Birds of Prey Foundation Provides a Second Chance for Sick and Injured Raptors

Last April, an injured Golden Eagle got a second chance at freedom thanks to the work of a Broomfield organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned wildlife. The eagle was suffering nerve damage in one of her legs that prevented her from opening her foot or using it in any way, including to hunt, which left her starving.

FROM THE

EDITOR Events are Back The turning of the calendar from February to March brought a worldwide collective sigh. Two years. Two years since our lives were unequivocally altered by “unprecedented” events. In that time, volumes have been written and stated about the changes to the way we live and interact and relate to each other due to the pandemic. And there are many, many feelings. A lot of those feelings are tied to what we missed. Celebrations. Gatherings. Meetings. Travels. Connecting with someone in their final days. Some of what we missed may seem trivial in hindsight, but some of it is quite profound and irreplicable. In the first months of the pandemic, we navigated re-planning what would become known as a “covid wedding” for our daughter. A wedding that looked nothing like the event she dreamed about or we originally paid for, but somehow ended up being quite special and beautiful despite its dramatic alterations. That same daughter, like millions of other young people around the world, had a virtual college commencement that same spring of 2020. What? Our family gathered around the television with balloons and drinks and toasted the achievement, but there was no way to fill the hollow feeling of this stolen momentous event. Generations to come will hear stories of what happened – and what didn’t happen – during the pandemic. Our other daughter graduates from college this Spring and I am so glad that she will get the chance to walk across the stage, turn the tassel, and smile for the camera. A simple ritual no longer taken for granted. I am thinking about these things as I write this in late February and masks have been shed, and doors have been opened, and life is beginning to truly feel normal again. A new dress is hanging in my closet to wear to the Bal Swan Ball and I am excited to attend in person as it has been a tradition for me and my husband for nearly two decades, back since our girls were young students at Bal Swan. As you page through this issue you will see numerous local events coming in March, April, and beyond. Gathering is a primary way that many of our non-profits raise funds – so thank goodness they can do it again! And so, I ask you to keep it in mind. We will all be fully emerging in the coming weeks and re-engaging with life and each other and our community. The Broomfield community persevered in numerous ways during the pandemic, and our community was there for us. What can we give back to her now? Let’s show up again for our non-profits. Thanks for reading and happy almost spring,

Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

INSPIRATIO N FO R

BUSY FAMILIES

Say Goodbye to By Lisa Payne

In an attempt to continue breathing into the new year and to keep my mental health in check, I want to talk about envy, jealousy, and how to feel happier by letting them go. Envy may be a deadly sin, but it is a very real and normal feeling that everyone experiences. It is a feeling that is almost always between two people, with you wanting what someone else has (think money, material possessions, professional success etc.) Jealousy, on the other hand, is typically between three people. Those three people being you, someone you love, and a third person who you feel is threatening the relationship. This could be an affair, a friend who comes between an existing close friendship, or even between siblings if they feel a parent favors one child over the other. I remember my earliest feelings of envy as a child. My school district was very wealthy, even though I didn’t grow up that way. I would go to certain friends’ houses and be shocked by the size of the home and the cars they drove. I bet I made my parents crazy, constantly asking if we could buy a bigger house and designer clothes and convertible cars. As a child you don’t think about how that makes your parents feel. Always wishing for more than you have. I have a lot of guilt around those expressions of unhappiness now that I am a parent! I also remember my first feelings of jealousy. There were little zings in elementary school if I felt like a friend liked the new girl better. Or in middle school if someone else liked the boy I had a crush on. The biggest and most significant

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2022

feeling of jealousy that I remember to this day is two of my best friends graduated from college before me and got an apartment together. I felt so crushed, left out, and jealous. When I look back, I know they didn’t live together to spite me, to leave me out or for any other negative reason. They simply had graduated and needed a place to live and I wasn’t available. But the FOMO! I truly can’t imagine how kids today deal with these feelings. Social media has brought envy and jealousy to a whole new level. How can we tame envious emotions so that our hearts can feel happy? We can have an abundance mindset. Instead of thinking “they have it better than me and there isn’t enough left for me,” turn it into “I am so proud of them, I am going to try and achieve that kind of success too.” We tend to avoid people we feel envy toward because we feel bad about ourselves when around them. We see them as our source of resentment. But instead, get closer to them! Ask them how they achieved their success and use them as a mentor. Aim to direct these feelings towards motivation to better yourself and make positive changes in your life. And if you suspect you are the object of someone else’s envy and they are rude to you, try to remember this. Something about your life is triggering their wounds and making them feel insecure. Set aside your defense and ego, and treat them with compassion, humility, and grace. Something the whole world could use more of right now.

Coverwell Window Well Covers Let Sunshine In, Keep Animals Out By Kristen Beckman

Window well covers are an important home safety feature designed to keep people and animals from falling into egress window areas in below-grade dwelling spaces. They also help keep out debris as well as prevent water and snow from collecting inside window wells that could lead to interior damage.

But finding a cover that works with a specific window well can be challenging. That’s why Denver-based Coverwell Solutions set out to provide custom-made window well covers to accommodate any window well shape or configuration, including windows that extend over the top of the well, windows that swing into the well, and window wells made of metal, concrete, plastic, fiberglass, wood or stone. Coverwell Solutions was founded in 2009 by Mark and Sandra Bay. The company started out as a manufacturer of window well covers for the wholesale market, selling to window well installers and basement renovation companies in Denver as well as in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. At the time, the company’s small staff of four included Mark, Sandra, and two other employees. As the Bays analyzed Coverwell’s production process, they decided it needed some automation. They purchased a computer numerical control (CNC) router; a computer-controlled cutting machine that allowed them to target the retail market for custom window well covers. Since then, the company has grown to 12 full-time employees, including a full-time salesman and two full-time installers. Coverwell Solutions manufactures more than 20,000 window well covers each year and services markets in Colorado from Fort

16

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2022

Collins to Castle Rock. Its products include low-profile covers that sit flush with the top of the window well, legacy covers that are hinged to the home and extend out and above the window well, and custom covers to accommodate other configurations. While keeping people, pets, and debris out of window wells, Coverwell’s products also let in Colorado’s abundant sunlight. The covers are made of polycarbonate, a virtually unbreakable plastic that is impervious to heavy snow, hail, and rain. A UV coating on the cover prevents it from yellowing, and a custom aluminum support system is strong enough to support 800 lbs. and unlike steel, will not rust. Coverwell covers eliminate the need to periodically clean window wells protected by steel grates and prevent the unwanted surprise of finding a skunk or other wildlife trapped in a window well. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has recently reported rescuing a mule deer buck in Colorado Springs and a moose in Breckenridge, both of which had fallen into window wells. Uncovered window wells are a threat to wildlife, said the agency. Coverwell provides free estimates and a short installation lead time of typically two weeks or less. It prides itself on being a budgetfriendly option for homeowners, pricing each cover individually according to size, style, and options, and even allowing customers to do their own installation. Because the products are built locally, no additional shipping costs are built into the price. For more information, visit www.coverwell.com or call 303-425-8818.

Provides Community-Focused Resources for People with Developmental Disabilities By Megan Mayes

N

early 60 years ago, a group of Boulder parents was looking for ways to get their children the resources they needed to be successful community members. While we may consider children to be some of the most well-supported people in our communities, this was not always the case for children with developmental disabilities living in Boulder and Broomfield counties. A growing need was the founding principle for Imagine!: an organization that provides services to people with developmental, cognitive, and physical challenges to help them incorporate into our shared community at every stage of their lives.

18

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2022

Fred Hobbs, the Director of Public Relations at Imagine!, described the group’s mission as “believing in the potential of all people and helping to facilitate the inalienable right to be part of the community.” They do this by providing supportive services and connecting participants with other local service providers. Imagine! services are available to people of all ages to help them and their families through every stage of life. Babies, infants, and toddlers have access to Early Intervention programs. School age children can participate in programs like after school programs, summer camp, and occupational therapy. Fred laughed while describing kids’ occupational therapy, saying “Normally we think of occupation as meaning job, but their job is to be a kid. So the therapy helps them physically do child activities.” Adult-centered services are focused on community engagement and self-reliance. A major component of this initiative is the Supported Employment program, in which individuals with developmental disabilities are trained by Imagine! employees to become part of the local workforce. Many local businesses have partnered with the program over the last thirty years, building quality employee relationships, a diversified workforce, and hardworking and reliable employees. Some of these businesses include Home Depot, IHOP, and Walgreens. Not only does Imagine! provide services for people with disabilities, but they also serve as a connection between those in need and other quality service providers. Fred described the Imagine! service selection process as entirely client-focused. “Our care coordinators are provider-neutral and do not receive any incentive to direct people to Imagine! services, so they truly help find what is going to be best for each individual.” Other local providers can help give people the best and most personalized support, such as FRIENDS of Broomfield, and Imagine! is happy to help make these types of connections. Imagine! had a significant impact on Boulder and Broomfield counties in 2021. The 672 employees and 432 service providers were able to help 4,291 community members with disabilities. This important work is made possible through grants, Medicaid, and the contributions of neighbors and friends to the Imagine! Foundation. If you are interested in becoming a client, volunteer, employee, or business partner, visit imaginecolorado.org to learn more.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities can and do contribute to their communities every day in ways big and small.

Imagine! is creating a world of opportunity for all abilities.

Celebrate

The Beauty of Inclusion THROUGH MUSIC AT BAL SWAN EVENT By Missy Ruzicka

A very special event is coming in March and 100% of the proceeds are going to Broomfield’s own very special Bal Swan Children’s Center. As its inaugural event, Ensemble Charité will hold a Springtime in Broomfield concert, celebrating the beauty of inclusion, and conducted by the amazing three-time Grammy winning American Vocalist Michelle DeYoung.

I’m always amazed by the talented diverse people that call Broomfield home. One of those talents is Michelle DeYoung, a mezzo-soprano who has performed with orchestras and opera houses all over the world. She is also the Executive Director for Ensemble Charité, which is a new non-profit organization that brings musicians and charities together to better communities. They aspire to have benefit concerts all over the world with professional and pre-professional musicians coming together in their cities for chosen charities. The performances are funded by donations so 100% of proceeds go directly to the charity. The ensembles range from full chamber orchestras and string quartets, to string chamber orchestras. Springtime in Broomfield will be a strings concert featuring Michelle DeYoung singing and conducting players from professional orchestras including the Colorado Symphony along with aspiring, promising young musicians, all to benefit Bal Swan Children’s Center. Bal Swan was chosen to be Emsemble Charité’s first concert because Michelle believes in the school’s mission, and the school is honored to be the recipient of the generous program. Since opening its doors in 1963, Bal Swan has provided an inclusive welcoming environment to thousands of local preschoolers. The Center provides early intervention therapies along with the highest quality curriculum, promoting individual learning that’s tailored to a diverse student population. Bal Swan has hosted wonderful events over the years like golf tournaments, movie nights in the park and of course the Bal Swan Ball, which is Broomfield’s oldest black-tie event. This year was their 58th annual ball at which Michelle DeYoung performed along with comedian Sam Adams. To have people in your community see what you offer is important and vital to so many others is very special and to have Ensemble Charité choose Bal Swan for this event is going to be something truly amazing. Please join Bal Swan Children’s Center for a wonderful night of music, performed by some of the amazing talents of local musicians along with Grammy award winning singer and conductor Michelle DeYoung at the Broomfield Auditorium on March 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Broomfield Kiwanis Club

Focuses on Improving Childrens’ Lives By Megan Mayes

Kiwanis is an international organization dedicated to improving the lives of children through community clubs. Members working through local chapters collectively create global change, with 150,000 service projects completed each year to fight childhood hunger, improve literacy, and offer guidance. Our local Kiwanis chapter is no exception, and the volunteer members in our community hold Broomfield kids close to their hearts.

22

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2022

The Kiwanis Club of Broomfield North Metro, chartered in 2018, wants to help children in Broomfield and around the globe by making our world a better place to thrive. Group members from Broomfield, Adams, and Boulder counties come together regularly to complete unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives. Kirsten Gromko, the President of the Broomfield chapter, got started with Kiwanis because she has always believed in giving back to the community. Her neighbors were members and they introduced her to the club. The chapter was formed four years ago when 18 women with a passion for giving saw a need for Kiwanis in our local kids. She describes their purpose as, “we want to make a difference in the lives of children, specifically foster children in Broomfield and the surrounding areas.” Broomfield Kiwanis has 27 members from across the metro area, but frequently has double or triple that number in volunteers when working on projects. Kirsten said, “Right now we are a small but mighty crew. It is a super easy club to belong to if you are passionate about doing good in

your community and just want to show up with small time commitments.” Anyone and everyone can be a good fit for the Kiwanis club. This club meets on the third Monday each month to plan and execute service projects, from volunteering to fundraising. One of their recent projects was Packs of Hope, which provides a backpack of clothes, books, and toys for children who are entering the foster care system. They are currently organizing volunteers to be mentors for teens and young adults exiting the foster care system and moving into the Anchor House. Members also organize several fundraising events throughout the year through their foundation, which was chartered in 2020. They use the money raised to fund their signature project for the year, which in 2021 was furnishing apartments in the Anchor House. This coming June, Broomfield Kiwanis will be hosting their second annual Kids Need Kiwanis

Golf Tournament fundraiser. It will take place at The Ranch Country Club on June 6, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. If you are interested in joining The Kiwanis Club of Broomfield North Metro, you can find more information at 19597.site.kiwanis.org or Broomfield North-Metro Kiwanis Club on Facebook. From there, you can subscribe to their newsletter for updates and their schedule of events. This year, their goal is to strengthen and grow their club, and you can help by becoming a member and participating in their efforts to enhance the lives of Broomfield children! BIRDS OF PREY F O U N D A T I O N PROVIDES A SECOND CHANCE FOR SICK AND INJURED RAPTORS By Kristen Beckman

U

nder the care of the Birds of Prey Foundation, the eagle was fitted with a brace to hold her foot open, which helped her start to use her leg and foot again. She was eventually released back into the wild fully healthy and is now part of a study to track the survival of Golden Eagles after rehabilitation. This eagle was one of 738 animals admitted to the Birds of Prey Foundation last year. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has treated more than 16,000 birds since it was founded in 1980. Sigrid Ueblacker founded the Birds of Prey Foundation after her daughter Elke brought her an orphaned starling, the first of several neighborhood birds Ueblacker would care for. After receiving a rehabilitation permit from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Ueblacker began caring for dozens of birds in her home and backyard. In 1984, the rescue and

rehabilitation operation moved to a parcel of land on Rock Creek Farm. Today, the foundation cares primarily for raptors from all over Colorado and neighboring states, including hawks, falcons, and owls, as well as vultures, pelicans, and ravens. Many of the foundation’s patients come in with broken bones, concussions or damage to their eyes, ears or feathers, and most of those injuries are a result of accidental or intentional human interference, said Andrea Lutz, Birds of Prey Foundation educational coordinator. Collisions with cars, windows, barbed wire, and power lines are common causes of injury, and some birds come in with diseases or after being shot or poisoned. In some cases, young birds have been taken from their nest and have severe nutritional deficiencies. The foundation provides round-the-clock care and maintains large flight areas to give sick and injured birds a second chance at freedom. Its intensive care unit offers a full suite of diagnostic equipment, and it has a full surgical suite complete with anesthesia and several incubators that provide heat and oxygen to critical patients. There are several ways to help the foundation, including donating items from its wishlist or funds for food, shelter, and medical care. The foundation also allows people to adopt a species or educational ambassador and receive a certificate.

Visit www.birds-of-prey.org for more information WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN INJURED BIRD OF PREY It is legal to capture and transport a raptor in order to get care for it, however it is illegal to keep it. The Birds of Prey Foundation has permits from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to possess and care for migratory birds. If you find an injured bird of prey, call the foundation at 303-460-0674 and be prepared to answer some basic questions, including where the bird is, why you think the bird needs help, and whether it has any visible injuries. Rescuers might also want to know if the bird is moving and how close it will allow you to get to it. If possible, providing a picture of the bird can help them evaluate the situation. A VISIT TO

Paint Mines Interpretive Park NEAR COLORADO SPRINGS DOESN’T DISAPPOINT By Bette Erickson

The outing to Paint Mines Interpretive Park in El Paso County was on a Tuesday. For you, that is the day after Monday. For me, it was a day that, like the other six, brimmed with the potential for mystery, adventure, and awe. It was a couple months ago that my friend and I found ourselves in Colorado Springs for a mini-staycation. Always on the lookout for great parks or interesting hikes, we located the Paint Mines Interpretive Park, venturing out for a morning of exploration and hiking.

28

To the trailhead: TO GET THERE: Go south on I-25, taking Hwy. 24 east from Colorado Springs to Calhan, turning south on Yoder Road/Calhan Highway. Turn east on Paint Mines Rd. and look for a couple designated parking areas on the left. DISTANCE: Varies, but there are about 3.7 miles of intersecting trails throughout the area. DIFFICULTY: Easy ELEVATION GAIN: Negligible DOGS: No, dogs are not allowed because of the fragile ecosystem. COST: The park is free to enter and open from sunrise to sunset. Photo by Bette Erickson

Several signs and a large kiosk greet visitors to Paint Mines Interpretive Park near Colorado Springs. Photo by Bette Erickson

One of only about a dozen hoodoo rock formations found in the world, the quiet park offers views of Pikes Peak, with native Buffalo Grass, and wildlife such as pronghorn antelope, horned lizards, Lark Bunting, and more. Parking at the large trailhead, my friend and I read the informational kiosk, snapped a picture of the routes, and set out to explore. We chose not to follow any particular route, instead we meandered in and around the rock formations, being careful to stay on established footpaths. We were not disappointed.

Detailed information indicates that the rocks at Paint Mines are made up of interlayered shale and clay with embedded selenite (gypsum) and jasper, heavily stained by iron oxide and topped by a more resistant layer of cross-bedded sandstone, which forms the white caprocks on some of the hoodoos. Be on the lookout for colors like salmon, pink, pale greens, and more layered on the rocks. The rocks stand sentinel, grounded in truth, as if proud in their beauty and goodwill. We’re told that early settlers to the area may have used the colored clay from these rocks for various reasons. Expect to drive by some old bawdy houses, souvenir shops, and cafes en route to Paint Mines Interpretive Park. Add Paint Mines to your list of places to visit, if not to saunter around the hoodoos, then simply to swing by to capture a couple of photos of the peculiar painted rocks jutting up from the dusty landscape. A public facility outhouse and informational kiosk are located at the first trailhead on the left. Bette Erickson writes about people, places, and events. Contact her at bette_erickson@hotmail.com. TRANSITIONS: BROOMFIELD’S NEW POLICE CHIEF IS A FAMILIAR FACE, A TRUSTED LEADER By Bette Erickson

Without a doubt, many of us in the community would say what we value most is to feel safe and respected. Broomfield’s new chief of police, Enea Hempelmann, understands that. “I always try to be respectful; to treat people how I would want to be treated,” she explained when asked what has been an important career-long priority for her. With little fanfare, but New Broomfield Police Chief much excitement, Broomfield Enea Hempelmann. welcomed its first woman Courtesy photo. Chief of Police mid-January with the appointment of longtime Broomfield City and County law enforcement officer Enea Hempelmann. Having most recently served as Deputy Chief of Operations, Ms. Hempelmann has been with the department for nearly 25 years as an officer, detective, and detective sergeant. She has strong connections to the community and has earned support throughout the police department staff. Born in Italy, Ms. Hempelmann spent time traveling to and from Italy to the United States as a youngster with her family, settling in Arvada when she was eight years old. She later graduated from Arvada High School and Metropolitan State College. She says it’s her family that has kept her grounded and helped most prepare her for this next step in her career. This includes her

mother and father, husband, and three daughters. “With overwhelming support from the community and the Broomfield Police Department team, it’s clear Ms. Hempelmann has the skills, vision, and leadership to propel Broomfield into this new era of policing within our community,” City and County Manager Jennifer Hoffman said in a statement. “Ms. Hempelmann’s position will be pivotal for our future as we remain a community committed to public safety, and continue to build a culture of compassion, inclusivity, and equity.” Policing is a hard job, often made more complicated when others fail to recognize that the person behind the badge is someone’s mother, father, son or daughter, brother or sister. Like all other professions and personnel, our uniformed neighbors need to be offered grace. During a community forum that included finalists Clint Nichols, the Commerce City police chief, and Mike Phibbs, the Auraria Campus police chief, Ms. Hempelmann discussed the need to seek community engagement, including the importance of community feedback. “I care about what this community thinks and I want to know if there’s something this police department needs to do differently, if it’s not meeting the standard for our community,” Hempelmann explained. “The community sets the expectation of the police department, and that’s why this police department does so well, because it reflects the community.” Ms. Hempelmann said she is looking forward to continuing the longstanding positive culture that our Broomfield Police Department has in place. Just weeks following Ms. Hempelmann’s appointment, Tom Deland, who served the department for 37 years, 23 years as Chief of Police, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on February 1, 2022, leaving his wife, Linda, and son and daughter Joey and

Michelle, and an entire community mourning. “Our hearts are broken at the Police Department and across the city and county as we work to process this loss,” Chief Hempelmann said in a statement. “Chief Deland’s leadership impacted me personally, and so many of us, and his legacy will remain deeply-rooted in our department for years to come.” To be sure, Mr. Deland set a high standard for policing in the community. Broomfield stated in a news-release that Ms. Hempelmann was the top-rated candidate in each forum and community panel conducted. Anyone who is fortunate enough to spend time chatting with her will readily understand why she was the top-rated finalist. In her spare time Chief Hempelmann likes to spend time with her family, travel and “ … cook anything Italian.” She said that her Italian mother is an excellent cook and taught her well, including copying recipes simply from intuition and taste, with no need for printed instructions. Previous Broomfield Police Chief Gary Creager announced his retirement last spring, having served in the role since 2014. Mr. Creager successfully ends a 40-year career in Colorado law enforcement.

EVACUATION PREPARATION:

How to Prepare, Protect, and Recover When Disaster Strikes

By Kristen Beckman

If you only had moments to choose what was most important to you during an evacuation, what would you take with you? This is a question many of our neighbors faced on December 30 when the Marshall Fire ripped through suburban neighborhoods without warning. Many homeowners were forced to flee their homes with only the clothes they were wearing, and if they were lucky, their pets and one or two items of value. In Colorado, we are accustomed to wildfires, but those of us who dwell in neighborhoods rather than forested environs, don’t typically expect to have to evacuate the path of a wildfire at a moment’s notice. The Marshall Fire

34

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | March 2022

taught us that disasters can happen anywhere and without warning. That doesn’t mean we should live in fear of the unexpected, but rather that we should prepare as best we can for a disaster. One of the best ways to do that is to create a family disaster and emergency plan, including assembling an evacuation kit. The Residents’ Preparedness Guide, updated by the Broomfield Emergency Management department last year, includes advice and checklists that can help. The plan recommends creating three 72-hour preparedness kits: a home kit

if you need to shelter-in-place, a car kit that stays in your car at all times in case of evacuation, and a go-kit that complements the other two kits. Your home kit might include items like flashlights, candles, food and water, while your car kit might include a blanket, warm clothes, a flashlight, and water. Your go kit should include copies of important documents, including insurance information and emergency phone numbers. Water, snacks, a change of clothes, a small supply of prescription medications, a phone charger, and pen and paper should also be included.

When preparing for an evacuation, don’t forget to create an emergency kit for your pets. The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) recommends preparing a go-bag that includes a leash, collar with ID tags, pet food, a few toys, a blanket or a bed, any prescription or pertinent medical information, and contact information for your pet’s veterinarian. HSBV offers free emergency pet boarding and pet care as well as food supplies to anyone in need due to a disaster. Before disaster strikes, make sure you will receive emergency alerts about impending situations. In Broomfield, sign up for emergency alerts on your cellular phone at your911.net and download the CodeRED app on your phone to ensure you are notified of any impending disasters or evacuations. Follow the City and County of Broomfield and Broomfield Police Department on Facebook and Twitter as social media is now being used to provide information directly to the public as situations evolve.

You might also consider creating an inventory of high-value items in your home, including photos and receipts, to help with insurance claims after a disaster. Secure important documents, such as insurance information, Social Security cards, property titles, and birth certificates in a fire-proof safe. Pictures and cherished keepsakes are often among the items lost to fire, flooding or other disasters that people most regret not being able to save. Photos taken in recent years with a smartphone are likely backed up in the cloud, but what about your wedding album or that box of photos from years ago? Consider scanning printed photos that are important to you and storing them digitally, and group precious memories like children’s school projects, photo albums, journals and home movies together in a plastic bin that can easily be grabbed during an emergency.

PREPARES FOR

Inaugural PULSE Event at Flatirons Mall, March 31 Quarterly Event will Foster Local Creative Collaboration By Allison Eichner

As Broomfield continues to grow, community leaders have continually asked what it means for our city to thrive. Creative Broomfield seeks to answer this question through their new quarterly PULSE Events. Designed to discuss the heartbeat of Broomfield creatives, PULSE is a space for people from all sectors of the community to come together. Each meeting will feature select speakers, a short performance, and an activity to foster relationships and share creative visions. A free to attend event, PULSE is for any community member with an interest in the arts.

In

the past year, Creative Broomfield has held Creative Conversations: an opportunity for creative people to share their work and collaborate as a community. Now, PULSE is an environment for people from diverse fields, not just creatives, to collaborate. With the inclusion of businesses, government, non-profit organizations, and educators in the creative conversations, all sectors of our community can thrive. Arts and history manager for the City of Broomfield, Megan Gilby, explained, “A connected and collaborative creative community is a key element of Broomfield’s comprehensive approach to growing the creative economy to increase the overall vitality of Broomfield and quality of life for residents.” This cross-sector collaboration will allow for community leaders to find a common pulse among their goals for Broomfield. The first PULSE Event will take place on Thursday, March 31, in Nordstrom Hall at Flatirons Crossing. The inaugural gathering will feature speakers from the location host, Flatirons Crossing. Expect to hear how the Flatirons team has “infused the arts and creative experiences into the mall experience, and are excited about partnering with creatives in their space.” Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance will perform at the event; in addition, their team will also share their creative story with attendees. From there, attendees will participate in an activity that mimics the Creative

Conversations hosted last year. This will be a time for people to discover collective strengths, network, and collaborate. PULSE is an event created for every corner of our town. The success of many existing organizations individually can not compare to when they come together. Creative Broomfield’s goal for this budding community is “to provide programs and opportunities that elevate our local creative resources, connect them together, and help build a strong community fabric. The ultimate goal is for this fabric to create a foundation for stability, sustainability, and innovation for the creative sector to share knowledge, resources, and ideas.” Megan also added, “We believe creativity plays a role in daily life, and by connecting those who are part of what many think of as the ‘traditional’ creative sector—like arts organizations and artists, with those who support, participate in or are creative in various sectors— we can build a creative network and creative economy that helps Broomfield connect, create, and thrive.” PULSE is a quarterly event held by Creative Broomfield and hosted at rotating locations. The inaugural event will take place on Thursday, March 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m in Nordstrom Hall at Flatirons Crossing. The event is free to attend and includes lunch. Outstanding Quality and Patient Safety, Right Here at Home Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital is proud to be nationally recognized with a Leapfrog Top Hospital Award for Quality and Safety. Avista was among 2,200 hospitals nationwide to be considered for the award but only one of 149 to be selected. The award was announced just before the historic Marshall Fire devastated neighborhoods in Louisville and Superior and nearly reached the hospital. Caregivers safely evacuated 51 patients, and cleanup crews spent the next 19 days methodically cleaning every square inch of the building and its equipment. Avista is once again open to all – safe, immaculately clean and ready to serve our communities – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Our caregivers are always focused on delivering high-quality, whole person care while ensuring a culture of Safety First, People Always,” said Isaac Sendros, Chief Executive Officer at Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital. “This was true before the Marshall Fire tested our resolve, and it is even more important now, as we have returned stronger to serve as the light and hope for our communities once again.”

Our caregivers are always focused on delivering high-quality, whole person care while ensuring a culture of Safety First, People Always

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The award is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization recognized as a standardsetter for health care safety and quality. The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in when selecting annual winners for the Top Hospital award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and more.
