Broomfield Days is in Your Heart
EDITOR & PUBLISHER
Tina Eichner BUSINESS MANAGER
Pat Eichner ART DIRECTOR/DESIGN
The first Broomfield Days that I can remember was in 1976. Back then, Broomfield Days was held over the Fourth of July and that year it happened to also be the Bi-Centennial of the United States and Colorado’s 100th Birthday. You may know that Colorado is sometimes referred to as the Centennial State, having entered the Union 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a hot day! My family had found a place on Midway Blvd. right in front of the Fire Station. Even with the magnitude of the occasion and the large draw that Broomfield Days brings, it was much easier to find a seat on the parade route back then. After all, the population of Broomfield was fewer than 7,000 compared with more than 70,000 and still growing today. I was just six years old, but I vividly remember the scene. Huge, magnificent American flags waving down Midway; happy bustling families; grand music from marching bands; clowns and cars and joy! And that hot day was cured with a sweet, drippy snow cone. I was standing with my parents and my sister waiting for the Kohl Elementary Band to pass by. My older brother was playing the clarinet. I was excited, and even at that young age, I felt proud of my community. Having lived in Broomfield most of my life, the years are peppered with Broomfield Days memories. For those of us long-timers, Broomfield Days is in a way no different than Christmas or the 4th of July. It is an annual tradition, attached to countless memories and feelings and expectations. To food, family, friends, and fun. In later years, I marched as a Broomfield High School cheerleader and rode in a convertible as part of the High School Homecoming royalty. After that, I marched with my kids and their elementary schools. I exhibited in the park with different businesses, and a few years ago marched as a dancer for the 2016 Broomfield Dancing with the Stars. You just don’t miss Broomfield Days. I am not sure I ever have! This year, we will all miss it. It is just another casualty of COVID. But the spirit of Broomfield is far greater than a single event. Our community is more than a gathering in the park. It is more than bands and flags and music and food and people. We will miss it this year. We will stay safe. We will heal. But look out for next year. The spirit of Broomfield Days lives in our hearts. In this issue, I am honored to share an interview with Mr. Paul Derda reflecting on Broomfield Days past. It is in no way a replacement for hearing him call the parade and shout out to thousands throughout the morning, but for this year, we will take a few memories and the smiles that go with them. Thanks for reading,
Tina Eichner

INSPIRATION FOR
BUSY FAMILIES A Formula for Happiness When People Annoy By Lisa Payne
The world feels so heavy right now. Politics, pandemic, rioting, kids back in school in a very different way. A lot of conflicting energy is circulating around this beautiful world and it can be hard to navigate our feelings day to day. And when we do navigate them, it can be scary to face what we are seeing within ourselves. The good news is that we can always redirect our own emotions. The not so good news is that it can be difficult to be around others who we disagree with or who downright annoy us. With the world in the state that it is in, I thought it would be good to talk about ways to look at things differently when others push your buttons. We will always have to deal. It will be your boss, your coworker, your family, your friends or your spouse. And always the stranger who cuts you off in traffic or gives you obscene gestures for no reason. That situation takes a lot of deep breathing. Over the years I’ve had to tell myself that they must be trying to get to the hospital in an emergency and I switch to empathy. That immediately calms me down. When I look at my own relationships, there are always times I feel annoyed. And even when I know who people are at their core, I can be just as surprised and critical the one hundredth time something happens as the first. I keep expecting a different outcome. And then I read an article from Michele Weiner-Davis who founded The Divorce Busting Center in Boulder. It completely changed how I think. And her advice is so simple. Her magic formula for happiness in life is to let people be who they are. We already KNOW who they are. They are predictable. We know what to expect and yet we are always disappointed when they do something they’ve been doing for years. Maybe you have a friend who is always late, or a boss who talks down to you, or a brother who never answers your calls or a spouse who can’t seem to get dishes from the sink to the dishwasher. And these are minor examples. If we are choosing to have these people in our life, what we need to focus on during these moments is what drew us to them in the first place. We love them because of all of the good they bring into our lives. Even if we don’t love someone (coworker) but have to deal with them, this is the time to find something good about them and focus on that. Every single one of us has lovable qualities and ones that aren’t so easy to live with. We are a package deal. Let’s stop trying to change what we can’t and start focusing on the wonderful things that define the relationship. So the next time Monica is late, expect that, and look forward to all the laughs you are going to have listening to her silly stories. When your spouse leaves yet
16
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | September 2020
another dirty dish in the sink, think about the effort she/he has made by bringing you coffee every morning for 20 years or helping with the laundry. When your child leaves a trail of clothes from the front door to their room, be grateful you HAVE a child who you get to care for. Find gratitude for the people in your life, today. There is never a guarantee of having a tomorrow. Love with your whole heart and offer a simple apology on the days you can’t hold it together. We are human and we are all doing the best we can with what we know. Exhale others negative energy and hope they inhale your inner peace. Lisa Payne is a Broomfield resident and mother of four growing children.

One Book One Broomfield Selection Aims to Connect Community to Colorado
“Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country” By Missy Ruzicka
In this year of everything being up in the air, it’s nice to have the comfort of something normal even if it’s handled a little differently than in years past. It can be hard to feel like we are part of a community when we have been in our homes since March, but once again our library comes to the rescue announcing One Book One Broomfield for 2020, and giving us the sense of the community we’ve been missing through the wonder of literature.
18
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | September 2020
This year the selected book is “Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country” written by award-winning author, Pam Houston, best known for her book “Cowboys Are My Weakness.” Deep Creek is a memoir filled with the love of mother earth, her animals, and humanity. The Colorado-based book is the winner of 2020 Reading the West Advocacy Award and the 2020 Colorado Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Between the beautiful imagery of her 120-acre ranch located by Creed, Colorado, and her love of nature, the author brings a message of hope even in uncertain times. In this nonfiction tale, a city girl puts all her money down on a
ranch that she fell in love with on first sight. Through twenty years of caring for the land and all its critters, she discovers that the land has taken care of her and helped her begin to heal from her childhood traumas. Those of us from Colorado know exactly how the fresh mountain air has the ability to calm and help us focus on things that really matter. I found a strong connection to Colorado and the calmness and hope that comes with it while reading Deep Creek on my back deck in the middle of a pandemic. One Book One Broomfield is a unique program that brings the community together by encouraging us to read the same book and share our love of reading through discussions and events celebrating the title of the year. The beloved community project started back in 2006 with “The Meadow” by James Gavin and has had many wonderful books over the years. Some of the favorites of years past are include: “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jamie Ford, “Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch, and last year’s selection “Beautiful Boy” by David Sheff. In 2019 the program was extended with One Book One Broomfield Junior. Being an elementary school librarian, this has me very excited because children bond quickly over beloved books. The inaugural author was Mac Barnett, author of many wonderful children’s books like Extra Yarn and Sam and Dave Dig a whole. This year’s event was postponed due to the pandemic that must not be named, but we are very excited to have the amazing two-time Newberry award winner Kate DiCamillo as the selected author in April 2021. DiCamillo has written many favorites like Because of Winn Dixie and Tale of Despereaux. These titles and extra copies of “Deep Creek” can be found at the library for easy check out. Choosing a book for the entire community to bond over is not an easy assignment but a committee of community members is up to the task every year. They chose Houston’s wonderful book for many reasons; but it being based in our Colorado mountains was just an added bonus to the already great tale of her journey as a writer, a woman, a survivor of childhood abuse, and a rancher. Houston’s descriptions of our Colorado landscapes along with its beauty, challenges, grief, and the rewards of life in the Colorado high country are truly the heart of this book that touched the committee members. The library programming staff has some pretty remarkable virtual events coming up before the author event in November. Programs currently in the planning stages include a creative writing workshop, a presentation of hiking through the front range, and a CSU extension lecture. All events will build up discussions leading to the virtual author talk with Pam Houston on November 5 at 7:00 p.m. which will be livestreamed and distributed widely through Broomfield Library and Cultural Affairs social media channels. Keep up to date on all the exciting programs and registration info at www.broomfield.org/onebook. I’m looking forward to ‘seeing’ you all there.

rief, rugged, and unique, the nearby Lake Link Trail in the Lac Amora Open Space is administered by the Broomfield Parks Department and connects with McKay Lake to the east and Josh’s Pond to the west. It also connects to Boulder County trails and routes via the Rock Creek Trail system. The outing is about 2.25-miles, or approximately 4,500 steps for those who make use of a pedometer. To begin the short walk, go west and briefly down from the street where it is recommended you park. Turn left, southward along the broad crusher-fine footpath. The trail winds its way north to south, giving hikers spacious views of untouched open prairie lands. You can see the Omni Interlocken Resort and all along the Front Range in the distance. The route parallels the Burlington Northern Railroad for a brief stretch. Eventually you’ll see a gate on your right — that trail segment connects to the Rock Creek Trail, a part of Boulder County Open Space property. Stay left and in about a half-mile continue trending left where the trail branches, walking up a slight incline. Here you’ll connect to the short route circling tiny Josh’s Pond. There are several picnic tables and a dock bordering the lake. As you loop around

the water, look for the fish-themed, whimsical art bench designed by artist Gary Hauschulz near the lake shore. The pond is stocked with fish and edged with cattails and is home to a variety of urban critters such as eagles, ducks, geese, prairie dogs, rabbits, and coyotes. The footpath etched through these sloping grassy meadows was constructed in 1997. This neighborhood jewel attracts local anglers, runners, and families with children, and those of us who like to hike in solitude with our dogs. Enjoy the meander before returning the way you came.

2020 Broomfield Days Cancelled Due to COVID
B
roomfield Days is our City’s annual hometown festival. Held for decades, the one-day event is held the third weekend in September each year. Broomfield Days includes a myriad of activities including a parade, trade fair, car show, kids’ activities, a clown contest, rides, games, food, music, entertainment, pet activities, a 5K run, bingo, a golf tournament, pancake breakfast, and much, much more. The annual festival is the single largest and most equivocally Broomfield event of the year. It is a time for tradition, memories, old and new friends, and celebration of all that is wonderful about our town. This year, Broomfield Days will not be held in order to keep the community safe from possible COVID impacts.
From the City of Broomfield Broomfield’s number one priority is the health and safety of residents. The difficult decision to cancel Broomfield Days was a public health decision based on the data and gathering size restrictions in the state’s public health orders. Current limitations are set at 175 people, with a maximum of 500 people allowed to gather if Broomfield is approved for the next,
highest current available level, Protect Our Neighbor. Broomfield Days typically records between 15,000 and 25,000 people in one day, on one block of Midway Boulevard. As we continue to navigate these uncertain times, one thing stands true – we are proud of all Broomfield residents for stepping up to do their part to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus. When our beloved Broomfield Days returns in 2021 it will be bigger, better, and brighter than ever before. In the meantime, we ask you to share with us your photos and favorite memories of Broomfield Days gone by. We’d love to see photos of vendor booths from Broomfield Days inception, a pic of you as a kid walking in the parade in the ’80s and ’90s, or a float cruising down Midway when Broomfield was still a small town. Share them on your social media pages with hashtag #BroomfieldDaysMemories or email them to yourbroomfield@ broomfield.org. I think the first time I participated in the Broomfield Days parade was when my daughter (who is now married and in her 30s) started at Emerald Elementary. Following behind Snortner listening to all the little kids scream and shout was so much fun. Over the years I walked with Emerald some more, a Brownie troupe, FRIENDS of Broomfield, a half a dozen political campaigns, including my own, City Council, and probably a couple of others that blend into the past. I’ve worked a zero waste booth, helped out at vendor booths, and for the last three Broomfield Days helped organize the trade show portion and even held “Trade Show Tips” to teach people get the most out of their booths. Living in the heart of Broomfield - I only live a few blocks away from Midway Park - my family and I were able to walk to and from the event. For the first time since I started getting involved with my community, this mainstay will be missing. While I understand and agree with the reasons it had to be canceled, that does not make it any easier. I feel a hole where a piece of our town lives within me and it will be difficult to heal. The Great American Picnic was hard to give up, but not like this. Being on the Fourth of July, we shared the Great American Picnic with the rest of the nation. Broomfield Days is uniquely our own and will be mourned until it comes back bigger and better next year.

Broomfield’s Builders Paul Derda: The Heart, Soul, and Voice of Broomfield Recreation and Events By Tina Eichner
The year was 1978 and the community of Broomfield was booming. City programs were growing and expanding and an opportunity in recreation brought a newcomer to town. Then City Manager George DiCiero hired a new Director of Parks and Recreation. His name was Paul Derda.
He would not be a newcomer for long. Through the years, his name would become a local household name and later the moniker for a beloved Broomfield gathering place. But Paul Derda is an extremely unique person. I dare say for as many people who know his name, he knows just as many names of local residents. No one is a stranger in Paul’s world. I have known Paul since I was a child. He is an usher at my church and as an active teen, I frequently encountered him in sports and recreation programs as have thousands upon thousands of other Broomfield young people and families. He was one of my first “professional” journalism interviews in 1988 when I profiled him for a feature article in the Broomfield High School newspaper. A few weeks ago I had the chance to interview Paul again, over breakfast at Le Peep. The topic was the cancellation of the 2020 Broomfield Days due to COVID. Paul began by talking fondly about his decades as Director of Parks and Recreation, working with George DiCiero and helping other Broomfield leaders implement a Master Plan for Broomfield, “We wanted a park within walking distance of every young person, without needing to cross a major artery. We met that goal. That is true in Broomfield today.” Broomfield Days was started in 1957 by the Jaycees. Back then it was called the Broomfield Boom. There was a pancake breakfast, a parade, family games, and bingo – traditions that still hold today. In those first years, Broomfield

Days was held over the 4th of July. The Jaycees, the Optimists, the Lions, and the Rotary all came together to support the event. In 1981, management of the event was moved to the City, with continuing support from many individuals and organizations. “We also moved the date,” he recalled. Paul noted that the third weekend in September was chosen due to more desirable weather and the fact that schools would be back in session
and there would be greater participation from bands and school groups. “Since moving to the fall format, we’ve been blessed with good weather, sometimes windy, sometimes cloudy, sometimes cold, and sometimes hot. Only once in the early 90s, at about 2:30 p.m., well after the parade was over, we got hammered with a hail storm. The creek was rising, and all the tents were packed. When it was all over, people just went back to having a good time.” Through the years the parade and the weekend of events ballooned. “Broomfield Days expanded with the community and the growth of organizations and their greater involvement.” As Paul remembered his early days helping with the event, he noted, “This would have been my 40th year announcing.” Paul has been involved in countless events and activities through the years, but annually it is the Great American Picnic for the 4th of July, Broomfield Days, and the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting – three events that Paul emcees each year. This year both the Picnic and Broomfield Days were cancelled due to COVID, but Paul is hopeful for the Christmas Tree Lighting. If you have ever attended any of these events, or gone to Paul Derda Recreation Center, or have kids in sports, or support any of Broomfield’s non-profit activities, you have probably come across Paul. And if you have met him, he will remember you by name. If you have not met him, he will still greet you in a way that makes you feel like you have just had an exchange with an old, dear friend. It is his gift. As is his love for all things Broomfield. In our 90-minute breakfast, we reminisced and shared stories and talked about the dozens upon dozens of people each of us know who
Paul with his wife Martha and great grand daughter Madeline Mackenzie
shaped this community. And Paul said he did not want to leave anyone out and he did not want this to be an article about him, but an article about Broomfield Days. But in many ways, Paul is Broomfield Days. I am trusting he will forgive me for highlighting his role. He stressed that the cancellation this year is the right thing to do and that nothing is more important than keeping our community safe. “Being the emcee for Broomfield Days, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Fourth of July in Broomfield has been the single greatest honor of my life. Working alongside our Police and Fire Department, all of the City Departments, and the dozens of other Broomfield organizations that make these events happen is a privilege. They are the best and the brightest.” “And next year, Broomfield Days will be back, bigger and better than ever,” he concluded. Yes. Yes, it will, Paul.

Bal Swan Children’s Center
Adapts Groundbreaking Approaches to Inclusive Learning in COVID Reality By Allison Eichner
As many of us feel we are entering uncharted waters heading back to school this fall, I think we can find peace in knowing teachers and school faculty are doing all they can to keep kids safe. Bal Swan Children’s Center is no different, with plans for a socially distant fall while still promoting inclusivity among students. The start of the school day looks drastically different for teachers, students, and parents. Before entering the building, students are dropped off by their parents, temperature checked, then taken inside by a teacher. Bal Swan’s Executive Director Debbie Kunz said their drop-off procedure is one of the biggest adaptations they are asking parents to make. Parents can help staff make this process smoother by taking their child’s temperature before coming to school and “making good-byes quick and being prepared to answer the health screening questions.” Kunz also advised parents to start “affirming the children they can adapt to this new normal. Talking about this with the child will help the child come to school less anxious and more prepared.” Children also have to wear a face covering to enter the building, so families can practice mask wearing at home to help kids get used to having it on for extended periods of time. Teachers are also getting creative with new strategies to explain and encourage the changes happening at school to students. Bal Swan often uses “social stories” to explain new concepts to students. These stories, paired with pictures, help introduce ideas from how to play with friends to what to do if they get separated from a parent. Now, teachers will introduce social stories about wearing a mask, social distancing, and how to stay safe. Although, Kunz is not worried about students adapting and learning new school practices. “So far, the children have been teachers to us!” she said, “They are so adaptable and resilient. They are internalizing the message to socially distance and are very compliant with face coverings.” At Bal Swan, socially distanced play looks very similar but with an individualized approach. Students will have their own “art tub” full of supplies. They still explore, create, and play at the same table as their friends, just without sharing Play-Doh and markers. Students are also going to have their own hula hoops for group activities to encourage social distancing. These will help give students a physical guideline without it feeling like a punishment. Teachers are also adopting extra language to communicate
28
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | September 2020
effectively with students. Many children rely on facial expressions to make meaning, and with everyone wearing masks teachers lose that mode of communication. To combat that, teachers are making an extra effort to explain things multiple ways and utilize body language to bridge any communication gaps. Bal Swan is grateful for continued support from parents and community members and, because their school year is looking a little different, their areas for support look a little different too. Debbie Kunz said the school is accepting hand sanitizer and disinfectant or monetary donations to buy cleaning supplies. Much of their custodial attention has been shifted inside, so the school is looking for volunteers to help with weed pulling, landscaping, and lawn mowing. To support the school, businesses and individuals are invited to sponsor or attend Bal Swan’s two major fundraisers for the year, The Bal Swan Golf Tournament and the Bal Swan Ball. For more information on how to donate to Bal Swan Children’s Center, to volunteer, or to attend one of their fundraising events, please visit www.balswan.org.

Puts on a Performance of
Persistence During Pandemic By Kristen Beckman
“The show must go on!”
Even during a pandemic.
Broomfield’s BackStory Theatre learned quickly this spring how true that familiar theater mantra really is when COVID-19 shut down in-person programming for many organizations. The theatre was forced to cancel its summer show, but the theatre’s leadership and staff made sure other programming would continue in creative and virtual ways, and the theatre is determined to present its fall production of Seussical in November.

HOW YOU CAN HELP While the persistence of the staff and performers at BackStory Theatre have ensured that shows and classes have continued despite challenges and limitations, funding for the theatre’s operations has been hard hit by COVID-19. Participation fees, class registrations, and tickets sales during the summer and fall months usually provide a significant portion of the theatre’s funding, along with grants. With grant funding becoming tighter this year, and the loss of revenue from class fees and ticket sales, the theatre is looking for creative funding options and donations from the community. To help, visit www.backstorytheatre.org
R
ather than hosting in-person auditions for the fall performance, the theatre is asking performers to submit audition videos virtually. Studio space had to be measured and blocked to ensure social distancing during a scaled-back lineup of summer classes. Instead of a cast and crew of 30, the production will be limited to 20 performers, with actors serving as their own crew. On-stage, performers will have to maintain social distancing and may have to wear masks. Normally there would be four live performances, including a free showing for lower-income elementary school students with a cast Q&A following the show. This year, the theatre is working out how to produce the show virtually in case a live audience isn’t possible. That may mean replacing show days with production days that would include fully performing one act, then cleaning props and microphones and resetting the stage to produce the next act on day two. Ultimately, the entire production would be edited together and presented on a virtual platform, said Mary Wilkie, Executive Director of BackStory Theatre. Many details remain to be figured out, but the theatre and its staff are determined to make sure the show does, in fact, go on. BackStory Theatre was founded in 2006 to provide theater performance and education opportunities in the Broomfield community, which at the time had few performing arts programs for youth other than dance. In recent years, the theater has focused on ensuring inclusivity and accessibility so any child who wants to experience the theatre is able to do so. That means working with adaptive devices, understanding the needs of performers with autism or different mental and physical needs, welcoming performers from all races and backgrounds, and creating opportunities for scholarships and work study to allow families who face financial challenges to participate, said Wilkie.
In typical times, BackStory Theatre offers skill and performance-based classes for ages 18 months to 18 years, auditioned youth stage performances for fully-staged production, grant-funded free programs in schools and community spaces, and teen leadership programs. When COVID-19 hit in March, the theatre transitioned six in-person classes that to an online format and then found ageappropriate ways to engage participants. “Every one of those classes was between one and five weeks out from a final performance that should have been held on stage,” Wilkie said. “One we converted to a character study and each of the actors considered how their character would have responded to COVID and presented a song or dance over Zoom.” Younger kids created puppets or costumes at home and practiced how to perform via digital media. The theatre’s school-based program wrapped up with an online video and a package sent to each participant. The theatre even launched a series of free online community classes beginning in April to help get kids moving, creating, and playing. “I’m so proud of our staff,” said Wilkie. “We did not miss a single day of teaching.” September 2020 | Our Broomfield™ Magazine

Cook Up Some Love By Lisa Payne
I recently saw a post going around asking the question: If you had an hour to talk with anybody, who would it be? There were different answers, but the overall majority of respondents said they wanted an hour to talk to a grandparent who was no longer here. Anyone who knows me knows that I am incredibly passionate about capturing our loved ones stories before it’s too late. So you can imagine the huge inhale/exhale of mixed emotions I took reading those answers. An inhale of hope for those lucky enough to have grandparents alive that they can still ask the questions, and at the same time an exhale of sadness for those whose grandparents have already passed. Unfortunately I don’t have grandparents alive any longer to ask the questions of what was life like when they were kids, or what was the biggest lesson they learned in life and what was their one regret? But I did spend a few weeks each summer visiting my grandparents in Wisconsin, gathering memories of playing with cousins and eating food fresh from the garden. Of sitting on my grandpa’s lap watching the Milwaukee Braves (now the Brewers) or listening to my other grandpa tell endless stories of playing all the wind instruments in big bands back in the 40s. I had one grandma who always had a glass of orange juice waiting for me on her kitchen table when I woke up, and another one who was up at the crack of dawn baking her signature kringle and cinnamon rolls. These memories make up who I am. And for me, the smells from their kitchens can bring me right back to those lazy summer days where there isn’t a care in the world. I’m sure most of you have at least one recipe that was handed down from a grandparent or great grandparent. You know the one, that recipe card with the food splattered all over it from making it so many times. Preserve these! Laminate them, especially if the recipe is in their handwriting. What a gift to hand down to your own children someday. Many years ago when my grandma was still alive, I gathered all of her recipes and made a cookbook for our entire extended family. I gathered stories of her cooking to include with each recipe. I laugh now looking at that cookbook with the terrible editing and misaligned margins. But no matter the format, I am so thankful to have that cookbook and those memories today. To honor all grandparents who have given us so many warm memories through cooking, I am going to share a family recipe that comes from my German heritage. German potato salad! My grandma made this for us and it has always been my favorite potato salad. The warm, melt in your mouth potatoes along with the salty bacon and tangy vinegar… heaven. It is a great picnic and potluck food since it can be left out at room temperature longer than mayo-based salads. Use this recipe, or bring out your own family recipes and cook up some love today!

Broomfield’s Builders Jack and Penny TerHar
Carry Legacy of 60-Year Family Business and Lasting Broomfield Impacts By Tina Eichner
The year 2020 might be marked indelibly by events of the day, but for many it was meant to be marked quite differently. In 1960, Sill-TerHar Ford opened in Broomfield, Colorado. When the 60th anniversary rolled around this summer, “We still celebrated,” noted Penny TerHar, describing the socially distant celebration for staff with food trucks in the parking lot. They celebrated the long-standing Broomfield business that was started by Hugo Sill and Jack TerHar, Sr. in 1960 when Highway 287 was a two-lane dirt road, and 120th was the major throughway to Denver. Jack TerHar Jr. started selling cars for his father at Sill-TerHar in 1973, shortly after graduating from Broomfield High School and completed a buyout of the dealership in 1989, later overseeing a major expansion of the business and the addition of several car lines. I interviewed Jack and Penny in their home this summer and very much enjoyed catching up with my old friends and neighbors. I grew up on the next block over from where they raised their family and helped out with their daughters when I was a teen. Jack TerHar Jr. also grew up in Broomfield and described his youth fondly. He remembers playing
34
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | September 2020
ball with Broomfield’s most famous dog, Shep (stay tuned for more about Shep in our November Pets issue). He remembers Broomfield Little League in 1963 when teams were sponsored by the Lions Club and the Rotary Club. There were two teams in the league that played each other in three games per week. Jack described how Broomfield was different then.
“You could get from the high school to the drug store in five minutes. The population was just over 6,000. A lot of people left Broomfield after high school, but many of them came back,” he said. Jack remembers his Dad working very hard to build the dealership and making it part of the community from the start. He recalled how in 1962 the nascent city was struggling and did not have enough money to fund the police department. Broomfield’s first Police Chief, Lenny Bishop, was driving a leased car from the dealership and the City could not make the payments. But Jack Sr. told him to “just keep driving the car.” That went on for six months until City Council worked out the budget. It was the start of a strong and lasting partnership with the community. Jack and Penny credit Broomfield’s leadership teams through the years with having solid vision and planning to help guide the growth of the City. And the two have been actively involved in numerous Broomfield Civic activities through the years, including supporting the creation of the Broomfield Community Foundation. Jack stated that Broomfield’s strong programs for kids and youth support the family atmosphere here and that people are drawn to Broomfield because of it. While this year marks the 60th year of Sill-TerHar Motors, For Jack, it is 47 years of working in the business. He is now semi-retired. Penny laughed saying, “Semi-retired still comes out to working about 40 hours a week.” Their marriage is as lasting as Jack’s career – 47 years – and while Penny has worked at the business through the years, she primarily held
the responsibility for raising their two children in the 80s and 90s while Jack grew the business. “When you work 75 hours a week there is not a lot of balance,” he said. And so they have always been true partners. The car business shaped the family and was part of the language in the house when their two daughters were growing up; 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Penny noted that as a result both girls have strong business minds. They recalled the rough spots of running a business with the recessions being the toughest times, especially the 80s. Sill-TerHar Motors expanded in 2001 and now includes Aston Martin, Volvo, Jaguar and luxury pre-owned vehicles. The two remembered the impacts of 9-11, noting that there are similarities to what we are all experiencing now – in business and in life. Today Sill-TerHar Motors enjoys “being a small family-owned dealership because it affords us the luxury of treating our customers as friends instead of profits,” and “prides itself on being dedicated to customer service, while offering competitive pricing and a great and varied selection.” Strong values for a family business serving the community over 60 years.

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to Broomfield.org/Wastewater
