FROM THE

EDITOR Our Valentines

EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Tina Eichner BUSINESS MANAGER

Pat Eichner ART DIRECTOR/DESIGN

Matthew Clark SALES COORDINATOR

On December 30 our greater community watched in disbelief as the horror of the Marshall Fire swirled around us. From the growing midday smoke carried by historically gusty winds, to the horrific scenes of raging fire that filled all media through the night, many of us sat paralyzed watching, waiting to see where the wind would shift next. This while thousands of others, our neighbors in nearby communities, actually ran for their lives, and first responders near and far including Broomfield’s finest, leapt into action ready to help however possible. And the help continued. Into the night, into the next morning, and through the days and weeks of the aftermath. And it still continues. We have tried to capture some of your noble and caring efforts to help our friends and neighbors in need in this issue. The striking thing about this tragedy, this fire, is that I think each of us can imagine it happening to us too. There has not been a day since the fire that I have not sat for a moment in my home and looked at the walls and the ceiling and the floor, and been so thankful for each and every nail and board. Through these weeks I have been struck by and touched by the great sense of fellowship and alliance all around, as people have banded together to help friends, acquaintances, and strangers alike. As we approach the two year mark since all of our lives were forever altered by this thing called Covid, and reflect on the many and numerous ways that our world has changed, one thing remains, stronger despite the constant strain: Our humanity. I have written it here before and will do so again, because I believe it. Difficult times come. Bad things happen. We get through it. We survive because of the compassion and support of those around us, and for the eternal promise for something better on the horizon. I hope that is a feeling that all those who have lost so much feel somewhere inside through the turmoil and tragedy. So as we take a moment to capture some of the good that was shared, I like to think of each act, each gesture, and each major project as a Valentine. Valentines for neighbors, for community, for family, and for humanity. Happy Valentines Day and thanks for reading,

Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

BUSY FAMILIES

Self Love Practice

This Valentines Day By Lisa Payne

What if this Valentine’s Day we all gave ourselves a gift? The gift of more self-love! This topic can go in a few different directions. The way most people will take this is to do more things for yourself. Take a walk, get a pedicure, play golf, go out to dinner, watch TV, take a bath, learn something new. The list of things we can do to take care of ourselves is endless. What I am referring to here is to practice self-love by being less judgmental and more compassionate with yourself. It’s easy to believe that your value comes from what you know or what you do or what you have. I identify with the “what I know” piece. I am an information junkie and can spend all day reading things and coming up with grand plans in my head for what to do with the knowledge. But then I freeze with information overload and nothing happens to my selfproclaimed brilliant ideas. To give you an example, I’ve been saving and creating and rewriting recipes for 20 years with the intent of writing a cookbook. But I have so many different ideas of types of cookbooks I want to write that it halts all progress because it feels overwhelming. I mean, where do I begin?

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

The same goes for decluttering my home. The sense of overwhelm from the huge project freezes me, and since I’m not “doing” the big thing I shame myself into thinking that my value is decreasing. I was like that in my career. If I wasn’t the best or didn’t work the hardest I feared I had no value. And then I would buy “things” with my hard earned money to show I had value … only to want to get rid of all that stuff later in life. It’s a vicious cycle that we have all struggled with. How much do you know? How much do you do? How much do you have? Ugh. To get back to my original point, I say we all practice more self-love. Write this quote where you can see it daily, which is a spin on one from Tara Mohr in her book “Playing Big”: “Our value doesn’t come from what we know, what we do or what we have; real value comes from who we ARE.” Let’s spend this Valentine’s Day (and every day for that matter) being kind to ourselves. Let’s stop shaming ourselves for the things we don’t do or know or have and start being grateful to ourselves for who we are. For being the best parent you can be. For always showing up for your friends and family. For thanking people who work the front line. For praying for those who need it the most. For always doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Life is hard, and sometimes being kind to yourself is harder. Give yourself permission to stop the self judgement and start loving on yourself for being exactly who you are.

Rallies Around Our Neighbors through Devastation of Marshall Fire By Jennifer Hoffman, Broomfield City and County Manager

The catastrophic impacts on our neighbors from the Marshall Fire are devastating. The City and County of Broomfield has and will continue to support our colleagues, employees, and friends in these communities for the long run as they embark on this difficult journey of recovery.

F

rom immediate and genuine acts of kindness, to complex and significant contributions, my admiration and awe goes out to the many Broomfield residents and employees who continue to step up to rally around others. I am deeply touched and my heart is warm with gratitude and pride to be a part of this community. Before the magnitude of the events unfolded, and without hesitation, the Broomfield Police Department (BPD) teams deployed first to support and assist other local agencies. From helping evacuate neighborhoods, providing security at the 1STBANK Center Evacuation Site, and reconnecting animals with loved ones, officers jumped into action to support those impacted most directly. When the time came to evacuate the Broomfield Detention Center for the first time in its 20 years of operation, BPD Leadership executed without incident to create a protocol for years to come. With experience hosting mass vaccination events during the past several months, our public health staff members played critical roles in setting up and operating an evacuation point at the 1STBANK Center. While serving as a safe location for families to reunite and create a plan, with the help of our Human Services team, eight families and a total of 18 people of all ages were able to find an emergency shelter to get through the night. Providing transportation for those displaced families, as well as being mobilized and staged, our Easy Ride fleet was prepared to assist with evacuations of area hospitals. While fortunately not needed, Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services teams prepared the Broomfield Community Center to be an additional shelter site, as well as assisted with transporting food and drink supplies to the evacuation site, and Incident Command Center at Flatiron Crossing Mall.

16

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

Throughout the quickly escalating events, Public Works staff provided steadfast support across disciplines. These included, but were not limited to, setting up stop signs for the signal damaged by the fire, coordinating with Xcel Energy to ensure water booster and lift stations could keep power as long as possible, and keeping Interlocken and Rocky Mountain Airport water tanks full to ensure Broomfield could combat the fire should it reach us. Various contributions can be counted among our teams even after the fire tore through our neighboring communities, leaving a path of destruction to repair for years to come. For example, utilities staff supported flushing the entire potable water system for both communities to expedite lifting the Boil Water Advisory and turning water services on and off throughout the threats. Two senior Building Division staff members spent the day after the fire helping with damage assessments. And facilities staff assisted with heating challenges in city facilities, while the Fleet Division continues to work on repairing damage sustained to police vehicles that were close to the fire. Of course offers to remain engaged continue with everything from providing water testing kits and analysis, to traffic cabinet service and many more. A huge shout out to the employees, residents, community non-profits, and business leaders of Broomfield who answered the call to help, or created new support services for those in need. Our community displayed the HEART OF BROOMFIELD through this crisis in ways words will never capture, but were felt when it mattered, and will be remembered when the recovery and rebuilding are complete.

Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital is

Open and Ready to Serve You! To our patients, neighbors, and communities, I would like to say thank you. Your outpouring of support for our hospital and our caregivers following the Marshall Fire, especially for those in our ministry who lost their homes, has been gracious and heartfelt, and for that we will be forever grateful.

In coordination with local authorities during the fire, our caregivers safely and swiftly evacuated all 51 patients in less than two hours, including babies in our neonatal intensive care unit. All caregivers safely evacuated soon after, and blessedly, there was no loss of life. Although the fire itself spared the building, smoke damage affected the interior. Our Avista teams and professional cleaning partners scrubbed every inch of our facility, and less than three weeks after the fire, we safely re-opened our doors to serve our communities. This included our Emergency Department, New Life Center, surgical areas, and all other services we provide. Words cannot describe how excited and proud I am to once again extend our healing Mission as we have since 1896. As wonderful as this is for our hospital and communities, we are sensitive to our colleagues who have suffered losses from the fire and the hundreds of neighbors whose homes burned while the hospital was spared. We will continue to lift them up in our prayers and support them as our community rebuilds.

In moments of darkness, our communities look to us for light; in moments of despair, they rely on us to provide them hope. I am grateful that we are once again providing light and hope through our ministry at Avista, and as our communities grow stronger following the fire, we will be by your side.

Airport Serves Important Aviation and Economic Roles IN NORTH METRO AREA By Kristen Beckman

Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (RMMA) opened in 1960 and has been owned and operated by Jefferson County continuously for 62 years. The airport, better known to many longtime area residents as Jeffco Airport, is Colorado’s fourth-busiest airport. Photo by Timothy Seibert, Flatirons Pro Media

The airport serves an important function in the National Airspace System. It is one of three reliever airports in the Denver Metro area. The primary function of a reliever airport is to relieve congestion at an air carrier airport by diverting general aviation traffic away from that airport, in this case Denver International Airport. Owned by Jefferson County, the airport sits on property midway between Denver and Boulder off Highway 36. Jefferson County bought 1,700 acres of land for the airport in 1959 and began operations the next year with one runway, a 600 square-foot hangar, a terminal building, and space for 17 aircraft.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

As aircraft operations increased, there was a need for an air traffic control tower. Construction began in 1965 and the original 62-foot tower went into operation in 1967. Shortly after, the airport became the busiest general aviation airport in Colorado. In 2005, the airport changed its name to RMMA to reflect its location between Denver and the Rocky Mountains. Throughout its six-decade history, the airport has evolved, adding runways, facilities, and services to accommodate local aviation needs. Aircraft operations and development activity have ebbed and flowed with the state of the overall economy, said Airport Director Paul Anslow. “While peak aeronautical activity occurred in 1977 with nearly 250,000 operations, the 2010s saw a strong recovery, from 120,000 operations in 2010 to nearly 190,000 operations in 2020,” he said. While the airport does not currently host scheduled air carrier service, it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as a public-use airport that can accommodate all types of aircraft. A staff of 25 people administer ground leases and financing of the airport, maintain the airfield to FAA standards, and provide airport-rescue and fire-fighting support. The airport has received numerous awards and national recognition for airfield safety and snow removal operations. Today, the airport serves as a significant economic generator in Jefferson County and along the US36 corridor, serving as a base

for three Fortune 500 flight departments, the aviation department of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, five aviation flight training schools, and many other on-field based businesses. In addition, the Jeffco US Forest Air Tanker base is on-site, providing crucial support to air tankers combating forest fires in Colorado and the mountain region. In total, a CDOT Economic Impact Study found that RMMA contributes over $700 million in economic activity to the region. “The airport is home to over 400 based aircraft, ranging from small aircraft built in the 1940s to business jets capable of flying direct to Europe,” said Anslow, whose responsibilities include negotiating future airport ground leases, identifying and implementing airport infrastructure projects, and even the occasional turn in a plow truck if needed. “Meanwhile, our on-field flight schools provide an excellent career track and are working hard to supply the significant demand for new pilots at commercial airlines.” He also noted RMMA is very approachable to the aviation-curious. “The terminal is a great venue for grabbing a bite to eat and watching aircraft taxi by just over the fence.” The airport terminal is home to Blue Sky Bistro as well as the Mt. Evans conference room, which provides an event venue overlooking the ramp at RMMA. In 2021, the airport hosted six significant public events at the airport, including the Jefferson County Airport Association Fly-In, the Commemorative Air Force Flying Legends of Victory Tour, the Collector Car Council of Colorado Car Show, the Commemorative Air Force Air Power History Tour, the Special Olympics Colorado Plane-Pull Fundraiser, and the National Lao-Hmong Memorial Foundation Kick-Off. Several movies have been filmed in part at the airport, including scenes from “Stand Up and Be Counted” in 1971 and “SwitchBack” starring Dennis Quaid and Danny Glover in 1997, according to historical airport documents. Records also indicate that former President Gerald Ford visited the airport while on the campaign trail, and former Vice President Al Gore visited the airport in 1994 to memorialize firefighters who died on Storm King Mountain. While numerous high-profile individuals may use the airport, they are able to remain anonymous due to the nature of corporate air travel and the services of the airport’s fixed-base operators, said Anslow. “However, we do enjoy the arrival/departure of the occasional professional hockey team or University of Colorado Athletics charter.”

Airport Supports Neighbors Impacted by Marshall Fire Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (RMMA) played key support roles in response to the Marshall Fire that devastated parts of Superior and Louisville on December 30. The airport is located only a few miles from the burn area in Boulder County. The evening of the fire, North Metro Fire Department (NMFD) requested assistance from RMMA Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters (ARFF). Four staff members took the airport’s ARFF truck and assisted in fighting grass fires along Highway 128. “We have an incredibly close and strong relationship with the communities that surround us, including Louisville and Superior,” said RMMA Director Paul Anslow. “Many of those residents and others from surrounding areas work at the airport, take flight lessons at the airport, eat at restaurants at the airport or run businesses directly or indirectly impacted by the airport. We feel a responsibility to offer whatever assistance we can to our neighbors.” Those impacted by the fire include an airport employee whose home was destroyed. In addition, President Biden landed at RMMA when he visited the area on January 7 to survey the damage. The President arrived in Colorado at Denver International Airport via Air Force One and traveled from there to RMMA aboard Marine One, along with four V-22 Osprey aircraft from Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1).

THE MARSHALL FIRE A COMMUNITY GATHERS TO HELP So many individuals, organizations, and businesses banded together to help victims of the Marshall Fire – there were far too many single efforts to count! Each helper made us thankful to be a part of the greater Broomfield community. Here we have captured just a few of the efforts of some of our advertisers. These are the organizations that we are extra proud to call partners and friends.

Bal Swan Children’s Center mobilized quickly and organized a clothing/gift card/toy drive within three days of the fire. One of the families at the school also made sifters for families to search through ash to find any of their possessions. Additionally, Bal Swan offered emergency childcare for preschool-aged children whose families lost access to care or needed a respite. To help those devastated by the Marshall Fire, Elements Massage in Broomfield will donate $10 for every new member signing up through February, to coloradogives.org. Elements Massage is also organizing a donation drive with its CO studios to help give back to and take care of local first responders.

If you lost hearing devices, chargers, or other important ear gear as a result of the Marshall Fire, or the fires forced your hearing care provider to close, call Family Hearing today — they can help replace equipment and provide support! www.familyhearingco.com. Linda DeLano of Country Financial and friends worked with 5280 Burger Bar to help prepare and deliver more than 100 turkey and ham dinners to local first responders at six Westminster Firehouses that responded to the Marshall fires, as well as 40 meals to Denver Health paramedics who worked tirelessly through the pandemic.

Live Love Dance held a spirit week in the week following the fires. Their dancers dressed up to fit the theme and donated money when they came for class. All donations went to Boulder Bodywear to buy new dancewear and shoes for dancers who lost theirs in the fire. Live Love Dance also accepted donations to take to A Precious Child. RE/MAX Momentum partnered with nonprofit Flutterby to raise more than $4,000 and give gift cards directly to affected families. They also delivered 75 cases of water to the YMCA in Lafayette upon the news of the fire, and held a drive to collect toiletries, clothes, etc. which were donated to A Precious Child.

Sill-TerHar Motors asked for people to bring lightly used or new items to help those that fell victim to the fire. Within two days both sides of the showroom were full. Various wonderful volunteers from Broomfield helped sort items, and helped dozens and dozens of families in those first days. The family and friends of Sill-TerHar later came together to help move the donations to the Marshall Fire Donations and Resource Center at the Flatirons Mall. The company stated, “When the time came, the community didn’t hesitate to help. Whether you donated your time, money or items, we are proud to have been able to give back to the community that has supported us for over 60 years.” Wag N’ Wash Broomfield partnered with Sloppy Kisses Animal Rescue and Mile High Meowies & Mutts for a pet microchipping and registration event. The event was free for pets displaced during the Marshall Fire and $25 for other pets looking to get microchipped with all proceeds going to the Colorado Pet Pantry. They also donated a percentage of sales in those first days to evacuation centers who were helping manage pets. WeatherTech accepted donations of non-perishable food items, water, clothing, and more for the impacted community at its new local showroom and was overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.

Tragedy Highlights the Need to Re-Assess

HOMEOWNERS POLICY By Tina Eichner

The loss of a home is unfathomable on its own. Imagine finding out in the days after a catastrophic loss that your homeowners insurance was not adequate for replacement. Adding insult to injury, this is the difficult news that some Marshall fire victims have received from their insurance company. As many of us contemplate the tragedy of a home lost to fire and review safety checklists as a result, a homeowner’s insurance review should definitely be part of the assessment. We talked with Linda DeLano of Country Financial who had some suggestions. “An insurance review should happen at least once a year. Consider it a check-up just like a dentist or doctor appointment,” she said. Linda explained that insurance is one of those things that we buy once and then may not think about again, but conditions change and updates may be necessary. “People always want to know how to reduce their premium, but when a tragedy happens, a low premium is not the top priority. People want to know that they are covered,” Linda said. Standard homeowner’s insurance required by mortgage companies covers the repair and replacement of homes lost or damaged but that doesn’t mean the entire cost is covered. Different policies will have different levels of payout. When reviewing your homeowner’s insurance, there are several things that are important to understand. First of all, since Covid, the cost of building materials has increased dramatically, and how people are using their homes has also changed. This has affected values and replacement costs. As you assess your policy, there are some important elements to ask about. Linda said to first consider dwelling coverage. Is the coverage enough to rebuild? This is different from the market value of the home. Homeowner’s insurance valuation system formulas

26

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

calculate the cost to rebuild the dwelling. Ask if you have unlimited replacement coverage or coverage for an additional percentage over the dwelling coverage? The second part of the policy is personal property which accounts for the contents of the home. This will be a standard amount, such as 75% of the value of the dwelling coverage. This is where documentation such as receipts, photos, or videos are critical, to show what you owned. Third, consider the part of the policy for additional living expenses. This covers things like hotel bills or restaurant meals during the time period when you are displaced from your home. Also rental costs while your home is repaired. While insurance may not be something we like to think about, we all want to know it is there and right for our situation when we need it. Linda said it is critical to have a local insurance representative who knows you and your needs and can ensure that you are properly covered.

Lights CAMERA ACTION!

Broomfield Community Players Proudly Present … FUN! By Bette Erickson

If you are like me, and believe there’s seriously nothing more entertaining than local playhouse theater, then read on … I assure you, no organization does it better than Broomfield’s own Community Players. Late last year, I was fortunate to enjoy an intimate lunch followed by a fun-filled production of “A Gift to Remember” performed by the talented troupe at the Broomfield Auditorium. It’s a popular holiday tale based on the book by Debbie Macomber about travelers stranded on a wintery night at a train depot on the eve of Christmas.

28

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

The stage performance was wellreceived by the audience the afternoon I attended. The Broomfield Community Players (BCP) was formed in the spring of 2016 as an all-volunteer group to provide opportunities for adults in our community to explore or reignite their interest in the dramatic arts. “The timing was perfect,” explained Keri Dillingham, executive director of the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH). “The group approached BCAH with the goal of creating a new community theater program,” added Dillingham. Broomfield Community Players, administered by the BCAH, is a group of volunteers who produce theatrical shows in our community. The bonus is that it’s free for members to participate and explore

their talents whether just starting out in the performance arts or even if you have several productions to your name. “There’s nothing better than local talent,” said Joyce Smith, a longtime Broomfield resident, explaining that while she would love to, she’s not yet auditioned to perform in any of the productions with the Broomfield Community Players. “I live vicariously through their performances,” she said with all modesty.

Someday, she said, she plans on mustering the courage to audition for a show. Dillingham agreed. When asked why she doesn’t perform with BCP she paused and said, “I’ve never ever auditioned. I don’t think I could act at the BCP level - they are an amazingly talented group of actors.” BCP aims to improve quality of life in our community and neighboring municipalities by producing high quality theatre experiences for audiences, and showcase live theatre as a viable and important art form, as explained in its promotional material. To be sure, accessible performance art is vitally important to a community’s cultural identity. The BCP organization has created a robust theatre company that includes Broomfield residents and members of neighboring communities and generously collaborates with area community theatre organizations. “Their programs are fantastic,” said Dillingham. “BCP is made up of a talented group of volunteers with actors of all ages and levels.” For more information and to follow event updates, visit: www.facebook.com/broomfieldcommunityplayers/. EATING FOR

Health & Longevity CONSIDERING A VEGAN DIET By Lisa Payne

About five years ago my husband got reactive arthritis. It’s very rare and his case was caused by food poisoning. Three months after his diagnosis, his pain was so bad that he was forced to use crutches to get around. I remember his skin looking gray from the pain, and it took him ten minutes to get from our bed to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It was really scary. We had no idea if this was our new normal. Through all of this, the thing that stands out the most to me is that he never complained. He tried to live life as normal, help out when he could, and he was always kind. If I was in that much pain for that long, I think I would have been crabby every day. I had so much respect and admiration for his strength and humility. He wasn’t going to let the pain define his life. And it took about a year to fully recover. Reactive arthritis can come back in a small percentage of people. And unfortunately, it did for Doug about a year or so later. It wasn’t as debilitating and he recovered more quickly. After that he started watching documentaries about food to see if there was anything he could do to reduce the inflammation in his body which may fight off another flare-up. He didn’t want a third or fourth or ANY future episodes. He quickly learned that eating vegan was something that may help. Heart disease also runs in his family, and having young kids, he wants to live a long life for them. He has been mostly vegan now for almost two years and he has never felt better. His inflammation is pretty much gone, he could drop his cholesterol meds and he unintentionally lost weight. His mind is also clearer. I could go on and on with this topic, but you get the gist. To show you that eating vegan can be easy and delicious, here is one of our favorite recipes that our whole family loves.

30

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2022

VEGAN

Green Chili Skillet Tots Ingredients: • • • • • •

2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 1 pound ground impossible beef 1 small onion, diced 1 cup shredded non-dairy cheddar cheese, divided 2 cups frozen tater tots or veggie tots 3 cups vegan green chili (can find in grocery store Mexican foods aisle), warmed Cooking spray

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees 2. Heat oil in large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add impossible beef and onion. Break it up to resemble ground beef. Cook about 5-8 minutes until fully cooked. Remove from heat. 3. Spread mixture into skillet along with one cup of the green chili. Sprinkle with ½ cup cheese and arrange tots evenly over the cheese. Coat tots with cooking spray. Transfer to the oven. 4. Bake 15-20 minutes. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake again until cheese is melted and tots are golden brown, about 5 minutes more. 5. Serve in a bowl with warm green chili poured over the top. Top with diced tomatoes and vegan sour cream if desired. TRIVIA CHALLENGE: A FUN WAY TO SPEND AN EVENING AND BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY By Kristen Beckman

DO YOU KNOW WHAT A GROUP OF GIRAFFES IS CALLED? If you know the answer is ‘a tower,’ or even if you don’t but you are a fan of trivia, you won’t want to miss the 5th Annual Broomfield Brain Trust 2022 Trivia Challenge, which will put Broomfield trivia fans to the test on their knowledge of a wide variety of topics. After taking 2021 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returns this month to test players on their knowledge of topics such as animal groupings, human anatomy, world capitals, sports scandals, and TV families. The challenge is scheduled to take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, at The Chateaux at Fox Meadows, 13600 Xavier Lane. Pizza, salad, drinks, and dessert are provided for participants and are included in each team’s entry fee. Trivia begins at 7:00 p.m. and includes eight categories consisting of 10 questions each. Questions are projected onto a screen, and participants fill out a form with their answers, which are tallied by monitors after each round. Broomfield’s own Bruce Erley is scheduled to serve as master of ceremonies for the event. The event is hosted and staffed by the Rotary Club of Broomfield Crossing, which brings in about 25 members and about 10-15 local high schoolers to help run the event. Proceeds from team entry donations are added to the Broomfield Crossing Rotary Foundation Fund, which supports several charities throughout the year including End Polio Now, Broomfield FISH, Emerald School, the Broomfield Veterans Museum, A Precious Child, and the Broomfield Community Foundation. Questions are developed by the club’s Quiz Mistress and a few helpers from the club. “It’s all very top secret,” said Broomfield Brain Trust Boss Jeff Taylor. “None of the questions leak out ahead of time.”

During the most recent challenge in 2020, 28 teams competed for the title “Smartest Brains in Broomfield.” The winning team – The Emily’s Stars team sponsored by Emily Joo – answered 58 of 80 questions correctly to take home the coveted electronic Broomfield Brain Trust trophy. The competition was so close that the top three teams finished only four points apart. Space is limited to 30 teams this year. Taylor said individual participants and smaller groups can be paired together to form a complete team of six. Participants are asked to either be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a recent negative test to provide as safe a gathering as possible. Taylor said nonparticipants may attend to watch the event for $25, which includes food. Since the event was launched six years ago, participation has grown each year, starting with 15 teams during its first year and nearly doubling that as of 2020. Taylor said many teams return to participate year after year. Proceeds raised total between $3,000 and $5,000, said Taylor. “It’s a very fun way to spend an evening and benefit the Broomfield community,” said Taylor. “That’s the reason people come and I have to say we don’t disappoint.”

To sign up to participate, contact Taylor at taylorx3@comcast.net. 32
