FROM THE

EDITOR OUR PETS

Last year in the Pet issue I wrote about how our dog Ollie had become my pandemic best friend. A year later he is nearly an appendage. I move. He moves. And our bond is stronger than ever. As I think about the possibility of leaving my home office to return to a more traditional workspace, I get a little stressed out about leaving him. But there are several local companies at the ready to help with pet solutions like dog day camp or dog walking that could help. If you need products or services for your pet, don’t miss our pet directory on pages 24-25. We had another great response to our Pet photo contest this year with hundreds of submissions! I wish we could run every awesome photo - but we just don’t have the space. In this issue you will see several of the front cover contenders sprinkled throughout our Pet Issue content. But congratulations go to Bailey, submitted by Sydney Cavalli, our front cover winner! What a gorgeous dog! Bailey and Sydney will receive a Gift Card Prize from some of our pet advertisers including Camp Bow Wow, Wag 'N Wash, and Willow Run.

Our Gratitude Late this summer, Our Broomfield™ was awarded the Small Business of the Year Award by the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce! We are beyond grateful and proud to receive this recognition. And as the largest circulation magazine in town, we are honored each month to bring great local news, events, and business connections to all of Broomfield. Of course, the magazine would not be what it is today without the amazing support of our community, advertisers, and staff. Thank you to the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and, most importantly, to the Broomfield community for embracing Our Broomfield in the last year!

Taste It Broomfield is returning on October 20. Taste It is one of Broomfield’s premier tasting and sampling events. Featuring samples from local restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and more, the event is an opportunity to highlight the hidden gems of our city. Vendor spaces and event tickets are all available now. Vendors can register for booth space through the Chamber of Commerce, with Chamber members getting free booth space at the event. THE LOVE OF A D G I love the Our Broomfield™ pet issue! When I was young, I thought that dogs were the only pet out there. I later realized that pets come in all shapes and sizes. We even had the pleasure of watching a hedgehog for a friend this summer. I had no idea that people own hedgehogs or that I could fall in love with listening to a hedgehog eat! I think back to the many pets I’ve had. Always a dog, and sometimes other things like fish, frogs, and rabbits. I felt connected to each one for different reasons, but there was always a connection. Perhaps it was caring for something that couldn’t take care of itself while in captivity. And with a dog, oh there are so many reasons to feel the love. You are their entire world. I’ve often spent time pondering the simplicity of the dog’s mind. Take the Labrador Retriever for instance. They run and play and chase rabbits and sometimes cause great frustration, but they are absolutely committed to pleasing us. I’ve always felt like that is their sole purpose in life. They are the ultimate companion, never complaining, always happy to see us. I’ve felt guilty on walks before, knowing that my dog laid around most of that day and is getting a 30-minute walk. That is 30 minutes out of the long day to have something fun to do. How would that feel to a human? We would go crazy and hold grudges. But their mind is so simple, they are just happy to be with you outside on a walk and they will be happy to go back inside afterwards to lay down by you for the rest of the day. That is the simple loving mind.

I will never forget losing my first lab Jack. I didn’t know I could feel such heartbreak. He was the only one in my life who had never hurt my feelings. He was always by my side. He didn’t care if I was crabby or forgot to feed him or didn’t walk him on a rainy day. He was always there looking at me with his big eyes, ready to be anything I needed him to be in that moment. Always full of affection and love. Someone once told me that a pet is the closest thing to having God in your life. The unwavering, unconditional love. That thought resonates with me. When I’m sad, I snuggle my dog. When I’m happy, I snuggle my dog. When I’m lonely, I snuggle my dog. He never has other plans or is too busy for me. He is the one constant in my life. When you have that reliable companionship, it’s easy to take it for granted. But once it is taken from you, oh the heartache can be unbearable. This month let’s try to quiet our minds to a simpler state of being. Instead of overthinking and making up negative stories in our minds that cause us all kinds of stress, let’s think like a dog and keep thoughts simple and happy. And snuggle your dog for reminding you every day that you are always loved.

FISH Prepares for Annual Fundraising Event: FALL FUNDRAISER “Embracing Hope” Thursday, October 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Partners Group, 1200 Entrepreneurial Dr., Broomfield This will be a hybrid event. Both online and in-person participation is offered. For more information, visit www.BroomfieldFish.org or call 303-645-1600. Register at FISH.bebids.me, or scan the QR code below. By Bette Erickson

If you’re ever been lucky enough to have a tête-à-tête with lifelong Broomfield resident Emily Crouse-Joo, be assured you’ll walk away feeling better than when you arrived. Ms. Crouse-Joo has remarkable influence, not only with her friends, but with strangers and the greater community. Chatting face-to-face with her is genuinely uplifting and inspiring. I recently spoke with the Community Engagement Specialist with FISH about the organization’s upcoming new fall fundraising event slated for October 7 at Broomfield’s Partners Group. She had just accepted the Non-Profit of the Year award on behalf of FISH from the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce at its Membership Gala. Broomfield FISH (Fellowship In Serving Humanity) has been a vital community resource serving the economically disadvantaged for nearly six decades. Ms. Crouse-Joo’s grandmother, the late Anne Crouse, was one of the co-founders of the important organization. Broomfield FISH meets our neighbors’ basic human needs and provides them with hope and tools to rise out of poverty. FISH is a nonprofit organization that provides food, emergency financial assistance, and one-on-one mentoring support to Broomfield residents in need. “I love my job,” exclaimed Ms. Crouse-Joo. “It’s like the best job ever.” Her colleague, Stacey Schmuck, Development Specialist with FISH, said that Ms. Crouse-Joo is perfect in the role of Community Engagement Specialist. “She knows so many people in Broomfield,” Ms. Schmuck said. The October 7 Embracing Hope fundraiser is one of the organization’s biggest fundraising events of the year, both women explained. FISH serves residents in Broomfield County living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, offering food, emergency financial assistance, referral services to more

than 30 partner organizations, and strengthsbased, whole family development pathways. The annual fundraiser supports many of these programs. This year’s goal of raising some $115,000 is within reach, Ms. Crouse-Joo said. “Broomfield always shows up.” The Embracing Hope event is something many in the community look forward to. Previously known as the elegant Harvest of Hope event at the Omni, because of COVID last fall, the organizers at FISH had to pivot to all virtual in 2020. “I’m thrilled – it’s a different approach this year,” explained Ms. Schmuck. Residents and business partners may attend virtually or in-person this year. “We heard our community’s desire to connect so we decided to change our event,” said Ms. Schmuck. “After being completely shut down for so long, we wanted to create an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate all the successes from the last year as well as plan and fundraise for next year.”

FRIENDS Ready for Annual Variety Show Fundraiser:

FRIENDS ROCKS By Missy Ruzicka

Who’s in need of a fun night out?

Even better, how about a unique fun night out that’s also a fundraiser? Well, you are in luck; our FRIENDS of Broomfield are hosting their 16th annual variety show, FRIENDS Rocks -Through the Decades in just a few weeks! This amazing “Journey” from the 50s to today’s rock bands will be premiering at the Alamo Draft House in Westminster on October 17 at 4:30 p.m.

FRIENDS ROCKS

EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES

FRIENDS is dedicated to enhancing communities by creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through an innovative and person centered approach. The annual variety show is just one way that the organization raises funds to support its core programs.

FRIENDS started their variety show back in 2006 with five participants, volunteers, and entertainers from the community. Since then, it has grown into a much-anticipated event where FRIENDS participants sing, dance, and have a blast showcasing their talents. Over the years they have enjoyed putting on many fantastic shows like; Tribute to Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Keeping it Reel (movie theme), and their favorite, The Greatest Showman, where the participants really connected to the show, but especially the empowering Oscar nominated song “This is Me.” 2020 proved challenging for everyone, but how do you put on a show during these unprecedented times that keeps everyone safe while not disappointing anyone? Just like school, work meetings, and family gatherings, they went virtual by recording the acts outside and then putting together an amazing show online. 2021 is still challenging, but putting on a rock concert for us to enjoy on the big screen is brilliant and unique! Unlike other rock concerts, guests of this show will be able to order their own dinners with drinks (sold separately) to provide a complete fun night out on the town! When first presented with this year’s theme, not all the participants were fans of rock music, thinking it was all heavy metal and screaming, but have since come to really enjoy the sounds of steel guitars and pounding drums. Music has definitely

18

changed since the 1950s and some friends are discovering that the music from the 80s is their favorite. FRIENDS Rocks Through the Decades will treat us with singing and dancing from the greats like; Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Bon Jovi, Guns & Roses, Queen, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, and Journey. This event is so much more than just a fundraising opportunity. The variety show has always been about the FRIENDS participants having fun and enjoying the spotlight as they share their talents as a way to thank the Broomfield community that has encouraged and supported them year after year. Whether preparing for a solo act, a group number or an instrumental piece, everyone from the participants to volunteers has a blast at rehearsals learning new songs and dances for the big show. What a great way to do something you love while making a little money for their social programs like Women’s, Men’s and FRIENDS’ Night Out, and Fun with FRIENDS activities. FRIENDS fundraising goal for this year is $10,000 through ticket sales and votes for best performances. Tickets are on sale now through their website at www.friendsofbroomfield.org for $25 per person. Special thanks to FRIENDS founder and CEO Gina Coufal for helping with this article.

Pet Therapy Provides Extra Dose of Comfort in Medical Settings

People and domesticated animals are drawn to each other. When we see someone with a cute puppy or a handsome, stately dog walking the trails or at the park, it can be difficult to resist approaching for a closer look and a pat on the head. And how else can you explain the popularity of cat videos? In the medical care setting, the human-animal bond can be a mutually beneficial relationship that improves the physical, social, and emotional lives of both the animal and the patient. The Avista pet therapy program exists just for this purpose.

About Avista Animal Helpers • •

• •

• •

• •

The program has provided therapy dog visits to patients and staff at Avista Hospital since 2011. Currently the program includes all types of breeds and mixes, small to large dogs. We are interested in dogs who love people, enjoy pets and hugs, don’t bark, and have good manners, especially in a hospital environment. Before being admitted to the program, each handler is required to pass a background screening and hospital orientation. Each dog must pass a series of evaluations, an annual veterinary health check, and be nationally certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs Our dogs are required to visit at least twice a month; some visit as often as once every week. Our yearly calendar showcases one of our therapy dogs each month, as well as pictures from our annual picnic. We sell calendars in the fall in the hospital lobby and gift shop as a fundraiser for our Therapy Dog Program. Our therapy dogs offer non-verbal, non-judgement acceptance. Our therapy dog teams are excited to be back at work to share their love and comfort with our staff and patients

The Avista staff has commented that it is great to see the therapy dogs especially on days that are busy and stressful. They make everyone smile and relax, at least for a few minutes. The patients love a dog visit. It makes them remember the dog they have at home, and provides a distraction and a bright spot in their day.

Physical benefits of therapy dog visits in the hospital: They can: • • • • • • • •

lower blood pressure improve cardiovascular health help release calming endorphins (oxytocin) help lower overall physical pain lift spirits and lessen depression provide comfort reduce anxiety help reduce overall loneliness

Willow Run Feed and Supply is your local resource for all things pet care, from food and toys to boarding and grooming. They have more than 30 years of experience, and have been serving the Broomfield community for just as long. As the needs of Broomfield’s residents changed from feeding rural farm animals to pampering suburban pets, Willow run adjusted to make sure local animals could always have the highest quality of care products.

S

hopping locally-owned businesses means that you and your neighbors will always have access to suppliers who know and understand your needs from a provider who cares. Rachel Carpentier, the General Manager of Willow Run, said “We are people who live and work in your community, so we are going to make sure you are taken care of.” Willow Run’s feed barn is sure to have anything you might need to keep your furry, scaly, or feathery friends full and happy. Whether it’s for dogs, cats, birds, chickens, rabbits, goats, or horses, they can help you find the right food for a balanced and nutritional diet. They like to say that they carry food for every type of animal, “from ants to zebras and earthworms to elephants.” If they don’t have what you are looking for, just ask! Rachel said, “We consider where ingredients are sourced from, and we try to stick with local and U.S. companies.” Willow Run also offers frequent buyer programs on certain brands of food, which can help you save money on the things you already need. Alongside their feed barn is the Willow Run Country Store, where you can find all sorts of treats and toys for your companion animals. They also have collars, leashes, beds, bowls, supplements, and grooming tools for your household pets and horses. If you are looking for holistic, natural, freeze dried, dehydrated, deli-fresh, or vegetarian food options, make sure to stop in the Country Store to see their impressive selection. neighbors because they truly are your fellow community members. When you shop a small business for your pet supplies, you are working with professionals who will get to know you personally and understand your pet’s lifestyle. They can help you perfect your pet care while you help them employ your neighbors and keep your money in Broomfield. Rachel believes Willow Run’s customer service stands apart because “we can really spend more time focusing on what your pet needs. And we will carry your food out for you!” She appreciates shopping locally because “you are keeping your taxes in your own city and county so you are benefiting from what you are spending.” And with their no questions asked satisfaction guarantee and returns you can be confident that they will do everything they can to help you find the right products for you and your pet. Carefully Considering

YOUR POTENTIAL PET By Megan Mayes

Bringing home a new pet is a big decision, one that should be made with a lot of thought and care for your preferences as well as for the well-being of the animal. Picking the right pet is crucial to the success of the relationship you build. By checking your own wants against the characteristics of your pet, you can avoid any disappointment or regret. Unfulfilled expectations are a common reason why people end up giving their pets away. Using this guide along with some personal reflections can help ensure you and your future pet will be happy together!

2

H

ow much time do you spend at home each day and how much time can you devote to pet care? Every pet’s needs are different, but all animals will need daily time for feeding and bonding at a minimum. Some animals also require daily cleaning or outdoor exercise. Evaluating your lifestyle and what you are able to offer can help you decide what kind of pet you are realistically able to support. To start with, what is your budget for a pet? Whether you purchase or adopt, you will most likely have to pay for your pet but also all of the care items they require. Beyond your initial investment, you will also need to be financially able to provide food, toys, comfort items, training, grooming, and health care on a regular basis. Make sure you account for your new pet in your weekly or monthly budget plan. What sort of relationship do you want with your pet? Are you looking for a snuggle buddy to keep you warm on the couch, or an adventure buddy who will travel and play? Are you looking for a particular species of fish or bird because you like their appearance? Whatever it may be, make sure the things you want are actually characteristics of the pet you choose. You should also consider the other relationships in your new pet’s life, such as children and other pets.

1

HERE ARE SOME COMMON PETS AND SOME OF THEIR SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS: Puppies and Dogs: Puppies are cute and fun, but they are a lot of work and require a lot of attention and time. Dogs are good for

families becаuse their personalities are already developed. Make sure you are okay with dog hair and accidents in the house. Your dog will need several hours of attention and exercise each day.

Kittens and Cats: Some cats are social and snuggly, some are more aloof or independent. No matter their personality, cats need daily attention, playtime, and petting to avoid boredom. You will need to accept a litter box in your home and potential wearand-tear caused by scratching. Adopting an older cat can help you get a feel for their individual personality. Hamsters, Gerbils, and Mice: Although many parents choose a small mammal as a pet for their children, it is often not a good

fit. These animals are often nocturnal, so they sleep during the day and play at night. They are also fast and agile, so they are not easy to hold. Although less conventional than hamsters, rats are actually social creatures that love human interaction. Thoroughly research your small mammal pet before you commit.

DOGGY DAY CARE provides GREAT SOCIALIZATION FOR YOUR PUP By Tori Ackroyd, Camp Bow Wow Marketing Coordinator

Camp Bow Wow is your local resource for trustworthy and reliable Doggy Day Care, Boarding, and Grooming. If your family recently gained a furry friend, endearingly coined as a “pandemic puppy,” but returning to work and school has reduced their play-time and daily attention, then you might consider doggy day care to fill and enrich their time.

28

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 2021

We recommend Doggy Day Care to pet parents who might not have the time they wish they had to take their dogs on long walks or out to play! Your dog has the chance to burn energy both physically and mentally. Day Care helps your pup learn socialization with other dogs and humans while you’re at work running errands, or traveling! We see lots of younger pet-parents whose dogs are their children and older folks whose kids might have grown up and left the house! We see every breed of dog, every shape and size, as well as all different ages! We’ve got puppies but we’ve also got some older dogs in their teens. Overall, Day Care is for dogs who enjoy being around other dogs, but as long as your dog is friendly you can always give it a try. Every pup is different, just like people are. We offer all kinds of activities here at Camp. There is daily enrichment in the yards and individually. Yard Enrichment is something every dog gets to experience every time they come in, but Individual Enrichment is something pet parents can request for an additional cost. We have indoor and outdoor yards, and when the weather is nice and warm the pups get to cool off and enjoy the pup pools! All of our Camp Counselors are Pet First Aid and CPR Certified! They undergo two weeks of hands-on training with another Counselor and get lots of experience before going into the Play Yards by themselves with the dogs! We have Camper Cams for the pet parents to watch their pups play all day! With this, comes a lot of concern from pet parents with the question, “Where is my dog? I don’t see them on camera.” Our dogs receive short 15–30-minute rest breaks throughout the day – this is very healthy for them. When humans go to an amusement park for the day, even though it’s lots of fun, we still take breaks for water, food and even just to sit. Day Care is the same for dogs! They need moments to themselves to breathe and get

some fresh water in a Cabin before going back to the Play Group. Well behaved dogs as well as dogs who might be struggling with behavioral issues that day all receive some time to themselves throughout the day! Camp Bow Wow is a great place for dogs with special needs such as daily medication requirements and separation anxieties. Your dog is never left alone, they are always around people or other dogs, so even our pups with separation anxiety tend to work through that and have a good time! We administer medications for no extra cost at Camp, as well.

Early Broomfield Benefitted by

Visionary Actors By Bette Erickson

Gumption, high spirits, and perseverance are some of the traits early Broomfielders made use of when creating our community. Theirs is a tale of vision and challenges.

N

o story of Broomfield’s early governance would be complete without mentioning my friend Lucy Brown. She was a gracious and ever-accommodating woman. After working hard to get Broomfield to incorporate, she was the city’s first paid employee, elected as city clerk in 1961, she held the position until her retirement in 1986. Both she and her husband, Murray (both now deceased) attended church with me at the United Church of Broomfield, and they were instrumental in working toward the creation of a unified City and County of Broomfield. The couple also donated to my first election to city council in 2001.

30

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 2021

Prior to incorporating in 1961, Broomfield was essentially run by the community Jaycees. While members of the Jaycees could not create and pass laws, they did hire a police officer and held fundraisers to pay his salary. They’re also credited with creating

He was a good man. You knew when George was in a room, but he always let others shine. He dedicated his efforts, not only to his family, but to ensuring Broomfield remained a strong and viable community. Broomfield’s first city council was established in 1961 and even today our city and county remains well-represented. As a successful home-rule city and county, we have proven through the previous decades, that we do not need the bloat and expense of separate, dedicated county commissioners. With a population of some 71,000+ residents, we are led by ten city council members with minimal county commissioner responsibilities, and Broomfield continues to be governed efficiently. Midway Park where they planted trees and then watered those trees with the community’s only fire truck. The Jaycees also worked as volunteer firefighters when fire emergencies occurred. Another friendly couple from my church were Ken and Virginia Hoyle. In the early 1960s Ken was the first president of Broomfield Bank. He was known as one of Broomfield’s most prominent businessmen – and he was modest and kind. He was a co-founder of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. There’s a memorial boulder dedicated to him at the shelter at Broomfield’s Outlook Park. Both he and Virginia are credited with creating (along with several others) the Bal Swan Children’s Center. Teamwork from prominent residents and community activists and not-so-prominent, behind the scenes individuals brought us to where we are today. And Broomfield is better for their vision and hard work. It was the early work of visionaries from members of the Lions Club, Jaycees, and Rotary Club - that was integral to Broomfield’s development. These organizations took donations and built schools and churches, and formed baseball and soccer teams. To be sure, our city is one that exemplifies fervent civic pride. Broomfield has and continues to take part in regional efforts as well as work that takes place locally in maintaining our infrastructure and keeping our service provision abilities on track as our city and county grows. No synopsis of Broomfield’s early days would be complete without mentioning another friend and mentor, the late George Di Ciero. He was such a forward-thinking and shrewd businessman, yet also known for his kindness. Our city hall is named for him. I met George when I served as co-chair of Broomfield’s Health and Human Services Advisory Committee back in 1999. Later, when I was first elected to city council, I asked him, “Why don’t you have an ego?” He laughed and replied, “That would just get in the way.” George worked as Broomfield’s city manager from 1968 to 2011, a remarkable 43 years of service. His efforts through all those years earned him national recognition and state and local accolades. In recognition and honor of his long and accomplished service as Broomfield’s city manager, the Broomfield Community Foundation established a college scholarship fund in his name.

Through hard work and cooperation, our residents, elected officials, and city and county staff have achieved many successes and laid the foundation for many more. Broomfield is our home today and our legacy tomorrow. Bette Erickson served on the Broomfield City Council from 2001-2009 and from 2015-2019, with her last two years as Mayor Pro Tem. Planning for Broomfield Town Square:

The New Heart of Broomfield By Jennifer Hoffman, City and County Manager

Artist renderings of the proposed Broomfield Town Square. Renderings courtesy of planning documents.

Thousands of resident comments, ideas, and input the past several years have made it clear that Broomfield is missing something: a community center that is unique, authentic, and welcoming to all. The Broomfield Town Square will fill this need and create an innovative, inclusive, and one-of-a-kind city center where visitors and residents will gather, linger, and discover for many years to come. While the City is supporting this privately led development, it will not result in any bond/debt assumption for Broomfield.

T

he Broomfield Town Square (BTS) development will be nestled south of Broomfield Civic Center, adjacent to the Broomfield Library. BTS is being developed by the Broomfield Town Square Alliance and scheduled to begin construction in late 2022. The future phases of the BTS project were presented to Broomfield City Council on Aug. 31, and include a mix of residential properties (townhomes, apartments, multifamily housing, and senior living), with creative and modern commercial spaces, and an enlarged lake. The plans show the former Safeway store, just north of W. 120th Avenue, reimagined as a Market Hall. An open air pedestrian walkway will create an outdoor feel as visitors explore local businesses, creative retail, unique restaurants, and also innovative office space. Entering from 120th, and continuing through the Broomfield Market Hall, patrons will discover community steps leading to the plaza and beyond. The plaza will incorporate an art walk experience playing off themes seen at Paseo Bandera in Santiago de Chile, but with its own local character. The BTS plaza will host various public art pieces; anticipated to be both innovative and eccentric. This curated collection will also feature local artists and is envisioned to be placed below, beside, and above guests - the Broomfield art

32

walk along the plaza is currently envisioned to be an immersive experience stretching from 120th Avenue straight through to First Avenue. As the art brings the area alive, a new waterfront, and historic landmark will ensure Broomfield Town Square is uniquely Broomfield. The expanded lake is a cornerstone in the overall project, as it ties all the components together by creating a unique and authentic place that can only be found in Broomfield. The return of the restored retro “Welcome to Broomfield”’ sign brings a bit of Broomfield’s past into this modern and innovative development. An interconnected and pedestrian-friendly network of streets, promenades, and trails will promote mobility and ensure accessibility for all users. With a curated mixture of local and unique retail, dining, and innovative workplaces, the Broomfield Town Square will create a community gathering space for all. Immersed within a beautiful lakeside setting alongside diverse housing options and business opportunities, BTS will be vivid and vibrant: the Heart of Broomfield. Keep informed about the progress of the Broomfield Town Square project by visiting the project website at BroomfieldVoice.com/BroomfieldTownSquare.

Frightening fun does not have to be frighteningly difficult! With some help from local party pros, you can celebrate Halloween in style.

Fun Services is your best local resource for Halloween costumes and decorations. Diamond Clarin, the store manager, gave us some insight into trending and classic costumes and this year’s easiest decorations for spooking trick-or-treaters. Some classic costumes for girls are princesses and witches. Boys are having fun as superheroes, ninjas, and zombies year after year. Diamond says that many young boys and girls are wanting to be Jedi, and Star Wars characters were the most popular costumes among all kids in recent years. It seems that trick-or-treaters are ready to fight off the Halloween frights! If you are looking for unique and high quality costumes, Fun Services is here to help! Their staff loves the fun and fright of Halloween, and they are here to make sure you are looking your best. Because Diamond knows how important it is to look good, but also avoid freezing noses and toes, she recommends sizing

up in costumes to leave room for warm layers or looking at some of their winter friendly costume options. She said, “Masks were actually our friends for costumes because they can easily be incorporated into a costume and keep your nose and mouth warm while you are out.” Your porch can’t be upstaged by the awesome costumes of your trick or treaters! Fun Services can help you decorate to scare or humor your Halloween visitors. They have an abundance of classic skeletons and the best quality spider webbing if you like simple and classic decor. Recently, Diamond has seen retro decorations rise from the grave, with more people looking for vintage Beetle Juice and Freddy Krueger options. Fun Services has a large variety of Halloween yard signs and decorations that are sure to make your home a Halloween hotspot. Visit Fun Services soon to get your Halloween necessities! Are you going to be hosting a Monster Mash or Thriller dance party? Or do you need something to keep you warm while the kids are out trick or treating? Mari Ann James, owner and operator, from The Park Wine and Spirits has some recommendations for creepy cocktails and delicious drinks that are sure to satisfy your spirit this Halloween. If you are looking for the perfect wine to pair with the chocolates you sneak out of your kids’ candy stash, Mari Ann says red wine is the way to go. Her pick, the Juggernaut Cabernet, is a jammy and full bodied choice that pairs well with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. For those who are looking for classic fall flavors, Mari Ann says you have to hurry in to get some pumpkin beers because they sell out fast! The Bird Dog salted caramel whiskey is another fall fan favorite at The Park. Witchy folks will love Mari Ann’s brew for Bloody Sangria: red wine, a splash of rum, lemon-lime soda, and sliced fruit. This will be a crowdpleaser at your Halloween party! Visit Mari Ann at The Park Wine and Spirits to find everything you need to stir up some fun this fall.

FLAVORS OF FALL

Baked Pumpkin Donuts WITH VANILLA GLA ZE

By Lisa Payne

Who’s in the mood for pumpkin everything? Me! I was a little shocked when the Pumpkin Spice Latte was back in the stores in August … that seemed a bit early. But it’s October now and we are all in. I hope you enjoy this recipe that my family loves from The New York Times Cooking website. Perhaps you can dunk these right into your PSL.

Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS For the Donuts: • Nonstick cooking spray

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 1 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour

• ½ cup vegetable oil

• 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

• 2 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• 1 cup canned pumpkin purée

• ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

• ¼ cup whole milk

• ¼ teaspoon baking soda

For the Glaze: • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus more if needed • 2 tablespoons whole milk, plus more if needed • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

PREPARATION 1. Place a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 375 degrees. Coat 2 (6-cavity) doughnut pans with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Make the doughnuts: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and baking soda.

3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the sugar and oil. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and whisk until the mixture is thick and yellow, 1 to 2 minutes. Whisk in the pumpkin purée until smooth and combined. 4. Sift half the dry ingredients into the wet and stir until just combined. Add the milk and stir to combine. Sift in the remaining dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

IN BROOMFIELD

5. Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to pour batter into each doughnut cavity. Bake until the doughnuts are browned, separating from the edges of the pan, and springy when touched, 15 to 20 minutes. 6. Remove the pans from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Remove the doughnuts from the pans and allow to cool completely for about 30 minutes. 7. As the doughnuts cool, make the glaze: In a medium bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, and whisk to combine until desired consistency. The glaze should drip slowly, not run down the sides of the doughnut; add more milk if needed to thin it or more confectioners’ sugar if needed to thicken it. Working one at a time, dip the top half of each cooled doughnut into the vanilla glaze. Serve immediately, or let cool completely, then store in an airtight container in a single layer for up to 3 days.

SET TO DELIGHT AUDIENCES WITH FALL PRODUCTION

Pirates of Penzance By Bette Erickson

Mary Wilkie feels strongly about the Broomfield community. “My dad grew up here,” she said. “I bought the house he grew up in.” She attended elementary through high school here and recognizes the potential in this community. “It’s changed a lot but I’m excited to see the growth and see how we are able to honor our history while embracing change and welcoming all the new faces and stories that enrich our community as it grows.”

38

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 2021

The Executive Director for BackStory Theatre, Ms. Wilkie started teaching with the organization in 2012 and brought it back from the brink of shutting down in 2015. “All these years later, people in our community still remember that time and tell me how happy they are that we’re still around,” she said. I had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Wilkie about Backstory Theatre’s fall production, ‘Pirates of Penzance’ recently. “Our version of ‘Pirates of Penzance’ by Gilbert & Sullivan will be somewhat abridged and the music will be updated with a modern, rock feel and live musicians,” she said. “The costuming is fantastic think 1980s glam rock meets steampunk - With references like Prince, Michael Jackson, Cindi Lauper, and Madonna.” When I finished the interview, I added the performance to my calendar. Ms. Wilkie currently serves as Chair of Broomfield’s Public Art Committee and works with the Communities that Care Coalition. During the COVID pandemic, she worked at FISH for 15 months with the participant services team, first as an intake specialist helping with the outdoor food distribution and then with case review of rental assistance payments. “That experience has helped me learn more about my neighbors - their gifts and their needs. And it’s helped me see some of the ways BackStory Theatre can get creative about overcoming obstacles to participation for those on limited income or who speak English as their second language.” BackStory Theatre is more than just a production company. She is proud of working with an organization that has a, “focus on being inclusive, finding ways to overcome barriers to access, and collaborate with our community partners to bring over 100 hours of free engagement to the community each year,” added Ms. Wilkie. For more information, visit www.backstorytheatre.org or email info@backstorytheatre@gmail.com.

BROOMFIELD SENIOR SERVICES 2021

LIVING IN BALANCE FAIR FOCUSES ON TECHNOLOGY By Missy Ruzicka

2020 proved to be a challenging year in more ways than we can count, but one of those was the importance of technology and how it has been a wonderful, if not sometimes frustrating, tool. From keeping in touch with family to using QR codes for menus at a restaurant, it seems everyone is using technology in one way or another. With evolving times, technology can seem overwhelming, but this year’s Resource Fair - Living in Balance, sponsored by Broomfield Senior Services, is here to make the shift to using everyday technology easier. With this year’s theme the goal is: To educate, inspire, and empower seniors to use technology in ways that make their lives easier and safer. The event will be held at the new Broomfield Community Center and will provide some of our community members with a first chance to get a look around the new facility. There will be 50 vendors from various organizations there to help visitors find valuable information on everything from healthcare to housing and also including legal and financial resources. The library will be set up in a corner of the gym with an exhibit they are calling the Tech Petting Zoo, giving guests a chance to bring any tech device they might need some assistance with, for training and help. Attendees will also have a chance to win an Ipad or chromebook! Along with the vendors there will also be several 45-minute breakout sessions

on a variety of topics. Senior Planet is presenting a session on smartphones; why they are so popular, what you can do with them, and a comparison of the two most popular operating systems. The Colorado Bureau of Investigations will be leading a breakout session on safety. Young and old alike have heard how dangerous online predators can be, from trying to steal your money to stealing your identity. CBI will be teaching the basics of staying safe online along with simple tricks and tactics to outsmart the bad guys. This year’s keynote speaker will be Kari Knutson, a Colorado native and engaging speaker who will speak about thriving through change with a little tech twisted into it. In March 2020, everyone’s world came to a screeching halt with the arrival of the pandemic and we have been living in unprecedented times ever since. Kari’s presentation will examine the process of change and will discuss how to use humor and heart to thrive through all these changes we are facing. She will also discuss the importance of perspective, the role of courage, and the power of compassion. Guests will leave feeling empowered and ready for any changes in the path ahead. The Living in Balance Resource Fair will be October 15, at the Broomfield Community Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost of admission is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents and includes breakfast and lunch.
