor who will provide support for the coach throughout their involvement in the Coach Academy. The Mentor is someone who will provide support for the coach in their development throughout the program This individual will meet with their assigned coaches and provide feedback and guidance on specific aspects of their coaching role The mentors will also be a source of information for the coach participants and provide support on their coach development process

Semester 1: The Art of Coaching | September-December 2022

Semester 1 will provide education on the soft skills of coaching – reflecting on values to guide behaviour developing effective communication skills to work with athletes, finding strategies to best connect with the learning styles of athletes, and outlining program goals as they relate to core principles of development

NCCP Make Ethical Decisions (Competition – Introduction):

This course will provide coaches with strategies to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety The training helps coaches identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves in the world of team and individual sport Upon completing the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training, coaches will be able to analyze a challenging situation and determine if it has moral, legal or ethical implications; and apply the NCCP Ethical DecisionMaking Model to properly respond to situations in a way that is consistent with the NCCP Code of Ethics.

NCCP Planning a Practice (Competition – Introduction):

This course will provide strategies to effectively plan a practice to maximize athlete learning. Coaches who complete this module will be able to explain the importance of logistics in the development of a practice plan, establish an appropriate structure for a practice, and identify appropriate activities for each part of the practice Coaches will also complete a Emergency Action Plan activity where they will design their own EAP for their program

Coach Academy Workshops

Coach Academy Introduction

The program will start with an introductory session where coaches will meet their peers, learn more about the details of the program, and meet their mentors

Workshop One: Connecting Values to Philosophy

This workshop will outline the role that values play in finding purpose with coaching. Coaches will learn a framework for identifying values and gaining the perspective that values hold in developing a coaching philosophy Coaches will explore the different values that guide coach behavior and develop their own values that will guide the reasons why they coach There is an online assignment to this workshop that will be required to complete.

Workshop Two: Setting Targets with your Programs

This workshop will provide coaches with a strategy to examine their own program and identify targets that allow them to set effective goals that relate to the development stage of the athletes they work with Coaches will look at their sport from a Long-Term Development Stage perspective and set effective goals for how they will target the technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects of their program There is an online assignment to this workshop that will be required to complete.

Mentorship

Mentorship is an important part of the PSVI Coach Academy It will provide our coaches with insight, advice, and emotional support in their coaching journey. It will also provide our mentors with an opportunity to develop from reflection and connection with the coaches in the program creating a mutually beneficial situation for both mentee (Coach Academy coach) and mentor (PSVI recruited coach)

There are four main elements of mentorship that we will look to highlight in this program These include a) focus on knowledge acquisition, b) support and assistance with career development, c) be mutually beneficial for mentee and mentor, and d) involve direct interaction between mentor and mentee

In each phase, mentors and mentees will have two meetings to check-in, discuss current coaching roles, and develop a relationship that focuses on career and psychosocial support for both the mentee and mentor

Semester 2: The Coaching Environment |

January-March 2023

Semester 2 of the Coach Academy will provide education on how the coach creates an environment where their athletes can learn and reach the potential in their sport. Content in this phase will provide information on how coaches can effectively lead and work with their athletes, develop effective coaching styles, and best strategies to plan and organize a program.

NCCP Design a Basic Sport Program (Competition – Introduction):

This course will provide education on the key pieces of developing a sport program Coaches who complete this module be able to develop a program structure based on opportunities for training and competition, establish indicators of athlete development in the program, and develop practice plans that reflect seasonal training priorities.

NCCP Teaching and Learning (Competition – Introduction):

This course will provide coaches with effective ways to teach athletes Coaches who complete this module will assess their own beliefs regarding effective teaching, analyze certain coaching situations to determine if they promote learning, and create conditions that promote learning and self-esteem, use teaching assessment grids to gather objective information on teaching effectiveness, and use this data to develop an action plan to enhance your own effectiveness as a teacher and coach.

Coach Academy Workshops

Winter Workshop One: Creating Culture

This workshop will provide education on the different coaching styles and approaches coaches can take when working with their athletes This workshop will focus on how – the specific actions – coaches can take when working with their athletes and provide rationale why certain coaching styles are preferred to create a positive environment where athletes are empowered to take risk, ask good questions, and take ownership over their development. There is an online assignment to this workshop that will be required to complete

Special Topic: Inclusion in Sport with Dr. Shaunna Taylor

Dr. Shaunna Taylor, PhD, will provide a guest lecture on the role of inclusion in coaching practice Dr Taylor is the Executive Director of PacificSport Okanogan, a Registered Clinical Counsellor and is a Mental Performance Consultant with the Canadian Sport Psychology Association She is a leader in the BC sport sector, and will provide invaluable insight for specific strategies to coaches on how to navigate the changing landscape of sport

I-SPARC Truth and Reconciliation Workshop

Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (I·SPARC) is a provincial organization established with the purpose of improving the health outcomes of Indigenous peoples by supporting and encouraging physically active individuals, families, and communities. The programs and services delivered by I·SPARC are designed to build capacity and increase access to sport, recreation, and physical activity in First Nations communities, Métis Chartered Communities, Aboriginal Friendship Centres, schools, and other delivery agencies throughout the province

I-SPARC will provide our program with a workshop focusing on the role that sport plays in Truth and Reconciliation in Canada

Mentorship

Coaches will have two sessions with their assigned Mentor

Semester 3: Coaching that Inspires | April-May 2023

Semester 3 of the Coach Academy will involve education on different aspects of sport development Coaches will be provided with content as it relates to healthy development principles as well as education on video analysis, mental performance, and best practices in developing healthy team dynamics

NCCP Basic Mental Skills (Competition – Introduction):

This course will provide coaches with some introductory strategies to help their athletes develop mental skills in their sport Coaches who complete this course will recognize signs indicating that an athlete may need to improve their goal setting, focus, and anxiety control skills, and develop tools to help the athlete to make improvements in these areas; and run simple guided activities that help athletes improve basic mental skills.

International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport - Video Analysis Level-1

Coaches will be learn to carry out in-depth video and data analysis based on: competition analysis, opposition analysis, individual and team analysis, technical and tactical analysis, athlete-driven analysis, and coaching behavior analysis

Use and manage many aspects of video, computer and cloud technologies associated with in-depth analysis provision

Structure and manage team, unit, and individual player feedback sessions

Develop and manage the coaching team-analyst relationship in order to maximize the impact of the video and data analysis being carried out.

Deal with all other factors impacting on the analysis within the player development and match analysis environments

Upon completion coaches will be awarded ISPAS Level-1 Accreditation as an Applied Performance Analyst and will receive an ISPAS annual membership fee and a 12-month license for the Focus video analysis software free of charge (usual cost of $1,110).

Coach Academy Workshops

Workshop One: Mental Performance and Coaching

This workshop will focus on education around key psychological characteristics that are important for developing athletes to acquire. The content will focus on education around the different types of characteristics that are important for athletes, as well as strategies that coaches can deliver to support their athletes in these important areas

Workshop Two: Developing Your Coaching Philosophy

Coaches will complete a professional development plan that will outline their understanding of the education provided in the program Coaches will complete a professional development plan that outlines their next steps in their coaching pathway. Coaches will identify goals and strategies they need to complete to advance in their coaching role, as well as outline specific elements of their philosophy that will describe how they coach in line with their values.

Mentorship

Coaches will have two sessions with their assigned Mentor

Graduation

All Coach Academy participants will receive a PacificSport Vancouver Island Coach Academy Certificate There will be a social event to celebrate their achievements

PacificSport VI Coach Academy Application Process

The PSVI Coach Academy will be open for applications in mid June each year, and applications will be accepted through September each year

The application form will ask questions pertaining to coaching experience, goals, availability, and coach education. All coaches are welcome to apply, no matter their level of coach experience or education! There are no prerequisites to apply other than a desire to improve your coaching game, however once accepted the successful applicants will need to complete two prerequisites prior to beginning coursework These are: Safe Sport (Online Course) & a Completed Criminal Record Check (including Children & Vulnerable Adults)

The application form will ask for two attachments: a resume highlighting education and coaching experience, and a cover letter explaining your desire to coach and your interest in the program. Please have these saved as PDF documents before beginning the application so that you can easily attach them

PacificSport VI Coach Academy Cost & Funding Options

The PSVI Coach Academy is an all-inclusive investment of $1,250.00.

The $1,250.00 total payment from each coach is significantly offset by a discount offered by PacificSport Vancouver Island We are proud to invest in our dedicated coaches and are confident that their participation in the PacificSport VI Coach Academy will strengthen the regional coaching landscape

PacificSport Vancouver Island will be happy to work with successful applicants to create payment plans spread over the course of the year-long academy

Coaches are also encouraged to speak with their local sport organizations to inquire about funding for coach education or scholarships! Many clubs will be happy to help contribute some funds towards coach education

Thanks to generous support from our partners at Island Savings and True Sport, upon successful completion of the program each coach will receive a minimum $250 rebate (paid by cheque) This is money that can be used at their discretion for their future coaching goals.
