In a game that had all the makings of a classic, the Jonesboro Lady Eagles softball team proved that grit, heart, and character matter just as much as talent. After surging to a 6-0 lead in the third inning of the 2025 UIL 1A State Championship against Brookeland, momentum shifted dramatically. Brookeland responded with eight unanswered runs, putting Jonesboro on the ropes and testing their resolve. But true to their nature, the Lady Eagles didn’t flinch.

In the game’s final moments, right fielder Landri McFarlin charged a ground ball in shallow right and fired a laser to first, beating a sliding runner to seal a 9-8 win and secure the state title. It was a highlightreel moment, but more importantly, it reflected who this team is at its core—resilient, composed, and unshakably determined.

Still, the real victory didn’t come with a trophy. For Jonesboro, the championship was simply a snapshot of a much larger picture—one that’s been years in the making. More than building a winning team, Jonesboro has been building identity.

Softball as a Starting Point

The mission of the Jonesboro softball program has never been just about winning games. The goal is to equip these young women with tools for life, using softball as the conduit to carry those lessons beyond the field. That belief fuels everything from drills at practice to conversations in the locker room.

The coaching philosophy emphasizes that success in life mirrors success on the field: it’s built on change, discipline, and relentless effort. Coaches encourage each player to embrace change and growth as the path to lasting success. It’s not just about the end result of winning— it’s about who they are becoming in the process.

This team isn’t just made up of athletes. It’s made up of thinkers, leaders, and young women with the confidence to evolve. Through the structure of sports, they’re learning to navigate life’s challenges, adapt to new roles, and invest in long-term growth.

Rooted in Hard Work

Ask anyone close to the program and they’ll tell you: this team works. Whether it’s morning workouts, long practices, or off-season training on select teams, the Lady Eagles know success is earned long before the first pitch. That work ethic defines them—and binds them.

“It’s pretty special to be a part of it,” said the team’s first-year head coach, James Turner. “We plan to enjoy this year, but we’re going to work hard to get a little better. We know we can’t replace the ones we’re losing, but we can grow stronger as a team by working even harder. We’re playing to win.”

Winning, in this sense, isn’t just about the scoreboard. It’s about growth. It’s about progress. And it’s about forming a culture rooted in self-awareness and transformation—cornerstones of lasting success.

The All-State Example

The 2025 Texas Girls Coaches Association 1A All-State roster reads like a roll call of Jonesboro’s lineup: Landri McFarlin, Lynlee Deats, Adalyna Andrade, Emily Turner, Kyleigh Walker, Ella Gustin, Kylee Gould, Ally Thorman, and Julie Henderson. These young women stood out not only for their performance on the diamond but for their character and leadership.

Junior Adalyna Andrade captured the heart of what this journey has meant. “I think this has been an amazing experience that I never thought I would go through. Just to be here with this type of team, this type of bond that we have, is just amazing.”

That bond—the shared commitment to one another, to improvement, and to purpose—is what sets Jonesboro apart. It’s what allows them to face adversity head-on, and it’s what ensures their success doesn’t end with the final out of the season.

A Culture of Growth

Behind the scenes, the Jonesboro community plays a vital role in shaping this culture. Superintendent Matt Dossey, High School Principal Kendra Byrom, and a devoted network of parents, coaches, and mentors support not just the team but the values they stand for.

“These young ladies, the work they have put in—not only in school but out of school—many play all year round on select teams. They have put in hours and hours in batting cages, on fields,” Dossey said. “Their parents have invested time and resources getting them to the places they need to be, individual coaches have poured into them... and we’ve had the good fortune over the last two years of seeing all that hard work, time, effort, and sacrifice pay off.”

That payoff goes well beyond championships. It’s about identity formation—helping young people see who they are and believe in who they can become.

More Than a Scoreboard

Perhaps most telling is the spiritual foundation guiding the team’s mindset. “Our prayer before every game is, no matter what happens, God gets the glory,” Dossey shared. “Whether we win or lose, He is glorified. I think whenever you have that mentality, you can’t lose.”

That perspective reminds the girls that while titles are temporary, character is lasting. “If we hadn’t won a state championship,” he added, “I wouldn’t have thought any less of these young ladies because of their character, their attitudes, and what they’ve put into it. They’re winners. The trophies help to show that, but in the end, they’re all winners.”

Building Identity, Shaping Futures

The 2025 Lady Eagles have carved out a place in school history, but their legacy is not confined to a trophy case. What they’ve really built is a deeper understanding of self. They’ve learned to see change not as something to fear but as something to embrace. They’ve discovered the power of hard work, not for applause but for personal growth. They’ve shown what’s possible when a team commits to something larger than the game.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Dossey and Principal Byrom, Jonesboro ISD continues to champion a vision that sees athletics as an essential tool—not to produce players, but to develop people. The Lady Eagles didn’t just win a title—they built a blueprint for identity, transformation, and what it means to live with purpose.

As they move forward—some into new seasons, some into new chapters of life—they carry something far more valuable than a championship ring. They carry the confidence that they’ve been shaped not just by a game but by a cul-

ture committed to helping them become the best version of themselves.

And there’s no better teacher than experience. As each of them ventures into new adventures, Dossey reminds every student who walks the halls of Jonesboro ISD that they’ll always have a home there.

Congratulations ladies! We're all so proud of you!

Becoming A Foster Parent

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a foster parent? Do you wonder how the process works? Are you getting ready to become a foster parent and still a bit unsure of what to expect when it comes to the logistics? Read on as I discuss a few of the details that will help you determine if you should become a foster parent.

Can a person know upfront whether they would make a good foster parent?

I would answer this question with a question. Does anyone know if they will make a good parent before they’ve had children? I tend to NOT view the ability to be “a good parent” as an innately weaved character trait that people either are or are not born with. Being a good parent, of any type, is a choice. A good parent does not equate to a perfect parent. No matter what kind of parent you are, no one is perfect. Most people define a good parent as someone who loves unconditionally and ensures that their child’s basic needs are met. They exhibit commitment and persevere through the good times and bad times.

Systems and agencies might define a good foster parent as someone who follows the rules and turns their paperwork in on time (there is a lot of it), or someone who says “yes“ more than they say “no“ to placement possibilities. While I have not interviewed any foster children specifically for this article, I can tell you some of the things that they have told me over the years. Foster children might define a good parent as:

A) one that provides a stable home free of abuse

B) one who treats them as a true part of the family, and not as a job

C) One who sticks around through the hard stuff, no matter how hard the child pushes back, rather than kicking them out to yet another home

D) One who does not try to erase or replace their biological family

If you’re wondering if you would make a good foster parent, ask yourself, “am I willing and able to provide a safe and stable home, and will I choose to love unconditionally, even when things are hard?”

Do foster kids have to have their own room?

In the state of Texas, there is no legal requirement that a foster child has to have their own room. However, there are guidelines set forth by the state and individual agencies which one must follow. Foster children do have to have their own bed, adequate space, and opposite genders must be in different rooms. Sometimes there are exceptions to this rule if the children are biological siblings. Children (usually over the age of 1 yr) may not share a room with an adult caregiver.

Does one make money by fostering?

Families or individuals should never choose to do foster care in order to make money. In most cases, there is limited financial assistance that comes from the state. I consider it more of a monthly reimbursement for expenses incurred while you cared for the child. Remember, foster care is not an 8-5 job. You are responsible for the child 24/7.

Do the foster kids get some sort of financial help?

As stated above, in most cases there is financial support available through the state. This money goes directly to the foster parent as a reimbursement of expenses incurred in order to care for the child. There are many groups and organizations which help foster families by providing free supplies during high-cost events such as “back to school” or Christmas. There are also programs to assist young adult foster chidlren aging out of the system and branching out on their own. For assistance with out of the ordinary expenses, such as summer camps or driving school, check with your county’s Child Welfare Board.

Can I foster or adopt if I’m single?

The State of Texas does not have a blanket restriction on allowing single people to become foster parents. Requirements may vary based on individual foster placement agencies. Basic foster parent requirements include being at least 21, financially stable, and being responsible. Individuals also must complete the required training and be able to pass and complete tasks such as a home study and background check.

take a chance Without taking risks, You will never know how far you can go

We all have dreams—some big, some small, but all worthy. Yet far too often, those dreams remain tucked away, stifled by fear, doubt, or the comfort of the familiar. The truth is, growth doesn’t happen in a comfort zone. Progress, discovery, and achievement all begin with a single, sometimes uncertain, step into the unknown. Taking a chance is the key that unlocks your potential.

Risk has always been a part of human progress. From the first explorers who sailed into uncharted waters, to the entrepreneurs who launched companies from garages, history favors the bold. But it doesn’t require an earth-shaking move to make a difference. Sometimes, taking a chance is as simple as saying yes to a new opportunity, voicing your ideas in a meeting,

or picking up the phone to call someone you admire. It’s not about recklessness—it’s about courage.

Fear is a natural response. We’re wired to avoid risk because it often comes with uncertainty. But what if we shifted our mindset? Instead of asking, “What if I fail?” try asking, “What if I fly?” Failure may be a possibility, but so is success. And even in failure, there’s growth, learning, and resilience.

Think about the goals you’ve hesitated to pursue. Maybe you’ve wanted to change careers, start a side business, go back to school, or move to a new city. What’s been holding you back? Often, it’s the fear of the unknown or the weight of other people’s opinions. But remember this—no one else can walk your path

Cherie Carrabba bright

for you. The only person truly affected by your missed chances is you.

Taking a chance doesn’t guarantee an easy road. In fact, it may be bumpy. But the journey itself transforms you. You’ll uncover strengths you didn’t know you had. You’ll meet people who inspire and challenge you. And you’ll gain confidence, knowing you were brave enough to try.

Every success story started with a leap of faith. The student who applied to a school they thought was out of reach. The artist who submitted work to a gallery for the first time. The single parent who started a business to create a better life for their children. None of these people knew how things would turn out—but they took the chance anyway.

So ask yourself: what dreams are waiting on the other side of your comfort zone? What possibilities could unfold if you let go of fear and leaned into faith?

You’ll never know how far you can go until you step outside the lines drawn by fear and doubt. Life isn’t meant to be played safe—it’s meant to be lived fully. And that starts with a chance. Take it.

Anew adventure is unfolding for Kate Klam as she embarks on the rewarding journey of raising lambs. Known for her dedication, Kate is stepping into the world of FFA with enthusiasm and determination under the leadership of her ag teacher Beth Anne Gann.

Raising lambs is no small task—it requires patience, knowledge, and a deep commitment to animal care. From ensuring proper nutrition and shelter to learning the ins and outs of herd management, Kate is embracing this challenge with open arms. Whether she’s tending to newborn lambs or preparing

them for future competitions, her dedication to excellence is sure to shine through.

Her journey into sheep farming is not just about raising animals—it’s about fostering responsibility, perseverance, and a love for agriculture. With her hardworking spirit and eagerness to learn, there’s no doubt that Kate will excel in this new endeavor.

We congratulate Kate Klam on this exciting new chapter and wish her great success in raising and showing lambs. The future is bright, and we can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes!

Animals are like humans in that they are all different but they have a lot of similar characteristics, needs and tendencies. Just like humans when our animals become dehydrated it effects their entire body in one way or another. Realize though that there is a difference in being thirsty and being dehydrated. We can eat some popcorn or peanuts or a whole host of things that will make us thirsty but not dehydrated or we can just do nothing and want some water because our bodies use moisture to function correctly. The same is true for our animals, they need ample water for their bodies to function as they should. Also, like humans, not all animals, even in a particular species need the same amount of water as all of the others of that specie. Now there are ranges of particular amounts that cover the vast majority of any specie but there are still variances that fall outside that range.

The required amounts of water are also affected by activities, outdoor temperature, internal temperature, feed ration, type, kind and ingredients. For example, high protein or concentrated feeds require more water to digest than high roughage feeds or plain grass or hay.

I think everyone knows the easiest way to adjust show weight is by increasing or reducing water intake as water weighs 8.34lbs/gal. That being said, all animals NEED some water to process intake, look full, look and feel fresh, control body temperature and maintain bodily functions. So, we can't just completely take away all the water and expect our animals to look right on Show Day. Granted, if it's an afternoon or evening show in ideal conditions and you don't feed or water after the morning feeding, your animal could still be just fine but most anything over 10 or 12 hours without feed or water starts to affect the inner workings of any animal.

Show trends change and change fairly often in what Judges are placing emphasis on or looking for in any particular species. As an example, in the late 70's and early 80's show steers were giants, really tall, long legs, huge framed animals, in the 90's and 2000's Judges started picking smaller framed animals until they were almost square it seemed, compact for sure, and at one point they appeared to 48"-54" tall and 30"40" wide. Today they're using bigger framed heavier bodied 1400 lb., 1500 lb., and even some near 1600 lb. steers to win shows. We've seen this trend or similar

trends in all species of our show animals including Poultry, Rabbits, Hogs, Sheep and Cattle. Even Horses have gone through similar changes.

But one thing hasn't changed, hydration. Admittedly, we are using animals much more hydrated now than in many times in years past. One thing important to remember is that hydration can come in small amounts. It's not just volume of water that helps animals hydrate it's what's in it to help them hydrate.

At OXY-GEN we have options to help keep your animals hydrated. We offer two different drench powders, Crusade and Crusade Plus.

Crusade™ Livestock Supplement helps handle the challenges associated with heat and stress with our premium electrolyte blend! An

efficient electrolyte drench for all livestock species, excellent for maintaining proper hydration under stress. Keeps your animal fresh and ready for the ring while using 1/3 less water than other drenches.

Crusade Plus™ our New Revolutionary Product! An efficient electrolyte, prebiotic, and probiotic drench for all livestock species excellent for maintaining proper hydration under stress. Keeps your animal fresh and ready for the ring while using 1/3 less water than other drenches, and our exclusive stain-free formula won’t stain hair or clothing

Additionally, both products can be used as a top dress to get your animals to super-hydrate before you haul them to the show. Just add a Tbsp or two on top of their feed each feeding for a few days before departure.

We The Big Picture of Showing Livestock

Deciding If We Are Going To Show...

As the heat of summer begins to fade and fall settles in across Central Texas, many families are reflecting on the past show season while preparing for what lies ahead. From early mornings at spring majors to long nights at county fairs, the 2025 stock show season has wrapped for most, and now it's time to focus on fall sales, upcoming prospect shows, and the next round of livestock projects.

Across towns big and small, from Fort Worth to Houston, San Antonio to San Angelo, and right back home to county showgrounds and practice pens, Central Texas families have crisscrossed the state with trailers in tow and boots on the ground. For many, it felt like a three-month tour, each stop packed with challenges, learning moments, and memories. Some placings matched expectations, others didn’t. But if there’s one lesson seasoned show families know by heart, it’s this: there’s something to gain from every win and every loss.

In barns, show rings, and feed stores throughout the region, conversations are already shifting. Parents and students are talking about next year's goals—who’s judging the majors in 2026, what’s coming up in the fall sales, which projects look promising, and, of course, how the budget might stretch (or not). It’s a familiar rhythm for those who’ve been through it. For new families just stepping into this world, it may feel overwhelming, filled with questions like: Should we show? What species? What’s the cost? Where do we even start?

And those are fair questions. The livestock show world can feel intimidating at first. The stories—good and bad—are plenty. But from veteran show families across Central Texas, the message remains clear: the rewards far outweigh the risks.

Because this isn’t just about ribbons or buckles. It’s about what happens behind the scenes. The long days, the discipline, the responsibility, the community, and the growth. Whether a student is showing a steer, lamb, goat, pig, or poultry, the

value lies in what they’re learning—not just in agriculture, but in life.

If you ask the average person in a city—or even in some smaller towns—what they know about livestock shows, the answer might be “not much.” That’s part of the challenge. Many people don’t realize the real-world lessons woven into every part of raising and showing animals: budgeting, problem-solving, communication, hard work, and pride in progress. It’s not just an extracurricular—it’s a life skill set.

Livestock shows across Central Texas—and the programs that support them like FFA, 4-H, county extension services,

and junior breed associations—are more than competitions. They are training grounds for the next generation of leaders, workers, and citizens. These kids are learning to care for something beyond themselves. They’re learning to manage time, deal with disappointment, celebrate wins with grace, and keep going when the going gets tough.

And they’re not just doing it for now—they’re doing it for the future. With fewer and fewer Americans living and working on farms, it’s more important than ever that we invest in the students who are choosing to raise livestock, study agriculture, and commit to feeding the world.

These are the young people driving grain trucks, irrigating crops, helping in the milk barn, trimming hooves, stacking hay, managing pastures, and watching the sky for rain. Many of them got their start with a 4-H goat or a county fair heifer. Now, they’re preparing for careers in ag science, veterinary medicine, agribusiness, welding, or environmental sustainability. And many will go on to take roles in rural communities, in city councils, and in classrooms—passing on what they’ve learned.

So, to the families just starting out or thinking about diving into the show world this fall: do it. Talk to your ag

teachers, your county agents, your friends who’ve been through it. Attend a prospect show, visit a sale, ask questions. You don’t have to know everything now—none of us did when we started. Just be open to the process, and keep your eyes on the bigger picture.

Showing livestock isn’t always easy. It’s messy, expensive, time-consuming, and, yes, competitive. But it’s also deeply rewarding. It builds community. It connects generations. It raises kids who know how to work, who care about something bigger than themselves, and who are proud to represent rural America.

And whether they come home with a banner or

When we first sat down with Lauren Jacoby, she greeted us with a smile and the most common question she hears: “Where is Melvin, Texas?” It’s a small dot on the map, nestled in McCulloch County with a population just shy of 200. But for those in the know—especially in the agricultural and show livestock world—Melvin is the proud home of Jacoby Feed & Seed, a thriving, family-owned business with deep roots, bold growth, and a heart for community.

Dating back four generations, the Jacoby legacy is a true testament to what hard work, vision, and family values can build. founded in 1981 by Kelli and Jason Jacoby, Jacoby Feed & Seed was born from necessity and a bit of entrepreneurial curiosity. That spark of ingenuity led to the creation of a small grain elevator and warehouse in the early ‘80s, initially meant for storing the grain they grew or purchased from neighboring farmers.

Jacoby’s has since evolved into a full-scale feed mill and agricultural supply hub, now employing over 75 people and serving customers far beyond the borders of Melvin. From livestock feed to crop services, Jacoby Feed & Seed has expanded its offerings to meet the needs of modern producers, all while staying true to its roots.

But this isn’t just a feed business— it’s a lifestyle, a legacy, and a love letter to rural Texas. The Jacoby family is deeply entrenched in the world of show livestock. They not only sell feed but also raise their own competitive show sheep. Their commitment to youth in agriculture is unmatched, offering incentive and awards programs for kids who use Jacoby feeds and find success in the ring. Supporting the next generation is a core value, and it’s visible in everything they do.

“Watching kids grow through these programs, watching them win using our feed, it’s incredibly rewarding,” Lauren shares. “It’s not just about business—it’s about building community, supporting families, and being part of something bigger.”

That sense of community is woven into the very fabric of Jacoby Feed & Seed. Beyond the show ring, the business is a pillar of support for local and regional events. Whether it’s sponsoring 4-H dinners, NRA banquets, chamber of commerce events, or the Heart of the Heart banquet, the Jacobys are always present, giving back to the people and places that have supported them along the way.

One of the standout events they host each year is the Loving You Fundraiser, a heartfelt initiative that raises money to help youth exhibitors headed to the San Antonio Stock Show. It’s a true community celebration with a purpose—ensuring that every kid has the chance to chase their dreams in the show ring, no matter their financial background. The funds raised help cover travel, entry fees, and other expenses, turning what might be an unreachable goal into an achievable one.

Their support doesn’t stop at agriculture. Jacoby Feed & Seed regularly

contributes to educational initiatives, local schools, and scholarship funds. It’s all part of a broader mission: to create a sustainable and supportive environment where rural families can thrive.

Despite its growth, Jacoby Feed & Seed still feels like a hometown operation. The team is tight knit, the values are old-school in the best way, and the service comes with a smile and a handshake. When you walk through the doors, you’re not just a customer— you’re family.

Lauren Jacoby, who now plays an active role in operations and community outreach, represents the next generation of leadership. With a deep understanding of both the history and the future of the business, she brings a fresh perspective while holding tight to the traditions that made Jacoby Feed & Seed what it is today.

The business’s success story is also a testament to resilience and vision. From a store feed operation to a booming agricultural service company, Jacoby Feed & Seed continues to evolve. Whether it’s adopting new technology in feed production, expanding product lines, or deepening their involvement in youth programs, the Jacobys aren’t done growing yet.

So, where is Melvin, Texas?

It’s a tiny town with a big heart. It’s a place where tradition and innovation shake hands every day. And it is home to Jacoby Feed & Seed—a family business that’s feeding livestock, fueling futures, and giving back every step of the way.

Whether you’re passing through West Texas or searching for a trusted name in feed and agriculture, remember the name Jacoby. Because what they’ve built in Melvin isn’t just a business—it’s a legacy.

The Nolte Brothers: Building Gatesville, Strengthening Community

In Gatesville, family and hard work run deep— and few embody that more than brothers William (“Bill”) and Fahron Nolte. While each has his own thriving business—Bill with Nolte’s Fencing & Welding, and Fahron with Nolte’s Construction—they share a passion for serving not just customers but the entire community.

Bill’s company builds everything from ranch fencing and custom gates to carports and residential projects, serving areas across Central Texas. “We started small, doing repairs, and now it’s grown into a full-time business,” Bill shared. “We’re blessed to work in a community like this, and we want to give back wherever we can.”

Fahron’s construction company, born after his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, specializes in bringing dream homes and projects to life. “I

learned so much from my dad and mentors here in Gatesville,” Fahron said. “Starting my own business felt like a way to keep building on what they taught me.”

The Noltes are deeply involved in local efforts, from helping Trinity Baptist Church with its annual Easter pageant (bringing in animals and setting up pens for hundreds of children and families) to sponsoring and coaching Little League teams. “We grew up seeing our parents and uncles support local teams and events,” Fahron said. “Now it’s our turn to do the same.”

They also volunteer at El Leon Ranch, where veterans and youth experience hunting and outdoor life—completely free of charge. “It’s about creating opportunities for people to experience something special,” Bill added. If you’re looking for someone to take care of your fencing, welding, or construction needs, consider these hometown brothers. They don’t just work here—they’re building Gatesville and investing in the people who call it home.

A TEXAS RULE FOR SURVIVAL

It seems I’ve earned another badge as a Texan, thanks to a lesson this state is determined to teach: how to stay alive on the road. One of the first unwritten rules I picked up here is simple—never trust a traffic light. There’s something about Texas drivers, no matter where you are—small towns, Houston, Dallas—it doesn’t matter. Red lights seem to be viewed more as suggestions than hard stops. That’s why, when the light turns green, most Texans will wait a solid three or four seconds before moving forward, just to make sure no one barrels through the intersection.

When I brought it up, the reaction was immediate. Plenty of agreement, but also a wave of people chiming

in with another bit of wisdom: Rule Number Two.

Rule Number Two? Never trust a blinker.

At first, it seemed like a joke. Texans using turn signals on I-35? Wishful thinking. But that’s not what they meant. This rule refers to the habit of not trusting a driver who’s signaling to turn off the main road you’re about to pull onto. Even if it looks obvious—even if they’re slowing down and the road they’re signaling toward is clearly yours—don’t assume they’re actually going to turn. Around here, the blinker doesn’t always match the driver’s intention. Apparently, some Texans hit the indicator just for fun… or forget it’s on altogether.

To be fair, if folks did start using blinkers consistently while flying down I-35 at 100-plus miles per hour, that would be a nice development. But in the meantime, it’s another rule of the road—don’t trust the indicator light.

In fact, maybe the broader rule is this: don’t trust the Texan behind the wheel. Not the traffic lights, not the blinkers, not even the four-way stops. Unless, of course, they’re in the fast lane on I-35—in which case, your best move is to get out of the way.

You’ve likely heard of student loans and 529 plans to cover tuition costs. But there’s another innovative option worth considering.

Education is a worthwhile investment, one that appreciates over a lifetime. But it’s also a major expense, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost of college has more than doubled in the 21st century. When you factor in books, supplies and daily living expenses, the average total cost for a full-time student to attend a four-year university is $153,080.

When it comes to funding a child’s education without breaking the bank, you’ve likely heard of 529 plans. These valuable education savings tools allow you to invest after-tax dollars in an account that will grow tax-deferred and can be distributed tax-free for qualified expenses.*

But there’s another strategy you might not have considered: a securities based line of credit (SBL).

Most investors know they can borrow against the value of their home should they need fast and significant liquidity. But many don’t know they can also borrow against the value of their investment account through an SBL.

A versatile alternative to traditional financing, an SBL allows you to leverage non-retirement-invested assets to secure a flexible line of credit by pledging your investment portfolio as collateral. You can use this loan to pay for everything from a dream home to a child’s education.**

Since an SBL is backed by your portfolio, you can access cash quickly without disrupting your asset allocation. The repayment process for an SBL is often flexible as well. Just make sure you maintain the required collateral amount in your account.

There are several reasons an SBL could be more suitable than other, more conventional methods of paying for an education, such as student loans:

• An SBL can help you potentially save on borrowing costs and fees compared to traditional student loans.

• Applying for an SBL is often easier than applying for a student loan. And once approved, you can access funds quickly through check, wire or online.

• An SBL has a more flexible repayment structure than most student loans, including the option to pay only the interest.

• You can set up an SBL in your child’s name.

Paying for a child’s college education is both a life-changing gift and a significant investment. That’s why it’s essential to examine your options and determine which best aligns with your needs and goals.

And remember, you can always consult your advisor for guidance throughout this process. The goal is to invest in your child’s future while preserving yours.

**A securities based line of credit (SBLC) may not be suitable for all clients. The proceeds from an SBLC cannot be (a) used to purchase or carry securities; (b) deposited into a Raymond James investment or trust account; (c) used to purchase any product issued or brokered through an affiliate of Raymond James, including insurance; or (d) otherwise used for the benefit of, or transferred to, an affiliate of Raymond James. Raymond James Bank does not accept RJF stock or any securities issued by affiliates of Raymond James Financial as pledged securities toward an SBLC. Borrowing on securities based lending products and using securities as collateral may involve a high degree of risk including unintended tax consequences and the possible need to sell your holdings, which may lead to a significant impact on long-term investment goals. Market conditions can magnify any potential for loss. If the market turns against the client, he or she may be required to quickly deposit additional securities and/or cash in the account(s) or pay down the loan to avoid liquidation. The securities in the Pledged Account(s) may be sold to meet the Collateral Call, and the firm can sell the client’s securities without contacting them. A client is not entitled to choose which securities or other assets in his or her account are liquidated or sold to meet a Collateral Call. The firm can increase its maintenance requirements at any time and is not required to provide a client advance written notice. A client is not entitled to an extension of time on a Collateral Call. Increased interest rates could also affect SOFR rates (or any successor rate thereto) that apply to your SBLC causing the cost of the credit line to increase significantly. The interest rates charged are determined by the market value of pledged assets and the net value of the client’s non-pledged Capital Access account. Comanche Rose 2024

Step Back in Time at

In the heart of downtown Comanche, Texas, 1895 stands as a speakeasy-style music venue where history, hospitality, and honky tonk meet. The vision behind it? Two couples—friends and business partners—who brought together a shared love of music, good drinks, and small-town charm.

David and Kerry Kersh aren’t strangers to the stage. Both found success as country music stars in the 1990s—David Kersh known for hits like “Goodnight Sweetheart” and “Another You,” and Kerry Harvick as a powerhouse vocalist and television personality. Their passion for live music has always been at the center of who they are.

Brad and Rachel Thompson moved to Comanche in 2021 with their two kids, trading city life for a tight-knit community they’ve grown to love. With a background in business and marketing, they teamed up with the Kershes to bring something special to the square.

Together, they created 1895—a place where the lights are low, the music is top

notch, and the cocktails are crafted with care. Whether you're catching an acoustic set or sipping something bold at the bar, it feels like a step back in time to when nights were a little slower, and stories were told through song.

Next door, you'll find The Greene Room— a beautifully restored event space designed to host private parties, intimate concerts, and community gatherings. With its exposed brick walls, vintage charm, and versatile layout, it’s quickly becoming one of Comanche’s favorite venues for celebrations of all kinds.

And soon, the experience will come full circle with the addition of a thoughtfully designed upstairs lodging space—perfect for weekend getaways, bridal parties, or anyone looking to soak in the charm of the square a little longer.

Everyone is welcome at 1895. The drinks are fantastic. The music is real. And the people? Well, they’re what make this place feel like home.

Country singer and songwriter Garrett Bradford grew up immersed in “rural ranching cowboy culture” in Weatherford, Texas. He wouldn’t trade a thing about his country upbringing. Bradford was actively engaged in ranching, rodeos, and tending horses. His passion for music was kindled while listening to his Uncle Jim play guitar and his later participation in his local church choir at First Baptist Church, thanks to his mother’s insistence. Although he wasn't keen on joining the choir, his mother, May Bradford's, non-negotiable determination paid off as a new country singing star was born.

The Choir Director, Ms. Simmons, believed in Bradford's natural talent and gave him ample opportunities to sing solos

in the choir. Over time, and with a few nudges, Bradford realized that he loved to sing. As his passion for music increased, he began walking half a mile down the road to learn guitar from his Uncle Jim. Each week, Uncle Jim taught Bradford a few songs, lending him his guitar. A year later, around age 11, Bradford’s dad, Milt Bradford, decided to gift him a Bic Wood Guitar from the local pawn shop.

At the age of 12, Bradford made friends with a new boy that moved into town. Unknown to Bradford at that time, the new boy’s father, Dan Roberts, would become one of Bradford’s most significant influences. Roberts was a solo artist and songwriter who produced many Billboard chart-topping songs for singers like Garth Brooks. Roberts took Bradford

Excitement is in the air across Gatesville, Texas, as the First Methodist Church prepares to host its much-anticipated Annual Harvest Festival. Scheduled for October 18th, the festival remains a highlight of the community calendar, renowned for its blend of cherished traditions, lively entertainment, and genuine hospitality.

Celebration of Faith, Fellowship, and Tradition

The origins of the modern Harvest Festival began in 1922 when a Baptist preacher in Georgia challenged farmers to donate the proceeds of one acre of cotton to the church. The practice gained notoriety and spread internationally after reports that the dedicated acres were miraculously spared from the boll weevil infestation of 1923. The “Lord’s Acre Plan” grew to include canned goods, homemade crafts, baked items, or other talents that could be sold to benefit the Church. The Gatesville Messenger and Star Forum mentions the Jonesboro Methodist Church hosting a Harvest Festival as early as 1958. Other area churches soon followed with festivals entitled “Lord’s Acre,” “Harvest Festival” or a combination of the two names.

The Harvest Festival at First Methodist Church in Gatesville was first advertised in 1979, offering a barbecue supper for $5 per adult and $2.50 per child. While many local festivals have ended, the church has upheld this tradition for over 40 years. This year, the festival will once again unite the community, with Pastor Stephen Schmidt highlighting its focus on gratitude and togetherness. Everyone is invited to participate in the ongoing celebration.

Food, Fun & Family

Festivities run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enjoy free games and activities for all ages, such as the pumpkin patch, painting, cookie walk, carnival games, obstacle course, bounce

house, and petting zoo. New this year: corn hole tournament, jail & bail, and mechanical bull ride. Enjoy classic Texas fare from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring BBQ smoked chicken and sausage, sides, and dessert. Meals are $15 for adults and $7.50 for children under 10. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the Church office or a Harvest Festival Committee member.

Entertainment and Local Artisans

Festivalgoers can experience performances spanning multiple musical genres by local artists, including Colin Dexter, the Man of Many Voices, David Langehennig, and Bailey Shae Dickie. The event will also feature vendor booths hosted by local artisans offering apparel, crafts, and seasonal décor. The Harvest Festival "Country Store" will also be open, selling homemade baked goods such as canned items, pies, cakes, and candy – just in time for the holiday season.

Raffles, Auctions, and Giving Back

This year’s festival will include fundraising opportunities such as a silent auction and a basket raffle, with prizes ranging from hotel and vacation packages, donations from local artisans, gift certificates from area businesses, holiday crafts and much more. Proceeds will support Church outreach programs, helping to provide essential aid to families in need throughout Gatesville and the surrounding communities.

Welcoming All to Celebrate

With delicious food, lively entertainment, and a spirit of gratitude, this year’s Harvest Festival promises to be a memorable celebration for all. Ashley’s Journey

Still Waters & Sacred Pauses

Psalm 23 has always been familiar to me, but lately, one small word has stood out in a big way: He makes me lie down in green pastures. That word—makes—carries weight. Not forcefulness, but intentionality. A loving Shepherd who knows exactly when we need to stop, be still, and just be with Him.

Right now, I’m sitting by the beach. The waves crash rhythmically, and the breeze seems to whisper truth. I’m surrounded by beauty, but what’s happening inside me is what really matters. This stillness isn’t just physical, it’s sacred. It’s a pause that’s making room for clarity and presence, something my soul didn’t even know how much it needed.

Some of my friends rest differently—they love to explore, walk, and stay busy even on vacation. And that’s beautiful in its own way. But this? This moment of being made to lie down, to slow down, to sit beside the still waters? It’s holy.

I remember a pastor once shared how sometimes the Shepherd makes us lie down because we wouldn’t stop otherwise. That’s never left me. And here I am, realizing how deeply that applies to this season.

In the stillness, thoughts rise to the surface—real ones. Not the kind that get drowned out by the constant noise of life, but the kind that matter. Reflections. Convictions. Longings.

And most of all, the cry of my heart is this: I want others to know Jesus the way I do. Not just know about Him, but know Him. As a Friend. As Peace. As the One who brings calm to the chaos. The One who gently says, “You’re mine,” even when life feels loud and messy and broken. Knowing Jesus hasn’t made everything easy. But it’s given everything meaning. It’s brought peace in the middle of confusion. It’s awakened my desire to walk with Him, not just when life is quiet, but through the crazy and the go-go-go that often defines our days.

How is it even possible that in this vast, massive universe, the God who made the stars calls me His daughter? And if He does that for me, I know He wants to do it for you, too.

This isn’t the end of my story—it’s a sacred pause. A moment of reflection. And a moment to extend the invitation that’s been extended to me.

If you’ve never truly known Him—if you’re still searching for peace, for clarity, for purpose—it’s not too late. He’s not far off. He’s closer than you think.

Romans 10:9–10 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

This isn’t about religion. It’s about relationship. It’s about saying, “Jesus, I need you. I want you. Forgive me. Lead me.” It’s simple. Open. Life-changing. And it’s yours for the taking.

Your story won’t look like mine. It’ll be your own walk, your own road, your own sacred pause. But the same Savior is waiting. And He’s calling you, too.

So, as I sit here—by still waters, in this moment of peace—I’m holding onto the hope that many will find Him in their own stillness.

The Shepherd is near.

Tips for Portion Control and Healthy Eating

The Plate Method

Make sure half of your plate is filled with vegetables, one-quarter with lean protein, and the last quarter with whole grains. This simple method helps maintain a balanced diet.

Smaller Plates

Using a smaller plate can make your portions appear larger, which may help with portion control. Visually, it can help trick your brain into thinking you’re eating more than you actually are.

Measure Portions

If you’re struggling with portion sizes, using measuring cups can help you get a better sense of the right amount of food to eat. This can prevent overeating, especially when it comes to calorie-dense foods.

Be Mindful of Leftovers

It’s easy to finish off someone else’s leftovers or keep snacking on food that’s still out. Try to avoid this to keep your calorie intake in check.

The 20-Minute Rule

Wait at least 20 minutes before going for seconds. It takes time for your brain to register fullness, so this small delay can prevent overeating.
