Presenting the 2022 Heart of Broomfield!

Community Members Discuss What the Heart of Broomfield Means to Them

By Bette Erickson

At a lunch recently with some friends, I brought up in our conversation the Broomfield Community Foundation’s upcoming Heart of Broomfield award ceremony happening later this month. Because each of the three women that I was lunching with are lifelong Broomfield residents, I was curious to know what they thought of the longstanding annual event, now in its 22nd year recognizing community members who make meaningful contributions.

“The Heart of Broomfield is the embodiment of people who have the forethought to see what the gaps are in our community and then begin to fill those gaps before there is pain experienced by those less fortunate, who may fall through the cracks otherwise,” explained Emily Crouse, a community activist, banker, and law school student.

Former city council member Liz Law-Evans agrees. “So, to me the Heart of Broomfield is getting in touch with what a wonderful community this truly is and how growing up here, we have friendships that have cultivated relationships between some really great people.”

She adds, “The Heart of Broomfield is all about making sure that we understand that those relationships have to be preserved and strengthened no matter what.”

The 2022 Heart of Broomfield awards go to the following people:

Heidi Henkel – Angel Award Recognizing an individual who has shown extreme passion and dedication for a Broomfield non-profit organization or charitable program.

Veronica Martine – Education Award

Recognizing an educator - teacher, principal, counselor, volunteer or activist.

David & Sarah Little – Senior Award

Recognizing an outstanding community member, age 65 or older.

Broomfield Youth for Youth – Youth Award

Recognizing either an outstanding community member (age 18 or younger), or group of young community members.

Jennifer Ramirez – Healthcare Hero

Recognizing an outstanding individual in the healthcare industry (serving in any role within a hospital, clinic, or public health) who has exemplified commitment, responsibility, duty, and honor during an incredibly tumultuous time.

Lori Lane – Heart & Soul Award

Recognizing an individual who consistently gives of themselves to their neighbors, local groups, and even strangers, and whose actions are the epitome of a community with heart.

Farmers Market at Holy Comforter – Heart of Gold Organizational Award

Recognizing a group of volunteers, business, department, or collaborative team whose combined efforts have significantly strengthened our community.

Sharon Tessier – Walter P. Spader Lifetime Award

A lifetime achievement award for a proven community leader whose energy, passion, sense of humor, and wisdom have made Broomfield a better place.

Perhaps my friend, former council member Kim Groom, said it best. “The Heart of Broomfield to me is more community spirit than individual spirit – that is, we help all those in need.”

Truly, the Heart of Broomfield award ceremonies celebrate the enthusiasm and generosity of community contributors who make Broomfield a better place for us all. Contact the Broomfield Community Foundation at 303- 469-7208 or visit https://www.broomfieldfoundation.org/ for more information.
