BLOCKS. ONE MAIN STREET.

The ride from Halloween through New Year’s Day is like soaring down the biggest hill on the most mammoth roller coaster. It is fast and thrilling and takes your breath away. And it’s over before you know it.
The ride is also full of consumption, little sleep, and steady adrenaline (sometimes stress induced) – all of which can put strain on minds and bodies. And I like cookies. The holiday season is FULL of cookies.
While I exercise regularly, I decided that this year I needed to be a little more proactive than usual about my “holiday health.” My aging body just does not burn those cookie calories like it used to. So I joined the “Holiday Meltdown” at the Paul Derda Recreation Center. Twice a week group fitness from early November through midDecember. I chose the 5:00 a.m. class. Get ‘er done and get on with the day. I got myself up and out the door for the first class and joined a group of active ladies, most more fit than I. They were friendly and welcoming and I kept up. Yay me!
The day of the second class, my alarm went off at 4:30 and the to-do list of my day quickly filled my head. I decided to skip class.
The third day it snowed. It was freezing. I stayed in bed.
Then I received an email from the instructor, Sierra. Where was I? Was everything ok? Darn it. And thank you. Time to reset.
Day four. Back to class. A little challenging to keep up, but I did it. And I drove home with a smile. I encountered my daughter in the kitchen and she asked how it was. Good. I’m glad I went. She laughed and said, those endorphins are actually worth getting out of bed for aren’t they? Yes, they are. And I remembered why I signed up.
What will you do this holiday season to create those good feelings and keep yourself healthy? Mentally, physically, emotionally. Spend a little less, eat a little less, rest a little more, move a little more, share and love a lot more. Each of us has our own recipe and our own mix. Hands in the air or holding on tight.
Whatever your holiday looks like, I wish you a wonderful ride and a beautiful season. And lots of cookies.
Thanks for reading, Tina Eichner,

There are so many podcasts and books talking about how simplicity and minimalism can improve our mental and physical health. And the topic of mental health is everywhere! I like the holistic approach of simplicity, though it’s a big process that can’t be done overnight. It takes shedding parts of your lifestyle including your space and routine to create peace, stability, and natural joy. I will talk much more about this in my January article.
But how do we find freedom from all the “stuff” during the holidays? We have been trained to buy the perfect gift for everyone in our life, as well as create the perfect memorable experience. We focus on the material aspects of the holidays and ignore how we feel, which is usually overwhelmed and dissatisfied. To be honest I can feel a tightness in my shoulders as I write this because it’s hard to not get caught up in all the spending during a time when even groceries are so expensive.
Maybe we try to be more intentional with our gifting this holiday, and much more aware of how we are feeling. Here are a few questions to consider asking yourself before you pull out your credit card.
Who is on your list and why? If you have a large extended family you usually buy for, could you all exchange names and buy just one gift? Maybe you have always bought a gift for a friend but this year it would be fun to try a new hike or a new restaurant together instead. The gift of time and experience is always more memorable than a material item. Gifting food is a beautiful way to show you care (see my holiday treat recipes towards the back of this magazine).
Will this gift be used? When we buy gifts while in a hurry, we purchase things that end up as clutter to others. And simplicity is the theme here. By applying a minimalistic approach means to give fewer, more meaningful gifts or experiences that will last long after the season is over. Consider repurposing something that you no longer have a use for, or make them a photo book of your fun memories over the past year. Even better, schedule a time to volunteer together at the local food bank or homeless shelter!
Are you prioritizing expectations instead of relationships? Don’t stay up all night trying to make that extra batch of cookies when you know deep down your kids will be happy with the eight varieties you already made. They want happy, calm, and rested parents. Not parents who are too busy to spend time with them because they are trying to make everything perfect. Let a lot of your expectations float up the chimney and instead cuddle with your loves and be present with your attention.
Take a step back this holiday and see how you can apply simplicity and minimalism into your routine and traditions. Ask your kids to help brainstorm. I am a big believer in experience over material, and I promise you will appreciate the memories from experience long after the holidays are over. Wishing you a peaceful December and exceptionally low credit card statements. Happy happy holidays!

The year-long rebuild of North Metro Fire Rescue Department’s Station 61 is drawing to a close, and the new facility is already serving Broomfield citizens with additional staff and vehicles as well as enhanced features.
Work began on the project last year, with crews temporarily relocating to other facilities during construction and demolition commencing in November. Just a few weeks ago, the new station began operations, housing five firefighters, Engine 61, Medic 61, and a battalion chief vehicle.
“The newly expanded Station 61 allows us to house a battalion chief dedicated to managing emergency operations in Broomfield and an additional emergency response vehicle,” said David Anderson,
Deputy Chief of Support Services for North Metro Fire. “Adding these emergency resources to the new station fulfills an important strategic goal and promise we made to the citizens of Broomfield to enhance emergency response capabilities as Broomfield continues to grow. We also remain committed to being good environmental stewards and improved energy efficiency within the fire station.”
Station 61 was originally built in 1956 and had undergone multiple remodels over the past 65 years before officials determined it needed to be completely rebuilt in order to meet the community’s
needs for decades to come. The new station more than doubled the size of the existing structure, providing approximately 12,000 square feet of space for living quarters and four bays to house emergency vehicles.
“When we plan for any station remodel or renovation, we look at what new technologies and practices exist to improve efficiency and firefighter safety,” said Anderson. “The new Station 61 incorporates one-level living for better flow and safety, a decontamination room that allows firefighters to remove toxins from incidents prior to entering their living quarters, improved emergency call alerting for firefighters, optimized and energy-efficient lighting, and other enhanced safety features such as diesel exhaust removal in the apparatus bay.”
The new Station 61 was designed by Allred Architects and constructed by Golden Triangle Construction. Anderson said the project did encounter some supply chain issues with materials as well as a generalized labor shortage, both common challenges projects around the world have faced in the wake of the pandemic.
“Our contractor was fantastic and kept things moving nicely, but it wasn’t exactly a smooth process to get to completion – there were a lot of change orders and unforeseen events,” Anderson said.
The department took care to be a good neighbor during the design and construction process. The station was specifically designed to further beautify the neighborhood, including incorporating additional trees alongside Midway Park. The design also included measures to reduce external noise for the surrounding neighborhood.
A few finishing touches and final details remain to be completed, primarily to the exterior, said Anderson.

The name says it all for this one. You will not be able to stop eating it. It’s sweet and salty and takes only 15 minutes to make. My good friend Ceecee made this for her cookie exchange one year so I stuck her name in there to remind me that I owe all of my tastebud pleasure to her.
Ingredients:
• 50 saltine crackers
• 2 sticks salted butter, cubed
• 1 cup soft light brown sugar packed
• 2 cups chocolate chips (my favorite are Ghirardelli milk chocolate)
• ½ to 1 cup mini red and green M&Ms, chopped nuts or sliced almonds if desired. I don’t use any of these, but my kids like it with the M&Ms.
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a large jelly roll pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Spray the liner with non-stick spray and then line the pan with saltine crackers.
2. Place the butter and sugar in a saucepan over low to medium-low heat. Stir until the butter is melted. Once the butter is melted, bring to a boil for 3 minutes stirring constantly.
3. Once it’s nice and bubbly and caramel color, remove pan from the heat and pour evenly over saltine crackers. Spread mixture with a knife. It does not have to be perfect. Move quickly during this process so the toffee does not harden on you.
4. Place pan in the oven and bake for 7-9 minutes. The mixture will spread evenly over the crackers as it bakes.
5. Remove the pan from the oven and cool slightly. Melt the chocolate and then pour over the top with a spatula. Sprinkle with the topping of your choice and freeze for 15 minutes. Once the chocolate has hardened, break the pieces off the foil or parchment and place in a container. Will stay fresh for 1-2 weeks.
I love this Cinnamon Christmas Bread recipe adapted from the Julie Blanner blog. I make this to gift friends and neighbors. They always want the recipe so here it is – let me know what you think! Makes 2 loaves of bread. Buy disposable pans to bake them in, if gifting.
Ingredients:
• 2 cups sugar
• 4 cups flour
• 2 Tbsp. baking powder
• 1 tsp. salt
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup whole milk
• 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
Topping:
• 1 ½ Tbsp. cinnamon
• 2/3 cup sugar
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease two loaf pans
2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl or mixer, beat eggs, milk, and oil.
4. Gradually add dry mixture to wet until moist.
5. Pour mixture an inch below the top of the loaf pan to compensate for the rise.
6. Combine topping, spoon on each loaf and swirl in with a knife, leaving some on top.
7. Bake 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
What makes any community great, among other things, are the people that came before us. Some are long gone, while others are the older adults that are our neighbors.
As the holidays approach, many of those once active and vital seniors are not only grappling with being alone, but may not have the social networks that afford them the opportunity to be recipients of Christmas gifts. For that reason, Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) has created its wildly popular Adopt-A-Senior for Christmas program.
I had the opportunity to discuss that program in depth with SRB’s Executive Director Teryl Fabry.
Why did SRB create its Adopt-A-Senior for Christmas program?
Ms. Fabry: Loneliness and isolation have been a hard topic for our older adults, especially during COVID, which made it much worse. I saw someone place an inquiry on [the website] Nextdoor wanting to give some gifts to seniors for Christmas and wondering if there was anyone who knew a senior in need.
I answered, saying, “Yes.” I explained that lots of seniors in Broomfield would love a gift(s) for Christmas.
That is what started SRB’s annual Adopt-A-Senior for Christmas program. It absolutely blew up! People started contacting me asking how they could purchase a gift for a senior and I thought let’s do this!
So, we put together a flyer, including it with Meals on Wheels deliveries to recipients, and pairing with people in the community who expressed interest in buying older adults holiday gifts.
The first year of SRB’s Adopt-A-Senior for Christmas event was 2020 and we matched 125 seniors to 125 generous community members.
In 2021 (our second year) we matched 140 seniors with community residents in meeting their requests. Of course, this year we would like to meet as many gifting requests as possible.
SRB looks out for its aging adults in the community, such as by funding Broomfield’s Meals on Wheels program. Can you explain the SRB Cares Pick-Me-Up program?
Ms. Fabry: Well, the need is huge year-round. The Adopt-ASenior for Christmas program fueled the year-round program SRB started in partnership with Broomfield’s Senior Services called the SRB Cares Pick-Me-Up program.
Through ‘care calls’ via the city, placed to seniors, SRB attempts to meet needs for older adults year-round, connecting them with community members to get them a requested small gift, while also bringing them joy.
What are the specifics of the upcoming Adopt-A-Senior for Christmas program?
Ms. Fabry: We start in October, putting together all the marketing materials and getting ready to send informational flyers at the beginning of November. These flyers go out to Meals-On-Wheels recipients, and are passed out at local senior living communities.
This year we are partnering with the Broomfield Police Department to reach even more older adults. We are also partnering with The Refuge (therefugeonline.org) to help seniors that are unhoused that may have specific needs. We make announcements at the senior lunches at the Lakeshore Café located in the Broomfield Community Center (280 Spader Way). And other seniors or community members are also encouraged to nominate their friends to receive a gift(s).
We reach out to the community to compile a list of people wanting to give and then start collecting the wish lists that we’ve handed out, and I begin matching people (seniors to gift-givers).
Given privacy concerns, I only disclose the first name of the older adults. I notify the gift-givers, offering them the senior’s gift wish list. This year our gift drop-off event is at the Presbyterian Church (350 Main St., Broomfield). The wrapped gifts will have been labeled with the recipient’s name and the Broomfield Rotary Club helps SRB deliver them to the seniors. This is truly a community effort.

“Broomfield has had unprecedented success in athletics over the last 60-plus years. There is an argument to be made that we are the most successful high school in the state of Colorado,” said Steve Shelton, Broomfield High School’s Athletic Director.
“This community embraces the competitive environment on the fields and in the classroom. There are so many families that are second- and third-generation students here because people choose to come back to this community to raise their children. It is a special place and this is a great way to honor former eagles that represented this community so well while they were here,” he added.
The inaugural class of inductees includes Matthew Martella (Boys Soccer), Stephen Bahl (Boys Basketball), Anna Prins Dehamer (Girls Basketball), Kevin Singleton (Football), Linni Malkin (Softball), John Reyes (Track), Carol Ulrich Dain (Gymnastics), Tyler McBride (Baseball), Veda Magagna (Poms), the 1966-67 Boys Basketball Team, the 2006-2008 Poms Team, the 2007 Girls Basketball Team, Coach Mark Schmidt (Wrestling), Coach Rick Wolfe (Boys Basketball), and Coach Bob Prince (Gymnastics).
To select its inaugural class, the school distributed nomination forms to the community and alumni groups through its website. It included five categories: player, team, coach, administrator, and contributor. The only requirements were that nominees had to be 5 years past graduation and in good standing in their current community. A selection committee helped narrow down the nominees and choose the first class.
“The first class is always special because it is perceived as truly the best athletes to ever walk these halls,” said Shelton. “ If you take sports like basketball and soccer that we have had a ton of success in at the state level and multiple state championships and you have to think about the best soccer player or the best basketball player, it is a difficult conversation to choose one.
The three teams that are going in are the 1967 boys basketball team which is the first-ever state championship team in the community, the back-to-back state champion dance squads which is a great group of girls, and the girls basketball team that started our unbelievable run of state titles in that sport.”
Although fundraising is not the purpose of the Hall of Fame and the ceremony, Shelton said the hope is that making strong connections with BHS’ alumni base will pay off in a variety of ways – from garnering support for bond elections and mill levy votes to supporting the booster club and athletic department when they have needs.
“In general, the lessons kids learn through athletics help to make them successful in life, so any increased access to successful people will benefit us,” he said.
BHS plans to host an event annually with a new class of inductees each year. The first class is larger than future classes are likely to be. Shelton said he expects future classes to include 3-5 athletes, 1-2 coaches and one team.
Tickets to a banquet on December 18 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Chateaux are available to the public on the Booster Club website, https://sites.google.com/view/ broomfieldboosters-sample/hall-of-fame, for $40 and include dinner. A cash bar will be available.
The community also is invited to celebrate the inaugural inductees during the boys basketball game at 6:30 p.m. on December 16 in the Broomfield High School Eagle Gym.
“This community is special in the manner in which it supports our school and our athletic programs,” said Shelton. “The former eagles represent so much about what this community is and how much pride we have in our kids. The opportunity to reconnect with them and hopefully invite them back to our community every year to honor other alumni is something special.”

The holiday season is in full swing, with family celebrations, work parties, and all the season’s greetings! The merriest time of the year is also the busiest time and it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and forget to take care of what is most important … YOU! To help, the emergency department at Avista Adventist Hospital has some suggestions for keeping your holiday season bright.
During the holidays we are excited to break bread with friends and family, sharing hugs, laughter, and on occasion a virus or two. Make sure to get lots of rest inbetween celebrations and don’t feel bad if you have to cancel plans because you’re not feeling 100%. You do not want to be the one that brings a bug to grandma’s house. This time of year also brings our snowy weather and icy sidewalks. Take your time when carrying gifts in so you don’t hit an icy patch and land in the ER with a broken wrist. If you are lucky enough to be hosting this year, make sure the path to your house is well lit, and put salt down on slick walkways.
The top three reasons people visit the ER during the holidays come down to pain. Abdominal pain, back pain, and chest pain. Meal after meal of rich decadent foods that we are not used to eating can cause our stomachs to rebel and our gallbladders to work overtime. Eat and drink thoughtfully and avoid overloading your system. Saving yourself from back pain could be as simple as slowing down and asking for help. With all the rushing around, it’s easy to do too much and a tired back is your clue to slow down to avoid major injury. Know your limits and don’t forget to lift with your knees.
Stomachaches and back pain can put a damper on your holiday spirit, but chest pain is something you should not ignore. Heart attacks are more common during the holidays, and although the American Heart Association can’t say exactly why, they list unhealthy diet changes, alcohol consumption, stress from family interactions and strained financials, along with travel and entertaining stress, as possible factors. Listen to your body and pay attention to the clues it’s giving you. If you are feeling a tightness in your chest, do not wait to see if it goes away, go to the ER in case it turns out to be something serious.
Joyful times can also be stressful, so make sure to take care of yourself. Make plans with priorities in mind, and remember, it’s ok to say no. If all the stress of the holidays or the winter blues hits hard, pull back and take time to remember what the holidays are about and focus on the love the season brings. If you find yourself still needing assistance, come to the ER at Avista, we are here for community support and can help get the resources that are needed.
