Broomfield FISH Prepares for Holiday Outreach Activities

Did you know that more than 50% of the people that FISH serves in our Broomfield community are children under the age of 18? This is a statistic that Broomfield FISH, our local family resource center that provides food, emergency financial assistance, and one on one mentoring to our economically disadvantaged residents, recently shared with me.

EDITOR FROM THE Our Thankfulness

I recently ran into an old friend who I had not seen in several years, and in the course of catching up, he noted that it “looked” like things were going very well for me; an assertion that he came to from observing my various updates and sharings on social media. Though social media provides a notoriously “rosy” view, I didn’t hesitate one second to respond. I said, “You know, I wake up thankful every day.”

And it’s true. Sure, life often delivers challenges, aggravations, and nuisances - some bigger and more impactful than others. And call it simple, but despite the bumps, I have all the “things.” My health, my family, my livelihood, my friends, my faith. I have enough. I have MORE than enough. And I am thankful. I strive to be thankful every day.

Our cover story this month is about one of the Broomfield organizations nearest and dearest to my heart. I love that Broomfield FISH was created in the early years of Broomfield by a group of women from several local churches coming together to share what they had that was good and make Broomfield a better place for their neighbors in need. It is how FISH started and it is the foundation of FISH that remains today.

In October, several hundred members of the community gathered for FISH’s annual fundraising luncheon, Embracing Hope. It was a beautiful day! The generosity, thankfulness, and gratitude that filled the room was overwhelming. In our cover story you can learn how to help FISH throughout the holiday season.

Broomfield is a special place because of FISH and dozens of other organizations and the hundreds of community members who volunteer, donate, and support those groups in the spirit of gratitude, sharing, and caring, making our community better for all. This spirit is one of my personal motivations for starting and running this magazine. Each month we aim to provide visibility and outreach for Broomfield’s critical nonprofit community. Hopefully we have helped you learn about a group that might help you, or that you are inspired to support.

The “Season” is definitely upon us. Wishing you the spirit of gratitude throughout.

INSPIRATION FOR

WHY GRATITUDE BRINGS HAPPINESS

The holiday season always seems to come with high expectations for cozy, festive experiences. Perfect meals, perfect gifts, perfect company. But in reality, the holidays can be stressful and sad for so many people for so many different reasons. Fortunately, something that can help lift your spirits is built right into our Thanksgiving holiday – being grateful.

Gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them feel happier. It helps refocus on what you have versus what you lack. At first this practice may feel contrived, but with practice and use, our mental state grows stronger.

Last week I was having one of those weeks where my whole focus was that my kids are growing up too fast. I was missing my toddlers and feeling sad that my four now prefer friends and their phones to hanging with mom. No one tells you that this seems to happen overnight! I was starting to slip into a negative spiral over it. But then a beautiful moment happened at school drop off.

A perfect stranger came up to my car after my three middle schoolers got out. She told me that I must be doing something right because she watched all three of my kids come around to my side of the car and hug and kiss me goodbye and say I love you right in front of all of their friends. She said she now drops off grandkids and watches families rush in and out and doesn’t see the pause for connection very often and that I should feel proud my kids take the time. Wow.

After she drove away, I shed a few tears of gratitude. I was so thankful that she took the time to say those words to me. Her ten seconds of acknowledgement changed my perspective. I know that I get to have that exchange with my kids every day, but I wasn’t feeling grateful for it. I was taking it for granted and feeling sorry for myself that they prefer friends and Snapchat. But guess what? It’s normal behavior for them to want those things AND they still love me and show me every single day. I spent the rest of the

day feeling grateful for that stranger and grateful for this next phase of life with my children.

Let’s look for what we already have. Pause long enough to notice. Name three things to be grateful for every morning when you wake up. And when you notice someone else doing something right, take the time to tell them. Even if it’s a stranger. You never know how they are feeling on the inside, and your words could brighten their day.

I recently saw a quote about the fall season that said “The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go.” May we all find something to let go of this season and fill the space with gratitude for what we already have.

Volunteers MAKE AN IMPACT EVERY DAY

Hundreds Across the City and County of Broomfield Deserve Thanks

Broomfield would be unrecognizable without volunteers. People volunteer for myriad reasons: the deep need to give back to the community, a desire to become more involved or even an interest in learning new skills. And volunteer efforts ensure residents have access to well-loved programs and services.

In the last year, more than 900 individuals volunteered more than 30,000 hours with City and County of Broomfield programs. So what does 30,000 hours mean in real-world impact?

For seniors, volunteers mean access to nutritious meals. At the Lakeshore Cafe, volunteers serve more than 8,800 daily meals to seniors annually and provide engaging conversation with attendees. Meals on Wheels volunteers hand deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors who otherwise couldn’t prepare meals for themselves. Since the start of 2022, more than 26,000 meals have been delivered to 138 seniors in Broomfield.

For the youth in Broomfield, volunteer coaches create the opportunity for young athletes to develop sports-specific fundamentals while also growing life skills such as friendship, cooperation, teamwork, leadership, and communication. Because of their efforts, 2,338 youth were able to participate on 172 youth sports teams in 2022.

Volunteers increase the number of positive wildlife interactions in Broomfield through community education. Nature Program volunteers offer educational classes for children to teach them how to interact with nature. Eagle Watch volunteers monitor eagle nests and provide important data to understand the successes and failures of eagle breeding in Broomfield. Since January, Wildlife Masters have contributed more than 100 hours to in-person outreach events and responded to 57 calls on the Wildlife Master hotline.

If you’ve ever been to the Broomfield Library, you’ve felt the impact of community volunteers. At the Library, more than

120 volunteers have spent the last year shelving books, tutoring students, delivering books to homebound residents, and more. Many share the qualities of compassion, integrity, respect, and selfless service that help make the Library a welcoming community space.

At the History Collections, volunteers preserve Broomfield’s history. In 2022, volunteers cataloged nearly 900 historic items made publicly available in an online database. Volunteers also give tours of the Broomfield Depot Museum. For many young volunteers, this is their first time actively engaging with local history, something they truly enjoyed.

Volunteers help keep the community safe. With a growing population and increased crime caseload, investigations volunteers at the Broomfield Police Department assist with more than 100 cases each year to ensure cases are successfully closed in a timely manner. Volunteers have expanded the hours for fingerprinting services available to the Broomfield community, fingerprinting 423 people living or working in Broomfield since January.

Through the Victim Advocates program, volunteers provide 24/7, on-scene crisis intervention and assistance for persons affected by trauma as well as follow up support, resources, and referrals. Since January, Victim Advocates provided 7,933 services to 1,060 individuals.

From victim support to delivering meals to seniors, volunteers give back every day. Their service, compassion, and humility make Broomfield a more resilient community and wonderful place to live. December 5 is International Volunteer Day; don’t forget to say thank you to a volunteer!

Program Brings Snow Shoveling, Yard Work to Residents in Need

For Broomfield residents who may need a helping hand with shoveling in the winter or yard work in the summer, the Broomfield Pals program has a solution.

The Broomfield Pals program was born during COVID-19 to serve seniors, especially those who were disproportionately isolated during the pandemic, said Melanie Ferraro, Broomfield’s community engagement specialist. The program quickly morphed into yard work and snow shoveling support, which were unmet needs in Broomfield at the time.

The Snow Pals program is entering its third season after it was launched two years ago for the ‘20-’21 winter season. While the program is geared toward seniors and individuals with disabilities, it is open to anyone who is physically unable to complete snow shoveling and yard chores at their homes.

Ferraro said the Broomfield Pals program is growing rapidly. This year, it received 65 applications for snow shoveling support, up from 52 last year and more than double the year before. Yard Pals volunteers provided 16 residents with regular yard work support, and ten residents with one-time, special project support.

“Last year, 28 volunteers provided snow shoveling assistance, many of whom shoveled for multiple Pals,” said Ferarro. “A couple of volunteers went above and beyond by shoveling for four Pals every snowfall! About 14 volunteers helped with Yard Pals this summer.”

The program needs more volunteers to meet the growing demand within Broomfield and is actively recruiting Snow Pals volunteers for this winter. To sign up and learn more, visit Broomfield.org/BroomfieldPals

Snow Pals Volunteers are asked to stay in touch with their Pal throughout the winter and shovel their Pal’s walkways by noon of the day following the last snowfall, in compliance with Broomfield Municipal Code. The time commitment varies depending on how many Pals a volunteer decides to support and how often it snows. For both Yard and Snow Pals, there isn’t a strict age limit for volunteers. Ferraro said a number of families volunteer together as parents teach their kids the importance of giving back.

Yard Pals volunteers have a more flexible schedule with the option of matching with a Pal to provide regular yard work support in the summer (typically 1-2 times per month) or volunteering with one-time, special projects as they arise. Schedules are determined with their Pal. Common requests for support include lawn mowing, weeding, trimming, and leaf raking.

Once a match is made, volunteers give their Pals a call to introduce themselves and determine how they’d like to stay in contact moving forward. In some cases, this means the Pal calls the volunteer when they need assistance. In other cases, they set up a regular schedule or the volunteer just drops by every time it snows.

“Broomfield Pals builds connections between neighbors and creates a more resilient community,” said Ferraro. “For many, the impact goes far beyond helping folks remain compliant with municipal code. It ensures people are cared for. When it comes to snow removal, a shoveled walkway allows residents to safely enter and exit their homes to attend medical appointments, shop for groceries, and more.”

Broomfield Veterans Museum to Host Veterans Day Ceremony

The nation has observed Veterans Day since November 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day and called for Americans to reflect “with solemn pride on the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.”

Founded in 2002 by six late Broomfield-area World War II veterans, the museum honors local veterans of all U.S. conflicts and peacekeeping efforts, from the Civil War to the present, from all branches of service. The museum houses nine rooms of exhibits, a library with more than 2,500 history/military books and hundreds of archived videos of veteran interviews, and a multimedia room that seats over 40. The museum is free and open to the public and offers docent-guided or self-guided tours, and, twice a month, a presentation called Coffee and Conversation with stories from local veterans and historians.

This month’s scheduled speakers include Marv Truhe on November 12. Truhe served as a U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer and military judge during the Vietnam War. In October 1972, simmering racial tensions sparked several hours of violent confrontations aboard the attack carrier USS Kitty Hawk while it was engaged in air strike operations off the coast of North Vietnam. He defended six of the Kitty Hawk defendants at their special court-martial trials. Although numerous Black soldiers were assaulted by white sailors and marines, not a single white crew member was charged. The details of the story are included in Truhe’s forthcoming book, “Against All Tides – The Untold Story of the USS Kitty Hawk Race Riot.”

On November 26, Mike Fellows, who served with combat engineer units in Vietnam and Germany, is scheduled to lead a Coffee and Conversation talk titled “The Damned Engineers,” which is the story of the critical role that combat engineers played in frustrating the advance of German forces during the early days of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

The Broomfield Veterans Museum will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Open House this month to honor and remember all veterans. The program begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11, in front of the museum at 12 Garden Center off of Midway. The ceremony will include music, an invocation, a keynote speaker, presentation of Color Guard, a gun salute, and Taps. Following the ceremony, there will be an open house at the museum.

As the holidays are upon us, let us think of these children and families who so badly want to have something as simple as a traditional Thanksgiving meal or even one gift under the tree for their kids. Luckily there are so many ways that YOU, our generous and caring Broomfield community, can help.

FISH is busy all year long helping our community, but during the holidays they especially need the support and

generosity of Broomfield families and friends. Last year in November and December combined they had almost 7,000 visits to their cost-free, self-shop marketplace and gave out more than 141,000 pounds of food in November alone! During the holidays they provide clients with the experience of shopping with their kids and cooking a traditional meal together when some families otherwise could not afford to do so.

Fresh Flavors for Thanksgiving

One of my best friends and I have a tradition where she sits and drinks champagne while I make all of my Thanksgiving pies. The first year we did this I remember thinking that none of my pies were going to turn out because we were talking so much. I also remember thinking that I would not have cared because we had so much fun!

Another tradition is that I make her family a chocolate pie for their Thanksgiving meal. Of all the pies I make (pumpkin, apple, cherry, custard, and chocolate), this is the pie that my kids prefer the most, with custard a close runner up. (Okay fine, I buy my pumpkin pie from Costco. Can’t beat the taste or price!)

My grandmother used to make a chocolate pie but used a box of chocolate pudding mix. As a child I loved it and you can also do that here. But first, try the homemade pudding in this recipe, it is delectable.

I hope your family enjoys these pies as much as ours does!

Instructions:

• 1 homemade or store-bought pie crust, freshly baked

• 3 eggs

• ¾ cup sugar

• ¼ tsp. salt

• ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

• 1 tsp. vanilla

• 2 ½ cups hot whole milk or

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. In a medium bowl, beat eggs slightly with wire whisk. Add sugar, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla, and mix well. Very gradually blend hot milk into the egg mixture. Go very slowly so the eggs don’t curdle. Pour filling into hot pie crust.

2. Cover edge of pie crust with shield ring or foil to prevent excessive browning. Bake 25-30 minutes total. Remove shield or foil during last 15 minutes of baking time. The pie is done when a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

3. Cool on cooling rack for 1 hour. Serve slightly warm or cold from fridge. Store in the refrigerator.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 202226

Instructions:

1. Combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a medium saucepan. Stir or whisk together.

2. Pour in milk and egg yolks and whisk together.

3. Stir over medium heat until the mixture just barely comes to a boil and becomes thick, about 6-8 minutes. Be sure and watch the whole time, sometimes it takes less or more time. The second it starts to bubble and thicken (consistency of pudding) remove it from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate, vanilla and butter, and stir until everything is combined.

4. Pour the pudding into the pie crust and place it in the fridge to chill for four hours, uncovered. If there is extra pudding, pour into small dishes to serve later.

Serve each slice of delicious chocolate pie with a mound of whipped cream!

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy these unique flavors

Wanted: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy

Last Seen: Loitering in Sinks and Drains

Wanted for: Causing Sewer Overflows and Back-ups

BEWARE OF THE GREASE GOBLIN

• Never pour grease down sinks, drains or into toilets.

• Grease can clog pipes and cause sewer overflows and back-ups into basements, yards, and storm drains.

• Grease overflows and back-ups pose potential health risks and environmental problems that can be costly to clean up.

SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN

• Once cooled, pour cooking oils and grease into a nonrecyclable container. Add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container and place in the tr ash.

• Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines.

• Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin.

• Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines.

• Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.

MORE SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN

• Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors.

• Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336.

• Start a compost pile at your home with food scraps that are not meat.

Help keep the Grease Goblin out of your drains and in the hands of the proper authorities!

WOMEN’S

PROGRAMSELFWOMEN’SDEFENSE PROGRAMSELFWOMEN’SDEFENSE PROGRAM

We are lucky to live in a town that many of us grew up in and feel safe in and rarely worry about violent crimes happening in Broomfield. Unfortunately, there are those who will take advantage of our quiet town and those of us who call it home. Broomfield’s current crime rates are not the worst we have seen, but 2021 did see an increase in violent crimes against women and so our Broomfield Police Department (BPD) wants to empower its female citizens by offering women’s self-defense classes.

One in three women will find themselves a victim of physical or sexual violence at some point and our BPD is often involved after the fact, but they want to help women take safety into their own hands and hopefully avoid violent situations altogether. The new program to meet

this need is fittingly called Her Own Hero, it consists of two classes taught by hand-picked, trauma-informed members of BPD, who have seen first-hand the effects of violence against women and are committed to helping empower the women of the community.

The first class is a Basic class which runs three hours in a lecture style setting that covers safety essentials like boundaries, individual mindset, assertiveness, and situational awareness. Women will learn simple but effective safety techniques that are vital, life saving

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 202232

skills for their safety “toolbox” and that will be used in the second class. The basic class is a prerequisite for the Advanced class where women will take the “toolbox” they learned in the basic class and put lessons to the test as they “fight” their way through specific situations. In this intensive five-hour class, participants will be taken on a whole new level of empowerment making risk assessments during drills and then determining the best course of action to take.

The remaining classes for 2022 are currently overbooked and have waiting lists, but Jaime Hobbs, from BPD did go over some important principles of safety for those of us who have not previously had an opportunity to take female self defense training. Hobbs has been teaching women’s safety and self-defense classes since 2012 and she said a main thing is to listen to your “intuition” or “gut-feeling.”

“Do not discount it!” she said. “Often, if you feel something is ‘off,’ it’s because it is!” Have situational awareness, such as don’t walk through a parking lot playing on your phone. Know where you are and where you are going, by making sure you know addresses, landmarks, and street names. In the back of your mind think about “what if” situations and what would you do if faced with danger. It’s not to make you paranoid, it is to keep you one step ahead should a horrible situation arise.

Broomfield Police Chief Enea Hempelmann approved the program and truly sees the value and importance of educating and empowering our community. Even though the remaining four classes for the 2022 year are booked with waiting lists, keep your eye on BPD social media pages for new 2023 classes to be announced.

Diabetes UpdatePlanning is Key to Managing Holiday Eating

The holidays are a joyous time to celebrate with family and friends. But, if you have diabetes, this time of year can also be stressful because there is such a large focus on food. The team over at Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital want to share ways to keep balance between your blood sugar and those traditional holiday feasts.

With diabetes, it is important that you do not skip meals or snacks to ‘save up’ for the big feast. By the time you get to your big family meal you will be extra hungry and more likely to overeat making your blood sugar harder to manage. If you know your family is planning on eating at a different time than you regularly eat, you can volunteer to bring a healthy appetizer so you have a snack at your regular eating time, keeping your blood sugar steady while you wait for the main event.

Enjoy this time with family and friends but know you need to keep a balance and plan out your celebrations. If your Aunt Linda makes the best pumpkin pie and it is your absolute favorite, remember that indulgence at meal time and take a smaller serving of potatoes or skip the rolls so you can have a little slice of that pumpkin happiness. Aim for balance and avoid excess. Keep on eye on your blood sugar, know your body, and keep an eye out for symptoms of low blood sugar.

After that delicious meal, ask your family to join you for a walk. Exercise is a great way to get everyone moving and take a break away from all those sweet treats back at grandma’s house. It can help make up for over indulging, reduces stress, and exercise is also a great way to help lower blood sugar.

When it comes to drinks, try to stick to calorie free drinks such as water, tea, seltzers, or diet sodas over sugary mixed drinks. If you are going to have some alcoholic drinks, make sure it’s not on an empty stomach. Alcohol effects blood sugar differently for everyone so make sure you check your blood sugar a few times during your family gathering so you know when to adjust.

The American Diabetes Association says, “The most important thing about managing your diabetes during the holidays is to plan ahead.” Know the general plan for the family, what time food is being served, what is on the menu, and most importantly what can you bring! Holidays are some of the happiest times of the year, and if you practice these strategies, managing your diabetes does not have to take away from the joyous celebrations.

If you find yourself with questions about balancing your diabetes and your holiday traditions, please reach out to the clinical dietitians over at Avista by calling 303-673-1081. Another great resource for Diabetics is the American Diabetes Association website: diabetes.org

Wishing you a happy holiday season from all of us at Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital!
