EDITOR FROM THE Our Pauses

Each month in this column I select a word to center my thoughts around. Last month the word was enough and the thought was that if we have enough it is incumbent on us to share with others. As the holiday season continues to roll, this is a thought to hold on to and in these pages you will find numerous opportunities to engage with your community and give to others. Notably, The Broomfield Community Foundation’s Annual Campaign is still underway and is a great place to donate with benefits that will ripple throughout Broomfield. You can donate quickly and easily at https://www. broomfieldfoundation.org/.

In November I had a somewhat serious health scare. One that stopped me cleanly and abruptly in my tracks for a few weeks. I am fine and I will be fine, but it was a moment of clarity cloaked in haze. The life we build can sometimes take over. And we become consumed by the entries on the calendar and what’s next. Can you relate?

So I am thinking about this generally in how I live day to day and I am thinking of it specifically as I continue to recover and prepare to enjoy the holiday season with loved ones.

We know it. We say it. But do we live it? Christmas is not about the prettiest tree or the fanciest lights. It is not about the most elaborate gifts or the most expensive meal. It is about time, love, community, tradition, and the loved ones around us. It is about helping someone in need. I don’t mean to write this hypocritically in this particular issue - our annual food and gift guide - because the season is also about giving (see paragraph one), and that is about gifts, but as you embark on your holiday activities, I invite you to pause with me - reflectively and intentionally.

Maybe you can do less. Maybe you can spend less. Maybe you can engage more. Broomfield offers numerous opportunities to meet and join with friends and neighbors in music and celebration. Check out our calendar for some ideas. Patronize a local restaurant with someone dear or with a lonely neighbor. You don’t have to do it all. Choose a few things that matter. Make a few things really matter this season. Embrace the season, but with a pause.

Merry Christmas and thanks for reading,

BUSY FAMILIES

Rest is More Than Sleep

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year but can also be extremely exhausting. When you are running on empty the first thing we think of is I need more sleep! There are many ways to rest your body. Here are a few situations to be aware of and ways to keep your engine full while keeping up with all the excitement of the season.

Be mindful of what is causing your irritation and build in steps to free your senses.

Mental rest is as important as physical sleep. When our minds are tired we tend to be quick to think negatively which is very draining. An example could be when your partner asks where something is and you are quick to respond with irritation. Or maybe the kids want a snack and you immediately feel mad that they can’t get one themselves. Signs you need a mental break include mental fog, irritability, avoiding tasks where you could make an error, and feeling down. When you feel the mental drain happening, try going for a walk outside or do a few yoga stretches. Anything that uses your body and not your mind. Sensory overload is another very real thing. On the daily we have to deal with it at home and at work. Bright fluorescent lights. Loud blow dryers. Heavy perfume smells. Sometimes you don’t know why you are being jarred by loud sounds or don’t feel like being touched. Maybe you are stressed listening to loud chatter in a crowded room. Be mindful of what is causing your irritation and build in steps to free your senses. Wear noise canceling headphones. Listen to the birds outside. Remove yourself from the situation and do some deep breathing in a quiet space.

Social rest is something that is hard to do during the holidays. Our calendars are bursting at the seams. However it is so important to pay attention to who you are spending time with. Those who lift your spirits and bring your heart joy should be at the top of your list. You know

you are with the right people if after spending hours with them, you leave feeling alive, excited to see them again, and very peaceful. Spiritual rest is at the top of my list to work on in 2025. This is having the ability to take time for yourself without feeling the guilt that you are being lazy or selfish. We show up for this world at our highest level when we connect with a higher power. Spiritual connection can be going to church, being out in nature on a hike, meditation, a long bike ride. Anything that feels restorative to you. Anything that calms your body and mind and reminds you that you are not responsible for everything going on in this world and it is okay to rest. No guilt.

As we navigate this busy season, let’s love each other not only with words, but with enough self-care so that we can show up overflowing with peace and love. Happiest of holidays to you all!

Celebrating Safely for the Holidays

Decorating homes and businesses is a longstanding tradition around the holiday season. It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but if you’re not careful, holiday decorations can increase your risk of a home fire. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart.

Lights and Candles

Almost half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles. Christmas Day is the peak day for candle fires.

Consider using batteryoperated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.

If you do use lit candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily. Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires. Read the manufacturer’s instructions on light strands for the recommended (maximum) number of light strands to connect together.

Holiday Trees

If you choose to have a live tree in your home, water your tree every day. A dry tree is dangerous because it can catch on fire easily. Natural trees should be cut at a 45 degree

angle at the base and placed in water.

Place the tree at least three feet away from heat sources.

Use only non-flammable decorations on the tree. Use only lighting evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Inspect lights for frayed wire or other defects before putting them on your tree. Do not leave lights on unattended.

Keep natural tree stands filled with water at all times. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly.

Visit the City and County of Broomfield’s Emergency Preparedness website, a Broomfield community resource that guides preparation and response to potential hazards and threats, at Broomfield.org/Emergency.

Slow Cooker Refuel After Holiday Shopping

am in love with Beef Ragu at the moment. You can make it ahead of time, keep it in a crock pot or make it fresh. It is a perfect meal for guests with a salad and bread, and can also be made in big quantities and frozen for later use. It is a good meal to come home to after a long day of holiday shopping.

Slow Cooker Beef Ragu with Pasta

Ingredients:

Ragu

• 2.5 lbs. chuck beef or other slow cooking beef cut, cut into equal 4 pieces

• 1 tbsp. salt

• Black pepper

• 3 tbsp. olive oil, separated

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 onion, diced

• 1 cup carrots, diced

• 1 cup celery, diced

• 28 oz. crushed canned tomatoes

• 3 tbsp. tomato paste

• 2 beef bouillon cubes, crumbled

• 1 cup red wine, full bodied (like merlot, cabernet sauvignon), or sub with beef broth/stock

• 1 1/2 cups water

• 3/4 tsp. dried thyme or 3 sprigs fresh thyme

• 3 dried bay leaves

To Serve (Not all Sauce is used)

• 1 lb. dried pappardelle, or other pasta of choice

• Freshly grated parmesan cheese or parmigiano reggiano for topping

• Fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional) for topping

Instructions

Pat beef dry and sprinkle with salt and pepper

Sear Beef: Heat 1 tbsp. olive oil over high heat in a heavy based pot. Add beef and sear each piece aggressively on all sides until very browned (3 - 5 minutes in total), then remove onto a plate. Turn stove down to medium low and add remaining 2 tbsp. of olive oil.

Add garlic and onion and sauté for 2 minutes. Then add the carrots and celery and sauté slowly for 5 minutes.

Add remaining Ragu ingredients and return the beef to the pot (including pooled juices). Turn the stove up and bring it to a simmer, then turn it down to low so it's bubbling very very gently.

Slow cook: Cover the pot and let it cook for 2 hours or until beef is tender enough to shred.

Shred: Remove beef then coarsely shred with 2 forks. Return beef to the pot. Simmer for 30 minutes until sauce is reduced and thickened - beef will soften slightly more during this step.

To Serve:

Bring a very large pot of water with 1 tbsp.of salt to the boil.

Add pasta and cook for 1 minute less than the recommended cooking time as per the packet instructions.

Meanwhile, place 5 cups of the Ragu in a very large fry pan or dutch oven. Heat over high heat while the pasta is cooking.

When the pasta is ready, transfer it directly from the pot into the fry pan or dutch oven using tongs.

Add 3/4 cup of pasta water into your pan.

Gently toss the pasta (I use 2 wooden spoons) for 1 to 2 minutes, until the sauce water evaporates and leaves you with a thick Ragu sauce that coats the pasta.

Enjoy!

Broomfield High School

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees Announced 2024

Class to be Honored December 21

Broomfield High School will be holding its third annual Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on December 21 at 4:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Community Center.

The 2024 Hall of Fame class includes four incredible athletes, two legendary coaches, an invaluable contributor, and two championship teams.

Athletes to be inducted at the event include Brittany WinansStark, Jenni Smith-Burton, Larry Smith, and Brandon Lupo.

Winans-Stark played soccer at Broomfield from 2011 until 2014. She was an All-State performer all four seasons and as a senior became the first Eagles Girls Soccer player to be named an All-American.

Smith-Burton competed for the Girl's Basketball team at Broomfield from 1996 until 2000, never finishing a season outside the Final Four. She was twice named first-team All-State and was named Colorado Player of the Year in 2000.

Larry Smith’s athletic prowess at Broomfield High School is unmatched. As a senior Smith was named 1992 Colorado Football Player of the Year, broke the career scoring for the Eagle Boy’s Basketball program, qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament, and was drafted as an outfielder by the Kansas City Royals.

Brandon Lupo is among the best boy’s tennis players in the history of Broomfield High School. Lupo brought home the #1 Singles Title in 2005, the first individual Eagles player to be crowned a state champion.

The two coaches and one contributor to be inducted this

year include former Boys Basketball coach Al Gardner, former Football coach Larry Allen, and former Broomfield Parks and Recreation director John Ferraro.

Gardner started the Eagles Boy’s Basketball program in 1960 and served as its first head coach. During his tenure, he set the bar high for the program winning the state championship in 1967.

Larry Allen spent only four seasons at the helm of the Eagles football program, but in that short time, he accomplished much. Allen’s teams finished 44-7, winning state championships in 1981, 1983, and 1984.

John Ferraro spent 35 years working with Broomfield Parks and Recreation, serving as director from 2002 until 2011. His work with the department has had an immeasurable impact on the success of Broomfield High School athletics.

The two teams being highlighted are the 1981 State Championship Football team and the 1999 State Championship Boy’s Soccer team. Coached by Larry Allen, the 1981 Football team was among the most dominant teams in the school’s history. Finishing with an 11-2 record, the team posted seven shutouts, allowing what remains a school record, of only 5.4 points per game.

The 1999 Boy’s Soccer team was the first state championship team for longtime Eagles soccer coach Jim Davidson. The team kicked off a soccer dynasty at Broomfield and unleashed a flood of over two dozen state championships that have been won by Broomfield student-athletes in the twenty-first century.

If you’d like to participate in this great community event, tickets are $40, the cost of which includes dinner. Contact Jennifer Dunn at Broomfield High School at (720) 561-5380 or jennifer.s.dunn@bvsd.org for ticket information.

Broomfield Recognized among Large Colorado Communities ECONOMIC LEADER

The City and County of Broomfield was recognized as the 2024 Large Community of the Year by the Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC). The prestigious award for communities with populations over 60,000 celebrates Broomfield’s commitment to fostering economic growth through strategic financial support, active board participation, and effective advocacy. The award was announced at EDCC’s annual Drive|Lead|Succeed Conference in October in Beaver Creek.

“Like many other communities, Broomfield has been challenged to redefine what the future community looks like and how to incorporate changing values, sustainable practices, financial restraints, and evolving technology."

The EDIE Awards recognize outstanding achievements across various sectors, including communities, organizations, companies, and legislators. Since its inception in 1989, EDCC has honored more than 200 award winners.

The City of Lakewood, the City of Fort Collins and the City of Colorado Springs are recent recipients of the award in the Large Community category. Broomfield previously won the award in 2010 and 1997.

“On behalf of the City and County of Broomfield, I am honored to accept the EDCC Award for the Large Community of the Year,” said Mayor Guyleen Castriotta. “Like many other communities, Broomfield has been challenged to redefine what the future community looks like and how to incorporate changing values, sustainable practices, financial restraints, and evolving technology. Being mindful of all of those critical elements has contributed to making Broomfield a dynamic and thriving place to live, work, grow, learn, and play.”

The city outlined notable contributions it has made through

initiatives that secure primary jobs and demonstrate a robust dedication to creating a vibrant and resilient local economy. This includes securing annual funding that provided more than $120,000 in 2023 to assist small businesses in growth and improvements. The Entrepreneurship Grant Program additionally supported five startups with $21,300 in funding.

The City of Broomfield also facilitated more than $1 billion in investments across catalytic redevelopment initiatives, aiming to reinvigorate areas underused due to suburbanization and deindustrialization. Broomfield’s initiatives include mixed-use developments that combine housing, commercial spaces, and community amenities supported by more than $100 million in public investments.

To attract businesses and help them grow in Broomfield, the city oversaw the development and redevelopment of more than 3.5 million square feet of commercial and industrial space in 2023. Key industries in Broomfield include aerospace, bioscience, and advanced manufacturing.

Finally, Broomfield highlighted its housing and workforce programs, including its inaugural Down Payment Assistance Program and Inclusionary Housing Ordinance to ensure the availability of middle-income housing. In addition, the workforce department served 562 employers, hosted nearly 14,000 job seeker visits and surpassed Colorado’s employment rate averages for job seekers.

“The City and County of Broomfield’s dedication to sustainable growth and deep-rooted community engagement is truly inspiring,” said EDCC Executive Director Kim Woodworth. “Their efforts set a high standard for others to follow and exemplify the power of strategic, longterm investment in building thriving communities.”

Dan Casey, Deputy City and County Manager, Broomfield Mayor Guyleen Castriotta, and Linda Anderson, Workforce Specialist.

Broomfield Debuts Residential Waste Services Program

f you’re frustrated with multiple large trashhauling trucks lumbering up and down your street on any given day, you’re in luck. A single-hauler contract provider has been approved by the Broomfield City Council.

On the other hand, those wishing to retain their own provider will be charged an monthly $10.50 opt-out fee.

Broomfield City Councilmembers recently enacted an ordinance that will allow Waste Connections of Colorado to be contracted to provide residential waste and recycling services.

This new Residential Waste Services program is for residents of single-family homes and small multi-family complexes (think, townhomes) with seven or fewer units who do not live in an HOA.

“The downside of this is eliminating opportunities and competition in the market,” explained former Broomfield Councilmember Kevin Jacobs. “The benefits include reduced wear on city-maintained streets, less pollution, and lower consumer costs by taking competitive bids to serve parts of the city not covered through an HOA.”

For more information, plan on attending a Residential Waste Services Open House from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, Dec. 14 in the lobby of the George DiCiero City and County Building, 1 DesCombes Drive.

Councilmember James Marsh-Holschen agrees. “Broomfield has abysmal waste diversion rates. So, including recycling at no extra cost while also incentivizing residents to pay less if they recycle more, is an important first step in increasing our diversion rates. More trash diversion means less greenhouse gases being emitted from landfills, which in turn benefits the air quality in the entire Front Range.”

Still, not all residents required to participate are happy about the upcoming Residential Waste Services program. It’s estimated that some 15,000 residential units will be included in this service, Mr. Marsh-Holschen explained.

Every-Other-Week Recycle Collection 95 gallon – included. Seniors (age 65+) and veterans get a 10% discount. Call Waste Connections at (303) 288-2100 for information.

Information courtesy City and County of Broomfield

Some Broomfield residents living on the north and south sides of Midway Blvd. expressed concern regarding whether or not the new trash hauler will continue to service their waste and recycling bins via the alleys behind their houses. At this time homeowners are still waiting for clarification from Broomfield staff and Waste Connections of Colorado. But Mr. Marsh-Holschen offers, “The enhanced attention that will come from the City and County of Broomfield’s enforcement of customer service standards will improve quality for all residents.”

Community members may choose to opt out by completing a form on Waste Connections website via www.Broomfield.org/ ResidentialWasteServices. The fee to opt out is $10.50/month and will be billed monthly by the City and County of Broomfield with your utility bill.

Revenues generated by this monthly service fee will be used to support waste diversion programs such as the Broomfield Recycling Center and the Tree Branch Recycling program. Questions regarding collection services can be directed to Waste Connections at (303) 288-2100 or via email at customerservice5311@ wasteconnections.com.

Dentistry Isn’t Expensive, Neglect is

Let the Team at Mata Dental Meet Your Needs

When considering the most important ways of focusing on our health, dental hygiene ranks high on the list.

At Mata Dental, the dental professionals are focused on helping patients maintain optimal oral health and wellness. They understand that no two patients have the exact same needs, and the staff is well-equipped to handle both routine checkups andmore complicated procedures.

“We treat our patients like we would want our family to be treated. We do not 'sell' dentistry. We do what is medically necessary and only what is medically necessary for our patients' care,” Explained Ginny Mata, Mata Dental office manager and wife of Dr. Lyndon Mata. “We educate our patients about good dental health, and how to maintain it. We also try to help patients navigate their insurance plans.”

Numerous health practitioners say that good overall health starts in the mouth. Practicing good dental hygiene at home and coming in for regular check-ups is important. This also helps prevent losing teeth as you age. Many people say they will pull their teeth, if they go bad. “This is a terrible idea,” Ms.

“Our patients frequently say that (Stella) is the reason they love going to the dentist."

“We treat our patients like we would want our family to be treated. We do not 'sell' dentistry. We do what is medically necessary and only what is medically necessary for our patients' care.”

Mata makes clear. “Dentures/partials will never give you the same chewing function as your natural teeth.”

Mata Dental makes use of advanced dental technology and welcomes new and existing clients in a friendly and caring manner. They understand how stressful going to the dentist can be and strive to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed while in the office. You can be assured that the staff and Dr. Mata are happy to answer any questions and address all concerns.

Ms. Mata reiterated that helping patients is what they enjoy most.

“Very few people enjoy going to the dentist. If we can get them over that, we feel we did our best.”

And at Mata Dental, they have what most dental offices lack. A surprise perk, you might say. Stella, their French bulldog, is the office greeter and comforter.

“Our patients frequently say that she's the reason they love going to the dentist. That hurts Dr. Mata's feelings only a little,” jokes Ms. Mata.

“Dr. Mata understands that going to the dentist is not the most fun.” But she adds, patients appreciate his 32-years of expertise and commitment to quality dentistry. Providing expert, safe, and confidential treatment, the team at

Mata Dental listens to their patients in a welcoming and comfortable environment.

Meet Dayna Scott

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. The goal of Our People: Meet “insert name” is to introduce Broomfield change-makers and highlight their contributions.

ABOUT DAYNA

Dayna and her husband, Ken, have lived in Broomfield for 15 years with their dog, Roxy.

She has been the Executive Director of Broomfield Fellowship In Serving Humanity (FISH) for nearly 10 years. FISH is Broomfield’s food and family resource center serving low-income Broomfield neighbors in need. The nonprofit-which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year--strives to prevent hunger and homelessness in our community.

When not working, Dayna can be found hiking, biking, reading, skiing, dancing, or cooking.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: The people – staff, volunteers, participants, and donors. They give me hope for the future.

Q: Tell us a little about your career path.

A: My career path was more like a switchback on a mountainside. I was a debater in both high school and college, and on track to become a lawyer. But I took a year off after I graduated and participated in the Americorps VISTA program. When my VISTA term was done, I became the Director at a nonprofit in Vermont. I did that for twenty years and helped start a school-based mentoring program, a substance abuse counseling program, and other programs. I moved to Colorado in 2009 and worked for the Longmont Community Justice Partnership, and then Project VOYCE, before finding FISH. I have spent most of my life in the nonprofit sector and find it challenging and rewarding.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?

A: A long-time favorite restaurant is Burns Pub. They have the best fish and chips and make a mean Old Fashioned. As for parks, I really couldn't choose – the open space is one of the reasons we moved here.

Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?

A: As an extrovert, I find most people I meet interesting. I am inspired by all the female leaders in our community. Our many FISH volunteers are also amazing.

Q: What do you find most satisfying about FISH?

A: I like the immediacy of our work with neighbors in need. People come to us on their worst days, often in crisis, and leave smiling, feeling more hopeful, and with a shopping cart full of food.

Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?

A: We fell in love with the views from Lac Amora and the nearby trails. But what makes Broomfield unique is the strong sense of community.

Q. What advice would you give people living in or relocating to Broomfield?

A: Volunteer! Pick a charity and donate your time and talents. I think this is the best way to get to know Broomfield.

Q: Who or what inspires you to be a better person?

A: During her lifetime, my mom struggled in so many ways. Seeing her persevere -- despite obstacles -- inspired me to be of service to those who have less power and privilege.

Conquering Back Pain: Essential Tips for a Healthy Spine

For 55-year-old Mike Ross, living with back pain deterred him from doing the things he loved most. “I found it more and more discouraging to try to engage in the physical activities that I love and keep me centered (snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, etc.),” said Mike. “Even mild hikes would lead to numbness and pain in my low back, hips, and legs. By the end of a hike or half day of fishing, I would lose coordination and balance and the next day I could barely walk.”

Mike knew it was time to seek help and felt very fortunate to have found his neurosurgeon, Dr. Sharad Rajpal at AdventHealth Avista. “Dr. Rajpal recommended fusion of L4-L5 and laminectomy to relieve my spine and other nerves from compression,” said Mike. “I did a lot of research on surgeonsDr. Rajpal has an impeccable reputation.”

Today, Mike is back doing the things that make him feel whole. If you’re living with back pain, Mike encourages you to do your research and find a doctor who is right for you. “This surgery has made so many things possible that were not before due to pain and numbness,” said Mike. “Dr. Rajpal and nurse Jen saved me from having to give up so many things I love. I can't thank them enough!”

Did you know back pain is one of the main causes for adults to miss work in the U.S.? Having a healthy and strong back is essential to maintaining a strong body and helps reduce the risk of developing debilitating neck or back pain. Dr. Rajpal shares advice on how to keep your spine healthy.

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight has many negative effects on the body, including placing additional strain on the back muscles, spine and entire body. Moderating calorie intake, eating a balanced diet, exercising, and losing any excess pounds can help reduce or even eliminate back pain.

2. Exercise Regularly

An easy way to reduce back pain is to get regular physical activity and exercise. Aerobic exercise helps fight inflammation, reduces tension, and releases hormones called endorphins that naturally reduce pain. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise three days a week.

3. Stretch and Strengthen

Stretching your back, spine, and the surrounding muscles helps increase flexibility and reduces soreness and tension, making you less likely to experience injuries. Strengthening your core, low back, and abdominal muscles helps support the spine and takes pressure off the lower back.

4. Reduce or Eliminate Inflammatory Foods

Limit foods like red meats, refined sugars, and processed foods that can increase inflammation. Instead, choose healthier anti-inflammatory, plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes.

5. Avoid Nicotine Products

Nicotine can reduce blood flow and limit the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the spine. Quitting nicotine products is critical because nicotine also contributes to poor wound healing, increases disc degeneration, and the risk for developing osteoporosis.

6. Improve Sleep

Getting proper sleep with your spine naturally aligned is imperative to maintaining a healthy spine. Back sleepers should place a pillow under their knees to reduce stress on the lower spine. Side sleepers should place a pillow between the legs to help keep the hips balanced. Having a good mattress that supports the spine in the right areas is also key.

Seek medical attention when neck or back pain is persistent, flares regularly, or never fully goes away. A medical provider can check for numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or any other indicators of nerve involvement. Although most instances of back or neck pain do not require surgery, your provider may refer you to a physical therapist, a physiatrist or pain management doctor, or spine surgeon for further work-up and examination.

If you’re experiencing back pain, speak with your doctor. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Rajpal, scan the QR code.
