FROM THE
EDITOR Our Time I write this column a few days before Christmas, with the printer deadline ticking like a time bomb and a pile of unfinished Christmas cards next to me on the table. My daughters and son-in-law are home and the three of them and my husband are helping with holiday preparations, which I am behind on once again. Call it my own personal holiday tradition. In the mail today, we received the first of the “after Christmas” ads which always make me just a little bit grumpy. I am thinking about how much I want to be “in the moment” this holiday season as I sit perpetually caught between what I should have done yesterday and what I must do tomorrow, with one foot and one pile of mail firmly in each camp. January will arrive with its urging to renew, and the festive lights, colorful ribbons, and delicious treats of last week will be cleaned and cleared away – suddenly a nuisance – as we wipe the slate clean for the promise of something else to come. It’s a lot of pressure! I am tempted – as always – to make numerous resolutions and vow to improve and change various aspects of my life. But I think I will resist. Except for one thing. This year maybe I will work harder on “now.” I will try to be more intentional every day. We have all heard the advice to start each day with the biggest and most difficult task at hand. Wise and logical, but difficult to do if you are an uber planner/procrastinator like I suspect many of us are! But if we approach the now with this one simple idea there will be far less worry about what didn’t happen yesterday and what must happen tomorrow, every single day, in fact preventing the collision of these two things. Worry disappears when you just take care of stuff! Think of how you feel when you make a list and then scratch items off the list as they are completed. It is so satisfying! A tiny act that erases the burden of the words on the paper. What matters most is simply the thing right before us. So for the new year I wish you the power to intentionally live each day. Thanks for reading,
Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

BUSY FAMILIES
breathe in
THE NEW YEAR By Lisa Payne As many of you set goals for the new year, pick your word for the year, or just make peace with the fact that you aren’t going to make a new year’s resolution, I want to remind you of one thing. No matter what life throws at you in the coming months and beyond, just remember to breathe.
I’ve always been a shallow breather. I didn’t realize it or understand why I did it until I took it upon myself to see a doctor at the National Jewish Hospital years ago. They are leaders in respiratory health. I explained that I can’t breathe when I do cardio and I can’t catch my breath when nervous. They did a full breathing test and scan and then the doctor sat me down with a smirk on his face. (Remember he spends his days seeing people on oxygen and in very bad shape). He said I was the highlight of his day because the only thing wrong with me was that I was out of shape and that I needed to learn to breathe deeply and not just from the upper part of my lungs. I had no idea I was an upper chest breather. I’ve been doing it since I was a child. If you are someone who sucks in your stomach constantly, you are a shallow breather. I now had a plan! Learn to breathe more deeply!
12
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | January 2022
There are so many benefits to practicing deep breathing:
•
It relieves anxiety, stress, and tension in the body so you can react properly.
•
It helps regulate our emotions. It can stop panic attacks and freezing under pressure (public speaking).
•
It helps detoxify the body.
•
It helps to oxygenate the body and all its organs so that we can heal quickly and live longer.
•
It leads to greater inner peace and helps with mind control (goodbye 3:00 a.m. panic thoughts).
•
It boosts athletic performance.
•
It strengthens the diaphragm muscle, which tends to weaken as we get older.
•
Using the diaphragm muscle helps massage the inner organs and aids digestion.
•
It lowers the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline in the bloodstream.
•
It helps us deal with pain and breathe through it (think labor).
So, what is the proper way to breathe? The stomach should always push out first when you take a breath, and your chest will rise second if taking a deep breath. When you exhale, visualize sucking your belly button into your backbone. A calming exercise you can do when stressed is the fours technique - breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for four seconds. Repeat until calm (usually 5-6 times). I have my kids do this too when they can’t sleep or feel anxious about something. I am wishing you all a very Happy New Year filled with many deep breaths resulting in a new found inner peace that will carry you through 2022.

Department Focus
ECONOMIC By Kristen Beckman
The success of Broomfield depends not only on its economic strength but also on building a community that is invested in its future. To push forward with a vision of the Broomfield of tomorrow, the city created a department about a year ago to focus on this objective.
Broomfield’s Economic Vitality and Development Department combined the work of three previously independent city teams - business development, catalytic projects, and housing development and programs - to create a higher level of integration and collaboration, and work to achieve the common goals of the city manager, city council, and the community as a whole. “Vitality is not a trivial word in the title of the department,” said Jeff Romine, director of development finance and economist for the City of Broomfield, who oversees the department. “It’s a very important word because it’s not about bringing three more businesses to Broomfield or creating another 500 jobs. That’s part of our work, but we go far beyond that. This is about creating job opportunities for our children and creating the income and the tax base in order to provide the quality services that are expected by our residents.” Romine said when the business development team talks to prospective businesses about locating or expanding in Broomfield, they typically are interested in the quality of the talent pool in the community and what housing access is like for potential employees. It became clear, he said, that the department needed to focus on more than a business attraction philosophy.

Beyond that, the team focuses on creating more affordable housing in the community through work with the Broomfield Housing Advisory Committee and the Colorado Housing Finance Authority, and the catalytic projects group concentrates on large community projects that cross boundaries and departments, including the Baseline Development, Broomfield Town Square, and the Flatiron Crossing redevelopment and reinvestment effort. The Broomfield Town Square project is a great example of the collaboration that occurs across the department, Romine said. “It’s about creating a place where the community can come together to shop a little bit, dine a little bit, hang out at the library, walk around, and see great art. It’s very much about bringing the community vision and vitality forward,” he said. Romine said Broomfield’s economic health is strong and benefits from a uniquely high concentration of international
ses on Broomfield's
V I TA L I T Y business connections as well as a talented labor pool. He noted that the city’s economic vitality is also a result of a strong interest among residents, employees, and employers in the community. That engagement and investment has been especially apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, when local nonprofits, city departments, businesses, and individuals stepped up to help those hit hard by the crisis. Within two weeks of the start of the pandemic in Colorado, the Broomfield Economic Vitality Department jumped into action to help support local businesses by launching business support programs and distributing funding provided by the Broomfield City Council and the State of Colorado. The Enhance Broomfield program, for example, provides grants of up to $7,500 to eligible Broomfield businesses to support their efforts to sustain by meeting customer needs and market conditions during COVID-19. Romine estimated that all together the Broomfield business community has received roughly $1.3 million in small business grants given to roughly 150 businesses over the past year and a half. He said the programs are ongoing and that additional grants will be funded in 2022 and until the pandemic is over. And while pandemic relief efforts have been center stage during the past two years, the department also has ongoing programs to support and strengthen the community. “We’re creating an independent board for the Broomfield Housing Authority that really strengthens our ability to focus on housing, which is one of the most fundamental questions and issues of our time,” said Romine. “How do we deal with housing both for those who are struggling but also people who want to stay in the community as they move into their senior years, or children of residents and others who want to move here and put roots down.”
Romine said he wants local businesses to know that the department is always listening and encourages businesses and community members to help it understand how it can provide support. “We look forward to really delivering on what the community is seeking,” said Romine.

Welcoming the
2022 CITY COUNCIL By the City and County of Broomfield
T
he eleven residents who compose the 2022 City Council all have unique experience and backgrounds, and are united by their passion for Broomfield. As work continues on Broomfield’s Community Priorities in 2022, these elected officials will drive Broomfield’s future. Take a moment to “meet” your 2022 City Councilmembers.
Mayor Pro Tem and Ward 1 Councilmember Stan Jezierski loves Broomfield for the people, having made strong friendships since moving to the city and county. Jezierski enjoys hiking and camping and opened a law firm in Broomfield in 2011. Also representing Ward 1 is James Marsh-Holschen who enjoys spending time with his family, reading historical nonfiction, and watching 49ers football. Ward 2 Councilmember William Lindstedt is a lifelong Broomfield resident, currently residing in the Original Broomfield Neighborhood with his partner Bria and their retired racing greyhound, Pax. Outside of reading council memos, Lindstedt enjoys chess and gardening (growing almost 100 pounds of tomatoes last year!). Also representing Ward 2 is Councilmember Austin Ward, who is passionate about transportation and seeing Broomfield become a more walkable, bikeable, and sustainable community. Ward enjoys biking, hiking, swimming, and skiing during his free time. Ward 3 Councilmember Jean Lim ran for office to encourage residents to participate in civic matters. Lim works as an English as Second Language teacher, and values the beautiful Ward 3 views of the Front Range. Also representing Ward 3, Councilmember Deven Shaff was inspired to serve Broomfield after being told “if you want to see change happen, you have to get involved.” A former Opera singer, Shaff is passionate about the arts and is a co-founder of the Turnpike Arts District.
Mayor Guyleen Castriotta A courageous advocate for underserved communities, Mayor Guyleen Castriotta leads with action. In 2021, Castriotta participated in Broomfield’s “Let’s Talk About It” campaign to reduce the stigma around mental health, and the same year welcomed the first official celebration of LGBTQ Pride to Broomfield. Castriotta says these moments of courage serve as beacons of hope and calls upon residents to “... let our hope shine and illuminate the world around us, now more than ever.” Broomfield residents since 2013, Castriotta and her wife reside in Ward 5, and Castriotta enjoys teaching Pilates, paddle boarding, and caring for her mother-in-law.
Ward 4 Councilmember Bruce Leslie is serving on the Broomfield City Council to “give back and contribute solutions to the issues important to his neighbors.” Leslie teaches leadership, plays several instruments, and is an avid photographer. Also representing Ward 4, Councilmember Laurie Anderson “fell in love with Broomfield at first sight,” citing the abundant open spaces and friendly people. Anderson is passionate about volunteering and helping residents engage efficiently with local, state, and federal government leaders. Ward 5 Councilmember Todd Cohen has a lifelong interest in public policy, and a master’s degree in public administration. Cohen admires Ward 5 for its diversity and the opportunities it offers for the future. Also representing Ward 5 is Councilmember Heidi Henkel, who recently spearheaded the Broomfield Afghan Evacuee Task Force, engaging area nonprofits and the business community to welcome Afghan families fleeing violence. Henkel enjoys cheering on her kids in competitive athletic events, skiing, and biking, and recently accepted a position as an Operations Manager for a Denver real estate firm.

BAL SWAN BALL
AWhole NewWorld
Aims to Raise Funds for Children Through
F
or more than 50 years, Bal Swan Children's Center has provided high-quality early childhood education to the families of Broomfield and the surrounding area. As a non-profit preschool, Bal Swan Children's Center is committed to the social and emotional development of children with special needs in an inclusive environment alongside their peers with typical needs. As such, Bal Swan Children’s Center’s mission and vision is to provide early childhood programs in support of a more inclusive world where all people experience a sense of belonging. Fundraising is a vital part of the school’s foundation to help children. Each year, Bal Swan conducts several fundraising activities to support its needs including the annual Bal Swan Ball. The 2022 Bal Swan Ball, themed “A Whole New World,” will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the Omni Interlocken Hotel & Resort in Broomfield with in-person and virtual attendance options. The Bal Swan Ball is Broomfield's longest standing black-tie and can’t miss community event. A limited number of in-person tickets are available this year, with reservations required and black-tie or cocktail attire requested. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. This year’s Ball will feature a fantastic silent auction, an entertaining live auction hosted by comedian Sam Adams, breathtaking music by three-time Grammy Award winning Classical singer Michelle DeYoung, an elegant dinner, and dancing. There will also be a fun money casino night with blackjack, poker, craps, and roulette. Those who wish to stay the night at the hotel and take the elevator home, may secure a discounted room rate of $109 at the Omni for the night of the event. Call 303-438-6600 to book your room at the Bal Swan Ball rate. Guests may also attend the Ball from the comfort of home
by joining a livestream from the event at 6:45 p.m. Each virtual ticket includes a charcuterie board for two, and a bottle of wine. Virtual attendees will enjoy the presentations and performances happening at the live event, and will also have full access to the silent auction when it opens online. “This year guests can expect a more intimate event. With COVID still very present, we are having a smaller event to help keep our families safe. Our virtual option comes with a charcuterie board, a bottle of wine, and a kids’ craft,” said Fundraising and Events Coordinator Kelly Fleischhacker, “And at the live event we are doing things a bit different this year. We will be having three-time Grammy Award Winning Classical Singer Michelle DeYoung perform, and we will also have local celebrity and comedian Sam Adams entertaining at the event.” She added that the staff of Bal Swan is excited to unveil the future of Bal Swan during the Ball and explain how that future will drive a bigger impact to the community. Guests can expect to see a glimpse into what their donations will support, as well as share the excitement about the school’s future. “Since there is limited seating available, we encourage people to purchase tickets as soon as possible. The cutoff date for in-person tickets will be February 11, and February 18 for virtual. We are expecting the tickets to the in-person event to be sold out by the end of January,” Fleischhacker added. Bal Swan Ball attendees include community and corporate leaders and elected officials, and residents from Broomfield and many surrounding Denver communities. Since the 1960s, Bal Swan has been a staple in the Broomfield community, serving the youngest citizens with high quality early childhood education and therapeutic support. Employing best practices in early childhood is a cornerstone of Bal Swan’s philosophy and children are at the center of all decisions.

Broomfield’s
Sister Cities
Program Offers Far-Reaching Benefits By Bette Erickson
Our world is a big place and it’s a small place. It’s a small place not only because of modern technology - it’s made smaller by friendships. The Broomfield and Ueda, Japan, Sister City relationship recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. And that remarkable achievement is because of the work and foresight of dedicated volunteers both here in Broomfield and in Ueda. “The importance of this exchange has surpassed all my expectations and continues to evolve on a daily basis,” explained Bill Rettie, Chairperson of the Organization for the Promotion of International Exchange (OPIE). Rettie lives in Ueda City, Nagano, Japan, and is instrumental in facilitating the long-standing success of the Sister City programming. “Not a day goes by that we are not thinking of Broomfield and how lucky we are to be sistered with Broomfield. Ueda is a great place and Japan is a great country. But we are on a small island that can never experience the expanse and magnitude of Broomfield,” he said. “Likewise, your citizens gain experiences in Ueda that are not possible in Broomfield. It’s the direct experience that has the impact.” Broomfield resident Helene Jewett agreed. “I have learned so much about Japanese culture and language as well as developed long-lasting friendships because of the dedication of the Ueda and Broomfield committee members.” Those long-lasting friendships are a result of the relationships that host families and students create. Each summer the two municipalities take turns sending a delegation to the sister location for up to 14 days, alternating years. Because of the COVID pandemic, host family and student exchanges didn’t happen in 2020 and 2021, but that didn’t stop the families and organizers from communicating and hosting various virtual events.

“The important thing about this exchange is it’s one of a kind,” Rettie said. That is true: this year both cities participated in online events commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Sister Cities relationship. In September, an Arts and Cultural Exchange was hosted online, showcasing Broomfield’s Public Art, featuring local artists and performers as well as cultural education.
Student Exchange The next student exchange for Broomfield teens and chaperones to visit Ueda, Japan, is planned for two weeks at the end of July and the beginning of August 2022. Applications will be due in February 2022 and delegation selection will be in March. The trip is dependent on COVID restrictions and a final decision will be made in February 2022.

“The art and culture event was a great opportunity for both cities to discover a different way of connecting people-to-people and share the energy and expression of the two cities,” explained Broomfield’s Sister City Chairperson, Junko Goodwin. “It will be wonderful if we can expand our programming to include an artist exchange between our two cities in the future,” she added. Because of the work that Goodwin does, the committee provides Japanese culture and language classes to prepare Broomfield families for hosting their guests. Goodwin has been the Sister City committee chair since 2019, providing Japanese language classes to delegates and their families, organizing events and managing communication between Ueda and Broomfield committee members. “By organizing for visits and exchanges every year, we are a much closer community. A much more open community. A much kinder and more tolerant city and a more vibrant community.” Rettie goes on, “Broomfield residents’ visits here have impacted 1,000s of our citizens. Everyone knows of Broomfield and wants to go there. It has given Ueda something to be proud of.” And what do Broomfield host families and travelers glean from our Sister City exchange? Jewett explains, “The families share what it is like to live in Broomfield and plan activities that show them the American way of life. The program gives students the opportunity to practice leadership roles as international hosts and guests.” It goes without saying, these warm relationships and learning opportunities help make our world a smaller, more welcoming place. ANNUAL REPORT
Provides Glimpse into Broomfield Community Foundation Impact By Kristen Beckman
The impact of the Broomfield Community Foundation’s work within the community cannot be fully measured by numbers and graphs, but the organization’s 2020-2021 annual report quantifies some of its specific efforts.
The report covers January 2020 through September 2021, a time period marked by incredible shifts in the needs of the community as a result of COVID-19. Marianna Williamson, executive director of BCF, said the report provides a broad overview and details of all the programming and individual funds and initiatives that the foundation supports. “Since we are not a direct service provider like many other 501c3s, it is often difficult to explain exactly what we do and how donor support makes a difference in our community,” said Williamson. “The annual report provides all of that background and explanation - listing all of our grant recipients, scholarship recipients, and the larger community needs our funding addresses.” Williamason encourages Broomfield residents to spend some time reading the report so they can see how their support moves the needle forward in enhancing programs and supporting services under its five funding pillars, which include arts, civic initiatives, education, human service, and seniors. The report is available on the foundation’s website at www. broomfieldfoundation.org/annual-report/ It includes a message from Foundation President Tim Schafer, which details some of the organization’s achievements during the past 18 months. He highlighted the organization’s work to encourage volunteerism and engagement within the
community as well as its collaboration with the Broomfield Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) group to distribute community donations to the tune of $158,128 to nonprofit partners in response to the pandemic. These dollars helped pay for equipment and services including healthcare and personal protective equipment, bulk food, emergency shelter, and mental health services. BCF also distributed more than $260,000 in annual grants and scholarships in addition to disaster relief efforts. It worked to continue to grow its Youth Advisory Committee and provide no-cost education and resource development for local nonprofits. The report also recaps the foundation’s Heart of Broomfield award winners and scholarship recipients for 2020 and 2021 and recognizes corporate and individual donors as well as nonprofit partners. “It has been a unique past 18 months and the annual report reflects that,” said Williamson. “The outpouring of support from this amazingly generous community in 2020 has rolled over into 2021. Despite a very difficult year financially for so many, the members of this community stepped up when the call for help was made. BCF distributed more grant funding by far in the last 18 months than ever in our history, and we thought it was extremely important to produce a detailed report of how those donated dollars were used.”

Winter Hikes
Soothe Your Soul TO
By Bette Erickson
South Boulder’s Towhee and Homestead Trail Loop “Poison eats its container,” my Grandmother Zaida once said to me, a trace of a British accent around the vowels. “Don’t hold grudges,” her voice soothing. I thought of her lovingly while I hiked South Boulder’s Towhee and Homestead loop trails last week. That’s what hiking does for me: allows contemplation. If you’re interested in this pleasant route with its close-up views of the Front Range, including towering Bear and South Boulder Peaks, you’re in for a treat. First snap a picture of the trails shown on the large kiosk and then access the hike by crossing a large, wooden footbridge and following the trail as it curves east, passing the famed Dunn House. When presented with the fork, you may choose to go right or left. It doesn’t matter which direction you choose because the footpath meets up again at the Mesa Trail. Meander along the Mesa Trail before hopping on the other route to head back to the trailhead. (If you’ve taken Towhee Trail, you’ll want to connect with the Homestead Trail shortly after reaching the Mesa Trail to loop back, or vice versa.) To the trailhead: Take highway 36 from Broomfield to McCaslin Blvd., turn left to access Marshall Road on your right, passing Costco to continue to where the road dead ends. Go west through the light at Highway 93 onto Eldorado Canyon Road several miles and park at the South Mesa Trailhead on the right. Distance: 2.7-mile loop Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: About 495-feet Dogs: Yes, on leash or check for dog regulation signs Fee: $5/day for cars not registered in Boulder County Information: Boulder County Open Space and Mountain Parks (303) 441-3440

Anne U. White Trail The Anne U. White Trail in Boulder is an easy, quick outing with a seasonal tributary that gushes during the spring to double the volume of Fourmile Canyon Creek. I like it this time of year though because it’s private and feels so remote. The Anne U. White Trail, on Boulder’s northern periphery, is special in a number of ways. The short and easy Anne Underwood White Trail is named for the civic activist who advocated for open space and other worthy causes. Once at the trail, zigzagging along Fourmile Canyon Creek, visitors can expect to cross the now-frozen stream numerous times until it ends at private property denoted with signage and broken barbed-wire fences. The tiny trickle and hum of the water in spots seems alluring and adds to the feeling of
One-on-One Banking As It Should Be
serenity and quiet awe along the route that penetrates Fourmile Canyon Creek Park. The footpath offers a sustained but gradual 540-foot elevation gain. Unlike routes elsewhere, the Anne U. White Trail is not suitable for snowshoeing during the winter because of the numerous stream crossings. About halfway along the footpath, expect to come upon a small, pink flagstone bench overlooking the creek. Gentle and peaceful, this short hike offers a suburban retreat along a forested trail. While not unusual, a while back when I hiked here there were signs indicating a mountain lion sighting. Once you’ve hiked some 30- or 45-minutes - and of course depending on your speed - you will come to the end of the short 1.75-mile trail, just under some rock outcroppings. Turn around and return the way you came. To the trailhead: Take Hwy. 36 west to Boulder and access Broadway. Go north a fair bit and turn left on Lee Hill Road and continue 1.1 mile to Wagon Wheel Gap Road. Turn left and proceed a mile to Pinto Drive, a packed gravel road. Take a left and look for the trailhead where the road dead-ends. Distance: 3.5 miles out and back Difficulty: Easy

Caring for Our Communities for More Than 100 Years At Centura Avista Adventist Hospital, we’ve been providing high-quality whole person care to our flourishing communities for more than a century.
O
ur healing legacy is so much larger than the walls of our buildings; it grows and thrives because of our people. Some of our incredible caregivers have been a part of our ministry for decades themselves! Meet Katherine Griffith, RN, one of our longestserving caregivers at Avista. Kathy, as she is known, has been caring for babies and their parents in our New Life Center since 1991, and she says she has enjoyed every minute. “I have just loved working in Labor and Delivery in the New Life Center, and I have always had a sense this is where I belonged. It’s been such a journey to be able to help people and be there at the most amazing time [for parents] of babies being brought into this world.” After 30 years at Avista, Kathy says people have asked her when she plans to retire. She says that won’t be anytime soon. “I tell them I still like my work and still want to help out!” Even though technology has changed significantly since Kathy began her career, the compassionate care she and her colleagues deliver each and every day has remained the same. “I just feel fortunate to have had that ability to work at such a respected hospital. They’ve made a good name for themselves for a good reason,” Kathy said. “I feel so fortunate that I’ve been able to do that for these last 30 years.” Learn more about our New Life Center and the many other services and at Centura Avista Adventist Hospital, including 24/7 emergency care and state-of-the-art surgical procedures, by visiting us online at www.avistahospital.org.
