One classic story that always comes to my mind around the holidays is Lousia May Alcott’s Little Women. The book begins with an excerpt from John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, a novel about leading a Christian life. Alcott’s story begins with the four March girls—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—sitting in their living room, first lamenting their poverty but then quickly turning to bearing their burdens more cheerfully. On Christmas morning, the girls wake up to find copies of The Pilgrim’s Progress under their pillows, and then are encouraged by their mother to give away their breakfast to a poor family, the Hummels. An elderly and wealthy neighbor, Mr. Laurence, observes this and rewards their generosity by sending over a feast! The scene is touching and beautiful and while clearly the girls did not expect to be reciprocated for their neighborly kindness, they were rewarded in a compounded way. They first received the satisfaction of sharing with someone who had less, and then the spoils of appreciation by another. The result was a three-pronged change. Broomfield is a giving community. This is something I have regularly observed in my decades of life here. I am not saying that our giving and sharing in Broomfield is unique and different from any other place, but this is the only place that I have ever lived and I would definitely call it a profound characteristic of our community. Broomfield’s people give and share. As we always do in this magazine, we attempt this holiday season to bring visibility to numerous groups and causes through our pages, informing readers about ways to give and care and share. I will let you learn about some of these causes as you continue reading the following pages. But this month, and this year, I also wanted to highlight the opportunity to care for our neighbors. As the COVID pandemic approaches the end of its second year, I feel greater and greater awareness of a secondary pandemic; one of loneliness, sadness, and depression. No age or demographic group is immune. I feel so many around me hurting and struggling. And just like COVID, the way out seems very difficult to navigate. I am not saying that any one person or any one act can solve the problem, but every little act by every single person will bring a little happiness that will eventually lead to healing and change for the whole community. Who needs your kindness this holiday? Your spouse, your child, a friend, a colleague at work, the overworked clerk at the store, a tired nurse you know, an elderly neighbor? Keep your eyes and ears and heart open, and care and share to the needs you see. Who needs your caring right now? Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas,

Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

INSPIRATIO N FO R

BUSY FAMILIES By Lisa Payne

PAY IT FORWARD for the Holidays and Every Day!

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Have you ever been in line at Starbucks and the person in front of you pays for your drinks? That happened to me in

Minnesota this past summer. The drive thru line was long and I had terrible allergies that day and was sniffling and wiping my eyes the whole wait. When it was my turn to pay, the barista said the person in front of me had paid for my drinks. I was so caught off guard that it choked me up. And then I realized they probably thought I had been crying the whole time watching me wipe my eyes and nose so much! No matter the reason, I will never forget the feeling of being taken care of so unexpectedly by a complete stranger. I vowed to return that favor as often as I could because everyone should be caught off-guard with acts of love. December is a wonderful time to show your love! There are countless ways to serve others that don’t cost much, if anything at all. Brainstorm with your family and come up with your own list, or use some of the ideas listed here. Get ready to feel elated all month long!

• • • • • • • • • • •

Ring and dash some baked treats on a friend’s porch (ring their doorbell and run before they answer, leaving them to guess who did it) Have pizza delivered to your local fire house Send a nice note to someone in an underappreciated profession (insurance adjuster, electrician etc…) Leave a thank you note and a treat for the person who cleans your office at work Leave baked goods for the trash collector Offer to walk a neighbor’s dog (or even scoop their dog poop!) Draw a happy message in chalk on a neighbor’s driveway Send a note to a family member or friend, telling them what you love about them the most Stick affirmations in your kid’s lunch box Put chocolates on your kids pillows one night, like a fancy hotel Make a coupon book for your husband or kids, offering to give a back rub or take their turn emptying the trash Write a nice online review for your favorite restaurant or a book you loved Send a text to your partner telling them they looked so nice today Serve a meal to homeless people through the Denver Rescue Mission (sign up on their website) Pick up pieces of litter you see on the street or walking trail Hold the door open for someone Smile at everyone you see in one day Compliment a stranger in some way (nice shirt, love those shoes, great bike) Babysit for a friend free of charge Leave an uplifting comment on a friend’s social media page Invite an old friend over for hot tea or coffee Donate blood Compliment a parent on their child’s behavior Put money in an expired meter Let merging cars into your lane with a smile and a wave

Let’s all spend the month paying it forward! Have your kids do one act of kindness each day this month and write them all down. The benefits of being kind not only reduce feelings of anxiety and unhappiness but it helps you live longer. Let’s all live long, happy lives! Happy Holidays everyone!

Santa Cops Marks 30 Years

of Giving Gifts to Broomfield’s Kids in Need By Kristen Beckman

Santa’s elves, with the help of the Broomfield Police Department, have been busy for the past month collecting and wrapping gifts for children who might not otherwise have a gift under the Christmas tree this year. The Santa Cops program began three decades ago when Tom Deland, then the newly appointed Broomfield Police Chief in 1991, recognized that a lot of kids in Broomfield weren’t going to have any kind of Christmas because of challenges their families were facing. Broomfield was smaller then and didn’t have its own social services department to help struggling residents, he said. The police department and city employees often stepped in to fill the gaps. Deland, along with Broomfield’s former mayor Walt Spader and several private donors including the Spallone family, teamed up to launch the Christmas toy program. “That first year, we probably provided toys to about 30 or 35 kids,” said Deland. “But as the city grew over the next 30 years, the program just expanded and expanded.” Deland said about 275 gifts were distributed last year to children up to age 16, and at least as many kids are expected to be nominated this year. It’s not always toys that are gifted to recipients, said Deland. Many kids request and receive necessities like warm coats, boots, and socks. Early on, the program ran in partnership with an annual toy drive hosted by radio station KYGO, but as the needs of Broomfield grew, the police department decided to take the program entirely in-house so it could better meet the needs of Broomfield kids. About 15 years ago, the Broomfield Rotary Club got involved in the effort by providing a substantial amount of funding for gifts each year. Sgt. Rhett Newbold, who leads the program for the Broomfield Police Department, said as police officers go

about their work in the community and come in contact with families who need help, they can nominate them to receive a gift through the program. School resource officers, school officials and members of the city’s Health and Human Services Department also frequently nominate recipients. Officers purchase and wrap toys and then invite nominated families to come to the police station to pick up their gifts in time for Christmas. “It’s been a great program for 30 years,” said Deland. “It’s a real homegrown effort. The police department really embraced it from day one and I’m glad that it is still going on this long after we started.” Newbold said Santa Cops is both a great community relations effort and a morale booster for officers. “The whole main hallway inside the police department is just lined with wall-to-wall gifts,” said Newbold. “A lot of us have kids too, and we can’t imagine the thought of kids not having something for Christmas.“ Those who want to help can drop off a new, unopened toy at the police station or detention center, make a monetary donation at the police department, or mail a check to Broomfield Rotary, P.O. Box 332, Broomfield, Colorado 80038. All funds collected for Santa Cops go directly to purchasing gifts for kids in need.

By the Numbers:

Broomfield’s Winter and Holiday Services By Kristen Beckman

The City and County of Broomfield provides a variety of services to help residents celebrate and enjoy the holiday season and stay safe on the roads each winter. Following is a behind-the-scenes and by-the-numbers look at how Broomfield is working for you this winter.

Photos by Pat Eichner

14 Snow Clearing Machines This winter, you can count on Sleetwood Mac, Sled Zeppelin, and Buzz Iceclear to help keep you safe and mobile on Broomfield’s roads. Those are the names of three of Broomfield’s 14 snow plows named during a community contest earlier this year. From nearly 500 suggested names, 14 were chosen, including Catch My Drift, Edward Blizzardhands, and Han Snowlow. Though the names are lighthearted, their job is a serious one - clearing driving lanes of snow and ice during snowstorms. Statistically, Broomfield averages about 18 storms per year, said Geoff Wells, superintendent of Broomfield Street Services. The past two winters have been above average, with 23 storms during the 2019-2020 season and 21 storms during the 2020-2021 winter

20

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | December 2021

season. Broomfield’s snow plow drivers average between 35,000 and 75,000 miles of driving per season, Wells said. If you’ve ever wondered why certain streets are plowed while others aren’t, it’s because there is a priority system and certain criteria that the city uses, which you can read about on its website. For instance, snow is only cleared from residential streets if there is four inches or more of accumulation on roads. There are a few things residents can do to ensure their own safety around the plows and help snow clearing operations get done efficiently. First and foremost, said Wells, stay off roads unless it’s an emergency during snowstorms, especially severe ones, and try to avoid leaving cars parked on roadways during storms. If you must drive, give plows a wide berth and don’t assume the driver can see you, said Wells.

127,500 Festive Lights Months before Christmas, the city begins preparing for its holiday festivities, including its annual Holiday Tree Lighting, which is scheduled to take place December 3 this year. Kay Gazaway, the city’s Community Events Coordinator, said planning the event includes:

Photos by Pat Eichner

Coordinating with the North Pole to arrange Santa’s visit to Broomfield

Working with North Metro Fire Department to give Santa a fire truck ride to the event

Ordering 700 freshly baked ice box cookies from Enchanted Oven Bakery to give away

Coordinating with elementary music teachers across Broomfield for musical performances

Hiring professional carolers to lead group caroling

Partnering with the Parks Department to arrange hay wagon rides

Coordinating with City Hall, Broomfield Police, and the city’s Streets, Facilities and Parks and Recreation teams to create the event.

In addition to the tree lighting ceremony, the city also decorates the Broomfield Community Center, the library, the Bay, the Health and Human Services building, the Depot Museum, the Paul Derda Rec Center, Midway Park, Hobo Park, Community Park, Brunner House, the police department, courts and detention center buildings, and mall bridges. Lighting work begins at the end of October when crews begin checking lights and installation starts early in November. About 40 staff members spend 2,000 hours and use three aerial lifts to install and remove approximately 5,100 strands of lights - or about 127,500 bulbs, 27 free-standing decorations, and 32 wall washers that shine on the side of the HHS building.

8 Tree Recycling Drop Offs

When the holiday festivities are over and it’s time to take down decorations, the city will recycle your Christmas tree. There are eight drop-off locations for holiday trees that will be open from December 18 through January 9, said Chuck Gehringer, arborist/forester for the City of Broomfield. The drop-off locations are at Bronco Park, Broadlands Park West, Lac Amora Park, Community Park Ball Fields, Broomfield Recycling Center, Meridian Park, Anthem Community Park and the Tree Branch Recycling Facility. Crews make several sweeps among the sites, each collecting about 200 cubic yards of chip during the holiday season. The city will collect any live holiday trees for recycling and asks residents to remove stands, lights, and ornaments before dropping their tree off. Wreaths, garland, and yard waste are not accepted at the drop-off sites. The holiday recycling program is part of a year-round service the city provides to residents that allows them to bring tree branches, leaves, and other materials in for recycling. The Forestry Department performs two grinds per year, producing three types of mulch for the city and residents to use in their gardening and landscaping projects, Gehringer said. Throughout the year, the city takes in more than 22,500 cubic yards of material that it converts to usable mulch, some of which is distributed at shrub beds and around trees throughout the city. Holiday Cookie Exchange! By Lisa Payne

Who doesn’t love a good cookie exchange? Well, maybe a few people, but I sure enjoy them. I get so many ideas on cookie varieties I wasn’t aware of, as well as stories of how long a recipe has been in the family and who started it. The first time I was made aware that there were more Christmas cookies than the variety my mom made was when I was in elementary school. Right before the holidays my mom burned both of her hands when she dropped a big pot of boiling water at the school while volunteering. She was unable to make cookies that year, but a friend brought over a huge tray of many different cookies and creations. I thought we had won the lottery. I couldn’t believe so many different cookies existed. And if that one family had that many different cookies, which ones did my other friend’s parents make? The curiosity began! Today very good friends of mine do a big cookie exchange every year. They host a brunch and I am giddy looking at all of the varieties of deliciousness. My kids also wait in anticipation for when I return with the tray of treats. They never last long. (I have to eat my favorites in the car on the way home). Here are two family favorites in our house. I hope you enjoy them!

Spritz •

1 1/2 cups of butter

1 cup sugar

Cream above together, then add the following: •

1 egg well beaten

4 cups sifted flour

1 tsp. baking powder

2 tsp. vanilla

Instructions: After all of the ingredients are mixed together, put them in a spritz cookie press with whatever design you like and press onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Shop Local This Season Makin' A List ... By Tina Eichner

I love Christmas, and I love giving gifts, but the selecting of gifts comes with more than a little anxiety. Is it something the recipient wants or needs? Will it be appreciated? Do they already have one? Is it the right color or size? And who wants to drive all over Denver to find the perfect thing? Well as I sat down to make my shopping list this year, I decided to flip through an issue of Our Broomfield™ Magazine for a little inspiration. I found that there are plenty of great options right here in Broomfield offered by numerous small local businesses.

No matter your age or stage or life, who hasn’t dreamed of a shiny new bicycle under the tree? If wheels and chrome are on the list, head on down to Derby Bikes and make a Christmas wish come true. Music is another classic holiday gift so if your loved one has been dreaming of being the next guitar hero, visit Monkton Guitars and put stars in his eyes this holiday. For your teenage babysitter or dog walker, how about a gift card to Freddy’s for great burgers and shakes? And for the pet lover in your life, the possibilities are limitless: try the Dirty Dog Grooming for a gift card to get Fido cleaned up; Wag N Wash for natural pet food, treats, and supplements; Willow Run Feed and Supply is a great stop for pet care items, accessories, and toys for furry and feathered friends of all types; and Camp Bow Wow is a great resource for a gift certificate for training or boarding. The Park Wine & Spirits is a great destination for the wine or bourbon aficionado from your running club or your visiting cousin or uncle. How about a creative afternoon for your favorite mom, friend, aunt or sister? Get a gift card and treat them to a fun day at Planks and Paint. Stuff their stocking with the promise of a future lunch or dinner date and check out Buenos Tiempos, Pearl Wok, or 3 Margaritas for a holiday gift card. Or give the gift of beauty this holiday season, and let that special lady indulge in a little pampering at Appearances Salon or Elements Massage. If you have not stopped at WeatherTech on your shopping excursion yet, go! This is a great spot to find a unique and memorable gift for several people on your list. Everyone appreciates a little spruce up for their vehicle and WeatherTech has great gifts for pets too. Holiday shopping can be fun and you will get double the good feelings by shopping local and selecting a gift that your loved one will appreciate and adore.

Happy Shopping!

BROOMFIELD’S

Burgeoning Arts Scene Provides Inspiring Views for Residents By Bette Erickson

In its simplest form, an artery is a route. Whether you’re referring to the body’s circulation system or a main roadway, an artery is designed to move things along.

Photos by Pat Eichner

So, Broomfield’s new creative corridor, dubbed ARTery, is meant to immerse the community in public art along existing and future trails throughout the city. The first outdoor segment of the ARTery extends from The Field Open Space to the Broomfield County Commons. On a warm and colorful autumn afternoon last month, Halloween to be exact, I joined dozens of other residents and visitors to learn more about the inaugural ARTery route. The Halloween event offered participants the opportunity to gather and enjoy a safe and accessible way to celebrate the season. As we sauntered along with numerous, adorable costumed youngsters en route to the Brunner Farmhouse, a woman struck up a conversation with me. “Broomfield does a good job with its community engagement,” she said. I agreed and asked, “What do you think of Broomfield’s public art in and around the city?” She replied, “I’d like to see more.” I agreed with that too and told her we were in luck. The route of the phase 1 path can be found at broomfieldvoice.com/artery. The map includes locations of existing public art in Broomfield and suggested locations for future art installations as part of the ARTery’s pilot project. According to the city’s website, the art installations are titled the Little Houses Project, a concept inspired by Little Free Libraries. These little houses will provide engaging and changing content in an effort to surprise and amuse visitors. “The Public Art Committee is so excited to have been asked to manage one of the new art houses along the ARTery,” explained Mary Wilkie, Broomfield’s Public Art Committee chair. “We hope to meaningfully engage our community in creating ongoing public art by inviting members of the community to take turns as curators.” This first installation will be curated by PAC member, David Feineman, featuring photographs of some of the PAC members’ favorite pieces of public art around town, she said. Adds Wilkie, “The ARTery is a wonderful way to connect us all through shared experiences as we stop for a moment to enjoy art, each in our own unique way.” Bette Erickson writes about people, places, and events. Contact her at bette_erickson@hotmail.com.

26

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | December 2021

According to the Broomfield Voice website, the project’s multiyear purpose is to incorporate the ARTery into a complete low-stress walk and bike network, ultimately traversing throughout all five Broomfield wards, and to meet the following goals:

1. Curate public art experiences to provoke curiosity, inspire wonder and create engagement in unexpected places. 2. Enhance existing and future low-stress routes and trails throughout Broomfield. 3. Connect neighborhoods, celebrate creativity, and augment healthy activities in outdoor spaces. 4. Cultivate a sense of one Broomfield.

For more information about the ARTery and related public art events, or to offer feedback, visit the Broomfield Voice webpage, broomfieldvoice.com/artery.

The new North Metro Fire District Fire Station 61 at 1275 Midway Boulevard is slated to open during the latter part of 2022. Courtesy photo.

North Metro Fire Begins Rebuild of Broomfield’s Station 61 on Midway Blvd. By Sara Farris

Since 1956, North Metro Fire Rescue District’s Station 61 has been a mainstay along Midway Boulevard in Broomfield, proudly serving as one of the busiest fire stations in the District. However, if you’ve driven down Midway recently, you may have noticed a lot of construction activity where the old station once stood. Over the coming year, Station 61 will be rebuilt into a larger, more modern station, capable of serving Broomfield another 65 years. The new Station 61 will more than double in size compared with the previous structure, providing approximately 12,000 square feet of space for living quarters and four bays to house emergency vehicles. The additional square footage will allow North Metro Fire to add emergency response resources to Broomfield to meet the community’s needs into the future. Once completed, a battalion chief overseeing emergency operations in Broomfield will be housed at Station 61, in addition to Engine 61, Medic 61, and five firefighters. The new facility also will incorporate firefighter safety features to meet modern-day standards and measures to reduce external noise for the surrounding neighborhood. “Station 61 is at the heart of Broomfield, and we are excited to build a station that will enhance the beauty of the community it serves while providing the necessary resources to support a growing city,” said North Metro Fire Chief David Ramos. “We’ve worked closely with the city and county as well as our neighbors to design a station that will be a great resource and space for the surrounding area.”

While construction is underway, North Metro Fire has strategically relocated personnel and resources to minimize the impact on emergency response. Engine 61 and three firefighters are operating out of a temporary fire station on 1st Avenue next to North Metro Fire’s Headquarters, while Medic 61 and two firefighters are operating out of Station 65, adjoining Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. The new Station 61 was designed by Allred Architects in Broomfield and will be constructed by Golden Triangle Construction. The fire station is projected to be completed in late 2022. Residents can follow along with the construction progress through the fire district’s social media channels and on their website: nmfr.org/construction.

Assists Local Seniors with Vital Connections and Services By Megan Mayes

During childhood, we rely on our parents to feed us, care for our health and safety, and provide the love and attention we need to thrive. As these roles get passed along with age, kids often become the caretakers for their parents. But what happens in families where relationships are strained or circumstances prevent people from assisting their elderly family members? This is exactly the question that Chrysti Britt asked herself before joining Cultivate.

C

hrysti, Executive Director at Cultivate, was raised in a large family home where responsibilities passed through generations so senior family members could always count on their children for help and care. When she realized this is not the same expectation for all seniors, she felt called to do something about it. Cultivate, a volunteer organization in Boulder and Broomfield counties for the last 50 years, has made it their mission to help seniors flourish through active engagement with the community. They address the physical, mental, and social needs of our senior community members with no-cost volunteer support systems, quality social interactions, and reliable care service. Cultivate is a new name for the group, and Chrysti described the name choice as, “a long process of conversation and discovery to get to the core of what we do, because we cultivate volunteers, we cultivate community, service, and relationships. That word encompasses everything we do and who we are.” The Broomfield group was started in April of 2020 and now consists of 50 volunteers. This growth and expansion was perfectly timed for local seniors, who experienced increased isolation and difficulty meeting their basic needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cultivate’s 100 Broomfield clients are mostly living with incomes below the poverty line, more than half live alone, and a quarter are military veterans or veteran family members. Chrysti said, “Our client count quadrupled overnight because vulnerable seniors did not feel safe leaving their homes.”

32

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | December 2021

Cultivate clients in our community have access to three programs: Carry-Out Caravan, VetsGo, and Fix-It. Through the Carryout Caravan, volunteers meet at King Soopers for weekly grocery shopping. Clients can request a short list of items or a full shopping trip to stock a pantry. While many similar in-store options exist, this program is well-loved by Cultivate clients who appreciate the relationships that are formed during hand deliveries to their door or kitchen. The VetsGo program helps Broomfield veterans with medical and dental transportation, from Aurora all the way to Cheyenne, Wyoming. The driver stays throughout the appointment, so the patient knows there will always be someone there to help them and take them home. The Fix-It program allows seniors to request the help of trusted and talented volunteers to complete simple home repairs, safety installations, and other physical tasks.

Centura Avista Adventist Hospital Offers Innovative Robotic Technology for Surgical Patients

Surgery is all about precision, and spine surgery patients at Centura Avista Adventist Hospital can have renewed peace of mind that their procedure is even more precise.

O

ne year ago, Dr. Sharad Rajpal became one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform a new procedure using a special type of integrated robotic technology. The patient, who was 83 years old at the time of surgery, was suffering from severe pain that prevented him from walking. Soon after surgery, the patient was back home recovering with minimal pain. This procedure uses high-speed navigated drills that integrate with interbody tools to perform more accurate and efficient spine surgery. Centura Avista Adventist Hospital was the first hospital in Colorado to host the new procedure, and Dr. Rajpal was one of three surgeons nationwide who became the first to utilize the latest technology platform. “I believe this technology allows surgeons to perform spinal procedures better than we ever have previously by allowing more concise planning and execution in the operating room,” said Dr. Rajpal. “The ability to improve outcomes and safety for our patients is tremendous.” The patient, a retired physicist, had been suffering from severe progressive leg pain and had difficulty walking. Following the procedure, he was recovering comfortably at home after a two-day stay at Centura Avista Adventist Hospital and said his pain is minimal.

This procedure is just one of the innovative ways our incredible caregivers at Avista Adventist are combining world class expertise with compassionate, whole person care.
