The purpose of this magazine is clearly stated in its name. It is a publication about all things Broomfield. The people, places, events, organizations, and businesses of Broomfield. And it is also an important vehicle for delivering critical resident-focused information from the City and County of Broomfield.
Since the early days of this magazine, we have been proud to partner on advertising and content with the City and County. But beginning this month, I am thrilled to announce an expanded partnership between the two organizations.Going forward we will be providing at least two pages of City and County content in each issue to ensure that residents receive the most important local updates direct from the City month in and month out. In this issue, that content includes details about Conserving Water on page 16 and full details on the City and County’s Spring Clean Up Program on page 46.
When we expanded our agreement, City Manager Jennifer Hoffman and I had a great conversation about the importance of reaching our senior community with the print edition of Our Broomfield magazine. And so, through the arrangement we will now be dropping copies of Our Broomfield at several local Senior Living Facilities in town each month. I am so excited to be able to do this!
It seems appropriate to be making this announcement in the Home Improvement Issue. Whenever I travel to another City, I like to take in the local residential communities and observe the architectural styles and community structures and imagine living there. But no matter how beautiful or amazing the homes, the question always comes back to place. I am not extremely well traveled but I have yet to visit a place that would make me want to pack up and leave Broomfield. And that is about the house that I live in, the neighborhood where it sits, and the City that surrounds it.
Our Home Improvement Guide begins on page 26. If you have home maintenance or improvement on your mind this Spring, this is the issue for you! Please tell the provider you found out about them in Our Broomfield Magazine.
Thank you to the City and County of Broomfield for trusting us as a local information partner! And thank YOU for reading,

The topic is complex, but to address some of it, the organizers are convening a panel of three individuals, who can speak directly to the immigration experience: Nicki Battista (daughter of Italian immigrants), Gena Valdez (nurse, originally from Mexico); Dr. Mirwais Baheej (physician, originally from Afghanistan). The moderator of this panel discussion is Tina Eichner, the owner and publisher of Our Broomfield magazine and the granddaughter of Italian immigrants. We hope to see you there!

Most of you may have heard of the “Let Them” Theory by Mel Robbins. Her podcasts and snippets on Instagram give so much wisdom that if you haven’t read her book, there are other places to learn in a much shorter time. At its core, the “Let Them” philosophy is about mindful detachment from things beyond your control. It’s not about indifference, but rather making conscious choices regarding where to invest your emotional resources. It is a simple approach to reclaiming your inner peace and focusing on what truly deserves your attention. It’s easy to spend your energy trying to get people to see things your way. The best way to save, the best way to communicate, the best way to load the dishwasher, the best way to parent. Our way is always the best way right? Not really. And when we spend our lives trying to get other people to change to how we want them to be, we end up with a disconnect so deep it can be hard to get it back.
Both sides get to use this theory. The principle is simple: let people be who they are. Let them say what they want. Let them not include you. And let ME take back the power by deciding how to react or move forward. It’s realizing that other people’s behavior reflects their own struggles or experiences rather than personal attacks against you. It’s hard work but once you can get to this place of detaching from the countless daily irritations, a natural empathy grows towards others.
Here is an example of a situation that could come up for you or even your kids and how to handle it. You are scrolling on social media and see your friends have all gone out together and didn’t invite you. The hurt is real. And you try not to let it bother you but it does. You start making up stories in your head of why they didn’t they invite you and what you did wrong. Rejection, insecurity, and hurt sets in.
The let them theory incorporates taking your power back by first, feeling those feelings, and then saying let them. Let them make their plans and do whatever they are going to do.
Let them get together five nights a week if they want. Let them post pictures of their fun night. You can’t dictate how everyone lives their life. Maybe they had a special reason for this night out. Maybe it completely slipped their mind to not include you. Maybe they wanted a smaller group. Let them. They have every right to do whatever they are doing and they don’t have to include you.
Now the let ME part is where you take your power back and not get sucked into the hurt. Maybe you realize you haven’t been making any effort with this group. Maybe you realize you are always too busy and have said no one too many times. The list could go on and on. You can choose to start making more effort going forward, or even invite them to do something next. Or maybe you decide you don’t really enjoy being with them anyway. Mostly, don’t assume it’s about you or that you have done something wrong.
So the next time your wife snaps at you … let them. Maybe they are having a bad day and need an extra hug. Dig into this theory for yourself and see how it can transform your own life one day at a time.

Broomfield’s new water use ordinance, effective since January 1, is a great opportunity for residents to save both water and money. As the season turns to spring and summer, limit landscape irrigation to the cooler hours of 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. to help reduce water waste due to evaporation, and allowing moisture to soak into your soil where it’s needed most. This change contributes to Broomfield’s long-term water conservation efforts and helps keep your water bills in check, making it a winwin for the community and your wallet!
To follow the new guidelines, simply adjust your irrigation system to water during the designated hours. If you’re planting new grass or sod, just remember
If you notice water running off sidewalks or down streets in your neighborhood, take a moment to report it using Broomfield’s easy online form at Broomfield.org/SaveWater.
to stick to the cooler hours and use the cycle and soak method. One of the benefits of cycle and soak is that you can water less frequently, meeting the new ordinance’s 3-days a week requirement. This technique, which involves watering in short intervals with breaks in between, helps your new lawn establish without wasting water.
Planting low-water landscaping

is an excellent way to reduce water consumption while maintaining a beautiful yard. Native plants and droughttolerant species thrive in Colorado’s climate, requiring less water and upkeep. By choosing plants that are adapted to the region, you’ll save water, reduce maintenance costs, and support local wildlife. Consider a variety of WaterWise landscaping options, such as succulents, ornamental grasses, and shrubs, to create a resilient and sustainable landscape requiring minimal irrigation.

Overall, Broomfield’s watering ordinance is an opportunity to be part of the solution while keeping your landscape healthy and vibrant. It’s a simple change that can make a big difference in preserving our valuable water resources. Every year, as Broomfield High School students don their finest attire for prom, an army of dedicated parents and volunteers prepares for another beloved tradition: Just After Midnight (JAM). Since 1990, JAM has provided a safe, fun, and alcohol-free after-prom experience, ensuring students have a night to remember for all the right reasons.
community institution, and I want to be part of a world where things like JAM exist.”
The impact of JAM extends far beyond a single night of fun. For Shelle Ferarro, a longtime JAM volunteer and Room Chairperson since 2007, the importance of the event is deeply personal. “When I was in high school, there was always someone who was injured or died on prom night. Helping with JAM gives me the feeling that I’m truly helping keep today’s kids safe on prom night.”
JAM isn’t just an after-party; it’s an experience like no other. On April 26, while students enjoy prom night, Broomfield High School will be transformed into an immersive wonderland with themed rooms, dazzling decorations, and exciting activities that make it feel like a completely new space. The celebration continues from midnight to 4:00 a.m., welcoming all juniors and seniors, whether they attend prom or not. More than 400 parents, volunteers, and teachers work behind the scenes to bring this magical night to life, proving that it truly takes a village to pull off something this spectacular.
For Kimiko Egy, a JAM Room Co-Chairperson and mom to Kalena, class of 2023, and Annie, a junior, volunteering with JAM has been a rewarding experience. “I was hesitant when I first tiptoed toward JAM. What I found quickly assuaged my hesitation: a welcoming, cooperative, friendly group of parents participating in a well-oiled machine! JAM is an unbelievable
Erika Pazol, JAM Co-Chair and mom to Kylie, class of 2022, and Rylan, a senior, has witnessed firsthand the magic of the event. “Seeing the whole school transformed into a beautiful and often unrecognizable space and a massive fun zone for the students brings me so much happiness. This long-standing Broomfield tradition truly makes a difference and keeps our kids safe on a night when they can make less-than-safe decisions. That feels good.”
One of the most unique aspects of JAM is the community walk-through, held every year from 7.00 to 9:00 p.m., before students arrive for the event. Each year, more than 1,500 parents, local businesses, and community members take the opportunity to tour the transformed school, admiring the elaborate decorations and immersive themes that make each JAM so special. The walk-through not only builds excitement for the event but also reinforces the strong community support that has made JAM possible for the last 35 years.
Year after year, more than 90% of BHS students show up for JAM- not just for the fun, but because they know it’s something special. It’s proof of what can happen when a community comes together to give its kids a night they’ll never forget.
Don’t miss this year’s Public Community Walk Thru on Saturday, April 26, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Broomfield High School.

he Broomfield Council for the Arts and Humanities (BCAH) presents its 3rd Annual Art Gala Friday, May 2 and it is promised to be an event not to be missed!
The theme this year is “Elevate Creativity.”
“This theme embodies the purpose of our annual gala,” explained BCAH’s Executive Director Keri Dillingham. “To rally supporters who appreciate the value of arts, culture, and creative experiences for all ages, particularly youth, and elevate it to a place where all can access opportunities that impact their lives.”
“More than ever, the arts are a great connecter,” explained Dillingham. She’s been with BCAH for 10 years. “We need the arts to awaken our smiles. BCAH works to make that happen. Having the profile of the arts in Broomfield raised, and awakening hope for years to come.”
Before becoming executive director of BCAH, Dillingham used her business background, marketing, and writing skills in other meaningful capacities. Dillingham holds a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology from CU Boulder and has lived in Broomfield for 25 years.
The location of this year’s Art Gala will again be The Establishment at Bradburn, offering multiple spaces throughout the evening for a unique presentation of entertainment, an inspiring youth panel, and an immersive experience, said Dillingham.
Oh, and what an immersive experience awaits.
“Our signature Creative Immersion Room will lead attendees through experiences of art creation, fascination, and joy as they are immersed in hands-on exploration enhancing all senses,” explained Dillingham.
And because this gala is only once a year, attendees are encouraged to dress-up and make it a night. Suggested attire is creative black tie with a twist: Come as your favorite piece of art or visionary icon, such as an artist, performer, designer, scientist, author, anything, really. There may even be a contest for best dressed.
Keri Dillingham, BCAH executive director said, “One of BCAH’s goals is to offer a creative community.” Courtesy photo
Dillingham said her hope for the organization is to remain sustainable and to grow in offering a variety of diverse, creative programs.
“One of BCAH’s goals is to offer a creative community,” she explained. “A place for creative people and artists. One of our main focuses is to have a place for creatives (artists; performers; inventors) to express themselves, and give residents diverse experiences.”
Sponsorships for this year’s Art Gala are available and gratefully appreciated - all information for sponsorships and ticketing can be found on www.ArtsinBroomfield.org.

As we all get the urge to purge our spaces for a lighter and brighter 2025, the City and County of Broomfield is preparing the annual Spring Cleanup program. Over four weekends this spring, the Broomfield City and County will come pick up and dispose of large, non-hazardous items left outside your home, totally free of charge. Starting Saturday April 19, and continuing the next three Saturdays, April 26, May 3, and May 10, trucks will come zone by zone to discard bulky items. To participate, all you have to do is place your items outside by 7:00 a.m. the morning of your zone’s pick up day, being sure to place your items on the curb and not block any sidewalks or driveways.

The Next Edition of The Our Broomfield History Series The Contribution of Immigration April 15th at 6:30 p.m. The Crescent Grange 7901 W 120th Ave., Broomfield, CO 80020
The Broomfield Crescent Grange and Our Broomfield magazine are pleased to announce the second presentation in the Our Broomfield History Series: The Contribution of Immigration. Broomfield is rich in the stories of immigrant families and individuals who settled in our area to enhance the life experience of those around them.
This presentation will emphasize post-WWII immigration and its effects, which last to the current day. The topic is complex, but to address some of it, the organizers are convening a panel of three individuals, who can speak to the immigration experience through the years: Nicki Battista (daughter of Italian immigrants), Gena Valdez (nurse, originally from Mexico); Dr. Mirwais Baheej (physician, originally from Afghanistan). The moderator of this panel discussion is Tina Eichner, the owner and publisher of Our Broomfield magazine and the granddaughter of Italian immigrants.
We hope to see you there!
To register to attend the presentation, please go to the Grange website, www.crescentgrange.org.
Proceeds for this presentation will go toward the construction of an ADA-compliant bathroom on the first floor of the Grange.

The loss of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult challenges, and finding a funeral home is often the last thing on a family’s mind. However, choosing the right one can make all the difference. At In Memoriam, personalized funeral and cremation services are provided with deep care and commitment. Serving all religions, cultures, and beliefs, the team prioritizes education and transparency. Every family is treated with the utmost respect during their time of loss, with a mission that extends beyond the service to provide ongoing aftercare and guidance.
While planning a funeral is an important step, supporting those who are grieving is just as crucial. Knowing what to say—or what not to say—can make a meaningful difference in helping someone navigate their loss. Conversations with the bereaved can be challenging, and well-meaning words sometimes unintentionally deepen their sadness. While no one can claim to be an expert in these delicate moments, there are thoughtful ways to offer comfort and support.
honoring a life that was lived.
Grief is a constant presence in the world, with death being just one of many sources. Those mourning a loss often hear well-meaning but unhelpful phrases such as, “They’re in a better place;” or “At least they didn’t suffer.” While intended to provide comfort, such statements can sometimes intensify sorrow. The most important thing when speaking with someone who is grieving is to simply listen. This may mean allowing silence rather than filling it with unnecessary words, letting them express anger or frustration without judgment, or refraining from sharing personal experiences with grief unless asked.
A simple and supportive statement such as “I’m so sorry this has happened. I’m here for you.” can be far more meaningful than attempting to offer explanations or solutions.
In the immediate aftermath of a loss, families may be overwhelmed with phone calls from investigators, medical professionals, and funeral directors. A brief text such as “I’m here for you during this difficult time. You don’t need to respond right away.” can be far more supportive than a series of questions.
While many people reach out to the bereaved on birthdays or anniversaries, it is also meaningful to acknowledge those dates in advance, letting them know their loved one is remembered. Grief is not only about loss—it is also about
In Memoriam provides traditional funeral services without operating a conventional funeral home. When a loved one enters their care, they remain on-site in Broomfield, ensuring that cremation clients are never transferred elsewhere. One thankful customer shared, “I would highly recommend In Memoriam to all my family and friends. Kelsi is such a pleasure to work with and makes such a sad and tough time just that much easier to get through. Thank you for everything you did for our family—we truly appreciated it all.”
In an industry often dominated by a sales-driven, corporate mindset, In Memoriam upholds the values of a family-owned business. They believe that end-of-life care should be as unique as the individual and remain dedicated to a philosophy of families caring for families.

could not have been more impressed with In Memoriam. e professionalism, attention to detail and overall care and sympathy they showed us in our darkest hours was amazing. ey have and still are answering all of our questions as we navigate the loss of our father. e warm boutique type atmosphere was so inviting and comforting compared to other places that tend to be stale and cold. We as a family would highly recommend In Memoriam when you are dealing with some of the hardest times of your life.”

here are many nights I wait until the last minute to figure out dinner and everyone is starving. Breakfast for dinner always comes through. Pancakes, eggs, sausages … super quick and easy. Here are a few recipes that take more thought ahead of time, but can easily be thrown in the oven last minute. Here are my favorites!
(Once Upon A Chef)
Ingredients:
• 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan
• ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
• 1⅓ lbs brioche (you'll likely need two loaves but you won't use it all)
• 5 large eggs
• 1½ cups half-and-half
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3 tablespoons Grand Marnier
• 1 teaspoon orange zest
• ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions:
Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with butter. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with the brown sugar, corn syrup, and one tablespoon of water, stirring with a whisk until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan.
Slice off the crusts from the brioche (it doesn't need to be perfect). Cut the bread into 1½-inch thick slices. Arrange the bread slices on top of the caramel, making sure the entire base of the pan is covered.
In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, Grand Marnier, orange zest, and salt until well combined. Pour evenly over bread. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 20 minutes or overnight.
Preheat the oven to 350°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Bake, uncovered, in the middle of the oven until puffed and golden, 40-50 minutes. Let cool a few minutes (it will deflate), then serve immediately. The caramel base hardens up as it cools, so it's important to serve hot.
Ingredients:
• 1 Jimmy Dean spicy sausage log
• 1 Jimmy Dean original sausage log
• 1 medium onion, diced
• 5 eggs
• 2 cans cream of celery soup
• 4 cups Rice Krispies
• 1 lb. shredded cheddar cheese
• 1 cup uncooked rice, prepare as directed on package
• 1 packages bacon, cooked and crumbled
Instructions:
Grease 9x13 pan
Brown sausage and onion together and then mix in cooked and crumbled bacon
Mix soup and eggs together
Layer in pan: ½ rice, ½ sausage mixture, ⅓ Rice Krispies, ½ cheese, and repeat layer.
Pour egg mixture over top, sprinkle with remaining Rice Krispies
Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 350°F.
This one
Ingredients:
• 3 cups oats
• ½ cup brown sugar
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• ½ tsp salt
Combine the above
• 1 cup milk
• ½ cup applesauce
• 1 beaten egg
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• ½ cup chopped peaches, fresh or canned (or any fruit you like)
Mix together and add to the dry mixture
Bake in a greased round or square 8x8 pan, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

About Lea Opitz
Lea met her partner, Keith Griffin, at the Broomfield Recreation Center. Together they enjoy their flower and vegetable gardens and playing with their two dogs. Lea also likes to paint and make decorative beaded suncatchers.

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet "insert name," our goal is to introduce Broomfield change-makers and highlight their contributions.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job as a home childcare provider?
A: I love the children’s sweet, innocent faces and the funny things they say. I am just one part of this tiny human's day, but what I like about my job is observing those moments, how the kids grow!
Q: Tell us a little about your career path.
A: I started working for the City of Broomfield in 1995 as a childcare provider. I had been a nanny and had done home childcare after my daughter Lauren, was born in 1990. I then got hired to be a facility supervisor and I worked for Recreation Services for ten years. I taught art, CPR, and babysitter’s training. I assisted in the design of the childcare room for the Paul Derda Recreation Center. And then I lost 1/2 my hearing and everything became so difficult.
Q. Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?
A: Oh, my favorite person in Broomfield is John Ferarro. He was the Director of Recreation Services when I was first hired as a childcare provider. John would ask me to help do all the special events and hired me as a supervisor when I wasn't doing childcare. He had so much faith in me. He is a kind man. He was a great leader and taught me many things. John was the best boss.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?
A: I haven't been able to eat out much since my hearing loss. The ear that can hear is sensitive to noise, so everything is too loud for me. I cannot hear a conversation in a noisy and busy place like a restaurant. Not only is it loud, it hurts. The noise causes me pain. It's a good thing Keith loves to cook!
My favorite park is The Bay Aquatic Park. What a wonderful place for young kids. I love everything about it. I also enjoy the public art benches, the trails, and how well they are maintained.
Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?
A: I like driving through certain parts of the city like Midway Blvd. and enjoying the trees in the parks and landscaped medians. I especially love it in the winter when the trees along that route are lit up. It's so festive and it brings me so much joy.
Q: Who inspires you to be a better person?
A: My dad (Dr. John M. Opitz). He died two years ago this August. He was a geneticist and was editor in chief of the American Journal of Medical Genetics. He loved animals, children, flowers, rocks, and art. He worked very hard every day of his life until he was ready to die. I miss him.
