FROM THE
EDITOR Making Local Business Connections Last year when I first started talking with a few close friends and advisors about starting this magazine, one person who I respect very much asked me why? Why did I want to start this magazine?
The reasons were many. I am a lifelong journalist who loves writing and telling stories. I am a daughter of Broomfield who cares deeply for this community and especially for its organizations. I liked the idea of starting a business that might provide opportunities for my family and become something that I could pass on. I liked the idea of contributing. But for anyone who starts a small business, it is not an endeavor that you enter into lightly. Your reasons must go beyond money (exactly my friend’s point) and actually be rooted somewhere in your soul. If you are a small business person, you know what I am talking about. I am like you. And I am also doing this for you. We aim to provide a high impact yet affordable way for local businesses to connect with customers. It is part of my why. We run this publication out of a small home office that used to be the living room. It has become the epicenter of a dream becoming reality. Through the summer months, as COVID raged, I sat with team members and family members in the evening, some of us on the floor of the small room, strategizing and planning. And later I would try to go to sleep. And I would worry. Because when you are in business for yourself you are always a little worried. When it started snowing one morning just before Thanksgiving I sent my business partner, chief photographer, husband, out into the snow to capture the January cover. What if that was the only storm for a while? When you are part of a small business, you are thinking on your feet and improvising every day. I carry cards and magazines everywhere I go. I’ll tell anyone who will listen about Our Broomfield™. And I am not a salesperson. But when you are a small businessperson you are a salesperson and a delivery driver and a bookkeeper and photographer and whatever you need to be at the moment that it is needed. This is the first Our Broomfield™ Our Favorites edition. We asked readers to vote for their favorite Broomfield businesses through the fall and in this issue we highlight the winners. Many of these organizations, especially the restaurants, are fighters. These small businesses have worked and toiled to keep going through the pandemic, for some of the reasons I stated above and for dozens of others unknown to us. Regardless of why, they all deserve a tip of the hat. They also deserve our support. The days are looking better. Our environment is improving. As you continue to get “back to normal” in all areas of your life, don’t forget our small businesses. Spend your dollars with our local entrepreneurs -- it will come back to you through the health of our community! And you might just help a friend or neighbor sleep a little better too. Thanks for reading,
Tina Eichner

INSPIRATION FOR
BUSY FAMILIES Have a Romantic Night at Home on Valentine’s Day By Lisa Payne
I don’t enjoy going out on Valentine’s Day. I never have. The menu is always limited and expensive and I end up feeling like the whole event is full of pressure. But I do love the concept of the day; to shower your person with love and positivity all day long. There are so many ways we can express our love to our significant other without the pressure of going out to an expensive dinner and giving extravagant gifts. I’m all about having an experience as a gift. Here are a few ideas that might get your creativity flowing. If you have young kids that you need to distract to get alone time, you can start the night with heart shaped pizzas from Papa Murphy’s and then settle them in with a movie. My kids LOVE the heart pizzas. You can even make them together with premade dough that you shape yourself. Time their dinner with food delivery for yourselves or something that was made ahead and baking in the oven like stuffed manicotti or a big pot of soup and crusty bread. Then run off to your bedroom for your hour or two alone! Have the ambiance ready to go with a picnic blanket on the floor to eat your dinner in the dark with an irresponsible amount of candles burning and see where the evening takes you. After you eat dinner, why not give each other massages? Massages don’t just feel great, they provide proven mental and physical health benefits. According to Root Energy Advisors, they help reduce stress, improve sleep, relieve pain, release toxins in the muscles and strengthen your immune system by increasing circulation in your body which increases your white blood cells that are used to fight off viruses and infection. Sounds like something we should be doing for each other weekly! This idea is my favorite. Talk to your spouse ahead of time and agree to write each other a love letter that you read on Valentine’s Day. I am a huge fan of keeping the love alive. Sometimes people get stuck in the cycle of pointing out what we don’t like about each other. You snore, you don’t take out the trash, you never listen, you are always on your phone. The list can go on and on. When we always hear the negative, it can hurt the relationship. If we take the time to thoughtfully list all of the things we love about our spouse and read that to them … wow. Talk about connection and positive reinforcement. You can pop it in a frame and keep
12
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
it where you can see it every single day. And when the going gets rough and you happen to upset your spouse, pull it out and remind them of all the things they love about you - haha! I think I may try to incorporate everything on this list this year. Why not? Wrap yourself up in this day of love and have some fun. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Mental Health Partners: Building a Healthier Broomfield Through Whole-Person Care Mental health has been a community concern for years - a concern that has increased exponentially during the past 12 months as COVID-19 has exacerbated anxiety, fear, and grief. With private mental health services stretched thin even before the pandemic, communitybased services like Mental Health Partners (MHP) are filling a critical need.
16
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
By Kristen Beckman
Mental Health Partners is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community mental health center with seven locations in Broomfield, Boulder, Lafayette, and Longmont. The organization provides whole-person care focused on outpatient therapy and addiction recovery services along with other services that address factors that impact mental health. “We have found that mental health issues often have a co-relationship with something else going on in people’s lives,” said Kristina Shaw, public information officer at MHP. “Perhaps a person is homeless, or they can’t find a job, and now they are having depression because of that. We try to address what is going on in somebody’s entire life through supportive services, as well as mental health care.” Those services, coordinated through MHP’s CARE team, include medication management, housing support, life skills training, peer support, and wellness coaching. Shaw said MHP is a safety net for the community, keeping people experiencing a mental health crisis out of emergency rooms, providing appropriate care and resources for those who need care, and helping build a healthier community for everyone. Localized care is a cornerstone of MHP’s approach because it allows care providers to direct clients to the most appropriate nearby resources that can help them address their individual challenges. In addition, local care helps remove barriers to accessing clinical care, including transportation and childcare issues.
When the pandemic hit last spring, MHP quickly shifted to a telehealth model, conducting most therapy appointments via video or telephone. Thanks to infrastructure upgrades it started even before the pandemic, the organization was able to begin remote appointments with minimal interruption at a time when more and more people were experiencing anxiety and stress due to COVID-19. Shaw said the telehealth model has been well received, although it encountered an unexpected challenge early on - some clients did not have a phone, computer or Internet access. MHP’s philanthropy department created a COVID-19 relief fund through which it collected donations to help 250 clients in various ways, including providing wireless phones to some clients so they could continue receiving therapy and services remotely. With its focus on serving the community, MHP also has an outreach department that goes into the community to provide support and resources. The Community Health Worker team, which was in place prior to the pandemic, works alongside partner agencies or attends community events to talk to people about mental health care and provide resources. A second outreach group, the Crisis Counseling Program Team, was formed by the state’s CO Spirit grant and focuses

on communities and individuals impacted by the pandemic. This team provides mental health support and resources to communities where there is significant need, such as food banks and COVID-19 testing sites. “We have found it’s really helpful because some people don’t realize they need extra help until we have a conversation with them – often we’re in the right place at the right time for people,” said Shaw. During the pandemic, clinicians and MHP’s outreach teams have also been reaching out to the community, providing free webinars with coping skills, self-care ideas, parenting strategies, and other topics that provide clinical and non-clinical information. MHP is scheduled to open a new office in Broomfield in January located at 897 Highway 287. The new site is specially designed to support outpatient mental health care for children, teens, and families, featuring play therapy rooms, a family therapy space, and an art therapy office. Additionally, MHP has partnered with Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities to display art throughout the space, with artwork available for sale and 10 percent of the purchase price donated back to MHP. Prepare Now for Smooth Sailing Through Tax Season By Megan Mayes
It is time to start organizing and planning to pay your taxes, and early preparation is the key to success according to Brenda French, CPA. She suggested that you reach out to your tax professional soon to make sure you get an appointment, as the season is busy and schedules fill up quickly! Brenda said, “Most tax professionals provide many ways that a client can reach out, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, with phone and email being the best.”
18
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
D
uring the winter months, it is important to pay close attention to your mail and year-end statements, which may be mixed with all of the holiday cards and shopping advertisements. If you have a good idea of what you will receive from your employer (such as 1099s and W-2s) then you can keep track of what other things you might still need in order to meet with your tax advisor. You can even schedule your appointment before you receive all of your necessary documents, and Brenda recommends it! Her checklists and organizers make it easy to keep track of what you still need to gather, and the client portals allow you to safely and securely upload documents as you receive them. This helps her clients guarantee they have everything in order to prepare for their meetings, then Brenda is able to maximize time and productivity. Many people wait to organize and file their taxes, but there are many aspects that can be handled early and easily with the help of a tax professional. If you already know that you need to file an extension, Brenda affirms the importance of letting your tax preparer know as soon as possible. The most common reasons you might need an extension are because of outstanding documents or unorganized information. Even if you have all of your information, you might need to file an extension if your information is given to a tax preparer too late. However, Brenda reminds us that “The only benefit of an extension is time. The tax is still due and payable in April.”
Register for spring classes now! Brenda’s expertise and experience mean she sees the most common mistakes and overlooked parts of people’s taxes. She recommends paying close attention to “educator expenses, retirement savings credits, education credits, property taxes on a timeshare, prior year State tax, and charitable miles.” Even after the end of the year, you can still reduce your taxes, so take full advantage of the benefits of funding your IRA or SEP. This is the primary way to reduce your taxes at the last minute, and you have until April 14 to fund your traditional IRA, and through the extension deadline of September 15th to fund an SEP. It is also important to consider the unique impacts of 2020 on incomes and taxes. Unemployment is taxable under federal and state, so if withholding was not applied when the benefits began, don’t let an unexpected tax bill catch you off guard. Business owners could also greatly benefit from a consultation with a tax preparer.

Bird Club
Brings Birders Together for Education, Interaction, and Advocacy By Kristen Beckman
Photos courtesy of Walter Szymanski
Backyard birdwatching has become a popular hobby during pandemic-related shutdowns this year, as many people stuck at home have found entertainment just outside their windows. For those who want to take their newfound hobby to the next level, the Broomfield Bird Club offers opportunities to learn more about birds, socialize with other bird enthusiasts, and advocate for the birds of Broomfield.
The Broomfield Bird Club, which is a 504(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established in 2016 thanks to the vision of open space advocate Ellie McKinley. Several interested citizens along with McKinley convened a board to work out the nuts and bolts of the club that year. The club’s mission has been and continues to be bringing birders together, fostering a love of birds and birding, educating

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
people about birds, and providing ways for people to help birds. Despite COVID-19 challenges this year, the club has been able to continue to offer its regular line-up of events and programs, although with a few tweaks. The club has pivoted to monthly virtual presentations on topics including specific birds such as hummingbirds and owls, backyard habitats, bird rehabilitation, Broomfield’s nesting bald eagles, and identifying birds by their sounds. Jan Kardatzke, the club’s field trip coordinator, said the virtual option has been well received, with up to 80 people attending some meetings. The club also hosts frequent bird walks during which birdwatchers meet shortly after sunrise and spend two to three hours walking a trail and observing and photographing various birds. Sometimes a master
birder will lead the walks, but members also are adept at sharing their knowledge with other participants as well. The birds spotted during the bird walk are added to a list posted on an application called eBird as well as on social media and the club’s website. The club donates some of the membership dues it collects to organizations like the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and Nature’s Educators, and also encourages members to participate in letter-writing campaigns aimed at issues that impact local birds. For instance, the group has been active with advocating for trail closures around Broomfield’s nesting bald eagle pairs, as eagles are sensitive to disturbances around their nests. Broomfield is a great place to observe birds as it has several different habitats in and around the city. They include Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm, which is home to nesting eagles; Plaster Reservoir, which attracts ducks; Metzger Farms, which is home to ducks, hawks, songbirds, and Orioles; Brunner Reservoir, which always has plenty of ducks and geese; and Lac Amora Open Space, which has raptors, songbirds, and thrashers, said Kardatzke. Residents are also likely to find a wide variety of birds in their own backyards, including house finches, goldfinches, robins, blue jays, chickadees, bushtits, downy woodpeckers, red-winged blackbirds, collared doves, and Cooper’s hawks. Kardatzke said 272 different bird species have been identified in Broomfield.
Homeowners can make their yards bird friendly by adding a water source such as a bird bath, planting a variety of native plants, providing both deciduous and evergreen trees, and arranging feeding stations so that birds feel safe and can quickly escape to a protective tree or bush in case a predator is near. Kardatzke said birdwatching is a great hobby because it is suitable both for newcomers and experts, and most birders are friendly and willing to share stories and talk about birds. “I think that’s maybe the thing that the Bird Club has done best is bring birders together and give them a group,” she said.

Broomfield Community Resource Guide Designed to Connect Residents with Valued Local Services By Allison Eichner
The past year has presented a multitude of struggles and areas of need for people in the Broomfield community. In response, the Broomfield Community Foundation in partnership with Broomfield Health and Human Services, Broomfield Senior Services, Broomfield Recreation, A Precious Child, and Broomfield Early Childhood Council have created the new Broomfield Community Resource Guide. The Guide is a list of available services from non-profits, local businesses, and the City and County.
28
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
Designed to be a starting point when looking for support, the Resource Guide includes a diverse array of categories to fit the needs of any Broomfield resident. The easy-to-use website allows users to filter the 215 service providers by age group, type of service, and location. Each directory item includes the service provider’s address, phone number, and website. Jessica Jones, director of the Early Childhood Council, was a major contributor to the Resource Guide and helped dream up the idea. Within the community, she noticed a need among both Broomfield residents and local service providers. “This guide is a collaborative effort to help gather information on essential needs and services that are directly available, accessible, and serve Broomfield residents,” she explained. “This also helps the services in the area to help refer their clients, give outreach to develop partnerships, and create a stronger overall collaborative system of care for those needing essential services.” Additionally, Jones noted that by compiling all the resources related to senior services, child services, emergency services, healthcare, and transportation, they were able to identify gaps in available resources. She said the Resource Guide can then serve to “help our existing service providers, and potential incoming service providers, see any gaps in services that they could fill by making their home in Broomfield (for example, early childhood mental health specialists).” Jones anticipates the Guide will help both Broomfield service providers and Broomfield residents. “We hope the Resource Guide impacts the community by allowing our residents to see the rich resources we have available to us. Some people go to Adams County or Boulder County because they know of a service,

but with this, we want people to know that the resources are in our own backyard!” she explained. Businesses and nonprofits that would like to be added to the Resource Guide can complete a request form posted at the bottom of the Broomfield Community Resource Guide page. The applications are checked monthly and reviewed by members of Broomfield Health and Human Services, Broomfield Senior Services, Broomfield Recreation, A Precious Child, the Broomfield Community Foundation, and the Broomfield Early Childhood Council to assess if the service meets the criteria for the Resource Guide.

Meals on Wheels
Provides Nutrition and Engagement to Citizens in Need By Kristen Beckman
Like many community programs, Broomfield’s Meals on Wheels had to rethink its processes when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold last year, while also facing increasing need. Lisa Markus, Food Services program supervisor for Broomfield’s Senior Services department, said Meals on Wheels set a new record for meals delivered in one year in 2020 due to the pandemic. The program delivered 32,000 meals last year, an increase of 5,000 from 2019, which itself was a record-breaking year. “The Broomfield Nutrition staff has been relentless in its determination to keep the service going,” Markus said. “Their commitment and passion to serve this community is unwavering, even during a worldwide pandemic.” The program serves between 140 and 170 hot meals Monday through Friday each week, and between 50 and 70 frozen meals that clients can have for the weekends. Meals are available to Broomfield residents aged 60 and up and for residents under age 60 who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, with a doctor’s note. To make it happen, Meals on Wheels typically engages 50-60 volunteer drivers and 10 kitchen prep volunteers each week, working together with five employees. Meals are made from scratch each morning in a kitchen at the Broomfield Community Center. Staff begin cooking at 7:00 a.m. and hot, fresh meals are packaged around 10:00 a.m. Morning prep volunteers package side salads and desserts for the day’s deliveries and help prepare entrees, salads, and desserts for the next day, while afternoon volunteers help with paperwork. Normally, volunteer drivers deliver meals on four routes while Easy Ride drivers, who are part of Broomfield’s Senior Services department, deliver meals on the remaining five routes. Drivers arrive at the Community Center at 10:30 a.m. to pick up meals and spend up to two hours delivering meals on their route, said Markus. However, when the pandemic hit, stay-at-home orders meant Meals on Wheels had to reduce its volunteer crew to 20 volunteer drivers and zero kitchen volunteers. Kitchen staff divided up prep and packaging work typically performed by volunteers, and Easy Ride drivers began delivering to most routes beginning in March. Within the last few months, some volunteer drivers have been able to resume their duties. Kitchen staff now wear face masks and adhere to strict social distance guidelines while continuing strict sanitization and

cleanliness protocols, said Markus. In addition, during the pandemic Meals on Wheels implemented a no-contact delivery process whereby volunteers leave meals in a cooler rather than handing the meal to the client. Markus said continuing service during the pandemic goes beyond nutrition to providing important social engagement for clients as well. “Not only do the clients need the freshly prepared meals, but having the service continue hopefully gives them a sense of normalcy and stability when everything else may seem upside down,” said Markus. “While the clients cannot interact with the volunteer drivers in the same up-close way as they did before the pandemic, many can still see and communicate with the daily driver through the window or door.” In addition, the nutrition staff does reassurance calls every week to clients who wish to receive one. During these calls, staff check in with clients to see how they are doing and make sure they have all the resources they need. “We try our best to let clients know that we still care greatly, and we are here just for them,” said Markus. “Our number one goal was, and still is, to keep this vital program going – no matter what challenges arise.” Broomfield residents can help Meals on Wheels by becoming a volunteer driver or kitchen staff volunteer when the pandemic is over. It also accepts donations on its website.

Detox Holiday Indulgences
Smoothies with
By Lisa Payne
I don’t know about you, but even without any social plans on my calendar in December, I sure was able to indulge in all the usual holiday treats and beverages. Maybe even more so because there weren’t the usual people around to share the cookies and sweets with. And I’ve never been known to let things go to waste. Except to my own waist. I know, we can all get sick of smoothies. Or maybe you love them and never get sick of them! Either way, it’s a great time to kick off the New Year with some whole food goodness. Added bonus: it’s the perfect way to sneak fruits and vegetables into your kids growing bodies. The green smoothie is a favorite in our house. We first had it at Costco years ago when sampling a smoothie made with the VitaMix. I was shocked when my pickiest child loved it and went back for at least fifths. The second smoothie makes me feel like I’m having pie, so this one is never hard to get down. And the third is pure love and happiness in a glass. Do you remember Orange Julius? It tastes like that to me. I hope you enjoy these as much as we do! All of these smoothies serve 2-3 people, and work best in a high speed blender such as the VitaMix. I also add the ingredients to the blender in the order listed in the recipe.

A Conversation with
Keri Dillingham, Executive Director of BCAH By Bette Erickson
Much goodness came out of 2020, along with a number of nearly insurmountable challenges. On a pleasant afternoon just before Christmas, I had the opportunity to talk with Executive Director of the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH), Keri Dillingham. I wanted to find out how her organization fared through the pandemic of the past year and where it’s headed.
“

his year has shown us more than ever that the arts are a great connector,” explained Dillingham. She’s been with BCAH for seven years. “We need the arts to awaken our smiles. BCAH works to make that happen. Having arts raises and awakens hope, not only now but for years to come.” Before becoming executive director, she used her business background, marketing, and writing skills in other meaningful capacities. Dillingham has a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology from CU Boulder. She has lived in Broomfield for 20 years. BCAH lost its president and treasurer this past fall. Sherill Bunetta was with BCAH for 25 years and her absence is palpable. She and Dillingham had a strong, mutually respectful working relationship and friendship. Mrs. Bunetta died Oct. 24, leaving behind her husband, Ed, of 54 years. The couple lived in Broomfield since 1967 and Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2021
raised their three kids here. Those who knew her valued her kind spirit. “Losing Sherill thrust me into recognizing all that she’d done,” Dillingham shared. “Arts, culture, and science are essential to the community. With Sherill being gone, it’s proven to me that we need more volunteers.” Since Sherill’s death Dillingham has picked up the role of doing financial reports. “We’re currently looking for a treasurer and bookkeeper,” Dillingham said. “Volunteers who are willing to contribute their accounting skills.” Dillingham said one of her many goals for the organization is to remain sustainable first and to grow in getting a variety of diverse, creative programs. “One of BCAH’s goals is to offer a creative community,” she explains. “A place for creative people and artists. One of our main focuses is to have a place for creatives (artists, performers, and inventors) to express themselves, and giving residents diverse experiences right here in their community.” The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has really cut into the charitable monetary donations that BCAH typically receives.
“Arts, culture, and science are essential to the community. With Sherill being gone, it’s proven to me that we need more volunteers.”
“I think that the sub-sector of the arts has seen a decrease in donations. We’ve worked really hard to increase our visibility in the community,” said Dillingham. To adapt, BCAH has provided numerous socially-distanced art events in the park, through virtual art shows, and including popular drive-thru events in 2020. “It’s important for the community to know that we’re still here and still offering cultural events. We’ve done the best that we can to keep our cultural landscape alive in Broomfield.” The Arts Council was founded in 1973 and was originally a city-funded organization. As Broomfield grew, BCAH became an independent non-profit. However, it is still a strong partner with the city, including supporting Broomfield Sister Cities and the annual Student Art Show organized with the recreation services department, among other programs. BCAH serves as an umbrella organization for program management and delivery. Programs such as the Broomfield Days poster contest, Summer Sundays, Astor Women’s Choir, Broomfield Community Players, the Broomfield Film project, and by promoting various arts events in the city via its newsletter. Now more than ever BCAH needs donor support. Because of the pandemic, dozens of 2020 events have been cancelled. The organization has successfully invested quite a bit of time engaging with people where the audience is – and sometimes that means at home via virtual events. Donations support program administration costs, outreach events, newsletters, marketing, and grant writing. As we wrapped up our conversation, Keri Dillingham and I promised to touch base in the near future and meet for a socially-distanced walk. Because that’s what she does: She’s a kind and friendly connector, both personally and professionally.
