FROM THE

EDITOR

EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Tina Eichner

Our Gratitude Thanksgiving presents a great opportunity to reflect on our lives, think about what matters most, and take inventory of our blessings. The past several months have been filled with many good things for this magazine, for myself, and for my family. Our Broomfield was recognized by the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce as Small Business of the Year, and we were a finalist in a national magazine contest in the category of Best New Publication. We enjoyed wonderful days as exhibitors at Broomfield Days and Taste It and we celebrated our Ribbon Cutting with support from the Broomfield Chamber and Broomfield FISH. We also held a joyous family party to toast our first year in business. Through these activities and at other local fall events, we met with many readers and advertisers face-to-face and in each interaction enjoyed hearing your appreciation and feedback. Through another venture, I had the opportunity to support logistics when the President of the United States passed through Colorado. And I also had the chance to participate in my beloved hobby as a dancer a few times this fall. As each of these events occurred, I would stop for a moment and pause and give thanks. Like many times in my life, the word “charmed,” came to mind. But even as they happened, I paused and tried to hold on to the good feelings and take just a little bit from each good day and store it in my pocket. Because just as surely as good days come, difficult days do too. As we bring this Thanksgiving issue to a close, I am facing a medical issue. Small but still serious, and concerning to those who care about me. When I talked with my Dad about it, I greeted him with a smile and said, it would be ok because I had my buoy, and that is what the good things are - a buoy to get through the not so gentle waters. As you reflect on your year and your life, your joys and your sorrows, that is what I hope for you this Thanksgiving; that somewhere through it all you have a good solid buoy and a few good people with a firm hold on the rope. The storms will pass. Thanks for reading,

Nurse Achieves Inspiring Accomplishments on the Trail, and in the ER

Paul Hooge is used to taking on challenges inside and outside of Centura Avista Adventist Hospital’s Emergency Department. By night, he’s a nurse manager overseeing operations in the ER, and he is going on 23 years at the hospital.

O

utside of work, he’s an accomplished trail runner who has completed many 100-mile trail races over the years, but what he did in May recently landed him a feature story in Trail Runner Magazine and in the record books. “This was just a challenge for myself to see what I could do,” Paul told the magazine. Partly to celebrate his 58th birthday and to do something big after COVID shutdowns, Paul set out to become the first person to run five consecutive roundtrips across the Grand Canyon and back. Yes, that means he ran all the way down into the canyon, across the Colorado River, up the other side – and back. Then he did it again, four more times, with several hours rest in between trips. He totaled a stunning 226 miles in less than five days in a row! “I’ve done this sort of thing for quite some time, so I’m always planning something. Mostly I do it because I enjoy it. I’m not trying to prove anything to anybody.” He’d never done anything quite like this, though, and his accomplishment is now officially recorded as a “fastest known time,” putting him on record as the first to do it. Paul says he doesn’t run to get attention and doesn’t consider himself an elite runner. However, Centura Health’s mission of caring for those who are ill does help inspire him on the trail, especially the patients he meets at work. “I feel working in the ER you see people at the most difficult times in their life, and one thing I really appreciate about what I do is that it gives me that ability to feel very fortunate about my life and my health. I really appreciate that gift from my patients to help me push through things.” That has also helped keep him on the job for 23 years at Avista, along with the people he works with. “I came initially to work a year, realized it was a great hospital and system and I couldn’t pull myself away,” he said. “When you work with people in that kind of stressful environment, you begin to develop bonds and learn how to work with people more and more and become a better team.” He says he has more trail running goals, but he still enjoys trading his running shoes for his badge when it’s time to help lead his team on overnight shifts.

My coworkers are fantastic nurses and really truly are dedicated to what they do. I hope we can continue to make [Avista] a place that attracts nurses and that we can keep people there for a long time. That’s what builds a great team.

Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, Colorado, is a comprehensive medical center that provides a full range of medical specialties and exceptional health care to the Louisville, Superior, Broomfield, and surrounding Boulder area communities. BUSY FAMILIES

T HE ART O F

Gathering By Lisa Payne

When November rolls around, my mind goes straight to Thanksgiving and gathering around the table with others. It makes me so happy that I start thinking of all the chances to gather with as many people as possible during the month of November. But then the season gets busy with other things, and I usually end up celebrating only on the actual day of Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I love Thanksgiving day and the people I am with. I love the traditions and the food and the company of family. I know many people put a lot more effort into the meal on this day of the year than any other day. And sometimes I wonder why just one day? Why not have more meaningful gatherings throughout the year? I once watched a great Ted Talk from Priya Parker about how to better connect while gathering with others. I’ve always thought I did this well, but after watching I realized I have it about half right. I have the “hosting” of the gathering down (good food, fun music), but I may not always have the meaning of the gathering emphasized the way I want. Priya believes there are five things that make a gathering meaningful. The first is to find out the purpose of the gathering. If you are having a baby shower for someone, are you following the usual etiquette of gifts and games, and is that what the guest of honor really wants? Maybe the mother-to-be is afraid of the transition into parenthood. You could tweak the shower to have everyone write down their best advice during their own transition into parenthood and put it in a book for the guest of honor.

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 2021

The second thing that Priya encourages is over exclusion. She says that nothing kills a party faster than the wrong people or too many who dilute the meaning. Try for smaller, more intimate gatherings. The third is to write an invitation that persuades people to want to come to your party. Instead of just the date, time and location, write a sentence that entices. If you plan to cook a specific ethnic food, ask if they would like to travel to this country from the comfort of your home? The fourth is to include rules in the invitation. If it is a “mom’s lunch” to get out and get away from the kids for an hour, say that whoever talks about their kids first has to pay the bill. The last thing Priya says is to end the gathering with intention. You don’t have to wait until the party is crashing with tired guests. End when things are still fun and alive. Put an end time on the invite or say “before you all leave let’s get a group photo” and then walk them to the door. Regardless if we use any of these guidelines from Priya, I say let’s gather more and be among others, whatever that may look like. From my experience, sometimes the simplest of gatherings end up being the most meaningful.

CCOB Loves and Supports Our Broomfield Seniors By Jennifer Hoffman, City and County Manager

It’s no secret - I love our seniors. From cutting hair after-hours, to water aerobics at the Bay, I make time to fill my cup by simply being surrounded by Broomfield’s senior community.

S

o when the COVID-19 lockdowns started in 2020, it quickly became apparent that seniors would be disproportionately impacted by the pandemic both because of increased vulnerability to the virus and because of the greater isolation some seniors would experience during lockdowns. I knew we had to step up for our seniors. Early on we committed to continuing to provide freshly made, nutritious meals through our Meals-on-Wheels program versus the frozen alternative most transitioned to, recognizing the demand would be more important than ever during extended isolation. We also supported mask, book, and craft delivery for those 60+, expanded prescription and grocery delivery options, made regular phone calls, and created new programs and solutions as needs came up. Additionally, we expanded the relatively new SnowPal program, which I came up with a few years earlier, to help connect volunteers with seniors and others who needed help with snow shoveling. As the program evolved, a growing need for yard work and connection evolved, thus the Broomfield Pals Program was born quickly in the COVID lockdown. As winter came, calls were quickly made for volunteers, and since then, 38 volunteers have provided regular assistance with outdoor projects to 50 of their neighbors. Not all residents who need assistance are seniors. Some Broomfield Pals participants have medical conditions that prohibit them from engaging in physically demanding activity while others provide 24-hour care to members of their households, leaving them unable to take the couple hours necessary to complete outdoor chores. The Broomfield Pals program exists to fill these gaps, connect neighbors, and ensure Broomfield residents receive the support they need to care for their homes. Throughout the past year, Broomfield Pals volunteers shoveled snow from sidewalks, driveways, and walkways, ensuring neighbors could safely enter and exit their homes. They mowed lawns, raked leaves, pulled weeds, and installed fence posts to ensure neighbors had beautiful outdoor spaces and remained in compliance with the municipal code. These volunteers have provided reliable support that their neighbors have come to depend on. One of the most inspiring things about the Broomfield Pals program are the relationships formed between volunteers and

16

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 2021

There is a growing demand in Broomfield for snow shoveling and yard work support. At least 25 additional Snow Pal volunteers are needed to provide regular snow shoveling assistance for Broomfield neighbors. Volunteers will be matched with one or more residents for the entire snow season and are asked to remove snow by noon of the day following the snowfall. For more information and to sign-up to volunteer, please visit Broomfield.org/BroomfieldPals.

their neighbors. Conversations and in-person interaction when a volunteer swings by a neighbor’s home provide important opportunities for social connection. Residents who are isolated during the week find these interactions especially meaningful. Sometimes these relationships grow into friendships between neighbors. A number of volunteers stay in touch with their Pals yearround. Some have found themselves attending outings together or helping with projects beyond the snow shoveling season. It’s these connections between neighbors that fuel the small-town sense of community that Broomfield is known for fostering. To all Broomfield Pals volunteers who have dedicated time to shoveling sidewalks and mowing lawns this past year, thank you for being a great Broomfield neighbor. Your service makes Broomfield more resilient and strengthens our ‘small-town’ community.

With Gratitude,

Jennifer Hoffman

BROOMFIELD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Seasonal Drive Multiplies Community Impact By Megan Mayes

The month of November is traditionally a time for giving thanks and reflecting on all of our good fortune throughout the year. When reflecting on the past year or so, we might also think of the hardships we have faced as individuals and as a community. As we prepare to sit around Thanksgiving tables filled to the edges with food, family, and friends, many people in our community are still struggling to meet their most basic needs. Broomfield is a community known for helping our neighbors, and the Broomfield Community Foundation is furthering this effort through Broomfield Gives Month. While taking the time to be thankful for the good in your own life, you can also be supporting local non-profits that are helping our neighbors thrive. Marianna Williamson, the Executive Director for the Broomfield Community Foundation, said “Тhis is a great opportunity to get involved with Broomfield philanthropy. A donation to the Broomfield Community Foundation truly creates a stronger and more vibrant community for us all.” The foundation supports the community by distributing grants to a wide variety of organizations, services, and businesses. These groups include arts, civic support, disaster relief, education, human service, scholarships, senior resources, and small businesses. Despite the hardships of 2020, and thanks to the support and generosity of the Broomfield community, the foundation was able to give back $418,406 in total grants last year. When you give back through the Broomfield Community Foundation and Broomfield Gives Month, they help you give more. This year, a group of Community Champions made up

of local businesses and individuals has promised to collectively match up to $25,000 in donations raised through the Broomfield Gives Month initiative. So, when you donate $10 in the month of November, the Broomfield Community Foundation receives $20 and their community support power doubles. The Community Champions for Broomfield Gives Month 2021 are Sill-TerHar Motors; My Doula LLC, Newborn Care Specialist; Amazon, Inc.; Bill and Jean Markel; and an anonymous donor. These Community Champions are encouraging individuals, families, and businesses to donate by November 30 to have your donation doubled and maximize its effect. Marianna said, “In this season of giving please join your neighbors in supporting the causes that are closest to your heart by joining our Broomfield Gives campaign through iGive 365, unrestricted donations, or a gift in honor of a loved one.” The iGive 365 program is a commitment to give $1 for every day of the year, creating a larger network of donors who are making Broomfield stronger together. This is a great option for people interested in philanthropy and wanting to make a significant impact on our community. As of September 30, the grants this year have totaled $250,000. Every donation in November, and through the end of the year, will help the foundation reach and hopefully exceed the total grants from 2020. As you gather with friends and family to celebrate this holiday season, we hope gratitude and generosity continue to fill your hearts and you consider donating to the Broomfield Gives Month campaign.

Visit the Broomfield Community Foundation website at broomfieldfoundation.org or broomfieldgives.com to find more information and make your donation.

BRUNNER FARMHOUSE:

A Broomfield Historic Treasure for the Ages By Megan Mayes

The little yellow farmhouse on the hill overlooking Broomfield invokes feelings of whimsy and memories of time past. The picturesque porch and abundant gardens enhance its beauty while the surrounding trails and open space invite visitors to slow down and enjoy all that the naturally calming landscape has to offer. This is the Brunner Farmhouse, a Broomfield treasure that serves as a historical landmark, a gathering place for the community, and a lasting family legacy.

The Brunner Farmhouse was built in 1908 and was originally located near 120th Avenue and Ash Street. It was the heart of a 100-acre farm, and home to three generations of the Brunner family. At that time, Broomfield was a rural farming community with big open fields and a few friendly neighbors. The Brunner farm was growing corn, alfalfa, and other grains to feed their dairy cows. Lester Brunner grew up in the farmhouse, and fondly remembers life on the family farm. He recalled harvest times when all of the neighbors would work together on each others’ farms, saying “My dad had the only thresher … if they needed help, my family would go help them during harvest or any other time they needed help. And the same went for them when we had our harvest, they would come and help us.” Through the years, the Brunner Farmhouse continued to be a place for family and friends to gather together. Mark Brunner, Lester’s son, called the farm “a great place to grow up, filled with machinery, old barns, and treehouses to play in.” He has many cherished memories of Thanksgivings spent in the farmhouse kitchen cooking with his grandmother and eating around a long table with family. This family legacy is intricately tied with the history of Broomfield, and the Brunner family is proud to know that “even though Broomfield has changed, the farmhouse is going to be there forever. It brings back memories of how Broomfield used to be. And family, always family.”

20

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 2021

Despite their love for the farmhouse, the Brunner family sold the farm in 1998. The beloved yellow farmhouse was going to be demolished, until an eleventh hour proposal saved it with a new location and a new purpose. The Brunner Farmhouse would be moved to land that was previously part of the Kozisek family farm. It now resides at Main Street and Midway Boulevard, adjacent to “The Field” Open Space. This move was due in-part to another passionate Brunner family member, Tom Brunner, who was on

the Broomfield City Council at the time. The vision for the farmhouse was to see it restored and transformed as a community gathering space. The Brunner family donated the building with this in mind, and in 2007 the Brunner Farmhouse became one of the first designated historic buildings by the Broomfield Preservation Ordinance. Today, the Brunner Farmhouse is used by more than 50 community groups and local non-profits as a meeting space. The schedule and the farmhouse are managed and maintained by the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities. Keri Dillingham, the Executive Director for BCAH, appreciates the flexibility of the space because “it is a resource for groups who need meeting space but cannot afford the market rate.” Groups that use the space can pay a fee or give back to the farmhouse as payment, including volunteering for maintenance projects or

donating supplies. Although the farmhouse is not open to the public, appointments can be made for tours and the schedule of public events and support group meetings is available through the Brunner Farmhouse Facebook page. The house has been converted into several meeting spaces, but it is filled with pictures of both the Brunner family and farm. The farmhouse serves as a starting point for many Broomfield trails in The Field, and is a great place to take a break while walking, or end a day outdoors with a picnic. The 15 beautiful gardens surrounding the farmhouse are cared for by a team of dedicated volunteers made up of master gardeners and mentees. Shari Burton, the Chairperson for the Brunner Farmhouse Advisory Committee, reflects on the gardens as “a flourishing place that is truly beautiful because everyone who works on it really has a passion for it.” Most recently, the Teaching Garden was added thanks to the sponsorship of Olsen Outdoor as part of an effort to make the gardens a horticultural education center. The Brunner Farmhouse is a legacy of family values and an icon of the Broomfield community. Mark Brunner says, “I hear stories all the time of people discovering the property for the first time and it becomes a favorite place that they visit all the time now. We can’t thank the community enough for bringing this all together.” Visit Brunner Farmhouse on Facebook to see what events are coming up, or go to the little yellow house on the hill because you never know what you will find! Visit brunnerhouse.org for more information about volunteering or adopting a garden.

Veteran Battles to Bring Afghani ‘Brother in Arms’ to Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

In combat, you never quit, and for one Broomfield veteran, that never-quit attitude helped save the lives of a family earlier this year. Scott Henkel, the son of a decorated Vietnam combat veteran, did not intend to pursue a military career, but while he was a student and track athlete at Colorado State University, financial circumstances prompted him to apply for an ROTC scholarship during his junior year. After graduation in 1998, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and served on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division as well as with the Space and Missile Defense Command. “While I was active duty, I was in the air defense artillery field,” said Henkel. “I knew how to jump out of airplanes and shoot down helicopters. That was what I was trained to do.” Newly married in 2004, Henkel elected to leave active duty to pursue a civilian career while on inactive ready reserve (IRR) status. However, he was called back to active duty in 2006 and sent to Afghanistan as a civil affairs officer tasked with nation-building activities. His job in Afghanistan entailed operating ‘out of the wire’ in the impoverished province of Zabul, engaging with the local citizens and government officials to commission projects designed to help improve their lives. That included building roads, bridges, hospitals, and schools.

24

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 2021

Henkel learned a bit of the local languages but needed the help of a translator to carry out his unit’s missions. As the senior ranking officer in his compound, Henkel got to choose an interpreter, and Ahmad Siddiqi, who the American soldiers called Kevin, was the best. Not only did Siddiqi provide the word-to-word translations needed to communicate, but he also brought cultural context to conversations Henkel had with locals and sometimes kept his unit out of danger. “I didn’t want to go outside of the wire without Kevin,” said Henkel. “I had a team of four U.S. soldiers and the five of us rolled together every time for at least 450 missions.” One time, Siddiqi figured out that a local official Henkel was talking to was actually a Taliban commander who had ordered an attack on Henkel’s unit earlier that day. He warned Henkel that the village was full of Taliban fighters. “I would have built them roads,” said Henkel. “That’s just one example of how invaluable he was, and he was a lifesaver, too, because we very well could have

been ambushed on the way back had he not done that. He was a critical piece to our team. We couldn’t have functioned without him.” Henkel calls Siddiqi a ‘true brother in arms,’ noting that the interpreter returned fire along with U.S. soldiers. His work with U.S. forces was tantamount to signing his own death warrant, Henkel said. Henkel returned to civilian life in 2009, eventually settling in Broomfield with his family. While other interpreters Henkel worked with took the opportunity to leave Afghanistan years ago, Siddiqi chose to stay. He wanted to be part of re-building the country to what it had been when his parents -- both of whom were college graduates -- were young. But as the situation began to deteriorate this year, he sought Henkel’s help to get out of the country with his family. Henkel and his wife, Heidi, worked tirelessly throughout the summer to help Siddiqi, his wife and their four children, escape from Afghanistan, including encouraging him to stay positive and not give up. It also meant telling everyone they could about Siddiqi and why they should help him get out. “When I was in country, I was probably one of the most powerful people in that province,” said Henkel. “I had life and death in my hands and billions of dollars of resources and military combat might. Now I’m a middle-aged product manager in Broomfield, Colorado, and I’m completely powerless other than my story.” Thanks to Henkel’s efforts, the Siddiqi family made it out of Afghanistan just as the U.S. evacuation was drawing to a close in August, passing through the airport one day before 13 Marines were killed in a suicide bombing there. In September, the family was in Fort Dix in New Jersey waiting for their papers to be processed, with plans to ultimately settle in Broomfield, a place Siddiqi saw pictures of and said it reminded him of his hometown in Afghanistan. Siddiqi and his family will also meet a community familiar with their story and eager to help them acclimate to their new life in Broomfield. The community has rallied to provide housing, food and other goods as well as getting the children enrolled in school, all before they ever set foot in Colorado. “The community of Broomfield has renewed my faith in humanity, honestly,” said Henkel. “I believe people here are at their core very good people, and I was proven right.” When Henkel returned from Afghanistan, he said he felt uncomfortable when people thanked him for his service, but he now appreciates those sentiments, especially on Veterans Day. “It’s important to mark time on the calendar to remember what we did so that we don’t make the same mistakes in the future,” said Henkel. “For me, civilians understanding and taking a day to appreciate veterans is a piece of that. It’s a reminder that there are people that otherwise you would never have known are veterans and served the country. To take time out of your day and just to say thank you means a lot.” However, Henkel said a better way to thank veterans, especially this year, would be to welcome displaced Afghans into the Broomfield community. “I want to challenge every civilian in the city and county of Broomfield, to make Broomfield the most welcoming and loving destination for Afghans,” he said. “That would really be a thank you for your service.”

Broomfield Rotary Club to Host Local

Wreaths Across America Ceremonies in December By Kristen Beckman

Early on the morning of December 18, friends and loved ones of America’s fallen soldiers will gather along with other citizens to take part in ceremonies to pay their respects to veterans buried at cemeteries across the country.

28

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | November 2021

The ceremonies are part of Wreaths Across America, an effort that started nearly 30 years ago in Harrington, Maine, when the owner of a wreath company found himself with a surplus of wreaths toward the end of the holiday season. Rather than discard the wreaths, he arranged to have them placed on the graves of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, Wreaths Across America has become an annual tradition and expanded across the country. More than 2,500 simultaneous wreath-laying ceremonies now take place at cemeteries across the country. In Broomfield, Wreaths Across America ceremonies will take place at Broomfield County Commons Cemetery and Lakeview Cemetery. The local ceremonies are funded and organized by the Broomfield Rotary Club. Former Broomfield Police Chief Tom Deland and Retired Fire Chief John O’Hayre, a Marine Corps veteran, helped launch the Broomfield Wreaths Across America

“Our Rotary Club believes that it’s important to recognize our veterans, not only during Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but especially around the holidays when families are getting together and people start to think about loved ones that they’ve lost, particularly those who are veterans,”

why Broomfield participates. After that, a member of the Rotary Club or a family member from each military branch lays a ceremonial wreath at stands the club sets up for each service branch. A bugler then plays Taps, and Rotarians assist family members in laying wreaths at the headstone of their loved one and other veterans. “We have a lot of family members of the veterans who have passed away over the years show up at the cemetery,” said Deland. “We have found that it’s really emotional for the family members.” The Rotary Club used to include Louisville Cemetery in its wreath-laying ceremonies but scaled back to focus on the two cemeteries in Broomfield a few years ago. Louisville Cemetery is the final resting place for many Broomfield veterans and citizens. The wreath-laying ceremonies are funded through the Rotary Club Foundation via bingo and other fundraising programs. The city of Broomfield also contributes some funding for the wreaths. The community is encouraged to attend the ceremonies, Deland said, and citizens can also support the effort by donating to the Rotary Foundation. “Our Rotary Club believes that it’s important to recognize our veterans, not only during Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but especially around the holidays when families are getting together and people start to think about loved ones that they’ve lost, particularly those who are veterans,” said Deland. “We’re proud to do it, and we will continue to do it for as long as there’s a Broomfield Rotary Club.”

program about 10 years ago as a Rotary Club project that has been embraced by many Rotarians since then. “We have so many veterans in our club, and our club has always been focused on veterans and public safety,” Deland said. “We thought it’d be a great project for our Rotarians to pick up.” Deland said the club works closely with Home Depot in Broomfield to buy wreaths at a discounted price, which is helpful as the club buys between 75 and 100 wreaths each year. Ceremonies typically include a speech, sometimes given by the mayor, that explains the Wreaths Across America program and

Who We Are. What We Do. Why it Matters. SRB: an Invaluable Community Partner By Bette Erickson

On a warm and colorful autumn afternoon last month, a group of dedicated volunteers and one paid staffer sat around a table at the Eagle Trace Golf Course. The mix of men and women were discussing the recent successful results of their two signature fundraising events.

E

ach year, the third weekend of September, SRB hosts a Friday Golf Tournament and a Saturday Car Show alongside Broomfield Days. The Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) Boardmembers came together that day at the golf club to debrief, as it were, and they learned that both events were a brilliant success. When I decided not to seek re-election to the Broomfield City Council in 2019, several local Boards of Directors invited me to join. I chose SRB, not only because of the team, but because of its mission. SRB’s focus is on improving the lives of Broomfield’s older adults. Although I spent my career teaching at the elementary grade school level and had insight into the needs in that community - there’s much funding and attention to and for youngsters. Our aging population seems to navigate this stage of life often alone and without knowledge of resources available to them. SRB’s reach is broad and varied, and those on the Board of Directors and other volunteers with the organization want to make resource information known to the community, particularly our senior citizens. Take, for instance, a home in Broomfield Heights First Filing neighborhood. It was one

of First Filing’s original model homes built in 1960 or so. The homeowner and visitors, including a Meals on Wheels driver had become increasingly concerned about the sidewalk leading up to the front door. SRB, in particular Board President Ben Vagher, was alerted to the resident’s (a senior citizen) concrete sidewalk hazard and put into motion a way to solve the predicament. It goes without saying that SRB is a longstanding, valuable partner with the City and County of Broomfield and other important community organizations. Broomfield Senior Services at the Broomfield Community Center (BCC) helps older adults navigate resources to support healthy aging and independence, including the areas of prevention, mental health, isolation, and other relevant concerns. Residents are provided resources and advocacy in making contact with appropriate agencies to meet individual needs. Follow up and evaluation are provided to ensure the individual is receiving the appropriate services. Access these resources and many more by calling Broomfield Senior Services at 303-464-5526. Likewise, SRB offers meaningful services to seniors as well. Programs like Meals on Wheels, Project Homecoming which provides five free Meals on Wheels after a

Did you know that SRB also stocks a Loan Closet of medical and mobility equipment at the BCC ? When I broke my foot five or so years ago while snowshoeing, it was SRB’s Loan Closet that supplied me with crutches. Being a part of the SRB community creates for families and seniors a more vibrant and caring environment. Food to Celebrate How You Give Thanks A FRIENDSGIVING DISH TO SHARE

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love to sit around a big table with family and friends and be thankful for so many things. Our family plays a game where we all write on a piece of paper what we are thankful for and put it in a cup. We then each pick a piece of paper out of the cup and go around and guess who wrote what. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving at our house without this tradition. Another tradition I love is one that several of my friends do. They have a Thanksgiving meal with friends before the actual holiday and call it Friendsgiving. With this tradition in mind, I wanted to share a casserole that you can easily prepare should you decide to try a Friendsgiving yourself! Feel free to throw in any vegetables, or serve them on the side with a dollop of cranberry sauce and fresh baked rolls.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Lay the torn bread on a sheet pan and place it in a warm oven until dried out, 1 hour on low heat. 2. Preheat the oven to 325°F. 3. In a medium saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, mushroom, and celery and sauté until tender and translucent, 6 to 8 minutes. 4. Add the garlic and flour and cook, whisking constantly, until fragrant but not burned, about 1 minute. Add the garlic salt, salt, and pepper and slowly pour in the cream. Cook, whisking often, until just at a simmer, about 5 minutes. 5. Spread the chicken in a 9 × 13-inch baking dish and spread the sour cream on top. Pour the cream sauce evenly on top and sprinkle on the bread cubes. Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter, mix it with the chicken broth, and pour it over the casserole, coating the bread well.

GUYS WHO GIVE

100 WOMEN WHO CARE

Empower Area Non-Profits with Exponential Gifts By Bette Erickson

“Broomfield shows up,” says lifelong resident Emily Course-Joo. And there’s no better example of this than the organizations Guys Who Give and 100 Women Who Care.

Both groups have donated thousands of dollars to area non-profits battling homelessness and hunger, empowering women and children, and supporting arts and education — all while encouraging philanthropy and camaraderie.

The 100WWC group is made up of women who collectively Who Give. He adds, we meet “….while enjoying a local beer support non-profits in Broomfield by donating $100 each at with a bunch of friends.” their quarterly meeting and selecting a local non-profit Guys Who Give members also meet once a quarter, to receive the money raised. Both groups provide an opportunity “Guys Who Give is “I like 100 Women Who Care because for members to learn about local nonthe only place where I can I learn about a much wider group of nonprofit organizations. are given about five minutes to make their pitch, and the “I like 100 Women group casts a silent vote. Who Care because I At the end of the learn about a much wider gathering, votes are tallied group of non-profits than and everyone writes a the ones I’m usually check, or hands in cash, exposed to” for at least $100. And when combined, that’s a lot of money donated to a charitable organization. For instance, when 100 women or men donate, of course, that sums to at least a $10,000 donation. Broomfield’s 100 Women Who Care is currently made up of more than 100 members. As soon as all donations are collected, either in-person or online through their website, typically a meeting is arranged with the charity, and one or two representatives from either Guys Who Give or 100 Women Who Care and the person who nominated the organization. These benevolent groups are not for everyone, and that’s okay. For instance, members may be hesitant to join for reasons other than time and cost commitment. Participants are expected to donate to the group that is selected. “I am always thrilled when people give to charity, and the idea of a group of women pooling their resources to make more of an impact is wonderful,” Councilmember Liz LawEvans explained. “But my family and I have chosen to give to charities that we are passionate about. We don’t want to inadvertently give to a charity that is not aligned with our family’s values just because the group decided it was the thing to do.” GUYS WHO GIVE The next meeting of Guys Who Give is at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 10 at Wonderland Brewing Company, 5450 W. 120th Ave., in Broomfield. WASTEWATER DIVISION

Wanted: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy Last Seen:

Wanted for:

Loitering in Sinks and Drains

Causing Sewer Overflows and Back-ups

BEWARE OF THE GREASE GOBLIN • Never pour grease down sinks, drains or into toilets. • Grease can clog pipes and cause sewer overflows and back-ups into basements, yards, and storm drains. • Grease overflows and back-ups pose potential health risks and environmental problems that can be costly to clean up.

SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • Once cooled, pour cooking oils and grease into a nonrecyclable container. Add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container and place in the trash. • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines. • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin. • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines. • Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.

MORE SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • •

Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors. Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336. Start a compost pile at your home with food scraps that are not meat.
