FROM THE

EDITOR

Broomfield Round-up When I sat down to write the column this month, I was pleasantly surprised to have a short list of topics that we were not able to cover within the issue. It made me happy because it feels like the wheels of our community are starting to move again. Let's hope so!

One Book One Broomfield Selection The Broomfield Library is asking for the community’s help to select the book for One Book One Broomfield 2021. The following titles are being considered: 1. “Afterlife” by Julia Alvarez 2. “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones

3. “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi 4. “There There” by Tommy Orange

You can vote at www.BroomfieldVoice.com/OneBook until March 31. Broomfield Days Logo Contest The community is invited to participate in the Broomfield Days Logo Contest by submitting a design and slogan for the theme for Broomfield Days 2021. All designs are due by March 8. Visit www.broomfield.org/603/Broomfield-Days-Logo for more information. Shep’s Bridge Broomfield’s most famous dog, Shep, has been honored by naming the new Broomfield Midway Bridge "Shep's Crossing.” Broomfield residents can now travel across the train tracks and remember Broomfield's unofficial 4-legged mascot. When US 36 opened as a toll road in the 1950s, a stray dog who became known as "Shep" assumed the role of honorary toll booth greeter and became a vivid part of Broomfield's history. We wrote about Shep in our November 2020 Pets issue. You can find the article here: https://issuu.com/ourbroomfieldmagazine/docs/nov20_ourbroomfield_issuu Rosann’s Park This spring the park named in honor of Broomfield icon Rosann Doran will be dedicated. Rosann, who passed in 2018, was a pillar of the community including serving as a longtime local journalist and the City’s public information officer for many years. Final preparations are being made for the park and a few more donations are needed. To contribute to the effort, donations may be sent to Jean Paxton. If you would like to get in touch with Jean, you can message me at Tina@OurBroomfield.com.The park on the northern corner of Iris Circle and the Community Ditch is known informally as Miramonte Park and will now be ”Rosann Doran Park.” The park will include a bench dedicated in her honor and the garden will include roses and iris from Rosann's garden at her home. More details to come soon. Home Issue Coming in April Business owners: don’t miss the chance to let Broomfield residents know that your business is the best place to go for all of their home services and home improvement needs. Our April issue will be all about the home! For advertising information contact Tammy at Tammy@OurBroomfield.com or 303-908-5465. Thanks for reading,

COMMUNITY

EVENTS MARCH 16 Heart of Broomfield Awards The Broomfield Community Foundation is hosting the 21st Annual Heart of Broomfield Awards on March 16; a virtual event. Each year, the Heart of Broomfield honors Broomfield citizens who have made a positive impact on the community. This year, the event will be held virtually on March 16 at 6:00 p.m. Registration for the event is available on the Broomfield Community Foundation website under the Events tab.

In 2020, the Broomfield Community Foundation recognized people who had made a difference in the community during the height of the COVID19 pandemic by identifying Heart of Broomfield Community Coronavirus Heroes. Throughout the spring and early summer, 16 community members were honored for their efforts in Broomfield. Because of community helpers who emerged during the pandemic, new categories were added to this year’s Heart of Broomfield Awards to recognize both individuals and teams who have helped others through COVID. The Health Care Hero Award will recognize an outstanding individual in the healthcare industry who has exemplified commitment, responsibility, duty and honor during an incredibly tumultuous year. Additionally, the Heart of Gold Organizational Award recognizes a group of volunteers, a business, a department, or a collaborative team whose combined efforts have strengthened our community. Along with these new categories, many existing awards will honor people who make a difference in the Broomfield community as is traditional with the Heart of Broomfield. Nominations are closed and winners names

will be announced in advance of the March 16 event. During the virtual event, all winners will be recognized and celebrated. For full details, visit the Heart of Broomfield Awards page under the Events tab at www.BroomfieldFoundation.org. For more than 25 years, the Broomfield Community Foundation has been the leading partner, resource, and voice of philanthropy for the community of Broomfield. By connecting the passion, interests, and energies of donors, nonprofits, community leaders, and residents with knowledge, expertise, relationships, and resources, the Foundation amplifies the generosity of others and creates a stronger, more vibrant community for us all. The Heart of Broomfield is presented by the Broomfield Community Foundation and the Broomfield Enterprise and sponsored by Premier Members Credit Union and Our Broomfield™ Magazine. INSPIRATION FOR

BUSY FAMILIES Active Relaxation to Rejuvenate By Lisa Payne

Last summer I fell in love with yoga. A small group of friends would do it together outside on Friday (FriYAY) mornings with the most amazing teacher, Kylie. Not only did she teach flawlessly across all levels, she also left us with positive messages to carry forward into our day. It became one of our saving graces to restore ourselves during the pandemic. For someone who doesn’t like to work out, I found this calming for my mind and as well as tiring for my body. Things change daily, but it looks like the world is opening back up a bit. With that inevitably comes a faster paced life and added stress. Since many of us are drawn to activities that bring calm and peace into our lives, I wanted to share a way to relax and experience deep well-being. I am known amongst my friends as someone who will always choose to go get coffee versus working out. I love how I feel after a good workout, but the process isn’t always desirable. One day a friend asked me if I had tried restorative yoga. She said it is a way to get all of the deep relaxation benefits of regular yoga without having to move at all. I’m sorry, say that again? The mental benefits without moving my body? Oh my prayers have been answered. I did some research right away and found many online videos and a great article by Caren Baginski who also has free restorative yoga videos on her YouTube channel. She explains restorative yoga as not moving or stretching like other yoga classes. You get into each pose and stay still for five minutes, focusing on your breath in a mindful way. Your body gradually realigns itself during the pose, and your breathing and heart rate slow. You calm down and experience the same well-being as regular yoga, only with a lot less effort. While it may feel passive, it’s more like active relaxation which is the perfect way to calm your busy, overscheduled life. The best part is this is something you can easily do at home with a yoga mat, a few blankets, a scarf or yoga strap and bolsters or bed pillows. You will also need a quiet, dimly lit space where you are warm and can experience complete stillness. In just 20 minutes a day your body will learn to calm itself more easily. Who doesn’t need that? I had tried these poses several times before bed and fell asleep. So I tried it earlier in the evening and I can’t tell you how quickly it changes your mental state. I slip into a meditative state where it seems I float in and out of consciousness. I also find that if I have a situation in my life that I am trying to figure out, the answers become very clear

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

during the quiet stillness. I hope you will google some free videos and try this yourself. You deserve to be restored. You may even solve a few mysteries. Namaste my friends! Lisa Payne writes about family-related topics. You can reach her at lisa@paynefam6.com.

Depot Museum

Chronicles the Community’s Experience with COVID-19 By Kristen Beckman

Just a few years after the original Broomfield Depot was built in 1909, an influenza pandemic spread around the world, affecting about 500 million people. One hundred years later, the world is again dealing with a global pandemic, and the Broomfield Depot Museum is chronicling how Broomfield residents are responding.

M

useum Coordinator David Allison said when the museum temporarily shut down last spring due to COVID-19, it tried to pivot and find ways to make good use of the time it had. That led to the Broomfield in the Time of COVID-19 project, which records the oral histories of Broomfield residents and collects artifacts related to the community’s response to the pandemic. Some of the recordings have been made into podcasts and one was turned into a re-enactment that depicted the experiences of a woman who lived through the 1919 pandemic. Allison said it has been interesting to see the similarities between both pandemics.

20

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

“Mask wearing is a great example,” said Allison. “There was a big push for people to wear masks during the influenza pandemic of 1919, but there were also many people who thought it wasn’t a good idea to wear masks. There was a push and pull and back and forth about whether it was safe to go out without masks or if they curtailed freedom too much. We hear those same conversations today. It’s interesting how history rhymes. It doesn’t necessarily repeat, but

you see some of the same themes emerge time after time in history.” Another similarity Alison noted is the desire people have to reach out and find ways to stay connected. One Broomfield resident shared a story about how she hosted socially distanced gatherings in her yard to allow neighbors and friends to continue gathering in a safe way. “That’s one thing we also see in history as well is that relationships are so valuable to keep us grounded and enthusiastic about our lives and positive in the face of difficulty,” said Allison. The museum is also collecting artifacts related to the pandemic, including a stimulus check letter signed by President Trump, painted rocks with encouraging messages, a City and County mask that says “Stronger Together,” and signs that were posted in businesses around town. The museum is also working on an exhibit that tells the story of how Broomfield became a city in the 1950s. Created as an ideal community halfway between Denver and Boulder, Broomfield created a glitzy advertising campaign to promote itself. The museum has already collected some fascinating objects and pictures from that time to include in the exhibit which is expected to debut later this year, said Allison. The Broomfield Depot, which served as both a railroad depot for the Colorado & Southern Railway and the home of the station agent, was moved to its current location in 1976 by a group of passionate citizens who did not want to see it torn down. The building was moved to what is now called Depot Hill and functions as a museum set up to look exactly how it did in the 1920s and 1930s. All of the artifacts and objects inside the depot are from that time period and restoration efforts even included scraping away layers of paint to find authentic color schemes. The museum is operated by the City and County of Broomfield and receives support from the Friends of Broomfield History (formerly the Friends of the Broomfield Depot Museum), which raises funding for the facility through grants and individual donations. Current hours are Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There was a big push for people to wear masks during the influenza pandemic of 1919, but there were also many people who thought it wasn’t a good idea to wear masks.

Making It Happen Schooling and Working from Home During the Pandemic By Bette Erickson

Did you know that if you whisper to Alexa, she whispers back? … Well, yes, while working from home many of us have gleaned new and useful (and not so useful) information.

A Broomfield friend, Rene Sanchez, said that one strategy she uses to aid her in keeping sane and productive while working 10- and sometimes 12-hour days at home, is to breathe deeply while reading trivia online. Such are the modernday challenges during this lengthy, ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID-19 has resulted in millions of employees working from home full time,” said Sanchez. “Yet, while many may view this as a short-term response to a crisis, many employees and supervisors, including me, may want to continue working from home, at least part-time.”

22

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

While working and learning from home creates a high degree of stress and anxiety, employers have numerous opportunities to support their employees, explained Lavigna. He shared the following tips.

Keys to Maintaining Engagement During the Pandemic: 1. Provide strong and visible leadership 2. Communicate, communicate, communicate 3. Don’t neglect training and development 4. Focus on the mission and the work 5. Appreciate and recognize 6. Set expectations and provide tools 7. Ask for feedback

That sentiment is shared by many, including students having to learn remotely at home. For 15-year-old Maddy Quinn it seems to be an appealing option, perhaps even when this pandemic is over. “Well, I like to both learn remotely and be at school,” the Broomfield High School sophomore explained. “Because I can be comfortable and be in my pajamas,” while learning and studying from home she said. So, what’s the secret to staying focused while both working from home and supervising your younger children who are learning remotely at home? Sanchez advised taking regular breaks from your own work to check on your child and assess how things are going. She explained, “Expect interruptions and unanticipated changes in your schedule. The shower will leak and the cat will get out and you’ll realize you’re out of quick and convenient lunch options — all in the same morning.” “A big deadline was suddenly moved up and our Wi-Fi mysteriously stopped working. What could I do?” She said she did some much-needed stretching, breathed deeply, and re-prioritized. “Hug your child and do the best you can.” Sanchez said, “Some days will be super challenging, but some days will be easier, too.” Bob Lavigna, a director with CPS HR Consulting, explained that moving to a remote work place and learning environment is not like flipping a binary switch. “It’s a difficult process, especially if there are kids at home making demands of parents,” he said. “It can be remarkably stressful for employees.” And COVID-19 has created a radically different work environment for thousands of employees, he added. Quinn noted, “I do have a choice to be at home or at school. Right now,

I am doing half and half - two days at home and the other two days in school.” And because she’s in high school, it’s not necessary for her parents to supervise or get overly-involved in her studies, she said. Equally, parents have numerous opportunities to support their students. Communication is paramount, Sanchez said. Not only with parental expectations, but with team members. “Discuss which tasks are expected, what the deadlines are, and which may need a collaborative effort. Be clear about your expectations and encourage suggestions from all stakeholders about how to make things go even more smoothly in the future. Learning or working from home or being on site, perhaps what we should all remember during this unprecedented time is to call on our inner, chill teenager. Like Quinn said, “I really don’t have a preference. I really like to do both.” Bette Erickson writes about people, places, and events. Contact her at bette_erickson@hotmail.com with your story ideas. Navigating COVID-19 Vaccinations Requires Diligent, Attentive Eye By Allison Eichner

Living in a digital age, we are accustomed to speed and ease when making appointments, online shopping, and reading the latest news. Although, for those trying to navigate a digital world of complex COVID-19 information, quite the opposite is true, specifically when it comes to the state’s distribution of COVID19 vaccinations. As of January 29, half of Broomfield residents aged 70+ had received their vaccines, but many were still struggling to know where to start.

With the added layer of constantly changing information and availability of vaccines, on top of electronic scheduling and sign-ups, the process can be confusing and overwhelming. Teryl Fabry, director of Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB), offered some guidance for both Broomfield seniors and family and caregivers of people 70+ who still need their vaccine. She answered a few of our questions.

Q: What advice do you have for caregivers or adult children of seniors who are trying to ensure that their older parents and loved ones get the vaccine?

Q: How is SRB helping Broomfield Seniors navigate the vaccine process?

Broomfield Health and Human Services advises residents to first reach out to their primary doctor to inquire about a vaccine. From there, they can fill out the Broomfield City and County vaccine interest form. To find the form, visit www.Broomfield.org and click on the COVID-19 Vaccination Information button on the home screen. From there, scroll down and click on the teal Vaccine Interest Form button. The Google form will ask for contact information as well as the distribution group.

A: SRB is doing our best to reach out to seniors that

don’t receive services from the city, because the city is already reaching out to those who receive services such as Meals on Wheels. When we come in touch with a senior that has questions, we direct them to Broomfield Senior Services to help them navigate through getting on the list for a vaccine.

Q: Most vaccine sign-ups and correspondence is digital, do you have any technology advice for seniors? A: A lot of seniors are able to follow the links and

24

fill out the information to get on the vaccine list. But, for those that need additional help whether it be because they have vision challenges or other restrictions, SRB can offer them assistance. We can help walk them through the process or refer them to Senior Services for additional help.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

A: We encourage caregivers to follow the links the city provides and fill out

the information for their family members to get them on the list as soon as possible. If they have Kaiser insurance we refer them to Kaiser to set up an appointment, or to get their vaccine through their particular insurance.

In order to help support our most vulnerable residents getting vaccinated, SRB is working closely with Broomfield Senior Services to help seniors or caregivers navigate the process. For help accessing the interest form or answering any other vaccine related questions, contact lclaxton@broomfield.org or seniorresourcesofbroomfield@gmail.com.

3 Margaritas Owner Joins Other Entrepreneurs to Help Workers Impacted by COVID

Chamba App Connects People with Jobs By Megan Mayes

The effects of the pandemic have been widespread, but few industries have felt the strain as deeply as restaurants. With a multitude of updated rules and restrictions, food service workers and business owners have had to take on a new level of flexibility. Despite the changes, one Broomfield restaurant owner decided to pursue the added challenge of helping employers and workers connect. Jesus Guitierez, owner of 3 Margaritas in Broomfield, joined a team of ambitious Colorado business owners to create the Chamba App. Their new service is helping people find jobs through accessible and easy-to-use technology.

The 3 Margaritas restaurant has become a Broomfield icon as the pretty pink building on the corner of Main and 120th. I have many fond memories of family meals in the restaurant with the beautifully painted tables and chairs. The endless warm tortilla chips and salsa are only surpassed by the sopapillas and giant birthday sombrero. Quality of service is Jesus’ primary goal as manager and owner, and with the help of his great staff they have maintained the highest standards even through COVID. Through the hardships of the pandemic, Jesus found himself reminded of the big hearts of Broomfield residents. The love of the community kept his team going, and this same

26

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

love is at the heart of his successful restaurant. He said, “To run a restaurant you really need to love what you do, and most of all love and care for your customers and team members. It needs to be natural, people will know when it is not.” Jesus’ big heart for his community led him to the Chamba App and a team of young Latino entrepreneurs. Their goal was to help the communities most affected by unemployment. They saw a need which was heightened by the pandemic, and Chamba has filled the need with an app that connects people who are looking for work with people who are looking for workers. At first, the team went looking for job vacancies which they would send to an email subscriber list.

Now, their streamlined app is available across the country to help people facing unemployment find decent jobs. The Chamba App team is proud to be the first job posting app available in Spanish, but the accomplishment did not come without challenges. The Chamba team worked to gain support from those who are often unaware of the unique difficulties the Latino community faces. Jesus describes the Latino community as “the backbone of many industries, especially hospitality industries.” This group felt the pain personally and took the test head on. Without many Latino start-ups and technology companies to look to for guidance, Jesus and the Chamba team have been blazing their own trails. They hope that their effort to help people find jobs inspires others to not give up, push when times get hard, and love the challenges that make us stronger. If you are unemployed and looking for work or looking for new staff for your business, visit the Chamba App at lachamba.app to download for iOS and Android. And next time you can, visit 3 Margaritas in Broomfield for a wonderful dining experience and thank Jesus for his dedication to our community.

Marshall

OFFERS VIEWS AND MORE By Bette Erickson

Whether you choose to go with someone or by yourself, Marshall Mesa in nearby south Boulder is a hiking, biking, equestrian or snowshoer’s Shangri-la.

30

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

H

ome to the first coal mining activity between 1860 and continuing through the 1930s, the town site that was once called Marshall provided coal for heating, railroads, and steam engines. Now the site offers visitors solitude punctuated with expansive Front Range views. At one time, Marshall had 900 residents and boasted three saloons. Several spots along the trail system offer historical markers with information regarding the settlement. To begin this outing, start from the Marshall Mesa trailhead, following the Marshall Valley Trail east (left) for just less than a mile as it leads you to Community Ditch, crisscrossing another lower irrigation ditch on the way. Next turn west (right), crossing a wooden footbridge and climbing some log steps. Follow the Community Ditch path about a mile to the junction of Greenbelt Plateau. After you veer left, accessing the Greenbelt Plateau route, you`ll encounter the steepest part of the trail — although it really is just a gentle slope — leading you to the top of Marshall Mesa and a vast prairie. Follow the quiet path for about another 1½ miles, enjoying the scenery,

Mesa

To the Trailhead: From Broomfield, take US 36 west to McCaslin Blvd. in Louisville. Turn left (south), and then turn right toward the Superior Marketplace. Follow Marshall Rd. past Costco, continuing west. Just before the stoplight (CO 93), drive up a slight incline on your left to the Marshall Mesa trailhead parking area. Distance: Varies depending on

eventually ending at the Greenbelt Plateau Trailhead that is two miles east of south Broadway on Colo. 128. This now-quiet area of old Marshall housed several coal mines called Black Diamond, Eagle, High View, Pine Cliff, Rocky Flats, and mine No. 3. The Greenbelt Plateau was once a part of the main route from Boulder to Golden. Because of an incredible unobstructed view, the mountains to the west along the Front Range stand tall and seemingly daunting. The route described here is a pretty easy outing, popular with casual visitors. Enjoy the quiet trail system before returning the way you came.

Relieve Anxiety of Bathing Suit Season by

Eating By Lisa Payne

Every year when March rolls around, I start to feel a little anxious that spring break is approaching and I might have to get in a swimsuit. But only a tiny bit anxious. I’ve never been one to say no to food, or no to anything that makes me happy for that matter. I can justify just about anything. I’ve even been known to get up at 5:00 a.m. and drive to the gym just to sit in the parking lot drinking my coffee and listening to music because that felt much better than actually going inside the gym. And I never feel guilty about these decisions either.

Before I had kids, I was really good about early morning workouts. And then after the first early morning snuggle with a newborn baby I was hooked on THAT feeling. I swore I would never miss those moments as long as my kids would get up and snuggle with me. My youngest is now nine but he will still get up and find me waiting anxiously on the couch, arms wide open. It starts my day with a full heart. But back to getting in a swimsuit. This is still an annual reality. But then I struck gold when I came across an article in

32

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

my Yoga magazine that talked about foods that reduce anxiety. Bingo! I can calm my anxiety about getting in a swimsuit by eating. That speaks to me. Here are the top 12 foods to reduce anxiety and how I interpreted them: walnuts (in muffins), turmeric (in my golden milk latte), dark leafy greens (creamed kale anyone?), wild salmon/tuna/sardines (love all three), avocado (toast!), olive oil (drizzle on avocado toast), coconut oil (in baking), broccoli (roasted with balsamic glaze), broccoli sprouts (haven’t tried yet), cacao (recipe below!), strawberries (dipped in chocolate) and oranges (fresh squeezed juice or whole slices). I actually like all of these foods! I am in luck and plan to have zero anxiety come swimsuit season because I will be incorporating all of these foods. Here is a recipe from “Anxiety-Free Food” by Liana Werner-Gray that will make you feel just as good about yourself no matter if you worked out or not. Enjoy!

Good Pet Nutrition Requires Understanding of Products, Ingredients By Megan Mayes

T

here always seems to be a new fad diet for us to try, with claims that it will change our lives and our waistlines. But it’s important to know the actual facts about your new diet so you don’t get caught up in the hype without understanding it. We should give these same considerations to the diets of our pets. With a little bit of knowledge on our side, we can provide our furry loved ones with balanced nutrition that will benefit them through their lifetime. Rachel Carpentier from Willow Run Feed and Supply gave me a few tips for picking out quality food, but always consult your veterinarian for expert advice specific to your pet. There is an unending debate on whether grains should be included in dog and cat food. Some people think pets should be on grain free or high protein diets to mimic their ancestors, while other pet owners cite recent studies that say grain free diets are linked to heart disease. It is important that no matter what type of diet or brand of food you choose, you make sure your pet is getting all of their essential nutrients in a balanced way. These nutrients are water, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, and they are needed for all of the regular functions of your pet’s body. Rachel recommends looking at the ingredients list of the food you select to make sure that meat is the first ingredient.

34

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2021

If you are not choosing a grain free option, make sure to avoid any foods that have corn or by-product meal on the list of ingredients. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, you should always buy the best food that your budget will allow. You might not see the difference in the ingredient list because the difference is actually in the quality and source of the ingredients. Your pet’s food should also change throughout their life to reflect their current health levels. Some things to consider that might prompt a diet change are age and allergies. My puppy Freddy recently started itching himself obsessively. As it continued, I would help him scratch and check for bugs, but nothing seemed to be wrong. After a quick visit with his vet, I found out Freddy probably has allergies related to his food. Now we are experimenting with new brands to find a good fit. The timing was perfect because we were also ready to transition from puppy food to adult dog food. Rachel shared

with me that young and active dogs need foods with higher protein and fat. Transitioning to a lower calorie adult food when growth has stopped prevents unnecessary weight gain in adult pets. Another area of feeding that requires attention and care is treating. It is so much fun to give our pets treats and snacks, but their ingredients and calories need to be considered as a part of the whole diet plan. Rachel said, “Look for treats that are low calorie and have minimal preservatives.” This is especially important if you are treating often for training exercises. Be sure to visit Willow Run Feed and Supply in Broomfield for a large variety of high quality pet foods.
