When I tried to imagine Broomfield Days without Paul on the stage, I got a little sad. What would it be like? Who could possibly fill his shoes? Well about a month ago I got a phone call from another dear friend of mine. Mr. John Long. He was calling to give me the scoop that he had been selected by a City committee to serve as the new MC for the parade - with the endorsement of his predecessor. John wanted to know what I thought. I could hardly keep from jumping up and down! Many of you know John. His family is one of Broomfield’s founding families having lived here for decades. John has had a long career teaching in the Broomfield High School math department and has years of experience working within and supporting various youth and adult sports programs around town. And he is a great guy. And he is funny. And he is going to be awesome. John and my husband Pat were good buddies in high school and we all grew up together. Like us, his heart beats for this town.

Tina EditorEichner,&Publisher

John is excited and honored to take the role. He said, “I can’t be Paul … no one can … and I know there are many that will miss his iconic voice as they come down Midway Blvd. I simply hope to make him proud of the work I do as the MC. As with Paul, I have a great love for this town and my goal is to help to create a fun and festive atmosphere that Broomfield Days is known for. No one wants to follow a legend, but I guess someone has to do it. I am just honored that Paul and the good folks in charge of the parade asked me to take over the role.”

Paul said, “I am really happy John has agreed to be the new MC for Broomfield Days and take it forward. I know he’ll do a great job and he is a great choice – having grown up here and attended Broomfield High School. John was 13 when I first started MCing Broomfield Days!”

For all of you long timers, I can’t wait to see you on Sept. 17. For those newer to the community, be sure to check it out - it is a Saturday well spent and will bring full understanding of why your chosen home is so special. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you on Midway Blvd …

Broomfield Days is coming! Yes. This fact requires an exclamation point. For those with history here - you know. Broomfield Days is the most fantastic day of the year. Better than Christmas, better than the Fourth of July, better than your birthday. It is the supreme celebration of our community and an all out reunion for those who have made roots here. I must admit, after attending Broomfield Days my entire life, this year I was having some trepidation about Broomfield Days. Because after forty years as the Master of Ceremonies of the Broomfield Days Parade, last year my dear friend Mr. Paul Derda decided to retire from the role. 2021 was a beautiful celebration of Paul and all that he has given to this community through a lifetime of public service in Broomfield Recreation and as an active supporter of dozens of organizations. Paul’s announcing of the Broomfield Days Parade was a hallmark of the annual event.

Lisa Payne writes about home, health, and family. You can reach her at lisa@paynefam6.com.

I write my articles a month before publication. So I am writing this three days after the tragic car accident that took the life of a Broomfield High School student and injured several others.

Right after a loss, don’t ask how you can help because that puts the burden on them. Just help. Drop off groceries, help make calls or send emails, take their kids for the day, do yard work, clean their house, start a meal train. Sit with them when they need you and give them space when they don’t. And don’t forget the siblings. Gifts, outings, notes, and hugs all go a long way with their grief. After a funeral, the shock wears off and an even deeper grieving may begin. It is very lonely when the visitors stop coming and the support tapers off. This is when they need you the most. Set reminders on your phone to call them or check in daily or a few times a week. Invite them to do things like walk and be in nature. Go in with some friends and hire a masseuse to go to their home. Have a mellow game night that might encourage laughter. Just show up and sit in silence. Whatever that person needs. But most importantly, please talk about the person they lost and use their name. Tell stories about that person. Ask everyone you know to write down their favorite memories and put it all together in a book for them. Give them pictures you have. Send a text just because. And to all the close friends of the BHS student we lost, please visit his family often. Not only did they lose their child but they lost having all of his friends around. Invite them to your grad parties. Send notes on the deceased person’s birthday. Keep in touch and visit them. This will be one of the greatest gifts you can offer.

BUSY FAMILIES

It’s hard to know the best way to show support after a tragedy like this, or to anyone suffering for that matter. Is it best to bring food? Give a hug? Walk their dog? Mow their lawn? Yes. Just yes. Everything helps. Any little thing you can think of speaks volumes during a time where we are all at a loss for words. I wanted to share some ideas to show your love and care. It’s easy to do initially when everyone is in shock and grieving. But they will need the most support in the very lonely months that follow. Before I dig into how to help, I want to remind people of what NOT to say based on feedback from bereaved people. And we all make these mistakes so it’s more of a gentle reminder. Try to avoid saying things like “How are you?,” “You will feel better with time,” “He/she is in a better place,” “He/she lived a long life,” “God is in charge,” “Time heals,” or “You need to be strong for your family.”

By Lisa Payne

Things that ARE helpful to say include “I’m so sorry for your loss,” “I wish I had the right words, know I’m here for you,” or “I can’t imagine how you feel.” It’s okay to not know what to say. Just being present and listening or sitting with them in silence is supportive.

Hearts across our community are torn apart and deeply grieving. You can feel it in the air. It seems everyone knows someone involved. That’s because this is Broomfield and we are one big family.

The annual Broomfield Community Foundation Heart of Broomfield Award Ceremony is 6:30 p.m.

the Heart of Broomfield Means to Them

At a lunch recently with some friends, I brought up in our conversation the Broomfield Community Foundation’s upcoming Heart of Broomfield award ceremony happening later this month. Because each of the three women that I was lunching with are lifelong Broomfield residents, I was curious to know what they thought of the longstanding annual event, now in its 22nd year recognizing community members who make meaningful contributions.

Former city council member Liz Law-Evans agrees. “So, to me the Heart of Broomfield is getting in touch with what a wonderful community this truly is and how growing up here, we have friendships that have cultivated relationships between some really great people.”

“The Heart of Broomfield is the embodiment of people who have the forethought to see what the gaps are in our community and then begin to fill those gaps before there is pain experienced by those less fortunate, who may fall through the cracks otherwise,” explained Emily Crouse, a community activist, banker, and law school student.

Attendees can look forward to a delicious lunch, an opportunity to mingle, and a program sharing FISH’s background and mission, stories of strength and resilience from program participants, and ways to make a difference for families in need. This event is free to attend, and you can sign up today at the event website: fish. bebidas.me. Event sponsors for Embracing Hope not only make the luncheon possible, but also support program continuity. Sponsors will be recognized online and at the event. To sign up for a sponsorship, visit the event website. The goal for Embracing Hope is to raise $125,000 to feed families and fuel hope. You can make a donation at the event, or in advance, on the event website or by texting “FISH” to 56651. Donations from this event support operations and programming throughout the year. The funds raised through Embracing Hope allow FISH to provide healthy food options in the FISH marketplace each week, assist families through emergencies like job loss or health problems, and keep families housed. When you give to FISH, 95 cents of every dollar goes directly to benefit lowincomeMaggieresidents.also said, “Having our largest fundraiser in the fall helps us ensure we have the necessary funds to meet the need through the holiday season, which is always our busiest time of the year. It is so important that FISH is able to be not only a safety net but also a supportive community during what can be both the most joyful and the most difficult time of the year for families in need.” Last November, FISH helped 3,589 people by providing 141,000 pounds of food, including special items for their holiday meals and more than 600 turkeys. Community support during the holiday season is crucial to ensuring they have enough for all participants to enjoy special holiday meals with their families in warm, safe Anotherhomes.great way to support FISH and make a larger impact over the course of the year is to join the FISH Fan Club by setting up a recurring donation. Monthly giving makes a huge difference by providing consistent funds to maintain operations and programming.

Maggie Sava is the Communications and Media Manager at FISH. She said, “The name ‘Embracing Hope’ is more evocative and representative of our work as a family resource center. We are helping families on their path to self-sufficiency, including not only our food assistance but also our emergency financial assistance and oneon-one mentoring to connect participants with community resources.”

The community favorite event that takes place each September is 100 percent back to normal this year, with registrations for the parade, vendor booths, and other events reaching 2019 levels, said Kay Gazaway, community events coordinator for the City and County of Broomfield. The event kicks off Friday, September 16, with the Senior Resources of Broomfield Golf Tournament in the afternoon and Lions Club Bingo at the Girl Scout Shelter at 7:00 p.m. and continues Saturday with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Lions Club, a clown contest on the main stage, the Mayor’s Cup 5K and Fun Run, a car show, the parade and many other activities. Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy entertainment on the demonstration and performance stages, concerts on the main stage, carnival games, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, and concessions. Also this year, the Colorado Department of Public Health will have its vaccine bus at Broomfield Days for free COVID vaccines beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

Even pets have a place at Broomfield Days with BowWow Broomfield, an area set up just for dogs. The day will be full of furry fun with pet-related vendors and the always-anticipated DockDogs contests. DockDogs is a sport in which dogs compete in distance or height while jumping from a 40-foot dock into water. There are three disciplines: Big Air (dogs are judged based on the distance jumped), Extreme Vertical (the dog that jumps the highest takes the prize) and Speed Retrieve (a doggy drag race where the fastest rules the pool).

Because there is no entry gate or ticket required, attendance numbers are always a guesstimate, but planners estimate approximately 20,000 community members attend Broomfield Days each year, said Gazaway.

Behind the Scenes

The department is responsible for laying out and painting vendor booth spaces, assisting vendors as they set up, helping set up the Dock Dogs pool, setting up trash and recycling stations, and transporting golf carts, picnic tables, and Altogether, bleachers.theparks department puts in about 550 hours of prep work, 396 hours of work during the event, and 189 hours cleaning up, said Kevin Ewerks, Parks Services supervisor for the City and County of Broomfield.

The Parks Department also plays a major role in preparing for and running the event. Beginning the Monday before Broomfield Days, the department begins sprucing up the park, lifting tree limbs that might interfere with vendor vehicles, mowing and trimming the grass, and weeding and deadheading flowerbeds. Also during the week leading up to the Broomfield Days, the department cleans out the ditch for the Duck Race, including removing major debris, brooming the ditch to Midway Avenue, and pressure washing and cleaning the rocks and concrete drain pan.

“Parks has a great staff and it runs pretty darn smooth,” said Ewerks. “It’s our biggest event of the year and that’s just our part. Recreation, streets, and many other departments put in a lot of hours to make this work.”

In addition to city employees, Broomfield Days relies on approximately 150 volunteers. Community members can sign up to volunteer at Broomfield’s VolunteerHub website.

What to Know Before

• A large section of ADA parking is reserved at the Garden Center for guests with an ADA placard or license plate.

Planning for Broomfield Days begins at the end of each year for the following year’s Broomfield Days, said Gazaway. By January, the entertainment and infrastructure are secured, and organizers begin creating registration pages and updating the event website. Starting April 1, vendors begin to register for one of 300 booth spaces.

“Broomfield Days is a much-loved, longstanding tradition,” said Gazaway. “The festival creates wonderful memories and residents often share with me how they remember coming to the Broomfield Days when they were kids and now their children are in the parade or performing on the Demo Stage. There really is something for everyone, and all ages enjoy the day filled with a parade, carnival rides, athletic dogs, live music, great food, cold beer, and lots of vendor booths to explore.”•Broomfield Days is free to attend. Food and beer vendors usually take credit cards but cash is needed to buy ride tickets.

Willey

A limited number of poster prints will be available for sale at Broomfield Days this year.

The annual contest is organized through the Broomfield Council on Arts and Humanities (BCAH). The contest was originated by Broomfield residents Joe and Carol Dankey in 1988 and they ran it for 20 years before passing the project to BCAH.

The City and County of Broomfield has announced that the votes are in and the 2022 Broomfield Days Parade Grand Marshall is Jay Willey! As reported on the City’s Facebook page, Jay Willey has lived in the Broomfield community for more than 50 years. As a Personal Trainer with the City and County of Broomfield, Jay has trained about every demographic in the Broomfield community to lead healthy, productive, and more enjoyable lives. His influence and knowledge has touched thousands of lives over the years. Jay has trained and welcomed members of all communities in the spirit of inclusivity, kindness, and respect.

Andrea Wallace grew up on one side of Nissen Reservoir and now lives on the other side in adulthood. The waterway provides just one of dozens of impeccable views in Broomfield and is part of what makes our City so beautiful. Her painting illustrating the lake just before sunset has been selected as this year’s commemorative Broomfield Days poster.

“I feel so lucky to walk out my door and take just a few steps to be able to see the most amazing, most colorful sunsets reflected on the water of Nissen Lake,” said Andrea. “Painting is a relaxing, creative outlet for me, and I am honored to have my interpretation of Broomfield’s beauty selected for this year’s poster.”

Congratulations to Natasha on winning the 2022 Broomfield Days Design contest. Natasha created the logo as a dedication to Shep, Broomfield’s legendary turnpike dog. For fourteen years, in the early years of Broomfield, Shep lived at the tollbooth of the BoulderDenver the Broomfield Depot Museum, though many loved the pup who appeared in 1950, where he came from remains a mystery. One story is that workers found the black and white dog while constructing the Boulder-Denver Turnpike tollbooths and befriended him. Once U.S. 36 opened, tollbooth operators adopted Shep and he settled into a life of greeting cars and keeping tollmen company. Shep quickly became the most popular attraction on the new highway and the highlight of many drives. Families, salesmen, and daily commuters would bring him food and treats. He became an unofficial mascot for Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) — and a painted portrait of Shep still hangs in their offices.

“These events are essential to fund our programs and help our Broomfield seniors with their individual and ever-changing needs,” said Teryl Fabry, executive director of Senior Resources of Broomfield. “As a community it is important for us to come together to support those in our community such as seniors who deserve to have their basic needs met and to be appreciated and valued.”

SRB also provides nonperishable food items for Meals on Wheels clients in the event of a blizzard (between 170 and 180 bags each year); helps fill funding gaps for dental and medical procedures, hearing aids, vision, wheelchair ramps, and prescriptions; provides funding for professional caregivers to provide caregiver respite; helps buy equipment for the loan closet, which provides items like wheelchairs, shower chairs, and walkers; and provides funding for driver hours for Broomfield’s Easy Ride transportation service.

The car show is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 17, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the grass in South Midway Park. All years, makes, and models of vehicles will be included and all owners are invited to participate, so attendees can expect an interesting variety of vehicles on display.

Established in 1982, SRB is a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) organization addressing the needs of Broomfield’s older adults. SRB assists Broomfield’s senior citizens in a variety of ways, including supporting Meals on Wheels, paying for meal fees at the Lakeshore Cafe at the Broomfield Community Center, paying for five free meals through the Project Homecoming hospital release and recovery program, funding the Healthy Hearts lunch once a month and providing lunch and a goodie bag for seniors celebrating their birthday at Lakeshore Cafe.

All proceeds from the events benefit Meals on Wheels and other SRB programs.

Two favorite annual events return as part of Broomfield Days this month – the Broomfield Days Car Show and the Broomfield Days Golf Tournament. Both events are presented by Senior Resources Broomfield and are important events for helping the organization support needs for seniors in the community.

The SRB Broomfield Days Golf Tournament has been going on for more than a decade and The Broomfield Days Car Show has been going on for more than two decades. The two events provide funding to support programs that help meet the needs of Broomfield’s seniors.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | September 202228

SRB also organizes an annual adopt-a senior for Christmas program that matches seniors with local residents who purchase gifts from their list, and the Pick Me Up program that reaches out to the community to gather items seniors indicate they need during once-per-month care calls.

Golf Tournament, Car Show Return to Broomfield Days

T he golf tournament will take place Friday, September 16, at Eagle Trace Golf Club. Foursomes and individual playing spots are available as well as corporate, business, and family sponsorships. Organizers also are accepting donated items for giveaways.

Much work goes into putting on the two events, which are SRB’s only major fundraisers of the year. Months of preparation include producing marketing materials, monthly fundraiser meetings with the SRB board, securing sponsorships from local businesses and families, sending email blasts to past participants, and soliciting donations for giveaways. Photos are taken at the events and shared on social media, while thank you notes are mailed to each participant after the events.

Check in with your student’s emotional wellbeing. Even before the pandemic, youth in Colorado were struggling with mental health according to the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey. Talking about and normalizing mental health can help students cope and build resilience. Not sure where to start? Talk less and listen more, recognize anxiety is normal, give your student a safe space to talk about how they’re feeling, be encouraging and support self-care.

Talk to your child about COVID-19 at school. Depending on your child’s health status or your personal risk level, you may take more precautions going back to school. Having an open and honest conversation with your child about precautions you would like them to take at school and why can help them adjust to the new environment.

By The City of Broomfield

BROOMFIELD GETS Back to School

Here’s to making the 2022–2023 school year the happiest and healthiest yet! Information on mental health resources, free or low-cost vaccinations, tobacco prevention, and COVID-19 can be found at BroomfieldHealth.org.

Check out mental health resources in the area. Did you know your Colorado student can get free counseling sessions? The I Matter program can connect youth with a therapist for up to six free virtual counseling sessions (some in-person appointments available, too). Learn more at imattercolorado.org. Broomfield has a comprehensive mental and behavioral health resource list that includes a map of service providers including crisis services, eating disorder support, population-specific resources and more. These can be found at Broomfield.org/MHResources.

Talk to your child about vaping. While school is a great place to learn and grow, kids may be peer pressured or exposed to unhealthy behaviors. You can play a big role in preventing your student from vaping. The American Lung Association recommends having an open, calm, and distraction-free discussion with your student about vaping.

Schedule an annual check-up. According to the CDC, many children missed check-ups in the last two years. At annual check-ups, your health care provider can help track your student’s growth and developmental milestones and provides a space to talk about any concerns or questions you may have about your child’s health. Talk to your child’s health care provider about routine vaccinations. Similar to missed check-ups, children across the country are behind on their recommended vaccines. Routine vaccinations can help prevent diseases like measles, whooping cough, chickenpox, and COVID-19 to keep them healthy and in school. Free and low cost routine vaccinations can be found at Broomfield.org/Vaccines.

The last few weeks have been full of back-to-school preparation!

Pencils, backpacks, teacher meetings, orientations — all of the things that signal a yearly fresh start for kids and caregivers alike. This time of year is also a great time to check in on your student’s physical and emotional wellbeing. From routine vaccines to mental health support, you can use this back-to-school checklist to set students up for success for another great year!

A nice, short hike climbing about 560 feet in 1.2 miles is the Viewpoint Trail at Eben G. Fine Park. Named for an early Boulder pharmacist and avid hiker, the area along the Boulder Creek Path is a pleasant, shady little commons – a good location for picnicking and lounging. Access the Viewpoint Trail to the south across the street from the Eben G. Fine parking lot. The footpath winds and climbs southward, with numerous switchbacks and ends at Panorama Point. Another option from the park is north across Boulder Creek to The Peoples’ Crossing (formally Settlers Park). If you prefer to explore those trails beyond, look for the tunnel to the north at the end of the park to link to the Red Rocks Trail and The Peoples’ Crossing. AUTUMN. INDIAN SUMMER.

The best time to plant spring-blooming bulbs is typically late September to mid-October so they have time to establish roots before the soil freezes. However, planting too early could encourage plants to begin growing shoots this season and not survive the winter. A rule of thumb, said Schweig, is to plant bulbs at a depth three to four times the length of the bulb. Fall can also be a good time to plant native wildflowers from seed. Many require a period of cool temperature for the seed to break dormancy in the spring, making fall and winter the best time to plant.

By Kristen Beckman

As temperatures begin to drop, it may seem like it’s time for a break in gardening activities. But several things you do during the fall and winter can set your garden up for beauty in the spring.

“I think the best gift you can give yourself for next season is planting spring-blooming bulbs and corms,” said Sarah Schweig, county extension director and horticulture agent with Broomfield’s CSU Extension. “Some of the earliest bloomers are crocus, snowdrops, squill, and tulips, which will give you some color and cheer in the garden when you most need it. There are many other options like fritillaria, daffodil, and hyacinth, which you can mix with extra early bloomers for a full spring of color.”

FALL’S CHILLY WEATHER SIGNALS NEW GARDEN BEGINNINGS

An often overlooked but beneficial Colorado gardening practice is fall and winter watering of trees, shrubs, and lawns, said Schweig.

“Generally, you want to bring in any plants that are not hardy enough to survive our winters and are worth the trouble to save, rather than replace next season,” said Schweig. “There are lots of summer-blooming bulbs, corms, and roots that fit into this category, like cannas and dahlias. They’re not winter-hardy but will get bigger and multiply over time.”

Schweig also said tender herbs like cilantro, basil, and dill need to overwinter indoors, and rosemary can live for years if taken inside during the winter. Thyme and oregano both can survive Colorado winters in the ground, but also do well in containers and can be overwintered indoors if desired.

While all deciduous plants will go dormant in the winter, fall is often a second-best option for planting trees and perennials in Colorado, after spring, said Schweig. Whether evergreen or deciduous, fall planting should allow enough time for the plant to establish – usually 4-6 weeks – before a freeze.

Bring Your Garden Inside

Late winter before buds set is an ideal time to prune many trees and shrubs, followed by starting seeds indoors in early spring.

Facebook

“This is crucial for newly planted trees and shrubs but can benefit most plants and lawns during prolonged dry periods,” she said. “Water when temperatures are above 40ºF, with no snow cover, early to mid-day so water has a chance to soak in before the chance of freezing at night.”

If you want to overwinter any plants indoors, there are a few steps you can take to increase your chances of success.

As the growing season comes to an end, there are important activities to check off the list like winterizing irrigation systems and garden clean-up, said Schweig. Fall is also a great time to clean and sharpen tools before putting them away for the season, harvesting seeds from favorite plants, mulching plant beds to provide protection over colder months, and amending soil. Soil test kits are available outside the extension’s office on the first floor of the Broomfield Library. Each kit has detailed instructions and is free to pick up. The standard test, which is all most gardeners need, is $35 and can be paid for when results are ready.

After a couple of frosts, carefully dig the plants, remove soil from around the roots, clip the foliage to a couple of inches, and store in a cool but frost-free place for the winter, said Schweig. Most are ideally stored around 40ºF, and an attached, unheated garage usually fits the bill.

Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Another option that is always good is chicken noodle soup and warm bread. Talk about comforting. Some people prefer to give food prepared by a restaurant. Fine! For breakfast think Einstein bagels and cream cheese or breakfast burritos. For lunch Panera has wonderful soups, salads, and bread. For dinner maybe some BBQ and buns or pans of baked mac and cheese from Chick-fil-a. Make sure to include a handwritten note of how to warm or freeze the food, and perhaps include some drinks and maybe a dessert. Imagine what you would want and go from there. On average, Avista’s NICU cares for 8 to 9 babies at a time and on occasion can care for up to 15 infants. The team often goes above and beyond to ensure that every family in their care leaves with a specially crafted gift.

Learn more about Avista Adventist Hospital, including our New Life Center, by visiting www.avistahospital.org.

For nearly 15 years, the team has been sharing the gift of beautifully crafted cards, signs and milestone messages with families. A core group of Avista NICU caregivers on the night shift began using their own crafting materials and free time to create holiday signs, name signs, cards and milestone messages that featured the tiny hand and footprints of newborns.

“We ask the families what the color or theme of their nursery at home is so we can design a sign that will match, and they can take it home,” said nurse Michele Gammel.

We may underestimate the positive effect a kind word, a smile or a simple gift can have on the lives of those around us.

A group of Avista Adventist Hospital caregivers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) know even small gestures can have a big impact. These caregivers provide critical support to babies born prematurely or who are ill after birth.

Though the crafting of these mementos can take some time, our caregivers are happy to do it.

Join us in recognizing all the caregivers on Avista’s NICU unit for supporting the whole health of our tiniest patients and their families.

“We heard from a mother who wasn’t sure how her Mother’s Day would go with her baby in the NICU. She came in and saw the Mother’s Day card we made for her, and she told us it made her day so much better,” added Kris Caquelin, RN Clinical Coordinator.

“It is very rewarding,” Kris said. “We take care of these families for long periods of time, and it feels good to give the parents something to smile and feel positive about while they are here.”
