Broomfield’s Open Space:

A Community Treasure That Almost Didn’t Exist Nearly three decades ago, a question on Broomfield’s ballot sought to create a sales and use tax to help fund the purchase of land for open space. It failed by just a handful of votes. A year later, in 1994, a core group of dedicated citizens re-launched the effort to get the issue passed.

FROM THE

EDITOR

Born on the First of July! Yep. That’s the birthday of Our Broomfield™ Magazine. Well -- that is when we started publishing. July 1, 2020.

There is a lot to celebrate. Indeed, you can feel the excitement in the air as 4th of July preparations begin around town. People are gathering again and community fun is back! If you want to know all about Broomfield’s Great American Picnic and 4th of July Celebration, you can find details on page 10. See you at the Broomfield Commons! The 4th always brings back one of my earliest and fondest Broomfield memories. The year was 1976 - Colorado’s Centennial. I was six years old. Broomfield Days was held on the 4th of July that year (at least that is my memory) and the parade was grander than grand! U.S. flags flew from each lightpost on Midway Blvd. and my family had a great vantage point for the parade. We were directly in front of the Fire Station! I remember the heat, tamed by the sweet drippy snow cone in my hand, and standing proudly in the sun next to my little sister. We had matching red, white, and blue halter tops and coordinating yarn ribbons in our long, high ponytails (we were not twins but we always matched). We were waiting for our older brother to march down the street playing clarinet with the Kohl Elementary Marching Band. My sister and I stood happily in that glorious sun (what do little kids know?) with our parents; my poor mother, nearly 9 months pregnant with our son-to-be-born baby brother. I can feel the emotions like it was yesterday. Family love, joy, excitement, patriotism, and community pride! How quickly this first year of Our Broomfield™ Magazine has passed. One year ago in the height of the pandemic, my husband and I launched a new business and this magazine. We have had a lot of support, including our daughters and my parents and an incredible staff. We began with hope and elbow grease and confidence in the support of our lifelong community. So far, so good! Our Broomfield™ Magazine is about creating community connections and awareness and visibility, each month expanding the web of community in this place by bringing local stories to your mailbox and helping you stay connected to the people and groups that matter most to you. I MUST thank each and every advertiser who took the leap and committed to support this new publication. We are here because of them! Please consider shopping local and thank you for checking out the businesses in these pages. We look forward to the road ahead and another year of bringing you great local content. Thank you for continuing the journey with us! And thanks for reading,

Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

Celebrating One Year Thank You for Your Support!

All of us on the Our Broomfield™ team would like to thank you, our business partners, community supporters, and Broomfield readers for your support in our first year in business! This month we celebrate our first anniversary and we extend our appreciation. Hopefully it shows through in every page of every issue - that we love Broomfield - and creating a monthly magazine by, for, and about the businesses, organizations, and people of our great city is our singular goal.

Our Broomfield is a magazine for all of us because it’s our community. It’s Our Broomfield.

BUSY FAMILIES

INNER BEAUTY NEVER FADES By Lisa Payne

We recently watched the movie Shallow Hal with our kids. The last time I saw that movie was many years ago and I didn’t really remember most of it. But watching it this time with the younger viewers was surprisingly uncomfortable. Not only did our kids feel extremely sorry for the people who weren’t cookie cutter beautiful, but they had a hard time watching how most of it played out and kept wanting to shut it off. I felt so proud! It made zero sense to them why people wouldn’t treat all humans the same. Perhaps TV and social media haven’t influenced them quite yet, and I pray they never do. People spend a lot of money and time trying to look younger, more fit, less cellulite-y and overall, more desirable. And the beauty industry knows it. Consumers are always eager to let go of their dollars for the promise of quick fixes to improve their appearance. Are we so unhappy on the inside that we think looking better on the outside will fix it? Or does society pressure us into seeking the perfect outer appearance? I have a friend who once said to me that she would take all of her wrinkles, cellulite, and happy aspects of her life over any skinny, drop dead gorgeous person who wasn’t happy. I have to agree. I’ve always loved my eye wrinkles because it means I laugh and smile a lot. And all the stretch marks from pregnancies? I call them battle wounds and am proud to have them because they mean I gave life to others. I say we get confident and proud of our imperfections and shine our light the brightest on all the internal greatness we have to offer.

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | July 2021

It’s important to show your insides some love - the health and wellness part of what makes your insides beautiful. Take a walk in nature, cuddle a puppy, go to a sporting event or concert. AND also figure out gifts of inner beauty and nurture them. What are some things that fill your soul? Do you love making people laugh? Watch more comedy and tell more jokes to your friends. Do you love to stimulate intellectual conversations with others? Read up on some current events and ask questions to get the conversation going at a social event. Do you love to be creative? Create a blog of all of your creations to help inspire the world. Sky’s the limit. Anything you do to feed your inner beauty will be memorable way beyond any outer appearance you may have. Just think about this question for a minute. What would mean more to you? To be complimented on your flawless skin, or to have someone tell you that you made their entire week by leaving a nice voicemail on their phone or a treat on their porch? Outer beauty versus inner beauty. (Yeah, both would be nice to hear, but you know where I’m going). I’m not saying you can’t have both. Though no matter how hard you work at it, the aging process will always win. But if you focus on developing your inner beauty, you will be vibrant and youthful forever. BROOMFIELD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

FUELS VOLUNTEERISM By Bette Erickson

What if there existed a central resource to find what individuals and organizations are looking for in terms of volunteering and those looking for volunteers?

There is now, thanks to the Broomfield Community Foundation. The Broomfield Community Foundation has created a one-stop-shop for people, and groups of individuals looking for volunteer opportunities, dubbed Broomfield Volunteer HQ. Its mission “… is to connect people and their passions to empower and impact the nonprofit community. Broomfield Volunteer HQ ensures simple sign-up, scheduling, and uploads for all nonprofits in the Broomfield area and also acts as a streamlined system for local volunteers to offer their time to various projects.” Ours is a community of some 70,000 people, many of whom generously and selflessly spend time volunteering for organizations large and small. Volunteering has proven to provide significant benefits for the individuals giving their time and talents and for the businesses they choose to contribute to. What makes life great is having opportunities to volunteer for causes we care about. Besides, as my daughter observed many years ago as a thoughtful seven-year-old child, “Mommy, it feels good when you do good and it feels bad when you do bad.” The new volunteer portal was designed for individuals, families, or groups interested in exploring a full range of volunteer opportunities. The Broomfield Volunteer HQ portal was launched at the March 2020 Heart of Broomfield Awards, Marianna Williamson, Executive Director of the Broomfield Community Foundation said. “Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of site traffic following the launch since it was a week before everything shut down and in-person volunteer opportunities were eliminated.” (Yet another temporarily thwarted opportunity due to the Coronavirus worldwide pandemic.) “It was brought up again at the 2021 Heart of Broomfield Awards to once again encourage and promote

volunteerism now that more opportunities are opening up,” she added. The Broomfield Community Foundation frequently receives calls and questions about where to volunteer, whether one time or repeat, group volunteering opportunities or youth opportunities, she explained. “There didn’t seem to be a central and localized resource to provide residents with options beyond organizations that we are personally familiar with.” “We discussed this gap with our partners at Elevations Credit Union and they thought it would be a great opportunity to join forces and promote volunteerism, which aligns with their mission and our mission,” said Marianna. The Broomfield Volunteer HQ tool is free for those interested in exploring volunteer opportunities. There are two levels of membership for local organizations wanting to list volunteer opportunities that includes a free basic trial membership or a premium membership with additional features that has an $18/month fee. The Broomfield Community Foundation and Elevations Credit Union are working together to underwrite the zero and low-cost memberships. Marianna explained that as opportunities expand and more people are vaccinated, the

When Broomfield was Camelot – The Creation of a County By Bette Erickson

The threads of Broomfield’s patchwork history tie its past with its future. Things like how Broomfield came to be its own county, come to mind. Broomfield is Colorado’s smallest and newest county and one of only two consolidated city-counties in the state, along with the City and County of Denver.

B

ecause Broomfield continues to be a successful city that runs a county, there is no need to add the cost of county commissioners. With ten council members representing some 73,000+ residents, the community is well-represented and its citizens enjoy important county services without issue. As early as 1997, community visionaries and leaders considered the idea of Broomfield becoming its own county, including residents Larry Cooper, Al Jeffries, Gary Grenier, Clark Griep, Hank Stovall, and Linda Fahrenbruch, among dozens of others. “It was quite a task,” explains former council member and Mayor Pro-Tem Larry Cooper. “It was an amazing experience. We worked on this for years, presented to the city and the idea was accepted.” A feasibility study focused on advantages and disadvantages. Advantages included things like keeping property taxes lower and improved delivery of courts and human services, for example. Disadvantages considered were the costs of a county transition, building new infrastructure like a jail, county and

district courts and transferring operations and records. Not to mention the time and expense of a statewide campaign for creating Colorado’s 64th county. An amendment to the Colorado State Constitution was required to create a new county, meaning a statewide vote was required. Campaigning vigorously and traveling throughout the state yielded just the result Cooper, a lifelong Broomfield resident, and his team sought. The proposal passed in the November 1998 election, allowing Broomfield three years to transition to county status. “The campaign was so much fun,” Mr. Cooper said. “We had a great team.” Even today he gets invitations to speak at various events describing the successful process. He took off 18 months of work and spent much of his own money because he believed so strongly in the benefits of Broomfield becoming its own county. Prior to the 2001 transition to becoming our own county, Broomfield overlapped into Boulder, Adams, Jefferson, and Weld counties, which meant not only needing to travel out of the city for county services, but also four different sales tax bases. During the three-year transition, city officials oversaw an expansion of city hall, construction of new facilities including county and district courts, a jail, and the creation of important human services. In fact, some services are specific county (not municipal) functions such as treasurer, clerk and recorder, assessor, and a variety of human service programs. “Not much in my life changed when we became a county,” said Broomfield city councilwoman and lifelong resident Kim Groom. During the statewide campaign in 1998, she was a new mom and was focusing on her family and her career. “To a citizen it was a seamless transition. But to the city planners and leaders, a lot of work went into it.” Mr. Cooper agreed. “It was so complex. We were changing the State Constitution.” Important relationships were

being cultivated and nurtured at the Colorado Capitol. Representatives Sally Hopper with the Senate and Tony Grampas with the House were instrumental in supporting this proposal. Cooper laughed as he recalled being asked to leave the chambers when the General Assembly voted in favor of putting the measure to become our own county on the ballot. “I was jumping up and down and cheering, I was so happy,” he said. Fast forward to Thursday night, Nov. 15, 2001, to the festive gala in the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library lobby and auditorium. I had just been elected to city council for the first time. Hundreds of people from state legislators to grassroots activists gathered to celebrate Broomfield becoming its own city and county; including remarks from Governor Bill Owens via video. Cooper brought a bottle of Dom Pérignon vintage champagne to mark the occasion. To be sure, we were celebrating Broomfield’s Camelot. Bette Erickson is a former city councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem. Broomfield’s Open Space: A Community Treasure That Almost Didn’t Exist By Kristen Beckman

When COVID-19 quarantines kept people home last year, Broomfield’s open space provided an escape where they could get out, go for a hike, enjoy nature and forget for a few moments about the troubles the world was facing. But this open space almost didn’t exist.

N

early three decades ago, a question on Broomfield’s ballot sought to create a sales and use tax to help fund the purchase of land for open space. It failed by just a handful of votes. A year later, in 1994, a core group of dedicated citizens re-launched the effort to get the issue passed. That group included Ellie McKinley, Rick Erickson, Jean Patterson, and Gordon McKellar, to name just a few. However, McKinley is quick to point out that many people were involved in the grassroots effort to ensure the measure passed the second time around. “We divided up the town so that every house was supposed to have been talked to,” McKinley recalled. “There were lots and lots of people involved with going door to door to talk about open space to make sure it passed. It really was a community effort.” Those efforts paid off, and the issue passed that provided for the acquisition of open space and parks plus improvements. Eighty percent goes to open space and 20 percent to park purposes. “It set the precedent of the city taxing people to buy open space,” said former Broomfield Mayor Pat Quinn, who was an early member of Broomfield’s open space committee. “The whole history of Broomfield was different from that point.” Broomfield residents also set out to save The Field from becoming a development of around 450 homes -- with the rallying cry “Keep the Field in Broomfield.” “I remember the lady who owned the dry cleaners right next to what eventually became the open space, and she wanted those houses there because it meant business for her,” said McKinley. “There were a lot of people who wanted those houses because that meant business, and I can understand that.”

The Broomfield City Council purchased the land, preventing the development, but then faced additional challenges from others who had an eye on using the land for other purposes. “Some citizens wanted soccer fields on The Field, and for good reason,” said McKinley. “There were kids who weren’t able to play because there weren’t enough fields. Of course, everyone wants to build on open land. But once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

In both a politically savvy move and collaborative effort, a compromise was arranged. Broomfield City Council and residents worked together to find another place for athletic fields. “That was really the promise that caused Broomfield County Commons to happen, which is a blend of open space and parkland,” said Kristan Pritz, director of open space and trails for the City and County of Broomfield. “Broomfield County Commons involved the purchase of at least 10 different properties in the early 2000s. It’s kind of cool that if you are at your kid’s soccer game, you can go take a walk around the open space, maybe see some wildlife or have a nice talk with your child. I think having the two areas close to each other was really a great idea.” Those foundational efforts paved the way for more open space projects throughout the next 25 years, including Metzger Farm, a joint effort with Westminster, and the Wottge Open Space at Sheridan Boulevard and 144th Avenue. Broomfield residents demonstrated their support for open spaces by overwhelmingly voting to continue the limited sales tax into perpetuity (including the maintenance of open space), unless changed by the electorate. The result is a community plan that places a clear value on incorporating open space. In fact, the city’s 2016 Comprehensive Plan now calls for 40 percent of the community’s planning area to have public and private land in open space or park uses. To date, the open space and park use equals approximately 35 percent. “When I campaigned for mayor, we would knock on a door and ask, ‘Why did you move to Broomfield?” said Quinn, who is planning to write a book about the history of Broomfield’s open space. “The school districts were always No.1 but open space and trails were always mentioned high up. I just

want the community to know what the founders did here was unprecedented. Broomfield has always led the way and we’ve never been shy about taking an uncharted path.” McKinley, who said she was motivated to become involved due to her love of nature and birds, likens open space to a breathing space within the community. “To me it’s pretty remarkable that we saved this much land,” said McKinley. “ I think Broomfield is so lucky that a lot of this land had never been developed and it was available. A lot of towns don’t have that. All of a sudden they wake up and want that open space, and there’s none left.”

Give Your Hair the Summer Care it Thirsts For! By Megan Mayes

Hair is an important component of image and identity for most of us. We change our haircuts, colors, and styles to fit our mood and our lifestyle.

W

hen summer comes along, your hair needs a little extra love. Sondra Thrasher and her team of professionals at Appearances Hair Color and Design Studio are ready to make your style dreams come to life. They have been serving the Broomfield community for nearly 18 years. The friendly team is, “dedicated to creating a safe, professional, relaxing, and enjoyable experience for all of their guests.” With a little planning it is easy and important to think about hair care before enjoying summer activities with friends and family. Pool time and sun exposure can prevent hair from growing strong or maintaining bright and fresh color. Before visiting the pool, you should rinse your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner to prevent extra absorption of chlorine. This extra layer of protection can prevent some of the dryness and brittleness of frequent swimming. Remember to rinse your hair completely and apply extra conditioner after swimming. Sondra recommends using an SPF like Bumble and Bumble’s Invisible Oil Primer to limit sun bleaching or fading on colored hair. With these changes and regular hair trims, your hair can be healthy and growing throughout the summer. If you are looking for more than your regular trim, or a new style for a date night, it might be time to try a shorter summer style! A pixie cut is both cool on your neck and cool in the mirror, and Sondra’s favorite recommendation for a fresh and exciting change. A sleek ponytail is another way to

22

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | July 2021

keep away the summer heat while maintaining length. High ponytails should be made using cloth hair ties instead of elastic bands. Cloth hair ties are ideal for creating ponytails, braids, and other styles without causing damage from overuse. Maintaining your hair health and summer styles is easier with the help of professional products. Sondra said, “Professional products may seem more expensive in the short term, but when you realize how concentrated [they] are and how to use them effectively, they actually save you money in the long term.” It may take a lot of a drugstore product to achieve your desired results, which can cause build up over time. Professional products are more concentrated and work better with more water than additional application, so you will use less of the high quality ingredients to get better results. If you are looking for first steps or budget friendly changes, consider switching your drugstore shampoo and conditioner for a professional brand from a salon. You will usually see the improvement in your hair within the first week of use! Visit Sondra and her team at Appearances Hair Color and Design Studio for the best in products and services in Broomfield. She is proud of her small business and her amazing team. They are continuously developing their skills and learning about new products, so you can count on them for knowledgeable service.

The concept of medical spas has been gaining popularity for the last 15 years in conjunction with the expansion and evolution of aesthetic treatments. Med spas, as they are called in short, offer medically-based services that go beyond the scope of regular facial and massage facilities. “Our facility might feel ‘spa-like’ when you arrive but the products and services we offer such as hormone replacement therapy, laser aesthetic treatments such as neurotoxins, and dermal fillers, do require advanced training and certifications.” Only highly-qualified, licensed, and trained medical professionals provide services, so you can be confident in your treatment at the hands of a Medical Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, or Registered Nurse. The CO Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation has been seeing an increаsing number of customers looking to make changes to their wellness and aesthetics as people branch out from their homes to attend summer celebrations. Laura remarked on the number of people who are coming into the spa to “tame their quarantine curves” through CoolSculpting and CoolTone therapies. The two resident CoolSculpting Master Certified technicians will make sure you can feel confident at the pool or beach. With the recent lifting of the mask mandate, The CO Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation team also has seen an increase in clients using their facial aesthetic services. Both men and women can put their best face forward with the help of neurotoxin and dermal filler injections, microneedling facials, laser aesthetic work, and other facial treatments. To see lasting results from your med spa experience, it is important to include medical grade skin care into your routine, most importantly a medical grade sunscreen. Protecting your skin protects your investment in your wellness and appearance. The professionals at The Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation are ready to help you with a consultation to meet all of your therapy, treatment, and product needs.

Summer Camps Return, Offering Education and Enrichment By Kristen Beckman

COVID-19 put a damper on all kinds of activities last year, including the annual tradition of in-person summer camps for kids. However, as life starts to get back to normal, many activities are returning. This summer, in addition to outdoor adventure camps and traditional day camps, there are several opportunities for kids to learn about specific topics they may be interested in, from horseback riding to dancing. See below for just a few of the summer camps available in and around Broomfield.

30

Butterfly Pavilion

School of Rock

The Butterfly Pavilion is hosting a series of summer camps with unique and fun themes to educate and entertain kids this summer. For instance, is Dr. Suess’ book The Lorax, in which the Lorax -- who speaks for the trees -- confronts the environmentally destructive Once-ler, fact or fiction? Are the Octonauts in Eric Carle’s books real? Campers at the Butterfly Pavilion will find out during the Fact of Fiction weeklong camp in early July. Other camp themes at the facility in July include a Zookeeper in Training program, which will teach campers what it’s like to care for the Butterfly Pavillion’s famous Chilean rose hair tarantula named Rosie, as well as its brand new California two-spot octopus, who keeps adult zookeepers on their toes with its eight-legged antics. A mythologythemed camp will explore some of the fascinating stories that have been passed down through generations about invertebrates, such as the moon being placed in the sky by a spider or the Milky Way being created by a beetle. In August, the Butterfly Pavilion will take campers on a trip through time to the Ordovician period, to meet the diverse underwater creatures who ruled the oceans, and to encounter the giant bugs of the Carboniferous Period. And an aquatic-themed camp will teach the importance of water to living things, as well as explore freshwater and saltwater animals. The camps are designed for kids ages 5-12, and half-day and fullday camp options are available. The programming is designed to be hands-on, engaging, informative, and appeal to a variety of interests and abilities, the Butterfly Pavilion said.

Does your child dream of playing in a rock band? School of Rock Broomfield offers a variety of music camps and workshops that cover everything from learning to write music to playing in a band. Camps are focused on students of all skill levels who want to learn guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and vocals. July and August camp themes include Indie Rock favorites from the early 2000s for musicians 10 and up with some experience and Rock 101 camps for beginner rockers ages 7-12. Both camps culminate with a live performance on the last day.

Fearless Motion Dance Center Your young dancer will enjoy some of the fun themes Fearless Motion Dance Center in Superior has dreamed up for its summer camp offerings. The center is offering seven different camps this summer for dancers aged 3-16 years. Themes in July and August include Fancy Nancy & Friends for dancers between the ages of 4 and 7. This ballet camp is based on the popular Fancy Nancy books by Jane O’Connor that have now become a TV show. A hip hop class based on LOL dolls and a music video star contemporary and jazz class will also delight dancers.

BACKYARD PARTIES HERE WE COME! By Lisa Payne

I can feel it. There will be a time very soon where we will be in our yards, inviting friends over and being together like nothing ever happened. And in my food-centered mind it is not a party without food. But no fear, these party appetizers are EASY, will be good to your waistline and make you happy all at the same time.

Roasted Mini Peppers

(Serves 4-6, or just one serving if I’m at the party) This recipe is one that my dear friend Lizzie’s husband made one time and I think I ate the whole batch. He made it again for me for one of my birthday gatherings and yet again when they came to visit us in Montana. It is a flavor combo that just works perfectly even though it is only a few ingredients. This one is highly addictive and scrumptious. I make these constantly. Sometimes the whole pan is my dinner. Double or triple the recipe if you want to share, haha. You can play around with this any way you like. I don’t use tomatoes if I don’t have them. My kids hate onions so on theirs I leave those off. You can do what works for you. Whatever you do, DO NOT SKIP THE SALT. It brings all the flavors together perfectly. (Thanks for the inspiration Dylan!)

32

Ingredients:

Directions:

• • • • •

Cut all of the peppers in half and discard seeds. Lay them cut side up on a foil lined baking sheet. Top with a little diced tomato, diced onion and cheese. You can grill them (which is what Dylan does) or broil them in the oven (which is what I do). Both ways are delicious. Once the cheese is melted and the pepper is soft and a little charred, remove and sprinkle with coarse kosher salt. The kosher salt is key. Do not miss this step. Enjoy!!

Hummus with Pickled Vegetables (Serves 4-6)

This hummus recipe is always a favorite with my friends and literally takes five minutes to put together. And the ingredients are those that you usually have on hand and can whip together for people who stop by last minute. Ingredients:

Directions:

• •

Spread the hummus on any plate or platter and top with the chopped giardiniera mix. Squeeze sriracha over the top, if you like it spicy, and serve with any vegetables, crackers or pita for dipping. My favorites to dip are cucumbers and cut up naan bread.

• •

1 family size container hummus (any brand) 1 jar Mezzata Italian Mix Giardiniera, or any other brand pickled cauliflower mix, chopped Sriracha sauce Sliced cucumbers, pita bread, naan and/or crackers

Food brings people together. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming to make. Even opening a bag of potato chips and store bought French onion dip says I love you. Any effort made makes people feel cared for. I wish you many happy, loving gatherings with your people this spring, summer and always. PETS Summer TLC for Your Pet

Heat, Grooming, and 4th of July Tips for Dog Owners By Megan Mayes

Most commonly we think about hot cars and burning sidewalks as summer threats to our furry friends, and while these are always health hazards that should be considered, July presents other challenges for pet owners. As we enter one of the hottest months of the year, spring-time shedding is ending and the infamous fireworks season is on the horizon. You can keep your pooch happy and healthy by knowing the signs of canine heat stroke, how to properly groom their coat, and how to prepare for the 4th of July. During these incredibly hot summer months when we love to adventure outside with our dogs, the heat is their biggest adversary. According to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, heat stroke can occur in any dog but is more likely to affect dogs with long hair or short noses. Without a cool place to rest, water for drinking, or exercise breaks, your dog might show signs of heat stroke including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, rapid heart beat, and vomiting. If you see these signs, take your dog to a cool place where they can rest and drink water. If their symptoms do not quickly improve, take them to the vet for emergency treatment. An easy way to make sure your puppies are staying cool is to properly groom them. Jamie Stark, the Grooming Manager at Wag N’ Wash in Broomfield, recommends using a slicker brush to remove dead hair from winter shedding. It is important to make sure the brush is correct for your dog’s coat: dogs with long hair need brushes with longer pins. A groomer can help with hair removal using a deshedding shampoo or trimming up a long coat. However, keep in mind that simply shaving your dog might not bring them any extra relief. Double coated dogs, such as Huskies, Australian Shepherds, and Bernese Mountain Dogs, do not benefit from shaving in regards to cooling effects and it can actually permanently damage their coat. Give your furry friends a good brushing and visit a Wag N’ Wash to use one of their self wash stations or have a professional groomer give them some extra TLC. With July 4th celebrations quickly upon us, we have come to expect many nights before and after the holiday to be filled with fireworks. Most dogs become stressed or frightened by the sound of fireworks, but some may even be destructive or escape their homes. Now is a good time to make sure all tags and microchips are

34

updated with your most current address and phone number. The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation recommends exercising your pooch before the firework show because tired dogs are less reactive. Keep your dog in a cool and comfortable indoor space, preferably a kennel or crate if they are prone to chewing. Some background noise from a radio or TV can help reduce the stress caused by the sudden noise of fireworks. With a tasty treat or a new toy to chew, your furry friend will feel relaxed through the 4th of July celebrations.

Your Feedback

Helps Shape the Future of the City and County of Broomfield!

What is the most important decision making tool the City and County of Broomfield uses to guide impacts to residents’ day-to-day lives and long-term futures?

Your

comments, opinions, and feedback!

Community feedback is considered along the way of every City and County of Broomfield decision, from identifying what long-term community priorities City and County staff should focus on, to choosing the title for the annual “One Book, One Broomfield” community reading program. How can you ensure your voice is heard? The City and County of Broomfield uses several methods to engage with the community and get feedback, input, and comments with the intention of providing an avenue for everyone to share their feedback on community decisions including:

Online at Anytime: The community can submit comments, feedback, ideas, and more anytime at BroomfieldVoice.com. BroomfieldVoice is a digital engagement platform where you can review project documents, view past meeting notes or videos, find upcoming meetings to attend or leave comments and feedback - all at a time convenient for you! Projects on BroomfieldVoice cover a wide variety of topics and areas of interest, from development reviews to open space and trails plans to sustainability policies.

Via Online or Hard Copy Survey: Many projects completed by the City and County will involve an online or hardcopy survey as a way to collect feedback that can be analyzed and used to inform decision making. Over 1,200 residents completed the 2021 Community Survey, almost doubling the response rate of prior years. Watch out for invitations to participate in surveys via mail, Broomfield’s BintheLoop eNewsletters, and through local print publications like this one!

Live Virtual Events: Engage from the comfort of your home or office by attending live virtual workshops on projects such as sustainability, transportation, and more online via Zoom or other virtual platforms. Upcoming workshops include live workshops with subject matter experts to discuss what sustainability efforts Broomfield should embark on to meet greenhouse

38

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | July 2021

gas reduction goals in the areas of energy, transportation, and zero waste. Registration is open now for these live virtual workshops taking place on July 14 and 22. Register at BroomfieldVoice.com/Sustainability. In Person: Join your friends and neighbors at in person workshops happening this summer! As Broomfield continues to get vaccinated and resume in person events and meetings, there will be opportunities to engage with subject matter experts and staff project managers to better understand upcoming projects, initiatives, and policies. Stop and talk to City and County staff at local special events like Broomfield Days, or attend an in-person workshop or neighborhood meeting. Volunteering: An excellent way to share your lived and professional experience to guide city policies and projects. The City and County has several boards and commissions composed of dedicated residents who lend their time, interest, and expertise to help inform City and County decisions. These boards and commissions members are often consulted on large projects such as master plans, policies guidelines, and more, and help represent the Broomfield community. The City and County of Broomfield values resident input and seeks to constantly improve opportunities for feedback, engagement, and participation in building Broomfield’s future.

The Views You Crave; The Workout You Want By Bette Erickson

ers a most lasting If you are seeking a local hike that off . This tough trail leading impression, Bear Peak may be the one huffing and puffing, yet to its 8,461 foot summit will leave you from the very top. awestruck at its surrounding beauty 42

his hike presents a formidable workout, accessible nearly anytime of the year, winding its way through Fern Canyon. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, masks and social distancing are still advisable. With its pointed profile, Bear Peak is one of Boulder’s most prominent mountains. The steep and seemingly unrelenting Fern Canyon Trail leading to Bear Peak is strenuous, but so satisfying when accomplished. The fern-filled gulch and peaceful, forested footpath offer solitude and an athletic challenge. To begin, head west on Table Mesa Drive, parking at the north lot of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. From NCAR, take the Walter Orr Roberts Trail, walking along a small mesa leading down to the valley. Climb a gently sloping ridge to a water tank to join the Mesa Trail, turning left (south). Fern Canyon, with its sheer rock faces rising straight up in some areas, forks off of the south Mesa Trail. Walk southward then go west following the signs to Fern Canyon to begin a brutal, rock-stepping climb. The narrow trail pushes through thick ferns, tall grasses and a variety of berry shrubs rising to the summit of Bear Peak. Remember to bring along plenty of water for this outing, as well as snacks and sunblock. About two-thirds of the way up is a spacious saddle – a welldeserved resting area. From here, going left, you can make your ascent (you’re almost there: about 1,000 vertical feet to go) to its rock-strewn pointy summit.

TO THE TRAILHEAD Drive to Boulder and take the Table Mesa exit. Continue west two miles past the intersection of Broadway on Table Mesa Drive. Park at NCAR and access the Walter Orr Roberts Trail.

Distance: 5.6 miles roundtrip Difficulty: Strenuous Elevation gain: 2,381 feet Dogs: Yes, on leash Information: City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks Department, 303-441-3440.
