FLOURISHING AS ONE

Bless this school, O Lord we pray
Make it safe by night and day
Bless these pupils, bright and gay
Keep them out of evil’s way
Bless the teachers, Lord, we ask
May they find joy in their task
Bless the clerks and servants too
May they serve Thee ever true
May we by Thee guided be
From now till eternity
Bless those who belong to Thee
May they continue to be
Ever faithful, ever kind
Letting God’s light in them shine
Bless us all that we may be
Fit, O Lord, to dwell with thee
Bless us all that we one day
May dwell, O Lord, with Thee
A world has opened for us
A world that’s bright and gay
A world that’s full of interest
Since to school we found our way
It’s a world that’s full of gladness
And we’re happy all the day
And we learn that only busy folks
Can be bright and true and gay
It’s at Fairfield, at Fairfield
Where all the world is bright
Where love is in the sunshine
And our hearts are gay and light
Oh! It’s Fairfield, at Fairfield
Where all the world is bright
Where love is in the sunshine
And our hearts are gay and light
There we live and work and study
There we walk in wisdom’s ways
Gaining strength for all the future
Far and near we’ll sing thy praise
May blessings be upon thee
May many find thy halls
May the leaders of the future
Be found within thy walls
Here’s to Fairfield, to Fairfield
To every student here
To every happy fairsian
And to every teacher dear
Oh! It’s Fairfield, at Fairfield
Where all our hearts are light
Where love is in the sunshine
And all the world is bright

CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating class of 2023!
I extend this message to all of us because, regardless of whether we are graduating from school or not, each of us will be graduating from the challenges faced this year, and we should congratulate one another for overcoming them.
While we may not know what 2024 holds, whether we are young or old, in school or at home, in the office or in church, life will inevitably bring both challenges and opportunities. Whatever the future holds, I pray that you will find courage and inspiration by reflecting on the Bible verse that your school has highlighted this year:
“I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
The God who started Fairfield Methodist School 135 years ago is the same God who will help us remain Pure & Honest, and to Flourish as One Fairfield —past, present, and future. May God be your strength and joy always.
Amen.

135 years ago, when our visionary founder Sophia Blackmore first persuaded the Chinese Peranakan families to send their girls to school to receive an education, she certainly did not imagine that the school she wanted to start would become one of the nation’s most popular and well-established schools. Most certainly, she could not have imagined that a hundred years down the road, education for girls would be prized as highly as for boys!
Indeed, the years have brought along many changes. There have been changes that were dramatic and drastic. There have been changes for the better. There have also been changes that we might not be comfortable with for a while. However, the ONE constant that we have is our God who has been ever so gracious and good to our beloved Fairfield family! From one generation to the next, we will declare His mighty works in the lives of our students, their families, and the community, and we will sing of His goodness and loving kindness to us all.
The ‘Oh!It’sFairfield! Carnival 2023’ was a signature event that brought the Fairfield family together. Thousands of alumni converged in jubilant celebration, rekindling the flames of Fairfield camaraderie that have fueled the school for many decades. Beneath the sweltering sun (#loveisinthesunshine), Fairfield embraced its community, hosting beneficiaries from the Special Needs community and the SouthWest CDC, embodying the ethos of being a blessing to those around us (#blessedtobeablessing).
In the delightful spectacle of ‘Fairfield! the Musical’, we discovered anew the heartbeat of our school — the relationships that make us unique. The misadventures, discoveries, and uncanny encounters of a group of students brought to the fore the Fairsian spirit that binds us all. Through four sold-out performances, the narrative unfolded, and the multi-generational audience experienced the love, memories, friendships, and legacies of Fairfield. Not only was it a powerful performance, but the musical was also a showcase of the prodigious talents that are found within the walls of our schools.
The 135th Founder’s Day was another memorable event to cap the year of celebrations. As the whole school got together to give thanks to God for His love and favour, one cannot help but marvel at how great a blessing the school has been to so many Fairsians young and old. It is because Fairsians have been so richly blessed that the call to contribute to the community and nation rings louder.
As Fairfield flourishes and continues to be blessed, we will endeavour to be a blessing to the nation and, dare I say, the region.
May we continue to be ever faithful and ever kind, Letting God’s Light in (us) shine!
To God be the glory!
Mr Kelvin Ong President of the Fairfield Methodist Schools Alumni Association
Greetings to you from The Fairfield Methodist Schools Alumni Association!
I want to first and foremost give thanks to God for a fruitful and exciting 2023 during which we celebrated His goodness and faithfulness to Fairfield over the past 135 years. What a journey it has been, from our school’s founding by Ms. Sophia Blackmore in 1888 to where we are today, equipping generation after generation of Fairsians with holistic Christian education and moulding our ‘leaders of the future’, just as we sing in our school song.
We began our 2023 calendar with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our Alumni Association on Saturday, 18th February. Prior to the AGM, we hosted a lunch reception to welcome new Alumni Association members who joined us over the past two years. 20 new members, along with our 2022 Management Committee, as well as our two Principals, Mr. Wee Tat Chuen (FMS(S)) and Mdm. Law Li Mei (FMS(P)), were present. Mdm. Law Li Mei also delivered a presentation about our Primary School and addressed questions from Alumni parents who were keen to enrol their child at Fairfield. Subsequently, an election of the Alumni Management Committee Members (2023-2024) was conducted, and the elected members, along with the school representatives who were nominated by our respective Primary and Secondary schools, were duly chosen.

A major activity in the first half of 2023 to kick off our 135th anniversary celebration was our Oh!It’sFairfield! Carnival, which took place on Saturday, 29th April 2023. This carnival is special, as it takes place only once every five years. We collaborated with both of our schools and rallied our Alumni members and community to support our fundraising effort, either through purchasing carnival tickets or volunteering at our food and drinks stall. We sold $10,000 worth of carnival tickets and achieved $7,000 in sales from both our stalls. In addition, we donated an additional $2000 in cash to our schools for the carnival. We want to express our appreciation
for all the help rendered to us by our volunteers as well as our sponsors.
During the carnival, we also hosted around 20 alumni/retired staff for lunch, treating them to a selection of Japanese and Korean cuisines managed by both our Alumni Association and our School’s Board of Management.
One of the key objectives of our Alumni Association is to cultivate a true spirit of loyalty and love for Fairfield. With that intention in mind, our Association launched the annual Alumni Education Award in 2023 to recognise a Fairfield alumnus who has demonstrated a passion for learning and loyalty to Fairfield.
I am happy to announce that the first recipient of our inaugural Alumni Education Award 2023 is Ms Liesl Ann Wong. She is a member of our Alumni Association and is currently studying at the National University of Singapore. She received the $3000 cash award from our Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing, during our 135th Founder’s Day Service on 4th August 2023.
The highlight of our 135th Founder’s Day Celebration must certainly be our annual Founder’s Day Dinner hosted by our Alumni Association, held on the evening of 4th August 2023, at Orchard Hotel. The theme for our dinner this year was ‘A Sparkling Evening of Glitz & Glam’.
More than 500 alumni, staff, and guests in attendance that evening were serenaded by a live band performance throughout the dinner. Special guests who attended the dinner included our former principals: Mrs. Tang Poh Kim, Ms. Audrey Chen, Ms. Elaine Lim, and Ms. Dorothy Ho. Guests also took the opportunity to catch up with one another. That memorable evening could never be complete without all of us singing our School Song, School Hymn, and, of course, the birthday song for Fairfield.
Our Alumni Association also organised a ‘Hotdog Buns’ Day both for the graduating Secondary 4 and 5 students at FMS(S) on 22 September 2023 and for the Primary 6 students on 13 October 2023 to bless them with food and drinks. This event served as our Alumni Association’s way of conveying to our graduating students that we are always with them as they move on to the next phase of their educational journey.
We concluded our 2023 Alumni events with a Christmas caroling session on Saturday, 9 December 2023. The carolers visited and sang at the homes of our alumni teachers and principal. We were delighted to resume our caroling session this year after a hiatus of three years due to the pandemic.
On that note, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all current members of the Alumni Association Management Committee in my sixth year as the President. I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Joni Ong, Chairperson of the Fairfield Board of Management, as well as to the esteemed Board Members, Principals, VicePrincipals, Parents, Community Partners, and staff from Fairfield Methodist Schools (Primary and Secondary). I would also like to thank all alumni members and well-wishers for their unwavering support and faith in the work of our Alumni Association.
Let us always “give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; his love endures forever” (1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV)). May the good Lord continue to bless our beloved Fairfield in 2024 and beyond.
Mdm Law Li Mei Principal
It is with great joy and gratitude that we share the incredible milestone of celebrating 135 years of God’s faithfulness over Fairfield. This year, our theme ‘Flourishing as ONE Fairfield’ holds profound meaning as it reflects our unwavering commitment to nurturing the holistic well-being of our devoted staff and students.
Fairfield’s rich history, steeped in a dedication to serving others, is a wellspring of inspiration. From the founding days led by Miss Sophia Blackmore to the present, the heartwarming stories of donors, parents, board members, and chaplains rallying behind our mission form the very foundation upon which Fairfield proudly stands. The musical production ‘Fairfield! The Musical!’ was a testament to our vision of retelling the Fairfield legacy through the stories, songs, and talents of our Fairsians. We are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support of the Fairfield community, who contributed in every small way, making the journey, not just a production, a canvas for students to paint enduring memories and learn invaluable lessons of teamwork, service, and love for our school. The ‘Oh!It’sFairfield!’ carnival also brought together all the stakeholders on a day of sheer enjoyment and fun, being one as a family. The funds raised through this carnival also enabled the school to carry out improvement works around the school that would enhance the teaching and learning experiences for our staff and students. The Founder’s Day Service, graced by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education, showed the unity of the primary and secondary schools coming together to honour and give thanks to God for His many blessings to the schools.
Innovation in teaching and learning remains a constant focus for our dedicated faculty. Elevating the level and standards of teaching
and learning for the holistic development of our students is our educators’ core mission. Through innovative practices and the adept use of technology, our teachers craft fun and engaging lessons across all subjects, tirelessly honing their craft. This dedication has not gone unnoticed, and we are heartened to share that our Head of Department (Information and Communications Technology), Ms Chen Siyun, has been honoured with the prestigious President’s Award for Teachers. Beyond accolades and achievements, our commitment to instilling core values remains unwavering. Our students have continued to do well and excel, according to their personal best, both academically and in their CCAs. But what we take most pride in is to witness our students’ overcome setbacks with resilience and perseverance, embodying the values of respect, integrity, and determination that they carry forward into their future.
As I reflect on my eight years of service at Fairfield, my heart is filled with gratitude for the incredible support from those who have made this journey so memorable. Serving Fairfield has been an utmost privilege, and I am indebted to the many people, among them our board members, Parents in Education, Alumni Association, chaplains etc. who stood beside me all the time in providing guidance, advice and most important their prayers. I am immensely grateful to our team of excellent and caring staff who support not just the students’ learning, but each other’s development and well-being. I am also humbled to be served by my team of operations support staff who take care of the running of the whole school, often unseen. I thank God for every one of you. Witnessing the growth of our children and teachers has been my constant source of inspiration as I draw on their boundless energy and collective wisdom in leading the school. I thank God for the abundant blessings received, and as I embark on the next chapter of my journey, I trust that wherever He leads me, He will equip me to carry out His purpose.
May this prayer extend to Fairfield as well – that God will richly provide our beloved Fairfield with His abundant resources, love and blessings to bring His vision for the school to fruition.
To God be all Glory!
Mr Wee Tat Chuen Principal
The theme for the school in 2023, as we celebrate our 135th anniversary, is ‘Flourishing as ONE Fairfield’. Flourishing embodies the idea of individuals realising their potential and becoming a blessing to others. ONE Fairfield serves as a reminder of the supportive community that exists here, where everyone helps one another.
From her beginning days in 1884, Fairfield has grown from an initial enrolment of 8 Nonya girls to its current enrolment of more than 1000 boys and girls.
It was not without any trepidation that we started this year with some milestones in mind – the combined schools’ carnival, musical and Founder’s Day service. We were concerned about the workload for staff and students, yet mindful that this is a special year worth celebrating and giving thanks to God for. Looking back, I cannot be prouder of our staff and students who not only survived the year but flourished as they embraced the responsibility of planning, organising and executing the various programmes scheduled for the year! This would not have been possible without the proactive and supportive contributions of our Fairfield Alumni, Parent Support Group (also known as Parents in Education in Fairfield), Aldersgate Methodist Church and Holy Covenant Methodist Church.
In celebrating our 135th anniversary, it was also apt that we did so in the context of the school’s refreshed vision and values. It is considered refreshed because it is not a departure from our roots and traditions, but because it is the result of our collective thoughts, hopes and aspirations for Fairfield in the years ahead.
School Vision:
A Flourishing Community of Self-Directed Learners, Influential Leaders and Caring Citizens
School Values: Purity and Honesty. Unity. Resilience. Excellence
A Flourishing Community
We desire for the school to be a flourishing community where every member is valued and supported. Our approach is best described in three words – Connect, Nurture, and Inspire. Embedded within this approach are three key ideas:
• Connecting lives through relationship building and facilitating experiences of positive emotions
• Nurturing engagement through effective design and implementation towards accomplishment
• Inspiring passion through stretched and meaningful experiences
Self-Directed Learners
We launched the Sec 3 FLEX Challenge in 2023 as part of the school’s efforts to nurture self-directed learners. All Sec 3 students had the opportunity to choose a challenge and then come together to train and prepare to overcome these challenges. This programme saw students venturing into drone programming and flying, sustainability experiments, vlogging, urban sketching, Model United Nations and many other exciting activities.
We are excited to witness our students’ growth through this challenge and other programmes we have put in place. We look forward to our students taking even greater ownership of their learning on various fronts!
Influential Leaders
We have started on our school’s leadership thematic approach where we emphasise 4 leadership practices that integrate the school values as well. These practices are adapted from Kouzes and Posner’s work on The Leadership Challenge. These are Modelling Purity and Honesty; Encouraging Hearts and Enabling Unity; Stewarding Growth and Strengthening Resilience; and Inspiring Peaks of Excellence.
Through the Sophia Blackmore Student Leadership Programme, we aim to inspire class leaders and CCA leaders to exert positive influence over their peers and juniors. Over the next few years, we want to encourage greater ownership among our student leaders in shaping the school’s positive tone for discipline and learning.
Caring Citizens
Our carnival this year was premised on the idea of being a blessing as we have been blessed by God and many others over the last 135 years. In line with this, we extended our outreach to St. John’s – St. Margaret’s Nursing Home and Grace Orchard School, and identified families in the South West Community Development Council, various special needs communities and social enterprises.
Our students had the opportunity to learn more about the needs in our community and were blessed to play a part in making a difference through various means.
All of us for all our Fairsians
This is a formative time for our Fairsians. We want to do what we can for them to be stretched holistically – character growth and learning must go hand in hand. It is hard work, but we are excited about the vision we have.
It is a vision where everyone is a self-directed learner who knows his or her strengths and interests; where everyone is an influential leader in areas that he or she is deeply convicted about; and where everyone is a caring citizen in deep and effective ways such that they will show kindness, care, and love at every opportunity.
Achieving this requires the dedication of all staff at Fairfield, but more than that, it requires the involvement of every parent, every alumnus and every stakeholder we can get to come on board. Most importantly, we look to God for truly ‘unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain’.
May all glory be to Him!

Ariel joined the school’s Handbell Ensemble at Primary 2 in 2019. Since then, she has approached each training session with unwavering enthusiasm. In 2020 when Covid-19 changed the way CCAs were conducted, Ariel adapted to the change and never missed any of the online sessions.
In her 4th year with the team, Ariel was chosen to lead the team. She accepted this leadership role with enthusiasm and set a positive tone for the team, leading by example. She is a source of inspiration to her team members and always strives to do her best in all assignments. She concludes training sessions with reminders and encouragement for the team.
Ariel uses her intelligent reasoning to excel and is not afraid to seek clarifications when in doubt. She is receptive to feedback from instructors and teachers, willingly discusses her areas of weaknesses, and actively takes steps to improve herself.
Ariel displays sincerity and respect in her interactions with her peers. She builds good rapport with all and takes the extra effort to help new ringers integrate into the team. She guides her fellow ringers and takes the initiative to help those who are lost. She also connects with her ringers and encourages them when she observes those who are feeling stressed out. This was especially evident in the preparation period leading up to ‘Fairfield! The Musical’. When the teachers were also involved in props and costumes and the instructor could not be there throughout the musical rehearsals, Ariel took the initiative to manage the team. She took note of the instructions from the musical director and took the time to post them on Teams. She also made the effort to answer the queries posted by ringers who had missed some of the rehearsals due to other commitments.
Ariel’s humility and willingness to support her peers demonstrate her genuine passion for the ensemble and her desire to see the team excel. She exemplifies the Fairsian outcome of a serving and giving student leader.

Sara Hiap, Primary 6E
Sara Hiap has been part of the Volleyball CCA since Primary 4. Her leadership abilities, independence and perseverance were evident from the moment she first joined us.
Throughout the years, Sara’s unwavering dedication to honing and improving her skills consistently sets her apart from her peers. She attended all CCA sessions for three years, always putting in her best effort in both trainings and competitions.
Above all, it is her humility and her heart to serve that win the support of her peers and teachers. In her role as the girls’ team captain, Sara collaborates well with everyone and never holds back in supporting and helping others. All other members in the CCA look up to her as a role model due to her caring and approachable nature.
Sara manages multiple roles both in and outside of school. She is a key member of the executive committee of the Prefectorial Board, playing a significant role in overseeing daily assemblies and managing various school projects. Her strong leadership skills and unwavering commitment to service are also demonstrated through her service in the Prefectorial Board.
In addition to school commitments, Sara actively participates in external bouldering and rock-climbing competitions. She embraces the discipline required of any sport and demonstrates a high level of dedication to all of them.
We firmly believe Sara will be an asset wherever life takes her, wherever she is planted.

Chloe encountered an unfortunate accident in the middle of the year during a swim lesson on a weekend. She suffered a deep gash on her sole and was rushed to the hospital for surgery. Upon discharge, her foot required an air boot as she could not bear weight on it. She learnt how to use the crutches and had to be pushed around in a wheelchair too.
During that time, Chloe was already part of the main cast of ‘Fairfield! The Musical’. Despite the mobility challenges she faced, she displayed exceptional resilience by never missing a rehearsal and never expressing any complaints about her situation. Instead, she showed resilience by pressing on with the musical; her physical condition also meant that her role had to be modified as she could not walk. She adapted to the changes and learnt how to portray her role while being on stage.
Simultaneously juggling hospital follow-ups, Chloe also dedicated time to her studies, preparing for the P6 Preliminary Exams and PSLE. She was open to feedback from her teachers whenever they pointed out an area for improvement.
Chloe has shown resilience and maturity by focusing on what she needed to achieve. She has demonstrated positivity and strength in character by pressing on with her role in the school musical.

Lyu Jiayi, Primary
Jiayi embodies the Fairsian outcomes through her belief in hard work and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Jiayi joined the school when she was in Primary 3. She could hardly speak a word of English then. Realising that she could not understand her lessons, teachers and classmates, she started studying the English Language intensively. She stayed back to attend reading support lessons and diligently practised the English Language using assessment books meant for preschoolers. She was not ashamed to read books meant for younger children, and watched and listened to as much content in English Language as possible. In the first year, her progress was unimpressive and she struggled to communicate in English with her peers and teachers. However, she continued to persevere and pushed herself to attain her goal of doing well in school. By the end of Primary 4, she was speaking English fluently and writing compositions with good structures and meaningful plots.
In upper primary, Jiayi demonstrated confidence in communicating in English and even represented the school to present artworks to representatives from the Ministry of Education, fielding questions from them on the spot with confidence.
Jiayi also has a big heart in the way she had served her class as class monitor in Primary 5 by ensuring that the class was in order before she left for recess. She is always willing to lend a hand. She has also shown care towards her classmate who had to use a wheelchair by fetching her from the porch in the morning daily and accompanying her after school by waiting with her for her transport. Jiayi would then return the wheelchair to the General Office before heading home.
We are proud of how Jiayi has blossomed in the hallowed halls of our school. She has shown us how her belief in a better tomorrow has brought about her progress. She has also shown us that hard work and diligence pay off.

The Oh!It’sFairfield! Carnival was a resounding success, as it embodied the essence of unity and gratitude. This intergenerational celebration brought together students, parents, teachers, alumni, and friends to enjoy a plethora of games and food. This fundraising event not only commemorated Fairfield’s 135th anniversary but also showcased the community’s strong bonds. From the meticulous planning to the heartwarming presence of the entire Fairfield Family, every aspect of the carnival reflected the collective effort and unwavering dedication of our flourishing One Fairfield community.
To commemorate and celebrate Fairfield Methodist Schools’ 135th Founder’s Day, both schools consisting of cast from Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) and Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) collaborated to stage a musical titled Fairfield! The Musical.
Fairfield! The Musical was held on 28 to 29 July 2023 with four repeated shows at 2.30pm (Matinee) and 7.30pm (Night Show). The Gala Night was held on 29 July 2023 with Guest-of-Honour, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, gracing the occasion.
This musical was organised to express our heartfelt gratitude to God for protecting Fairfield Methodist Schools over 135 years. We are thankful to have received so many positive reviews and to know that the musical has touched the hearts of our audiences, including current and former Fairsians, by rekindling cherished memories with its captivating narrative.
Through the story, it was curated with the vision to honour the profound legacies of our visionary founder and strong school leaders. Their selfless contributions have paved the way for our success, and it is now our turn to continue the tradition of giving back to society. We are thankful to God for ensuring safety throughout the musical process, and friendships have been forged between the participating students of both schools, with shared memories to last a lifetime!
To God Be The Glory!
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
Psalm 104: 33
Fairfield celebrated her 135th Founder’s Day with Mr. Chan Chun Sing, the Minister for Education, as our distinguished Guest of Honour at our Founder’s Day morning service. The event showcased the talent of our Fairfield Schools’ Combined Choir, National Cadet Corps’ Precision Drill Squad, and Fairfield Methodist School (Primary)’s Handbell Ensemble. We thank God for His favour, unwavering faithfulness, and abundant blessings over our 135-year journey. May the Fairfield legacy continue to flourish!
The annual National Day celebrations at FMS(P) hold immense significance, instilling a sense of national identity, pride, and unity in students and teachers alike.
The theme for 2023 called for all Singaporeans to look forward confidently and move onward together in building our shared future as one united people. The celebration kicked off with a solemn observance ceremony, followed by engaging activities such as rifle drill performances and community singing.
As a school, we are grateful for the opportunity to come together to celebrate, forging stronger connections and a shared sense of belonging.
The collective spirit of FMS(S) shone brightly as we came together to celebrate our nation’s 58th birthday. Our very own National Day Parade was a spectacle that created an unmistakable atmosphere of pride with disciplined marches and resounding cheers. The school hall also buzzed with energy during the exhilarating concert, where talented students captivated us with mesmerising performances. Our Community Student Leaders added excitement with an interactive game, while the Teachers’ Band led a heartfelt grand finale which united everyone’s voices in love for our nation.
We ushered in the Year of the Rabbit with staff and students dressed in their festive best. Embracing Chinese traditions, our students gathered to create Chinese New Year decorative art and crafts as part of their classroom activities. Following this, all staff and students assembled in the school hall for a variety of performances as part of our Chinese New Year celebrations, culminating in a mass singing of Chinese New Year songs.
FMS(S) welcomed Chinese New Year through a unique Multi-Ethnic Celebration! Notable highlights included a Dikir Barat workshop conducted by Kelana Purba, a lively Bollywood dance performance by Dance Channel Singapore, and an exhilarating wushu display presented by students from Chung Cheng High School (Main). This memorable event was indeed a joyful celebration of our multicultural community and festive spirit.
2023 was a memorable year of fun and fellowship for our staff! In addition to sharing many memories from the Oh!It’sFairfield! Carnival and Fairfield! The Musical, our staff had numerous shared experiences – enjoying durians at the school canteen, celebrating various festivities, sweating it out on the school track, and spending afternoons on learning journeys to organisations which we can glean insights from as we continue to develop the Fairsian Outcomes in our students.
2023 was a year of intentional flourishing through connecting, nurturing and inspiring one another. The staff of FMS(S) came together at the Staff Retreat. It was a good time of reflection as we wrapped up the year and shared how we would be moving forward as one. We were reminded of the importance of laying strong foundations: to remain steadfast in what has worked well and persevere towards positive change. We played exciting games, affirmed one another and said our welcomes and goodbyes.
Teachers’ Day is an annual celebration dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions of our educators. This year, we celebrated Teachers’ Day on 31 August 2023 (Thursday).
In the lead-up to this significant day, our Parents-in-Education (PiEs) set up a booth within the foyer, providing opportunities for students to express gratitude to their teachers through notes during various recess periods. These heartfelt notes were later curated into an expressive board display, serving as a token of appreciation to our teachers. Additionally, the celebration included a student-led concert organised by our student leaders. This thoughtfully organised and engaging performance added an extra layer of delight to the day’s proceedings. To conclude this wonderful day, former students returned to Fairfield, rekindling connections and sharing well-wishes with their past mentors.
FMS(S) celebrated Teachers’ Day with a memorable concert organised by our student leaders which featured captivating musical performances, graceful dances, interactive games, and heartwarming videos. The entire school community was immersed in a morning of appreciation, reflecting on the unwavering commitment and hard work that our Fairfield teachers put in each day! Indeed, every teacher deserves to be celebrated and applauded for playing a pivotal role in shaping every Fairsian’s life.
Fairfield’s Children’s Day celebrations took place on 5 October 2023 (Thursday). The event featured engaging classroom activities, an assembly programme themed ‘Perfect Harmony’ for Lower Primary students, a captivating Monkey King Chinese Opera concert for Upper Primary students, and various sports activities organised for all students. A delightful bunny mascot went around the school for photo sessions with the students, bringing much joy to them. To enhance the experience, students were treated to childhood favourite biscuits as snacks.
FMS(S) marked the conclusion of Term 1 with an exciting Sports Day at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The day featured an inter-CCA relay, exciting races for the Secondary 1 students, a spirited tugof-war contest amongst Secondary 2 classes, Captain’s Rugby for Secondary 3 pupils, and softball for the Secondary 4 and 5 students. The event ended with a memorable relay featuring teachers and parents.
The FMS(P) CCA programme provides students with a platform to discover their interests and talents, as well as to cultivate core values, social and emotional competencies, and emerging 21st Century Competencies. CCAs also emphasize social interactions by providing a common space for friendships and integration among students of diverse backgrounds.

The members of our Basketball CCA are exposed to drills such as lay-ups and footwork. During training, they learn the importance of good sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork, resilience, responsibility, and discipline.
This year, our Junior Boys and Girls participated in the National Sports Games (NSG) 2023. We are proud to announce that both teams have emerged first runners-up in the National Competition Tier 1.
We will strive to continue to be a place where our members can grow and hone their skills in basketball through training and matches.

The FMS(P) Concert Band embarked on an extraordinary musical journey, creating endearing memories for its members. A standout moment was their performance during the school assembly, where their dedication and talent shone for the entire school community.
Their musical journey extended beyond, culminating in a remarkable joint concert with the FMS(S) Band at the prestigious Singapore Conference Hall. This collaboration marked a significant milestone for both bands, captivating the audience with their melodious tunes. Students not only performed but also admired the mesmerising pieces presented by the FMS(S) Band as enthusiastic audience members, fueling their own musical aspirations. The concert, the first since 2016, highlighted the resilience, commitment, and teamwork of these young musicians.

One of the highlights in 2023 was the inaugural one-day holiday programme held on 30 May in school. A total of 50 children, comprising our CF students, our Praise teams, and their siblings, attended the programme. The theme was ‘Our Identity in Christ,’ and the speaker Ms Mary-Anne Lim shared her personal testimony. She also led the children in craftwork as a way of affirming and remembering their worth in Christ. Following that, Ms Amanda facilitated the outdoor bubbleplay session, where the children had a fun time creating bubbles of different sizes and shapes.
Thanks be to God for the wonderful and memorable experience for the children.

The Community Student Leaders (CSLs) started a few meaningful partnerships in 2023 that we hope to continue in the future. Notably, we have established new collaborations with organisations such as It’s Raining Raincoats and FaithActs. Through our partnership with FaithActs, we were able to engage young students from their after-school care centre during homework sessions and Science enrichment activities. In 2023, the CSLs were also able to plan the Student Leaders’ Investiture, providing them with a valuable opportunity to put their organisational skills into practice. Lastly, we actively participated once again in the One Million Trees Challenge by NParks, with 40 Fairsians coming together to plant 50 flowering shrubs along Dover Rise.

The Peer Support Board (PSB) aims to create an inclusive environment and a culture of care in Fairfield. We resumed our overnight Peer Support Camp where newly appointed Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) learnt about supporting their peers in areas of well-being and cohesion through purposeful games and activities facilitated by the PSB. Additionally, the PSB launched campaigns such as the Digital Detox Week and Peer Support Week to promote positive digital habits, enhance awareness of time management, and encourage Fairsians to be better friends. In August, the PSB facilitated the Fairfield Talkshow during a level assembly, where they shared about issues pertinent to different levels, such as managing expectations and focus, through interactive activities. In 2023, the PSLs in each class were also empowered to regularly share relevant well-being tips with their classmates, in addition to championing the annual Class of the Year Competition. Together with the PSLs, the PSB continued to spread the spirit of peer support and a caring culture throughout the school.

In 2023, we commemorated our 40th anniversary, a milestone marked by a series of significant events. A notable highlight was the 40th anniversary dinner, held in February at PARKROYAL on Beach Road. This occasion provided our Boys with the opportunity to connect with alumni spanning four decades, fostering a sense of shared history and creating new memories. During the March Holidays, the Sec 3 Boys participated in a 2-day Kayaking Star 1 Course, while the Sec 1 and Sec 2 Boys underwent the same course during the June Holidays. Our participation in the National Competitions — Blaze in April and Character Quest in August — yielded outstanding results, with the Company achieving the Gold Honour Roll in both competitions. To deepen the appreciation of Singapore’s history among our cadets and encourage reflection on their roles in the nation’s military defence, the Secondary 3 Cadet Leaders planned and executed a Learning Journey to Fort Canning Park in Term 1 for the entire unit. Prior to the event, two site reconnaissances were conducted to identify suitable activity stations. The leaders also conducted a lesson for the juniors on the historical significance of Fort Canning, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding and appreciation of Singapore’s progress in her military defence journey.
On 3 March 2023, approximately 50 cadets embarked on the learning journey, engaging in trivia quizzes and immersive activities at different locations in the Park. After the learning journey, a reflection was conducted. In addition to providing participants with a heightened appreciation of Singapore’s history through a site visit, the Cadet Leaders gained insights into event planning processes, the importance of coordination among platoon mates, and the need for adaptability in the face of changing situations.

The Red Cross Youth had the privilege of participating in the annual First Aid Competition and conducting its yearly Leadership Training Camp. Held in mid-January, the 2023 First Aid Competition marked a significant milestone for all our cadets. Divided into three teams, the cadets underwent a rigorous training programme to refine their first aid and disaster management skills, fostering numerous friendships and bonds. The unit looks forward to participating in the 2024 First Aid Competition to improve its results and further strengthen the cadets’ bonds. The Leadership Training Camp, equally memorable, provided the Secondary 3 cadets with the opportunity to advance their leadership skills within the unit. Rising to the challenge, they engaged in additional training sessions and independently planned their own camps, honing their management skills in the process. Despite encountering setbacks, the camp served as a platform for the cadets to develop greater resilience. In the end, all cadets agreed that the Leadership Training Camp was an unforgettable experience which they will hold dear to their hearts.

Fairfield English Drama had the privilege of undertaking two significant productions in 2023. In April, we presented our Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) showcase, titled ‘BrainGain’. This self-devised piece, inspired by ‘Brainstorm’, aimed to raise awareness about the development of the teenage brain and its impact on teenagers’ behaviour. Our members were deeply committed to the message of this play, and the Certificate of Distinction awarded to us was a testament to our dedication to the production. To commemorate Fairfield’s 135th birthday in 2023, ‘Fairfield! The Musical’ was produced. Some of our members had the opportunity to participate in this joint production with Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) and collaborate with industry professionals like Dwayne Lau and Elaine Chan. Featuring original music and songs, the musical chronicled the history of Fairfield and celebrated its illustrious legacy.

The Fairfield Symphonic Band (FSB) commenced 2023 with two Band Exchanges, collaborating with budding musicians from other secondary schools to glean insights from peers and prepare for the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation. The dedicated efforts and continuous practices of our members paid off when we achieved the Certificate of Distinction in April. Further refining their musicianship, the band members contributed to the cultural enrichment of the Fairfield Community through a series of school performances, including the the Oh!It’sFairfield! Carnival, National Day Celebrations, and Teachers’ Day Celebrations. In keeping with tradition, our Secondary One members completed their inaugural performance in the Junior Band Recital on 25 August 2023. The evening resonated with gratitude and warmth as we witnessed many parents beaming with pride. FSB concluded 2023 with the annual concert titled ‘Symphonica’ at the Singapore Conference Hall on 11 November 2023. Performing in front of a huge crowd of 600, we extended an invitation to our juniors from Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) to perform as our guest band. The collaboration was immensely enjoyable as we embraced the opportunity to mentor our juniors. We look forward to many more meaningful experiences in 2024!

2023 was a memorable year for the Badminton ‘B’ Division girls, who successfully retained their Third Position in the National School Games (NSG) (Zonal). The girls’ team also welcomed 10 Secondary One Girls into the CCA. Through participating in the NSG, engaging in friendly matches with schools such as New Town Secondary, Edgefield Secondary, and Chiayi County Jhuci Senior High School (Taiwan), and concluding the year with a camp, our girls gained new insights and experience in the CCA. Furthermore, 2023 marked the return of Fairfield boys to the NSG Championship. The boys trained hard and put up a valiant effort in the South Zone matches. The training sessions and termly bonding activities played a pivotal role in fostering unity among the boys. With a cohesive team spirit, the boys are looking forward to a more eventful 2024.

One memorable experience for the Fairfield Basketball team in 2023 was participating in the South Zone Basketball Finals. Following months of rigorous training sessions and tremendous dedication, the Basketball ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division teams, by the grace of God, successfully advanced to the finals. The players showcased their utmost efforts on the court, captivating a lively audience in an electrifying atmosphere. Through this experience, we learnt the importance of teamwork. Even those who were off the court contributed to the team’s success. Furthermore, we developed our family tree system, where each senior was paired with a junior. This not only created a more nurturing environment within the CCA, but also facilitated the development of stronger bonds across different levels. As a result, many seniors who graduated from Fairfield Secondary still willingly return on a regular basis to engage with their juniors by participating in basketball activities together and offering encouragement. This warm family spirit has undoubtedly made this CCA what it is today.

The year 2023 was marked by hard-fought battles, modest achievements, and valuable lessons for our netball team. In addition to our participation in the National School Games, we took part in Deloitte Pesta Sukan 2023 and organised friendly matches with other schools to provide our netballers with opportunities to hone their skills and enhance their competitive play. Facing formidable opponents and dealing with injuries, our players often found themselves as underdogs, grappling with moments of self-doubt. However, it is precisely in the face of adversity that our team discovered its inner strength and unwavering determination. The team’s ability to maintain unity, offer unwavering support to one another, and rebound from setbacks is nothing short of commendable. These qualities inspire us to celebrate the team’s successes and encourage them to reach for greater heights towards breakthrough performances as we continue to make our school proud.

The Fairfield Football teams demonstrated remarkable resolve and resilience, showcasing their best abilities during the 2023 National School Games. The ‘B’ Division team qualified for League 3 and performed admirably, securing a commendable Second Place in the finals. Although the championship eluded us, the team won the hearts of all the supporters who watched the match. The ‘C’ Division team qualified for League 2 and progressed to the quarterfinals, facing the eventual champions at this stage. Despite the outcome, the boys exhibited considerable hard work and effort to improve their fitness and skills. Throughout the season, the boys experienced what it was like to play as a cohesive team, and there were many occasions when they dug deep to achieve a favourable result. This fuelled their passion and drive to train harder for one another.

In Journalism CCA, journalists are given the opportunity to write blurbs and articles on school events and achievements on the One Fairfield Facebook page, Ohit’sfairfield instagram page, In Tandem newsletters and the main feature of the Fairfield website. These are accompanied by the best photos depicting different facets of such occasions and accomplishments. These help to promote school pride and affect amongst all staff, students, parents, alumni and Board of Management. Everyone also gets to engage in fun activities and games like musical chairs, Pictionary, Kahoot and Blooket. These enable our journalists to experience the joy of learning the English Language while fostering stronger bonds. Do visit us on Thursday afternoon at ITR1 to find out more about Journalism CCA!

Additionally, we provide students with the platform to archive and document various school events and run the audio production for main school events. Every year, our students get opportunities to participate in competitions and school showcases/ exhibitions. In 2023, our photographers won the Best Story for the Our Schools, Our Stories Photo Contest. Additionally, our video students secured First Place in the Crea8 Sustainability 2023 video competition. Other key events and competitions we participated in were the #Click Art Cluster showcase and the Singapore Youth Festival event production.

Fairfield Robotics Club provides students with opportunities to pursue their interests and passions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It offers an excellent platform for the development of 21st-century skills, such as innovative and critical thinking, as well as effective communication and collaboration among members. Our members undergo training to deepen their understanding of the mechanics of robot design and movement, which strengthen their analytical and creative thinking skills. Additionally, members develop their logical thinking and refine their programming skills when they learn to design and programme robots using block-based programming to complete their assigned missions. Members who display talent in their skills have the opportunity to represent the school in the annual Innovation, Design, and Engineering (IDE) series in June and the National Robotics Competition (NRC) in September. In 2023, our Robotics Club performed well, with one team securing Fifth Position in the IDE series 2023 Drag Race, and seven teams entering the finals of NRC, with one team clinching First Place for the robot run.
