Broomfield's summertime beauty is on full display and drawing many of us outdoors, and Broomfield's parks and trails are a great place to augment your health and wellness journey, which is our focus topic this month.
I was first introduced to Bal Swan Children's Center during my college years as an Early Childhood Education student. While observing the school, I encountered a unique and inspiring preschool environment unlike anything I had seen before. I watched children holding hands in a circle, singing songs together, and among them was a classmate in a wheelchair. When they spun around in a circle, his peers naturally assisted him, laughing and enjoying the moment together as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world.
Fast forward six years, and our dear friend Ange Shores, co-founder of Lil’ Friends Respite Care, encouraged several friends to enroll our children in Bal Swan Children's Center. Ange's daughter Brittany, who has diverse needs, had found a school that not only loved and supported her growth but also ensured she was an integral part of their special community. At Bal Swan, our daughter, born with the heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot, discovered a healthy learning environment where empathy and understanding were nurtured alongside her love of reading.
I fell in love with the school and its community and soon found myself volunteering on the committee that plans the annual Bal Swan Ball. It was there that I met my dear friend Tina Eichner. Through our volunteer work at Bal Swan, we developed a lifelong friendship that carried us through years of softball games, the teenage years, college days, and now, watching our grown children—who have also become lifelong friends—lead their own successful lives. Bal Swan gave me so much more than a place for my daughter to attend preschool.
Over the last 20 years I have seen the impact Bal Swan has had not only on my own family but on the Broomfield community as a whole. At the Broomfield City Council meeting on June 11, Mayor Guyleen Castiotta sent forth a proclamation that June 12, 2024, would be known as Bal Swan Children’s Center Day, in recognition of the Center’s commitment to providing authentic, individualized, inclusive education to our community. For the last 60 years, Bal Swan has provided the children of Broomfield with an educational home grounded in social and emotional development. It’s a place where children and families grow, belong, and contribute, helping Broomfield lead the country in inclusive education.
On June 12, 2024, Bal Swan celebrated this special day with their favorite people: staff, students, and families of alumni, current students, and new families just beginning their Bal Swan journey. All eyes are on the bright future Bal Swan is building with their expansion into the much-desired Kindergarten through 5th grade program. This evolution ensures that during this critical time of development, children and their parents receive the support they need. City Council member Paloma DelGadillo stated during the proclamation that she is “looking forward to seeing how Bal Swan continues to transform the lives of children in Broomfield.” Paloma, we are all eager and excited to witness Bal Swan’s next era.

Did you know that July is Wellness Month and is celebrated around the world? Starting in the 2000s, it was established to encourage people to build healthy relationships and improve their social well-being. I am all in!
I recently ran into Paul Derda at a graduation party. He is so fun to listen to – he always has so many interesting things to say and stories to tell. He is the epitome of someone who can connect with anyone. I have always admired this about him. He isn’t afraid to talk to strangers and makes it a routine part of his day to shine his light on others. These connections usually end with the person telling Paul that he made their whole week by talking with them and making them feel seen. I think of this often and try to live more like Mr. Derda. He is a living example of how to practice social wellness every single day.
I read recently that more than 30% of Americans are lonely. I feel it must be way more than that since most people stay connected through social media. And we all have heard how social media makes us feel the MOST disconnected.
Having a strong, high-quality social support system can offer physical, emotional, and psychological health benefits. It improves self-esteem, coping skills, stress relief, feelings of belonging, and overall mental health. This is our goal for social wellness.
Let’s take time this month to care for our social well-being and get off tech. Let’s connect with others the Paul Derda way, through social ties, groups, and the larger community. Here are some ideas for you to run with.
Spend quality time with family and friends. Have meaningful gatherings. Many times, large events
are fun but you leave feeling like there was not a deep connection with anyone. Plan smaller get togethers, have game nights, eat together outside without technology, ask each other questions, and really listen to the answers.
Another way to foster connection with others is to reconnect with old friends. Call an old roommate from college that you have not talked to in a long time. Ask an old coworker or boss to have lunch. Touch base with a favorite teacher that your kids had and remind them how meaningful they were to your family.
Just as important as connecting with others is to do it in a healthy manner. When forming new relationships or even managing existing ones, it’s important to do it with intention. Find common interests with them, show interest in their lives, listen actively, ask questions, be open and honest, trust and respect each other, and set boundaries to avoid relationship challenges.
More than anything, truly take the time to reach out to others and talk to strangers. See people. Really see them. Look them in the eye. Give a compliment. Help make the world a more positive place to be. We can each do our part.
May your actions and efforts this month come back to you tenfold and in inspiring, heartfelt ways that you never imagined possible.

Summer is the loveliest time in Colorado! The weather is warm, the sky is sunny, and trails are open to visitors. Enjoy the great outdoors and learn about the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB)’s beautiful trail system while being entered to win prizes by participating in the Broomfield 100!
The Broomfield 100 is an annual challenge to hike or bike 15 Broomfield trails between June and September, with the challenge wrapping up at Broomfield Days on September 21. Participants who visit each of the Broomfield 100 trails can turn in their completed passport at Broomfield Days and pick up a pair of custom Broomfield 100 socks. In addition, those who check-in at the trailhead check-in stations will be entered to win a monthly random drawing of the socks June through September. Check-in at more trails and you have more chances to win a pair of socks! To complete a loop or trail for the challenge, it is not necessary to cover the entire mileage of a trail, but rather to visit the site, learn the trail connections, and enjoy the area.
While hiking these trails, please respect trail guidelines to make your experience as enjoyable as possible! For your safety observe all posted signage/regulations and prepare yourself to be on trail by wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes and dressing for the weather. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, first aid equipment, and insect repellent. All Broomfield trails allow dogs (on-leash) and are open to bikes, walkers, etc. Many trails are ADA accessible, although some segments fall outside of
ADA guidelines for slope and trail width. Before using any mobility devices on the trails, trail users should refer to the ADA Trail information at Broomfield.org/Broomfield100.
Be kind to other trail users by practicing trail etiquette. Stay on the right side of the trail moving with the flow of traffic, except to pass on the left. Do not block the path by standing in the middle; leave at least half of the trail open for passing. When bicycling, slow down and notify other trail
Each week a different trail will be celebrated.
users before passing. Bicyclists must yield to hikers. Stay on existing trails to avoid creating new trails and causing damage to the landscape. A full trail etiquette guide can be found on the Broomfield Trail Map at Broomfield.org/TrailMap.
Each week a different trail will be celebrated, with guidance about what you will find along the trail, details about the trail’s history, and, when you might find free cold treats along the trail! For information on the designated trail of the week, follow CCOB’s social media channels or subscribe to the Broomfield Community Update Weekly Newsletter at Broomfield.org/ BinTheLoop.

In the operating rooms at AdventHealth Avista in Louisville, clinicians and healthcare administrators from across the country and around the world come to learn about the latest in technology that improves outcomes for patients.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Sharad Rajpal teaches visiting healthcare professionals about intraoperative surgical microscopes, real-time navigation systems and robotics used during surgery through a visiting clinician program in partnership with the hospital and Medtronics, which specializes in technology-driven healthcare tools.
Dr. Rajpal said the value proposition of such technologies is that they allow surgeons to treat patients more safely and effectively from the preoperative phase, through surgery and into recovery. Artificial intelligence tools, for example, can customize implants to the patient’s unique anatomy. During surgery, intraoperative navigation robots help surgeons operate with increased accuracy and ideally reduce complications. In the recovery phase, technology is targeted at helping patients go home sooner thanks to smaller incisions, less blood loss, and a decreased chance of infection. Information and knowledge gained through each surgery can then be analyzed through artificial intelligence to improve the technology for future patients and surgeries.
The ultimate value proposition, said Dr. Rajpal, is to get people back to doing what they do – being a parent or sibling or grandparent, and contributing to society.
Born in India, Dr. Rajpal moved to the United States when he was three years old and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. He spent his summers in India with his grandfather, a general practitioner, which inspired his interest in medicine. During a rotation through neurosurgical services, he found his specialty and then did a fellowship in spine surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.
When he had the opportunity to choose where he wanted to live and work, Colorado was one of his top choices. He
joined Boulder Neurosurgical & Spine Associates in 2010 and has been with AdventHealth Medical Group Spine and Neurosurgery for about two years focusing almost entirely on cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine surgery and the disease processes that affect the spine.
Dr. Rajpal has been an advocate for the use of technology in surgery since he was in training. In 2021, he was the first surgeon in the world to use Medtronic’s Mazor robotic technology for spinal surgery, and he credits AdventHealth and its administration with supporting the acquisition of technology to aid in surgery.
“It’s important to have good partnerships,” said Rajpal, “The success of any program is a partnership between the clinicians and the hospital administration who sees value in what you’re proposing, because you can’t just buy a bunch of expensive stuff that doesn’t provide value to patients.”
The AdventHealth Foundation currently is raising money within the community to buy a microscope for use in surgery.
Dr. Rajpal’s work with the visiting clinician program allows other healthcare physicians to see technology in action rather than sitting in a sterile lab. He has hosted surgeons from other states as well as from China, Panama, South America, Central America, Canada, and India. Visiting with clinicians from so many diverse places facilitates an exchange of ideas that he says is invaluable.
“How often do we have the opportunity to meet with other physicians from other countries – to understand their healthcare challenges, what they encounter, and how they treat problems? Because it’s not the same if you talk to a surgeon from China or India vs. somebody who’s coming from Wyoming or even somebody who comes up from Brazil. We all have our own healthcare systems, and we all have different healthcare challenges. It’s not so much selling a product as it is an exchange of ideas and an opportunity to showcase how technology can benefit our patients globally and not just in our own backyard. That’s what I love about it.”

is the way to eat this month, so join me in indulging in these easy, delicious and light RED, WHITE, AND BLUE smoothies while celebrating the month that marks our Independence. Smoothies don’t have to be for breakfast only. How about trying one during snack time, as a replacement for lunch or as dessert after dinner? There is never a time you can’t have one. You will feel a burst of energy that will last for hours. Before you get started I wanted to give you a few tips for making a super creamy smoothie. If you have one, use a high
Serves 1
• 1 ripe frozen banana
• 1 cup frozen cherries
• 1 Tbsp almond butter
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ¼ tsp almond extract
• ½ - 1 cup almond milk
Blend according to directions above. You can also add in two cups of fresh spinach but the vibrant red color will change. Adding cocoa nibs is a delicious treat.
power blender like a Vitamix. If you don’t, make sure you use a lot of liquid so that the smoothie can blend together nicely. Next, use frozen fruit. It keeps the smoothie thick, cold, and smooth unlike ice can. Also don’t be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick. Lastly, start the blender on low speed and gradually increase to the high speed to blend all of the ingredients. End with the blender on low again.
If you like to add in extra fiber and nutrition, experiment blending in ingredients like flaxseed meal, chia, or hemp seeds, or Greek yogurt or protein powder/collagen peptides.
Serves 1
• 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
• 2 frozen bananas
• ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
• 1 ½ cups coconut milk
Blend according to directions above. If this becomes too thick, add water. If you like it sweeter, add a few drops of stevia liquid.
Serves 2
• 1 cup frozen wild blueberries
• ½ frozen banana
• 5 ounces vanilla Greek yogurt
• 1 Tbsp almond butter
• ¾ cup almond milk
• ¼ cup gluten free rolled oats
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ¼ tsp cinnamon Cobbler Topping:
• 2 Tbsp oat or almond flour
• 2 Tbsp gluten free rolled oats
• 1 Tbsp coconut sugar
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• 2 tsp coconut oil OR butter OR ghee

Enhance Life Chiropractic goes beyond chiropractic care, offering affordable sports physicals for middle and high school students. Success in fitness and wellness is all about having a realistic and manageable plan within a supportive environment. If you are looking to transform your wellness journey, Nutri-Fit by Natalie is the place for you. At Nutri-Fit, you’re part of a family. The fitness studio takes customer service and your goals to the next level, customizing each aspect of every program to fit the client’s personal needs.
Owner Natalie Brockeveldt said, “I am passionate about safely guiding individuals along their wellness journey by merging the science between nutrition and fitness. Together, we work through obstacles, build confidence, make lasting lifestyle changes, and get results.”
1. Strategize Your Nutritional Goals: Commence your summer wellness journey by formulating a sensible nutrition plan. Opt for a variety of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to improve vitality and fortify your physique. As a nutritionist, I recommend you approach each meal as an opportunity to increase your nutrient profile. Add blueberries, olive oil, chia seeds, spinach, salmon, etc. Eat well, feel well.
2. Hydration For Performance:
Did you know that being even slightly dehydrated can decrease mental and physical performance by up to 30%? To maintain optimal cellular function and promote synergetic physiological well-being, aim to drink a variety of refreshing beverages throughout the day. Add electrolytes or fruit as a tasty way to increase hydration. Currently, my favorite flavor is cucumber mint.
3. Flex Your Fitness:
Elevate your fitness routine with a splash of creativity this summer. Engage in family-friendly physical activities like paddle boarding, beach volleyball, golf or group exercise classes. Grab an accountability partner or hire a personal trainer to keep you motivated when life gets busy. We would love to tailor a custom plan for you!
4. Incorporate Daily Movement:
Create a daily routine that adds more movement. Try stretching every hour to encourage better posture. Go for a walk after dinner to aid in digestion. Ride your bike to work. Park further away at the grocery store. Play with pets. Put the screens down. Every little bit counts.
5. Embrace Culinary Diversity:
Summer brings a variety of delicious foods. Experiment with recipes that include heirloom vegetables and local fruits. I recommend expanding your nutritional horizons by using fresh herbs as a healthy way to flavor your food. Make it a family affair or invite the neighbors. Step out of our comfort zone and find a new favorite dish! Call 720-437-0522 or visit www.nutrifitbynatalie.com today to learn more!
Jane’s Testimonial:
“I started working with Natalie in 2014. I had hit a plateau in my weight loss; I needed someone who knew about women’s hormones to help me get past the block. Then life happened! I had multiple surgeries that resulted in deeper hormone issues, two autoimmune diseases, and about 40+ pounds of weight gain. It was around the start of Covid and I decided to come back to Nutri-Fit because I knew it worked. She offered me a couple of free classes and I haven’t looked back! Somehow Natalie has made me the most consistent, physically fit, mentally balanced person I have been in a long time! I have gone from a size 14 to a 6 and kept the weight off, I say size because I don’t really concentrate on the scale (I’m busy building muscle). The environment Natalie has created with her classes, trainers, and events have kept me engaged for four years! I am so grateful for this place and community that allow me to look forward to exercising so I can continue to age gracefully.”

Q: What do you most enjoy about your profession as an attorney?

A: I have a large spectrum of interests but mostly I like being outdoors doing anything from working to playing. Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?
A: My favorite park is Midway Park. It is outside my office and I have seen it used for diverse purposes by the community since

A: Paul Derda

I placed in the top three in the Veterans Nationals eleven times and won both Greco and Freestyle Veterans Nationals a combined total of four times. I also wrestled high school, college, and the Senior freestyle circuit for a number of years over two different periods of time.

A: Come here, establish your roots, take in what Broomfield has to offer, but most importantly, give back to Broomfield however and whenever you can.
Q: What or who inspires you to be a better person?
A: Hard question because I take inspiration from so many sources. Mostly, it is internal.

Does visiting your doctor’s office make your palms sweaty and your heart race? You may be experiencing a phenomenon called white coat syndrome or white coat hypertension, which is the persistence of elevated blood pressure readings and/or elevated heart rate at your physician’s office. White coat hypertension is fairly common and affects roughly 25% of people. It is experienced more frequently among women, older patients, and those with mild hypertension.
A healthy blood pressure reading is around 120/80, those experiencing white coat syndrome typically experience a higher-than-normal reading due to anxiety. Your physician may wish to have you monitor your blood pressure for more regular and accurate readings at home to rule out real hypertension. Caffeine, stress, or a high sodium diet can also increase blood pressure. Persistent high blood pressure can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and other cardiovascular conditions, so it’s important to make sure that your blood pressure is under control. If white coat syndrome is something you struggle with, keep these few tips in mind before your next doctor’s visit: Sometimes taking your mind off of having your blood pressure taken can help. Try
to keep a positive mindset and take some deep breaths.
Practice stress relief like breath work or thinking of a place where you feel most at peace.
Start up a conversation with your care provider or try a distraction technique like wiggling your toes or thinking about the lyrics to your favorite song.
Health anxiety on the other hand, is something that can affect the quality of life by those who experience it. If you’re one who spends hours googling symptoms or fearing that you may have a serious or life-threatening illness, you may be dealing with health anxiety. Seen in 5-10% of people, this common condition affects men and women equally. According to Harvard Health, some telltale signs of health anxiety may include:
Having no symptoms, but still fearing you are sick.
Reassuring test results or consulting with a medical provider do not bring you peace of mind.
If you see a news story or social media post about a disease or illness and you start to worry that you may have it.
Overcoming health anxiety is possible! Nurse Practitioner, Ann Marie Albright with AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine in Erie shares that partnering with your provider is key.
“As providers, we want to get to know our patients, and we want them to come to us with their concerns and fears. Your primary care office should be the place
our patients feel they can come frequently so they can share that weight of their anxiety with their provider,” said Ann Marie. “The provider can give reasoning to why they should or should not worry about what they are experiencing. With those experiencing health anxiety, patients can feel like they aren’t heard, or like they are crying wolf. Primary care is there to talk about it and find the answers to put it to bed or work it up if need be. But letting it balloon into something that’s more is a heavy weight to bear on your own. People know their bodies - the partnership is so powerful between patient and provider.”
Ann Marie encourages those who struggle with health anxiety to be open with their provider about their feelings. “When our patients are willing to be open and vulnerable with us, it’s so valuable to have that insight on how they are feeling. It can be exhausting to struggle with anxiety and isolating because patients want to feel heard and taken seriously. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Instead of burying your feelings and keeping them to yourself, give them to someone who can help you hold that weight. Life is hard enough; you don’t have to deal with health anxiety alone.”
A few ways that Ann Marie partners with her patients who deal with health anxiety is to see them on a more frequent basis to help build a trusting and lasting relationship. Listening to her patients is something that she finds to be incredibly impactful for the patient and for herself in gaining the knowledge she needs to best move forward with their concerns. Many times, those who have health anxiety may also have underlying mild anxiety so it can be helpful to treat that as well. Whether it be through cognitive therapy, or through medications, anxiety and health anxiety are treatable!
