EDITOR FROM THE Our Moms

I have probably never said this directly to my Mom or to my Mother-in-law but ever since I got married and had my own kids I have always said to my husband and our daughters, “Mother’s Day is not actually about me. Mother’s Day is really for the

Grandmas.” And I have truly felt and believed this! I am not saying that I have not been treated

EXTREMELY WELL on Mother’s Day - I have! My girls and their Dad do a good job! My Mother’s Day just feels like sub-text. Like maybe in some way I have not fully “earned” it yet. Maybe that is in part because as a mother, I stand in admiration of the mothers before me. All of them.

I remember being so happy when I first found out I was going to have a baby. The feeling was almost immediately followed by an overwhelming fear that, 1. I would not actually be “able” to give birth, and 2. that I would be a horrible or at least inadequate mother.

I remember when I was a young “working” mom. It seemed that the debate over who had it more difficult and who was doing it right was constantly swirling - working moms vs. stay-at-home moms. One thing is for sure - ALL moms are working moms. I never felt like my choice to work was better or more correct than someone else’s choice - it was simply the situation that I was in. And I was one of the lucky ones (see paragraph one), because my Mom stepped up to provide daycare for my babies so I could work.

It’s not pretty, but as moms we often judge each other. Why? Motherhood is one of the most difficult and most important professions! Shouldn’t we all lift each other up, acknowledging that though we may do it differently we are all just trying to do our best?

So, I did in fact successfully give birth twice. And recently both of said nowadult offspring independently told me that I did a good job raising them and being their mom. There really is no greater compliment. It actually made me cry.

In my life I have been fortunate to hold and experience many, many roles. But none more important and more meaningful than being a mom. And let’s face it - motherhood presents daily opportunities to mess it up! You just have to get more of the days right than not.

So why am I writing about this now? My oldest is about to become a mother herself. And now I will be the grandma. But it still doesn’t really change things in my mind. I might be the grandma, but as a person who is also someone’s child, my greatest gratitude remains for the one who raised me. And as I always have, I will aim to emulate her in my new role. And I guess that is the circle.

Happy Mother’s Day and Thanks for Reading,

BUSY FAMILIES

Graduations, Passages

There is so much to celebrate in May, especially our high school graduates! This is such a bittersweet time for all families, whether your first born, middle or baby are leaving the nest. You’ve spent the past year soaking up all of the “lasts” this year and preparing yourself for the new normal you will nestle into during the fall and beyond. I send you all so much love and celebration during this part of life’s journey.

I love to listen to commencement speeches. The wisdom imparted can be so impactful to our kids and even the adults hearing the message. The speakers tell you to follow your dreams, take chances, learn from others who know more than you, go outside your comfort zone, and realize that failure is the best way to learn. Such wonderful messages.

I also believe that everyone should learn to tap into their intuition and let that be a driving force in their life. Only you know what feels right or what feels off at any given moment … trust yourself and let that be your guide.

One commencement speech I found incredibly profound years ago was the one given by Steve Jobs to the Stanford graduates in 2005. He gave the speech after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and knowing he would die. He also gave the speech as someone who was a college dropout yet followed his dreams and ended up incredibly successful by doing what he loved.

Steve had heard a quote when he was 17 that went something like “live each day as if it were your last.” He said that quote was the most powerful tool he had to make big choices in life. He was able to avoid the trap of thinking he had something to lose. There was no reason not to follow his heart. He said all external expectations -such as pride, fear of embarrassment or failure - they all fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

That resonates with me on the deepest level. It’s so easy to get caught up with what other people are doing or where they are going. Is that what you really want? This is where your intuition and listening to your own heart really come into play. As Jobs said best, “do not let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. Your own heart and intuition somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

Jobs went on to say that your time is limited on this earth. Do not waste it living someone else’s life. Get out there and live as if today could be your last day. Death is a destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.

In closing he explained that death is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Such a heavy and morbid topic but one that can be fresh and enlightening and hopeful to so many young people.

Right now, the “new” is all the graduates ready to impact the world. Those who hopefully listen to their intuition and truly live whatever their heart is telling them to do. Live free from the opinions of others dear graduates – live as if this is your last day on earth!

Right now, the “new” is all the graduates ready to impact the world. Those who hopefully listen to their intuition and truly live whatever their heart is telling them to do.

Make Mental Health a Priority this Year

Working on improving your mental health may be easier than you ever thought. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) is focusing on how our surroundings can positively impact mental health. There are numerous safe and healthy spaces across Broomfield offering connection to other people in the community and activities to positively impact well being.

Looking for a place to feel better? Take a walk outside! According to a 2022 survey conducted by Broomfield’s Open Space and Trails Department, over 90% of responders said parks, trails, and open spaces in Broomfield have a positive impact on their mental and physical health. Get involved with activities through Open Space and Trails such as Earth Planting Day on May 6 or Migratory Bird Day May 11. Early June events include the launch of Broomfield 100 and Broomfield Pride on June 3.

Staying active is always a recipe for a happier, healthier mindset. Recreation Services in Broomfield not only offer ways to stay physically active, but also ways to connect with an active community. Regular classes such as restorative yoga and healing sounds and meditation workshops are designed to rejuvenate the mind and calm the nervous system.

Youth for Youth (Y4Y) is consistently creating programs for youth to take care of their well being, both physically and mentally. Teens and tweens are invited to May 10’s Teen Self Care Night, a free evening of de-stressing at inventHQ Makerspace. Y4Y also has set up an interactive display at the Broomfield Library for the month of May about Reasons to Live. Learn more about Y4Y by following their Instagrams at broomfieldy4y and areason2livee.

If you’re an individual aged 55 or over, you may want to check out Senior Services programs to boost your mental health. Enjoy a time out listening and dancing to polka and other music by

Jim Elrich with the Spring Fling Senior Dance on Thursday, May 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Healthy Heart lunches are a way to eat healthy and build connections with other seniors in your community. These lunches occur the first and third Wednesday of every month at the Lakeshore Cafe.

Engaging with the Library and Creative Broomfield supports mental health by bringing community members together allowing them to build relationships with one another. Offering more than just books, the Library and Creative Broomfield provide safe spaces and opportunity, growth, trust and connection—part of a thriving community where all belong. Try programs such as monthly Crafternoons or participate in groups such as the Outcast Knitters or Dungeons and Dragons club.

If you’ve ever had a friend or neighbor go through a mental or behavioral health crisis, you know it can be hard to know how to respond. That’s why as part of Broomfield’s Behavioral Health Improvement Plan, Broomfield is starting a Community Initiated Care model designed to empower everyone in Broomfield to recognize behavioral issues in a friend, neighbor or family member and take helpful action in the moment.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 9-8-8 or the Colorado Crisis Services at 844-493-8255 or Text “TALK” (8255) to 38255.

For more information on the programs mentioned and other ways to find mental health support, visit Broomfield.org/MHAM.

VETERANS MUSEUM BROOMFIELD to Host MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE Recapping Successful Year

May is an important month for the Veterans Museum Broomfield as it joins with the community to honor those who served and died for our country.

The holiday, which will be observed this year on May 29, dates back to the post-Civil War era when citizens would place spring flower memorials on the graves of fallen soldiers. The practice of decorating veterans’ graves with flowers became known as Decoration Day. The federal government officially changed the day’s name to Memorial Day in 1967.

The museum’s annual Memorial Day event presented in conjunction with the City and County of Broomfield will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Broomfield County Commons Park off of Sheridan Boulevard between Midway Avenue and 136th Avenue. Access to the event will be through the Paul Derda Recreation Center parking lot.

The event will feature the North Metro and BPD Honor Guard, honoring of Gold Star families, remarks from Broomfield Mayor Guyleen Castriotta, a speech from Colonel Michael J. Bruno, patriotic music from the Broomfield Civic Chorus and Rocky Mountain Brassworks, activities and displays from local reenactor groups, and a flyover. This event is an opportunity for the community to come together to remember those who served and died for our country.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2023 20

The event is one of several activities the Veterans Museum engages in throughout the year, in addition to its core on-site offerings. On June 10, the museum will host a Flag Day event consisting of a ceremony followed by a respectful retirement of old or damaged American flags. Flags made with natural fibers are retired by ceremonial burning. For flags made with synthetic materials that should not be burned, volunteers guide Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups in cutting the stars from the stripes, which are then donated to the nonprofit group Stars for Our Troops to reuse to honor veterans and first responders.

The museum’s mission is to preserve the memories of America’s military history and strengthen the bonds to the community by facilitating the stories of veterans through displays and artifacts for the benefit and education of generations to come. More than 3,000 people visited the Veterans Museum in 2022, and the museum made 10 outreach visits to schools, special events, and talks.

The museum offers no-cost resources for area teachers when addressing WWII or the Vietnam War. The traveling trunks can be brought into the classroom for student and teacher use. Artifacts included in the trunks deal with the Home Front, soldier’s daily life, and the technology of the day. While they do not require a docent’s explanation, the museum can also assist with speakers on topics from the Civil War through modern conflicts.

According to its annual report, the museum runs on nearly 6,400 hours of volunteer support, including those needed to put on its flag retirement ceremony in June, man Broomfield Days activities in September, and offer Coffee & Conversation sessions throughout the year. Last year, the museum hosted 23 speakers, bringing its total speaker count to 239 since it launched the series in 2012.

While still navigating the difficulties of re-opening following the pandemic, the museum added an additional open day during 2022 and is now open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Collections Committee and archival team cataloged 1,111 items in 2022 alone, which are available to the public via its online collection database at broomfieldveterans.pastperfectonline.com. It also is digitizing and cataloging more than 600 photos and a dozen scrapbooks. A major ongoing project for the museum is transcribing a large cache of letters from 1919-1920 from a Fort Collins veteran.

The museum noted it increased its collection of women’s items with six individual women’s uniforms, photographs, and stories of being in the military, almost all with a connection to WWII. The museum is actively seeking stories and items from women who served overseas during Vietnam.

The museum also distributed five grants for rent assistance and one for temporary housing during 2022, totaling more than $5,500 to veterans living in Broomfield through the Robert Davenport, Sr. Fund. The fund helps address emergency financial needs of honorably discharged or retired military veterans and their immediate families.

Take a New Look at Arista Broomfield

Maybe you have come to visit a business in the Class A office, enjoyed a concert or event, or dined at one of the many fabulous restaurants along the Arista Place mainstreet. Maybe you’ve only driven by the community situated along Highway 36.

Either way, if you haven’t visited Arista Broomfield lately, you are missing out. The development is filled with walkable amenities, including entertainment, transit, restaurants, hotels, medical services, parks, the US 36 bike trail, office space, and apartments and townhomes.

“I hope people in our Broomfield community will know and love visiting Arista,” said Jordan Wiens of Wiens Real Estate Ventures and Arista Broomfield.

Arista hosts several community events throughout the year.

Arista Place is the downtown of Arista, a three-block main-street area that is home to nine restaurants, shops, the Aloft Hotel, Class A office space, and residential units.

Mama Lolita’s and Sushi Rama are the two newest culinary additions to Arista’s mouthwatering lineup of restaurants.

Arista Deli and Vinca both recently remodeled and held grand re-openings, and Proto’s Pizza, Colorado Keg House, and Hickory & Ash are staples in the community. In addition, Arista also features SPACES co-working, Salon Cosabella, a SPENGA fitness studio, and Denver Restorative Dentistry.

features fresh local brews, a variety of food trucks, lawn games, live bands, and merchants. On June 28, Arista will host one of the northwest corridor’s best breakfast stations from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for those who are participating in Colorado’s Bike to Work Day. Arista’s summer concert series at Arista Park this year includes Radio Band on Wednesday, July 12, and Groove/Motion on Wednesday, August 16.

Conveniently located off 120th Ave. and Wadsworth, Arista showcases Colorado’s beauty and encourages residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors. The community features six parks, each with its own distinct character. Arista Park, for example, is the two-block main centerpiece to Arista Place, representing a modern interpretation of a traditional town square incorporating a performing water feature, bandstand, and outdoor fireplace. Red Point Ridge is the social park for residents of Arista and is inspired by the geography of Colorado with a climbing wall that is a scale representation of the Continental Divide from the Eisenhower Tunnel to the Moffat Tunnel.

Shepsfield Park, named for Broomfield’s infamous canine toll booth companion Shep, incorporates a dog park and a large open lawn. The park is within the flight path for Jefferson County Airport and is designed in the profile of a very famous beagle, Snoopy, when viewed from above. Terrace Ponds also includes sports fields, a large loop trail, and created wetlands. And Uptown Park features another trail as well as an overlook that serves as a great place to eat lunch and take in the views.

Transit to and from Arista is facilitated by an RTD Park n Ride station that includes more than 900 parking spaces and provides service along several metro area routes as well as special event transportation such as BroncosRide, BuffRide, CU vs. CSU games, RockiesRide, and RunRide.

Reflections from Local High School Graduates

Editor’s Note:

In the spirit of providing opportunities to give our young people a voice and a platform, Our Broomfield™ is pleased to continue a tradition. Each year, we look forward to inviting one senior from each of our three primary local high schools to share a reflection on growing up in Broomfield and their high school career on behalf of their class. We thank this year’s seniors for their thought provoking columns, and the entire staff of Our Broomfield sends all 2023 graduates sincere congratulations and best wishes for the future.

Grace Mosley Broomfield High School

Like many of my peers, I started my freshman year as a very different person than how I am leaving high school. This becomes very apparent when my mom goes around the table at family events and shows my relatives pictures of freshman me. Oftentimes I find myself judging the person that I used to be, thinking how bad her outfits were, or wondering how she could walk out the door with her hair looking like that. But the truth is, that none of us would be who we are today without the person in those pictures from 2019.

Since our first day of high school, we have all done things that our younger selves couldn’t fathom, like making it to state in a sport, becoming a lead in the school musical, or even just making it through the challenging and unpredictable four years of high school. Without these experiences, we wouldn’t have been able to grow into who we are today.

The first high school event I ever attended was the rival Broomfield Legacy football game, which we won. I remember being so excited to go to that game that I stood in my room for 30 minutes beforehand and practiced the cheers that the Blue Crew leaders taught us before the game. I was determined to be like the seniors. When I got to the game wearing my white jeans, broomfield jersey and blue face paint, surrounded by a sea of people dressed just like me, I knew this was going to be the place for me. I stood at the back of the bleachers with my friends and chanted with the rest of the school.

As the class of 2023, when we step out into the next adventures that will continue to form who we are, let us try and be like the freshman that we once were. Open minded, determined, and most importantly truly present and interested in what the world holds for us.

Four years later, walking down the hallway, I still recognize the people that stood on those bleachers with me. We have all watched each other grow into our identities and our passions. After this year, we will be going off to be a part of even bigger and better things. Some of us will be collegiate athletes, attending med school, continuing in performing arts, or beginning a career out in the world.

As the class of 2023, when we step out into the next adventures that will continue to form who we are, let us try and be like the freshman that we once were. Open minded, determined, and most importantly truly present and interested in what the world holds for us. Let us continue to seek opportunities for unity, chances to be influenced by new constructs, and be active in our growth to positively influence the world around us.

After graduation Grace will be attending Colorado State University to study biochemistry.

Lexie Lit Legacy High School

“Strong and proud, we’ll shout out loud. Let’s give up a cheer for LHS!”

Strong and proud; the perfect two words to explain how I feel about Leg acy High School. Thinking back to freshman orientation, I have to laugh. Walking through those LONG hallways and MILLIONS of classrooms, 14-year-old me was terrified. I only had the friends I knew from middle school, and they didn’t even make-up ⅓ of all the other freshmen I saw in the stands.

As I entered the big gym and sat with the few people I knew, we all listened as the seniors in front of us taught us our “Legacy Cheers.” Most of my friends were nervous to join the chants and be truly loud. However, as the fight song was taught to us, I got the power to feel loud. I yelled, “Strong and proud.” At that moment I really did feel strong and I felt proud to be going to Legacy High School.

Four years later, nothing has changed. As graduation is coming closer and closer, I find myself looking back on the past four years and my proudest moments. All of them have one thing in common; being part of a community. From football games at Friday night lights and senior desserts, to haunted houses and spring pep rallies, I felt a part of a larger community. Legacy helped me feel like I was never alone. Even though I walked the hallways as a freshman with hundreds of kids I didn’t know, and past classrooms I had never stepped foot in, I felt supported and guided.

Legacy taught me to find strength in weakness, and to turn my struggles into my power, and therefore something to be proud of. Although the last four years have been some of the hardest years of my life, they have been the best years of my life, and I must thank my friends, family, and my high school.

As I head onto college, I hope to carry a sense of community and pride with me everywhere I go. I hope to create that sense of community within the new school I join and show others the strength that I have learned. When I come across another hallway, or another group of kids I don’t know, I will feel a sense of comfort in knowing that soon I will find that community again. From the time that I graduate to when I’m 80-years-old in my living room with my kids, I will tell them stories about Legacy High and how I am, and forever will be, a Legacy Bolt.

After graduation, Lexie will be attending CU Boulder and studying behavioral neuroscience, as well as running track and field.

Although the last four years have been some of the hardest years of my life, they have been the best years of my life, and I must thank my friends, family, and my high school.

Lessons of working towards something greater than myself is the main lesson that comes to mind from my four years of high school through athletics. I take this lesson with pride into everyday life.

Patrick Cavanaugh

Holy Family High School

As graduation is on the horizon, it is hard not to be bittersweet as my fouryear journey comes to an end. Recalling all the friendships that I have made and all the things I have learned, Holy Family has prepared me for the journey ahead. Holy Family has taught me lessons in life that I will never forget and that will influence me for the rest of my life. I am thankful for everything I have learned through athletics, academics, and relationships at Holy Family. I am eternally grateful and proud to be a part of the Holy Family community for the past four years.

Holy Family gave me an experience that pushed me academically in the mind, body, and spirit in all things that I did. Through these lessons, I am confident that Holy Family has prepared me for my next coming years at the University of Notre Dame as my teachers and peers have constantly pushed me in every aspect of my life.

Even though academics were an essential part of my growth and development at Holy Family, I developed and learned the most from my times on the track and cross country team. I learned the ideals of relationships and brotherhood through these experiences on the team as I have become close with many people throughout my years. These experiences on the team and the people I have met have taught me lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life. Lessons of working towards something greater than myself is the main lesson that comes to mind from my four years of high school through athletics. I take this lesson with pride into everyday life through my work for others as a captain on the track team, but also with my friends and family by trying to help people in any kind of way.

I can say with the uttermost certainty that Holy Family has prepared me for the next stage of my life. I have been taught lessons everyday in Holy Family by my teachers, coaches, and friends that I will take with me to college. Through its rigorous curriculum and dedication to its students, Holy Family will continue to influence and lead me down the road of success for my life at the University of Notre Dame.

Patrick will be studying electrical engineering at Notre Dame.

It’s Better Hearing Month

Take the Time to Get Your Precious Ears Checked!

NNoise, noise, noise. Everywhere around you is noise. And too much of that noise for an extended period of time can be bad for your hearing. May is “Better Hearing Month” and the dedicated team over at Family Hearing wants to make sure you know about getting your hearing checked since everyday sounds threaten to damage your hearing. Chelsea Walters, BS, BC-HIS, local expert at Family Hearing, took time on a sunny Saturday to talk to us about what we can do to protect one of our most precious senses, our hearing.

Quiet places are hard to come by these days. More cars on the roads lead to more traffic noise and all of our favorite songs can be cranked up at the touch of a button. Everywhere you look you find people using earbuds, whether for their pump-up tunes working out or a podcast for background noise while they grocery shop. Our ears were not designed to handle the amount of noise that surrounds us daily and because of that we are seeing more people at risk of acquiring hearing loss.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 15% of those 18 and up report some trouble hearing. That’s significant, especially for the younger generations, considering that the hair cells in the inner ear can never regenerate. This means that damage to your hearing is permanent.

There are simple everyday things we can do to protect our hearing, however. Having ear plugs on-hand can help you to stay protected when a loud environment surprises you. Downloading sound level meter applications like NIOSH on your cell phone can help you to monitor the volume of your environment. Ideally this means ensuring you are in soundscapes that measure 70 dB HL or less. Not to mention, you can even set volume level limits on your devices. For Apple this means navigating to ‘Headphone Safety’

under Settings ‘Sounds and Haptics.’ For Android this means finding ‘Media Volume Limit’ under Settings ‘Sounds and Vibrations.’

Hearing loss can be caused by a single noise event at a high intensity like a gunshot, or a long exposure to an elevated audio input like a concert, work environment or regular earbud use.

Our ears were not designed to handle the amount of noise that surrounds us daily and because of that we are seeing more people at risk of acquiring hearing loss.

Let’s face it, noise happens and earbud use is popular. If you use earbuds regularly, Chelsea recommends following the 60/60 rule. Listen through your ear gear for 60 minutes at 60% of the volume capacity of your device. Then give your ears a much-needed rest. Chelsea says “Noise exposure is a lot like sun exposure. You want to be aware how intense the source is, how long the exposure lasts and be sure to take breaks. Just like your skin likes time in the shade, your ears function optimally when they get some time in the quiet.”

Family Hearing is the longest serving, most awarded hearing care practice in the area with its Broomfield location on Nickel Street and Midway Boulevard. This year they are celebrating their 60th year helping the community preserve and improve their hearing. They recommend annual hearing checks starting in middle life and encourage all earbud users to have a baseline hearing test with regular monitoring. If you are short on time, consider stopping by and visiting them at our Broomfield Community Center every 4th Tuesday of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. They offer quick 15-minute screenings and advice regarding any ear-related question. That said, their team would love to get to know you and your goals in the office to provide a demonstration of how technology like hearing protection or hearing devices can sustain your hearing health.

Meet Family and Friends at Broomfield’s Annual Summer Sundays Festivals

Broomfield’s Summer Sundays Festivals are back. “Summer Sundays are a community tradition here in Broomfield and the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities (BCAH) is honored to be the organizer for these and many other events,” explained BCAH Executive Director Keri Dillingham.

Dillingham said one of her many goals for the organization ever since the onset of COVID three years ago has been to remain sustainable and continue to grow the organization and enrich the cultural landscape of Broomfield with a variety of diverse and creative programs.

She and her team are clearly meeting that goal. BCAH continues to serve Broomfield well with more than 55 events, creative stations, and sessions per year, presented by its staff, program directors, and fiscal sponsor groups. And in 2022, her leadership skills, along with BCAH’s board members and volunteers, guided BCAH through its largest growth phase in its 50-year history.

“One of BCAH’s goals is to offer a creative community,” she said. “A place for creatives [artists; performers; inventors] to express themselves in any medium from storytelling to music to theatre, and, at the same time, give residents diverse experiences right here in their own community,” she added.

“BCAH has been providing these free festivals for decades to ensure Broomfielders have access to interactive, outdoor experiences that are family-friendly, creative, and artistically and culturally diverse,” Dillingham said. “There’s something for everyone at these events.”

The popular Summer Sundays Festivals include interactive stations that are hosted by local creative and cultural groups. Each event starts at 4:00 p.m. with creative booths, face painting, balloon artists, and more, followed by a live concert from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the back porch of the farmhouse.

Bring family, friends, and neighbors, your lawn chairs, and a bit of spending money for food trucks, so you can relax, eat, and groove to the music.

The arts council was founded in 1973 and was originally a city-funded organization. As Broomfield grew, BCAH became an independent non-profit funded by individual and family donors, grants, and business sponsors. It is still a strong partner with the city, including partnering on many programs, supporting Broomfield Sister Cities and the annual Student Art Show organized with the recreation services department.

Summer Sundays Festivals

Don’t forget to mark your calendar: From 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sundays, June 11, July 9, and August 13 at Broomfield’s famed Brunner Farmhouse & Gardens at 640 Main St. in Broomfield. Admission is free but be sure to bring some money for food truck vendors and don’t forget your lawn chairs and enthusiasm.

Throughout the year, BCAH presents free events created by its staff and high quality-lower cost events developed by its

program directors. It also serves as an umbrella organization providing administrative infrastructure and financial management for local groups. BCAH programs include the Broomfield Days Poster contest, Aster Women’s Choir, Broomfield Community Players, Science+Art Experiences, and of course the Summer Sundays Festivals. BCAH promotes its events via its newsletter and social media channels.

Before becoming executive director and later a Heart of Broomfield in the Arts awardee, Dillingham used her business acumen, marketing and writing expertise, and background in psychology in other meaningful capacities.

Keeping Creativity Alive in Broomfield

For as low as $35 per year, you can make a big difference in your community by donating to this long standing nonprofit and receive a mailed newsletter keeping you updated on Broomfield arts and entertainment news and events. Your donation supports program administration costs, outreach events, free entertainment, and more. Visit ArtsInBroomfield.org to donate.

A longtime resident, she relocated to Broomfied 23 years ago to attend CU Boulder. Today she continues her work at BCAH to ensure that the community she calls “home” is a vibrant place to work, live, and visit. The 2023 Summer Sundays Festival line-up includes:

June 11: Groove N’ Motion - Groove ‘N Motion has wow’d Broomfield residents on its 4th of July event with its entertaining and upbeat performances. Groove N’ Motion features a 5-piece horn line, four outstanding and energizing vocalists, and a rockin’ five-piece rhythm section. Party Food for Spring & Summer Celebrations

Celebration food is so much fun!

Whenever I am invited to a party, I must remind myself to go directly to the hosts of the party and greet them before heading to the food table. I get THAT excited about the food. I also end the party by cleaning up (directly into my mouth) much of the remaining food. I have been told many times that I eat with gusto. I would say that is an excellent word to describe me.

I can always find a reason to have a celebration. Have an evening off from running kids around? Have a make your own pizza night. Finished a big project at work? End dinner with a build your own ice cream sundae extravaganza. The kids have good grades? Eat dessert first! The kids are gone for the evening and you have the house to yourselves? Sounds like dinner by candlelight to me.

Let us get some spring parties started with these easy recipes. They do well sitting out for longer periods of time and also work well when made ahead of time. Cheers to warm weather!

Grilled Lemon Chicken Salad

• 2 pounds boneless chicken breasts, halved and skin removed

Directions: Whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and thyme. Pour the sauce and chicken into a plastic bag to marinate in the refrigerator for six hours or overnight. Heat a grill on medium and cook the chicken breasts for 10 minutes on each side, until just cooked through. Cool slightly and cut diagonally in 1/2-inch-thick slices.

For the grilled chicken salad:

• 2 lbs. grilled lemon chicken, sliced

• ¼ cup fresh lemon juice

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 1 cup raw sugar snap peas, stems and strings removed

• 1 each red and yellow bell pepper, julienned

• 1 lemon thinly sliced

• Kosher salt and pepper to taste

Directions: Chill the sliced chicken. When chilled, toss the chicken with the remaining ingredients and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve cold or room temperature.

Fig & Truffle Tart

Grilled Lemon Chicken Salad

For the grilled chicken:

Ingredients:

• 3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (4 lemons)

• 3/4 cup good olive oil

• 2 teaspoons kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves (1/2 teaspoon dried)

and Truffle Tart

• 1 roll Pillsbury pizza dough

• ¾ cup fig jam

• 1 large wheel brie cheese, sliced thin

• 1 ½ cups shredded Monterey jack cheese, more or less to preference

• Truffle oil

• ½ cup chopped cilantro, optional

Directions: Unroll pizza dough and place on a greased sheet pan. Bake 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove pizza dough from oven, allow to cool a few minutes. Next spread the fig jam all over the pizza crust. Arrange the sliced brie on top of the jam. Sprinkle shredded Monterey jack cheese over the entire pizza. Bake for another 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Remove from oven and drizzle 1-2 tbsp. truffle oil over pizza. Top with chopped cilantro if desired. Cut into smaller bite size squares and enjoy! Serve warm or room temperature.

Centura Spine and Neurological Associates Now Open at Avista Campus

Centura Health is proud to introduce Centura Spine and Neurosurgical Associates to the Avista Adventist Hospital campus. Last summer the clinic opened and it has made an impact on the local community’s accessibility to quality Spinal Neurological care.

The team at Centura Spine and Neurosurgical Associates is led by neurosurgeons Lee Nelson, MD and Sharad Rajpal, MD, who are board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Their team is rounded out by a dedicated nurse practitioner and talented physician assistants who all work together to ensure that their patients receive the most comprehensive compassionate care available.

The providers at the clinic believe that high quality care comes from treating patients and their families with dignity and respect while taking pride in patient outcomes. Dr. Nelson and Dr. Rajpal are both enthusiastic about developing innovative non-surgical and surgical treatments for their patients, based on open communication and thoughtful consideration of each patient as an individual. They enlist a strong commitment

to excellence and continuous improvement for patients that have entrusted the team with their care.

The team at Centura Spine and Neurosurgical Associates treats patients for a variety of reasons and one that most people are familiar with is back pain. Eight out of 10 Americans will experience back pain caused by mechanical or structural problems in the spine, discs, muscles, or ligaments. If the problem is caused by an accident or degeneration due to age, it is best to see a specialist who can help decide on a treatment plan that is made specifically for you as an individual. Whether patients are suffering from a herniated disc or seeking relief from scoliosis, the dedicated team at Centura Spine and Neurosurgical Associates will figure out the best way to achieve much-needed pain relief and get patients back to the activities they enjoy most.

The providers will partner with their patients and educate them on their conditions so they can make informed decisions that fit best with their health goals. Patients who have the same diagnosis may need or desire completely different interventions, which is why it is best to

trust your physician to help navigate through the entire care process, from initial consultation to the end of treatment.

Some patients choose to go the surgical path and the facilities at Avista Adventist Hospital are state-of-the-art with the most advanced equipment and cutting-edge technologies. Dr. Nelson and Dr. Rajpal are some of the most experienced surgeons in our area for using these advanced technologies like spine navigation and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) predictive modeling. A.I. can help doctors make treatment plans by collecting data from 1,000s of patients across the United States and comparing outcomes to see which path is best for each patient individually. By using these advanced technologies, not only is the patient’s recovery time quicker, but Dr. Rajpal and Dr. Nelson are able to work smarter, safer, and more efficiently, giving their patients a greater outcome.

At Centura Spine and Neurosurgical Associates the goal is to help patients get back to the activities they enjoy most. They are committed to providing individual compassionate patient care for all spinal and neurological conditions.
