SIGHTS & SOUNDS OF THE SEASON DECEMBER LOWER LEVEL NEAR COACH
FOR ALL THINGS HOLIDAY SCAN BELOW!

I am writing this column from Houston, Texas, where my daughter and her family live. This holiday season looks a little different from others as we are waiting on an extra special gift. My daughter and son-in-law are awaiting the birth of my second grandson in the first part of December, and so I have temporarily relocated to help out and wait for his arrival.
This will be my first Christmas season ever NOT in Broomfield. And while I will miss the normal rhythms and traditions of the season at home, I look forward to preparing for the new baby and holding him in my arms under the lights of their twinkling tree one day very soon; and also getting a taste of a Texas Christmas.
Place does not matter as much as the spirit of hope and love, the people we hold dear, the magic of the holiday, and the wonder of children. I have all of that in Broomfield, and now in Texas too. Simply too many blessings to count.
I just love our cover Santa smiling straight to you from Flatirons Mall. I took my girls there each year for the classic visit and photo. One year as older teenagers, the girls surprised me by going for a visit and bringing me home a photo together on Santa's lap. They knew how much the tradition meant to me and so they carried it on. The photo is still a favorite. And now I have the treasure of reliving that kind of magic as a grandma!
For those of you who are remaining in Broomfield this month and seeking ways to spark the holiday spirit, this issue is filled with local shopping suggestions, special events, music, and merriment all over town!
In addition to seeing Santa, some of my favorite local holiday activities include taking in the city lights on Midway Blvd., shopping our local holiday craft fairs, Nativity's Christmas Eve Mass at midnight, and sharing homemade goodies with friends and neighbors.
As we close out the year and prepare for 2026, once again I am thankful. Thankful for my husband and daughters; thankful for friends and greater family, thankful for home and health. And I am thankful to steward this modest magazine in service to readers, advertisers, and community. Thank you to all who are part of it! I appreciate all of you!
Wishing you magic and blessings this holiday!

Every year when the holidays roll around, I never know which morning is going to kick off the marathon of Hallmark shows for my husband. This year it was early November, the earliest he has ever started. As I descended the stairs, I could hear the familiar tone of the show before I hit the bottom step. And I smiled to myself, knowing I would find him tucked under his fuzzy blanket, coffee in hand, with the most content smile on his face.
That morning when he heard me in the kitchen he came over and started hugging me and swaying a little like a slow dance. He was humming. His eyes were closed. This simple tradition of watching Hallmark shows somehow physically changes the chemistry in his body to something I can only compare to how a monk must feel after hours of meditation.
He may not love that I am telling everyone his favorite holiday pastime (so please don’t give him a hard time!), but there is a really positive message around why he loves these shows, and I think it is worth sharing.
The first time I asked him why he loved these shows so much, he simply said with a smile “I do it because it’s a feel-good thing. There is always a positive message.”
It took me some time to get on board. The shows all looked the same and were predictable. I heard the shows in the background while cooking or online shopping or wrapping gifts and could pretty much tell you what was going to happen next. “Let me guess, her car is going to break down in this adorable small town and she’s never going back to the city.” “Oh look there happens to be a mistletoe right above them.”
But then something happened. I started to feel my own chemistry change when the shows were on. I would linger a little longer each time and eventually join him on the couch for the full-blown escape to the season’s nostalgic love stories.
Let me tell you why I think people love to watch Hallmark shows. It is because of the predictability in an unpredictable world. It is the wholesome escape … no violence, no swearing, and conflicts are resolved through calm communication that leaves me wanting to memorize every word they say. And there is emotional safe-
ty. You can watch with kids and grandparents and anyone in between.
In regards to the holidays, these shows evoke memories of simpler times, childhood Christmases, and old-fashioned values. The glamour of the big city vibe quickly changes to feelings of stress once you get sucked into the small town charm with names like Holly Ridge representing community, connection and a sense of belonging that so many of us crave, especially during the holidays. And the aesthetics are incredible, down to every last immaculately decorated balsam fir tree.
I can proudly say I now get sucked in (almost) as much as my husband and I love spending time with him and the low cognitive load. We can relax and enjoy without much mental effort. Just what we need this time of year.
If you start to feel stress this holiday, may values that emphasize community, kindness, family, and slowing down to appreciate the small things in life genuinely uplift your heart and spirit. And if you are having a hard time finding that peace, try turning on a Hallmark show. You just never know. Happiest of holidays my friends!

Effective Thursday, Jan. 1, the Broomfield DMV office will operate on a four-day schedule to decrease wait times for residents and increase operational efficiency. That schedule will be Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and closed on Friday.
As a growing community, there is an increasing demand for services, including through the DMV. This new schedule is a direct response to these operational challenges, helping create a more predictable and efficient environment for both customers and staff.
Even with extraordinary efforts to keep up with this growing demand, Motor Vehicle staff have been unable to keep up with the processing of requests including vehicle titles and loans, lien releases, and title transfers. Because of this, customers were experiencing extended wait times, occasionally extending to more than 45 minutes.
On Fridays, when the DMV will be closed to the public, Motor Vehicle staff will focus on processing so the majority of staff time on the other days can be used to ensure prompt service to residents needing in-person assistance.
• Streamlined Service: Friday will be used internally for paperwork and training, so your transactions move more efficiently during open hours. A new check-in process will include a Client Services Coordinator available for things such as verifying residency, directing residents to appropriate alternative resources when needed, and ensuring clients have all required paperwork before proceeding.
• Expert Assistance: Regular staff training means more knowledgeable service and fewer delays.
• Four Full Days of Focused Service: Concentrated hours mean staff can dedicate complete attention to customer service.

Broomfield residents can use the Colorado MV Express kiosk, located inside the Broomfield King Soopers at 12167 Sheridan Blvd.
Schedule ahead and experience the enhanced service model to make the most of your time. Visit Broomfield. org/MotorVehicle or call 303-464-5888. Walk-ins welcome, but appointments get priority service.
Even though Broomfield Motor Vehicle will be closed Fridays, you can DMV anywhere! Use the online services available 24/7 to renew vehicle registrations, driver’s license, ID card, update your address and more at DMV.Colorado.gov.
Broomfield residents can also use the Colorado MV Express kiosk, located inside the Broomfield King Soopers at 12167 Sheridan Blvd. The self-service kiosk is a fast, easy way to renew your registration and walk away with your tabs! When planning your visit in the new year to the Broomfield DMV, remember the hours will be Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Renewals and placard forms can still be placed in the secured utilities box and will be processed and mailed out the next business day. Last appointments and walkins will be taken at 4:30 p.m.
Visit Broomfield.org/MotorVehicle for more information.

• Use twine, cooking string, or fishing line
• Hang from a rack or shelf
• Create small bundles, only 4-7 stems
ith the season of gifting upon us, many of us are looking to give both meaningful and functional gifts. Handmade or homegrown gifts are a good solution to accomplish this as well as stay within a set gift giving budget. Hand poured candles, homemade soaps, and balms are popular options that can be made with cleaner ingredients that many of us seek. Healthier options for beauty routines, home decor, and fragrance are in high demand for good reason.
Growing and preserving our own food is no exception. As I mentioned in the October issue, last Christmas I received an Italian herb blend which was home grown, dried, and blended by a longtime friend of mine. I also shared that our garden renovation included a raised bed dedicated entirely to herbs. Specifically those that made up the treasured gift so I could recreate it.
Once the herbs were harvested, they were washed and laid out to dry. This took about a day, but using a salad spinner will expedite this step. Next I bundled each variety; basil, oregano, rosemary and thyme (Reminds me of a Simon & Garfunkel song -Scarborough Fair. Extra points if you know the year). I then tied each bundle made up of 4-7 stems and hung them from a tabletop banner stand I found on Amazon. Full drying took approximately 2 weeks. The herbs then easily crumbled by running my finger and thumb along the stems to release the dried leaves into a bowl. Next I ground the combined herbs in my mini blender before finally filling small glass jars with the aromatic mixture. I purchased the glass jar pictured from Dollar Tree along with the ribbon and greenery. Glass jars and embellishments are readily available just about anywhere. Once again, have fun and be creative!
These are gifts from the heartland hand. Hopefully each recipient will cherish the fragrant blend as much as we did last December and into 2025! The good news is most stores sell fresh organic herbs. Nothing says you must use home grown herbs if you've been inspired. Happy Holidays!

• Pick a location with good air flow and out of direct sunlight
• Hang in a paper bag
• Use a food dehydrator or drying rack
• Freeze drying
• Oven drying, low and slow at 180 degrees for 2-4 hours

For Ange Shores and her family, Bal Swan Children’s Center has been a cornerstone of love, learning, and community for nearly three decades. Their journey began in 1994, when their first daughter, Brittany, was born with a rare genetic disorder that left her with severe special needs. Like many new parents navigating unexpected challenges, the Shores family initially felt overwhelmed.
Everything changed when Bal Swan welcomed them with open arms. From the office staff to the teachers, therapists, and especially Marlene Politzer, the support and compassion were unwavering. Bal Swan did not just provide therapy or schooling; it taught the Shores family how to create an inclusive, enriched life for Brittany. Today, Brittany is 32 years old—a determined, strong woman who has far exceeded the expectations of her doctors, who once said she might not live past the age of three.
The family’s connection to Bal Swan did not end there. Brittany’s twin sisters, Hannah and Nicole, also graduated from the school, and the family still cherishes lifelong friendships formed during their time there. Beyond individual impact, Ange notes that Bal Swan shapes typical children as well, cultivating compassion and empathy through daily interactions with peers of diverse abilities.
Ange’s dedication to supporting families mirrors the values she saw at Bal Swan. She is a co-founder of Lil’ Friends in Broomfield, a nonprofit providing respite care and therapies for children with special needs, ages 3 to 18. Many Lil’ Friends families have strong connections to Bal Swan, and the school’s influence is evident in the programs and care Ange and her team provide.
Since opening its doors in 1963, Bal Swan has grown from a small school serving children with disabilities into an award winning, nationally recognized early childhood center. Today, children of all abilities learn together in a strengths-based environment where every child is seen, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential. Students develop essential life skills like empathy, leadership, and confidence that last far beyond the classroom.
The school is still operating in its original building, and the Building Belonging Campaign, an 18-million-dollar initiative to rebuild and modernize the 62-year-old campus, is underway. More than 2 million dollars has been raised, with an additional 3 million needed to unlock foundation support and break ground by summer 2027. This rebuild will create a new, modern learning center with in classroom sinks and bathrooms, central heating and air, and

thoughtfully designed spaces that promote calm, safety, and readiness to learn.
Colorado Gives Day on December 9 is the state’s biggest movement of giving, and early donations are live now. Every gift to Bal Swan helps build a community where every child, regardless of ability, learns they belong. For families like the Shores, it is deeply personal—the same school that nurtured Brittany and her sisters continues to empower the next generation of children to thrive.

For Ange and her family, Bal Swan is more than a school. It is a source of hope, guidance, and community. Its influence touches children, parents, and the broader community, nurturing compassion, celebrating differences, and fostering lifelong friendships. With the support of the community and initiatives like Colorado Gives Day and the Building Belonging Campaign, Bal Swan is ensuring that generations to come can experience the same transformative impact.

The holidays have a way of filling the air with magic, from twinkling lights to the scent of pine and the familiar strains of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. This December, that magic takes center stage once again as the Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD) presents its 2025 production of The Nutcracker, a beloved tradition reimagined with grace, authenticity, and global spirit.
Performances will light up the season December 11 through 14 at the Parsons Theatre in Northglenn and December 20 and 21 at the Pinnacle Event Center in Federal Heights. Under the direction of Executive and Artistic Director Sandra Shih Parks, CCD’s Nutcracker blends timeless beauty with fresh creativity, offering audiences a holiday experience that feels both familiar and brand new.
This year’s production continues CCD’s long-standing tradition of cultural authenticity, bringing Act II’s world of sweets to life through choreography inspired by Arabian, Chinese, Spanish, and Ukrainian folk dances. Each scene shimmers with thoughtful artistry, honoring the beauty and traditions of each culture while celebrating the universal joy of dance. The result is a Nutcracker that feels both classic and contemporary, connecting audiences across generations and cultures.
Joining CCD’s talented pre-professional dancers are guest artists from around the world, including performers from Taiwan Ballet Company, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and San Antonio Ballet. Their artistry elevates the production with breathtaking technique and heartfelt storytelling, reminding audiences why The Nutcracker remains one of the most cherished holiday experiences in the world.
“Our Nutcracker is more than a performance, it’s a celebration of local and global community,” says Parks. “We are thrilled to welcome international guest artists and share choreography that honors cultural authenticity while inspiring a new generation of dancers and audiences.”
The magic extends beyond the stage, reflecting CCD’s deep commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. On Friday, December 12, the company will host a special Sensory Friendly Performance at Parsons Theatre, designed especially for audience members with sensory sensitivities and their families. This thoughtful adaptation allows every audience member to experience the wonder of The Nutcracker in a supportive and welcoming environment.

“The magic of The Nutcracker lies in its ability to unite us,” adds Parks. “Whether you’re seeing it for the first time or the fiftieth, there’s something truly special about coming together through dance.”
Audiences can enjoy CCD’s Nutcracker during two enchanting weekends this December, beginning at Northglenn’s beautiful Parsons Theatre before moving to the Pinnacle Event Center in Federal Heights. Families attending in Northglenn can also take part in the sensory friendly performance, a cherished tradition for many who return year after year.
From the first snowfall of the overture to the glittering finale, CCD’s Nutcracker captures the joy, connection, and timeless beauty that make this ballet a treasured part of the season. It’s a performance sure to leave hearts glowing long after the final curtain falls.
Tickets are on sale now at ccdance.org/performances/ the-nutcracker.

Rocky Mountain Sports Club, located at 300 Nickel Street, Suite 4, in Broomfield, is more than just a workout studio. It is a place where health, personal growth, and community come together. Since opening in August 2022, owners Tim and Nina Sloan have created an environment where people of all fitness levels feel supported, challenged, and comfortable pursuing their goals.
The studio’s philosophy centers on a holistic approach to fitness. Rather than chasing quick results, the team at Rocky Mountain Sports Club encourages members to adopt fitness as a lifestyle grounded in balance. As they share on their website, sustainable health “isn’t about trends or extremes. It’s about rhythm, the ongoing balance between strength, recovery, and growth.”
Programs at the studio are designed for every kind of participant, from those just beginning their wellness journey to seasoned athletes. Offerings include small group training, yoga, self-defense, martial arts, nutrition guidance, and performance conditioning. Each program focuses on functional movement that builds strength, mobility, and endurance, while also helping members improve recovery and confidence.

What truly sets the club apart, however, is its strong sense of community. Many members describe feeling a genuine connection from the moment they walk in. One client shared that she “felt very welcomed there and left the

Another explained that “the instructors here really see you,” adding that she began nervously but quickly felt at ease and empowered after just a few sessions. These stories reflect the studio’s focus on personal relationships and its ability to make fitness both approachable and inspiring.
That welcoming spirit is intentional. As a veteran and woman owned business, Rocky Mountain Sports Club takes pride in cultivating an inclusive environment where beginners feel encouraged and experienced members stay motivated. Every instructor brings expertise and authenticity to their coaching, ensuring members receive personalized attention and steady progress.
Beyond physical training, the studio’s “Life on Rhythm” philosophy emphasizes long term wellness as a journey rather than a destination. Classes integrate movement, mindfulness, and recovery, teaching members to move better, recover faster, and carry their strength into everyday life. The result is a community that supports not only fitness goals but overall well-being.
Conveniently located at 300 Nickel Street, Suite 4, the studio offers Broomfield residents a space that is as friendly as it is effective. For anyone looking to improve health, gain strength, and find motivation alongside a supportive community, Rocky Mountain Sports Club offers the perfect combination of expert instruction, positive energy, and genuine care. Ilove tradition, and there is so much of it this time of year.
I especially love tradition around food and baking cookies.
My mom and I have been baking cookies with my kids since they could stand; teaching them to roll out dough, cutting cookies into shapes, and encouraging them not to fight over who gets to lick the spoon. The fact that we each value this time with them opens their hearts to hearing about our heritage and how the recipes hold deep memories for us.
Another beloved tradition I look forward to is the good old fashioned cookie exchange. This is where friends come together in community to show their creativity and generosity by sharing their time and special baked goods with one another. This small act of sharing says “you matter to me,” and everyone gets to go home with a box from everyone’s family history transformed into incredible sweet treats that warm your soul.
Here are a few treats that have been in my family longer than I have existed. They are simple and their recipes are always requested.

Ingredients:
• 1 cup butter
• 1 cup shortening
• 8 oz. cream cheese
• 2 cups sugar
• 1 egg, beaten
• 2 tsp. vanilla
• 4 cups flour
• 1 tsp. baking powder
• 1 tsp. salt
• Food coloring (optional)
Directions: Cream together with a stand mixer or hand mixer: butter,

shortening, cream cheese, and sugar.
Next add the beaten egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the wet mixture. If using food coloring, add at the very end until well blended.
You will need a spritz cookie maker. Load in the dough and dispense onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375°F for 8-10 minutes.
This next one is my husband Doug’s family tradition …
Ingredients:
Snickerdoodle Dough
• 2¾ cups allpurpose flour
• 2 tsp. cream of tartar
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• ½ tsp. salt
• 1 cup unsalted butter, just softened
• 1½ cups sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
• ⅓ cup sugar
• 2 Tbsp. cinnamon
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a stand mixer, cream together butter (barely softened) and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and blend well. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix well.
In a small bowl, combine ⅓ cup sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon.
Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out dough and roll it into a ball. Roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar mixture twice. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Let sit on the cookie sheet for a few additional minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool.

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet “insert name,” our goal is to introduce Broomfield area change-makers and highlight their contributions.
Our Broomfield caught up with the director of the Broomfield Veterans Museum, Peter Snyder. He has lived in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Virginia, and California. Peter has lived in Broomfield now for 24 years and has retired five times, he says.
Q: What did you enjoy most about your job?
A: My current job as director of the Broomfield Veterans Museum allows me to support and showcase veterans who have served in the U.S. Military, including those who served in the Civil War to more recent conflicts around the world.
Q: Tell us a little about your career path.
A: I played basketball in high school, then attended the University of Connecticut and played basketball there. I entered the US Navy via OCS (Officer Candidate School), serving in combat in Vietnam on
swift boats and later on destroyer type ships until my retirement. During my time in the Navy and after, I also worked 21 years as a football official. My wife and I moved to Broomfield and I became a partner in Kiosk Information Systems, a kiosk hardware manufacturer. I retired from Kiosk and went to work for the CIA in the Middle East. I’m now officially retired, but still enjoy supporting my community.
Q: What is it that you and your family enjoy during your free time?
A: No question, it is ocean and river cruising. My wife and I have completed 54 cruises, and we have visited 130 countries in the process. We typically cruise twice a year now.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?
A: My favorite restaurant is Northside Tavern and I enjoy most of the city parks.
Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?
A: The most interesting now-deceased person I’ve known in Broomfield was Vic Boccard, followed currently by Paul Derda. Worldwide, I enjoyed meeting and briefing President Reagan and Vice President Bush when I was stationed as a Naval Officer in the Pentagon in 1980, just after they were elected.
Q: What types of books do you enjoy?
A: I particularly like reading both fictional and non-fictional history of WWII from the American and German perspectives. In my travels I have visited many of the sites connected with WWII in Europe and the Western Pacific area.
Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?
A: I enjoy the fact that Broomfield is well run by the city government and is a very safe place to live and work.
Q: What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield?
A: If you’re currently living here, know how safe you are and just enjoy what the city offers. If relocating here, be sure to take part in service to others. I’ve enjoyed Rotary, being a CASA in the court system and now serving as a CCOB Election Judge and director of the Veterans Museum. Giving back is important.
